In February 2008, RJ transported 22% more passengers than during the same month last year. The Royal Jordanian fleet transported 169,000 passengers in February 2008, and 140,000 passengers in the same month in 2007.
RJ President/CEO Samer Majali stressed the importance of this remarkable increase in February, a winter month that usually experiences a decline in the number of passengers, especially as it came after the Hajj and holiday season. He pointed out that the growth in the number of passengers flying with RJ became a characteristic for the entire year, not only during the summer, as witnessed earlier.

Majali attributed the great demand on travel to the overall improvement in air and ground services, the implementation of advanced IT systems in the fields of electronic ticketing, Internet booking and the self service check in at the airports. In addition, RJ's young and modern fleet of aircraft covers 55 direct destinations out of Amman and 700 destinations worldwide through the oneworld airline alliance of which RJ has been a member since April 1, 2007, the first Arab airline to join any of the three global airline alliances.

Departures and flying hours also witnessed an increase in February this year over last year. The airline operated 2,412 departures in February this year, marking an increase of 22%, and flying hours reached 7,147 in February, a 23% increase over February 2007. Transported freight also went up by the same rates.

Royal Jordanian, which operates 27 airliners, is continuing its fleet modernization program. On March 13 this year, the airline received its first Airbus A319 out of four which will join the fleet this year and the beginning of next year. Two Airbus A321s will be assimilated in the fleet in April and May this year, whereas an Airbus A321 was phased out last week.

Royal Jordanian up by $28.7m

Royal Jordanian (RJ) reported its 2007 net profit rose 22% or about $28.7m, cited Reuters. Passengers transported throughout the year also increased by 18% from 2.4 million passengers in 2006. RJ has sold 71% of the airline to an initial public last December. Its expansion plans include bringing into service 10 new A320, A321 and A319 planes by end of 2008.

Royal Jordanian still flying high

Royal Jordanian used its recent general assembly to report glowing numbers for 2007 and express optimism for higher profits this year. The company also identified several factors that are driving its growth and explained how it will be addressing challenges that it faces down the road.

Successful IPO

The general assembly was the company's first since the Jordanian government sold 71% of the airline to international and local investors in an initial public offering in December 2007, raising $232m.

There was a great demand for the IPO from Jordanians, who now own 68% of the company's shares - that figure includes the 29% retained by the government, 10% owned by the Social Security Corporation and the 7.7% granted to RJ's employees. The remaining shares from that 68% are owned by Jordanian retail and institutional investors. The final 32% of the shares belong to Arab and foreign investors.

The carrier believes it was the most successful privatisation in Jordan's history, both in terms of performance efficiency and the results achieved in the interest of all parties. The IPO also marks the first time that an first Arab state carrier has been privatised.

Another major accomplishment for the carrier in 2007 was joining the Oneworld airline alliance alongside nine giant international airlines. The carrier thus became the first and only Arab airline to join any of the three global airline alliances, allowing it to broaden its network of 55 directly served destinations to 700 served by the alliance airlines. Its membership in the alliance also secured many other privileges for its passengers.

Costs, however, have become a concern for the carrier due to the increase in the price of oil, which skyrocketed during the past two years. In 2007, RJ's fuel bill was JD165m, compared to JD141m in 2006 and only JD67m in 2004. Now fuel cost represents over 33% of the total operating expense.

Samer Majali, deputy chairman and CEO of RJ, told Reuters that the company's main challenge in 2008 will be to offset the impact of higher fuel prices. He said the company will try to absorb the increase by making its operations more efficient and boosting its revenue by carrying more passengers, adding that the carrier has hedged an undisclosed percentage of its fuel needs this year.

RJ receives new Airbus A321: Al Ramtha

http://jordantimes.com/?news=7201

http://i257.photobucket.com/albums/hh216/yaz-maj/21004_1206520733.jpg

Amman (JT) - At the end of last week, Royal Jordanian received a new Airbus A321, named after the city of Ramtha, in line with the company’s strategic plan of modernising and enlarging its fleet of aircraft serving the international and regional network, and improving services offered passengers.

Another new Airbus A321, Al Tafileh, will join the fleet on May 20 this year. These two aircraft are to replace two that will be phased out after their operating lease terminates in mid-May.

RJ already employs four Airbus A321s, named Al Karak, Al Salt, and Al Ramtha and the upcoming Al Tafileh, on the company’s routes in Europe, the Arab Gulf and the Indian subcontinent.

This twin-engine aircraft seats 168 passengers: 20 on crown class, with 46 inches of seat pitch, and 148 seats in economy. Moreover, the aircraft is equipped with audio-video on demand systems, available to all passengers.

An Airbus A319 (Al Mafraq) was introduced to the RJ fleet on March 13, the first of four in a series of this class of aircraft which will be assimilated at the end of this year and the beginning of the next.

The Royal Jordanian fleet currently has four Airbus A340s, five Airbus A310s, four Airbus A320s, three Airbus A321s, one Airbus A319 and five Embraer 195s. During this and the coming year, seven newly manufactured Airbus A321s, A319s and Embraer 175s will join the fleet. The airline will start receiving 12 Boeing 787 Dreamliners at the end of 2010, as replacement aircraft for the long-haul Airbus A340s and A310s currently operative in the fleet.

The airline, member of the oneworld Airline Alliance, designated names of Jordanian cities on the new aircraft which joined the fleet in order to promote Jordan to the world.

24% Passenger Increase March 2008

http://www.rj.com/FlightTools/PressReleases/tabid/59/Default.aspx?itemID=119

The number of passengers the airline transported last month increased by 24% in comparison to March 2007. RJ aircraft carried 199,000 passengers this March, against 160,000 in the period of comparison last year.
President/CEO Samer Majali said that the average seat factor went up from 69% to 73%, marking a 5% rise over the corresponding month in 2007. He also pointed out that the company achieved high growth rates for all operational indicators last month; the number of flights increased by 18%, flying hours by 20% and aircraft mileage by 21%. Additionally, freight went up by 14%.
Majali mentioned that the operational indicators of this year's first quarter show progress, in spite of the fact that airlines typically suffer from a downturn in demand for travel during this period, compared with the summer months when travel peaks.
Operationally, RJ aircraft transported around 550,000 passengers in the first three months of this year, marking an increase of 17% over the same period of last year. The seat factor rose from 66% to 68%. Growth also extended to the number of flights, flying hours and aircraft mileage, which rose to 17%. Transported cargo increased by 16% during that period.
Majali expressed satisfaction with the results achieved by the company, stressing the company’s distinct competitive edge regionally and globally, attributed to the improved services offered passengers, the modern aircraft recently introduced in the fleet and the IT systems that facilitate travel procedures. Moreover, RJ enjoys a broad route network served directly from Amman or through its membership in the oneworld airline alliance.
RJ employees have the capability and the potential to face the challenges posed by the spiraling rise in fuel prices and the airline constantly works on improving services, and increasing air freight revenues and the number of passengers, said Majali. The company also strives to control costs and strengthen its competitiveness in the air transport industry regionally and internationally.
In 2007, the number of passengers increased by 18% over 2006, and the company achieved JD20.4 million in net profits from JD543 million operational revenues.

RJ revenues up by 31% in the first quarter of this year

The operating revenues RJ achieved in the first quarter of this year went up by 31% over the same period last year.

http://i257.photobucket.com/albums/hh216/yaz-maj/hd_logo.gif

President/CEO Samer Majali said that revenues during these three months increased from JD107m in 2007 to JD140m this year.

The growth reflects the surge in the number of passengers RJ transported during this period, reaching 17% more than last year, and the increase in the seat factor, from 66% to 68%.

Majali added that the final financial results demonstrate remarkable improvement; losses amounted to JD2,975,000, marking a 61% decline in losses as estimated in the budget for this period, and a 22% drop vis-à-vis last year's losses. RJ logged JD20.4m net profits last year.

Majali also expressed satisfaction with the improved financial indicators of the first quarter despite the losses that are usually compensated by the other months of the year, particularly the summer season.

Summer months register record numbers of passengers, and seat reservations for the months ahead show a big increase in the seat factor, due to the great demand to travel aboard Royal Jordanian to all regional and international destinations.

The airline's competitiveness is clearly acknowledged regionally and internationally, said Majali, pointing out that RJ has been introducing premium services to its passengers, new aircraft and IT systems meant to ease travel.

A major improvement is the extensive route network that RJ serves directly from Amman or indirectly though the oneworld airline alliance.

The CEO said that the airline is proceeding with the fleet modernization program that started two years ago.

It has already modernized the medium- and short-haul fleet; the long-haul fleet modernization program will be affected by the recent Boeing announcement that it delays delivery dates of Boeing 787 Dreamliner to different dates corresponding to the dates of purchase orders of the various international airlines.

He said that RJ placed an order in May last year for four Boeing 787s, and intends to take an additional eight Boeing 787s on lease from international leasing companies.

Majali added that the first B787 scheduled to join the fleet in 2010 will be delayed by one-and-a-half to two-and-a-half years as a result of Boeing's decision, considering that different airlines ordered 900 B787s.

He also stressed that RJ, Boeing and some leasing companies are negotiating to find alternative aircraft to serve the route network during the delay time and ensure that the company continues to implement its plans regarding fleet modernization.

Al- Tafileh the new Airbus A321 joins RJ fleet
Royal Jordanian, a oneworld member, received a new Airbus A321 at the end of last week.

The aircraft named after the city of Tafileh, in line with the company’s strategic plan of modernizing and enlarging its fleet of aircraft serving the international and regional network, and improving services offered passengers.

A previous aircraft Airbus A321, Al-Ramtha, also joined the fleet last April.

These two aircraft replace two that will be phased out soon after their operating lease terminates.

The Airbus A321 is considered one of the most modern, high-performance and best-serviced aircraft operating on short- and medium-haul routes.

It is distinguished by its operating efficiency.

As such, RJ uses four such aircraft, named Al-Karak, As-Salt, Al-Ramtha and Al-Tafileh, to operate, along with other airliners of the Airbus A320 family, on the company’s routes in Europe, the Arab Gulf and the Indian Subcontinent.

This twin-engine aircraft seats 168 passengers: 20 on Crown Class, with 46 inches of seat pitch, and 148 seats on Economy, with 32 inches of seat pitch, providing optimal comfort to passengers.

Moreover, the aircraft is equipped with Audio-Video On Demand (AVOD) systems, available to all passengers, whereby each can choose from a wide selection of programs and watch it on his/her screen.

An Airbus A319 (Al-Mafraq) has been introduced into the RJ fleet on March 13, the first of four in a series of this class aircraft that will be assimilated at the end of this year and the beginning of the next.

The airline designated names of Jordanian cities on the new aircraft that joined the fleet and the ones that will join as a part of its mission of promoting Jordan to the world.

Royal Jordanian reviews options in face of 787 delays

Royal Jordanian Airlines (Amman) is weighing its options following the announcement of further delays in the Boeing 787 Dreamliner program. The carrier is considering whether to refurbish its four Airbus A340-200s or introduce replacement aircraft, possibly Boeing 777s, to provide interim relief until their 787s arrive. The airline had intended to use the 787s initially to replace the A340s and then later its A310s. Royal Jordanian recently refurbished its A310 cabins in order to retain the type. The Amman-based carrier is awaiting proposals from Boeing ahead of deciding its best course of action.

Hope they get some 777-300ERs :)

RJ awarded 'Airline of the Year 2007' by Air Finance Journal

The journal published an extensive report including an analysis of the reasons RJ deserves the award which is given once a year to the most distinguished and financially efficient airline worldwide.

Upon receiving the award, President/CEO Samer Majali expressed the airline's pride on such success that adds up to various other prominent awards accumulated during the past two years.

The report points out that the achievements of the airline over the last few years were a polestar to all observers of the air transport industry.

At the end of 2007, the airline doubled its 2001 size in terms of number of passengers, financial revenues, flying hours, flights frequencies and others.

Additionally, since 2004, it has started to achieve net profits under hard operational circumstances and daunting challenges, foremost among them the instability in the Middle East and its effect on the air transport and tourism, the spiraling fuel prices and the sharp regional and international competition.

According to the report, RJ earned this title in appreciation of the success of the privatization process which saw 71% of the total issued share capital for the Initial Public Offering (IPO) floated in December last year.

The IPO witnessed great demand from the national and international investors without the need for a strategic partner.

The number of investors in RJ reached more than 29,000.

The IPO coverage amounted to 140% of the offered shares and JD164.5m of the total proceeds went to the country's Treasury.

By this, RJ is the first privatized national carrier in the Middle East.

Furthermore, the report mentioned that RJ was capable of overcoming hardships and thus received an invaluable international recognition through joining the oneworld airline alliance, as the first Middle Eastern carrier invited to its membership.

Getting into alliances with international airlines reflects the airline's capabilities, safety of operations and services, on a par with those of the other nine giants, members in oneworld.

All this opened much wider travel options to passengers and increased the regional and international network to 700 destinations, with only one stop in Amman.

Royal Jordanian was awarded a number of prestigious awards in the last two years, the most significant being Phoenix Award, presented by Air Transport World (ATW), the leading monthly magazine covering the global airline industry, and the Merit Award for the Airline Turnaround of the Year 2006, held by the Centre for Asia Pacific Aviation (CAPA) in Singapore.

It was also chosen the winner of the Airline Strategy Award in the technology category, organized by Airline Business magazine.

The airline also won King Abdullah II Award for Excellence in the large service organizations category.

Royal Jordanian passenger numbers up 30% last month

During the first five months of this year, the number of passengers went up by 21% and fuel expenses by 91%, compared to the same period of 2007.

President/CEO Samer Majali stressed that there has been growing demand on all RJ's 55 destinations this year, because of the distinguished services offered passengers, the modern fleet of aircraft recently acquired and the electronic systems that facilitate travel procedures at the airport, like Internet booking, electronic tickets and others.

He pointed out that RJ aircraft carried 215,000 passengers in May this year, against 166,000 in May last year. Additionally, the seat factor average increased from 64% to 70% by 9%.

Majali expressed concern about the skyrocketing fuel prices, which cost the airline around JD26.5m this May, in comparison to JD12.6m in May last year, marking a 110% increase.

