I have to admit, I've never been a fan of shopping malls. I don't like such enclosed spaces and for me, there's no better "shopping experience" then strolling along Belgrade's Knez Mihailova street, visiting the many chic stores & outdoor cafes. But now I notice this huge "mall fever" is beginning to shake up the Balkans (we're probably among the last ones to start building these things) so I was wondering, if we were to make a LIST of top20 largest shopping malls in Eastern Europe , how would it look like today?

NOTE: THis is NOT a photo thread, so please don't post massive ammounts of useless pics. If you really have to, limit yourself to just ONE.

I believe Casa Radio was not mentioned.

From www.plazacenters.com:

The Casa Radio development sits on a 9.195 hectare (22.7 acre) site located in central Bucharest, incorporating a large area of the Bucharest city centre. Gara de Nord, the city's main railway station is nearby as well as the adjacent Eroilor Metro Station and a number of trolley bus services which serve the site.

The development of Casa Radio comprises approximately 360,000sqm, including:

A 120,000 sqm shopping mall and leisure centre (one of the largest in Europe)
residential area, hotel, casino, hypermarket, convention and conference hall.
Furthermore, two 135 metre tall towers of 53,000 sqm each, which once completed, will be among the tallest buildings in Bucharest.

Project status: demolition works and initial construction commenced, approaching final concept design.

A new supermall for Moscow - 510 000 m2

http://img.lenta.ru/ireal/news/2008/03/28/aviapark/picture.jpg

Like I said, in the Balkans, the mall-mania has only recently started...

only a few months ago, DeltaCity Belgrade (80-90k sqm) opened, becoming the largest mall in ex-YU region:

http://www.europe-re.com/files/processed/00086500/86554_delta_overdag.jpg

Another one - the so-called "PC USCE" mall - already under construction by MPC Group - it will be about 30-50% larger then DeltaCity.

http://www.x-build.net/4images/data/media/1/060318-rn-usce-01.jpg

And the last known planned mall, "Delta Planet", will start construction either late this or early next year. It will be about twice of the size of USCE mall (~350k sqm)

I've made my little research on Bulgarian malls, so here's what I found out:

The largest mall currently built is the Mall of Sofia:

http://www.balkantopproperties.com/about_bulgaria/Economy/Mall%20of%20Sofia.jpg

Its TBA: 75.000 m2, its GLA is about 30.000m2

The largest malls currently U/C are:

Serdika Center, TBA: 180.000 m2, GLA: 55.000 m2, completion: end of 2009

http://www.ece.de/shared/media/434_project_center.jpg

Carrefour, TBA: 100.000 m2, GLA: 66.000m2

http://www.novinite.com/media/images/2007-11/87185.jpg

And the largest planned (Akropolis have already cleared the plot, but still no construction have started):

Sofiiski Akropolis: TBA (the whole project, incl residential/office parts: 850.000 m2), GLA: 100.000, completion: 2013

http://www.akropolis.lt/images/graphics/1194348412.JPG

Danaos Mall, GLA: 100.000 m2, TBA: unknown, start date unknown, opening date unknown, the plot is already bought, but I cannot find any info

These malls in Sofia , who's building them? I know Carrefour is a French company but what about the rest?

The name "Akropolis" reminds me Lithuania's VP Market.

bgrs
April 1st, 2008, 07:27 PM
Carrefour was the investor, but they recently sold the project to Assos from Greece and will now own only the supermarket inside.

Akropolis is developed by VP market, Serdika Center is developed by ECE from Germany, Danaos is a Greek company. Mall of Sofia was built by Ocif (Israel) and Cinema City, but they sold the project to GE AFAIK, they are now building malls outside Sofia.

There is another large project whose construction should begin soon, which is a mixed development (office/retail) of 280.000 m2, the GLA is 80.000 m2. They announced the completion of stage 1 to be in 2009, but I doubt that.

It is developed by Riofisa (Spain)

Why are you guys so excited about these malls? They choke the smaller stores outside on the streets.

It would be more interesting to also have GLA (Gross Leasable Area) information. A lot of these malls include carparks, adjacent office buildings, apartments and other public areas which really dont create an accurate impression of the actual size of the retail mall .....

Read this in SIEPA's newsletter:

"BRIF is the first strategic investment fund dedicated to Serbia & Montenegro. BRIF has acquired a project of 57,000 sqm shopping center development in Ada Huja, Belgrade for €13.5 million. The projected shopping center space, as per current design, is modern ground plus one level of 57,370 sqm gross construction areas and comprises total of 44,196 sqm usable retail space, with outside car par providing over 1,980 spaces. "

Anybody got more info (when?, where exactly?)??
