Huambo is the capital of Huambo province in Angola, Africa. The city is located about 220 km E from Benguela and 600 km SE from Luanda. The city's last known population count was 225,268.
Overview
Huambo is a main hub on the Caminho de Ferro de Benguela (CFB) (the Benguela Railway) that runs from the port of Benguela to the Congo border.
Airport: Nova Lisboa Airport.
The civil war halted Huambo's development and destroyed a great part of its infrastructure, but the advent of peace in 2002 brought a new era of reconstruction and regeneration. Before the war it had had some important food processing plants, and served as the main exporting point for the Province's considerable agricultural wealth. Huambo was also known by its numerous educational facilities, especially the Chianga Agricultural Research Institute (currently part of the Faculty of Agricultural Science).
Colonial history
Huambo was founded on 8th August 1912 by Portuguese General José Mendes Norton de Matos. In 1928 it was renamed Nova Lisboa (New Lisbon), indicating that the colonial administration intended making of it at some point the Capital of the colony. By the 1920s Huambo was one of the main economic engines of Angola. After independence in 1975, it was given back its original name.
Modern history
Huambo had a population of 203,800 in 1983, but became the site of a brutal battle during the bloody civil war between the government and UNITA from independence until the death of rebel UNITA leader Jonas Savimbi. The city was besieged, extensively damaged, and its civilians were massacred en-masse or fled the city.
Upon independence in 1975, Savimbi declared Huambo to be a separate republic within the nation. However, with the help of Cuban military expedition, the MPLA government retook the city on 8 February, 1976. However, the surrounding area remained in the UNITA camp.
By mid 1976 the Cuban troops had established their most important structures in Huambo town in the area of San Pedro, Lufefena and Cruzeiro, and strong garrisons in most of the other municipal capitals and main towns, but UNITA had the control of nearly all of the territory in between.
Displaced people started concentrating in towns, seeking physical protection and humanitarian assistance. In this context, one of the first humanitarian agencies to arrive in the Province of Huambo was the ICRC (1979). In 1984 the conflict escalated dramatically, and so did displacement into towns. A major relief operation was launched in the capitals of the Central Plateau and in a good number of the municipalities still accessible by plane. By then the largest part of the roads were controlled by UNITA and heavily mined.
In May 1991 a peace agreement was reached between the Government and UNITA. United Nations agencies and NGOs progressively moved in between mid 1991 and 1992. The situation gradually improved and general elections were called for in September 1992. But trouble set off as soon as the results of the polls were disseminated. Unrest arrived to Huambo very rapidly, as UNITA considered the Province in a way as their political shrine. They concentrated in the town most of their leaders and a large section of their troops soon after the defeat in the elections was made public.
The city would still be formally under the control of the Government, but tension progressively built-up due to increasing violent actions involving UNITA militia. By the end of 1992 all foreign aid agencies had withdrawn from Huambo. UNITA took full control of the town in the course of a horrendous street-to-street battle that started just after Christmas 1992 and reached its climax by mid-January in the following year. Violent combats in and around Huambo continued still for 55 days, until the Government troops retired and UNITA gained full control of the city. Most other cities in the Central Plateau were occupied too by UNITA at the time, through no less violence and massive destruction. The armed conflict flared up again in August 1994. A large offensive gave back to the Government the control of Huambo on 9 November, and soon after all other provincial capitals. The UNITA headquarters was then moved to Jamba in the province of Kuando Kubango.
The war ended formally on November 20, 1994 with the signature of the Lusaka Protocol. To a great extent this step meant a move towards normalcy, and was received in Huambo with moderate optimism. UNITA moved again its headquarters soon after signing the protocol, this time to Bailundo, some 50 Km north of the provincial capital. This relocation raised serious concerns among most observers.
By 1995 free transit of people and goods was quite re-established in the Province. By the end of the year the United Nations peacekeepers (UNAVEM III) had been deployed too in Huambo, following the provisions of the Lusaka peace protocol. 1996 and 1997 were years of relative improvement of the living conditions of civilians in Huambo, although return movements were only moderate, reconstruction slow and commercial activities didn’t regain their past vigor.
After the United Nations Security Council enforced sanctions against UNITA (29 October 1997) because of delays in the implementation of the Lusaka protocol and reluctance to demilitarize and turn over its strongholds, insecurity in Huambo increased gradually, especially in the second half of 1998. I n early December the Government launched an offensive aimed at taking the last strongholds held by UNITA in Huambo and Kuito, this new war outbreak soon extending to other regions of the country. Huge population displacements started once again from the rural areas to Huambo, Kuito and Caala. Large camps of internally displaced people were then installed in these cities as the Humanitarian Community was forced to retire out of UNITA-controlled areas, withdrawing completely by the end of the year and concentrating in Huambo, Caala and, later, Ukuma.
The security situation got extremely volatile. As Huambo and other major towns in the Plateau were being shelled from Bailundo and other positions still in possession of UNITA, two Hercules C130 aircraft chartered by the United Nations with 23 people on board were shot down over Vila Nova (Dec. 26 and Jan. 2, 1999), as they were trying to evacuate to Luanda the last remains of the UNAVEM III mission in Huambo.
The Government took again the town of Bailundo in October 1999. Londuimbali, Vila Nova and some other large towns in the Province were already under the rule of the Government, and in December 1999 the administration of the state had been reestablished in all municipal capitals. In this period the conventional war that the Province had known gave way to guerrilla warfare, UNITA still controlling most rural areas and randomly striking military or police installations of the Government, and often civilian communities too.
The exodus of civilians into Huambo and Caala experienced a new boom. In early 2000 there were over 25,000 displaced people in the village of Caala, and over 40,000 in Huambo town. As international sanctions tightened around UNITA, their military actions in Huambo got more frequent and destructive, reaching a peak of violence by the end of 2000.
In October 2001 the Government launched a renovated offensive against UNITA from the North and the South of the Province, combining this time strict military action with what were known as operações de limpeça, literally, cleansing operations which consisted in removing from rural areas large groups of population which were subsequently forced into a few, specific concentration points. The idea behind this strategy was depriving the guerrilla of the potential support it may still find in the villages they formerly controlled in the bush, making their natural habitat unlivable. In the short term this resulted in renovated pressure over available resources in safe areas of the Province, and in many cases in the death by starvation of groups trapped by the conflict or impeded to reach any of those zones. This point probably represents the climax in the hardship the rural civilian population went through in the Province of Huambo for the duration of the war.
The death of Jonas Savimbi in February 2002 and the subsequent signature of a new cease-fire brought back tranquility to the Province and set the conditions for the present ongoing peace process and the beginning of an era of development.