He said that the current fuel prices constitute a significant obstacle for all international airlines; they limit the ambition to develop and modernize of self-reliant companies.

Majali stressed that Royal Jordanian started taking several measures designed to meet the challenges of the rising fuel prices which form around 45% of the company's overall operational expenses at the time being.

These measures include working to increase the number of passengers and uplifted cargo by delivering quality services and facilitating travel. In order to offset the effect of the increase in fuel prices, RJ raised ticket prices, but has done so reasonably, not to affect the company's competition in the world markets. It also follows the policy of fuel purchase hedging.

Moreover, the airline has joined efforts with the International Air Transport Association (IATA) to take some technical steps bound to reduce fuel consumption, especially in view of the fact that there is direct connection between the weight carried on board and the increase in fuel consumption.

This May saw an improvement in the other operations indicators in comparison with May 2007; the flight frequency went up by 16%, flying hours by 20% and aircraft mileage by 21%. The uplifted freight also increased by 38%.

The improvement has also affected the operations indicators for the first five months of this year, in comparison with last year, with flight frequencies going up by 16%, flying hours by 18%, aircraft mileage by 19% and the uplifted cargo by 25%.

Royal Jordanian Announces New Route

http://www.ameinfo.com/169772.html

Royal Jordanian announced that it will resume flights between Amman and the Belgian capital, Brussels, starting April 1, 2009.

RJ President/CEO Samer Majali said that the scheduled direct service to Brussels has been resumed for commercial reasons, following studies of the Belgian market, which indicated that it is feasible to reconnect Jordan and Belgium.

Majali said the open skies policy signed by the two countries on July 29, 2008, grants Jordan the 3rd and 4th freedom rights to operate between Amman and Brussels directly and with unlimited frequencies.

He added that the airline will serve this route twice weekly, on Saturdays and Wednesdays, using the Airbus A319s, recently added to the fleet. Majali stressed that the route is bound to stimulate relations between Jordan and Belgium and facilitate transportation of businessmen and goods, and serve the Jordanian and Arab communities residing in Belgium. Additionally, it will boost tourism in both countries.

Majali mentioned that RJ resumes putting Brussels back to its route network, having suspending it in 2003. Thus, the airline will serve 57 destinations directly from Amman, in addition to other 700 destinations served by RJ's partners in the oneworld airline alliance.

The Belgian capital is among the first cities RJ flew to, as a direct route, in 1974.

Brussels serves as the capital of the European Union, hosting major political institutions of the union. It is also a significant commercial centre in Europe; it has over one million inhabitants.

Royal Jordanian receives second A319-100

The second of four Airbus A319s, named Ma'an, one of the main cities in southern Jordan was recently delivered to RJ.

RJ, a oneworld member, contracted to introduce this type of aircraft into its fleet during this year and the beginning of 2009, in line with its aircraft modernization plan.

The newly manufactured aircraft brings a new standard of amenities and comfort to RJ passengers traveling to medium-range destinations in Europe, the Indian Subcontinent and the Arab Gulf. The airliner is distinguished by modern features, such as spacious seat pitch and state-of-the-art audio channels and personal video screens available for each passenger on economy and crown classes.

The speed of the twin-engine, operationally leased Airbus A319 reaches 960 km/hour and carries 110 passengers; 94 on economy class and 16 on crown class. It has a cargo capacity of three tons.

This aircraft, belonging to the Airbus A320 family, will boost the company's services, enabling it to better serve the regional and medium-haul route network. It will also augment RJ's existing fleet of Airbus A320 and A321 aircraft assimilated in the fleet in the past two years.

The remaining two Airbus A319s are slated to join the RJ fleet in February and March next year. In the last few months, four planes were introduced in the fleet; two Airbus A321s and two Embraer 175s, and two Airbus A321s were phased out, being replaced by the newly manufactured ones.

Presently, the number of aircraft reaches 28, covering 56 destinations served directly from Amman, and additional 700 destinations served by RJ's partners in the oneworld airline alliance.

The airline designated names of Jordanian cities on its new aircraft that joined the fleet in the last two years and the ones that will join as a part of its mission of promoting Jordan to the world.

Royal Jordanian Turns 45

For the last four decades, this leading company has continuously progressed, living up to its role as the country's only flag carrier, maintaining its identity, history and culture. RJ still performs this role, under the invaluable guidance and directives of His Majesty King Abdullah II, who spares no effort in lending his support to the airline. Thus, RJ continues its strides by renewing its fleet and expanding its route network and operations. http://i257.photobucket.com/albums/hh216/yaz-maj/69098-RJ_crew.jpg

Comparing the results of the first year of its establishment and those estimated for 2008, it can be seen that the number of passengers increased from 87,000 in 1964 to an estimated 2.7 million at the end of this year. The number of flights grew to reach 34,254 this year, in comparison to 4,193 in 1964. Moreover, the number of aircraft rose from four to 28, and RJ's destinations from five to 57.

Financially, the company's revenues were JD1m in 1964, expecting them to reach JD682m in the 2008fiscal year. A large increase could be observed in employees' productivity, from JD4 in the year of establishment to JD159 per employee this year.

Privatization program:

Royal Jordanian was transformed into a public shareholding company fully owned by the government on February 5, 2001. Its capital rose to today's JD84.4m.

In December 2007, the Jordanian government floated 59.9 million shares for underwriting, representing 71% of the total issued share capital, keeping 29% of the shares. RJ shares started trading on the Amman Stock Exchange on December 17, 2007. At that time, Jordanians owned approximately 56.2% of the shares; Arab and foreigner investors owned the rest.

Fleet modernization program:

RJ employs 4,300 people in Jordan and at its outstations around the world, distinguished through their professionalism and expertise. They operate a modern fleet of 28 aircraft covering 57 destinations on four continents. The RJ fleet includes: Airbus A310, A319, A320, A321, A340, Fokker 28, Embraer 195s, Embraer 175s and Boeing 737 aircraft.

To date, Royal Jordanian concluded the modernization program of its short- and medium-haul fleet, having replaced the leased Airbus A310 and A320 aircraft with six modern, newly manufactured Airbus A320 and A321 aircraft for the short- and medium-range route network.

Additionally, RJ introduced seven newly manufactured 100-seat Embraer 195 and 75-seat Embraer 175 aircraft in order to operate on the short-haul routes, to meet the growing demand for travel in the region. It introduced some of these aircraft on capital lease basis, which will end in these aircraft being owned, and some on operational lease basis. They joined the fleet during 2007 and 2008.

The airline selected the wide-body Boeing 787 Dreamliner as a replacement aircraft for its long-range Airbus A340s and A310s operating to the United States, Canada and the Far East. It placed its order to introduce about 12 Boeing 787s under the airline's long-haul fleet modernization program.

The first B787s scheduled to join the fleet in 2010 are being delayed until the beginning of 2013, a Boeing decision. Negotiations are going on with Boeing to compensate RJ for this delay.

Locally, Royal Wings, an RJ subsidiary company, is dedicated to charter business, operating from Amman Civil Airport in Marka.

Route network:

Networkwise, the airline opened new services to Hong Kong and Kiev in 2008 and it will add Brussels next April. The new stations brought the airline's destinations to 57, spread over four continents. In order to cater to the demand, RJ is considering expanding its route network by adding new destinations during the coming three years to: Tehran, Ankara, Casablanca, Algiers, Berlin, Benghazi, Johannesburg, Lagos, Medina, Luxor and Izmir.

Royal Jordanian currently has marketing alliances, through code sharing, with several international airlines: Austrian Airlines, American Airlines, US Airways, Iberia, Malév Hungarian Airlines, Tarom, Gulf Air, Syrian Airlines, Yemen Airways and Thai International.

Joining the oneworld airline alliance:

In view of its reputation and international level of competitiveness, Royal Jordanian was invited to join the oneworld airline alliance. RJ is thus the first Arab and regional air carrier selected to join any of the three global airline alliances (oneworld, SkyTeam and Star Alliance), and the first airline to join oneworld in the last five years.

The airline officially joined oneworld on April 1, 2007, after it completed all technical and technological requirements to become part of the grouping.

RJ's, Japan Airlines' and the Hungarian Malev's membership in oneworld represent 9,000 daily flights operated by ten airlines to more than 700 points in 150 countries. The oneworld member airlines operate 2,500 aircraft, carrying around 320 million passengers yearly. They attain annual revenues reaching $100bn.

Automated systems:

To meet all the requirements of its membership in the oneworld global alliance, RJ introduced several advanced, state-of-the-art systems to link up with the oneworld airline members; the most significant are the frequent flyer program (Hitit), the revenue management system (PROS) and the revenue accounting system (Sirax).

Other IT systems were also implemented to make it easier for passengers to deal with all travel procedures, like e-ticketing, Internet booking, advanced boarding pass and Common Use Self Service check-in system (CUSS), and a new Departure Control System. The airline launched a new 24/7 Call Centre, which offers RJ customers from all over the world reservation services, information regarding the frequent flyer program, flight schedules, luggage and ticket fares. Royal Jordanian provides competitive ticket prices and valuable offers to give wider choices to passengers.

Awards:

Royal Jordanian won five world-class awards, four of which are granted to the air transport industry and one national. It was awarded the Merit Award for the Airline Turnaround of the Year 2006 at the 3rd Annual Asia Pacific and Middle East Aviation Outlook Summit, held by the Centre for Asia Pacific Aviation (CAPA) in Singapore on Nov. 9 and 10, 2006. The award acknowledges the airline's successful turnaround and strong strategic contribution to the aviation industry.

On February 21, 2007, Air Transport World (ATW), the leading monthly magazine covering the global airline industry, presented RJ with the Phoenix Award at the 2007 ATW Airline Industry Achievement Awards in Washington. ATW's awards are of great significance to the international civil air transport.

Royal Jordanian was granted the 'Airline of the Year 2007' award, following a study performed by Air Finance Journal. The award is given once a year to the most distinguished and financially efficient airline worldwide. The Journal mentioned that the achievements of the airline over the last few years were a polestar to all observers of the air transport industry.

RJ was nominated the winner of the Airline Strategy Award in the technology category at the sixth annual Airline Strategy Awards organized by Airline Business magazine on July 15, 2007. It won the award in recognition of its major overall transformation from an unprofitable carrier to a lucrative commercial enterprise through the deployment of modern technology solutions.

The awards acknowledge that RJ has gone through a major transformation. After years of losses, Royal Jordanian changed its business model to focus on traffic within its home market, helping it return to profitability while nearly doubling in size in 2004 and 2005.

The airline also won King Abdullah II Award for Excellence in the large service organizations category. The award is considered the most prestigious reward for excellence at national level, for all sectors.

Royal Jordanian's 'You're there' marketing campaign launched

http://i257.photobucket.com/albums/hh216/yaz-maj/RJ_header_2008_img.jpg

Royal Jordanian launched its new campaign, 'You're there', on December 15, 2008, coinciding with its 45th anniversary.

Vice President/Marketing, Sales and Services Hussein Dabbas said that launching the campaign under this slogan complements the occasion the company is celebrating, both reflecting the airline's long history of progress and prosperity in all fields: fleet, route network, air and ground services, and IT systems which facilitate travel procedures and offer passengers multiple, easy, simple and fast travel options.

He added that the campaign follows RJ joining the oneworld airline alliance which enlarged its route network to cover 56 direct destinations and more than 700 cities on four continents, served by the member airlines of oneworld alliance.

The airline officially joined oneworld on April 1, 2007, after it completed all technical and technological requirements to become part of the grouping.

Dabbas noted that this campaign comes after the one titled 'Change is in the Air', which has been going on for the past two years. RJ underwent many changes and that has had a great positive impact on all services the company provides, especially entertainment. He said that these changes affected customers' loyalty, RJ becoming the first choice for many who travel from Jordan and the Middle East to countries and cities around the world. This is shown by the large increase in the number of passengers traveling on board RJ aircraft in 2007 and this year.

'The objective behind the 'You're there' campaign is to reposition RJ as a world class airline capable of meeting the expectations of the local, regional and global traveler,' said Dabbas.

'A progressive attitude, with more daring communication, needed to be enforced. So we based our campaign on the consumer perception that whenever people travel, whether for business or pleasure, there is always a sense of excitement and glamour. This feeling comes from the idea of meeting new people, seeing places and being part of future events,' he added.

Dabbas said that the campaign is created around the idea that travel is a journey of the heart, mind, body and soul. 'We show this by highlighting the changes that have taken place, such as modernizing the fleet by introducing new aircraft equipped with the best entertainment amenities and services, which reached a high level of development, tailored to become almost personal,' said Dabbas. This approach promises the customers the concrete benefit of getting them where they want, emotionally and physically, since the moment they think of traveling until they reach their destination, he added.

The campaign was first launched through local media and newspapers; it will now move gradually to the various media to reach countries covered by the Royal Jordanian Airline on four continents.

Royal Jordanian signs OnAir deal to offer mobile and internet services
http://i257.photobucket.com/albums/hh216/yaz-maj/69551-Majali_1.jpg

Royal Jordanian and OnAir signed an agreement whereby RJ, a oneworld member, will provide passengers with OnAir's inflight internet and mobile phone services, including email, SMS and voice calls, the first airline in the Middle East to offer such facility.

President/CEO Samer Majali who signed the agreement with OnAir CEO Benois Debains said that the OnAir service will enable Royal Jordanian passengers to use their mobile phones and BlackBerry-type devices to send and receive text messages and emails, and to make and receive mobile phone calls in flight, as well as to use their laptops to access Internet.

He indicated that the European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) granted airworthiness certification to OnAir, testifying that neither Mobile OnAir system nor multiple mobiles cause harmful interference to any of the aircraft's avionics systems.

Majali pointed out that phase one of the agreement stipulates installing the system by the Airbus company in two Airbus A319 that will be joining the fleet in February and March next year. The second phase of the agreement includes implementing the Mobile OnAir Service on the airline's single-aisle A320 family, installed with a standalone GSM/GPRS system at the end of 2009.

Passengers will be able to use their own mobile phones during flights, above 3,000 meters, whereas during take offs and landings, the service will not be operative.

