I've rated our smart and modern city centre much higher, you have to see the real thing to do it any justice. Many of the gems are not visible in those views.

Leeds might not have the best skyline, but at street level it's very impressive and varied. Buildings like princess exchange, no.1 city sqaure, and no.16 park row (the glass fronted one) are stunning examples of modern architecture that blend in well with the older designs.

I gave the skyline 6 as there are no true skyscapers yet to create much of a skyline.

I do agree that the best views are from street level. I love the glass fronted building on Park Row nestled inbetween gothic carved stone buildings.

You said it.

Things have come a long way in Leeds and there is plenty happening at the moment that will densify the skyline at a lower level. We need taller towers however to bring any dramatic improvemnt to the skyline which is in all honesty pretty poor at the moment. Roll on the 25 storey Clarence Dock tower, the 26 storey Unite tower and if it ever happens, Bridgewater Place.

Incidentally I think the best place to view the skyline is as you come into the city on the M1 on the sweeping bend past the Hunslet turnoff.

The best skyline of Leeds is aproaching the city from the south.. it is better for real than in a photo...

http://home.1asphost.com/janstubbs/homeskyline.JPG
From the North.

I think I love Leeds but like so many of the Cities in the UK the skyline is not their main boast as this
has not been a priority of the past decades... but also as Leeds, like so many cities, is set in a valley
any tall heart of the city developments will remain a little secluded by the smaller buildings set
higher up the hill. I hope that maybe in another 10 years or so the city will look better from a
distance, but at the moment it is a city that is beter from street level. ..

...but from a UK perspective the score would be much higher.

Those pictures don't really do the City any justice. There are some quite tall buildings but they look tiny in that shot. Leeds is much more impressive in person. A lot of buildings are being developed so I think Leeds has a lot more to offer. I give it a 8/10 because it is a very pretty city and has a lot of hidden treasures and more is to come!!

Better than I expected after seeing other UK skylines, has some tallish buildings and (good pics Rob!) some beautiful new stuff too. At the moment, the taller buildings don't really gel together well, probably due to planning issues, and not a lot of height. Unfortunately being set in a valley never helps, so extra .5 points added.

I never seen Leeds before. Its more impressive than I imagine.
It has about the same population as my hometown of Indianapolis. I appreciate Leeds' skyline, it looks modest, spread out and spaced evenly and not too tall (a city doesn't have to have a tall skyline to impress me)
It reminds me of the modest skyline of San Jose, California for example, a city with simular population.

Always like approaching the city by train as you can see so much of it and so many different types of buildings.

I think your predicament started by posting such ordinary photos. They really didn't do the city justice.

If it wasn't for the great photos posted by Rob, I would have scored it a 4 with a comment like " shit or bland " but it looks like you've got some wonderful buildings with some great ones to come....

I love Leeds, and yes, from a distance it does not look as impressive as when you are in the city center at street level. Most of the CBD is already built up with beautiful victorian markets and shopping arcades. The twin towers proposal looks exciting. I am glad they are using glass as the primary building material, it will lighten the very heavy looking skyline a bit.
I cn't wait to visit Leeds agian...

Actually one of the greatest skylines in the world is a quaint village called Arundel which is located half way between Brighton in the south and London in the north - if your approaching from the Portsmouth/Southampton area along the coast and up into London on the Brighton line you get an awesome skyline. Yes there is only a cathedral and a castle - but the views beat many world skylines - hell I prefer the likes of Lincoln and York to many modern day skylines. Oxford is well up there as well :)

Personally I see great potential in Leeds, whilst I don't see it being one of the forerunners of the UK Skyscraper race that's going, it certainly has and could pull more superbly designed towers out of the bag. Hopefully Criterion place will soon start to grow into the sky.. you seem (from what I recall) to have most of these tall towers planned closeby to each other meaning in terms of clusters and density you could rival maybe even Birmingham with a few towers..

