I think the theaters in Surigao slowly died with the advent of Betamax, followed VHS and DVD.......there's really no need to watch a movie in the theaters if you can watch one in the comfort of your home..........

I agree. the cinemas before were designed for big audiences so it was not economical to maintain them when only a dozen people will watch. The theater owners were not able to adjust with the times.

amu ba? sir rally, talking about nonoc, my uncle worked before sa nonoc before sjia nagshutdown..he worked hand in hand with fred bayan and barcos..kuman tua na cja sa china..He once brought me there with my cousin..bugnaw karajaw an ambience sa nonc kay baga pa an mga forest areas. I remember the gable church there where we attended a mass once,, the housing na wayay nagpuyo, the tennis court, the sulfur pebbles, the huge pipes and silos,grabe kasayang..

From what I heard, the theaters were facing Borromeo St. between Burgos and Vasquez......until it burned down.....don't know if it was this fire that killed the two daughters ( Rosita and Helen) of the Chinese owner during this fire..........

Nonoc island is now an Special Economic Zone for heavy industries na if im correct tag lobby nan city kuman sa national government na ma transfer ang management ani sa City-LGU. I think sir rally can give frther information on this regard.

I dont know if that was a master plan but yes, the area has already been plotted for different interested parties, depending on their needs. The wharf and airport are existing, just a matter of improving their standards.

Just an update to u guys, PGMA is scheduled to visit Surigao City on Wednesday, April 15 instead of Thursday which was earlier scheduled. Among the higlights of the visit include a two-on-one interview. Issues pertaining to regional concerns are expected to be addressed by the President. Also, the President will inaugurate the newly expanded Surigao Base Port where vessels going to and from San Ricardo, S. Leyte will be docked. This is part of the Strong Nautical Highway (SRNH) of PGMA. It was learned that with this new SRNH route, travel time from Surigao City to San Ricardo, S. Leyte and vice-versa is only 1.5 hrs compared to the previous 3 to 4 hrs Lipata, Surigao - Liloan, S. Leyte route and vice-versa.

The protesters reacted by hurling petrol bombs and driving buses they had commandeered at the lines of troops.
The armed forces chief vowed to restore order using "all possible means".

But weapons would be used only for self-defence and not "excessively", Gen Songkitti Jaggabatara said on national television.

Troops were moving in on Bangkok's Government House, where tens of thousands of red-shirted protesters have based their camp.

Hundreds of soldiers were being brought in on trucks, according to reports.

A three-storey building in the country's education ministry was on fire - hit by several petrol bombs, a security guard told the AFP news agency.
Local residents in some areas of Bangkok were reported to have clashed with the protesters.

Earlier, Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva - whose resignation is the key demand of the protesters - appealed for calm and urged the demonstrators to return home.

He declared a state of emergency on Sunday after the protests forced the cancellation of a major meeting of Asian leaders in the resort city of Pattaya.



Water cannon

Monday's clashes broke out after the military moved in the early hours to clear about 200 protesters at Din Daeng intersection, about 2km (1.2 miles) from government buildings.

There were hours of skirmishes as demonstrators threw petrol bombs and rocks at lines of troops, who were carrying riot shields and automatic weapons, reports the BBC's Alastair Leithead from the scene.

The soldiers did not break their line until a bus, one of several commandeered by the protesters, was set alight.

They then moved in with water cannon to put out the flames, before opening fire with live rounds.

Many soldiers shot above the protesters' heads, but some were clearly firing into the crowd, our correspondent says.

A second round of firing erupted at the nearby Victory Monument landmark after a bus was driven towards the military, before crashing into a motorway barrier.

The prime minister said 70 people had been injured, including 23 soldiers.
Monday is the start of a three-day holiday for the Thai New Year.

One of the protest leaders accused the army of using excessive force against the protesters.

"We will stand firm indefinitely," Jakrapob Penkair told BBC World Service.
Thai Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva appealed for calm in a televised appeal.

"Those who want to help the government restore normality can return home," he said.

"The government has carefully mapped out a plan to implement the law."

