Situado en el altiplano de Bolivia, el Salar de Uyuni no solo es el mayor desierto de sal del mundo sino que constituye un gigantesco espejo natural. Durante la estación húmeda, las lluvias dejan una finísima capa de agua sobre la llanura, lo que provoca uno de los espectáculos naturales más hermosos de la Tierra.

La superficie de este desierto se extiende a lo largo de 12.000 kilómetros cuadrados, un área equivalente a la provincia de Guadalajara, y alberga alrededor de 64.000 millones de toneladas de sal. La incidencia de la luz sobre la superficie mojada provoca la sensación de estar caminando sobre el cielo.

Con el tiempo, este lugar se ha convertido en uno de los principales destinos turísticos de Bolivia, visitado, según la Wikipedia, por 60.000 turistas al año. La mayoría de la gente que ha estado allí coincide en señalar que en ocasiones resulta imposible distinguir dónde acaba la tierra y dónde empieza el horizonte.

La capacidad de este desierto para reflejar la luz es tal que los satélites lo utilizan para calibrar sus instrumentos de medición. La sal refleja la luz hacia el espacio y las condiciones de la atmósfera ofrecen la posibilidad de obtener mediciones cinco veces más precisas que las que se realizan sobre el océano.

La inmensa llanura es el resultado de la retirada del gran mar que llenaba todo el altiplano hace millones de años. El mar se retiró y dejó al descubierto lo que hoy son el Lago Titicaca, el Lago Poopó, y los Salares de Coipasa y de Uyuni.

Cada año, los trabajadores de las salinas extraen unas 25.000 toneladas de sal del Salar de Uyuni. Apenas un arañazo en la superficie: los expertos estiman que la capa de sal tiene unos 120 metros de grosor.

Además, este desierto constituye en una de las mayores reservas de litio y cuenta con importantes cantidades de potasio, boro y magnesio. Más de 40 empresas mineras explotan a diario los recursos del salar de Uyuni, según un informe del Servicio Nacional Técnico de Minas.

Algunos datos de interés sobre el Salar de Uyuni


El salar de Uyuni se halla entre los Departamentos de Potosí y Oruro de Bolivia.

El Salar de Uyuni abarca 12.000 km², es el mayor desierto de sal del mundo.

Es la planicie geométrica más perfecta del mundo situada a 3.650 metros de altura.

En el alba y el ocaso puedes deleitarte de colores fantásticos y apreciar la curvatura de la Tierra!.

Hacen 40.000 años era un mar interior, de lo que queda hoy como vestigios: El Salar de Coipasa y los lagos Poopó y Uru Uru.

La salmuera presente en el Salar se compone de Litio, Boro, Potasio, Magnesio, Carbonatos (bórax), Sulfatos de Sodio y Ulexita.

Es una de las mayores reservas de Litio en el mundo.

Se estima que contiene cerca de 100 mil millones de toneladas de sal (se extraen actualmente 25 mil toneladas año!).

Es una reserva de fauna, en especial de flamencos de altura (Phoenicopterus andinus, Phoenicopterus chilensis, Phoenicopterus jamesi).

Es el habitat natural de cactus gigantes de más de 10 m de altura (Isla Pescado y alrededores).

Se hallan Momias de 3.000 años de antigüedad que se descubrieron recientemente en una caverna al borde del salar.

Se puede apreciar en las montañas circundantes un horizonte de deposición marina a una altura de 100 m sobre el nivel del Salar .

Restos fósiles marinos se encuentran a cada paso en los alrededores del Salar.

Puedes conducir un vehículo a más de 200 kmxhora! sin coger el volante.

Se recomienda visitar el Salar de Uyuni siempre acompañados de guías experimentados.

Often times during the Rainy Season ( Jan-Feb-March) the Salar is flooded with a couple centimeters of water .
Causing the entire desert to turn into a mirror of 5.000 square miles.

ACTUALMENTE, TODOS LOS SATELITES, CONSTANTEMENTE DEBEN SER RECALIBRADOS SUS ORBITAS TERRESTRES.
LA MANERA MAS FACIL Y EFICAZ, ES A TRAVEZ DEL SALAR DE UYUNI, QUE RESULTARON MAS EFICIENTE QUE LOS OCEANOS.

Debido a su gran tamaño, el alto porcentaje de superficie lisa y la alta reflectividad;
cuando la cubierta de agua que lo cubre durante una época del año baja, la superficie del Salar de Uyuni
trabaja hasta cinco veces mejor para la calibración de satélites que la utilización de la superficie del océano.
En septiembre de 2002 un equipo tomó las medidas de elevación con el Sistema de Posicionamiento Global (GPS)
detallados de una parte de los pisos de sal, los cuales fueron usados para evaluar la exactitud y la precisión
de los instrumentos del ICESat.

Muy interesante !!! Lo de la calibracion de los satelites lo habia escuchado una vez pero nunca que Armstrong estuvo en el salar nunca antes. Interesante.

Hermosoo el salar!! tuve la suerte de ir a visitarlo y dormir en el hotel de sal xd jajaj genial experiencia. Y a pesar de haber ido por enero - febrero esperaba encontrarlo todo inundado pero justo por esos dias no llovio y estaba seco :( aunque igual bellisimo en todo sentido!

ahora sobre eso de la calibracion de los satelites, hay un video en youtube donde se muestra el procedimiento de como el salar ayuda a calibrarlos
