There is a skybar thread, but it features kiddie choons and people don't click on links to anything that is more than five years old, or that is genuinely contemporary or unusual or new but not mainstream...... It's very depressing.

So let's have a grown-up and fun music thread for what music people are listening to on a daily basis.

I'm actually not listening to music this evening, so won't post one just yet. But if you are, and it's on youtube, just embed the vid and share it.

Nice one Poli laaarrrgghh.

This thread has a namesake on the UK Skybar, which is full of teenaged scum posting up their horrible "music".

Anyway, here's a nice jazzy number, you kinda have to wait til the last half for the best bits - the guitar solo from 4:48 is splendid sir; although to appreciate the conceptual whole, you must listen to all of it. Or die. Note the random bed in the middle of the set.

This is one of my favourite music videos. Captain Beefheart in his fat, meat head days, sounding very creepy. It is fantastic live music, but if you don't like it turn the music off and just watch this band of weirdos strutting about in crazy, 70s charity-shop garb. The second vid sounds a lot better but has a crapper picture...

A really interesting version of Stevie Wonder - living for the city - the sound quality is very live, and I don't know who the drummer is but obviously he wasn't learning on the job

The Cramps in 1978 playing for the inmates of Napa State Mental Hospital. The low-fi suits the vid and I think the inmate participation reflects the humanitarianism of the group:lol:

Good one Dave.

Here's a gooden.. a bit of reggae from when it was all the rage. Blondie "The Tide is High". I'm not doing this on purpose, but this is another amusing video - note the little Darth Vader creature, and what it is revealed to be at the end. :hahaha:

My musical tastes are eclectic.

Grew up on Hip-Hop.

Listen to everything from underground house to rock. Drum n Bass to The Smiths.

The La's to Randy Crawford.

Lots of 1960s and 70's black music. Northern Soul, Disco, mix cd's, larry levan.

I listen to everything.

Funky live version of Taxes by Sharon Jones and the Dap-Kings. She really has a pop at Dubya in the intro.
BTW, anything on the Daptone label is so damn funky!

As you say liver not really my cup of tea,its a bit to mellow for me and i hate most cover versions,i prefer the original version, cant remember who sang it now.
i've been listening to my first 5 or 6 'youtubes ' on this thread for around 20 years now and i love it, i know its an acquired taste but there you go!.The opera post Madam Butterfly by Puccini is actually the only opera cd that i own, and i think its superb, i dont know if youve heard of an Italian film director called Dario Argento ,he does mostly 'giallo's' italian whodunnit/slasher type horror films and he includes a lot of classic opera in his soundtracks, and thats how i became interested in the cd,its really soothing but you've got to be in the mood

Trouble with youtube is that it makes it too easy to listen to old stuff. You'd never bother dragging old LPs or tapes out of the loft, but with youtube a lot of it is there with a click of the mouse. So I wonder if I am listening to too much old stuff and not enough new stuff now. Anyway, I don't care really, as good music is good music whatever era it's from. I've started listening to old stuff I never heard first time round - like this by Steve Winwood. I'd never heard this (original) version before, I was searching for a cover of it I knew, by Joe Cocker, and found this.

The Undertones - My Perfect Cousin (1980)
I loved this band and the lyrics still make me laugh.
-------------
Now I've got a cousin called Kevin
He's sure to go to heaven
Always spotless clean and neat
The smoothest you can get them
He's got a fur lined sheepskin jacket
My ma said they cost a packet
She won't even let me explain
That me and Kevin were just not the same

Oh my perfect cousin
What I like to do he doesn't
He's his family's private joy
His mothers little golden boy

He's gotta degree in economics
Maths - physics and bionics
He thinks that I'm a cabbage
Cos I hate university challenge
Even at the age of ten
Smart boy Kevin was a smart boy then
He always beat me at Subbuteo
Cos he flicked the kick
And I didn't know

Oh my perfect cousin ..

His mother bought him a synthesizer
Got the Human League into advise her
Now he's making lots of noise
Playing along with the art school boys
Girls try to attract his attention
But what a shame it's in vain total rejection
He will never be left on the shelf
Cos Kevin he's in love with himself:lol:

Bob Dylan - It's Alright Ma (I'm Only Bleeding)

2bjqYPH7rAo

Darkness at the break of noon
Shadows even the silver spoon
The handmade blade, the child's balloon
Eclipses both the sun and moon
To understand you know too soon
There is no sense in trying.

Pointed threats, they bluff with scorn
Suicide remarks are torn
From the fool's gold mouthpiece
The hollow horn plays wasted words
Proves to warn
That he not busy being born
Is busy dying.

Temptation's page flies out the door
You follow, find yourself at war
Watch waterfalls of pity roar
You feel to moan but unlike before
You discover
That you'd just be
One more person crying.

So don't fear if you hear
A foreign sound to your ear
It's alright, Ma, I'm only sighing.

As some warn victory, some downfall
Private reasons great or small
Can be seen in the eyes of those that call
To make all that should be killed to crawl
While others say don't hate nothing at all
Except hatred.

Disillusioned words like bullets bark
As human gods aim for their mark
Made everything from toy guns that spark
To flesh-colored Christs that glow in the dark
It's easy to see without looking too far
That not much
Is really sacred.