I've never been to Leeds but it does seem to have a great city-feel.. from a distant perspective I can't say I was as impressed with the skyline as I've been on Manchester or Leeds.. however I blame this on the geographical settings and where the motorway is, lol.. As it made you kinda look down at Leeds making it look small, whereas Manchester you drive around it giving it this big feel.. (and Birmingham just seem follows you as you drive passed for ages!)..

So for now I give 7/10.. But great things are sure to happen before the end of this decade :)

I gave Leeds a good vote. Mainly because today as i drove into Leeds i could hardly recognise it. Also the best view for the skyline in from Beeston (shithole yes) as it actually looks like a decent cluster from their. If i could i would post some pictures and im sure it would raise the rate up by atleast 2.

I'm sure this is a beautiful city, and it's inhabitants very friendly, and if I were to rate the city based on its classical architecture and streetscape and so on, I'd probably give it a much bigger rating. But since this poll and website specifically focuses on skyscrapers, I really can't see any 'real' skyscrapers there. So 2/10 for me. Sorry.

Well, Leeds certainly is coming along nicely in terms of high-rise development at the moment. With the approval of Lumiere, we shall soon have one of the tallest buildings in the country, outside of London, of course, which will be a great catalyst for other high-rise developments.

However, as this is based on current buidlings, I shall post a few pics I took, and a few that I found, to hopefully bump up people's opinions of our city. Click on the thumbnails for larger images.

7/10 but watch this change upwards within the next couple of years.

Because the Council in Leeds is pro- highrise buildings, 2007 is going to be a milestone in its history for the construction of skyscrapers.

Lumiere Tower 1 at 171m starts construction in 3 months, and will be the tallest building outside London and the tallest resedential building in Western Europe. Tower 2 will be 112m, still a skyscraper based on UK standards.

The Plaza at 100m starts construction shortly and Opel Tower has started construction at 82m.

When Criterion Place kicks off, hopefully next year, these will be a 160m and 105m towers.

Leeds isa leading the revolution for high rise building in the UK....just watch this space!

And you should know been from the likes of Sheffield. its not crap for UKsandards, its good for UK standards, its not up there on the worlds skylines)but it does do a good job of keeping up with the other UK skylines outside London, For example Birmingham,Manchester,Liverpool and Leeds are the best skylines in England. But they look turd at the side of the world skylines of Asia and america. But thanks for your opinion (sheff boy) ;)

Wow Leeds Troll... You don't have much eye. You dare speak of New York skyline in the lowest terms, but give Leeds a 10/10?

We're talking about skylines dude, not about how much you like a city. I've heard that Leeds is a beatuful city but skyline wise, it is way behind.

I consider myself objective, I love my birth city; however, skyline wise I gate it a 7/10, I gave Leeds 3/10 cuz there's no skyline... at all.

You are one very narrow minded person do you know that. skylines are not about how many structures are on a skyline, it's what they are and how there placed what counts, just because New York has 50 times more skyscrapers than London doesnt necessarily mean it has the better skyline, depending on peoples taste it varies. and isn't it my choice what i vote for on this forum? :ohno: silly american cunt

Cheers for rating, i think Leeds needs some Tall glass towers to brake up the skyline.

We had plans for the Lumiere towers and criterion towers, which would of made a massive difference to the skyline of Leeds, but because of the dam recession these things were cancelled

The main Lumiere tower would of been 55 storeys high,
and the main Criterion tower would of been 53 storeys high
and the other two would of been 30+ storeys high,
Big loss i think.

RaySthlm
January 6th, 2011, 09:40 AM
haha common, do you like this skyline yourself? I shall tell you the same, what a great taste you have, you probably gave Leeds a 10, am I right? Bangkoks skyline with 1000-2000 highrises, modern glass skyscrapers sprawling all over the city, or Leeds, 4 concrete highrises. I dont want to be rude, but it looks kinda depressing, sorry. By the way, I am from Stockholm, not Bangkok, but prefer Bangkoks skyline over Stockholm as well, a lot more by that matter. Everyone knows that asia and USA are king of skylines and skyscrapers, europe is king of lowrises.

haha common, do you like this skyline yourself?