The collapse of the Asean summit in Pattaya at the weekend caused huge embarrassment to the prime minister, the BBC's Jonathan Head in Bangkok says.

The protesters are supporters of Thaksin Shinawatra, the former prime minister who was deposed in a coup in 2006 and now lives in self-imposed exile abroad.

He addressed his supporters by telephone on Sunday, calling for a "revolution".

"Now that they have tanks on the streets, it is time for the people to come out in revolution," he said in a message shown on giant screens near the prime minister's office.

"And when it is necessary, I will come back to the country."

Under the state of emergency, gatherings of more than five people can be banned, media reports can be censored and the army can be deployed to help police maintain order.

Last year, the government imposed a state of emergency on several occasions but the army refused to enact the measures.

That crisis eventually led to Mr Abhisit's government taking over from allies of Mr Thaksin.

The problem for Mr Abhisit is that he came to power in December on the back of protests that were just as illegal, our correspondent says.
He may look hypocritical if he only goes after the red-shirted protesters who embarrassed him.

GMA to Inaugurate Infra Projects in Surigao City

Department of Transportation and Communication Undersecretary Thompson Lantion accompanied by high ranking government officials was in Surigao City over the weekend to make an assessment of the completion of some infrastructure projects tentatively scheduled for inauguration on April 16 by no less than President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo.

The Verano Port extension project located at the left wing of the main pier area, with 120 meters long by 24 meters wide, will be the first on the list to be inaugurated by the President. The completion of the extension project provides facilities to accommodate bigger passenger and cargo vessels plying the Manila-Surigao route. Including foreign and inter-island boats scheduled to shipside in Surigao City.

The Philippine Ports Authority implemented the expansion of the Verano Port in Surigao City, because of the flourishing mining industry in the province of Surigao del Norte, to facilitate the ferrying equipment vessels of different mining industry, to provide convenience for unloading operations of the National Food Authority and offer expediency of RORO (roll-on,roll-off) services within the area.

The Verano Port extension project includes the extending of existing wharf, construction of RORO ramp with an estimated cost of more or less 400 million pesos. (mindanao.com)

PUNTA BULUARTE in Barangay San Jose is a historical landmark which was used as observatory point by the Spanish Friars and later by the Japanese during the second World War. A place where Fr. Francisco de Paulas Sanchez, S.J. stayed for more than a month on scientific expedition on April 24, 1887 collecting rare marine fauna. It is a hill overlooking the town and the surrounding waters and islands, which to date is simply marked by maroon castle replica. Complementing the landmark is the brightly colored kiosks along the beach which provide an ideal picnic and resting area. GMA scheduled to launch today Ro-Ro system

Surigao City – President Arroyo is scheduled to launch the cross-country roll-on, roll-off (Ro-Ro) sea transport system here Wednesday.

Fresh from her two-day Middle East job hunting, particularly in Dubai in United Arab Emirates, the Chief Executive is expected to personally lead the inauguration of the multi-million Surigao Port Development Project here.

The President is scheduled to arrive at 10 o’clock in the morning.

She is expected to be accompanied by Press Secretary Cerge Remonde, Public Works and Highways Secretary Hermogenes Ebdane, Jr., Presidential Management Staff Secretary Hermogenes Esperon, Jr., and Region 8 Cabinet Officer for Regional Development (CORD) Gabriel Claudio.

After inauguration, the President will also personally observe the cargo handling operation of the Ro-Ro operation here.

The short program has been prepared by the local ports authority and local government unit officials led by City Mayor Alfonso S. Casurra, Rep. Francisco T. Matugas, Rep. Guillermo Romarate, Jr., Rep. Glenda Ecleo and Gov. Robert Ace Barbers.

She is also expected to announce new developmental projects, in line with her Strong Republic Nautical Highway and Food Production programs.

After the scheduled short program, the President is also scheduled to travel to Benet Port in San Ricardo, Southern Leyte, on board the M/V Ocean King on her maiden voyage.

The President is expected to traverse the Visayas area to look into the other improvements of Ro-Ro facilities and observe its passenger and cargo-handling operations.

