MANILA - President Arroyo on Friday ordered the Department of Health to step up its monitoring of the spread of Influenza A (H1N1) cases in the country amid fears that a second wave of the virus could affect nine million Filipinos.

Press Secretary Cerge Remonde said the President has instructed the DOH to improve its coordination with the World Health Organization as to real-time exchange of information and data on the A (H1N1) virus.

"The President also ordered hastening of the capacitation of the laboratories of government hospitals for more testing in case of epidemics. She also provisioned that government hospitals to be better prepared to manage complicated cases that may be exacerbated by the virus," Remonde told reporters.

Health Secretary Francisco Duque III earlier said a second wave of A (H1N1) infections in the Philippines could affect one-tenth of the population or about nine million Filipinos, but stressed there are no indications that the virus would worsen.

“So if our population is about 90 million, a second wave of A(H1N1) could affect as many as nine million Filipinos,” Duque told the Philippine Star during a cluster meeting of mayors from Mindanao under the League of Municipalities of the Philippines (LMP).

But Duque said he recently got assurance from a WHO official that there were no indications that the A(H1N1) virus has mutated into a more virulent strain.

Duque noted that dengue fever and even ordinary flu were more fatal than A(H1N1) in the Philippines.

DOH records show 28 people infected with A(H1N1) have died in the country as of August 28. Nearly 5,000 have been infected though more than 96 percent of the cases have fully recovered.

mao ba? pero kung ang capacity sa atong grandstand is more than triple pa sa 3000, as previously mentioned (3X 3500 seater). does it mean na mas daghan diay ang VIPs, media and guest kumpara sa public na mutan-aw? aguy, wala ni sila kitaon ani nga festivity. hehehe

for me murag 10thou ang capacity ng sports complex, jaun sa main grandstand ra ug sa ubos jaun sa basketball court na area. maski 5thou unta for the public kaya paman... ang tickets jaun sa CTO

Bacuag, Surigao Del Norte – Mayor Sheila Mae Orquina-Cebedo recently made a public announcement that she will not be joining the fast approaching Bonok-Bonok Marajaw Karajaw Dance Festival slated on Sept. 10, 2009 during the fiesta celebration of Surigao City.

Dubbed as “Cinderella Mayor” because of her stunning looks and good-natured character, Cebedo said she has priority projects in her town which needs her serious attention. She relayed the same during a recent interview.

Cebedo explained that one of her administration’s thrusts is to observe austerity measures to help her town survive in the present global financial crisis. She said that one of her priority projects to be finished this year is the modern public market building which costs 9 millionGorgeous Sheila Mae Orquina-Cebedo, lady town mayor of Bacuag, is shown in this photo donning a crow-inspired costume called “Inuwak” which was the official dance outfit of her delegation of dancers and which turned out as the overwhelming crowd favorite during the previous year’s Bonok-bonok festival.

Almont Hotel is a big threat to Tavern and Gateway.......but I foresee more and more hotels and resort coming in to cater supplementary tourist and business travelers specially pag mag full swing na an big mining companies.

No...it is a processing plant for nickel ipur...i just came in from Taganito to attend the groundbreaking of the GK site for the community as part of Taganito Mining Corp.'s community development projects...when this processing plant operates, it will generate more employment for the people of Surigao..

Thanks Mam Raisey, now Surigao is underway to get back the Marinduque time na grabe ka bibo. I remember early 80's Surigao City had 4 big cinemas and they we're both having good business during that time. i heard nga mo host ug major sports event ang city next year. dili ton imposible kay surigao now is the home of the most modern sports facilities in the region if not in entire mindanao.

Sakay namu sa plane an the Company and was able to have a little talk with Moi, their leader sa pre departure in manila. Unfortunately i could naot make it sa concert because of the alumni homecoming of San Nicoals College. Kahamuk ako na miss the gimik.:bash:

THE Friendship Kayak Expedition is an attempt to traverse the entire distance of the Philippine archipelago from Sarangani to Ilocos Norte, a journey of 3,300 kilometers over 100 days. This is a feat that has never been done before, and will expect to showcase the raw beauty of the country's landscape and warm hospitality of Filipinos.

The kayak team is expected to arrive in Davao City at noontime today, Monday. Kayakers and supporters are on hand to welcome the group and a short press conference will follow as they dock by Pearl Farm Marina in Lanang.

The team will stay for a day to rest before they move on to the next stop, which is Siargao.

This expedition aims to inspire everyone with its message of perseverance, exploration, and hope. It also celebrates the 40th anniversary of Filipino-Singaporean diplomatic relations, and is also instrumental in bringing attention to the Department of Tourism's latest campaign in developing adventure tourism thru kayaking.