Majali added:

'Mobile OnAir will allow unlimited text messages and emails to be sent, and will allow up to 11 simultaneous voice calls. A central feature of the service is the crew's ability to turn it off at any time, or switch it to 'silent' - text and email only - mode, enabling the airline to customize the services to passengers' preferences. For example, airlines could turn off the voice element, or even the whole service, during quiet times.'

He also said that the Mobile OnAir Service is one important move that will pave the way for airline mobile self-care services. This will allow the passenger to check the flight status, do his check in, view his itineraries and manage bookings, such as changing flights, selecting seats, requesting upgrades, booking bags and selecting meals. Additionally, it offers passengers information about their destination.

'Royal Jordanian is at the forefront of e-travel. This includes providing passengers with the ability to plan trips, book online, issue e-tickets, make online seat reservations and use self check-in kiosks at the airport. We are now pleased to offer the latest technology: on board communications services, enabling our passengers to carry on with their travel planning, as well as to communicate with their colleagues, friends and families, in exactly the same way they can on the ground,' commented Majali.

Debains, said:

'We are very pleased that Royal Jordanian has selected us. It will be the first airline in the Middle East to introduce OnAir's leading passenger communications service and will enable the airline to further enhance its passenger service level in a highly demanding market. It confirms OnAir's role as the leading supplier of passenger communications with customers in Europe, Asia Pacific, China and now the Middle East.'

'To be able to operate this service, OnAir signed roaming agreements with the world's mobile operators, among which three Jordanian mobile operators: Zain, Orange and Umniah. The service is invoiced by the passenger's home mobile operator at international roaming rates,' he added

OnAir was incorporated in February 2005 and is owned by Airbus, the aircraft manufacturer with the most modern and comprehensive product line on the market, and SITA, the world leading provider of air transport focused applications, communications and IT infrastructure.

Present at the ceremony were RJ Vice President/Marketing, Sales and Services Hussein Dabbas, Chief Information Officer Ahmad Abu Ragheb, Head of Engineering and Maintenance Imad Faraheed, Head of Procurement and Logistics Department Samer Abdel Rahim, Executive Assistant/Legal Affairs Hani Kurdi and Project Director Mohammed Obeidat.

You can only evaluate a good from a bad company only until you have a problem and see what they will do and how they will do it, but it is much better than egypt airline who should be banned from flying period.

As part of Royal Jordanians commitment to its airline alliance Oneworld it announced at the alliances 10th birthday celebrations on the 3 February 2009 that it would paint its new A319 due for delivery in mid February in a special scheme, which would be based around the oneworld name and logo. This is the first special colour scheme Royal Jordanian will ever have, marking a huge event for both the airline and its alliance.

Its still unsure what the special scheme will look like, however it is believed that this is the one that RJ will choose...

Passengers now able to make and receive phone calls, send and receive emails and text messages--from 30,000 feet.

The Royal Jordanian launched mobile inflight passenger communications services from industry leader OnAir that will enable passengers to make and receive phone calls, send and receive emails and text messages.

The new commercial service, which will be available in the first phase on its recently received Shobak A319 aircraft (named after Shobak city, in southern Jordan,) flying to Europe, the Middle East, North Africa and India, will enable passengers to stay connected inflight using their own mobile phones or BlackBerry-type devices to send and receive text messages and emails, make and receive phone calls and access the Internet.

Passengers will also be able to access the Internet using their own laptops fitted with GSM data cards.

'Royal Jordanian has always been a leader in e-travel-from providing passengers with the ability to book online to issuing e-tickets, making online seat reservations and using self check-in kiosks at the airport,' said Samer Majali, President and CEO, Royal Jordanian.

'We are very pleased to partner with industry leader, OnAir, to offer the latest passenger communications technology onboard our aircraft, and we expect these new capabilities to further enhance the high-quality customer service that our passengers have come to expect from Royal Jordanian.'

Mobile OnAir uses the industry's most robust and extensive infrastructure for mobile communications, along with Inmarsat SwiftBroadband, high capacity services from Inmarsat 4th generation satellites. With OnAir's advanced mobile communications technology, Royal Jordanian passengers will benefit from global coverage and high-speed connectivity.

Benoit Debains, CEO of OnAir, said Royal Jordanian operates in a highly competitive and demanding market, in which service excellence is critical. "They were the first airline in the Middle East to announce a partnership with us back in December 2007, and we are pleased to offer the highest available standard of connectivity to their passengers, while at the same time helping them generate additional revenues".

Royal Jordanian recieves 3rd Airbus A319.

RJ, member of oneworld airline alliance, on Feb. 22, launched mobile inflight passenger communications services upon receiving the new Airbus A319, equipped with OnAir mobile services.
The new commercial service enables RJ passengers to stay connected while in flight, using mobile phones to make and receive calls, exchange text and multimedia messages. It also allows passengers to send e-mails and access the Internet through smartphones or any other mobile phone equipped with the GPRS service.

http://i232.photobucket.com/albums/ee296/yazm1991/1235343993.jpg

RJ President/CEO Samer Majali said that “the new Airbus A319 aircraft, named after Al Shobak city, in southern Jordan, was received on Feb. 21 and is dedicated to serving the European and Middle Eastern destinations, North Africa and India. It is the first RJ aircraft equipped with its own miniature cell network, so that onboard phones communicate at minimal power levels, which do not compromise flight safety. A satellite link then transmits signals to and from the ground.”
Majali added that next month, the company will introduce another Airbus A319 with Mobile OnAir services, which will be generalised later on all the Airbus 320 fleet, which includes Airbus A320, A321 and A319 aircraft.
Majali said the service becomes active about ten minutes after take-off and remains active until about ten minutes before landing. Special overhead signs and cabin crew announcements will let the passengers know when they may turn on the mobile devices or suspend their usage in order to maintain the comfort of passengers.
With Mobile OnAir, the phone is used exactly as on the ground, by dialling 00 followed by the country code of the destination number. Communication is automatically invoiced by the passenger's mobile provider at home, at international roaming rates, as the aircraft is considered a “foreign country” in the sky.
Majali stressed that Royal Jordanian has always been a leader in e-travel — from providing passengers with the ability to book online to issuing e-tickets, making online seat reservations and using self check-in kiosks at the airport.
"We are very pleased to partner with industry leader OnAir to offer the latest passenger communications technology onboard our aircraft, and we expect these new capabilities to further enhance the high-quality customer service that our passengers have come to expect from Royal Jordanian," he said.
OnAir CEO Benoit Debains noted: “Royal Jordanian operates in a highly competitive and demanding market, in which service excellence is critical. It was the first airline in the Middle East to announce a partnership with us, and we are pleased to offer the highest available standard of connectivity to its passengers, while at the same time helping it generate additional revenues.”
He added that Mobile OnAir uses the industry’s most robust and extensive infrastructure for mobile communications, along with Inmarsat SwiftBroadband, high capacity services from Inmarsat 4th generation satellites. With OnAir’s advanced mobile communications technology, Royal Jordanian passengers will benefit from global coverage and high-speed connectivity.
Debains commented that 80% of passengers who have used Mobile OnAir services on selected flights would like these services to be available on every flight. Mobile OnAir services have been used on flights to more than 56 cities in 24 countries in Europe and North Africa since December 2007.

Royal Jordanian Announces New Route

On June 1, Royal Jordanian will start operating a direct, regular, twice-weekly service between Amman and the Libyan city of Benghazi.

It thus puts the destination back on its route network after around 30 years of suspended service. Benghazi was among the first Arab cities RJ began serving after its establishment in the 1960s.

Operating flights to Benghazi comes in light of the growing traffic of Jordanian and Libyan citizens between the two countries. There is remarkable and active traffic of businessmen and students, and many Libyans come to Amman to get medical treatment.

Royal Jordanian responded to this active travel between Jordan and Libya by also increasing the frequency of flights between Amman and Tripoli from three to four weekly, starting April 1.

Benghazi will be the second new destination RJ adds to its network this year; Brussels is the first one, and the airline will also resume its flights there as of April 1. Along with these two destinations, RJ directly operates to 58 destinations spread on four continents, and more than 700 destinations with one stop served by oneworld's airline members, of which RJ is part.

The flight takes off from Amman on Mondays and Fridays at 12 noon and arrives in Benghazi at 2:05 pm local time. It takes off from Benghazi at 3:05 pm and arrives in Amman at 6:45 pm local time.

Benghazi lies in northeastern Libya, on a gulf of the Mediterranean Sea. It has 1.5 million inhabitants and is the second largest city in Libya after Tripoli, the Libyan capital, which lies 1,000 km west from Benghazi.

Important industries include oil refining, cement manufacturing, tanning, sponge and tuna fishing, and food processing such as dates and olives.

Benghazi airport lies 32 km to the east of the city, and connects the city with some foreign cities, as well as with major cities in Libya.

Queen Alia Airport Statistics 2008

QAIA wistnessed a growth of 16% in passengers in 2008. Bringing the total passnegers to travel through Jordan's largest airport to just under 4.5 million.

Year Total passengers
2002 2,334,779
2003 2,358,475
2004 2,988,174
2005 3,301,510
2006 3,506,070
2007 3,861,100
2008 4,477,800

Royal Jordanian which is based at QAIA is also expected to record its largest amount of passngers in 2008, with early reports suggesting approxmately 2.7 million passengers. Which would mark a huge improvement for the airline which only five years prior was struggling to reach 1.5 million passengers.

But it is still believed (not confirmed) that the airline will record a loss in year prior, due to high fuel prices and the World Economic Crisis, which had an effect on all industries.

I flew to Beirut on Royal Jordanian 2 times and i had a good impressions about it,quality services

Royal Jordanian is a really good airline, i personally believe that its the third best in region.

(This is how i rank Middle-Eastern Airlines, on my experiences alone)

1. Qatar
2. Emirates
3. Royal Jordanian
4. Gulf Air
5. MEA
6. Saudi
7. Etihad (only tried them once, and was very dissapointed)
8. Oman Air

And i believe if RJ improves its Long Range aircraft just a little more, it may become a 4 Star airline.

AMMAN (JT) - With the addition of a new Airbus A319, Royal Jordanian (RJ) has completed its modernisation programme of short- and medium-haul fleet.

The new Airbus, named after the northern city of Ajloun, marked the 19th newly manufactured aircraft added to the fleet since 2006, according to an RJ statement released on Monday.

RJ President/Chief Executive Officer Samer Majali expressed satisfaction with the completion of the initiative, which saw the introduction of four Airbus A321s, four Airbus A320s, four Airbus A319s, five Embraer 195s and two Embraer 175s into the airline’s fleet.

The company's strategy for 2009, he stressed, entails modernising Airbus A340s currently servicing long-range destinations by providing them with uniformed amenities offered passengers onboard other new aircraft.

Majali pointed out that last year RJ modernised three of its Airbus A310 aircraft that serve long- and medium-range destinations at a cost of JD10 million, revamping all aircraft parts, interiors, entertainment systems and engines.

Majali noted that the company is still studying and comparing several alternatives to modernise its long-range fleet, in light of last year's announcement that Boeing delayed its delivery of the first Boeing 787 Dreamliner, which is scheduled to join the fleet in 2010.

In 2006, the airline placed its order to introduce some 11 Boeing 787s under the airline's long-haul fleet modernisation programme.

Majali added that "Ajloun" is dedicated to serve medium-range destinations in Europe, the Middle East, North Africa and the Indian subcontinent and is the airline’s second to provide mobile OnAir services.

The services enable RJ passengers to stay connected while in flight, using mobile phones to make and receive calls, exchange text and multimedia messages.

By the end of the year, the company will apply OnAir services on the entire Airbus 320 fleet, which includes 12 aircraft, according to the RJ statement.

The Royal Jordanian fleet now consists of 30 aircraft operating to 55 direct destinations and additional 700 destinations served by RJ’s partners in the oneworld Airline Alliance.http://www.jordantimes.com/?news=15290

U know I thought they will purchase 8 boeing 787 instead of 11. But it seem they are going to modernized the long-range fleet including the Airbus A340 Fleet.

They are actually planning to 12 787's. But they havent reached a final agreement with boeing for the last one.

I think its good that they want to replace the A340's, because by the time the 787's get delivered they would have aged, and wouldnt be very efficent (fuel wise).

Royal Jordanian considers Boeing compensation deal

Royal Jordanian which has ordered 12 Boeing 787's is facing a major issue, with continued delays of the first delievery of its new long-haul aircraft by more than 25 months. The airline has been forced to place a new stragety into place, due to the huge delay.

At the moment RJ has said it will go ahead with one of the following strageties to compensatate for the delay.

1. Reach an agreement with Boeing to lease 4 Boeing 777's.
2. Reach an agreement with Boeing/Airbus to lease 5 Airbus A330's. or
3. Upgrade their A340's with the new RJ cabin, which includes AVOD for economy class passengers.

However all three options are very costly, and the decision is a very hard one for an airline expected to post a $3 million loss in 2008, due to high fuel prices during the first three quarters of the year prior.

I personally wouldnt mind seeing any of the three options exercised, as RJ needs to upgrade their long-haul aircraft slighty to really compete, with some other airlines.

Royal Jordanian inaugurates flights between Amman and the Belgian capital, Brussels today.

Thus resuming service between the two countries after six years during which flights were suspended for commercial reasons.
President/CEO Samer Majali said that putting Brussels back on the RJ route network is driven by commercial reasons, too. Studies of the market indicated that it is feasible to reconnect Jordan and Belgium.
Majali added that re-operating this route also comes in light of the open skies policy signed by the two countries in July last year, which grants them the 3rd and 4th freedom rights to operate between Amman and Brussels directly and with unlimited frequencies.

Majali pointed out that the airline will serve this route twice weekly, on Saturdays and Wednesdays. The flights are bound to stimulate relations between Jordan and Belgium and facilitate transportation of businessmen and goods, as Brussels is a significant commercial centre in Europe. Moreover, it will serve the Jordanian and Arab communities residing in Belgium, and will boost tourism in both countries.
The airline will operate to Brussels using the Airbus A319s, recently added to the fleet. Two of the Airbus A319 aircraft provide mobile OnAir services, enabling RJ passengers to stay connected while in flight, using mobile phones to make and receive calls, exchange text and multimedia messages. The service also allows passengers to send e-mails and access Internet through smartphones or any other mobile phone equipped with the GPRS service.

