Less than you think, I was not alone (with Brisavoine and Metropolitan) and I was inside a car.
I was stuck in a traffic jams due at the tramway work (The T5 Saint Denis - Garges Sarcelles will run here), so I took some pictures.

This district is far more than an housing complex, it include office buildings many independant shops and a shopping centers.
The streets were busy, clean and well maintained (if we exclude the tram work) it doesn't look as dangerous as we often heard.

I will surely take other picture in Sarcelles in the next weeks.

I was actually wondering if you were inside a car, for once. You looked way to close to the traffic jam to be by foot yet I wondered how your perspective could be higher than the rest of the cars. Is Brisavoine or Metropolitan a truck/lory driver?

In places like Berlin or Madrid or Eastern Europe where big, huge commie-block complexes exist, one does not think something necessarily bad about a big place like Garges-Sarcelles. But in Paris, where many people live in single-family and semi-detached houses in the suburbs, one thinks negatively of a place like Garges-Sarcelles, and yet, they are many clusters like that throughout Greater Paris. Perhaps there is way worse than Garges-Sarcelles. By what you say, it does not seem as bad as the size suggests. Sometimes it's the smaller housing projects that are worse, anyway.

I lived in Garges for a short while, nothing bad ever happened to me. It's more of a boring place than a dangerous one in my opinion. The only interesting thing I found to do in the area was to cross the RER tracks to Sarcelles as they have quite a large and varied market there.

Wow, this looks like your average street in Belgium, which is weird since Bagneux is south of Paris, and less likely to have northern France/Belgian influence.

Nice updates, and even some pics of the outer suburbs !

Wow, this looks like your average street in Belgium, which is weird since Bagneux is south of Paris, and less likely to have northern France/Belgian influence.
Northern suburbs don't have more northern France/belgian influence than their southern counterparts. The boundary is between 50/100 km north of Paris. Towns like Creil, still in Paris commuter belt, feel more or less "northern". The first fully northern city architecture-wise would be Amiens, virtually a sea of brick rowhouses.

^^ And Lille, especially suburbs of Lille, can look a lot like Belgium cities, including the Flemish ones. But than again, Lille-Metropole touches the Belgium border, and was once part of French Flanders.

Yes, I agree...Amiens is perhaps the first fully "northern" city architecture-wise, well before reaching Lille and other cities of the Nord-Pas-de-Calais region.

In the Paris suburbs with single-family houses, I get the impression there is a lot of Breton-style houses, or an attempt at that style. Next to the Meulière-stone houses of Greater Paris, breton-look-alikes are quite common. Luckily, Mediterranean/Southern France-style houses are not common in Greater Paris. That would look so out-of-place if that was the case.

It is true that the affluent western Paris has more immigrants than people believe.

I agree...But, but, but :
Infact there is an higher ratio of immigrants in the 16th arrondissement than in the 13th arrondissement (know for hosting the largest chinatown in Europe) or Argenteuil (very famous in the news but not for positive reason).

Data (housemaids excluded :D) please...!??! :dunno:

More seriously, It depends on who you call "immigrant", because you also have to keep in mind, for example, the 130+ diplomatic representations located in the XVIe Arr. !

Anyway........Tout ceci (entre autres), peut aussi expliquer cela !!

Your previous post, #765, Drancy vs. Nogent-sur-Marne, is a good example of a low-income and a high-income locality of Greater Paris.

Firstly, Paris is Paris, not Montreuil, Nanterre, Boulogne, Maison Alfort or La défense. The latter are suburbs.

Besides, people in this forum must not be mistaken. Paris is beautiful and enthousiastic, even with the current rainy wheather.

IMO, I don't think posting the picture "Boulevard de Stalingrad (Choisy le Roi/Thiais)" taken after a rain in the beginnig of the evening has a interest. Over gloomy and pointless...almost makes me cry! :ohno:

Martounet, there are plenty of images of Paris in this forum of picture-perfect Parisian corners, iconic sites, and the Paris that tourists want to see. This is one of the few threads of the Paris that works, the Paris you see on any given day. This is the real Paris, not the Paris you search for that makes a perfect picture. Also, Minatu ku shows the Paris where most people in Paris on any given day live, which is just outside the City of Paris, in a developed area 8x or more the area of the City of Paris that simply makes up Greater Paris.

