filino May 30th, 2008, 04:31 AM Surigao City Cultural Center opens for business
By Harvey Entendez Diaz

CENTER OF ATTRACTION. Located at the heart of the city hall compound, the new orange edifice attracts people toward it.
Mayor Alfonso S. Casurra Wednesday led the opening of the newly constructed 400-seater Surigao City Cultural Center, together with city officials, department heads and employees, in a short blessing and inauguration ceremony celebrated by Fr. Perfecto Icat, DCS.
The Surigaonons got the chance to view for the first time the new cultural center which the mayor announced as fully equipped with state-of-the art facilities. “This center is state of the art. It is fully air-conditioned. It has WiFi Internet [connections] and has a VIP room and a caterer's room. The restrooms are at par with big cultural centers you can find [in major cities],” the mayor said.
http://i274.photobucket.com/albums/jj246/lagat_bucket/sccc-interior-1.jpg
STATE OF THE ART. Beautiful and large interior, high-end public-address system and WiFi Internet to boot—what else can you ask for?
The facilities list does not stop there, as high-end amplifiers, public address system and lighting system were installed to complement future conferences, meetings and evens to be held in the cultural center.
Besides the facilities, the center also sported impressive interior furniture and decorative ornaments which are mostly made of and assembled from old wood glazed with antique finish. Oriental carpets also accentuated the waiting area and the VIP room. The landscape outside of the center is a combination of ornamental shrubs, grass and ceramic jars and pots, which only intensified the light orange paint of the center's outside walls.
http://i274.photobucket.com/albums/jj246/lagat_bucket/sccc-interior-2.jpg
LUXURY IN WOOD. Woodcraft is the organic feature of the cultural center, just like this furniture set in the waiting area.
Mayor Casurra announced the introductory rate for those who want to use the cultural center in his message during the cocktail part of the ceremony. “For only P2,500 for the first four hours, you can use the cultural center for your events. The organizers shall pay [the amount] whether you are from the the government or a private entity. No one is exempted from the [rent] fee,” he said.
Mayor Casurra also underscored that the center can accommodate 400 people if seats are arranged side by side just like in seminars and conferences, but if tables are to be used, seating capacity will diminish to about 250.
http://i274.photobucket.com/albums/jj246/lagat_bucket/sccc-interior-3.jpg
COMFY COMFORT. The restrooms are accentuated with vase of flowers and tribal frames that make you feel comfy while comforting yourself of the call of nature.
Located in the heart of the city hall compound, the cultural center can be seen as a landmark by anyone who passes the city hall as it attracts people to tour around the compound just to get an up-close glimpse of the orange edifice.
The construction of the cultural center began in early March and was turned over to the city government after almost three months, which the mayor said was rightfully on time. The center was also funded by local coffers.

hey this is familiar. walked these parts late 80s.
i dunno if this is the case or true. way back during those times we had a flight for manila, kaso ingon sa ground crew, gamayng ulan posibleng ma-cancel ang flight. that day, cloudy and some showers, nacancel gyud among flight.

filino June 2nd, 2008, 05:19 AM Surigao Nightcafe sa City Boulevard?
Here’s another buzz from Kag.
***
Uyy, may CDF nasab kuno an ato mga Board Members, kaswerte sab nila, hehe.

c0kelitr0 June 2nd, 2008, 08:03 AM Re Surigao Night Cafe, why cant these local politicians walk the talk first before having it broadcasted all over the media?!?
what's wrong with broadcasting some plans for the city?!
it's to build anticipation and excitement among the businessmen and the market; otherwise known as marketing. this is, after all, a commercial project.
filino June 2nd, 2008, 10:07 AM politicians kc is mahilig lamang sa salita not sa gawa. hhehehe but if indeed it is true maganda naman ang move na yan
c0kelitr0 June 2nd, 2008, 10:25 AM ^^ that's why it's just a plan yet. not all plans can be implemented right away. announcing it merely gives businessmen and the public a heads up of things to come ;)
renvoi June 3rd, 2008, 05:20 AM yeah i agree, there is nothing wrong with the announcement of whatever plans any politicians have for the city. besides it is still a plan subject to approval of the city council.
However, in my opinion putting an ukay-ukay store creating a baratillo like atmosphere in the boulevard will surely destroy the beauty of the boulevard.