 Yes i can now see where you're coming from :shifty:

Where is the glass, all i can see is glorified residential concrete blocks, with box windows? no offence here but that is one ugly concrete sprawl, very dated and very unfriendly.

yupp you are correct my friend, Bangkok is filled with super luxury apartments/condos and glassy office buildings compare to Leeds, 3 or 4 20 storey concrete apartments and the rest is lowrise poor looking buildings that belongs to some Russian province.

So what score did you give Leeds? Seriously, don't tell me you rated it higher than 3,5.

Luxury? mate we built blocks like that in the 1960's we called them council flats, all bangkok skyline has is just some glorified 1960's style concrete tower blocks, hardly anything which is a wow factor never mind nice to look at, if your idea of a skyline is how many slabs you can see sticking in the sky fair enough, but not everyone likes over crowded skylines, which in a lot of cases is very poorly planned, resulting in cheap and nasty concrete shit houses everywhere!

How stupid can a thread get? Leeds is a decent city with a good centre and some nice modern low-mid rise developments and some good 19th century Victorian buildings. In terms of skyline photogenic appeal it doesn't have much and it certainly doesn't beat Bangkok.

But the name 'Leeds Troll' kinda gives it away, he would probably argue that Leeds has better Buddhist temples than Bangkok and the SE Asian royal palaces of Leeds beat Bangkok's Grand Palace hands down.

Leeds Met University tower voted 'world's best'

http://news.bbcimg.co.uk/media/images/49620000/jpg/_49620803_broadcastingplace.jpg

The architects said the building had provoked a strong reaction A rusty-looking tower block in Leeds has been voted the best tall building in the world.

Broadcasting Place houses Leeds Metropolitan University's Faculty of Arts, Environment and Technology.

The building is made from weathering steel, which forms a rust-like appearance when exposed to weather.

It beat off Dubai's Burj Khalifa, the world's tallest building, at a ceremony organised by the Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat (CTBUH).

Broadcasting Place, on Woodhouse Lane, was shortlisted for the award after being voted Europe's best tall building by the CTBUH in June.

The building, which also contains student flats, was praised for its unusual angular shapes and for showing "a respect for the scale and grain of the surrounding listed buildings".

'David and Goliath'

Julian Gitsham, from architects Feilden Clegg Bradley Studios, said: "We are delighted, we're a bit stunned really.

"We were very pleased with the Europe award and then we thought 'well we're going to be up against the Burj, the tallest building in the world'.

The Bank of America Tower, the Pinnacle @ Duxton and the Burj Khalifa were also shortlisted "It felt like a David and Goliath situation where we had this relatively small building next to this 1km-high building."

Mr Gitsham said Broadcasting Place was "a humble building" and much smaller than the Burj Khalifa, but it was very "economical" and "environmental" and had a "huge impact" on Leeds and the university.

The university said the building, owned by student accommodation developer Downing, had been given both praise and criticism for its use of weathering steel as a cladding material.

Mr Gitsham said: "We always wanted to take a really bold decision. We think it's fantastic when it gets a strong reaction.

"We love the material. It lasts well, it weathers well, it's got a beautiful tactile nature to it.

All that will age terribly, you have one or two standard buildings you could find anywhere, with the rest of the majority concrete shit houses, which were built anywhere in the 1960's

Benidorm for example built that type of stuff during the 1960's, and look at the state of the quality of this skyline...

I've been there, I been to almost whole europe, and I was born and still live in Stockholm/Sweden (studied in Bangkok for 3 years and fell in love with that city). Swedish architecture is more nice than British even if they are similar. British architecture (especially places outside London) looks pretty dull and depressing for some reason. We people in Sweden always joke when we see an ugly, depressing building, that it belongs to England.

