Erm, beauty of that mosque is debatable, to me it looks like cold concrete giant and I highly doubt Iraq will have tourists in next decade or so. And when people are starving a mosque is the last thing needed...

3. You complain about the MOSQUE but not the ridiculous "victory sword" of Saddam's war crime?
That's your opinion and its subjective. To me and many, many others it is ugly and distasteful. And I never said I was more advanced, where'd you get that from? Because I'm American I must think others are inferior right? But hey you're right about me not noticing the Sadaam victory sword. But that mosque is so huge so how could I not say something. And something tells me that an ugly mosque is not going to bring coachloads of tourists.
Anyway there are other beautiful parts of Baghdad and that's what's most important.

1. It is beautiful, not ugly.
2. Mosque brings tourism, which brings money. And you are supposed to be more advanced but don't know this?
3. You complain about the MOSQUE but not the ridiculous "victory sword" of Saddam's war crime?
1. I never saw the Rahaman Mosque since it was not built when I left Iraq, I also can't see the photos so I cant judge about whether it's beautiful or ugly.
2. a. If Saddam did one good thing, it would be banning tourism. Tourism is profitable for France, not Iraq. b. The purpose of a mosque is not to look at it's architecture - this point is incorrect.
3. Acutally, I like the swards, they seem nice to me. Plus, a war can not be considered a 'crime' or else every single country should be incriminated - including Iran.
However, I do support the mosque (which was built by Saddam, by the way) for several other reasons; first, people in Iraq actually do go to mosques, so it would be useful; second, the reason it was built was to totally eradicate the horse race track that was built by the British there - good job! although belated; third, a mosque can be much more than just a place to pray, I was told it had a lot of facilities and a big library too.

I have been in Baghdad during the war 2003; unfortunately I didn’t have time to see the city it was heavy bombardment during the first days of the war, and it was a huge storm as well all Baghdad sky was red dust, a German from grpop peace told me that this is god’s anger, then its rained, and u can believe it everything get dusty and muddy, the closes the faces.. But that wasn’t a big issue, the problem is nobody knows when a bomb or a missile hit him, we were bombarded in Palestine hotel, most of the foreigners were not allowed to book in any other hotel except Almansour hotel near the information Minster were u can see the famous Alshaf, or palatine hotel. Almansour was partly destroyed, when 3 missiles hit the neighbouring Iraqi TV, it was 4 ock morning and I was there, they burned all the area the Americans were angry coz the Iraqis shoot down some planes and showed the captured pilots on TV. It was a hell, arms tanks were thrown everywhere and u can take what ever u want, and of course the bombs falling from the sky like a rain.

Like the Citadel in Cairo or the Old City in Damascus? It looks all pretty modern to me, and Baghdad was one of the centers of the Islamic/Arab wolrd!
The Mongol barbarian hordes destroyed everything. There are a few scattered monuments.

That's true, Very little survived from Old Baghdad. We can only imagine the old city from descriptions in old books and poems. photos from early 1900s show some old mosques that were destroyed during the past 100 year as well.

The gigant mosque will sure bring many tourists, especialy muslims because it will be the biggest muslim object in the world. And i dont belive they will leave it this "naked", so you cant say it is "ugly", when it is not finished yet, there is no facade.
Are there any rendering of that project, to se interior and exterior ?
Something similar happend to my city, Belgrade. The construction of St Sava`s temple started in 1935, but after many wars we are near completing it. Many tourists are coming, because it is one of the bigest christian orthodox church. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Temple_of_Saint_Sava

Does Baghdad have any traditional MIddle Eastern architecture?

the Mongols whipped out almost everything ( Read : Siege of Baghdad (1258) (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_Baghdad_%281258%29) ) ,
but here's one example that survived the Mongol destruction :
Al Mustansiriyah University , established in 1233 by the Abbasid Caliph Al-Mustansir :

look at the level of details and perfection in building this school , it's just Amazing ! . I can Imagine now how would the old Baghdad look like if it had survived the Mongol destruction !