im not against those "crafted" plans.
the thing is we had enough of the plans and promises that needs translation into tangible results. what i mean is, what's next?
i wonder if you would like it when all you hear are all plans and ended up nothing happened about it.
if you're happy and contented with keeping yourself excited about the plans that remains a plan, fine. but for me, definitely not. if you broadcast a plan, make sure you'll do something for it to be realized.
c0kelitr0 June 3rd, 2008, 07:31 AM ^^ i exactly know what you mean. can you enumerate some projects that were never implemented and the projects that were implemented? kasi you sound like no projects were ever built there.

anyways..... i called up yesterday the asian spirit office for possible reservation assuming that the news here in surigao that it will resume flight this june 9 (that's on monday) is true. that is not what i mean. for a recap, we talked about MARKETING and sort of LIP SERVICE here.
there's nothing wrong with broadcasting the planned projects, the wrong is when all the those announced plans will only remain a plan.

guyzzz, FYI lang, the city government is consedering the idea of converting the city to highly urbanized city and be independent from the province. based on the law: the city can be converted to a highly urbanized city if it qualifies with atleast two of the requirements:
A: 200,000 population
B: minimum of 50,000,000.00 annual income
hmmm im not sure with the exact population of the city as of this moment but based on the State of the City Address (SOCA) of Mayor Pons the city earned 439,000,000.00 (correct if im wrong) for the year 2007.
"Mayor Casurra highlighted the increase in the locally generated income where the city earned an 11.66-percent increase per year since 2004, which roughly translated to an income of P439 million last year compared to P285 million earned in 2004. This was mainly due to the sound fiscal management that the City Government has institutionalized during the start of his administration, according to Mayor Cassura." source http://www.surigaocity.gov.ph

nice. Actually magkakaroon ng dalawang Baywalk Style ang Zamboanga City. The Paseo del Mar located at the Fort Pilar Shrine and the R.T Lim Blvd. Aayusin ang cawa-cawa sa R.T lim, i-extend un into 7meters. 20million pesos ang gagastusin dun.

the_islander June 6th, 2008, 03:03 AM looks nice but i hope there is more beyond the arcs...
if you were able to go to matina time square...
that is how we want our surigao boulevard to be.
stalls are clustered/grouped according to products and services, to that sort...
c0kelitr0 June 6th, 2008, 04:04 AM guyzzz, FYI lang, the city government is consedering the idea of converting the city to highly urbanized city and be independent from the province. based on the law: the city can be converted to a highly urbanized city if it qualifies with atleast two of the requirements:
A: 200,000 population
B: minimum of 50,000,000.00 annual income
hmmm im not sure with the exact population of the city as of this moment but based on the State of the City Address (SOCA) of Mayor Pons the city earned 439,000,000.00 (correct if im wrong) for the year 2007.
"Mayor Casurra highlighted the increase in the locally generated income where the city earned an 11.66-percent increase per year since 2004, which roughly translated to an income of P439 million last year compared to P285 million earned in 2004. This was mainly due to the sound fiscal management that the City Government has institutionalized during the start of his administration, according to Mayor Cassura." source http://www.surigaocity.gov.ph
what do younk guyzzzz?
based on the latest NSO official census (2007), Surigao's population is around 132,000. maybe by 2015 pa maging highly urbanized ang Surigao. I hope ma-reclassify na ang Surigao as a First Class City ;)

In your original post, the news was relayed by a politician. This is one example of what others were debating on this thread regarding press releases of politicians. Maybe before posting news from them, we really have to validate from involved companies baka it will simply give false hopes. I believe Surigaonons deserve not just press releases but the real thing. Anyways, the answer Asian Spirit gave you is the safest answer. Not just Asian Spirit will serve Surigao but all airlines with domestic operations will when the right time comes. That is when the expected BOOM of the city will be materialized.
the_islander June 10th, 2008, 03:18 AM i'd just like to inform you that surigao chamber of commerce and industry (scci) is opposing the move of the city councilor planning to put up a night cafe in the boulevard.
the surigao boulevard development authority (sbda) has not yet kicked-off in its management yet here's this councilor overtaking development plans.

