Homes on Siargao Island opened to tourists

Pilar, Siargao Island – The lack of such basic tourism facilities like pension houses and small hotels hinder the tourism development of remote communities, but people in the quiet town of Pilar in Siargao Island, Surigao del Norte have solved this problem by accepting tourists through the home-stay program of the Department of Tourism (DoT).

When Pilar, which faces the Pacific Ocean and is famous for huge barracudas and schools of tuna in its waters hosted the first-ever International Game Fishing Tournament in 2008, the main problem of organizers was accommodations as there was none where tourists from overseas could stay in.

Made aware of the problem, Tourism Secretary Ace Durano immediately asked Pilar residents to participate in the DoT’s home-stay program, which allows homeowners to offer vacant rooms in their houses to tourists during festivals and other such events.

“I wish other local government units around the country will follow the home-stay program adopted by Pilar,” Durano told reporters.

OFWs in Afghanistan crash defied ban - OWWA

MANILA, Philippines - The 10 overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) killed in a helicopter crash in Afghanistan had defied the government ban on deployment to war-torn countries, the Overseas Workers’ Welfare Administration (OWWA) said yesterday.
OWWA chief Carmelita Dimzon said the 10 OFWs were deployed to work in the Middle East in 2004 but apparently slipped into Afghanistan as illegal workers.
“Based on our records, they had already returned (to the Philippines) after working in Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates and Iraq, but left again as tourists first week of July,” Dimzon said.
The 10 workers had entered Dubai as tourists, she added.
Dimzon said the OWWA is still trying to determine how the workers ended up in Afghanistan from Dubai.
The Philippines has banned its workers from Afghanistan, but many still find employment at military bases there.
In March, a Filipino carpenter at Kandahar Air Base was reportedly killed in a rocket attack.
The 10 Filipinos killed Sunday had been working at the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) base for several years. They did not return to the Philippines because the government had imposed a ban on travel to Afghanistan, according to Dimzon.
Labor Secretary Marianito Roque said their initial investigation showed the 10 Filipino workers were hired by a US firm to work at the NATO base in Afghanistan.
Reports said 16 out of 21 people aboard the Russian-owned civilian Mi-8 helicopter were killed when it slammed into the tarmac at Kandahar Air Base shortly after takeoff.
Roque said he has instructed the Philippine Overseas Labor Office (POLO) in Washington to make the necessary arrangements for the immediate return of the remains.
According to Roque, all the Filipino fatalities have been identified.
Among those killed was Marvin Najera of San Fernando, Pampanga, whose father Eduardo is also working in Afghanistan.
The other fatalities included Ely Cariño of Cabusao, Camarines Sur; Manolito Hornilla of Taysan, Batangas; Mark Joseph Mariano of Floridablanca, Pampanga; Celso Caralde of Butuan City; Rene D. Taboclaon (Cagayan de Oro City), Recardo E. Vallejos (Bislig, Surigao del Sur) and Noli M. Visda, of Lubao, Pampanga.
Although it was apparent that the 10 Filipinos were illegally deployed, Roque said the Philippine government would still provide the necessary assistance.
President Arroyo ordered the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) to extend all possible assistance to the families of the victims.
Press Secretary Cerge Remonde said that the directive was given to DFA undersecretary for migrant workers affairs Esteban Conejos who attended yesterday’s Cabinet meeting in Surigao.
Conejos said Philippine diplomatic officials from neighboring Pakistan have arrived in the Afghan capital, Kabul, to help identify the bodies and repatriate them.
He said the victims’ next of kin were informed yesterday.
“Our priority now is to work closely with the employer and the relevant authorities to identify the remains and cause their repatriation and ensure that all benefits due the workers are paid to their families,” Conejos said.
He said the DFA will help the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) and the Philippine Overseas Employment Administration (POEA) to find out how the 10 Filipinos ended up working in Afghanistan, notwithstanding the deployment ban.
Assurances
It was initially reported that Fluor Co., a US-based company, hired the 10 Filipinos despite the existing ban on deployment to Afghanistan.
Roque, however, said they are still confirming if Fluor Corp. was the real employer of the 10 Filipinos.
Fluor Corp., on the other hand, denied having employed the 10 Filipino fatalities, describing initial reports as “erroneous.”
Fluor spokesman Keith Stephens clarified the 10 Filipino workers were employed by subcontractor AIM Group Inc., a US-based construction firm.
According to Stephens, the accident occurred inside Kandahar Air Force Base’s secured perimeter in southern Afghanistan but no military and Fluor employees were onboard the helicopter.
“There is full investigation underway into the cause of the crash, but ISAF forces have confirmed that the crash was not due to any insurgent action,” Stephen said.
The AIM Group, on the other hand, said the next of kin for each of the Filipino workers killed in the crash had been notified.
“After positive identification is made of the bodies in Kandahar, these will be sent to Kuwait and then repatriated to the Philippines,” an official of the AIM Group said.
“We have several representatives in the Philippines who will ensure that the bodies are repatriated to the families,” the AIM said.
The AIM assured family members of each Filipino fatality that their deaths would be compensated.
“Each Filipino employee and his dependent family members will be eligible for payments under Defense Base Act Insurance and other policies that are in place,” the company said.
The AIM added that they would process the insurance claims as soon as possible and submit them to the insurance company.
The AIM also clarified that the 10 Filipino workers killed in the helicopter were already in Afghanistan when they started working for the company.