The Belgian capital is one of the first cities RJ flew to, as a direct route, in 1974. Brussels, with its over one million inhabitants, serves as the capital of the European Union, hosting major political institutions of the union.

Benghazi is the second destination RJ will operate to this year. The company will start servicing the route starting this June, bringing the airline’s direct destinations to 56, spread over four continents, in addition to other 700 destinations served by RJ’s partners in the oneworld airline alliance.

In late 2002 RJ CEO's announced they would really like Queen Alia International Airport to become Royal Jordanians Hub. The CEO stated "...when u arrive at airports like Dubai, Singapore or Bangkok you know which airline calls that airport home." "We want RJ in the near future to be the same, the presence of many aircraft at the airport not only helps business, but it also increases awareness about the airline."

From this picture, i think the Royal Jordanian Team would be happy.

Royal Jordanian Passengers Flying to North America, Terminal Change

RJ announced that starting April 15, it will check in passengers flying to North American destinations, and all related-operations, at Queen Alia International Airport’s South Terminal (1), instead of the North Terminal (2).
The move means check in of all RJ passengers takes place in one terminal — the South — as RJ passengers traveling to North American destinations used to be checked in at the North Terminal.

http://i232.photobucket.com/albums/ee296/yazm1991/AMM056.jpg

The move is bound to facilitate travel and immigration procedures and granting boarding passes, particularly that the aircraft flying to the US and Canadian destinations always park on the ramp of the South Terminal. This will make it easier for passengers to reach the gates without having to cross to the other terminal passing through the Duty Free Shop. This also makes it easier for the long-haul Crown Class passengers, to use the newly built Crown Lounge. Currently, RJ is operating four weekly flights to New York, five to Chicago, two to Detroit and two to Montreal. In cooperation with American Airlines, RJ enables its passengers flying to American cities to use one ticket, at competitive prices, because of the two airlines' membership in the oneworld airline alliance.

Terminal Change at Frankfurt Airport

Starting April 1, 2009, passengers on board Royal Jordanian can check in at terminal 2 at Frankfurt airport instead of terminal 1 where RJ used to be located.

RJ President/CEO Samer Majali explained that this decision was taken because terminal 2 is modern and enjoys excellent infrastructure, and because all oneworld airline members run their operations from terminal 2, which makes it easier for oneworld passengers to get to flights connecting them to member carriers.

He added that for passengers coming from different cities in Germany onboard Air Berlin, the biggest domestic airline in Germany, it is now easier and faster to connect with RJ, as terminal 2 is smaller in size, which decreases the time needed for security procedures, check-in and the immigration process.

http://i232.photobucket.com/albums/ee296/yazm1991/2938691572_d8a96f7a2e.jpg

Majali said that this step will reflect positively on the company's workflow as the terminal is less congested. In addition, the Frankfurt airport management declared plans to implement huge construction works at terminal 1 in the coming two years.

Frankfurt airport is located in Frankfurt am Main, Germany, 12 km southwest of the city centre. Run by Fraport, it is by far the busiest airport in terms of passenger traffic in Germany, the third busiest in Europe and the ninth busiest worldwide, according to 2008 figures. If measured by the number of international destinations served, it can be considered the busiest airport in the world. It is also the busiest airport in Europe in terms of cargo traffic.
There are plans to expand Frankfurt Airport with a fourth runway and a new terminal, 3. The first modifications to make it Airbus A380 compatible have already been completed, including the first building of a large A380 maintenance facility. The work on the fourth runway has been delayed several times due to environmental concerns, but received zoning approval in December 2007. The runway could be in operation by 2010.

I've flown RJ 5 times between Amman-Beirut and 3 times MEA, and no joke the flights are totally full, no empty seats.

RJ flights to Beirut are also very cheap in comparison to Emirates and Qatar, so some people from the Gulf go on RJ via Amman to Beirut. The 4 daily flights also makes it very convenient for people who may work in Amman or Beirut.

RJ launches "Get To Know Your World" Competition

RJ will launch 'Get to know your world' competition on its website for the online visitors to explore the most famous tourism sites worldwide and give them the chance to win free tickets on board RJ aircraft, to travel to these places and get to know the capabilities of these unique sites.

http://i232.photobucket.com/albums/ee296/yazm1991/1241940310.jpg

Vice President/Marketing, Sales and Services Hussein Dabbas said that people wishing to participate in the competition can check the local daily newspapers.

Every Tuesday, the company will publish advertisements, each including a photo of a well-known landmark, from the very beginning of the competition and lasting for eight weeks. The participant recognizing the city where the monument is can enter the correct answer through the RJ website.

Dabbas added that an electronic raffle will take place every Monday to choose the winner of the week, who will get two confirmed free tickets on economy class. The tickets that will go to the winner and his companion are valid for a complete year from the draw date.

Dabbas said that the visitor to the RJ website (www.rj.com) will have to click on the banner of the competition placed on the homepage. It will then take him to the page where the tourist site appears. After being asked to recognize the city where this site is located, the participant will have to complete the rest of the procedures, among which answering four questions about Royal Jordanian and the services it offers its passengers.

Filling in his personal data, the participant is automatically entered in the weekly draw, which is done in the presence of representatives from the Ministry of Trade and Industry and RJ's Legal Affairs department.

RJ inaugurates direct service to Benghazi as of June 1

On June 1, Royal Jordanian will start operating a direct, regular, twice-weekly service between Amman and the Libyan city of Benghazi.

http://i232.photobucket.com/albums/ee296/yazm1991/67255_1240564724.jpg

It thus puts the destination back on its route network after around 30 years of suspended service. Benghazi was among the first Arab cities RJ began serving after its establishment in the 1960s.

RJ president/CEO Samer Majali will fly aboard the inaugural flight and will meet with the authorities of Benghazi International Airport to discuss means of facilitating travel and promoting the route. He said that operating flights to Benghazi comes in light of the growing traffic of Jordanian and Libyan citizens between the two countries. There is remarkable and active traffic of businessmen and students, and many Libyans come to Amman to get medical treatment.

He added that Royal Jordanian responded to this active travel between Jordan and Libya by also increasing the frequency of flights between Amman and Tripoli from three to four weekly, starting April 1.

Majali pointed out that Benghazi is the second new destination RJ adds to its network this year; Brussels is the first one, and the airline resumed its flights there on April 1. Along with these two destinations, RJ directly operates to 56 destinations spread on four continents, and more than 700 destinations with one stop served by oneworld's airline members, of which RJ is part. Benghazi will be an addition to the oneworld network, as RJ is the only airline member that serves this destination.

It has 1.5m inhabitants and is the second largest city in Libya after Tripoli, the Libyan capital, which lies 1,000 km west from Benghazi.

Important industries include oil refining, cement manufacturing, tanning, sponge and tuna fishing, and food processing such as dates and olives.

Benghazi airport lies 32 km to the east of the city, and connects the city with some foreign cities, as well as with major cities in Libya.

Well, looks like the A-340-200 (which has the range to do AMM-LAX non-stop) is not coming back or is going in for heavy checks (Victorville Aerospace maybe?)

I just saw the RJ advertisement in the local paper today which basically says:

Take advantage and fly with us direct to Los Angeles non-stop and for one flight only on 20.July.2009. Departing Monday from Amman at 2:00 and arriving Los Angeles at 8:00. Make sure you book your return flight from New York or Chicago on RJ to Amman direct.

Out of curiosity, I called the RJ reservation and inquired. The employee didn't know what the deal is with this flight except that it is on his system and bookable. So not much help there

RJ achieves JD7.7m net profits for the first half of the year

The Royal Jordanian Board of Directors chaired by Nasser Lozi approved in its July 29, 2009, session the financial results for the first half of 2009.
http://i232.photobucket.com/albums/ee296/yazm1991/57179_1248628087.jpg

RJ, the oneworld member, achieved net profits of around JD7.7m, against JD4m in net losses incurred during the same period of last year.

The gross profit reached around JD19m, against an operational loss of around JD3m for the comparison period.

Lozi expressed satisfaction with RJ's ability to achieve positive results despite the challenges the air transport industry has been facing over the last six months, foremost among them the global economic crisis, which had a great impact on the traffic of passengers and cargo over the world.

The revenues went down to JD274m, from JD314m that the airline attained in the first half of last year, marking a 12.7% decrease over last year.

RJ President/CEO Samer Majali said the profits came as a result of the decrease -19.6% in the operational costs of the company in the first six months of this year, exceeding the decline in revenues.

The cost control policy succeeded due to great efforts exerted in managing the offered aircraft seats, which decreased by 7%, to the efficient operation of the newly manufactured, economically operational aircraft that were added to the fleet in the past few years, and to the dramatic decrease in fuel prices.

He also pointed out that the decline in revenues in the first half of 2009 came as a result of the 6% decrease in the number of passengers aboard RJ aircraft and in the uplifted cargo, which went down by 33%.

Majali said that as a result of the lower fuel prices and the competition in the region, the airline reduced ticket fares leading to a decline in passenger yield by 9% and cargo yield by 10%.

He added that most of the company's operational indicators saw a drop during the aforementioned period, when the seat factor went down to 65 points this year, compared to the same period last year, which saw 71 points.

Majali said that the aviation sector, in general, and RJ, in particular, is facing big challenges, represented by sharp competition among the regional airlines and an increased number of aircraft seats, which is bound to result in lower ticket prices and therefore impact the company revenues.

However, he expressed optimism that RJ will achieve positive results at the end of the year and stressed that it is continuing its marketing efforts to attract more passengers at a time the company is witnessing a remarkable growth of passenger traffic on all its sectors this summer.

This year RJ added two new routes to its network; to Brussels and Benghazi. It also increased the frequency of daily flights to many of its regional destinations, like Beirut, Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Cairo, Jeddah, Aleppo and others.

Hussein Dabbas, president and chief executive of Royal Jordanian, succeeds Samer Majali

Royal Jordanian Board of Directors, chaired by Nasser Lozi, appointed in its July 29, 2009, session Hussein Dabbas president and chief executive officer of Royal Jordanian Airline, effective August 1, 2009, succeeding engineer Samer Majali who stepped down from Royal Jordanian, starting July 31, to become chief executive of Gulf Air, based in Bahrain.

http://i232.photobucket.com/albums/ee296/yazm1991/ayoneworldbus2-1.jpg

Lozi stressed that electing Dabbas, who is already a member of the RJ family and an expert in the civil aviation and the air transport industry, reflects the board's keenness to continue the company's strategy that targets development and comprehensive progress, followed ever since Majali took over the presidency of the airline in 2001.

During Majali's tenure as president/CEO, the airline witnessed continuous success when it comes to fleet modernization, route network, IT systems that improved services offered passengers and facilitated travel through Jordanian and international airports.

He said that the board of directors and RJ employees were confident that Dabbas' capability and wide practical and professional knowledge will help RJ achieve its goals and soar to new heights, enabling the airline to face the difficult times that the global economy is going through. Lozi pointed to the distinguished position RJ enjoys among international airlines who saw it fit to work side by side under the oneworld airline alliance.

Lozi extended to Dabbas his and the board's wishes of success in managing the national carrier of Jordan, emphasizing on the board's unconditional support to him, in the quest to attain the goals of the airline in the coming period.

He also expressed his heartfelt gratitude and thanks to Majali, for the fruitful, valuable efforts he exerted while president, during which RJ saw a real quantitative leap, placing RJ in the position it holds in the air transport industry.

Dabbas joined Royal Jordanian in 1979. He holds a master's degree in international management and marketing from Thunderbird School of Global Management, Arizona, and a bachelor of science in business administration from the University of San Francisco, California, USA.

Dabbas held several positions at RJ, particularly in the commercial and marketing sector, the last being vice president of marketing, sales and services, since 2005. He was head of the Marketing and Sales Department between 2001 and 2005, and assistant vice president for Passengers Sales and Marketing, between 1996 and 1999.

Between 1992 and 1996, Dabbas held the position of the general manager for the United States operation based in New York, and assistant vice president, marketing between 1989 and 1992.

Dabbas is board member of the Jordan Tourism Board, a member of the IATA Industry Affairs Committee, the RJ representative at the Arab Air Carriers Organization (AACO) commercial committee and the RJ representative at the oneworld commercial committee OMC. He is also a board member of Royal Wings charter airline, and head of the management committee of Royal Tours.

Dabbas was born in Amman in 1955. He is married with two children.

Royal Jordanian and S7 sign code share agreement

Royal Jordanian and Siberia airlines (S7), the largest domestic airlines in Russia, signed a unilateral Free Sale Code-share Agreement, where S7 will place its code on RJ flights operated on Amman-Domodedovo-Amman sector.

The agreement is to be implemented as of September 15, 2009.

RJ President/CEO Hussein Dabbas said:

"This is the first code-share agreement between S7 and a oneworld member since S7 was voted on board the alliance as a member elect, to join in 2010."

"RJ will operate Airbus A320s on this route, whereas the agreement applies on all types of aircraft operated by RJ on this sector," he added.

"The code-share agreement between RJ and S7 is a free flow agreement whereby S7 may sell as many seats on each Amman-Domodedovo-Amman flight as RJ, with no limitation to the number of seats sold by S7," he added.

Under the agreement, Royal Jordanian will operate three flights a week - on Tuesdays, Fridays and Sundays. Departure from Amman is scheduled at 10:45 and from Moscow Domodedovo at 16:35, local time.

Dabbas said that the two companies are planning to expand this code-share agreement in the near future, from unilateral to bilateral, once S7 gets necessary approvals on Moscow-St. Petersburg sector; RJ will also place its code on this sector.

This will offer new opportunities for passengers and boost the tourism, and it will serve the traffic of businessmen and students between Jordan and Russia.

S7, which was selected as a candidate to join the oneworld global alliance in May 2009, is now actively conducting work to integrate its operations and processes with other members of the alliance, in order to obtain full membership next year.

It also increased the frequency of daily flights to many of its regional destinations, like Beirut, Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Cairo, Jeddah, Aleppo and others.

oneworld airlines to move to Barcelona’s new Terminal 1 in September

All airline members of the oneworld® alliance serving Barcelona’s El Prat airport are to transfer their operations into its new Terminal 1 with effect from 9 September.
http://i232.photobucket.com/albums/ee296/yazm1991/3833386162_c2d335957c.jpg
Five of the alliance’s carriers serve the airport - Iberia along with its affiliate Iberia Regional Air Nostrum, American Airlines, British Airways, Finnair and Royal Jordanian.

