what's happening with Baitul Mukarram??

I pointed this out on a GoogleEarth image a while back...and later Clearsky or someone posted an interior pic. They have covered the old courtyard on the east side with a roof, and the garden to the south has been paved over. From your pics it seems they are building a new courtyard in front of the old courtyard to the east.

The proper spelling has now been modified upmarket to 'Karwan Bazar'. :)

The yellow filter added is a feature of most digital cameras and can also be added in most post-processing software (including Picasa).

^^The proper spelling of the place always had been "Karwan". A word of Arabic (or Farsi) origin - meaning "traveling in a group". The word caravan has been derived from it.

With digital photography, filters are not so popular.

I think all of you know about it but would like to mention anyway, as far as I know (from newspapers) BGMA building has been saved from demolition. So, they will find a work around for the Hatir Jhil project. And Hilton has been asked to look for alternate site.

Anyway, any update on the Jamuna Future Park project? That is the biggest construction and we haven't heard anything about it for a while. Perhaps Tareq or Mirza can help shed some lights on it!

Mirza, is that Far East Tower to right of Mehraba Plaza in post 68? And what is that one going up to the left of Mehraba?

Post 67 is interesting to me for a number of reasons...this is first time I have seen a shot of City Center in context of the skyline, and it also gives us a view of the new Baitul Mukarram courtyard. That minaret looks (at least the top of it) to be based on those of the mosque at Makkah.

Yep,thats the Fareast Tower. The shorter tower underconstruction is still not known to me,but it does have one bank at the ground floor already.Hope it reaches the 20 storey height. Also in the second pic of post #68,you can see the Akram Tower and Al-Razi Complex being constructed at Bijoynagar on the right.

RE: Post #71 @clearsky,

I knew plenty of friends at WAPDA Colony (The red and white structures in the image) back in the 70's -- all of them have left for the UK and the US.

Lot of good and bad memories in those five story apartments with my friends -- including chasing monkeys one afternoon, watching the house of Hassan Askari (behind Paribagh Shahsaheb's Darga) burn in december 1970, Watching processionists get shot at Elephant road on 26th March 1971...

But I digress.

I think WAPDA Quarters with their 60's design have more class compared to that big box behind it.

@Mirza,

The area behind the WAPDA quarters (next to Elephant Road) belonged to BCS Academy about twenty years ago. Don't know who it belongs to now.

Banani-Gulshan View

slums seem to be growing and growing...

Where there are wealthy folks I guess there have to be poor people to service them...but I do wish govt would build housing for these folks elsewhere. This particular piece of land was supposed to be a park...it would have had a great panoramic view of the increasingly contiguous Banani-Gulshan-Mohakhali skyline. Also since this area is increasingly the commercial center of Dhaka, this slum is bound to feature prominently in many future pictures of the city. It doesn't really make a great poster-shot.

City streets to come under microscope
DMP to bring the whole city under the vigil of CCTV cameras
Rizanuzzaman Laskar

http://thedailystar.net/photo/2008/05/21/2008-05-21__city02.jpg
Busy intersections of the city are soon to come under the scrutiny of CCTV cameras. Photo: STAR

The city streets are about to see dramatic changes in terms of security measures soon as Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) is working on its most ambitious project to bring the whole city under the scrutiny of closed-circuit television cameras.

Under the Tk 61-crore project 32 large digital billboards will be installed at s ome major points of the city from which drivers and commuters will get up-to-date information on the traffic situation of nearby streets.

"We are hopeful that the whole scheme will be finished by August this year," said a top official at DMP.

The 'command control and communication system' project will provide for over 176 closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras to be placed at 59 city spots to monitor traffic movements and other activities in the streets.

The CCTV system involves a kind of broadcasting that can only be seen on specified receivers connected to the television camera.

The cameras will be used to make sure that traffic rules are being followed accordingly. Conducts of on-duty traffic officers will also be closely monitored. Appropriate actions will be taken if any officer is found engaged in illegal activities, sources said.

