Butuan City - Department of Education (DepEd) Secretary Jesli A. Lapus flew here recently to receive the ceremonial key for five newly-constructed two-room school buildings donated to the Caraga Region office of DepEd by the Spanish government through its Improvement of the Quality of Primary Education (IQPE) program.

The ceremonial key was personally turned over to Lapus by Spanish Ambassador to the Philippines Miguel Angel Barba during appropriate rites held at the compound of the Cahayagan Elementary School in Carmen town, Agusan del Norte, one of the recipient schools.

Newly appointed Caraga DepEd Director Isabelita M. Borres and Agusan del Norte Schools Division Superintendent Ponciano Q. Joven witnessed the turnover ceremony which was attended by local government officials and field school officials from the five recipient towns.

Lapus said the new school building, built for all-weather conditions, costs more than P1 million each.

The project represents the last phase of a bilateral agreement between Spain and the Philippines designed to help improve access to quality basic education in the Caraga Region.

The other donated school buildings, Lapus said, are located in Siargao and Dinagat Islands.
According to Lapus, the five Caraga school structures donated by the Spanish government were constructed under the DepEd's Principal-Led School Building program.

MANILA, Philippines - Powerade-Team Pilipinas coach Yeng Guiao believes there is still enough time to whip up the squad into its finest form for the Fiba Asia Championships tipping off on Aug. 6 in Tianjin, China .

“For the next six days, they will eat, sleep and breathe basketball,” Guiao said yesterday. “We need to be in better shape. I know we have one week to go, but I think we can still do it.”

Appearing at the PSA Forum together with PBA commissioner Sonny Barrios, Guiao said his squad is making the necessary adjustments after getting a glimpse of the competition at the recent Jones Cup in Taipei, where the RP five won just two of its eight games.

“We have to improve our three-point shooting,” said Guiao. “If they (players) come up to expectations and they’re hitting their three-point shots, we will always have a chance of winning games.”

Guiao said his team should also take advantage of international officiating which allows a lot of contact between players, unlike in the PBA.
“We should run more picks in our half-court game to free up our shooters,” he added. “We have to take advantage that international officiating allows a lot of contact, unlike in the PBA. And psychologically, we still have to adjust.”

The record in the Jones Cup does not necessarily reflect the real state of the squad, Guiao assured sportswriters. The RP cagers lost by double-digit margins to Jordan, Iran, Lebanon, Chinese-Taipei and South Korea and dropped a close match to Japan.

“We just played our natural game in the Jones Cup,” he said, pointing out that the RP cagers did not employ detailed gameplan and even experimented on the zone defense.
“But we did not intentionally try to lose. I think it was better that they saw a weak RP team because I know the other teams have also not shown their real forms.”
Both Guiao and Barrios expressed optimism that the squad will be able to clinch one of the three Asian berths in the World Championships in Istanbul, Turkey, next year.

“It’s still possible,” said Guiao, whose team has been grouped with Japan, Korea and Sri Lanka in Tianjin. “Our grouping already gives us an advantage.”
If the RP cagers hurdle their group, they will join the qualifiers from Group B, consisting of reigning champion Iran, Uzbekistan, Chinese-Taipei and Kuwait.
Most of the Middle East squads, including Lebanon and Jordan, as well as traditional powerhouse China are expected to easily reach the quarterfinals.
“We cannot escape the Middle East teams in the quarterfinals,” said Guiao during the public sports program sponsored by Pagcor, Outlast Battery, Accel and Shakey’s. “Nevertheless, reaching the quarterfinals is already an improvement and we can celebrate if we make it to the semifinals.”

by the way sir...i read in the papers we have a new ordinance creating the Frachising office for Tricycles and trisikad...mora'g paatras man cguro ini na move in terms of develoment nan ato syudad...is this not sort of encouraging(perhaps in the guise of regulating) nan ini na mga mode of transpo..i think in most bigger cities wala na man kau mga tricycle save in interior nga mga lugar or streets...

although it does not directly translate to slow progress when we have those trikes in the city but i think with that ordinance instead of adopting modern transportation in the city nag allow naman noon kita nan franchise for sikad. na uno na noon ini. I wasnt able to read the whole context of the ordinance but i do hope that the sikad franchise is not applicable in the city center. instead of passing such ordinance why not give the multicabs more roads/routes and totally implement the national law in disallowing the trikes to enter the national roads all over the city.
