filino March 6th, 2008, 09:11 AM re: sa lot ng srbc, if they are laying out na, baka nga something is about to be constructed, latest info ko lang kasi is whether it's SRBC will construct the building and have it leased to metrobank OR metrobank will lease the lot plus will construct their building... d pa kasi na-meet uli ng architects si Mr. Bonpin eh...
re: allied bank, hmm wala akong kakilala sa allied bank surigao eh, but my dad is a manager sa one of the branches of allied bank in cebu, maybe i can relay to him the poor state of allied bank surigao. hehehe.
kung metro bank, sana ang design looks like the original design of SRBC HQ or mas maganda pa doon yung konting my height.

the_islander March 12th, 2008, 06:08 AM shala ang boulevard, may devt authority!
i'm glad there's something like that in Surigao. Great plan for that stretch! I didn't know it's that long at 1.8 km!
fyi, the proposal was pushed by the surigao chamber of commerce and industry (scci), the voice of the business community of surigao, through its president mr johann jake miranda.
sana binili mo nalang ang newspaper @filino at encode mo nalang sana yung article...
wow taas pala yan, almost same ng 2km boulevard ng dipolog.
the TWG of the boulevard devt authority is trying to replicate legaspi city's embarcadero or that of zamboanga and dumaguete.
that will be extended up to lipata hills according to the city mayor that is why ang pacemco port along that area will be relocated to canlanipa to give way for the boulevard expansion.
pacemco board is reconsidering the transfer plan since there was no progress in the philnico reopening. their relocation purpose is to serve the philnico with their limestone needs, but since negotiations halted, they are reconsidering the plan.
that's according to a reliable source. hehe.
expansion of surigao luneta arcade building II along borromeo st

is it luneta arcade II or new city commercial building? just askin, for enlightenment.

im not sure but i hope somebody here could clarify on that. anyway, i passed by the city airport this morning and to my surprised there were 4 or 5 small airplanes landed on the airport. based on what i have read from the other furom, i supposed those were the staff of airphilippines and ATO Manila cheking our runway for possible Boeing 737 to land here. according to that furom, the length of our city airport runway is enough for 737 thus, they are checking either it has enough capacity like the thickness of the runway or the general condition of the runway. islaner any idea on this?

unfortunately, got no update regarding that. what i'm sure is they are looking for possibilities of serving the surigao route in lieu of the asian spirit. in fact, a delegation from airphils pay a visit to mayor last february 8.

yeah i knew it, but they will be using a q400 model aircraft that only accomodates 60 plus passengers. unfortunately this is not a jet type of plane, but that visit gives them the opportunity to upgrade the type of aircraft they will be using by May 1 if im not mistaken, upon knowing that our airport can possibly accomodate a 737.

filino March 12th, 2008, 08:02 AM Floods submerge parts of Surigao City By ABS-CBN News Interactive

March 8, 2008
One full day of continuous rain have flooded parts of Surigao City, ABS-CBN Regional Network Group reported Thursday. The flooding came as a result of the Kinabutan River overflowing due to the heavy rains.
Residents in affected areas had to be rescued by the Quick Action Response Team (QART), Surigao City's local rescue team, from their homes. "Lumikas na kami... kasi sinabi na tataas pa ang tubig, kaya sumama na kami sa kanila," evacuee Marita Cabaya said in an interview.
"Doon hindi madali ang paglikas namin dahil tumaas na ang tubig hindi na makaya ng aming bangka, kaya nagpapasalamat kami na dumating na ang rescue [team]," said Janeth Cabaya, another evacuee.
According to the rescue team, the flooding is the worst the city has seen so far in years. "Patuloy ang aming rescue operation hangga't hindi titigil ang ulan," said QART head Isidro Elumba.
The city's medical team also said they are ready to respond in case evacuees become sick of colds and cough.
"We are preparing for anybody who come here and complain [of]... cough and cold," said city medical officer Dr. Lina Dumalig.
Surigao City Mayor Alfonso Casurra immediately raised an alarm to warn other residents in affected areas.
"Pinatunog namin ang siren indicating na kailangan nang lumikas ang mga naninirahan sa mga low-lying areas," Casurra told ABS-CBN Surigao correspondent May Diez.
Casurra also said that the flood damages amount to an estimated P10 million. Radio reports had it that the City Government is studying the need to declare the "state of calamity" in the city.

ang mga waves na iyan are for prof surfers. even in international surfing months, you can still enjoy surfing when you're a pro on some other sites na smaller waves lang. the picture above are the waves at cloud 9 the famous surf destination in siargao and yes, during summer hindi ganyan kalaki ang waves diyan.