Iberia’s value-based associate, Vueling, which is not part of oneworld, is also moving to Terminal 1 at the same time.

oneworld Vice-President Customer Experience and Airports Robert Antoniuk said: “oneworld’s airports strategy is to bring the operations of its member airlines together wherever it makes sense and where opportunities allow. The opening of this magnificent new facility at Iberia’s Group second home Barcelona provide just the ideal chance to do just that.”

The alliance’s airlines will have adjoining check-in desks among the terminal’s total of 166.

Details of lounge arrangements for premium passengers will be announced nearer to the date of the move.

With 101 boarding gates, 43 air bridges and more than a hundred shops, bars and restaurants, the terminal will be able to handle 30 million passengers a year, almost doubling the airport’s capacity.

To make it as environmentally friendly as possible, it has nearly 700 solar panels to generate power and completely automated regulation of its interior lighting.

September’s move follows the transfer of all oneworld member airlines’ seven airlines into the new EUR 6 billion Terminal 4 at Iberia’s main Madrid home in February 2006 and comes as the alliance’s eight on-line carriers at its biggest European hub, London Heathrow, complete later in the coming months their consolidation from across all five terminals into just two.

Royal Jordanian and JorAMCo open new chapter of cooperation

Royal Jordanian, the oneworld carrier, and the Jordan Aircraft Maintenance Company Limited (JorAMCo) announced on Oct. 18 that they were opening a new chapter of collaboration in heavy and basic maintenance, carried out in JorAMCo hangars at Queen Alia International Airport.

http://i232.photobucket.com/albums/ee296/yazm1991/87887-Dabbas.jpg

After signing the agreement with JorAMCo CEO Bashir Abdel Hadi, RJ President/CEO Hussein Dabbas expressed RJ's satisfaction at enhancing the growing strategic partnership with the maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO) service provider, of which RJ owns 20%, and the UAE's Abraj Capital owns 80%.

Dabbas also said that the agreement comes as a natural progression in the framework of special cooperation and business ties that bond the two companies. It stems from the long history and experience the two entities have been sharing, as JorAMCo was Royal Jordanian's Engineering and Maintenance Department prior to privatization in 2000.

He also highlighted RJ's confidence in JorAMCo's technical competence and qualified workforce, as the company enjoys international reputation in quality aircraft heavy and basic maintenance services.

Dabbas said that RJ, which operates a modern fleet of Airbus and Embraer aircraft and reaches 56 worldwide destinations, enjoys a reputable, clean record of flight safety in the world's aviation industry, an indicator of the efficient maintenance and overhaul services. He added that this partnership satisfies the main needs of Royal Jordanian, through JorAMCo's quality, safety and turnaround time (TAT).

Bashir Abdel Hadi said JorAMCo is delighted to have signed the agreement with the national carrier, which has long entrusted its basic maintenance requirements and component repair to JorAMCo under a historical and strategic relationship.

He added that JorAMCo is certified by the Jordanian Civil Aviation Regulatory Commission (JCARC) and by several regional and international aviation authorities, including USA Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and the European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA).

Abdel Hadi concluded that the Amman-based JorAMCo specializes in maintenance services on its 48,000-square-meter facilities and hangars at Queen Alia International Airport. Additionally, JorAMCo specializes in providing heavy maintenance support for a wide range of airframe types, including Airbus, Boeing and Embraer.

All-Jordanian female crew operates RJ flight

http://i232.photobucket.com/albums/ee296/yazm1991/CaptRabadi.jpg

October 20, 2009 (Amman-Jordan): Royal Jordanian flight number 132 landed safely on October 18 at Queen Alia International Airport, back from Athens. The novelty: the plane was led by Captain Carol Rabadi and co-pilot Hadeel Khamash, an all-women cockpit and cabin crew, thus recording a first for Jordanian and aviation history.
Since the establishment of RJ, two other women were awarded the same rank and flew, but with men pilots.

RJ Head of Flight Operations Captain Haitham Misto decorated Carol Rabadi with the four-stripe captain badge at a special ceremony arranged by the airline. The all-female crew consisting of six women, and a large number of local and Arab media representatives attended the ceremony.
Captain Rabadi said her first flight as captain, together with co-pilot Khamash will be a landmark in her life and the airline's history where women play a major role. She praised the support and training RJ gives its women employees who work in all the departments, including the operational and engineering sectors.

Rabadi underlined that her success in this career, which requires skill, accuracy and great responsibility, is also due to her colleagues' permanent encouragement during her training. At the same time, during the training, which included aviation sciences, Rabadi said she benefited from RJ, which holds the highest safety standards and commitment to international rules and regulations.

Captain Misto said that Royal Jordanian, a oneworld airline member, represents an advanced and sophisticated sector of the society and is a leading national company where men and women work side by side to operate safe and comfortable flights and offer distinguished services.

Royal Jordanian chooses Altéa Amadeus to manage passenger services systems

Royal Jordanian announced on October 21, 2009, it selected Amadeus Altéa Customer Management and ecommerce new suite of single technology platform solutions to manage its passenger services systems, including reservations, inventory and departure control. The airline will start implementing the solution starting with October 2010.

http://i232.photobucket.com/albums/ee296/yazm1991/Amadeusagreement.jpg

RJ President/CEO Hussein Dabbas said the IT partnership agreement with Amadeus IT comes in line with Royal Jordanian’s drive toward modernization and growth in the air transportation services.

Altea, a shared platform among partner airlines and among the carriers in the oneworld alliance, will strengthen the integration of these airlines and enhance passenger services, starting with booking and ending with boarding flights, which will result in better revenues, a strategic priority of the airline.

According to Dabbas, Royal Jordanian’s strategy is to invest constantly in improving its fundamental resources — modernising the fleet, enhancing the capacity of the human resources and adopting the latest industry technology — to achieve its objective of maintaining the competitive level it enjoys today in the airline industry.

Dabbas also said that early this year, and in support of the travel and tourism sector, the airline renewed its partnership with Galileo of Travelport to provide its partner travel agency sector with an advanced technology to serve its customers.

RJ has also recently introduced a new group revenue management system to enhance its services to tour operator agencies.
Dabbas added that RJ was awarded two world-class awards in the Information Technology field in the last two years.

Amadeus vice president, Airline IT, Julia Sattel, said that “Royal Jordanian is undertaking an impressive modernization program and we are delighted they have chosen Altéa solutions. Our strong presence in the global market will allow us to work closely with the airline to help maximize sales share and, thereafter, its revenues. By facilitating the airline’s operations among the oneworld alliance, Altéa will play a key role in enabling Royal Jordanian to execute its strategy and become a key player in the region.

Sattel added that today more than 60 airlines have chosen the full Altéa suite, while nearly 140 use at least one component of the solution.

RJ makes JD25.5m in net profits during the first nine months of the year

The Royal Jordanian Board of Directors chaired by Nasser Lozi approved in its October 28, 2009, session the financial results for the first nine months of 2009.

RJ achieved net profits of JD25.5m, against JD3.8m in net losses incurred during the same period of last year. The gross profit reached around JD40.7m, against the JD21.5m gross profits for the comparison period, marking an 89% increase.

The airline showed thus that it was capable of logging positive results despite the fact that operating revenues went down by 16%, from JD532m in the first nine months of 2008 to JD449m for the same period of 2009.

Lozi said that this drop in revenues stemmed from the challenges that the international air transport industry has been facing and the slump in passenger traffic due to the global economic crisis.

He also stressed the board of directors' confidence in the measures the airline management has been taking to leverage the outcome of the crisis. RJ, he added, has used a successful cost-control policy managed to cut the operational expenditures without affecting the level of air and ground services offered passengers. Moreover, the airline is in constant search of new means of boosting revenues.

The chairman of the board expressed optimism that RJ will end up this year with satisfying results.

RJ President/CEO Hussein Dabbas expressed appreciation for the board of directors' support for the airline endeavors to upgrade services, improve its situation and overcome the effects of the economic crisis.

He pointed out that the profits came as a result of the decrease in fuel expenses in the past nine months, by 50% of the fuel bill the airline paid during the comparison period in 2008. Additionally, the airline exerted continuous efforts to reduce the operational costs by 20% and the available seat kilometers (ASKs) by 4% during this period.

Dabbas said the drop in revenues is due to the 3% decrease in the number of passengers using RJ aircraft and the 32% drop in uplifted cargo.

He added that because of the competition witnessed in the region, the airline reduced ticket fares, leading to a 14% drop in passenger yield; the drop was from JD216 in the first nine months of 2008 to JD185 in the comparison period this year.

The RJ president said that the decline in passenger traffic led to a drop in the key performance indicators during the above-mentioned period, when the seat factor went down by 8% to reach 67 points this year, compared to the same period last year, which witnessed 73 points. The load factor also went down from 55 points to 49 points, marking an 11% drop. However, the number of departures rose by 5% and of flying hours by 4%, due to the modifications to available seat kilometers.

Dabbas stressed that RJ will spare no effort to control costs, increase revenues and open new markets to boost its presence regionally and internationally, making a reality of its vision of becoming the airline of choice connecting Jordan and the Levant with the world.

That, he said, will be achieved due to the distinguished features RJ enjoys: a young fleet of aircraft, modern technological systems, a network of direct routes to 56 international destinations and a broader network covered by the oneworld airline alliance that reaches to more than 700 points around the world.

Royal Jordanian to decide on possible 777 or A330 lease
26/10/09

Royal Jordanian Airlines is intending to decide within a couple of months whether to lease Boeing 777-200 or Airbus A330-200 aircraft as a replacement for its Airbus A310s.

It is considering acquiring three aircraft, on three- or four-year leases, to carry out a one-for-one replacement.

Royal Jordanian's new chief executive, Hussein Dabbas, detailed the plan to Air Transport Intelligence during the Arab Air Carriers Organization conference in Jeddah.

He says the airline has had to rethink its interim fleet strategy after the delays to the Boeing 787 programme, which have pushed back Royal Jordanian's deliveries to 2013.

Dabbas says the airline is "in discussions with Boeing and Airbus, and lessors" over a possible 777 or A330 lease, adding that the alternative is to retain the three passenger A310s for a longer period.

The carrier is already planning to refurbish the interiors on its A340 long-haul fleet from September-October 2010, having signed an agreement with Sicma.

Royal Jordanian is planning a route to Mosul next year, expanding further its services to Iraq, as well as the holy city of Medina in Saudi Arabia. Dabbas also identifies Johannesburg as a candidate destination for the airline.

BREAKING NEWS

Royal Jordanian plans airline merger

Royal Jordanian’s new CEO has said that the airline will merge with another carrier within the next two years, in order to expand and grow its operations.

Speaking to arabiansupplychain.com, RJ CEO Hussein Dabbas, who succeeded Samer Majali in June, said that because of the impact of the economy on the aviation market, consolidation was the only way forward for the airline.

“We need to merge with another airline in order to grow, and we will explore this option next year.”

Dabbas did not rule out the possibility of Royal Jordanian merging with a European airline.

http://i232.photobucket.com/albums/ee296/yazm1991/n594005230_5564771_6815.jpg

“We would like to find an airline that fits our ambitions. It is too early to say and we would need to see which airlines would be interested, but we would consider merging with a European carrier.

“In order to grow we need to create synergies, and share operational costs, such as fuel sharing and catering costs, etc.”

Although Dabbas was playing his cards close to his chest on the finer details of the merger plan, he did say that the airline would need to move fast on setting up a viable alliance with another carrier, as regional airlines were facing stiff competition from mergers that had occurred this year.

“Lufthansa is buying basically all of central Europe’s airlines and it will be a formidable competitor to all carriers in the Middle East.

“Consolidation is the future and we will use alliances as a means of facilitating travel.”

RJ would still the national carrier for Jordan. Same colours, same name, same everything. The only difference would be that they would buy fuel, food and equipment together with their partner. But in doing so may risk being asked to leave oneworld unless the airline they merge with is also a memeber.

It seems that RJ is more keen on merging with an Middle-East airline...I don't think it will be the likes of Emirates, Qatar or Etihad maybe MEA, Gulf Air or Oman Air.

Dabbas also identifies Johannesburg as a candidate destination for the airline.

http://www.flightglobal.com/articles/2009/10/26/333797/royal-jordanian-to-decide-on-possible-777-or-a330-lease.html

The Airbus 330 will fit RJ's fleet better with the commonality of the 319,320,321 and the 340. Reduces costs of maintenance and training. Although a fantastic aircraft, the 777 is larger and will be too much metal for RJ. Neverthless, Boeing might offer an attractive lease contract for 777s to compensate for the late delivery of the 787.

Competly agree with this, RJ has always been an "Airbus Airline". And when they ordered the 787's many were shocked. But at the end of they day the RJ colour scheme will look great on either aircraft. :D

Embraer weighing suitable location for spare parts warehouse in Mideast

AMMAN - Embraer, the third largest aircraft manufacturer, is planning to establish a warehouse for spare parts in the region, according to Jose Luis Molina, the vice president for Europe, Africa and the Middle East - airline market.

http://i232.photobucket.com/albums/ee296/yazm1991/1147199.jpg

Speaking at a press conference on Wednesday, he said the warehouse will serve four air carriers which are currently operating Embraer commercial aircraft, including Royal Jordanian Airlines (RJ), as well as owners of Embraer executive jets in the region.

In addition to RJ, Egyptair, Saudia and Nasair are currently operating Embraer aircraft, flying 162 routes.

Regarding the warehouse headquarters in the Middle East, Molina said the company is carefully examining where to locate it. It could be in Amman, Abu Dhabi, Dubai or in any other city, he said, pointing out that Embraer operators in the Middle East region currently have to purchase and transport spare parts from France.

On the advantages of Embraer commercial jets, Molina indicated that in aviation, flying an empty seat is expensive, highlighting Embraer’s right sizing and more frequencies philosophy as a means to maximise airlines’ profit.