Details of haphazardly parked vehicles will also be jotted down so that nearby traffic sergeants can take actions against the driver. Officers on monitoring duties will keep a close eye on the streets to check crimes.

In case of street muggings, escape route of the culprit(s) can be easily identified through these cameras, the sources said.

"The possibilities are nearly endless," said an official from the Media and Communication Department of DMP. "Another important benefit from the use of this technology is that we can closely monitor general trends and conducts in streets."

"We would also be able to monitor the patterns of street crimes, which will give us invaluable information on how the criminals operate," he said.

This type of 'digital communication system' has produced great results in countries like Singapore and Malaysia, he added.

A Malaysian organisation named Folec Telecommunication is helping the DMP to set up and operate the technology. All the necessary equipments have already been brought to the police command control centre at the Police Headquarters on Abdul Gani Road.

DMP officials believe this technology will revolutionise the police job of regulating traffic movements. It will also help them cut street crimes by a big margin.

"City dwellers will feel more secure in streets with the introduction of this technology. They will benefit greatly from this new scheme," said a police spokesperson.

In a bid to regulate traffic movements, automatic traffic signals were installed at 76 points of the capital city. But many drivers drive cars haphazardly near these signals and deliberately flout the signals. As a solution to this problem, 8 to 10 CCTV cameras will be installed at each of these traffic points.

These cameras will be monitored by six base stations, which will have direct communication with the command control room at the Police Headquarters.

"For example, if the officers at a base station can identify the possible source of a tailback, they will inform the control centre, which will direct the nearest traffic sergeant to the source of the problem so that he can deal with it," said a DMP official.

"The command centre can direct traffic sergeants to take actions against violators of traffic laws more easily with the help of the cameras," he said.

The major spots where the cameras will be installed include Farmgate, Paltan, Jatrabari, North South Road, Matsya Bhaban, Kakrail, Malibagh, Mouchak, Bangla Motor, Gulshan-1, Gulshan-2, Science Laboratory, Banani, Mohakhali, Kakali crossing, Rangs Bhaban intersection, Asad Gate, Russell Square, Nilkhet, Shahbagh and High Court.

Under the scheme the traffic officers will use Terrestrial Trunked Radio (TETRA) communication system. This technology will allow its users to choose his receivers rather than making the message available to everyone using the same frequency.

A TETRA set can also be used as a regular cellular phone to make calls to cellphone or land phone numbers. The conversations will be instantly recorded.

Sources said that the necessary equipment have already been installed at the control centre. The only thing left to do is installing the CCTV cameras at the designated spots. Setting up of the six base centres are also in process.

The central control room will have three additional deputy commissioners, two assistant commissioners, and four sergeants to monitor the proceedings.

According to sources at DMP, a special team has already completed their training in Malaysia on operating the new equipment.

Almost one-third of the scheme has already been completed. Installing CCTV and base stations may need another five months or so.

Really? They don't seem to be able to operate the traffic lights correctly? How are they going to operate CCTV? Is it another pork barrel spending (equivalent to BD govt.)? There are "few" CCTVs installed at ZIA and unfortunately they remains "inoperative" state year round.

Where are the lawn mowers bought by the City Corporation? How can nice parks like these go without landscaping?

The only thing that needs to happen is fence off the area and charge a nominal fee for usage (subcontracted to a good firm). Security needs to be ensured as well.

I'm sure people from the surrounding areas are itching to use it for evening walks but can't because of thugs/muggers.

I'm another alumnus :) though a little later than you...by this time they had several houses in Dhanmondi...the main one was opposite where the "boat-house" is today...in a building that used to be the former Chinese Embassy I think. I don't know if you were in the same building but the lakefront there looks very different today, just looking at the pics in the Metro Dhaka and Landmarks threads. Scholastica seems to have survived a spat in mid 1990s when many of their older teachers had a falling out with Morshed and left to form "Mastermind."