By Ben on Mar 5, 2008 in Feature, News
Projects expected to spur economic dev’t in the island as well making it Tourism Center of Caraga
by Ben Serrano - March 4, 2008
BUTUAN CITY- “No other President has given so much attention for the development of Siargao Island like what President Arroyo did and all of these are to spur economic growth while making the island, the tourism center in Caraga Region if not in Mindanao”, chorused Siargao Mayors and Siargao Island Rep. Francisco Tinio Matugas during two-day Siargao Island Project Prioritization Workshop held at a local convention center here March 4-5, 2008.
The workshop was attended by some regional directors of regional offices based here in Butuan City while others by their representatives of different national government agencies, municipal development and planning officers, Municipal Mayors and staff of the Constituency Office of Congressman Matugas.
Matugas who is former three-termer Provincial Governor of Surigao del Norte said that the purpose of the gathering is to prioritize locally and nationally initiated programs particularly the pro-poor projects to maximize limited resources while getting maximum results, cost-effective and relevant to the needs and demands of times.
“ I am consensus builder, I want government projects be implemented according to the needs of the people and this is the reason why I called up all government agencies to come and seat down and discuss together on what direction we all wanted to go”, Matugas told newsmen in an interview.
Matugas enumerated national government initiated projects that will start this year with some already on-going and these are; P100-M Expansion of Sayac International Airport runway in Del Carmen town to cater bigger aircrafts for local and foreign tourists who trooped and visit the island by the thousands yearly, P80-M Circumferential Road that will connect all nine towns of the island, P2-M Siargao Watershed Project, P3.5-M Barangay Wharfs Development, P10-M Siargao Manpower Training Center, P20-M Barangay Road Rehab and Improvement Project and P20-M for the Construction of new Siargao Schools Division Office Building.
Other projects were P5-M BFAR-initiated establishment for the first-ever 500-hectares Siargao Mariculture Park that will develop artificial refs, culture of different marine life and fish-species and Construction of Ice Plant and Cold Storage that will help local fishermen storing their catch and the P22-M Siargao Irrigation Project.
Matugas who almost shed tears in recalling hardships he undergo while getting support from national government to help spur economic development in the Siargao whom he claimed “very difficult and tedious process” thanked President Arroyo as he agree with Siargao Municipal Mayors present that no other President has shown so much concern for Siargao Island.
“Without full support of President Arroyo, these projects that will surely generate employment and eventually helped the poor could not have been materialized”, Matugas admits.
Aside from its rich marine resources and its being the surfing capital of the country, Siargao Island is the home of best beach resorts whose crystal clear sands, sky blue seawaters can equal if not surpassed Boracay Island and other fine beach resorts in the country.
Siargao officials in unison admitted that what is lacking are intensified promotions of the beautiful island to entice more local and foreign tourists.
Matugas said that with the completion of expansion project of the runway of Sayac International Airport located in Del Carmen saying “we expect arrival of more local and foreign tourists as more airlines will now open more trips to Siargao from key cities like Manila , Cebu and even international flights”.
Siargao Island which is part of Surigao del Norte province is the most visited island of the province if not in the whole of Caraga Region after it has become a major tourist destination which has a total of nine municipalities, namely, Dapa, Del Carmen, Pilar, General Luna, Burgos, Sta. Monica, Socorro, San Benito and San Isidro.

Surigao City Mayor Alfonso S. Casurra will reveal the accomplishments, thrusts and directions of the local government on his 2008 State of the City Address on April 3 at the City Auditorium. He will report to the Surigaonons his achievements for the year 2007 and the plans that he intends to continue for the next couple of years. His address focuses on the increase of locally generated income, socio-economic development projects and the customer-friendly services of the city.
For the rest of his third and final term as city mayor of Surigao, he will complete the Surigao City Culture and Arts Center, the first phase of the Surigao City Solid Waste Management System and Sanitary Landfill, the third floor of the City Commercial Building and the ground floor of the City PNP Building.
Mayor Casurra will exert efforts to re-file House Bill 4320 in the House of Representatives. The bill, filed by then-Rep. Robert Ace S. Barbers of the 2nd District of Surigao del Norte on May 12, 2005 in the 13th Congress, seeks to convert 243.7 hectares of timberlands in the urban areas of the city to alienable and disposable lands.
Mayor Casurra will work for the accreditation of Hikdop Island Home and Lying-in Clinic with the Philippine Health Insurance Corp. and the Department of Health; formulate sustainable programs for mental health and establish a psychiatric facility; complete the Sitio Brazil farm-to-market road in Mat-i; and establish a land information desk under the Surigao Land Administration Management Project.
Achieving these projects despite all the odds and challenges will push through as long as all Surigaonons remain united and committed............