The kayak team paddlers are composed of one Singaporean and two Filipinos. Khoo Swee Chiow is an extreme adventurer, author and inspirational speaker who has climbed Mount Everest twice and explored both south and north poles. He has successfully attempted world record feats from cycling from Singapore to Beijing, swimming in Malacca Straits, world's longest scuba dive and world's longest journey on skates. He has undergone months of kayak training prior to this event.

Erwin Glenn "Buzzy" Budlong of Cebu and Arnel Gabutero from Davao City are expert kayakers, but none have attempted kayaking at this distance before. Their adventure will test the human spirit, the physical and mental strength, problem-solving skills and teamwork. They will experience what the country has to offer from each island stop. New friendships will be forged and exciting stories told.

In Sarangani, Gov. Miguel Dominguez sent them off supportively from the beach in Gumasa, Glan last August 31.

Joining them in the support boat is a small crew of Singaporeans and Filipinos who takes care of provisions, safety, documentation and logistics in every stop. Keeping track of the expedition on land are Toby Martin, expedition manager; Randell "Buko" Raymundo, expedition video documentary producer; and Randy Su, expedition logistics director.

Martin explained how he hopes this would be an inspiring community effort, where everyone supports and encourages them as they finish the unprecedented trek in three months, unless typhoons and strong winds will delay them. He invites everyone to keep track of the kayakers through www.friendshipkayak.com, where a blog is posted for regular updates as well as a map tracking their progress. Updates can also be located on their Facebook.

Martin also said funds are continuously being raised to complete this effort. For now, the expedition has sufficient finances and sponsorship to complete the trip to Boracay, which is only half the journey. The team is hoping more support from the media and the locals they visit to generate more funds. Primer Group, holding company of ROX and Columbia, is a major sponsor.

From the starting point in Sarangani which is the southernmost point in Mindanao, other highlights of the route will be Davao (Mati, Bislig, Tandag, Surigao, Maasin), Bohol, Cebu, Boracay (midpoint of expedition), Mindoro, Batangas, Manila, Subic Bay, Alaminos, Lingayen, Dagupan, San Fernando, Candon, Vigan, Laoag, all the way to its finish point in Maira-ira Point in Pagudpud, the northernmost point of Luzon. They will also be passing through Palawan, the country's top kayak destination.

Nickel miner pays stock dividends

ZAMORA-LED Taganito Mining Corp. has hiked its authorized capital by more than three times to P2 billion to pay investors their share in the company’s profits, documents from the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) showed. Of the new shares, P850 million were issued as dividends to stockholders Hinatuan Mining Corp. (P552.5 million), Pacific Metals Co. Ltd. (P284.75 million) and Sojitz Corp. (P12.75 million).

The capital increase was approved by the company’s board and shareholders on June 2, while the SEC gave its nod to the plan on Aug. 28. The stock dividend declaration raised the nickel miner’s paid-up capital to P1.5 billion. Last year, Taganito Mining’s profits were cut by almost half to P951.25 million after sales dropped to P2.13 billion from P4.25 billion in 2007. It paid P845 million in dividends in 2008 from P300 million the previous year, documents from the SEC showed. The company, headed by businessman Manuel B. Zamora, has the exclusive right to explore and develop 3,279 hectares in Claver, Surigao del Norte. The nickel miner, which started operations in 1989, holds a 25-year license which may be renewed for 25 more years. Taganito Mining, whose parent firm is Nickel Asia Corp., exports its output to customers in Australia, China and Japan. In May, Japanese mining firm Sumitomo Metal Mining Co. Ltd. said it would team up with Nickel Asia to put up a P3-billion ore processing plant in northeastern Mindanao next year. (Business World)

Cantilan back out because the school whihc would have represented them did not want to come kay "pildi" ra gihapon. The LGU apologized for this.

Ok ra kanang wala apili sa ilang festival nga dili mu attend but kadtong gi-apilan sa surigao should also reciprocate the goodwill. Excuse ang Tacloban kay health reason.

But then again sakto jud ka reg, dili lalin mugasto nya walay pa consuelo.

Just finished our staff meeting at Almont Maharlika. Per info of tourism officer six (6) ra kan ka contingents - BUTUAN, MIS OR, BUYONGAN, GL, SNNHS and SWCES. nag-back out an Cantilan, Tacloban and Cotabato.

Dili kaha other issues have something to do with it? Consider:

Cantilan, SDS - Remember Pichay country baya ni.

Cabadbaran, ADN - Remember Surigao City was one of those which opposed the Cityhood of Cabadbaran until the Supreme Court ruled against their cityhood.

I dont know about Tacloban though. But as I see it, their reason is valid.