Giving a press release about the possibility of the return of Asian Spirit to Surigao is very much acceptable but giving a definite pronouncement like "Asian Spirit Serving Surigao again starting June 9" is different. I myself was very happy then with the news pero dumating na lang ang June 9 ni walang posting sa official webpage ng Asian Spirit. I have high respects for Surigaonons and I feel they don't deserve to be misled by pronouncements of politicians.

GearX June 10th, 2008, 12:40 PM 4.7-B Euro seaport, airport development projects up for Dinagat Islands (http://www.positivenewsmedia.net/am2/publish/Tourism_24/4_7-B_Euro_seaport_airport_development_projects_up_for_Dinagat_Islands.shtml)
SAN JOSE, Dinagat Islands, June 11 (PNA)--A 4.7-billion Euro worth of development project is set to change the landscape of the newly created province of Dinagat Island within the year.
Engineer Ricardo L. Santillano, president and CEO of the PBCC Dretech Foundation Inc., (PDFI), said he had signed an agreement with REBC Builders led by Engineer Reynaldo Esplanada to implement the project's first phase within the year.
Dubbed as the "Dinagat Industrial Zone and Indigenous Project" (DIZIP), Santillano said the total development approach of the project will not only generate thousands of jobs to local residents, but will also jumpstart the economy of the newly created province.
"They are spending at least 4.7 Euro for the project," Santillano said, noting the project is the first of its kind in the country because it will greatly help indigenous peoples in the province like the Surigaonons and the Manobos.
Based on documents, the project includes construction of sea and airports, roads and bridges, schools, hospitals, housing facilities, an industrial zone, and a power plant that will harness wind and hydro power off the Surigao Bay.
"This will be a big boost for the province of Dinagat Islands," he said, noting that the province had 50.20 percent poverty incidence in 2000.
Dinagat Island is located north of the Surigao Strait. It is one of the major islands that used to comprise the province of Surigao Del Norte, but gained its autonomy in 2006.
It has a total land area of 80,205 hectares and is composed of seven municipalities namely, Dinagat, San Jose, Cagdianao, Basilisa, Libjo, Tubajon, and Loreto, with 100 barangays and at least 106,000 population.
Major industries in the province that include aquaculture and mining due to abundance of nickel and chromite, stand to benefit from this project.
However, the newly created province is largely under developed due to lack of major means of transportation like sea and airports.
Santillano said that REBC Builders and its allied companies vowed to construct an international sea port and an airport in the province on a Build, Operate and Transfer (BOT) scheme.
"I think that the seaport along with the airport is enough to jump start the progress of the province of the Dinagat Islands. (PNA)

hay nako, there's a lot of works to be done for the expansion of surigao city airport just in case. actually the city airport runway has been expanded already d lang na report/recorded sa DOT. dont have the exact lenght of the runway as of this moment pero yong naka record sa DOT ay dating lenght ng runway pa yon, dont know lang if corrected na ngayon. maybe the best thing to do if indeed e extend pa ang runway, siguro the LGU must divert the flow of surigao river kc ito yong nakabara kaya d na siya ma extend. but yun nga lang a lot works to do pa.