filino March 31st, 2008, 03:14 AM Lake Mainit, the fourth largest lake in the Philippines, is geographically located between the Provinces of Surigao del Norte and Agusan del Norte, in the Island of Mindanao (9020.32”-9031.98” N Latitude and 125028.50” E Longitude). It is also the deepest with a maximum depth of about 223 m and a mean depth of about 128 m. It is one of the most productive lakes in the country ranking only third to Laguna de Bay (Balayut, 1983).
The lake is the haven of several commercial species of fish that are a source of livelihood of fishermen around the lakeshore. There are about 12 species of fish identified in the lake (Lewis, 1973), seven of which are commercially exploited by fishermen (Gracia, 1981). Some of them are either migratory or were introduced by the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) or by some private individuals to augment the fish stocks in the lake. The most dominant fish in the lake in terms of fish catch are the gobies (pidianga) which constitute about 63.3% of the total daily catch (Gracia, 1981). The rest of the catches are distributed among the other groups such as tilapia, mudfish, catfish, common carp, eel and some miscellaneous species. The most dominant species of phytoplankton are the blue green and green algae and some diatoms. The zooplankton species are dominated bycopepods and rotifers.

filino April 1st, 2008, 08:17 AM Help in Surigao rehab, local execs, solons asked
Mrs. Arroyo orders DPWH to speed up repairs of roads, bridges
Mike U. Crismundo
MALIMONO, Surigao del Norte — President Arroyo has called on local executives and legislators to help in the rehabilitation of bridges and roads damaged by rains in this farthest mountain seaside town of the province.
At the same time, the Chief Executive, who visited this town last weekend, has also ordered the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) through Presidential Management Staff (PMS) Secretary Cerge Remonde to assist in fast-tracking the repair of those identified damaged bridges and roads.
She said the counterpart of the national government for the rehabilitation of the projects will be drawn from the calamity fund.
According to the President, the need to repair the two bridges is a priority concern so that the transport of food and other products to and from the municipality will be made easier and faster.
She said the rain-damaged sections of Surigao province must be given priority, as well as in Claver, Surigao del Norte to Carrascal, Surigao del Sur so that rice can get out from the granaries and immediately brought from Cantilan and Madrid to Tago, all in Surigao del Sur.
To avoid a rice shortage in the country, Mrs. Arroyo said all infrastructure projects must be given attention especially roads so that supply of rice will immediately be delivered to its destination.
The President said that in Manila, there are ships carrying rice that cannot dock due to congestion. Because of this, she said that she has also instructed Agriculture Secretary Arthur Yap to meet with Transportation and Communications Secretary Leandro Mendoza to iron out bottlenecks.
As to the delay in the delivery of rice by land, President Arroyo already instructed Remonde to relay the instruction to Philippine National Police (PNP) chief Director General Avelino Razon to ensure that rice crops and other food convoys be secured against harm.
She also added that "kotong" cops must be "quashed like rats" so that this will not be a reason for eliminating police checkpoints because this can help the motoring public in deterring crime. "Checkpoints are meant to deter criminals and not to detain food," the President said.
The President said that it has been a long time since her scheduled visit to the municipality was cancelled and since then, she has longed to fulfill a promise to the people of Malimono to facilitate the more efficient delivery of social services.
Mrs. Arroyo instructed Northeastern Mindanao DPWH Regional Director Engr. Romeo S. Momo to come up with a budget estimate needed for the rehabilitation of the two bridges.
She asked Surigao del Norte 2nd District Rep. Guillermo Romarate, local government executives of Surigao del Norte under Gov. Robert Ace Barbers, and the municipality of Malimono for their counterparts in realizing the project.
"Since the two bridges that needs to be repaired are not located within the restriction of the national road, I am asking Cong. Guillermo Romarate and the local government units of Surigao del Norte and the municipality of Malimono to give their counterpart so that the rehabilitation will be made soon," she added.
The President said good road conditions of roads and bridges are vital components for progress and development.
Also present during the visit of the President here were members of the Cabinet, Surigao del Norte solon Rep. Francisco T. Matugas, 402nd Infantry (Stingers) Brigade commander Brig. Gen. Dante Fernandez and other regional, provincial, municipal officials.

