For Silesian Stadium's modernisation Polish goverment spent 182 mln PLN, not Euro. And for long time there was the only one stadium in Poland with more than 20 000 seats. So in Silesian Stadium were matches and it can't be rebuild, it must be modernised only.

new runway(?), and probably change seats.
|R|@|D|U October 24th, 2008, 04:03 PM Very, very nice. If i'm not wrong the stadium will receive 5 stars, highest rating for a stadium. It's a shame that is just a reserve stadium for Euro 2012
AdrianSuvalkai October 24th, 2008, 05:22 PM Informations about constructing (22months):
Start of rebuilding: July 2009
End of rebuilding: May 2011
wearethefuture October 24th, 2008, 08:40 PM Those plans look fantastic! They should choose to use this stadium for Euro 2012, would seem a bit silly not to with its capacity and the fact that the uprades will be newly finished in time.
Maybe it's the fact that this stadium doesn't have enough VIP facilities, they should add boxes/suites, to the top of the two tier stand (allready there) in the gap underneath the new roof, then it really would be a top class stadium.
likasz October 24th, 2008, 10:02 PM Wearethefuture, the main problem with Silesia Stadium is that the visibility from a tiers isn't good.
AdrianSuvalkai October 24th, 2008, 11:17 PM UEFA decides about hosting of Euro2012 for the cities&stadiums, not polish government.
After rebuilding, this stadium will have:
- 20 sky-boxes (for 325 VIP's)
- 1458 places for buisness class
- 750 places for media
- 250 places for commentators
But Likasz has right, Stadion Śląski (eng. Silesia Stadium) hasn't good visibility from old stands. I hope that rebuilding repair it.
likasz October 24th, 2008, 11:59 PM I hope Śląski will have new stands around in the near future. But now the most important goal is to built the roof.
Metal December 7th, 2008, 01:53 PM Just one info: there is a plan to expand the stadium's capacity(after Euro2012) to around 70.000.

Just one info: there is a plan to expand the stadium's capacity(after Euro2012) to around 70.000.
It is only a silly fairy tale, some politician threw it of at least chances and logical reasons there is for the realization no it - maintaining the stadium still will cost a lot of money. I don't know for every generally speaking to place such nonsenses, the visibility at present is already bad, the new II level a lot won't correct, what one can see the 3rd level from whom nothing will be up to? Probably of technical possibilities for the expansion practically won't be.

Companies can submit their offers until 19JAN09.
Net value of the order: PLN 269 280 000 (approx. €67 600 000)
NMAISTER007 March 28th, 2009, 08:51 PM indeed this is a good stadium, but no offense, i don't think they will finish the reconstruction next year. Maybe the stadium will be finished in 2011, but definantly not next year.
Jim856796 March 28th, 2009, 09:37 PM A shame this stadium won't be increased to 70,000, that would have been a perfect capacity for this stadium. Anyway, to renovate the stadium, they would have to take down one-third of the stadium and a two-tiered stand would be constructed from scratch. To match the new stand, I would have torn down the existing two-tiered stand and built a completely new one before adding the roof. This would be like the renovation project of the Melbourne Cricket Ground.
michał_ March 29th, 2009, 05:02 AM A shame this stadium won't be increased to 70,000, that would have been a perfect capacity for this stadium.
And you base your opinion ooooon.... ?
masterpaul March 29th, 2009, 07:22 PM The cool thing about this stadium is that the roof is a seperate structure from the bowl. So yes that means they can demolish/rebuild/expand the stadium after euro. Without removing the stadium.
Lets say for an olimpic bid.
michał_ April 1st, 2009, 04:02 PM The detailed project specifications of the roof have been finished yesterday. It appears that the roof, at least according to Polish Press Agency (PAP) will be the world's largest in terms of surface - 43,000 square meters. Anyone got details on other huge surfaces? I assume that retractable roofs don't count here.