Cantilan back out because the school whihc would have represented them did not want to come kay "pildi" ra gihapon. The LGU apologized for this.

bitaw sab, kay modayu ra kan man kaw, make sure you have to show something or else masipgan ra ijo place. pero atleast tana ila pud gipakita ang ila participation the fact na ang city participated sa ila festival. one way of promoting man gud ini sa ato respective festival, labi na sa kuman na we are trying to promote our own festivals sa iban.

amo sab pero in a long run man gud, maka help man gihapon ini kay it's one way of promoting our respective festivals man lagi pero we cant blame pud sa LGU na dili mo participate most specially kung kulang jud ug support. anyway, i would say na with a small number of entries, kulang jud sa promotion. even kuman, dili nimo ma feel ang bonok-bonok festival atmospher. :bash:, again, useless ang pagpadala sa mga tourism representative to attend any tourism events kay waya man nila ma apply.

Ang ako ba basin moingon ang lugar nga gi apilan. "Uy, kamo baya boluntaryo ni apil diri. Pasabot automatic mobalos mi kay nianhi mo?"

Though this may rather in bad taste, pero this could be a possibility. There are no written MOAs about a contingent participating in a festival out of reciprocity. When an LGU joins a festival, it can only hope the other LGUs to return the favor. Pero if they will not join, nothing can be done about it.

Again, the tactic of sending contingents in the hopes they will participate in return should be re-assessed.

I think bigger prizes, more consolation prizes and good promotion and adversiting is a better motivation for other LGUs to participate without resorting to joining their festivals so that they will return the favor.

^^ actually its not a tactic nor do you need a written contract for that. Its called civility and respect. The LGUs do not "volunteer" in the sense that they particiapted without any invitation from the host LGU. Without the invitation from the host LGU to join their festival, dili man mu participate. Once your invitation is accepted and the other LGUs (with all their expenses, rehearsals etc.), the least the host can do is return the favor by particiapting in the festivals of their invited LGUs.

While I agree that bigger prizes would attract more contingents, if the host LGU cant afford to do so, why force the issue? Bongga tood imu festival but after that, the LGu will suffer for lack of funds. Its like the fiesta, magka utang-utang para makapakaon sa mga bisita, pero pagkahuman, an pamilya ya nay makaon. does not make sense.

GMA signed Special Patent 3745 106 HECTARES NONOC ECO-ZONE: “CASURRA LEGACY” to Surigao

As he bid farewell to the City in 2010, the country’s Most Outstanding City Mayor Pons Casurra now have a monumental legacy for the Surigaonons, as President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo finally signed the Special Patent No. 3745 declaring the One Million Sixty Four Thousand Seven Hundred Sixty (1,064,760) Square Meters or more or less 106 hectares area in Nonoc Island be donated in favor to the City Government. The said area covers the entire location of the Special Economic Zone where all Philnico facilities are situated.

The Special Patent will now give the City Government its absolute ownership and rights of the area which would provide full authority to transact and negotiate whoever interested investors who wanted to re-operate the mothballed Nickel Refinery in Nonoc Island.

City Mayor Alfonso Casurra in an exclusive interview with Island Post, this is one of the most significant success stories rendered by his administration since he assumed office as city’s chief executive.

“We are doing this effort since 2006 and now, it was finally granted in our favor… I am so proud and happy to tell the Surigaonons of this development” he said.

In 1999 during the incumbency of deposed President Joseph Estrada, a Presidential Proclamation No. 172 and 192 has been signed and issued by the latter, declaring the same area be conveyed to the City of Surigao but still needs a Special Patent for its absolute ownership.

The Land Management Bureau under the office of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) had thoroughly reviewed and approved all the technical descriptions and come up with a recommendation to Environment Secretary Lito Atienza. The DENR favorably indorsed the same to the office of the President and Pres. Arroyo herself finally signed the Special Patent just recently.

Casurra further revealed that the only regrettable part in that considered blue-chip investment in Nonoc Island is that, despite the efforts taken by the city government and its officials to attract foreign investors, they don’t have the luxury time to materialize the re-opening of the mothballed nickel refinery because of the various obstacles and stumbling blocks encountered during the negotiation period.

But still the city was able to collect taxes out from the extraction of ores in the Nonoc area which will be transported to foreign lands.

He, however, expresses high hopes that the next national and city administrations will be able to push through another leap of development in that said area in Nonoc Island to somehow bring back the life of the nickel plant to provide a brighter economic future for the Surigaonons, Casurra said.

In related development, various supporters claimed that Special Patent 3745 be tagged as a “CASURRA LEGACY”, the mayor simply replied “WELL HISTORY WILL JUDGE ME ON THAT”…