MANILA, Philippines—Australian firm Medusa Mining Ltd. expects to start mining for gold, iron and copper in the southern province of Surigao del Sur next week after getting permits covering the Kamarangan area, company managing director Geoff Davis said in a statement.
Work is planned to start in a site called Dumaag, where iron-rich samples had been collected, he said.
“The potential mineralization types are hosted by various [structures] that have been interpreted to cover an area approximately 1,200 meters by up to 1,000 meters,” Davis said.
He said detailed descriptions of gold, iron and copper sampling results from 21 iron-rich samples averaged 9.5 grams of gold per ton of ore and 37.5 percent iron.
The samples also yielded a copper value of 0.33 percent, which was higher than the findings that Medusa Mining announced last February, he added.
“It is apparent that the Kamarangan area represents a major target for gold, iron and copper,” Davis said.
The grant of drilling permits came following Medusa Mining’s announcement last April that it was on track with its first-phase expansion activities at its Co-O mine in Surigao del Sur.
The company said such activities would triple by late 2009 its yearly output from Co-O to 60,000 ounces of gold.
In a report to investors issued in April, Medusa said it was currently producing at an annualized 20,000 ounces, which would increase to 40,000 ounces in the second half of this year and to 50,000 ounces in the first half of 2009.
It also said it planned to start in July a second-phase expansion of the Co-O mine to increase production to 100,000 ounces of gold by the first quarter of 2010.
In a second-phase expanded operation, the Co-O gold mine’s plant capacity will reach 1,000 tons of ore daily, it said.
Also in April, Davis said the projected expanded output of the Co-O mine was based on an expanded resource of 713,00 ounces at 10.9 grams of gold per ton of ore.
“To achieve this production, the company has elected to sink a new shaft (called Hill View) to an initial depth of 420 meters, with the capacity for it to be deepened to 600 meters in the future,” he said. Edited by INQUIRER.net

DAVAO CITY (MindaNews/06 July) – Davao City tops the list nationwide as the most competitive among 20 metro cities in the 2007 assessment of the Asian Institute of Management (AIM) Policy Center, Dr. Federico Macaranas, AIM Executive Director announced during the presentation and recognition rites held at the Manila Intercontinental Hotel on July 4.
In the category of mid-size cities, General Santos City ranks second after Olongapo, among 24 mid-size cities, while Malaybalay City ranks second after San Fernando, among 45 small size cities.
Councilor Mabel Sunga–Acosta, acting vice mayor, represented the Davao City Government during the ceremonies and received the plaque of award from AIM President, Francis Estrada.
The cities were scored based on six “drivers of competitiveness” -- cost of doing business; dynamism of the local economy; human resources and training; infrastructure; responsiveness of LGU; and quality of life.
Macaranas said Davao City ranked 1st in Cost of Doing Business and Infrastructure, 3rd in the Responsiveness of the Local Government to Business needs, 4th in Dynamism of the Local Economy; and 7th in Human Resource and Training and Quality of Life.
MindaNews got a copy of the cities' scores.
Based on weighted scores, Davao City scored 7.06 points to make it to number 1, followed by Quezon City (6.61), Makati (6.58), Manila (6.43), Marikina (6.37) and Lapu-lapu (6.301).
Though they didn’t win any award, two more metro Visayas cities -- Cebu City (6.27) ranked 9th and Mandaue City (6.22) ranked 11th.
Macaranas announced that for mid-size cities, the top seven cities in alphabetical order are Cabanatuan, General Santos, Lucena, Olongapo, San Pablo, Tagum, and Tarlac.
Based on weighted scores, Olongapo topped with 7.05 followed by General Santos (6.94), Tarlac (6.8), San Pablo (6.75), Cabanatuan (6.74), Tagum (6.66), and Lucena (6.64).
Though they didn’t win any award, Butuan tied for the 9th place with Iloilo (6.58), Cagayan de Oro tied for the 11th place with Tacloban (6.49), Iligan ranked 13th (6.42), and Zamboanga 17th (6.19).
For small cities, Macaranas announced the top 12 based on alphabetical order as Bayawan. Calapan, Calbayog, Dagupan, Dipolog. Laoag, Malaybalay, Naga, San Fernando (La Union), Surigao, Tagbilaran and Tuguegarao.
Based on weighted scores, however, San Fernando topped with 7.55, followed by Malaybalay (7.11), Surigao (7.08), Tagbilaran (7.01), Laoag (7.0), Bayawan (6.78), Dipolog (6.75), Calbayog (6.73), Dagupan (6.72), Calapan (6.69), Tuguegarao (6.68) and Naga (6.65).
Though they didn’t win any award, Kidapawan tied for the 13th place with Kabankalan (6.61), Koronadal at 17th (6.55), Oroquieta at 21st (6.43), Ozamiz at 25th (6.3), Pagadian at 30th (6.1), Digos at 32nd (6.02), Panabo tied with Sorsogon for 35th (5.73), and Marawi City at 37th (5.26).