The President is also scheduled to inspect the latest improvements of the Ro-Ro sea transport system in the island of Leyte, particularly Southern Leyte, and Tacloban City.

Arroyo to inaugurate nautical highway's eastern seaboard route

MANILA, Philippines - President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo will inaugurate Wednesday the enhanced leg of the oldest roll-on/roll-off (RORO) route of the 919-kilometer land and 137-nautical mile (sea) Strong Republic National Highway (SRNH) Eastern Seaboard trunkline.

A Malacañang statement said President Arroyo would also inaugurate other ports and road components connecting the Strong Republic Nautical Highway (SRNH) Eastern Seaboard line.

The new Eastern Seaboard route starts from Pilar, Sorsogon and runs through Masbate City and Esperanza town in Masbate in Bicol.

It then traverses Naval and Maripipi towns both in Biliran, San Ricardo in Southern Leyte and finally ends in Lipata, Surigao City in Surigao del Norte.

The old route that forms part of the Maharlika Highway, also known as the Pan-Pacific National Highway, was constructed during the time of then President Ferdinand Marcos.

It is the oldest among the Ro-Ro highways that first connected Luzon to the Visayas and Mindanao. It starts from Matnog in Sorsogon and passes through Allen and Dapdap in Northern Samar, Liloan in Leyte and Lipata in Surigao.

The Maharlika Highway link is to be further enhanced with the launch of the new Eastern Nautical Highway as it will further spur trade and commerce between and among the islands not covered by the old Maharlika Highway.

On Wednesday, President Arroyo would board a RORO ferry at the Lipata Port in Surigao City (Surigao del Norte) to San Ricardo, Southern Leyte. The sea trip will take about two hours.

While on board the RORO vessel, the regional two-on-one media interview with Mrs. Arroyo will take place, with the theme "Infrastructure Projects in Full Swing."

Upon arrival at the San Ricardo RORO Port in Barangay Benit, President Arroyo will inaugurate the P420-million San Ricardo Ro-Ro Port Development Project. She will then take the inaugural drive-thru of the port road link from San Ricardo to Liloan.

After that, she and the Ro-Ro caravan will then motor to Tacloban City via the Sogo-Mahaplag-Abuyog Road and will pass by the on-going construction of the P870-million Agas-Agas Viaduct Project in Sogod, Southern Leyte.

Pier 1 of the viaduct or bridge is nearing completion. It is about 70 meters in height with 17 leaps, each leap measuring 4.5 meters high. The second pier of the bridge is 50 percent completed.

The RORO caravan will then proceed to the Leyte Provincial Capitol front road inauguration.

President Arroyo will inaugurate the newly-completed Naval Port Development Project in Biliran Province. The P9.9-million Naval Port Development Project includes a Ro-Ro ramp and a new passenger terminal building.

She will then send off the RORO vessel for the two-hour trip to Masbate. She said the SRNH further enhances public access to various tourism areas throughout the country and offers an alternate and cheaper route for transporting goods from Mindanao to Luzon. - GMANews.TV

Caraga to Open its 1st Drug Rehabilitation and Treatment Center by 2010

Butuan – A 50-bed capacity Drug Rehabilitation and Treatment Center, the first in the region, will be constructed on a 40-hectare lot donated by the Local Government of Surigao City right after a ground breaking ceremony tentatively scheduled next month.
The Office of Special Concerns of the Department of Health already provided the first tranche in the amount of 7.5 million pesos. Once operational, DOH Caraga will manage the facility which will cater not only people from Surigao City, but the whole populace of the region.

Meanwhile, to address drug problem in the region, a 2.5 million Outpatient Treatment and Rehabilitation Clinic in Caraga Regional Hospital was officially opened last month and is now accepting patients for detoxification.

President Gloria Arroyo named herself the country’s drug czar and ordered government agencies to prepare for battle against illegal drugs and announced new marching orders on another front: student drug testing. The President also ordered government agencies concerned to intensify campaign against illegal drugs and to provide rehabilitation and treatment to victims of drug abuse. Caraga is one of the regions in the country with the highest prevalence of drug use.