The consortium is to construct a new roof and increase the stadiums capacity to 55211 by rebuilding the east stand as well as providing the necessary infrastructure and technical areas.
A consortium of Mostostal Zabrze submitted the lowest bid and the price was the only criteria for evaluation of tenders.
Another bid - submitted by Budimex-Dromex and Polimex-Mostostal - were more expensive by about 9 and 13 million. (PAP)

Kraków, Chorzów, Warsaw and Poznań would be the best loactions for Euro2012, Chorzów scored in UEFA ranks higher than Wrocław and Gdańsk, Kraków scored the best from all candidates, but people in polish football federation and goverment for their reasons decided to promote other cities. In case of Chorzów there's another problem - lack of PR and proper image. Many people still think of "Silesia Aetro Area" as of heavy industry-only place with nothing to show. In the result they say rubbish like this:
It's simple. Besides stadium there is no many things that Silesia can offer.
(Vide Hotels or tourist attractions )
That's not even close to beeing true and there's much more to see and do in "Silesia Metro" and surroundigs (about 30 cities and towns, aprox. 2,5mio inhabitants) than in Tricity and Poznań alltogethter, but it happens, that image is more important than facts. If UEFA people would have consider fake stereotypes the'd never give Poland and Ukraine Euro, as beeing ignorant about Central Europe in the west is as common, as ingorance about Silesia in Tricity. Lucky for us they did their homework ;)
For benek_gda, delfin_pl and other people who think they know something I recommend visiting this thread: http://www.skyscrapercity.com/showthread.php?t=703860 With 2000 shots showing just a piece of "Silesia city" it maybe a good cure for ignorance ;) Anyway - foreigners are also invited to visit the thread.
benek_gda October 22nd, 2009, 12:20 AM Maybe my reaction was too fast and I offended someone, but I really can't stand you crying over split milk. It's done. There will be no Euro in Chorzów and that's it.
Of course you think that you have been cheated by politicians...whatever.
The point is the the authorities of Gdańsk and region did a lot of to organise this euro and Chorzów from the beginning presented only one argument -history of great Śląski Stadium.
Now you can claim that Chorzów is more attractiv than Gdańsk, has more hotels (with Kraków:nuts:) and so on...
Next time just do your job and don't cry. (It's been almost 3 years of this cry:ohno:)

NMAISTER007 October 30th, 2009, 02:25 AM Poland is not loosing any cities, its Ukraine that we have to worry about, only Kyiv has been chosen, so in about a month we will find out wether Ukraine will be able to co-host the tournament (Lets keep our fingers crossed for that)

It's highly unlikely that you lose the whole turnament. If the worst comes to worst you will lose 1, maximum 2 cities.
NMAISTER007 October 31st, 2009, 02:10 AM Well neither Poland wants that to happen, or Ukraine. I believe that platini will say yes. I mean come on, why did they give us the right to host this tournament? I mean look at South Africa, in about 8 months the World cup will begin, and they still have like 5 stadiums to build. Ukraine on the other hand has a bit over 2 years, and they only need to build 3 more (The Kharkiv stadium is practically done), but only 2 of the arena's will be used. I would tell platini to give Ukraine a chance, we are not as developed as Poland or the countries in the EU.
NMAISTER007 October 31st, 2009, 02:11 AM And yes they do need to improve their infrastructure also.

Well first off, you didnt have to make a second post adding that they need infrastucture, you could have just edited your first post instead of spamming. South Africa already has most of its stadiums completed they just need some finishing touches. Stadiums arent the only important thing, you also need highways, hotels, and a good railway system. I think that UEFA will give Ukraine either 3 or 4 cities but we'll just have to wait.
NMAISTER007 October 31st, 2009, 01:28 PM In exactly 30 days from this post, UEFA will make their decision.

Jim856796 January 12th, 2010, 03:35 AM Based on the look of recent progress, the stepped portion of the single-tier stand at Slaski Stadium was removed to make way for a new 2nd tier. My suggestion for the Stadium after the new 2nd tier is completed: The current two tier stand should be removed and the larger two-tiered stand should be made a full 360-degree seating bowl..