filino July 7th, 2008, 09:13 AM PAL gives free one-way tickets on local routes By Philippine News Agency
July 3, 2008
The country's flag carrier Philippine Airlines (PAL) has brought back its popular “Buy 1, Take 1” promotional-fare scheme that offers a free one-way domestic ticket for every such ticket bought.
Jaime J. Bautista said the promo is applicable to all PAL domestic services, including regular jet flights between Manila and 17 local points, as well as PAL Express turbo-prop flights from Manila and Cebu.
Also included in the promo are four PAL Express services to be launched on July 15, 2008, between Manila and the following provincial points – San Jose, Occidental Mindoro; Virac, Catanduanes; Calbayog, Samar; and Surigao City, Surigao de Norte.
Thus, passengers flying virtually anywhere across the country can enjoy the special-value de, Bautista said.
"Those traveling on a regular PAL jet service to a Luzon point need pay as low as P2,148, inclusive of air fare, fees and surcharges, for a one-way ticket," he said.
To a Visayas point by jet, the total outlay is as low as P2,876 one-way, while to a Mindanao point, it goes as low as P4,188 one-way. For PAL Express turbo-prop flights, the all-inclusive payment comes to as low as P1,986 one-way.
In return, the passenger gets a wholly free, one-way ticket, with zero air fare and all the attendant fees and surcharges waived.
The complimentary ticket can be used for the return journey or for another one-way flight to any PAL or PAL Express domestic point.
The free ticket may also be issued in the name of a passenger other than the holder of the paid ticket. A confirmed booking is required for both paid and free tickets, which must be issued together.
The promo deal can be availed of at PAL ticket offices or accredited travel agents until July 7, 2008 only. It is valid for travel between July 15 and October 15, 2008. A limited number of seats is covered by the promo.

The Asian Institute of Management (AIM) Policy Center, the research and intellectual resource arm of Asia’s premiere graduate school of business AIM, released on July 4 the final results of the 2007 Philippine Cities Competitiveness Ranking Project (PCCRP) in which Surigao City once again emerged as a top-performing city under the small-sized cities category.
Of the 41 small-sized cities surveyed by AIM Policy Center, 12 cities scored high ratings in the six drivers, which include cost of doing business, dynamism of the local economy, human resource and training, infrastructure, LGU responsiveness and quality of life. These drivers were used by AIM in assessing the competitiveness of metro, mid-sized and small-sized cities in the country.
Other top-performing small-sized cities include Bayawan, Calapan, Calbayog, Dagupan, Dipolog, Laoag, San Fernando (La Union), Malaybalay, Naga, Tagbilaran and Tuguegarao. Surigao City has been a top-performing city in the competitiveness ranking for three consecutive times since 2003.

In the 2005 PCCRP results, Surigao City earned the highest rating in the “cost of doing business” criteria. In the 2007 results, the city was No. 3 in the overall ratings after San Fernando and Malaybalay, while it got the fourth, third, third and fifth places in the drivers “cost of doing business,” “infrastructure,” “LGU responsiveness,” and “quality of life,” respectively.
The PCCRP is a biennial independent study conducted throughout the archipelago, which aims to rank cities on the basis of economic performance and responsiveness to business enterprise. Launched in 1999, the PCCRP envisions to promote national competitiveness by encouraging healthy competition among highly urbanized and emerging cities, emphasizing the crucial roles of small and medium enterprises as the backbone of local development. By gathering and compiling strategic data and providing focused analyses of the results, the PCCRP also seeks to cultivate competitive industries, promote healthy communities and maximize the economic potentials of the cities.
Over the years, the PCCRP results have served as benchmarks for local chief executives, city planners, and economic and development managers in improving their development strides in their cities.
This latest survey was launched and completed in collaboration with the German Technical Cooperation (GTZ), the International Finance Corp. (IFC), the International Labour Organization (ILO), SM Investments Inc. and the Petron Corp.