The City Government’s “accomplishments would not have been made possible without the strong support, cooperation and convergence of practically all sectors of our community,” Surigao City Mayor Alfonso S. Casurra said Wednesday in his 2008 State of the City Address held at the City Auditorium, where Surigaonons from different social classes convened in the full-packed auditorium to listen to the mayor as he reported the various achievements attained by the city in 2007.
Mayor Casurra highlighted the increase in the locally generated income where the city earned an 11.66-percent increase per year since 2004, which roughly translated to an income of P439 million last year compared to P285 million earned in 2004. This was mainly due to the sound fiscal management that the City Government has institutionalized during the start of his administration, according to Mayor Cassura.
His administration’s thrust toward transparent and accountable governance has continuously yielded positive results as reported by a Social Weather Station trust survey conducted in December 2007 where he gained the highest trust rating of +82, followed by Sangguniang Panlungsod at +61, the city police at +46, the non-government organizations at +13 and the business sector at +8.
The city was also a recipient of the TAGataguyod Award for best performing city coalition for transparent accountable governance given by the Mindanao Business Council, the Asia Foundation and the United States Agency for International Development.

The mayor also made into spotlight the city strategic planning and development projects implemented and set forth for the city. The small grant of the Surigao Land Administration and Management Project (SLAM), a grant under the Innovation Support Fund of the Australian Agency for International Development, was completed in 2007 and the P7-million programmatic phase will begin this year. Utilizing information and communications technology, SLAM would facilitate inter-agency land management coordination and convergence of information which fundamentally improve agency planning, management and service delivery within the city and, eventually, to the entire region.
The three project components of the Philippines-Japan Grant for Underprivileged Farmers, also known as NEDA KR2 program, were 80 percent complete, said Mayor Casurra, while the solar power installations in select remote barangays under the Solar Power Technology Support 2 program of the Department of Agrarian Reform has been completed and are currently enjoyed by the residents of the select barangays.
Mayor Casurra also reported the achievements of the city in the education sector, in which Surigaonon students continue to excel not only in the country but also in other countries. He also recognized the city scholars under the City Scholarship Program who have successfully graduated from their chosen degrees.
The year 2007 saw various endowments granted by international non-government organizations, medical missions and religious groups who have donated medical equipment and health facilities. Mayor Casurra recognized the city’s partner organizations like the Fruitful Harvest Ministry, the Philippine Inland/Island Mission Ministry of Australia, the Fundación Anesvad Cooperación Española and the Culion Foundation of Spain, and Youth in Action of Turning Point Church of the U.S. who donated hospital beds and medical supplies which were aptly distributed to hospitals and clinics around the city.

“It is a great honor [that he] mentioned our group. It is our second year that we’ve done it and we are planning to continue [doing] it, ” Jamie Williams, team leader of Youth in Action and who was in the city to witness the mayor’s address, said in an interview.
Mayor Casurra reported his plan to exert efforts so that House Bill 4320 can be re-filed in Congress. The bill, filed by then-Rep. Robert Ace S. Barbers of the 2nd District of Surigao del Norte (now governor of Surigao del Norte) on May 12, 2005 in the 13th Congress, seeks to convert 243.7 hectares of timberlands in the urban areas of the city to alienable and disposable lands.
When asked for comments, Gov. Barbers said, “Maayo na. Mas magana gani na maaprubahan before 2010 because during my time as a member of Congress, napasa nako na sa Lower House unya didto lang nabinbin sa Senate, pero nakapasa na jaon sa committee level. Didto lamang jaon naipit sa plenary discussion. (That’s good. It would be better if [the bill] gets approved before 2010 because during my time as a member of Congress, I had successfully passed that in the Lower House but it was deferred in the Senate although the bill already passed in the committee level. It was only held up during plenary discussion.)”
Mayor Casurra concluded his reports with a list of plans his administration had set forth for the city in the coming years. “What we have line up may be a tall order but we have known in the past years that as long as we remain united and committed to our ideals, we will overcome the odds and challenges,” he said. filino April 17th, 2008, 04:31 AM http://i274.photobucket.com/albums/jj246/lagat_bucket/bonok.jpg
HISTORY OF BONOK-BONOK
One of the oldest and still existing tribes in the Philippines are the Mamanwas, who are quite similar to the Negritoes in physical profile. Although forced to settle in the hinterislands because of the advent of development, they still practiced, however, their customs and traditions. Among these is the belief about “KAHIMUNAN”, a tribal festivity, where music and graceful dancing are distinctive features. They chant and play accompanied with their instruments, such as: the gimbar (drum), the gong and the bamboo called the “kalatong” and “katik”. A “baylan” or priest officiates the celebration as a tribute to their God, “MAGBABAYA” and ancestors for good health and bountiful harvest intercessions.
During the “kahimunan” or tribal festivity, wild pigs, chicken and different fruits are offered to the ancestors. A thanksgiving dance called “BONOK-BONOK” is performed by the different village chieftains and babaeyons. Happiness and friendship are expressed through dancing, shouting and singing. They wave scarves of “BANAY” as signs of good will, prosperity and blessings for the entire tribal village.
http://i274.photobucket.com/albums/jj246/lagat_bucket/unity_bonok2.jpg
Thus, Bonok-Bonok is a ritual dance which originated from these early settlers. The rhythm usually starts with a slow beat and gradually gets faster, causing the dancers to work at pace with the music. Adding to the attraction of the dance, is the colorful raiment, which includes beaded headdresses or tubaw, bracelets and anklets of the women. The ceremonial dress of the men and women are likewise ornate in design, and of various colors.
The dance ritual has been brought down through the generations and still being practiced today. In reverence to the Patron Saint San Nicolas de Tolentino, the people have already adopted the “Bonok – bonok Maradjaw Karadjaw” Festival which is a reflection of Surigao’s rich cultural heritage.