Bartek Suchy January 25th, 2010, 01:58 AM No, Ruch Chorzów is not playing here. But there is an idea to change the color of seats to blue ones.
TwItCH January 25th, 2010, 02:00 AM I think red ones are more appropriate
Bartek Suchy January 25th, 2010, 11:43 AM In Poland colour of the seats is the greates problem of whole construction:D
Gdańsk - planned yellow - decided to green ones.
Stadion Śląski used to be (or is for one more year) a National Stadium. That is why white and red seats. But many people say that there shoud be blue or yellow-blue seats because that are the colours of Upper Silesia region.
NMAISTER007 January 25th, 2010, 07:50 PM I think red ones are more appropriate
I agree, red makes this stadium look more modern :)
Sylver January 25th, 2010, 11:11 PM I agree, red makes this stadium look more modern :)
What? What does color have to do with making a stadium look more modern? Look at Allianz Arena, gray seats and the stadium still looks amazing. Can you actually provide some useful intel before making such stupid posts like you always do?
Anyway, what will this stadium be used for if no one is going to play here? :(
www.sercan.de January 25th, 2010, 11:14 PM why don't they turned it into a football stadium (30k)?
don.lpz January 26th, 2010, 12:23 AM why don't they turned it into a football stadium (30k)?
Because it isnt just football stadium.
In past on this stadium occured many other events.
It's also useless because stadium is not some club property, but it is under administration of local government.
IMO Iit's better to have one bigger "universal" stadium in Poland :)
NMAISTER007 January 26th, 2010, 12:52 AM Can you actually provide some useful intel before making such stupid posts like you always do? <----SPAM
And you are calling me a troll. I am just saying by the look, for me, blue only fits in with some stadium like stadiums without tracks. Its just blue doesn't seem like the right color for this stadium.
MiguelWawa January 26th, 2010, 02:22 PM What? What does color have to do with making a stadium look more modern? Look at Allianz Arena, gray seats and the stadium still looks amazing.
Or Olympiastadion in Berlin, for instance.
However, putting an athletic track there is pointless. There is an athletic stadium in Bydgoszcz (over 20K) and I've never seen it sold out. And local supporters consider themselves as the best athletics audience in Poland. So who really nead an over 50K athletic stadium in Silesia? Don't get me wrong but I've been to many high class athletic events across the Europe and the athletic audience is a bit different from football one. It takes a lot of time to educate that kind of audience. The best way to do so is to organise top class IAAF meetings or European or World Championships. I'm not sure if anyone here knows how the bidding for this kind of events is done, but honestly speaking it's even more unreal than winning that EURO 2012 bid. ;)
Van der Rohe January 27th, 2010, 01:19 AM why don't they turned it into a football stadium (30k)?
Poland needs at least one big athletic stadium

1000city February 23rd, 2010, 01:30 PM why don't they turned it into a football stadium (30k)?
It doesn't make sense. All local teams got their own stadiums, some of them are to be upgraded. All new stadiums in Poland are fotball only, no need for one more. Events possible on universal stadium are more varied. Last year I've been on Monster Jam at Silesian Stadium and imho it's impossible to organise such show on fotball only arena due to lack of space. "Śląski" won't be the polish foootbal temple anymore (National in Warsaw will take it's place), but it should attract many other events. I live few hundred meters from it and find this option very attractive.
www.sercan.de February 23rd, 2010, 02:18 PM Thanks.
So it will be the new antional "Olympic" stadium
lukaszek89 February 23rd, 2010, 02:28 PM ^^unless Warsaw will bid for Olimpics:D
Bartek Suchy February 24th, 2010, 12:04 AM Thanks.

Exacly:) For now this is the best athletic stadium in Poland:
http://www.wjc2008.bydgoszcz.pl/innova/assets/stadion-z-gory.jpg
As far as I know it is the only one in such a good condition. I think that Poland needs one really good stadium that has got atletic track. In 2012 there would be soo many Football stadiums...

Bartek Suchy March 8th, 2010, 01:52 AM Which one? The one I posted? This is stadium in Bydgoszcz not in Chorzów and it is finished.

rakcancer November 11th, 2010, 12:35 AM I think this stadium will be a beauty and very much in needs not only for soccer but maybe even more for athletics events. Unfortunately it is unappreciated and underestimated by some ignorant people. Nevertheless keep up the good job Silesians!

Yes, but You forgot the most expensive National Stadium in Warsaw

I don't see any paradox here. Of course that we musn't build those quite expensive football grounds, but that's obvious almost all from bigger polish cities wanted to host E2012 games, so each one was competing with another - Gdańsk and Wrocław will have way better stadiums than Kraków or Chorzów, the tourist attractiveness of Gdańsk and Wrocław is on good level, comparable with mentioned Kraków etc. etc., so they simply won this battle.
The competition between all host cities is the best way to make E2012 one of the best organized EURO in history, the same like competition between cities to be E2012 host caused, that tournament will be played on absolutely top world class standard stadiums in Gdańsk and Wrocław, instead of only quite decent ones in Krakow and Chorzów.
And Lechia Gdańsk and Śląsk Wrocław have the same football potential like Kraków and Chorzów - even bigger I'd say, because there's no competition from other football team on good level in those cities. Both cities are able to fill own stadiums, if only E2012 will be the accelerator of the progress in polish football.

