View Full Version : Dreaming of South Africa
Abdominator March 31st, 2008, 08:31 PM I am a white eastern European male half a semester from graduation from high school and about to choose a university to enroll in.
I have good grades, i speak excellent english and i have been considering trying to enroll in a south african university, most likely in Cape Town (the climate, the culture, and the amazing overall beauty of your country is very appealing)
Is it possible for a man like me to lead a normal life in Cape Town after graduation?
Will i be able to get decent a job, even though i can only speak English?
Will i be living under or on the poverty line?
What quality of life can i expect from South Africa?
Is the natural beauty worth the change?
Thank you! :)
Durbsboi April 1st, 2008, 08:33 AM Welcome Abdominator, UCT is 1 of SA's finest University's so you'll be making a very good move studying there. They have very high standards & the academic qualification rate is in the top ranks in the country. Plus Ive heard campus life there is great & during the weekend or holidays there is no better place to be than CT to party. With regards to after qualification life, If you do manage to get good grades theres no stopping where you can work & with regards to the pay it all depends in which job avenue you are heading into.
Pule April 1st, 2008, 09:57 AM With shortage of skills, you stand a good chance fo getting employed. I know you might be concerned about the issue of Affirmative action but it not as bad as people say. With my previous and the current comapany we atill see al ot fo white graduates being employed but teh fact is that there must be balance.
As for CT University, I say go for it and you will never regret it.
annman April 1st, 2008, 10:11 AM Quality of life wise in Cape Town, as an educated individual... you can expect a standard of living similar to that of Australia or New Zealand... I would not say America, as us and the United States are actually very culturally different, we're a much more social and outdoorsy in our lifestyle. The most similar area scenery, culinary, social and lifestyle-wise in Europe is probably Provence in France.
Abdominator April 1st, 2008, 06:25 PM That's all great to hear, South Africa and Cape Town sounds beautiful, but i am still worried about crime, is it dangerous to walk the streets downtown at night and are there many or any race crimes
And most importantly, are the women beautiful there? :)

EduardSA May 5th, 2008, 08:30 PM Man don't worry about the crime. It's mainly concentrated in a few areas. Also after some time you'll get used to the city and everything will be second nature. The city center is getting very safe, so I would recommend getting an apartment there for the beginning and then move to claremont which is closer to the university. The lifestyle here is great! Especially if you're a university graduate and have a good job (don't worry about AA, SA needs skills so it's not enforced on university graduates).
UCT is a great university. Its the top university in Africa and very popular internationally. What do you want to study? Cuz if its law or medicine, it's practically impossible for non-SA citizens. Humanities, business, and sciences are simpler. I know lots of Americans and Europeans who come here to study and some end up living here. When you walk around the campus you will always hear American, British, or French accents.
What country in Eastern Europe are you from? Cuz I lived there and I will be able to give better advice.

Cape Town is like any other European City where the same rules apply. So DON'T go and walk around Gugulethu and Khayalitsha at night and claim that 'I didn't know I wasn't supposed to'.
Would you walk around the dodgy parts of Warsaw or Krakow at night? NO !! So please don't do it when you're in Cape Town.......
