dysan1 March 28th, 2008, 10:10 PM The Durban station is poised for a major upgrade to deal with increased volumes, greater calls by luxury train services and the introduction of an expanded rail route network in Durban.
Intersite have called on firms to submit there proposals, with work due to commence by the end of 2008.

Pule March 28th, 2008, 10:17 PM Thanks for the find Mike. It's great to see that they upgrading the station.
Pule March 28th, 2008, 10:27 PM Mike, is this station the one next to the Hilton hotel. If so, then I have been there as I used Grayhound to Durbs last year and the damn taxi guy charged us R45.00 from the station to a car hire place next to The Hilton, we didn't know that it was a walking distance.
What other means of transport does this station have?
dysan1 March 28th, 2008, 10:39 PM it is also the main bus terminus for durban. The roof houses the Mr Price Group HQ as well as a new age church.
The station is next to Metro police HQ and opposite the new Standard bank regional HQ
Pule April 27th, 2008, 10:41 AM When is this project starting?
dysan1 April 27th, 2008, 05:40 PM ^^ it is still at proposal stage, long way to go mate
GregPz April 28th, 2008, 10:54 AM Would be good if it's completed by 2010 as I'm assuming many people will be travelling from this station to the one at the stadium.
btw Mike I've got some friends who go to the church on the roof and they would be mortified at hearing it being called "new age" :)
dysan1 April 28th, 2008, 12:30 PM ^^ lol i have been there once or twice and lets just say its not my cup of tea
Mo Rush April 28th, 2008, 02:48 PM how can it be a proposal? is this the station at the warwick junction?
SA BOY April 28th, 2008, 03:16 PM ^^ lol i have been there once or twice and lets just say its not my cup of tea

No this is the other main Durban station (there are two). The Warwick station will be redone with the shopping centre development. It is the hub for trains arriving from the south of the city.
This station is right near Kingsmead and across the road from the Standard bank development and serves the northern and western lines predominently. This station is also the cities primary bus terminus and the station that houses the rovos rail and blue train lounges and departure points.
SYDNEY April 29th, 2008, 05:37 AM Dysan - can you show us on google where this is ? I am confused and can't quite place it. I always thought that Durb's had one central station ??
ToxicBunny April 29th, 2008, 07:17 AM Sydney : The Durban station that Dysan is talking about is the one next to CR Swart square (the police HQ in durban). Kingsmead is just down the road and the old Durban drive in is just up the road. Durban has always had 2 stations (or at least 2 largish ones)...
I will see if I can get co-ords from Google Earth today, but hopefully that description narrows down the location somewhat.

Thanks mate ... I haven't been to Durban for 7 years, I don't have a clue. Google will help
ToxicBunny April 29th, 2008, 07:51 AM The landmarks I mentioned haven't changed in much longer than that :)

ToxicBunny April 29th, 2008, 12:24 PM Actually on 2nd thought... anyone feel like being a genie or something and making me into Kingsley Holgate... I would love to live that kind of life.
dysan1 April 29th, 2008, 12:43 PM haha
thanx for the google view :) it looks very sprawling from that image! anyone get the other station? so we can have both in the same image to show how far apart they are?
SA BOY April 29th, 2008, 01:06 PM must be relativly new cos the Kingsmead precint is filling up with Standard Bank HQ etc
SYDNEY April 30th, 2008, 01:29 AM Thanks TB ;) .... I have a better idea now.
ToxicBunny April 30th, 2008, 07:03 AM Is a pleasure....
And henceforth I shall refer to myself as Kingsley Holgate :D
Durbsboi April 30th, 2008, 08:00 AM Ok Kingsley, but Mike still havent seen or heared anything about the Kings Park Station :(
ToxicBunny April 30th, 2008, 08:18 AM I would love to see more detail on that Kings Park station... think in some ways it could become a central station for durban given its location and of course if they make it pretty enough....
dysan1 April 30th, 2008, 09:22 AM ^^ it is aimed at being the main tourist transit hub and main future station for the airport trains. Trains will arrive at the Kings park station from the airport, tourists and locals will then be transferred onto the people mover system from this point and distributed to the inner city/beachfront hotels.
The main Durban station will continue in its current capacity of being a primarily commuter station, bus terminus and home of the rovos rail and blue train, but the new kings park station will be used on more than just soccer/rugby days.
But yeh, i also really want to see the design, as funding from KZN transport, Transnet and the like has already been secured.
Pule September 1st, 2008, 01:27 PM Updates please.
dysan1 September 1st, 2008, 02:38 PM Work is supposedly underway. Nothing can be seen when driving by so i presume it is internal work at present. Please dont expect a monster R10000000's revamp. I think should be expecting a minor upgrade, refurb and entrance improvements. Not any form of expansion
Pule September 1st, 2008, 02:46 PM Work is supposedly underway. Nothing can be seen when driving by so i presume it is internal work at present. Please dont expect a monster R10000000's revamp. I think should be expecting a minor upgrade, refurb and entrance improvements. Not any form of expansion
Thanx bro, yeah I remeber that the upgrades are only for 2010 and I wouldn't expect somethng major. I think minimal work will actually be good for the station according to what I saw when I was there year before last.
You guys are at least doing something unlike our municipality who's waiting for private sector to pump money into Park Station. Park Station is lovely inside but outside its a pig stye. I don't see anything happening prior to 2010 as Doornfontein Station have started already so that it can meet the 2009 Confederations Cup deadline by march next year and that station is far way too small to Park Station. To me, both were supposed to be started atthye same time as the exterior upgrade of the park station precinct will be a tedious task.
dysan1 September 1st, 2008, 02:49 PM ^^ is Park not supposed to be pumped full of money as its hosting the Gautrain???
Yeah this station will be more comestic changes than anything... i am however dying to find the renders for the new kings park station
Pule September 1st, 2008, 03:01 PM ^^ i thought that was the case but Neil Fraser said that they waiting for the private sector to pump in the money. it really saddens me to learn about that. I thought that Park Station will be one of the legacy system. You should see all the fvcked up Zim busses who have decided to ope up their bus depot around park station, its really bad I must tell you. Walking in that area bring pain, mind you JAG, Joubert Park, Dri Hill and the the B Rt station which will be completed next month are all located within the Park Station Precinct. My face turns red when I think of all that.