http://i274.photobucket.com/albums/jj246/lagat_bucket/pasayan_feastival.jpg
The first “pasayan” Festival was successfully launched during the city fiesta where an impressive 500 kilograms of shrimps were cooked to hopefully make it in the Guiness World Book of Records as envisioned by the Chairman of the Bonok-Bonok Foundation, Gov. Robert Lyndon Barbers.
The governor also took the chance of promoting the bountiful harvest of shrimps from the fishermen of the Municipality of Gigaquit and its nutritional value, and he demonstrated it together with Madame Tricia Barbers, by feeding the orphans of Surigao City from Tugbongon with the deliciously cooked shrimps.
A throng of excited Surigaonons were eagerly waiting for their turn to buy the cooked shrimps, as it was sold in a very affordable price of P100.00 to which the proceeds will go to the funds of the Bonok-Bonok Foundation.
Gov. Barbers who financially financed the said festival was very thankful to all the Surigaonons for showing their support and to Knorr Sinigang Mix being one of the major sponsors. (with some info. From Rebecca Bagnol, Supervising Agriculturist-PAO)

Farirah April 17th, 2008, 06:37 AM GMA wants more flights to ‘surfing capital’
PRESIDENT Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo yesterday ordered the Tourism and Trade and Industry departments to invite Philippine Airlines (PAL) and Cebu Pacific to fly to Siargao Island in Surigao del Norte from Manila to make the island more accessible to tourists.
’’We should invite them... We should push them [to fly to Siargao],’’ the President said in a late-breaking statement. Siargao is the country’s unofficial surfing capital.
Mrs. Arroyo issued the instructions upon her arrival at the Sayak Airport in Surigao del Norte after she was told that the widening works on the airport were almost completed and by then could accommodate more airplanes.
The statement quoted Trade Secretary Peter B. Favila as saying that PAL and Cebu Pacific would be flying the so-called missionary routes now that they have acquired smaller planes. Tourism Secretary Joseph Durano, however, was quoted as saying that Siargao Island is one of the few priority destinations of the missionary routes.
Presently, only domestic carrier South East Airlines (SEAIR) flies directly to Siargao Island from the Cebu International Airport.
To get to Siargao from Manila, one has to fly to Butuan City or Cagayan de Oro City and travel by land for about three to four hours to get to Surigao City. From the Surigao City port, one has to take a boat trip that takes four hours.
In a phone interview, PAL President Jaime J. Bautista said the company would look into the President’s invitation. "We will consider that. We want to fly to as many destinations as we can," he said. Mr. Bautista, however, noted that the runway in Surigao del Norte is too short. "We will first look at the runway."