Jokulsarlon, Iceland
This lagoon is home to incredible ice formations so curvaceous they appear to have been waves frozen solid instantly and then polished to a glimmering blue smoothness. The lagoon sits as a buffer between Europe’s largest glacier and the sea, and as a result there is constant calving of the ice, forming icebergs that eventually drift out to sea, so no matter how often you visit, the view is always different and always changing, sometimes dramatically. Earlier this year, a huge section of the Breidamerkurjökull glacier shattered and as a result, Jokulsarlon just became Iceland’s deepest lake.



Bryce Canyon, United States
Bryce Canyon is not technically a canyon at all, but rather the east slope of the Paunsaguant Plateau, though once you see it, this nitpicking hardly matters. The stunning vistas around its 37-mile loop road showcase the park’s signature feature: countless delicate red rock spires carved by millions of years of wind and water, known locally as “hoodoos.” Thanks to its famous lack of ambient light pollution and ultra-dark night sky, it is also a mecca for astronomers, with ranger-led programs on summer nights.



Chott El-Jarid, Tunisia
One of the world’s largest salt lakes, Chott El-Jarid is also a rare endorheic or terminal lake, a closed system whose waters never reach the sea. Instead, with annual rainfalls of under four inches and summer temperatures in excess of 120 degrees, the lake often evaporates completely, leaving an enormous salt pan covering roughly 2,000 square miles. Visitors who come to see this unique landscape may get more than they bargain for: When dry, Chott El-Jarid is famous for producing fata morgana, an optical mirage that conjures up visions of everything from castles to people.



Perito Moreno Glacier, Argentina
In the Austral Andes near the Chilean border, Los Glaciares National Park has been a UNESCO World Heritage site for nearly 30 years. The park is devoted to glaciers, hence its name, and Perito Moreno is its most famous resident because of a unique nonstop cyclical action that causes this glacier to alternately advance and retreat. As part of this process, it is constantly calving, regularly producing spectacular ice falls from its exposed leading edge.



Olgas, Australia
Three dozen red domes erupting from the otherwise flat and barren Australian Outback are shocking enough to warrant their aboriginal name, “many heads.” The moving sun famously plays tricks with the earth’s color, and the Olgas can appear dramatically different based on the time of day. The Olgas are located in the same National Park, Uluru-Kata Tjuta, as more famous Ayers Rock, or Uluru, but the beauty of the Olgas is starkly different from its neighboring monolith. Plus, you can actually hike into the formation, through the internal Valley of the Winds, and see it up close and personal.



Tsingy de Bemaraha, Madagascar
So dense and needle-like are the worn limestone points comprising this natural preserve in Madagascar that it looks like nature’s version of a hairbrush. The earth has many examples of what geologists call karst topographies, where a layer of water soluble rock, usually limestone, dissolves over time causing fractures and sinkholes, but this is perhaps the most dramatic of them all. The barren stone spires are known locally as “tsingy,” hence the park’s name, but to the surprise of many visitors, the preserve also include vast wetlands, mangrove forests and a deep river valley, all teeming with wildlife.



Chocolate Hills, Philippines
The name of these unique mounds comes from the fact that the green grass covering them turns deep brown during the annual dry season, but is does not hurt that they bear a striking resemblance to Hershey Kisses. The stunner is how perfectly uniform each of the conical hills are, and inevitably, first-time visitors simply cannot believe they are not man-made. However, the scale of this construction project was best left to Mother Nature: There are too many of the hills to count — estimates range from over 1,200 to 1,700.

Business trip 'un. Company visit sa subcon ng company ko before. one thing notable about shanghai aside from the place is pagmopalit ka sa mga tiangge nila, dapat 80% off ang pinaka aim mo na price cut. :nuts::nuts::nuts:

nice, the food at Tavern restaurant really tastes good esp. their tempura.
I also miss the food at Peng U restaurant.
