I'll try and get some pics as soon as I can. For those of you unsure of it's whereabouts, it's the one directly behind the 14-storey hotel planned for Great Ancoats Street (see http://www.skyscrapercity.com/showthread.php?t=469855)

WOW! That's fuck-ugly isn't it, I'm almost speechless.
It's rank.
Chogmook April 15th, 2008, 09:54 PM ^^ Are they planning to rebuild the White House pub?! :jk:
Anyway, the fab hotel with the red/blue glass facade will hide this nicely anyway! :)
SteKnight April 16th, 2008, 10:05 PM WOW! That's fuck-ugly isn't it, I'm almost speechless.
It's rank.
I know - it's got a face only a mother could love.
It looks like some giant nuclear bunker at the moment, with the amount of concrete they're using. As Chogs says, I'm looking foward to the new hotel obliterating the view of it from the main road.
Slow Burn April 16th, 2008, 10:22 PM The concrete frame is about as attractive as this building is going to get.
This will last no more than 20 years before it's ripped down and replaced! It's just breathtakingly awful!!!!
Comdot April 17th, 2008, 04:46 PM it's undoubtably one of the cheapest computer renderings i've ever seen (so what). after much thought i now think the design isn't that bad. the tower portion where there is a huge brick wall will be covered from view i think by the new hotel.

Admittedly it might not be too bad if that end wall is covered. I didn't know a hotel was proposed next to it, quirky design or what?
crazymanc1 April 27th, 2008, 04:49 PM Any word on the hotel at the moment?
ferge April 27th, 2008, 06:30 PM I keep forgetting what this development is when seeing which threads have new posts.. and then I fall for looking again :( It is a shit build, looks like something firefighters would practice tackling fires in..

rolybling May 27th, 2008, 11:18 PM lots of red brick already I see on the lower level, no fancy time consuming cladding job for this one, no. God help us when its completely covered in it. There needs to be some seriously mature trees planted all around this and every tenant/owner encouraged to have some plants flowers whatever on the outside of their apartments just to cover this mess up a bit.
http://www.skyscrapernews.com/images/pics/4752LaystallHouse_pic1.jpg
It reminds me of some 70s council flats that might have sprung up in Gorton or somewhere.
Comdot May 27th, 2008, 11:26 PM would one of these do it? ;)

rolybling May 27th, 2008, 11:32 PM it goes some way to hiding it but the front of the building is no more appealing than the side
yesevil May 29th, 2008, 02:50 PM In fairness, the bricks in the photo above don't appear to be as garishly pink as those in the render. Still, a LOT of bricks!!

monkey_rat June 16th, 2008, 11:02 PM The brick is nice.
This is one of the most unfairly maligned buildings on here, it interacts with the street well (obviously excluding the side facing great ancoats street, but I'm banking on the hotel going there), has similar brick to nearby buildings and is reasonably tall. I'd much prefer something like this than ILVA with its fuck off concrete wall facing the street.

lamarkia1 July 1st, 2008, 12:31 PM Assuming the building next door is staying (looks like the front might be listed?) then bricks will look better next to it. The windows are bloody awful though. :(