BlackLion April 2nd, 2008, 07:04 AM Huambo. What a tragedy. But it's really refreshing to see that reconstruction is going on in the heart of Angola. Perhaps one day Huambo can return to the legendary status it enjoyed in colonial times when it was proposed to be the capital of not just Angola but of the entire Portuguese empire. There is definitely a lot of work to do in this region of Angola.

Blacklion, let´s be optimistic!:)..if I had the power I could turn back time for a number of countries and install good leaders. If I had three wishes free for Africa....
I would place a combination of Nelson Mandela and Singapore like political figures at the helm of Nigeria (after independence), Côte d´ivoire (after 1993) Angola (after independence)...but these are just dreams and wishes.
Anyway, regarding Huambo I think that it will come back on its feet although it might take 10 years or more.

ekuikui July 28th, 2008, 12:51 AM I came yesterday from Angola, after spending 5 days in Luanda and about 40 in the rest of the country, specially in Huambo, i would say that im happy with what i saw. It seems like Huambo is being built to be a back up or even take over from Luanda, the cosntructions are not in the same level as in Luanda but it is being very well done and with no rush. I had a chance of having a close look to what the local goverment is doing and i was impressed, every single day there are 800-1000 proposals of investiment. There are 3 hotels being built in the city, the roads and public lights are all ok. The roads to another provinces are about 70% done, and the trains from Benguela are expected by 16 of August. Angolan and chinese seem to be sleepless when it comes to work, better than words some few pictures i could take will say what i actually mean.

ekuikui August 10th, 2008, 03:03 AM This garden separates uptown (mainly a residencial area with lots of T3 and T4 styled houses) from downtown (a more comercial zone with tall buildings), the garden itself has an artificial lake, a greenhouse, and recreation areas, studies for the refurbishment of park and lake have already been done and a company has already being pointed to do so. It will be part of a square which will include an ultra moderm library (already U/C), an ecological house, a cultural centre, the already built multipurpose pavillion, theres also an hotel to be totally refurbushed (it has already been bought by a company), and many other other attractions.
This "green" square will change the city's face for the better, in old times it used to be the Mecca of students and lovers.