lightsaber46 April 21st, 2008, 07:58 AM Surigao del Sur to get bulk of 2008 infrastructure fund
P2 billion programmed for Surigao-Davao road project
Mike U. Crismundo
BUTUAN CITY -- President Arroyo pledged her commitment to help boost development in Surigao del Sur as she announced that the province will get "a bulk" of the 2008 infrastructure allocation.
She also ordered the release of R10 million for the water system in Siargao Island, Surigao del Norte to boost its tourism activities.
Surigao del Norte solon Rep. Francisco T. Matugas said the President is banking on the full development of the tourism assets of Siargao Island to achieve economic progress.
In her visit last week in Surigao provinces, the President announced that Surigao would receive a bulk budget for infrastructures from the 2008 allocation amounting to R2 billion for the construction of the Surigao-Davao Coastal Road in order to complement the R200-million Carrascal-Claver road project which is expected to allow tourists coming from the regions and nearby areas to reach the province once it is completed.
Northeastern Mindanao Public Works and Highways Regional Director Romeo S. Momo said these flagship multi-billion projects of Arroyo are now in place while others are already "moving."
President Arroyo said the development of the tourism assets of Surigao del Norte and Surigao del Sur is the key factor to the economic progress in the two provinces.
The Arroyo administration’s Medium Term Philippine Development Plan (2004-2010) stated that the tourism sector’s "primary importance in poverty alleviation lies in its potential to generate millions of jobs for various groups of people."
"Tourism is the best source of employment and from the most skilled to the least skilled, there is an employment opportunity," the President said when she was in Siargao Island last week.
Thus, the President pledged to help rural areas in Northeastern Mindanao, particularly in tourism areas to develop their natural resource endowments through support infrastructure, such as airports and roads to make the tourist destinations more accessible.
Aside from helping the tourism industry, this will also create human-resource-intensive jobs, foreign exchange earnings, livelihood, investment, and revenues, both local and national, said Rep. Matugas.
He said for the past several years, tourism industry has been playing a key role in promoting mutual understanding among nations, and as an instrument of national and economic development through poverty alleviation and conservation of fragile natural and cultural resources.
He said Tourism Secretary Joseph Ace Durano and the Regional Development Council are closely coordinating with him in promoting tourism investments in Siargao Island and other neighboring areas.
The Arroyo administration projected to reach one million in net additional employment from the tourism sector.
The President is banking on the full development of the tourism assets of Surigao del Norte for the province to finally achieve economic progress, stressed Rep. Matugas, a close ally of Arroyo.
The Chief Executive last week invited Philippine Airlines and Cebu Pacific to fly directly from Manila to Siargao, the provinces tropical paradise endowed with white powdery sand, underground caves, game fishing spots and surfing havens.

This increased the air passenger traffic of Bancasi Airport. Right now CEB has 14 flights a week between Manila & Butuan while PAL has 11 flights a week. CEB has 3 flights a week between Cebu & Butuan. Come May 19, PALExpress will have a daily flight between Cebu & Butuan.

wala na airline nagserve sa Surigao City and Tandag City as of the moment. Siargao still has flights to Cebu via SoutEastAsian Airlines 2x a week using a 19 seater plane.
The following are just my own analysis and do correct me if i am wrong:
Most Siargao bound tourists still prefer to travel via Butuan due to a)bigger planes(some of these tourists bring with them surfboards which may not fit in small planes). b)night entertainment and shopping and c)heritage tours
Even when Asian Spirit was still serving Surigao City, most surigaonons still prefer to travel on air via Butuan due to a)bigger planes(Filipinos feel safer if they travel on big planes/boats) b)it was cheaper to take CEB or PAL via Butuan than taking Asian Spirit direct to Surigao.
It is more comfortable to travel to Butuan & Davao than to Surigao City when you are from Tandag and Bislig. Hence passengers from these places seldom take the plane from Surigao City.
Surigao City is such a lovely place and am hoping PALExpress will serve this city in the near future. Initially PALExpress will fly from Cebu to Butuan and GenSan starting May 19. Davao starting May 26 and Maybe Surigao before the year ends.
By the way, as an added info, the PALExpress plane that will serve Cebu-Butuan-Cebu flies from Boracay(Caticlan) to Cebu, then flies back to Boracay after it comes back from Butuan. This means from Butuan you will be in Boracay in 1 hour and 30 minutes. 1 hour travel time plus 30 minutes stopover at Cebu!

correct. even me i prefer going to manila via butuan kay gawas sa dako ang planes cheaper pa ang fare, imagine 50% plus imo ma save. surigao to manila is more than 4,000.00.

the first time nag served ang asian spirit sa surigao pariho ra ug fare sa butuan, one time gani nakasakay ko 1,800.00 plus lang but later ni mahal na mao daghan mi dagan sa butuan. during ana nga time mi increase ug 400% ang arrival sa city, correct me if im wrong pero murag something like that. asian spirit is using a jet type of aircraft that accomodates 120 plus passengers (nalimot nako basta 100 plus to)

Surigao City has a Beatiful City airport and just 10 minutes ride away from the heart of the city. the only reason why PAL, Cebu Pac and Airphil wala mo serve dati kay mubo daw ang runway. ang mistake sa ATO the extension of the runway was not properly documented and reported to the central office. today, it was confirmed that the city airport can now accomodate bigger planes.