good grief, it's worse than I thought, if there was an icon for a steaming pile of shit I'd insert it but instead I'll just have to use this :bash: and this :ohno:
The Longford October 25th, 2008, 03:19 PM I actually think it looks better than promised. I'm willing to give it a chance - and this is from someone who hates red brick.
rolybling October 25th, 2008, 09:26 PM better? no way, it's fuck ugly and looks much worse than I first anticipated, the window spaces don't even look square to me, truly dreadful longy
The Longford October 25th, 2008, 09:43 PM Nah - the render had bright orange bricks with a bright white mortar. In reality both brick stock and mortar are a much much subtle affair.
I like the fenestration pattern and once again the reveals appear much stronger than the render would have us believe - i even quite like the tower aspect - it reminds me a bit of an inter war town hall or bus garage or Aytoun Street dole office or something (thats no bad thing by the way).
I'm going to stick my neck out say that i actually like it so far.
A pleasant surprise from the render.
SteKnight October 25th, 2008, 10:57 PM the window spaces don't even look square to me
Yeah, that's probably my photo-taking skills at work.
dgnr8 October 26th, 2008, 02:24 AM Reminds me of a fire station, plus training tower.
Which isn't a good thing.
rolybling October 26th, 2008, 09:47 AM it reminds me a bit of an inter war town hall or bus garage or Aytoun Street dole office or something (thats no bad thing by the way).
A bus garage or Aytoun St dole office, you're spot on thats exactly what it looks like [thats no good thing by the way]. :)
monkey_rat October 26th, 2008, 11:39 AM I don't understand why there is such hatred for this building. The side facing onto Great Ancoats Street is a bit gash but eventually something else will get built there.
If all the roads leading from the northern quarter/piccadilly to Great Ancoats Street had similar builds (and there is a lot of wasteland particularly around the newton street/port street area), boring as they may be, it would connect the centre to East Manchester really well, adding a nice bit of bulk.
Alot of people like the Ilva building but this is, to me, is better. It doesn't include another bloody car park nor is it an angle to great ancoats street nor does it slap a massive concrete barricade against a side road (laystall street?) which is one of the walking routes to and from town.
Its just a boring safe red brick building that nicely fills a gap, and Manchester could do with a few more of these.

Slow Burn August 7th, 2009, 10:08 PM This is actually pretty decent filler. The hotel needs to be built on the brick wall side though to complete it.
monkey_rat August 8th, 2009, 01:39 PM aye, i've always maintained this is fine. Not everything needs to be flashy. ILVA has fucked up the area though, I'd rather see the entire plot demolished than taken by another retailer.
ferge August 8th, 2009, 04:24 PM I originally hated the renders of this but in reality its not a bad little building
Comdot August 8th, 2009, 04:58 PM i wasn't as sceptical as others when i saw the renders but now i'm not sure if i can stand it. the design seems messy to me with the top floors of the tower in particular. i think the building looks very cheap indeed when seen in the flesh and the kind of budget the exterior is built to reminds me of much shorter apartment buildings, i don't think this is an example of 'tall buildings should be of higher quality', if anything i'd say the tower is worse than shorter apartment blocks. i'd not like to imagine what ancoats would look like with more than one of these.
rolybling August 8th, 2009, 06:04 PM What he's trying to say is it's complete and utter shit, just as I imagined it would be.
Comdot August 8th, 2009, 06:11 PM the planning app was received over 6 years ago, before ancoats really took off. i can imagine that the council were perhaps eager to get anyone building in the area back then.
rolybling August 8th, 2009, 09:14 PM I'm not sure that's a good enough excuse, anyway we're stuck with it now :(
andysimo123 November 11th, 2009, 11:48 PM This finished now? or is it still an empty block?

It still looks empty. We photographed it on Monday ready for listing on our site, but we can't find out any details about who's selling it or who it belongs to.

macc November 12th, 2009, 12:04 PM I think it was supposed to be for a 3* hotel. Maybe they built it speculatively and never signed an operator.
highriser November 12th, 2009, 12:10 PM No Macc the hotel was suppose to be fronting onto Gt Ancoats St next to this , thats why its just a blank brick wall at that end od the development
Gerbil November 13th, 2009, 12:00 AM Empty and ready for demolition.
The photo's on here don't do justice to how monumentally bad it looks when you come down Old Mill Street from the other side of the ring road.
Having said that, the shopping centre opposite doesn't do it any favours.
Manchesterwill November 13th, 2009, 10:41 AM I think it looks quite nice, the original renders were awfull though.
My main problem is the surrounding area looks terrible and tatty, that road it's full of nasty takeaways and 2-3 prostitute houses.
Same goes with Skyline, nice block of apartments that's surrounded by rubble and shite.