Go to post #27 and click on quote. Then you'll see what the code looks like to place photos in the thread. You need to have a (free) account with photobucket etc., you'll upload your pics there, and then there will be a line (like in post #27) for you to place in your post. :)
And hello! We eagerly await your pics.

If you wat to post photos you need to upload you photo online, using a internet site like hi5, photobucket, ect. Once you have puted online you go to the proprietries of the picture and copy the URL of it, than put it on this site betweem ......

Yes Matt, the airport is quite small, but it is very well kept and does the job very well. I know that theres already an expansion project for this airport, i dont know whats the status tho. Remember that this airport's runway has the basic standards to recieve international flight (it has recieved a direct flight from Russia). Surely it will get bigger as the province grows.

Matthias Offodile October 4th, 2008, 09:18 PM Lisboa or Nova Lisboa
isn´t it the same like York (city in England) and New York?
popa1980 October 4th, 2008, 09:30 PM I prefer Huambo, a good African name.
skytrax October 4th, 2008, 09:44 PM Lisboa or Nova Lisboa
isn´t it the same like York (city in England) and New York?
Nova Lisboa = New Lisbon
There many places called York... I case of Lisbon there a only few places in USA, but normally they can't be traduce to "Lisboa" in portuguese.
I prefer a city with an unique name: Huambo.
mbanzacongo October 4th, 2008, 10:13 PM No i like the name nova lisboa you know after the independent with portugal the angolans have give the citties outher names
om hp;e angola the citties have outher names i thnk that they can beter put some old names back its beter for the tourism if you look at the map and you see a white european name in a african country your intres is bigger than for a african name
for me they can rename the city of
Uige in Carmona
huambo in Nova Lisboa
namibe in Mocamedes
ndalatanda in salazar
and mbanza congo in Sao salvador do congo
just this city names they can keep the other names
skytrax October 4th, 2008, 10:22 PM ^^ :omg: I can't believe in what I am reading.
So for only European names can be interesting. I have you ever heard about Asia?
Aren't you proud to have Angolan names the cities of your country?
And Ndalatando in Salazar????? this is to much for me
Matthias Offodile October 4th, 2008, 11:23 PM No i like the name nova lisboa you know after the independent with portugal the angolans have give the citties outher names
om hp;e angola the citties have outher names i thnk that they can beter put some old names back its beter for the tourism if you look at the map and you see a white european name in a african country your intres is bigger than for a african name

Salazar was an evil dictator and no city should be named after a facist dictator.
To my mind, the majority of city name should be kept with Angolan names but one or two cities should be given their original name (just for historic reasons). Francophone African cities kept many of their old names (except Congo which i can understand that they have renamed them because they were named after Belgian royal family, there is no link)
Brazzaville (capital of Congo, two years back a mauseloum was built for the explorer attached with library): named after an explorer but he was a kind man considering his mission, you can read about him on the net
Port Gentil (Gabon) : named after Emile Gentil who founded the city or Franceville or Lastourville
Saint Louis in Senegal
San Pedro or Grand Bassam (former capital) in Ivory Coast..living side by side with African names like Korhogo, Abidjan, Yamoussoukro
Port Harcourt in Nigeria, new cities that were built by Nigerians have African names like Abuja:cheers:
But in case of Angola it is slightly different, in my opinion:
So why don´t give the city centre at least its original name of Nova Lisboa and keep Huambo as a name for the province, Namibe should be given its original name Mocamedes!? But the rest should keep their Angolan names!!!!
As for Asia: Singaporeans don´t deny its British heritage or street names and the founder of Singapore "Sir Stamford raffles" stands firmly to greet every new visitor, Malaysia still has a city called Georgetown, in Vietnam the old name of Saigon (from Ho Chi Minh City)...India renamed cities like Bombay (now Mumbai) or Chennai (formerly Madras)
but South America kept almost all of its old names when the cities were founded by a foreign explorer.
but the majority of the cities should have Angolan names, I totally agree with skytrax!:)
But as for this horrid communist city street names, 90% should be given Angolan and their former Portuguese names...10% should be kept for historic reasons.
nobody is saying to copy Namibia where all city names are still German or Afrikaans!:ohno:

No, I don´t think so! This has something to do with history and nothing with having complexes or being subservient to anybody!
Cabo Verde and Sao Tomé and Principe kept all their original names (I don´t say that Angola should do this, this would be next to madness but two names just for historic reasons...the Spanish kept names from the time the Arabs rolled over them...)..it is history not more and not less.
Two cities names should be renamed out of all those renamed cities but that´s just my opinion: and Nova Lisboa and Mocamedes would be best suited for that. Moreover, the province which is more important than a city could keep its names Huambo.
But in any case, Angola has other problesm to solve first before thinking about names, that´s really the last that should be on anybody´s mind.

Matthias Offodile October 5th, 2008, 08:27 PM mbanzacongo, please open a new thread for Kuito pics! This is Huambo thread, it should be more organized.
Moreover, let´s keep the debates out about name change, this topic is highly sensitive and explosive! it is maybe for a new generation of political leaders (those that have no direct linkage to colonialism which is still not the case for all the current leaders) to decide whether they wish to rename Huambo into Nova Lisboa or not...in the meantime, more pressing issues should be solved than a name!

agostinho October 12th, 2008, 08:54 AM somente desejo que esta cidade torne a ser o kuito que visitei em 1980, a guerra ainda não a tinha afectado, porque era somente feita nas matas.i just wish kuito can become again the one i visited in 1980, the war had not affected much this city because it was only in the bushes by then

agostinho October 12th, 2008, 07:50 PM Hey Agostinho i have a question how whas kuito in the 80's in that time there was no war in the city right?
how whas the city?

Kwame October 26th, 2008, 11:12 PM I say the city has changed for the better (360°, as in full turn around).
The driving is another issue...
skytrax October 26th, 2008, 11:57 PM A whole 360º turn, for me means that nothing is change (you go all around and land at the same place). But a 180º turn, means that every thing is change, cause now is the opposite.

I don't really Understand this dispute. If i can opine, the People of Angola call this city Huambo. We should surpass old disputes like cologne -metropolis, blacks-whites...Angola is a sovereign country and his people also: As we say in Spain: punto pelota (nothing to say). The names of the EEUU cities were placed because they were a new continent, very differente to be colonized, i think, and very thanks to let me give my opinion.
ekuikui February 13th, 2009, 05:25 PM I think I've writen about this park some time ago ,but I still must confess that I'm impressed with this city.

Barragon March 2nd, 2009, 11:13 PM ^^ Realmente é complicado :ohno:

popa1980 July 7th, 2009, 09:45 PM I still think this should be made the capital. Luanda already has the oil industry. Perhaps no city suffered as much during the war and the transfer of thousands of jobs would give it a MASSIVE boost.

StormShadow September 19th, 2009, 08:11 PM Matt does it yet again, quality find, Matt! I recall the "racing" images you posted which were taken during the 1960's from various locations in Angola, in particular Huambo. So it all appears to be back, at least to my knowledge. The pre war Angola is returning in someway, plus including many extras. modernity of this century.

popa1980 July 27th, 2010, 08:55 PM Angola is the only SS African nation taking city design seriously. In Ghana there are no parks and places for people to relax in the sun.
I have said it before, Huambo should be the capital. It would help it economically and help develop the interior of Angola. Luanda would still be the oil and economic capital so such a move would not affect it much.