Air Philippines operates using Boeing 737-200 that can carry 118 passengers and Bombardier Q300 that can carry 50 passengers. I do hope B737-200 planes can safely land at Surigao City. Just some caution, AirPhils B737-200 fleet are second hand planes. The same model like the one that crashed at Samal Island several years back. Their Bombardier Q300 is brand new.
I believe the length of the runway of Surigao City Airport is still not ideal for Cebu Pacific's Airbus 319. But Cebu Pacific now has an ATR72-500 turboprop plane which can carry 50 to 68 passengers.
LGU Surigao City should work out for the extension of the runway for it to safely accommodate Boeings and airbuses.

BXU-GCP May 2nd, 2008, 11:26 AM sorry but ano ba ang required length ng runway for cebu pac aircrafts?
:ohno:
Cebu Pacific has a fleet comprising Airbus319, Airbus320 ug ATR72-500.
Butuan airport is just good enough to accommodate Airbus319/320 pero naovershoot pa rin ang isang Airbus plane ng PAL last year. You may have noticed grabe jud ang break sa plane inig land sa Bancasi Airport. Because of this, expansion of the Butuan Airport that will amount to around P1.5B, is on the way. By then dili na siguro kinahanglan mobreak ug apil ang tiil sa passengers(he he he) kay taas na ang runway.
Since Surigao Airport runway is shorter than the present runway of butuan, then we can say it still need some expansion to accommodate Airbuses. Of course Cebu Pacific can serve your beautiful city with it ATR72-500 which are similar to Bombardier Q400 which will be used by PALExpress for your city.
regjeex May 3rd, 2008, 03:08 PM Yeah I've experienced that too... pugong apil ang tiil nako pag land sa Bancasi. And the Surigao will provide that soon.

filino May 8th, 2008, 05:36 AM PAL Express to fly 22 routes initially
CATICLAN, Malay, Aklan – PAL Express, the new, low-fares brand of Philippine Airlines, will serve 22 inter-island routes at the outset, including some provincial points currently without air service or underserved by other players, PAL president Jaime J. Bautista announced today.
“With PAL Express, Philippine Airlines is reassuming its traditional mandate of providing quality, affordable air service to outlying communities. Such air link has historically acted as a spur for the development of these areas.” said Bautista.
“PAL Express also allows PAL to offer a low-fare yet high-value alternative in many trunkline and tourist routes such as here in Caticlan,” he added during arrival ceremonies of the inaugural PAL Express flight from Manila.
Other PAL executives onboard the maiden flight were deputy chief executive officer Henry So Uy and assistant vice president for sales Antonio Herrera.
On hand to welcome the PAL delegation were Aklan vice-governor Gabrielle Calizo; members of the travel trade; and representatives from the media.
Caticlan, gateway to the resort island of Boracay, is the first destination of PAL Express, which will operate 12 flights daily from Manila starting today. Brand-new, 50-seater Bombardier Q300 turbo-propeller aircraft are deployed on the high-traffic route.
PAL Express will dramatically expand its network over the next two months, with service scheduled to be launched on 22 routes.
Thirteen of those new routes emanate from PAL Express’ main hub of Cebu, where operations start May 19 with services to five points – Caticlan, Bacolod, Tacloban, Butuan and General Santos.
On the same day, a daily flight between Manila and Busuanga in northern Palawan will also commence.
On May 26, three more services will operate out of Cebu: Davao, with thrice-daily flights; Iloilo, twice daily; and Puerto Princesa, a single flight everyday.
On June 23, four new destinations will be served from Cebu – Dipolog, Ozamiz, Cagayan de Oro and Zamboanga, with the last service proceeding onward to Davao and back – rounding out the Cebu hub network for now.
On the other hand, PAL Express’ other hub in Manila will add several new routes in July: Surigao, Legazpi, Virac and Cauayan (Isabela) on July 21, and San Jose (Occidental Mindoro), Calbayog and San Fernando (La Union) on July 26.
With PAL Express’ entry, Surigao, Cauayan and San Fernando, which have gone without air service for many years now, will once more enjoy a regular air link to Manila – a service PAL first provided these small cities in the 1980s.
Likewise, travelers to Virac, San Jose, Ozamiz and Calbayog will benefit from PAL Express’

