But, anyway this:

Because Moscow's CBD is too megalomanic, why don't build some smaller towers, but more? In my opinion Russia Tower and this red something are one of the ugliest towers in Europe. The rest is ok, but around CBD Moscow need some smaller (50 - 150 m) towers.

FYI Lodz in Poland (second largest city in terms of population) signed an agreement with Polish Aviation Authority regarding construction of skyscrapers in the city center.

Permit was issued for buildings up to 200m. There are currently 15 proposals ranging from 100m to 200m for Lodz.

So Lodz may get a nice skyline soon.

So far Polish skylines are (in no particular order):

1. Warszawa
2. Poznan
3. Lodz
4. Katowice
5. Wroclaw
6. Gdynia/Gdansk

Lol, are poles really saying that a bunch of randomly placed not very impressive towers are better than towers forming a great cluster?

Completely agree with you! Cluster, formed around one dominant structure, and NOT a randomly placed towers, leave a much better impression.

As many towers Warsaw has, i'd say Moscow is ahead already, due to good urban planning.

Read what the people on the forum are writing about clusters ;)

Kiev maybe has more highrises than Sarajevo, but they are widespread and dont form a cluster. And also Kiev is much bigger than Sarajevo. Sarajevo has some 700,000 people while Kiev has 2-3 million. Besides, most of the buildings you have above 20floors are commie blocks, right? ;)

When Russia Tower and the whole planned complex in Moscow get built, I may have to concede that the skyline is #1 in EE....BUT, it's not built (this ranking is for current skylines, right?), and right now it doesn't really appeal to me as a whole (though I see the potential and like the individual buildings). And by the time that complex in Moscow City is built, Warsaw will have several more very tall skyscrapers, and tastes may change. And in reply to JAG, those towers in Warsaw are very modern "boxes", and I happen to like the way they look very much. Architecture, after all, is a very subjective science, no? Opinions matter. I think it's undeniable what the top 3 are, the question of which city goes in what place is mostly a question of taste.

But what's all this bs that there are no clusters in Warsaw? There is a cluster up and growing in Wola (around the Warsaw Trade Tower), and the main cluster in Śródmieście, plus the cluster (could be considered part of main one) with Orco Tower, Elektrim, and LIM, plus other towers 100+ m throughout the city, including Blue Tower, Babka Tower, Intraco, Reform Plaza, etc. Like someone mentioned before, Istanbul and Warsaw are growing more naturally, while Moscow is more planned and rigid. Which version you like better depends upon who you are. Personally, I like the natural growth and look of Warsaw much more than Moscow.

Yes, Kyiv has most of the commies above 20 floor but they form density of the area which Sarajevo lucks at the moment, you have few towers and that's all, rest of the building look like 3-4 floors, and Kyiv has density and they keep building regardless of the crisis:

There were proposals to build a couple of scrapers including 160+ m one at Pankrac plain where the highest towers already stand but this was rejected and constantly there is a fight between UNESCO, other protectionists and developers. As it it seems now, there will be a couple o new towers up to some 80m which would help to create a nice cluster.

Pankrac plain now looks like this:

"Groundscrapers" are much more common in Prague. For instance BB Centrum just one subway stop from Pankrac.

Sounds promising, personally I think there's nothig better than well balanced skyline, a mix of historical "towers" and new ones not essentialy extremely tall. Prague has a lot of potential there. Especially that it looks like new towers will be built near the City heart. Like it!

What exactly is your criticism of quality of e.g. Russia Tower or Federation Tower?

@ Russia Tower - read with understanding, I wrote that in the future there will be some high class towers in Moscow. To be honest, there is one residential tower I consider to be classy, I don't remember its name, it looks like a little bit twisted, has lots of "accidently" arranged windows and skewed columns at ground and first floor level - I really like it, I'm a bit jealous :). BTW could you post some shots of this building here? If you know which one I mean.

@Federation Tower - I do not like It's bad proportions, it is "fat". It has no interesting large scale detail, cladding looks a kind of cheap. This building is just average when such tall buildings cannot be average, must be significant, this one is just boring, there is no "play" and no idea in this tower even formally it is not interesting.

I don't want to compare Warsaw and Moscow, these are two totally different cities, with different population, history, size, etc.
To me in terms of height, density, overall scale Moscow has no competition but when it comes to other aspects Moscow has at least dozen of competitors and is not as perfect as russian forumers force us to think.
To be fair, I think that Warsaw is not as "great" as some of polish forumers say, Now I think it is also average but ongoing and planned buildings make me hopin that one day we will deserve stron good 2nd place in EE.
 for our EE dynamic cities!

Interesting opinion regarding the aesthetics of the towers

I have been to both London and Paris and therefore was able to compare the towers in real life. In London I was only impressed with the Gerkin and the HSBC building, while Paris was not impressive at all. I do not know what mystic "quality" you are talking about since the towers in Moscow look at least as impressive as the ones in London/Paris and are designed by the same top architects!? ;) :dunno:

tomi1975
October 20th, 2008, 02:01 PM
It was criticism, Golov, I've criticised Federation Tower. Were I not precise enough?
Which existing buildings in Moscow are designed by the Foster, Pei, Renzo Piano, Nouvell, Perrault etc.? Don't call average german design office a top architects.