Yes, she and a number of Scholastica higher-ups are from Urdu speaking stock...I guess what we would call "Bihari." But exactly where her family originates, I couldn't say. Her husband's name was Tanveer Morshed...she took over when he died many years ago (1970s I think). Her son was in school a few years ahead of me...he used to coach us in football sometimes...I forget his name though.

Scholastica Group was very recently re-branded as Ascent Group, with businesses in education and retail, among quite a few things. Apart from Scholastica, they own SPEED, which is a training and continuous education center that provides training for professionals and adults. With regards to retail, they manage the Etcetera stores (there are three outlets - Dhanmondi, Uttara and the new Fashion Exclusives one in Gulshan which just sells apparel). The outlet in Dhanmondi is currently closed for renovation. Etcetera also owns and manages the Coffee World and Pizza Corner stores here. They also own OHS, which is an interior-designing company.

Yes, she and a number of Scholastica higher-ups are from Urdu speaking stock...I guess what we would call "Bihari." But exactly where her family originates, I couldn't say. Her husband's name was Tanveer Morshed...she took over when he died many years ago (1970s I think). Her son was in school a few years ahead of me...he used to coach us in football sometimes...I forget his name though.
i come from an urdu speaking family too but we arent biharis not every urdu speaking family is bihari you know..

well it was mandatory in my family till my dad's generation that all the children be fluent in arabic, bengali, english, farsi and urdu

Scholastica seems to have survived a spat in mid 1990s when many of their older teachers had a falling out with Morshed and left to form "Mastermind."
that was in the last 90's noh? mastermind formed in 97 cuz i started MM then and it was all brand new

well pre 1947 urdu was the official language of India since the mughals hence many families in bengal who used to do business all over the country used to use urdu more often

The next project for Bangladesh should be to make those electric wires underground

They had looked into this from PDB and REB already thirty years ago. Problem is everything needs to be 100% watertight, no matter what is used for encasing the wires (epoxy, UPVC conduit) -- given our yearly flooding aspect. Even Bangkok where the river flooding occurs yearly -- has all kinds of overhead wires in the old-town area (gold bazaar) just like Dhaka's Sutrapur.

Can you elaborate please on what you're suggesting? A few links would be great.

"If the building is for commercial usage, its gotta be all glass...be it a hospital, university, restaurant, shopping center,or office"-Apparently,this is what all the builders in Dhaka have started to believe.

Not so surprisingly, this belief and the extra money being spent for it,are helping Dhaka get an all new shiny and glamourous look.Below are pictures that show some of Dhaka's countless "glass" buildings:cheers:

They actually spell it 'Voot' and not 'Bhoot'. Their food is quite decent actually - they offer Indian, Thai and Chinese cuisine. Interestingly another party (unrelated to the owners of Voot) has started a restaurant in the Uttara area by the same name and there's a message in front of the Voot in Dhanmondi making it clear that there is one and only Voot in the city.

Well restaurants from this chain are actually leased out for parties etc. - not particularly operating very well as restaurants per se.

Thanks Tmac and Mirza. I always like to see Motijheel photos...my paternal family home is visible in some of the pics. Some of those offices in Motijheel...Janata Bank in particular...seriously need a good water stain cleaning and repainting. Mirza, do you know what the large buidling being built to the south of the stadium...seen in these pics in front of Nagar Bhaban?

One thing that bugs me is why they allow high-rises to be built without at least three to four stories of parking on the bottom floors. I thought they had made a rule in this regard for Motijheel -- not to allow new construction without parking. This should be a great moneymaker in downtown areas so I don't see why not. Example,

Recently there has been a lot of building activity in India by international architect firms like HOK (Hellmuth, Obata + Kassabaum) based in Canada. Here's one of the latest projects for Bangalore that I thought were interesting and educational for us.

Here's Golden Grand (http://www.skyscrapercity.com/showthread.php?t=645935) in Bangalore which are 23 story residential towers -- and which are anything but square.

Their website is a hoot to navigate. you have to go under the Work lettering and choose 'residential' to see further residential stuff etc.

HOK (http://www.hok.com/)

This is arguably and IMO the best architectural firm in the world.