They needn't have to bulid those stadiums, but they simply want to. Small differance. It was competition between cities, which Kraków and Chorzów lost, so there is nothing to complain of.

mirolesko November 23rd, 2010, 11:48 PM I agree with all things (big cities, best EURO...) but I still think that Poland is not so rich like for example Germany or France, and these stadium are little bit luxury....and Krakow, like a 2. biggest city in Poland should have a stadium at EURO 2012...
Koneser Dobrego Piwa November 24th, 2010, 12:18 AM I agree with all things (big cities, best EURO...) but I still think that Poland is not so rich like for example Germany or France
Obviously yes, but...
and these stadium are little bit luxury....
...that's no so huge luxury, but standard of XXI age. I think you probably have too reserved opinion about economical possibilities of Poland. Of course this both cities could spend this money on something different, but:
a) They wouldn't get E2012.
b) It's not too big damage for Gdańsk's and Wrocław's budgets, both cities realize so many other parts of own development despite spending a nice amount of money on own stadiums. Simply Gdańsk and Wrocław's budgets were enough to make such investment.
c) There's no better way in world for country/cities to advertise own huge development than showing it for bilions people by sport on highest level. E2012 is exactly chance to change opinion from other countries of such people like you.
and Krakow, like a 2. biggest city in Poland should have a stadium at EURO 2012...
No, that's really wrong way to reasoning. The only condition of chosing a host cities of EURO 2012 must be standard of services, which city would be able to give the people from other European countries - if we really manage to get it, we must show the best Poland as we only can show. Wisła's stadium is full of various errors and I'd say quite small as a host of such big tournament.

Id say not.
Silesian Aglomeration - 2 000 000 people, Tricity - 740 000 people, Wroclaw - 640 000 people.
the truth is that Chorzów screwed up the euro2012. We thought that since we have a stadium which already exist we dont need to care about beeing host city.
But thanks God that with euro or not, Silesian Stadium is beeing modernized cause for 360 000 000zł. we wouldnt get anything better

I am not sure where are you getting informations from. According to Wikipedia Tricity agglomeration which contains a few more cities and towns than just Gdansk, Gdynia, Sopot is 1 224 000 people and is 3rd biggest in Poland after GOP and Warsaw Metropolitan Area.
Nevertheless, population as you see is not the only key to win hosting big tournament like Euro 2012. Krakow lost, Lodz lost because there was simply not enough room for everyone and other cities were better.

back to the stadium - its really amazing to see how it grows, lot of people realize now that decision to modernize it for 400 000 000 zł instead of building a new one for about 1 000 000 000zł was a good decission

Totally agree. If I'd see this on TV I would have thought its some Ukrainian stadium.. I know those are Silesian colours but to me it just looks awful. And I think that aesthetics should be taken into consideration first when choosing the colour of seats - not every stadium can be/should be in national/regional colours. But then on the other hand.. people have different tastes and no one will see the colour of seats when the stadium will be full of people..

In the region there is not any single stadium like this ( CZ, SK, HU- ok, they have F. Puskas but it doesn't have roof, RO, LT etc.)
It will be first professional athletic stadium in this part of Europe.

I could post a link but it's in polish.

In Chorzów - very close to Katowice (in fact if you'd be going from Katowice city center to Chorzów, you wouldn't notice that you are in different city) - it's one urban agglomeration of 3 mln people :

I hate to get political but weren't the seats supposed to be red and white, Polish colors. Now they are blue and yellow, Silesian colors. Does this have to do with their recent push for autonomy or something :dunno:

Since stadium in Warsaw was decided to be National Stadium and Chorzow was not chosen for Euro 2012, local authorities decided to give it more local feel, which looks ok in my opinion. Not all Polish stadiums have to be white and red.
BTW - Ruch Chorzów will be playing on the future stadium. Seat pattern also go well with Ruch's colours which are mainly blue.