Quality regards detailing, materials, formal solutions ,proportions of buildings, idea (gherkin - good example, you look at this building and you see structure, you see how the natural ventilation works, you see how social aspect looks, shape of the building is unmistakable, you see idea of the design at first sight),way the building relates to the city etc..
Federation Tower is just another tall boring scraper.
I'm regarding only to existing buildings, just to remind you...

Just to make it clear: even if, Istanbul could be consider as part of europe, it most certainly is not in eastern europe. Whoever thinks otherwise, is either blind or completely clueless in geography. Even the political term cannot be applied to it, as it was on the opposite side of iron curtain.

No offense, but Sarajevan towers are some of the worst i have ever seen. What makes them look any good is the mountainous background.

IMHO Warsaw and Moscow skylines are comparable at the moment. Warsaw lucks height, Moscow lucks panoramic views. Both are crucial for skyline reception. One's evaluation depends on his preferences or prejudices. In 2 years or so Moscow should overpass Warsaw for good, if our tallest projects won't reach construction status.

IMO the best skyline in EE is in Warsaw.

Just for a change, I'll repost smth about Nicosia/Cyprus. Obviously it isn't exactly Eastern European but anyway, these terms gradually erode :

There are almost no skylines in our cities in Greece (just some old skyscrapers/highrises built before the height restriction) but interesting things happen in Nicosia/Cyprus. Despite its 200.000 inhabitants the city is developing a mini-skyline:

Some people are accustomed to talk about commieblocks when they discuss skylines.
Just they don't see any buildings that could be higher than commieblocks.
Others are more lucky, they can see real skycrapers in their cities. :)
Those who talk about commieblocks (in the thread about skylines) can be compaired to those who talk about frames while discussing paintings in a museum :) (certainly, everybody expects a good frame for a good painting, but this is not very important)

I also dunno why he is so suprized. In fact I ppl travel to EE to see commieblocks b/c they are symbols of communist era and ppl travel to EE not to see western european development and shopping - they get all that in W Europe. Many tourists travel to EE to see reminants of communism b/c EE was apex of communism. by today's standards yes, but after the war commieblocks were best way to provide ppl with homes especially in Warsaw which was totally destroyed

All I wanted to say is that impressive Moscow's skyline is nothing without its IBC! Moscow is formed mainly of commieblocks and that's why it can't be counted as the best one IMO, especially when we are talking about variety of arcitectural styles in skyline! Sorry if I offended someone...:)

Major Deegan

What's wrong with commieblocks?? Now that you completely dismissed any suggestion of Moscow topping the list of top skylines, may I ask which is the best one in EE according to you? Warsaw is nothing without its own CBD and, apart from its meager historical center, still very much dominated by commieblocks. Riga/Tallinn/Vilnius "clusters" aren't even worth being mentioned here. C'mon, you're just being an ass right now.

Commieblocks are everywhere, even here in Denver. But I have to agree with Triceratops that I don't see Moscow as #1 in EE, I still prefer the Warsaw skyline, it looks more natural to me...ie: develops over time, blends into the city well. I also like rectangular skyscrapers more than those with "organic" or rounded shapes.

That being said, Moscow is a different city than Warsaw, and Moscow City fits the Moscow skyline well. Of course Moscow has more skyscrapers and supertalls and is full of billionaires. But purely from an aesthetic point of view, I prefer Warsaw. :D (waiting for the inevitable 1,273 rebukes by Russian forumers)

golov

This just shows that you guys don't know much about Moscow. Of course the IBC was not built anywhere near the historic center. The industial belt location was chosen to give it more room to grow and also to be able to built some spatious infrastructure to accomodate for the business district's needs

If you want to look at the historic center, go to Kremlin, Red Square, Manezh etc. I prefer that these things do not get mixed

Look at the pic of Warsaw, it is a sea of commieblocks, nothing special at all, right? ;)

Of course ;)

Loser's favourite argument ;)

Ok, if you want me to get technical, I will:

1) Warsaw's skyline is near the historic center, which gives it a nice "built-up" urban feel.

2) The view from the Wisła River, with the old town in the foreground, and the new skyscrapers rising in the back, is just awesome, and looks much better than just the Moscow City area by itself (with no older historic buildings around it).

3) Like I said, I like rectangular skyscrapers more than organic rounded shapes.

^^That is why for me Warsaw beats Moscow skyline (ie: Moscow City). It's not because Moscow looks bad, Warsaw just looks better overall. So get over it. I'm not calling Russians losers because I think our skyline is nicer. You shouldn't either.

What I think is that there's no point arguing about where skyscrapers would look better, the thing is that whether they fit for the city or not!