Anyway, Bangkok skyscrapers are not tacky at all, they are really modern and the facilities are amazing. swimming pool on your own balcony in a tall condo, that is what I call nice ;). New skyscraper projects in Bangkok looks a lot better ofcourse. So in the near future Bangkok will go from 9 out of 10 to a perfect 10 perhaps. If you talk about classy design/lowrise buildings, Britain wins without a doubt. but skyline wise and skyscrapers, they are 50 years behind.

I find you very funny because you have no idea of what you're spouting, and it's funny how you say Britain is 50 years behind at building skyscrapers, but yet it's your country which is putting up concrete 1960's style tower blocks, calling them condo's? and another thing, so you agree that we win hands down with classy lowrise buildings? so does that leave you 500 years behind Britain in terms of great quality and design in street scapes? a good skyline is not all about how many slabs you can see sticking in the sky, only a moron like yourself measures skylines in that absurd way, for me and most people with comon sense, it's about quality over quantity.

What I mean by lowrise, is that whole europe has great design in lowrise buildings, because of the classy/nice european design. Whole europe outclasses USA and Asia in that field, but when european cities start to build skyscrapers, they just look horrible and so outdated compare to asia and USA. Just look at Leeds tallest, that is what I call a cheap, tacky attempt to build a highrise, putting some LED lights on it doesn't help, sorry.

Do you honestly think that is modern? and that it has some architectural merit? because quite frankly it's horrendous, the only thing it has going for it is the height, but if you shrunk that down to the height of say Leeds Tallest Building, i think you would find that it has absolutely no architectural merit what so ever.

I know which one i prefer taller or not.

OMG!!
here we go again, i've just proven that Bangkok builds ugly concrete monsters in the YEAR 2011

For example Bangkoks tallest Building

Bangkok has over 2000 skyscrapers, Leeds best looks like a normal highrise in Bangkok

Here is another cool looking building in Bangkok which was build in the mid 90's, in the background are some commercial skyscrapers completed last year.

I know what I prefer ;), oohh and by the way, Bangkoks tallest building was not completed 2011. It was completed 1997 if am not misstaken.

No, it is not, but it is a lot because of your Leeds friend does not agree with me that an asian skyscrapercity with over 2000 skyscrapers doesn't beat a town like Leeds with 4, 20 storey apartments with low quality.

I didn't start this whole thing, just go back and look at the messages.

Tbh both Leeds and Bangkok look quite nasty when it comes to high-rises. Plenty of great Victorian stuff in Leeds though.

:weirdo: :ohno:

Just read the 2 comments, this spaceboy (RaySthlm) wrote about the Cracow banner. You will realize what kind of person you are dealing with (i'm sure some of you already did). He's probably living in he's own (sick) skyscraper world, somewhere very very high:nuts: in the sky, between clouds. :weird::nuts:
He trolls everywhere, he thinks that on the banner section people are rating the height and the number of skyscrapers, in stead of the quality of the banner. Also, he starts posting tons of Bangkok photos on a Leeds-UK thread.:weird:
I'm surprised he didn't get banned for all the rubbish he has been spreading all over this forum...but i ques it's just a matter of time.
Don't even mind this weirdo.

Sorry for the off-topic. Please continue with this thread...Leeds is a beautiful city with some excellent and high-class (old/new) architecture.:okay:

Giving Cracow 5 out of 5 is also a very odd thing to do, don't you think? Cracow has the best skyline in the world, togheter with NYC, Shanghai etc. My god, grow up, and why don't you msg me in private? You have to post your drunk crap on a Leeds thread. Me and Leeds troll stopped already. :weirdo:

The banner section is not a "race to the space-skyline-skyscraper -World Championship- competition":bash: It's not top100 skyscrapers!:bash:
Anyway....i'm not explaining this to you anymore. It seems you have the IQ-level equal to a bowl of cereals.
P.S. I didn't write you a private message, because i wanted the people from this thread, to see what a wiseguy you are. You have been spreading your nonsense on this thread enough. [/OFFTOPIC]
