Mile-high tower: Saudi prince promises £5bn desert spire TWICE as tall as nearest rival being built... Plans for a mile-high tower in the Saudi Arabian desert have been unveiled by the billionaire owner of London's Savoy Hotel.
At 5,250ft, the £5billion project, masterminded by two British engineering consultancies, will be twice as high as its nearest rivals, skyscrapers under construction in Dubai and Kuwait, and almost seven times as high as the Canary Wharf tower in London's Docklands.

i smell april fools...however the structure would have to be one massive thing so it wont topple over... 1.6km high tower, is insane...but who knows the worlds tallest is going to be 818m

No I don't think so someone else mentioned in the supertalls thread a few days back. It doesn't seem to have much to it unlike burj dubai.

OK say it's possible these days to build a mile high tower, not going down the terror or disaster possibilities.....but imagine if for some reason you had to evacuate such a building by stairwells.....??? maybe they could just install giant greased firemans poles or have large ejector pods with parrachutes from higher levels ? Base jumping shouldn't be a problem so maybe you could hide a parachute under your desk...just in case? I wish this project well but you have to consider all angles.

Auxodium: The air isn't thin at 1.6km... so you won't have issues of people going to the top and passing out :P

Why doesnt the middle east expand more horizonally instead of vertically for a change? :P

My word, it's as high as the city of Denver! I've heard that it takes a while to get accustomed to the altitude...anyone for fear of heights?

I can never imagine a modern democratic country getting something like this built. It says something about democracy, these super mega talls are a symbol of regimes. The only place I could ever imagine offering any competition to these middle eastern compensations is china.

China is a moderate regime with no intrest in the biggest dick comp. Only Suadi Arabia the most insolated government in the world could pull this off. A waste of money for a country that has far more important priorities, Dubai builds their big Burj's is for prosperity not show.

What a poor, ugky and mediocre design! I think this building will be another non-realistic project.