I respect the philosophy of the thread, but i just wanted to precise some points. Of course i love rainy days too, but i don't see the interest of posting pictures like "Boulevard de Stalingrad (Choisy le Roi/Thiais)"... even under the sun it's pointless (IMO).

"Paris, my city" is false. Greater Paris doesn't exist. "Paris and its suburbs" would be more precise.

In the thread "unknown Paris", I post exclusively pictures of Paris... I think it's more honest for foreign forumers...

Minato ku

No it is the oposite, the lie is to convince the people that Paris stops at the Peripherique.
The reality is not always what is official.

Pointless area are also a part of the city.
Note that this pointless area is useful for tens of thousand people everyday. ;)

Well, I very much love your thread. When I want to see less known or less-photographed spots of Paris, I go to your thread. You capture very well the concept of less-known together with a detail to a facade or a dimension or a style.

However, this thread achieves something different. It is unpretentious, un-artsy Paris. The Paris of immigrants, the working-class, the Boulevard de Stalingrad in Choisy-le-Roi/Thias that brings me back memories when I would take the RER C to spend a weekend with a friend in Choisy-le-Roi because I was young and had no money to spend in Paris and prefered to drive around with my friend in the suburbs who had a car. And, we would go to McDonalds drive-thru because it was cheap, like on that picture you talk about that is without purpose. So this thread shows that beyond the City of Paris there is an extension of Paris that looks a lot more like most places in America, one that says [Greater]Paris has both of Old Europe and New World development styles and trends.

Greater Paris does exist. In (American) English, the tern Greater [city] is used to refer to an urban area that includes surrounding cities, like Greater Houston or Greater Los Angeles. In French, one says in every-day talk Region Parisienne or RP when written, much more than Paris + Banlieue, which would only be seen written, never spoken. J'habite en Region Parisienne. Immobilier: Paris + banlieue but also simply RP or Region Parisienne Meanwhile, in English, one would never say Houston Region or LA Region, but again, one would say Greater Houston or Houston Metro. So Greater Paris is correct in English, at least American English, not sure about British English, because Greater London means something else--it's a well defined area with boundaries, and maybe that is how you understand it to be, which I respect.

But I agree that an intro to this thread would have helped in clarify what the author intended, as to not confuse.

well well, I guess I'm a bourgeois and I don't want to see those parts of Paris showed in this thread... but show me "Boulevard de Stalingrad (Choisy le Roi/Thiais)" in Houston or in Tokyo, I just want to cry too... http://smileys.sur-la-toile.com/repository/Triste/0055.gif http://smileys.sur-la-toile.com/repository/Rires/0003.gif

I used to live in Nanterre and Boulogne and I would never post any picture of it... I guess it's a question of what we think is beautiful or not... the question is: does everything need to be showed? IMO, that is not because thousands of people live outside Paris (I mean in suburbs) that their boroughs must be showed in so far as the latter are ugly or pointless... everything can't be beautiful.

but what I find pointless is important for other guys like Edubejar or Minato, so I respect that, even if I can hardly understand. http://smileys.sur-la-toile.com/repository/Cligne/j_gaba.gif

Thank you Minato for a great thread!

This is one of the few threads I keep coming back to, simply because of the interesting places and the interesting way to capture them.
I have to agree with the other commentators. Picture perfect postcard places was my main focal point when I first started browsing the SSC forums, but as time went, my taste grew and evolved, to the point that I now often find the tourist photos boring.
Minato however, brings the real deal. The Paris I want to re-visit.

Keep it up!

It's amazing all the different parts of the Paris metro-area that the author of this thread gets to in order to show us these pics. Then you combine that with the technology that is the internet and Google Maps with Street View and I can see where the place in the post above i.e. Rue Hispano Suiza (Bois-Colombes) is located. The site is part of a redevelopment cluster of new low-rise buildings.

These are almost as numerous as McDonald's in Central Paris (maybe even more numerous today) and unlike Starbucks, it is all over France.

It is an hotel.
Hotels often have flag of several countries, anyway I don't know why it does have the Spanish flag (many spanish tourists maybe :dunno:).
La Courneuve still has a bad reputation.

Could you tell me something about the place Porte Saint Martin?..between Republique and la gare de l'est. It's a safe place?

Minatu ku, you could not have shown two more different Paris, demographically, than in the post above, 7th vs 18th arrondissements, although 16th vs 18th may have been just as different, too.