By Mary Ann Ll. Reyes
Monday, July 14, 2008
PAL Express will undertake its second major expansion with the addition of five provincial points from its secondary hub of Manila next week.
The low-fare, turbo-propeller unit of Philippine Airlines will start daily service to San Jose (Occidental Mindoro); Virac (Catanduanes); and Surigao City (Surigao del Norte) on July 15.
Calbayog (Samar) follows on July 17 with four flights weekly, and then Catarman, (Northern Samar) on August 1 with three flights weekly.
The 76-seater Bombardier Q400 turbo-prop aircraft will be deployed on four of the new routes except for San Jose, which will be served by the slightly smaller, 50-seater Bombardier Q300.
The ongoing “Buy 1, Take 1” promo fare on all jet and turbo-prop domestic services of PAL will also be made available to PAL Express. The promo sale, in fact, has been extended until July 21 for these new points from the original deadline on July 15 for others.
The promo offers passengers a free one-way ticket for every one-way ticket bought, with all fees and surcharges waived. The complimentary ticket can be used for the return journey or for another one-way flight. Travel is valid between July 15 and Oct. 15, 2008.
The addition of the five points to PAL Express’ Manila hub network follows on the heels of a similar expansion on July 1, when five routes were launched from the unit’s main hub at Mactan International Airport in Cebu.
These were the services between Cebu and Cagayan de Oro, Cebu and Ozamiz, Cebu and Dipolog, Cebu and Zamboanga, and Zamboanga and Davao.
The 10 new routes being added from July 1 to August 1 represent a more-than-doubling of PAL Express’ network over a one-month period. The low-fare brand took off May 5 with a service between Manila and Boracay (Caticlan).
Last May 19, its centerpiece Cebu hub opened with flights to Boracay, Bacolod, Butuan, General Santos, Tacloban and Puerto Princesa. Busuanga was added to the Manila hub the same day, for a total of eight PAL Express routes prior to July 1.
Company officials pointed out that PAL is no stranger to the latest island points, which are among the flag carrier’s pioneer provincial destinations and are now rejoining the network after a decade’s absence.
PAL first operated turbo-prop service to San Jose in 1947, Virac in 1949, Surigao in 1956, and Calbayog and Catarman in 1958. Flights were suspended in 1998 when PAL’s rehabilitation plan forced the airline to focus only on major routes.

Flights were suspended in 1998 when PAL’s rehabilitation plan forced the airline to focus only on major routes.
as of this time PAL Express is fullybookd 'til august, ano na kaya sa fiesta til december. :ohno:
if this will continue xpect more PAL flights from/to surigao
hmmm murag kabalikon ang asian spirit....

filino July 16th, 2008, 02:23 AM Commercial rice now costs P30 per kilo
By Fryan E. Abkilan
Philippine Information Agency-Caraga
July 14, 2008
After soaring to as high as P48 per kilo the other month, prices of commercial rice in Surigao City Public Market have gone down to about P30 to P35 per kilo this July.
National Food Authority (NFA) Information Officer Fe Moreno disclosed that the decrease in prices of commercial rice in the markets could be attributed to the massive distribution of NFA rice into the market recently.
Despite the start of the July-September lean months, NFA assured the public that they have adequate rice stocks in its warehouses.
Moreno bared that another shipment of rice arrived in the port of Surigao City yesterday, July 13 which contains 120,000 bags of Vietnam rice and is ready for distribution to the NFA accredited outlets in the region.
The arrival and distribution of Vietnam rice is just in time to address the soaring price increase that has affected the whole country.

finally PAL is back to serve surigaonon passengers. good that the aircraft is much bigger than those used by asian spirit. I think PAL should also have a flight from Cebu to surigao because there are lots of surigaonons in cebu and considering the small vessels plying the surigao-cebu route. I remember that back in the 90's surigao is served by PAL i think 3x a day with routes from manila-surigao and cebu-surigao in a smaller aircraft though.