Addressing the press, RJ President/CEO Hussein Dabbas said: “We are not out of the slump yet. If conditions improve, Royal Jordanian Airlines will consider the purchase of two Embraer aircraft in the coming two-three years.”

“We need to continue to add frequencies. That’s why we are examining the acquisition of two Embraer aircraft,” he added, pointing that RJ has seven Embraer aircraft at present.

Despite the economic slowdown, RJ managed to post JD25 million in profit at the end of this year’s third quarter, Dabbas indicated.

Underlining the importance of the Middle East aviation market, Embraer’s Byron Bolhman said most of the countries in the region have not been affected by the fall out of the global financial crisis, in terms of the growth in gross domestic product in particular.

Most of these countries’ economies depend on oil, he elaborated, adding that the Middle East continues to represent a strategic market for the aircraft manufacturing company.

On the increasing need for E-jets, he said these aircraft provide speed, privacy, security and productivity, reiterating that time is money. New orders for executive jets maybe announced during Dubai Airshow, which will be held between November 15 and 19.

Addressing the issue of economic recovery, Bolhman said there is still risk of a W-shaped economy. It seems there is a rebound at present, but it is not certain yet whether it is going to continue like that or there will be another fall, he added. Embraer has been affected by the downturn, he said, noting that the company is in control.

“We are in a good shape in comparison with other big manufacturers,“ he told The Jordan Times.

With high annual rates of growth, Royal Jordanian continues to develop steadily as one of the world's fastest expanding air carriers, taking into account its keenness to sustain development and protect the environment. The national airlines is currently operating daily flights to over 56 destinations worldwide, extending its fleet of modern aircrafts.

It is worth mentioning that Royal Jordanian was the first Arab airline to join an airline alliance by joining oneworld Alliance in 2007, which offers a wide range of unique air travel options and benefits by bringing together ten of the world's biggest and best airlines.

The Amman Stand-Up Comedy Festival was held for the first time last year, from December 2 until December 6, 2008, constituting the first step of its kind in the Middle East and, indeed, the Arab world. The Festival attracted almost three thousand Jordanians and Arabs, all of whom interacted with and highly appreciated the many comic performances.

RJ still considering plans over Boeing 787 delay.

RJ is expected to make a decision before the end of 2009 in regards to huge delays of the Boeing 787. Currently RJ is looking at 3 options:

1. Renting a couple of A330's until the 787's arrive
2. Renting a couple of Boeing 777's until the 787's arrive
3. Refurbish the A340's

These delays have caused RJ many problems and have ruined both short term and long term plans for the Middle East airline.

RJ signs agreement with Haddadinco for the finishing new headquarters

Royal Jordanian and Haddadinco Engineering Company for Contracting (Haddadinco) signed an agreement, whereby Haddadinco is to execute the third, and final, package of the new Royal Jordanian headquarters, which includes electromechanical and finishing works.

RJ President/CEO Hussein Dabbas, who signed the agreement on behalf of RJ with Haddadinco Vice President Salim Haddadin, expressed satisfaction with the fact that the bid was won by this leading contracting company for the second time during the project phases, as Haddadinco was the executor of the second phase, which involved the skeleton of the new headquarters.

Dabbas said that the implementation of the third phase will last 400 calendar days, starting with December 1 this year.

Haddadinco Vice President Salim Haddadin said that the company pledges to execute the electromechanical and finishing works according to the high standards and quality.

He also thanked the companies that participated in completing the second phase, which are Projacs International and Arabtech Jardaneh.

The project, located in the heart of the capital Amman, near the 5th Circle, comprises two buildings: one that consists of eight floors, and the other of three floors, in addition to three basement floors. The two buildings are connected by a number of bridges and a special internal main spine (atrium). It curves around 15 degrees outwards to reflect an aviation-related construction.

The overall built-up area will be constructed on 7,000 m2 of land, with the remaining 2,000 m2 allocated for landscaping. It will be distinctive with its outstanding façades, glass louvers and stone, reflecting a mixture of modern and traditional Jordanian culture.

RJ helps visually impaired to achieve dream

Royal Jordanian sponsored a program whereby visually impaired Jordanian Mazen Qutaishat was granted, at the end of last year, a fully equipped travel and tourism office in Abdali area. President/CEO Hussein Dabbas launched the office in the presence of several travel agents, local media representatives and some of the RJ management members.

Royal Jordanian gave Qutaishat the opportunity to have the first travel office in the country equipped with the Braille system.

Dabbas said Qutaishat deserved to be supported because of his great desire and ambition, and that Royal Jordanian will continue to sponsor and support him.

This initiative was taken because the airline believes in its responsibility to interact with and service various groups of the community, especially people with special needs, Dabbas stressed.

Over the past year, Royal Jordanian trained Qutaishat at home on the Galileo system, to be able to work in a travel agency. It also adapted the reservation system to Braille, for him to be able to book and issue tickets like any other travel agent in Jordan.

At the ceremony, which saw Dabbas cut the ribbon, signaling the opening of the office, Qutaishat gave a presentation, using Braille for reservation. Dabbas expressed satisfaction and pride in his ability and skills, stressing that Royal Jordanian supports all travel agents who are partners in the field.

Qutaishat warmly thanked Dabbas and the management and expressed appreciation for the technical and financial support provided by the airline, which, he said, helped him achieve a dream.

Qutaishat plays 16 instruments and is apt at using modern communication techniques, including the Internet and the cellular phone.

He makes no mistake in booking, despite the precision required by the endeavor, because he translates whatever he hears in his own hand, to effect booking accurately and quickly.

Dec.15 marks 46 years of establishing the national carrier of Jordan

Dec. 15, 2009 marks the 46th anniversary of Royal Jordanian, a company etablished by a decree issued by His Majesty King Hussein in 1963 to be the national carrier, with the aim of contributing to developing and promoting services, creating better ties with the world, promoting interaction with other cultures and establishing relations with other nations.

For the last decades, this leading company has continuously progressed, living up to its role as the country’s flag carrier, maintaining its identity, history and culture. RJ still performs this role, under the invaluable guidance and directives of His Majesty King Abdullah II, who spares no effort in lending his support to the airline. Thus, RJ continues its strides by renewing its fleet and expanding its route network and operations, enabling it to contribute to boosting the position of Jordan as the main gateway to the Middle East.

Comparing the results of the first year of its establishment and those estimated for 2009, it can be seen that the number of passengers increased from 87,000 in 1964 to an estimated 2.667 million at the end of this year. The number of flights grew to reach 35,628 this year, in comparison to 4,193 in 1964. Moreover, the number of aircraft rose from two to 29, and RJ’s destinations from three to 56.

Financially, the company's revenues were JD1 million in 1964, expecting them to reach JD574 million in the 2009 fiscal year. A large increase could be observed in employees’ productivity, from JD4,000 in the year of establishment to JD134,000 per employee this year.

Royal Jordanian was transformed into a public shareholding company fully owned by the government on Feb. 5, 2001. Its capital rose to today's JD84.4 million.

In December 2007, the Jordanian government floated around 60% of the shares for underwriting, representing 71% of the total issued share capital, keeping 29% of the shares. RJ shares started trading on the Amman Stock Exchange on Dec. 17, 2007. At that time, Jordanians owned approximately 56.2% of the shares which increased to today's 68%.

Nowadays, RJ employs 4,300 people in Jordan and at its outstations around the world, distinguished through their professionalism and expertise. They operate a modern fleet of aircraft, including Airbus A310, A319, A320, A321, A340, Embraer 195 and Embraer 175 aircraft.

In March 2009, Royal Jordanian concluded the modernization program of its short- and medium-haul fleet, whereby RJ introduced 19 newly manufactured airliners and designated names of Jordanian cities on the new aircraft as part of its mission of promoting Jordan to the world.

In this year, a new commercial service was introduced on two Airbus A319s to enable RJ passengers to stay connected while in flight, using mobile phones to make and receive calls, exchange text and multimedia messages. It also allows passengers to send e-mails and access the Internet through smartphones or any other mobile phone equipped with the GPRS service.

Regarding the modernization program of the long-haul fleet, the airline selected the wide-body Boeing 787 Dreamliner as a replacement aircraft for its long-range Airbus A340s and A310s operating to the United States, Canada and the Far East. It placed its order to introduce about 12 Boeing 787s under the airline's long-haul fleet modernization program.

The first B787 was scheduled to join the fleet in 2010 however it was delayed until the beginning of 2013, a Boeing decision. Negotiations are going on with Boeing to compensate RJ for this delay.

Networkwise, the airline opened new services to Brussels and Benghazi in 2009, bringing the airline's destations to 56, and it will add Madinah Munawwarh in Saudi Arabia next April. In order to cater to the demand, RJ is considering expanding its route network by adding new destinations during the coming three years.

In view of its reputation and international level of competitiveness, Royal Jordanian officially joined the oneworld airline alliance in 2007. RJ is thus the first Arab and regional air carrier selected to join any of the three global airline alliances.

RJ's membership in oneworld, along with the other 10 members and their 20 affiliates, represent 8,500 daily flights operated to more than 750 points in 150 countries. The oneworld member airlines operate 2,500 aircraft, carrying around 330 million passengers yearly. They attain annual revenues reaching USD100 billion.

In light of the airline's modernization and development policy, RJ introduced several advanced, state-of-the-art systems, linking up with the oneworld airline members; the most significant are the electronic ticketing and the departure control systems, the Internet booking, the frequent flyer program (Hitit), the revenue management system (PROS) and a new group revenue management and the revenue accounting (Sirax) systems.

Other IT systems were also implemented to make it easier for passengers to deal with all travel procedures, like the advanced boarding pass and Common Use Self Service check-in system (CUSS). Additionally, the airline opened a 24/7 Call Centre, which offers RJ customers from all over the world reservation services, information regarding the frequent flyer program, flight schedules, luggage and ticket fares. Royal Jordanian provides competitive ticket prices and valuable offers to give wider choices to passengers.

In recognition of the RJ achievements in the last few years, Royal Jordanian won six world-class awards, five of which are granted to the air transport industry and one national. It was awarded the Merit Award for the Airline Turnaround of the Year 2006 at the 3rd Annual Asia Pacific and Middle East Aviation Outlook Summit, and the Phoenix Award presented by Air Transport World magazine (ATW).

RJ was nominated the winner of the Airline Strategy Award in the technology category organized by Airline Business magazine in 2007. At the beginning of 2008, Royal Jordanian was granted the “Airline of the Year 2007” award, following a study performed by Air Finance Journal. And in April this year, the airline was awarded the Air Cargo Award of Excellence in the Air Carrier category.

It also won King Abdullah II Award for Excellence in the large service organizations category. The award is considered the most prestigious reward for excellence at national level, for all sectors.

Royal Jordanian CEO Hussein Dabbas maps out the company's future.

With 30 years experience at Royal Jordanian under his belt, you would think that Hussein Dabbas would be oozing confidence in his new position as president and CEO. Having worked in nearly every department at RJ since joining the airline in 1979, he was the obvious choice to take over from current Gulf Air chief, Samer Majali.

The handover took place in June this year and at the time, Dabbas saw the job offer as a great opportunity, but fast forward five months and he remains realistic as to the challenges that lie ahead.

"It was my luck to have been chosen by the board, but I believe I am taking over during very difficult times; difficult times for the entire airline industry. I need to work very hard to adapt the business to withstand the economic challenges we face."

Despite his anxieties, Dabbas is well-prepared to deal with any unexpected surprises. In 2002, he was part of the team that built the airline's current strategy; low-cost, high yield routes that have established the airline's form of travel we are familiar with today.

"We focus on a three-pronged approach - the home market, the support market and the external market. Home is the Levant; Syria, Lebanon, Iraq and this is the core of the operation." Back then, RJ changed the whole concept of air travel in the region by offering multi-frequencies - small airplanes covering small airports - "this is why we opted to get the Embraer aircraft added to our fleet," Dabbas explains. "Back then, multi-frequency routes were almost unheard of in the Middle East, but by increasing frequencies we generated new business, and continue to do so today."

The airline now operates multi-frequency routes to destinations such as Beirut, Dubai, Alexandria and Sharm El Sheikh, but it is by operating services to Iraq where it has established itself as the market leader.

In 1970, RJ's inaugural flight to Baghdad left its home base at Queen Alia International Airport. Since then, it has launched scheduled services to three additional Iraq destinations; Basra, Erbil and Sulaymaniyah, and the airline is busy conducting market research to begin operations to Musel.

But 2009 has been a year for rival airlines to re-enter the Iraqi market. Ironically it has been Gulf Air, under Majali's leadership, that has implemented the most aggressive re-entry programme into the country. To date, the Bahrain-based carrier has launched flights to three Iraq cities in as many months, and two more destinations are expected to be announced before the end of the year. So is Dabbas worried by his former boss's latest moves?

"Look, it helps the market to grow when new airlines enter markets. It is part of the business. It makes life more difficult, but keeps us on our toes."

He is also quick to point out that RJ maintained its services to Iraq when other airlines were swiftly exiting the market. "If you don't take risks then you don't do business. It was an expensive risk. At the beginning, we were not even allowed to operate our own planes, so we had to wet-lease planes to operate. This was during the times when the Iraq operation was very foggy and we didn't know how secure the passengers would really be."

But all that has changed and RJ has been instrumental in establishing Iraq as a key destination. "We used Jordan as a gateway to the country and brought about a major transformation in the quality of services, timings and rates," Dabbas explains.

IBA Group aviation expert Usman Ahmed says the airline should continue on this path.

"By connecting local and regional destinations it can tap into both the transit and tourism market.

"Royal Jordanian has one distinct advantage; that it can save passengers up to two hours by transiting through Amman."

But, while Iraq remains of importance to RJ's business, its new CEO is currently scrutinising other segments of the company too.

In 2004, RJ began to make a profit. Under Majali's leadership the airline had been privatised and the good times were to continue until 2007. But 12 months later, the airline incurred a net loss of JD3.8 million (US$5.4 million) due to its fuel hedging policy.

"Last year, most airlines took a slap from their fuel hedging policies," Dabbas explains. "All indications were it would rise to $200 barrel, but when it was $145 we were all running around like headless chickens trying to find solutions.