Mismong si Governor Robert Ace S. Barbers, maoy nag-una sa pagpaningkamot karon aron panalipdan ang palibot pinaagi sa Advocacy for a Clean Environment and its Sustainability (ACES) Program.
“This has got to stop, and we need your cooperation,” patin-aw sa gobernador.

“We will work out on putting up check points in all exit points in the province, including our ports so that the illegal transport of our forest products and mineral ores will be curtailed. I would like to give a warning to all operators and financers of illegal activities in the province causing damage to our natural resources to halt their operations because this time we are taking aggressive steps to enforce the law”. Sulti ni Gob. Barbers.

filino May 21st, 2008, 02:40 AM Surigao City lone NE Mindanao contender for Gawad Kalasag
This nickel city of Northeastern Mindanao in the Caraga region is this year’s lone contender for the "Gawad Kalasag" awards, it was learned today.
The award is given to heroes in disaster response, governed by the Department of Interior and Local Government.
Surigao City was a nominee in 2007 but failed to get it.
City Mayor Alfonso S. Casurra is optimistic that this time, his city will capture it.
The Department of the Interior and Local Government said the contestants will be evaluated on how they fare based on four areas of disaster management.
The search is open to all city, provincial, municipal and barangay disaster coordinating councils and non-government organizations.
Surigao City's entry is for best in "city disaster coordinating council."
The Regional Selection Committee endorse nominations to the national level on May 6.

filino May 26th, 2008, 05:23 AM Sa Siargao: P2-M Patrol Boat Ihatag Sa Dapa

I hope this will really push thru. Until now nothing is mentioned in the official website of asian spirit (http://www.asianspirit.com). June 9 is barely two weeks away and no official announcement yet from the airline. What is definite is PALExpress will serve Surigao soon. The company already advertised in leading newspapers and mentioned in press releases the comeback of PAL in the beautiful city of Surigao.

PLDT launches $ 550-M northern fiber optic gateway By EMMIE V. ABADILLA
The Philippine Long Distance Telephone Co. (PLDT) yesterday launched the 0 million Asia-America Gateway (AAG) landing in Bgy. Baccuit, Bauang, La Union.
President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo inaugurated this Northern gateway consisting of a 20,000-kilometer long fiber optic cable project that links Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, Brunei Darussalam, Vietnam, Hong Kong, the Philippines, Guam, Hawaii and the US West Coast. PLDT contributed $ 50 million to the initiative.
Furthermore, PLDT intends to start its third gateway facility in the Southern part of the Philippines also worth around $ 500 million within the year, according to PLDT Chairman Manuel V. Pangilinan.
"We are tentatively looking at Cebu, Leyte, Cagayan de Oro and Surigao as probable choices for the Southern Gateway in Visayas and Northern Mindanao," he added.
In the meantime, the telco will start operating the AAG by early 2009, enabling the country to become a hub for regional as well as trans-Pacific connectivity. In the future, it will provide connectivity to Australia, India, Africa and Europe as well.
The first gateway facility, located in Batangas, passes through Japan and Taiwan. Significantly, AAG, the second gateway in the North, is the first to bypass earthquake prone areas.
Hence, it will provide added protection from disasters such as the 7.1 magnitude earthquake two years ago that disrupted telecommunications services to corporate and retail customers across the region.
"It’s less prone to risk," stressed PLDT Senior Vice President and Head of Customer Sales and Marketing Group Eric Alberto.
On top of these, the 2 terabit-capacity AAG is expected to meet the growth in international bandwidth demand for Internet Protocol or IP-based data, video and other multimedia services in the next half decade.
Until 2010, the country’s Business Process Outsourcing (BPO) sector alone is projected to triple its growth to be a $ 10 Billion industry. AAG will likewise boost Business Process Outsourcing (BPOs), call centers and other growth industries that depend on advanced telecommunications services and thus further propel the country’s economic development.
The enhanced international connectivity likewise supports the growth of broadband Internet services such as PLDT MyDSL and Smart Bro Prepaid. (EVA)