filino July 18th, 2008, 10:23 AM British ambassador visits Surigao, opens up investment center
By Harvey Entendez Diaz
Surigaocity.gov.ph Correspondent
July 18, 2008
British Ambassador to the Philippines Peter Beckingham on Thursday visited Surigao City for a series of meetings with the local business sector here. Beckingham will meet city officials, some overseas investors and members of the local business chamber in his two-and-a-half day stay to discuss potential business investments from companies in the United Kingdom.
In a luncheon held at the Surigao City Cultural Center, Beckingham underscored the important relations shared by the Philippines and Great Britain. “There are two clear and straightforward reasons why two countries matter to each other … [First,] we issue about 50,000 visas a year for Filipinos to travel, to visit or indeed to go at work in the United Kingdom [as] the Philippine community has been increasingly recognized to be of huge value to us. The second reason is we are a big investor in the Philippines,” the ambassador said.
Despite the travel advisory for British nationals not to come to Mindanao, the British ambassador said that he is “very pleased to say that British companies are largely doing business here [in Mindanao].” In October last year, the United Kingdom Embassy raised an advisory warning its citizens “against all travel to Mindanao because of ongoing terrorist activity.”
Investment in mining
The ambassador’s visit was a result of mining exploration proposals of Anglo American in the province of Surigao del Norte, where Surigao City lies. Anglo American is one of the largest mining conglomerates in the world.
“One of the reasons I have come to Surigao is Anglo American, and I look forward very much to talking to them, to the representatives of the business community, about [Anglo American’s] plans [which is] a major investment in your province and affecting your city,” the ambassador said.
“I’ve had the opportunity to go and talk to the senior directors of Anglo American in London to talk about their investment and I know that they are very serious about it … I am completely confident [to say] that they will respect the environment in a way that they developed their mines in the Philippines. I’m confident that companies in the side of international flagship of Anglo American can handle and develop [mines] which will be environmentally and socially friendly and, I believe, with great benefits to the Philippines,” the ambassador said further.
Surigao’s investment center inaugurated
The ambassador’s visit was also the highlight of the opening of the newly created Investment Assistance Center (IAC) at the ground floor of the city hall's main building. Beckingham and Mayor Alfonso S. Casurra led the ribbon-cutting ceremony, together with Ma. Lourdes Arcenas of the Mindanao Business Council, members of the city council, and personalities from the local business sector. The IAC serves as the city’s one-stop center for investors looking for information to get them started in doing business here.
The ambassador said that the opening of the IAC was timely as his visit was very much involved with business. “In your city you are looking for overseas investors, and indeed there are Korean businessmen here with us today,” Beckingham said. Some Korean investors, who were meeting up with Mayor Casurra, were also present during the luncheon to witness Beckingham’s visit.
The creation of the IAC brought in services aimed at businessmen, providing them with assistance in terms of information to business data, coordination with government agencies and private institutions, and tie-ups with local business chamber and industry associations.

The design of this new structure not only ruined the view of the castle it ruined the entire luneta. The prov. government should have built a structure that would compliment with the other structures within the luneta. Federalism (http://www.philstar.com/archives.php?aid=2008072892&type=2)
IYO ANTOY Ni Antolin dela Serna
Tuesday, July 29, 2008
Under the present unitary system (a remnant of our colonial past imposed by the Spaniards and the Americans to advance their colonial imperial interests), practically all powers are vested in a highly centralized government.
“The concentration of power at the top inevitably results in political and economic imbalance and injustice. It is the reason why many regions in the Philippines remain poor and underdeveloped. Poverty in turn spawned widespread criminality, rebellion and secession, especially in neglected areas in Mindanao and many parts of Luzon and the Visayas.”
Unsa may tan-aw nimo ini, Dro?

after 10 years being away from surigao city, the houses between caltex and palma remains the same. No new establishment on that part.
Also, i never thought that Rizal St. is so narrow. The City however, retains its cleanliness.

wow nice aerial view of surigao city.
Surigao city is really expanding. Before the urban barangays of surigao city are washington and taft only. Now Brgys. Luna, Canlanipa and San Juan are already urbanized. The streets in San Juan are so defined and well planned. I wonder though if San Juan is still prone to flooding. These pictures showed that surigao should expand in barangays luna and rizal because taft and washington are so densed, meaning the population is so concentrated in that part of the city.