Matthias Offodile October 8th, 2010, 03:06 PM Is that a new hotel? I can´t believe it. It looks dreadful. JusT like it was decorated with used furniture from grandma´s living room. Heavy curtains and colours that don´t match AT ALL!
I am not terribly fond of the second hotel even though it is more appealing.... but with that dead and stuffed animal skulls, it has the feel of some 1950s movie scene that is set somewhere in deep Bavaria.
The terrace looks nice though.
Nevertheless, Huambo MUST do much better than that.

I dont think this is considered to be a hotel, sometimes refer to "hotelaria" as way of describing something is somewhere in between a B&B and a hotel.
I think places like this are also important to have in a city, remember that some people don't really like staying in big hotel but rather stay somewhere more homely (hence the grandma's furniture).

well you two must be loaded and visit only 4 and 5 star. i've travelled all over uk and europe and these look like pretty decent standard places that are always full. the greater the variety the better. your too harsh bro.:ohno:
Mwatangua October 9th, 2010, 04:15 PM there goes the sindrome. He he he...
popa1980 October 9th, 2010, 05:55 PM Matt and Evany must be millionaires. Ive stayed in worse places like that. Any nation serious about tourism must provide a range of accomodation from backpacker hostels to 5 star hostels. There is nothing wrong with this hotel!
Matthias Offodile October 9th, 2010, 06:53 PM it has nothing to do with being millinoires...I stayed in small pension in Turkey which was stylish and colours matched...it is not a question of five star accomodation. There are five star hotels that look dreadful.
what I am talking about .... have a look at pensions and small hotels in South Africa - a lot of attention to detail - cheap and stylish!

matt these places are ok by european standards. travellers will like them, stuffed head and all. chic is good for the high places but come to the uk and you'll pay more for worst places and poorer service. this wont put off visitors.

I recommend you to take a look at South Africa - cheap and stylish - for the normal tarveller. you get great small hotels for $30 including breakfast. So why South Africa and not Angola?
The hotels shown are anything but good...Huambo is not a small province twon, it should compete with Luanda and other places
Matthias Offodile October 9th, 2010, 09:01 PM and London is not Huambo! Huambo is not a world city like London...hence it needs some big bang projects to lure in the crowds
I don´t want a second Dubai there but do you honestly belive that Dubai would have ever made it that big if it had done everything small and mediocre? You need to show presence:::MAKE IT BIG
I always wonder why Asians have understood it so well .....they knew how to build super luxury hotels and pensions great spas superb restaurants and small side-walk hang-outs...that´s what has lured tourists....and all is affordably priced.
Matthias Offodile October 9th, 2010, 09:07 PM Build it and add marketing, study people´s psyche/consumer behaviour ...the people will come and and one can reap enormous profit!

Mwatangua October 11th, 2010, 01:14 PM Who compares the usa and england to angola and expect angola to be in the same standard as these two? You gotta be crazy! When did the usa and england get independence/peace and when did angola ask urself these questions! We need quantity in angola before the prices drop. and where did I contradict?
Angola´s construction - often celebrated - is still a drop into the ocean (given the three decades of non-construction/destruction/ and the enomous head-start of other countries in Asia...or South Africa, Egypt when we stick to Africa)...construction across Angola has to be multiplied by factor 20 before we see prices drop considerably!
Bear in mind that there is still 1 million square metres missing just for the city of Luanda...we are just talking for Luanda here and merely the commercial property and not residential one.
Matthias Offodile October 12th, 2010, 09:30 PM dubai is just a one city of united arab emirates. Go to other cities you will be suprised! Not everything is flashy!
that´s true but still the other emirates are very well developed, clean, inviting and modern in appearance. Go to ultra-rich Abu Dhabi, visit Al Ain and Sharjah...even more "secluded" Ajman, Fujeirah and Ras al-Khaimah have stepped up tremendously in the past couple of years/decade.

which big flahsy hotels? The problem is that there WERE NONE to speak of! or do you mean Hotel Presidente? A few flahy ones are still u/c...and I do hope to see the proposed and approved ones to take off shortly. Global competition is not sleeping. You cannot relax your guard or you are out of the game, as simple as that...and the others reap your profit!
Small hotels MUST be standard, not noteworthy at all...Angola can easily absorb hundreds of those scattered throughout the territory.
Damn, tourism is really not rocket science. it is very easy and Angola is perfectly marketable