While preachers preach of evil fates
Teachers teach that knowledge waits
Can lead to hundred-dollar plates
Goodness hides behind its gates
But even the president of the United States
Sometimes must have
To stand naked.

An' though the rules of the road have been lodged
It's only people's games that you got to dodge
And it's alright, Ma, I can make it.

Advertising signs that con you
Into thinking you're the one
That can do what's never been done
That can win what's never been won
Meantime life outside goes on
All around you.

You lose yourself, you reappear
You suddenly find you got nothing to fear
Alone you stand with nobody near
When a trembling distant voice, unclear
Startles your sleeping ears to hear
That somebody thinks
They really found you.

A question in your nerves is lit
Yet you know there is no answer fit to satisfy
Insure you not to quit
To keep it in your mind and not fergit
That it is not he or she or them or it
That you belong to.

Although the masters make the rules
For the wise men and the fools
I got nothing, Ma, to live up to.

For them that must obey authority
That they do not respect in any degree
Who despise their jobs, their destinies
Speak jealously of them that are free
Cultivate their flowers to be
Nothing more than something
They invest in.

While some on principles baptized
To strict party platform ties
Social clubs in drag disguise
Outsiders they can freely criticize
Tell nothing except who to idolize
And then say God bless him.

While one who sings with his tongue on fire
Gargles in the rat race choir
Bent out of shape from society's pliers
Cares not to come up any higher
But rather get you down in the hole
That he's in.

But I mean no harm nor put fault
On anyone that lives in a vault
But it's alright, Ma, if I can't please him.

Old lady judges watch people in pairs
Limited in sex, they dare
To push fake morals, insult and stare
While money doesn't talk, it swears
Obscenity, who really cares
Propaganda, all is phony.

While them that defend what they cannot see
With a killer's pride, security
It blows the minds most bitterly
For them that think death's honesty
Won't fall upon them naturally
Life sometimes
Must get lonely.

My eyes collide head-on with stuffed graveyards
False gods, I scuff
At pettiness which plays so rough
Walk upside-down inside handcuffs
Kick my legs to crash it off
Say okay, I have had enough
What else can you show me?

And if my thought-dreams could be seen
They'd probably put my head in a guillotine
But it's alright, Ma, it's life, and life only.

Anyone old enough to recall 80s Liverpool band Change To The East? It was my cuz's band. We're currently working on some of their recently unearthed videos. If all goes well, I'll upload them next week.
Check 'em out and read about them here:
http://www.myspace.com/changetotheeast

The "Sound Of Liverpool" in 1986, an extremely eclectic band, Change To The East sounded like nobody else. Fast, jangly guitars with a tight melodic rock base.

Fast. Very fast. The sound of Liverpool, England 25 years after the Beatles.

The members consisted of Stuart (Woody) on Guitar, Mark (Vudu8) on Lead Vocals, Paul Benson - RIP, on Drums and Ian Baker on Bass. They never really had the chance to move forward, the band dissolved after recording their 4 song EP. Mark went back to University. Stuart got into lighting and worked with the Real People and eventually did lighting for Cream, the top club in Europe.

It's a shame. They really could have become something special. This EP languished on the shelf for 15 years before being re-released. If only because it deserves to be heard and Change To The East should have its rightful spot in the History of the Merseybeat.

i've been listening to my first 5 or 6 'youtubes ' on this thread for around 20 years now and i love it, i know its an acquired taste but there you go!.The opera post Madam Butterfly by Puccini is actually the only opera cd that i own, and i think its superb, i dont know if youve heard of an Italian film director called Dario Argento ,he does mostly 'giallo's' italian whodunnit/slasher type horror films and he includes a lot of classic opera in his soundtracks, and thats how i became interested in the cd,its really soothing but you've got to be in the mood

Have you seen 'Suspiria'???

Great! More songs.

This one is by a boy-band and I'd (honestly) never heard of them before. They are called A1, I don't know if they are still going or not. I heard this song when it was used at the end of an episode of Three Pints of Lager (on BBC3) a couple of years back, and I taped it and kept playing it. I don't know if it was a hit or is well known from mainstream pop radio, maybe it is.

I honestly think it's a very very good song, and I wish a country singer like Faith Hill would cover it. It's got country written all over, rather than pop, in my opinion.

 Aye Ged. Poor Dave forgot his camera in the Beehive a few years back (possibly with Sebo), promptly shat himself when he realised it wasn't where he had been sat, and luckily it was handed in at the bar. Not long after, we left the Jube in Litherland, and his camera was around his back. I said 'Where's your camera, Dave?' Not seeing it on his immediate person, Dave soiled his pants yet again, before realising his error. Really did think he was going to punch my teeth through the back of my head. :)

Once, when I was much younger, I used to have to work next to a character with a beard who annoyed me.

I would sing a version of the chorus of this song at him with the main refrain replaced with "Beardie, beardie, beardie, beardie, beardie, beardie, beardie, weirdie man!".

I would then poke him with one of the metre-long rulers with which we had been issued.

I don't think he liked it. :ohno:

I had forgotten about this song until I heard it being played on the soundtrack of the Zodiac Killer(?). It opened up an entirely different meaning for me away from Donovan's 'guru' serenade into something much darker and threatening.