"But we anticipated the crash of the oil prices and the level we have now is very feasible for both the consumer and the airline." Add to that a struggling economy and the airline has done well to record a net profit of JD25.5 million ($36 million) in the first nine months of this year, helped, in part, to a 20% reduction in operational costs.

"We cut capacity and frequency on some flights and sent airplanes to hangars for C-checks, but when demand dropped we had to see what could be done to ensure seats were being sold at the right price." But, unfortunately, many airlines did the same, and RJ was forced to slash its ticket fares, leading to a 14% drop in passenger yield.

"The Middle East has remained particularly strong throughout this year and the market was, and still is, vibrant. Where we took a beating was on the Far East routes. Yields fell through the floor, and it was the same story for North Atlantic routes."

But cutting capacity is just one method to bring the airline into order, says IBA Group's Ahmed. "Royal Jordanian needs to assess other areas of operations; such as ground operations, network, services contracts, suppliers, lease contracts and maintenance operations. These must be reviewed on a regular basis to ensure the best possible deal. Most importantly RJ needs to achieve high levels of staff efficiency to stay above the water in the current economic conditions."

So, what about job cuts? On his exit, RJ's former CEO, Majali admitted that he had made some 500 employees redundant in his last remaining weeks. But Dabbas, it seems, does not have the same methodology. "I'm not here to chop heads and deprive people of livelihoods. I have not initiated any job cancellations since I took over as CEO, although we are not hiring new staff either. But I have told employees that I am here to improve the business productivity and I encourage people to save paper and turn off lights."

So where to next? Dabbas says the airline has exhausted the region in terms of new route launches, and he will continue to re-examine the airline's strategy.

"We have to look at where we want to be by 2012, 2015 and 2020; we need to be creative, assess our successes and change what is lacking."

But the business strategy doesn't end there. Dabbas has concerns that the current expansion project at Queen Alia International Airport will not fulfill his ambitions for RJ.

With just 14 bridges opening in 2013, the infrastructure falls far short of the 26-28 bridges Dabbas anticipates will be needed. As a consequence, he plans to fully exploit the airlines affiliation with the oneworld alliance and the airline will soon be codesharing with Cathay Pacific, and on routes to London with British Airways. But it is merger plans that Dabbas is keen to discuss.

"We need to merge with another airline in the region in order to grow, and we will explore this option next year."

But Ahmed warns that mergers can bring many challenges.

"Internal management needs to adapt to complement working ethics. In addition, fare structures and network optimisation can become key issues.

"The biggest challenge for any airline will always be its competition. At least by merging, RJ will have one less competitor and gain a partner." And when it comes to finding a partner, Dabbas says he would consider looking to airlines in Europe.

"We would like to find an airline that fits our ambitions and we would not rule out the possibility of partnering with a European carrier.

"We have had our peaks and valleys and I won't deny that the economic slowdown has made us think that we cannot carry on the business alone, but consolidation is the future and we will use alliances as a means of facilitating travel."

Royal Jordanian Airlines deploys PROS' advanced revenue management technology

Royal Jordanian Airlines and PROS Revenue Management, L.P., announce that Royal Jordanian Airlines is deploying a new suite of Network Revenue Management Systems from PROS- a world leader of pricing and revenue optimization science and software. The system is scheduled to be implemented in the fourth quarter of 2010.

Marking a new milestone in Royal Jordanian's commitment to growth and continual adoption of state-of-the-art technology, the Airline will implement the PROS Origin-and-Destination Business Solution. The centerpiece of this solution, the PROS O&D Revenue Management System, will maximize network revenue by optimizing the price mix of passenger flows across RJ's burgeoning hub in Amman.

Complementing this solution will be PROS Real-Time Dynamic Pricing (RTDP), which enables RJ to infuse commercial strategies and business tactics into the system's automated process to enhance revenue quality. In addition, the PROS O&D Group System will round out the solution to optimize group traffic and network seat utilization. The entire solution will be integrated seamlessly with Royal Jordanian's passenger service system platform.

"This deployment perfectly underscores our recent commitment to increasing revenues. With our increasingly broad network, it is imperative that we employ sophisticated technology to make the most of our opportunities. The PROS solutions have demonstrated their effectiveness at managing these kinds of real-world circumstances, and we believe PROS is best suited to deliver tangible results,"

said Royal Jordanian President/CEO Hussein Dabbas.

Guido Ruther, Chief Commercial Officer-, said, "Royal Jordanian is distinguished by several attributes, including a modern aircraft fleet, a network of 57 direct international routes, and the broader oneworld alliance network that extends our network to more than 700 destinations globally. Our business model requires the support of state-of-the-art technology and Royal Jordanian prides itself on employing the best solutions available. The PROS solutions clearly fit that profile. We are confident that these systems — and the company behind them will help us achieve our strategic initiatives."

In welcoming this decision from Royal Jordanian Airlines, PROS Senior Vice President, Business Development, Benson Yuen said, "With Royal Jordanian's unique advantages and their strong, clear-sighted leadership, they are well positioned to gain the greatest benefit from the proven technology and business processes PROS provides. Forging this partnership with Royal Jordanian has been both an honor and a pleasure."

Royal Jordanian focuses on regional jet links feeding long-haul flights to West

New Royal Jordanian chief executive Hussein Dabbas aims to continue his predecessor's plan to make the recently privatised flag-carrier the "airline of choice" between the Levant (eastern Mediterranean) and the west by focusing on multi-frequency regional jet services feeding long-haul flights, mostly to Europe and North America, from Amman.

The oneworld airline has used its five Embraer 195s and two 175s to increase services to cities such as Beruit, Cairo and Aleppo to several a day. It has also all but abandoned efforts to compete with the big names on routes to Asia, a tactic that forced the airline to discount and lose money over a long period, says Dabbas, a 30-year Royal Jordanian veteran who took over from Samer Majali in August, after Majali had moved to run Gulf Air.

"We were pioneers of taking people through Amman to the Far East, but were selling to the cheapest customers and it wasn't profitable," he says. "New airlines were mushrooming in the Gulf with a lot of money and investing in new equipment. We don't have that privilege."

Instead, Royal Jordanian - a rare Arab airline that serves Israel as well as its neighbours - is targeting the Levant's 120 million or so population and its diaspora in Europe, Canada and the USA, with much of its Asian market now served through codeshares.

"Rather than trying to take the passenger from Amsterdam through Amman to Bangkok, we are focusing on Amsterdam to Amman to Beruit," says Dabbas. "Jordan's good relationships with all the surrounding countries is an advantage for us. It means we can take, for example, the guy who wants to go from Aleppo [in Syria] to Montreal more comfortably than if he had to make two long-haul flights through a European hub."

The previously government-owned airline, which was floated through an initial public offering in December 2007, has also had an image makeover, says Dabbas. "We have worked aggressively on improving our in-flight product. We had an advertising campaign based on the fact that we are changing. There were people before who wouldn't touch us with a ten-foot pole."

Dabbas says Royal Jordanian - which joined oneworld in April 2007 - has withstood the effects of the downturn relatively well, with year-to-date passenger numbers 3% lower and revenues down 18%.

Royal Jordanian had planned to start replacing its largely Airbus A340 and A310 long-haul fleet with 12 Boeing 787s from next year, but delays to the programme have forced it to look at refurbishing its A340s and even replacing the Dreamliners completely with A330s or Boeing 767s. "We are still committed to the 787, but this has screwed up our plans big time," says Dabbas.

RJ’s exclusive rights to operate regular flights with other countries expire

Royal Jordanian’s (RJ) exclusive rights to operate regular flights between the Kingdom and other countries expired as of Friday after an eight-year-operational privileges provided to the national carrier came to an end. According to Suleiman Obeidat, the chief commissioner of the Civil Aviation Regulatory Commission (CARC), the exclusivity deal given by the government to RJ in 2002 aimed at boosting RJ financial and operational performance and increasing its competitiveness to attract more investments.

He added that ending the exclusivity rights is to keep in pace with the world’s open skies policy. Airline companies licensed to operate scheduled flights can carry out flights to any routes but have to meet CARC operational regulations, he added, stating that the annulment of RJ exclusive rights will offer more options for passengers in addition to encouraging airliners to improve their services. There are only two firms licensed to operate regular flights, the Royal Wings and the Royal Falcon, while the Jordan Aviation company is in the process of licensing, Obeidat noted.

Royal Jordanian to open regular, scheduled route to Madinah Munawwarh

On March 28 this year, Royal Jordanian will inaugurate regular direct flights to Madinah Munawwarh, Saudi Arabia, with initial two weekly flights.

http://i232.photobucket.com/albums/ee296/yazm1991/4327579906_4206726c24_o.jpg

President/CEO Hussein Dabbas said that opening this route is an advantage to RJ passengers who wish to visit Saudi Arabia for Hajj and Umrah.

He pointed out that pilgrims normally wish to pass by Madinah Munawwarh and visit Prophet Mohammed tomb and religious places before heading to perform Hajj and Umrah rites.

He added that the route will facilitate it before pilgrims instead of visiting Madinah Munawwarh via Jeddah airport or by land.

He stressed that the feasibility study the airline carried out shows that the service is bound to see success in serving Jordanian passengers and transit passengers from all around the world who wish to visit Saudi Arabia via Amman.

Royal Jordanian flight will depart from Amman at 23:00 Sundays and Wednesdays, and will arrive in Madinah Munawwarh at 00:45 am. It will depart from Madinah Munawwarh Mondays and Thursdays at 1:45 am and reach Amman at 3:30 am.

Dabbas added that the airline directly operates to 56 destinations around the world, in addition to other 750 destinations served by RJ partners in the oneworld airline alliance.

Studies are being conducted to open new routes such as Kuala Lampur, Johannesberg, Tehran, Izmir, Luxor, Aswan and others.

Madinah Munawwarh currently has a population of more than 1.5 million people. It is 340 km north of Mecca and about 190 km from the Red Sea coast.

AIG boasts achievements

AMMAN - The Airport International Group (AIG)Airport International Group (AIG) announced Tuesday that Queen Alia International Airport (QAIA)Queen Alia International Airport (QAIA) was able to weather the 2008 and 2009 challenging years for the aviation and tourism industries.

AIGAIG Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Curtis Grad told reporters yesterday during a press tour, that the volume of passengers reached almost 4.5 million in 2008, up 16 per cent from the previous year.

"Traffic in 2009 was also strong as the number of passengers shot up more than 4.7 million, up by 6.5 per cent over 2008," Grad said.

He attributed the growth in the traffic performance to the introduction of new routes and airlines operators as well as increased frequencies on existing routes.

Carriers contributing to the flight increases included Royal Jordanian, Austrian Airlines, Malev, Fly DubaiFly Dubai, Bahrain Air, Watanya and Emirates, according to a statement issued by the AIGAIG which was established in 2007 following a government decision to expand and revolutionise the services offered at QAIA.

"Also, the airport's charter traffic contributed to 2009 growth with new seasonal services including Hamburg International, Livingston, Air Mediterranean, Blue Panorama and Neosair," the statement said.

According to the CEO, the AIG consortium of international investors entrusted with the expansion, rehabilitation and operation of QAIA has spent JD200 million up to date.

The $750 million project is growing according to plan and will be ready for operation in spring 2012, Grad indicated, noting that after the completion of construction work in the new terminal the airport's capacity will jump to nine million passengers annually, from its current level of 3.5 million.

"AIG is committed to securing QAIA's position as the airport of choice in the region," Grad stressed.

By September, passengers will start to use part of the new terminals for departure and arrival, Grad said, describing the site as "state-of-the-art terminal building".

Noting that the consortium was awarded the project under a 25-year concession agreement following an extensive international competition, AIG COO Francois Beristo said 97 per cent of AIGAIG employees are Jordanian, some of whom are in the senior positions now.

After the completion of the project, the Jordanian staff would takeover the operation completely, Grad said.

RJ profits reach JD28.6m in 2009

Royal Jordanian (RJ) announced Monday in a press release that the airline achieved a JD28.6 million net profit, in spite of the challenges that the air transport industry faced last year, most significantly the global economic crisis and its impact on passenger travel and cargo.

Chairman Nasser Lozi expressed the board's satisfaction with the positive results saying they reflect the airline's ability to make the best use of available resources, in spite of their limitations, and to continue its fleet modernisation programme besides automating and facilitating travel procedures.

President/Chief Executive Officer Hussein Dabbas said operational revenues fell by 15 per cent from JD700 million in 2008 to JD598 million in 2009, “due to the impact of the global economic crisis on travel and tourism in the world and also to a remarkable regression in cargo.”

According to audited financial statements, operational costs went down by 19.1 per cent from JD675 million in 2008 to JD546.8 million in 2009, basically due lower fuel prices globally. As a result, the fuel bill of the company was cut by 47 per cent to JD136 million in 2009.

“Additionally, the cost control policy and the capacity management played key roles in achieving positive results,” RJ said in the press statement.

Dabbas indicated that gross profit in 2009 shot up 109 per cent to JD52.1 million against JD24.9 million last year. Consequently, the airline attained net profit of JD28.6 million, against a JD24.7 million net loss in 2008.

He also indicated that shareholders equity in the company increased from JD78 million to JD106 million at the end of 2009, and the share book value became JD1.26 compared to JD0.92 at the end of 2008.

Dabbas said in 2009, the oneworld carrier (RJ) transported 2.7 million passengers, 1 per cent less than in 2008, and the passenger yield declined by 13 per cent due to lower ticket prices in response to the drop in oil prices and the sharp competition with other airlines.

Flight frequencies and flying hours went up by 4 per cent each, whereas air freighting declined by 27 per cent compared to 2008.

“The international civil aviation, in general, and Royal Jordanian, in particular, are facing big challenges, including the competition among regional carriers in regard of the increase in the offered seats and reduction in ticket prices, thus affecting the revenues that the company will register in the coming period,” the chief executive officer said.

He added that in 2010, RJ will focus on facing new challenges, particularly in light of the annulment of the route exclusivity in February this year, which RJ enjoyed on all its regular routes.

“Efforts should be exerted to maintain and boost the position of RJ as a leading company in the local and regional air transportation,” he stressed.

He pointed out that the airline has applied state-of-the-art IT systems during the last two years, such as electronic ticketing, Internet booking, self-service check-in at the airport and revenue management.

The press statement concluded that the airline undertook extensive marketing activities to enhance its market share in various regions of the world.

Lozi sees challenging 2010 for Royal Jordanian

Royal Jordanian (RJ) Chairman Nasser Lozi described 2010 as a challenging year for the airline.

According to an RJ press release, he told the company’s 46th Annual Conference last week that despite initial signs of improvement, increasing revenues, controlling costs and carefully matching capacity to demand are the keys to survival.

Lozi expressed satisfaction with the results achieved by RJ in 2009 and pointed out that RJ’s board of directors agreed this month on a number of decisions that aim at boosting the competitive position of the airline.

Last year, RJ registered a net profit of over JD28 million as total revenues exceeded JD570 million.

Noting that RJ achieved positive results in a difficult year, he mentioned that the International Air Transport Association (IATA) predicted over $11 billion losses in 2009 for world airlines. Cumulative airline industry losses over the past decade are estimated to have reached $50 billion.

“These achievements,” he was quoted in the press statement as saying, “were attained despite the effects of the international crises, including the rise in oil prices, the collapse of the global financial system, a widespread economic recession, and sharp competition.”

He added:"The oneworld alliance, which we are a proud member of, is continuing to grow in airline numbers and passenger volume, and our membership in this prestigious alliance has started to pay off on many fronts.”

“Passengers around the world are now more aware of RJ and its services. Our cooperation with the other members has opened up new avenues for us to increase revenues and reduce costs of joint services,” Lozi elaborated.

The chairman called upon the participants to invest in the success that the airline is continuing to obtain year after year, by increasing productivity, working hard, having strategic planning and enhancing the competitive edge.

"In order to remain competitive and profitable, we need to constantly adapt and evolve our approach, systems and processes," Lozi concluded.

In his presentation to the conference, RJ President/Chief Executive Officer Hussein Dabbas said by using the motto "Embracing Change and Excellence", RJ has embarked in the last five years on a programme of continuous change and development that was marked in upgrading the fleet, facilities, IT systems, service and staff training.

He also reviewed the operational indicators RJ registered last year.

“The airline is capable of achieving good results because it believes that investing in human resources is rewarding and offers passengers competitive services in the air and on the ground,” the press release quoted Dabbas as saying.

“RJ is considered an example of positive change, leading to excellence in work procedures and services,” he added. Proof of RJ’s leading, competitive position was inviting it to become a member of the oneworld airline alliance, the first Arab air carrier invited to join any of the three global alliances.

RJ has a leading position in Jordan, covering 60 per cent of the operations in the local market where 31 foreign airlines operate as well.

This was achieved by introducing modern aircraft with high specifications of comfort and entertainment, the privilege of its membership in oneworld and the good reputation it enjoys locally and globally, said Dabbas.

Regarding future plans, the president indicated that this year RJ will operate a new direct route to Madinah Munawwarah, Saudi Arabia, and will resume operations to Kuala Lumpur via Bangkok.

Moreover, in 2010, two new Airbus A330s will join the airline to operate on the Far East and London routes and a new Embraer 175 will be introduced to support the regional network.

The airline will also refit the entire Airbus A340 fleet with new seats and in-seat in-flight entertainment.

He added that among the airline's plans, RJ will replace four Airbus A320 and two A321 with new aircraft between 2011 and 2012, and will prepare to receive Boeing 787s starting with 2013.

In the course of two days, the conference tackled the 2010 marketing and operational plans of the company. It also assessed RJ outstations’ performance last year, with a view to creating sales and marketing tools and boosting the company's market share worldwide.

International challenges, foremost among them the global economic crisis and competition, were also issues that figured high on the agenda of the conference.

RJ area and airport services managers, and the heads of departments discussed the efficiency of the productivity system, and solutions and suggestions in support of the strategic plans meant to increase sales and open promising markets that fit the RJ route network and its young fleet of aircraft.

RJ and Siyaha sign an agreement to minimise enviromental impact

Royal Jordanian and the USAID/Jordan Tourism Development Project II (Siyaha II) signed a memorandum of understanding recently agreeing to cooperate in setting up an environmental management plan (EMP) for RJ.

The agreement was signed by RJ President/CEO Hussein Dabbas, USAID/Jordan Tourism Development Project II Chief of Party, Ibrahim Osta and witnessed by Maha Mousa on behalf of USAID.

“Minimizing the environmental impact of RJ operations is one of the airline’s priorities, and this initiative will help build the foundation for RJ to further reduce its impact,” said Dabbas.

“The main purpose of our partnership with RJ on this project is to support environment sustainability of the airline as part of larger efforts to promote responsible tourism in Jordan,” said Osta.

According to the MoU, the parties will develop an environment management plan for RJ that is compliant with relevant international and Jordanian environmental legislation. The plan will help the airline to identify, prevent, control and monitor adverse environmental impacts associated with its operations. Through qualified and experienced environmental management consultants, Siyaha II will provide RJ with the technical support needed to identify the environmental challenges RJ is facing and create a framework for preparing an EMP, which will be developed by the RJ environment team.

The four-month agreement covers two phases. In the first phase, Siyaha II will collect and analyze available data and information regarding RJ operations. Also, conditions on the ground at RJ’s main facilities will be assessed. Phase II will then entail consultations with RJ, the Ministry of Environment, the Civil Aviation Regulatory Commission and other relevant parties regarding the EMP and compliance requirements for RJ. The MoU is part of the programs undertaken by RJ for environment protection. The airline is working towards a set target to reduce pollutants, including aircraft emission, ground support equipment (GSE) emission, fire extinguishers gas, aircraft air-conditioning units gas, waste and hazard material. In the process of selecting aircraft engines, RJ takes many factors into consideration, among which are fuel consumption, emission and noise levels.

The company focuses on assimilating aircraft with reduced fuel consumption, leading to lower emissions. In addition, awareness campaigns have been launched among the employees to ration electricity, water and resource consumption.

Royal Jordanian chief outlines operational plans

Royal Jordanian (RJ) President and Chief Executive Officer Hussein Dabbas on Wednesday confirmed that RJ will receive the first group of Boeing 787 Dreamliner in October 2013, as part of its plans to modernise and upgrade its fleet.

Speaking at a press conference, Dabbas said the company had placed an order to purchase 11 Boeing 787 Dreamliner in 2006 and they were scheduled to join the company at the beginning of 2011. However, the receiving date was delayed to 2013.

Due to the delay, RJ decided to modernise and upgrade four Airbus 340 aircraft at a cost of $12 million, Dabbas indicated, noting that the RJ fleet currently comprises 29 aircraft, including 12 modern Airbus and seven Embraer aircraft.

“We have also added a new 75-passenger Embraer to the fleet to meet the large increase in the number of flights the company runs to regional stations,” Dabbas said, noting that the national carrier flights reach all major cities in the region.

Moreover, two chartered Airbus 330 will join RJ’s fleet to serve the growing number of flights to southeast Asia destinations and the Amman-London route, he pointed out.

On new aviation routes, Dabbas said RJ will resume operations to Kuala Lumpur in May in light of signs of economic recovery and the increase witnessed in tourism and commercial activity to that area. Also, starting March 28, RJ will operate four weekly flights to Madina Munawwarah.

Regarding air transport services to Iraq, he said the route is a promising market for RJ, adding that RJ conducts feasibility studies before taking any decisions to start or resume operations to any destination.

Jordan: Tuesday, March 23 - 2010

On May 21, 2010, two new Airbus A330s will join the Royal Jordanian fleet to serve the growing number of flights to the Far East destinations and the London route.

And in the last quarter of this year, a new Embraer 175 aircraft will also be added to the fleet to meet the large increase in the number of flights the airline runs to regional stations. RJ operates seven regional jets of Embraer 195 and 175 type.

RJ President/CEO Hussein Dabbas said that introducing the two Airbus A330s to the fleet, which includes 29 aircraft, comes to cover part of the RJ route network in light of delays in the delivery of 11 Boeing 787 Dreamliners, which will start joining the fleet in 2013. The B787s were scheduled to join the airline at the beginning of 2011.

Dabbas pointed out that the two wide-bodied, less-than-one-year-old aircraft seat 283 passengers; 24 of them are business class. They also provide optimal comfort to passengers in terms of seat pitch and in-flight entertainment system on both business and economy class. The aircraft will be equipped with Audio-Video On Demand (AVOD) system, available to all passengers, whereby each can choose from a wide selection of programs and watch it on his/her screen.

Dabbas also announced that on March 28, RJ will inaugurate its direct, regular service to Madinah, Saudi Arabia, in light of the studies that show the importance of serving Hajj and Umrah pilgrims directly from Amman to Madinah.

Flights will also be resumed to the Malaysian capital Kuala Lumpur at the beginning of June this year, in light of the signs of recovery and increase in tourism and commercial activity to Malaysia, which is considered a family tourist attraction to the Arab countries.

The three weekly flights to Kuala Lumpur will be operated via Bangkok using the Airbus A330s. The new aircraft will also be operated four times a week to Hong Kong via Bangkok, three times a week to Colombo and daily to London.

Royal Jordanian launches online check-in service

Royal Jordanian announced that starting April 1, 2010, it has launched a new service, 'Online check-in', enabling passengers to issue their boarding passes electronically from their homes, offices or any place connected to the Internet, through its website. This service is part of the company's endeavors to automate and streamline travel procedures.

Through this service, RJ passengers can check in online 24 hours before departure, through the website, www.rj.com, following a series of easy steps: select country of origin and identify information by applying the ticket number, the passenger name record (PNR), frequent flyer number and last name; check in through selecting name from the search list and confirming it, in addition to picking the preferred seat; a summary of the first and second steps will enable passengers to print the boarding pass. This service enables passengers to e-mail the electronic boarding pass to their personal e-mail if they wish to print it at a later stage.

The web check-in is one of the projects of the International Air Transport Association's campaign "Simplifying the Business". RJ, a member of the oneworld alliance, is a pioneer executor of the international campaign in the Middle East and North Africa region.

The service is accessible to RJ passengers traveling out of Amman to all international destinations except for the US, as a first phase, which will be activated soon. At a later stage, the service is to be extended to cover all RJ destinations.

Online check-in also allows RJ passengers who only have carry-on luggage of appropriate size and weight to make their way directly to the boarding gate after stamping their passports at the immigration counter without passing through the traditional travel procedures.

Passengers who carry heavy luggage will have to pay a short visit to the online check-in baggage counter, where the check-in agent will enter the number of bags and their weight to issue the baggage tag. The online check-in baggage counter closes one hour prior to departure.

RJ President/CEO Hussein Dabbas said, "Royal Jordanian permanently seeks to improve its services by keeping pace with the modern technology in the air transport industry."

He stressed that the company's ability to automate all travel procedures is due to the advanced electronic network, adding that issuing boarding passes electronically will enable travelers to cut short the time they need to go through the travel procedures and avoid standing in queues for long periods.

He called upon the passengers to read carefully the website instructions for the web check-in process, particularly information related to weight allowance for carry-on luggage, and to keep a copy of the boarding pass to avoid delays at the airport.

Adding this service, RJ allows travelers to complete all travel procedures from the comfort of their home.

RJ cancels more flights as Europe airports remain closed

Royal Jordanian (RJ) was forced to cancel seven flights on Sunday as a volcanic ash cloud from Iceland continued to block European airports for the fourth day in a row.

RJ flights on Sunday to Geneva-Zurich, Paris, Milan, Vienna, Frankfurt, Kiev and London were cancelled, while a flight to Barcelona was rerouted to Madrid, according to the RJ website.

About 30 countries have now closed or restricted their airspace, with the cloud of fine mineral dust particles from Iceland now extending from the Arctic Circle in the north to the French Mediterranean coast in the south and from Spain into Russia, Agence France-Presse reported (see story on page 6).

On its website, www.rj.com, the airline also says passengers affected by the closure of European airports will be rebooked onto the next available RJ flight, and can have their tickets refunded if they decide not to travel.

RJ Media Director/Spokesman Basel Kilani told The Jordan Times that RJ constantly updates its website on developments regarding any flights based on information it receives from European airports, and called on travellers to check the website regularly.

Minister of Foreign Affairs Nasser Judeh said all embassies and missions abroad are following up on the situation of Jordanians whose flights to and from European countries were cancelled due to the cloud of volcanic ash.

In a circular issued Sunday, a copy of which was obtained by The Jordan Times, the minister instructed all embassies and missions abroad to inform the ministry of developments in this regard, the Jordan News Agency, Petra, reported.

Due to the cancellations in flights from Amman to European destinations over the past few days, many travellers have been stranded in Jordan. For some it was an opportunity to rest and relax, while for others it was a source of annoyance.

Charlotte, a Belgian university student who came to Jordan to conduct research, said she was supposed to go back home Monday around 2:00am before the flight was cancelled.

“It is not a big problem for me. I am a university student, so it is okay, but I do not know when I will go back yet,” she told The Jordan Times.

However, she added that the cancellation has been a source of stress for her boyfriend Rek, who came to Jordan on an unplanned visit last Tuesday.

“He wanted to surprise me with a short visit. But his visit now is longer because of the cancellation,” Charlotte said, adding that her boyfriend, who works in a lab, is “a little bit stressed”.

RJ aims to raise income, number of passengers

AMMAN (JT) - A Royal Jordanian (RJ) press release stressed Saturday that the airline will continue during 2010 to carry out its strategic plans.

The airline aims to increase the number of passengers and revenues, in addition to boosting its financial position, the press statement quoted RJ Chairman Nasser Lozi as telling the company’s general assembly.

In a speech distributed to shareholders, Lozi said: “[The airline] endeavours to achieve these plans by improving air and ground services, enhancing connectivity, and modernising the information systems in the human resources, cargo, procurement and maintenance departments, and completing the fleet modernisation plan.”

Lozi indicated to the general assembly that held an ordinary session on Saturday, that the final phase of building RJ's headquarters in Amman is expected to be completed by the first quarter of 2011.

The chairman’s speech included a review of the company’s most notable achievements in 2009 and highlighted that RJ generated a net profit of JD28.6 million compared to a net loss of JD24.6 million in 2008.

He attributed the fall in revenues by 14.5 per cent to a drop in passenger and cargo activity as a result of a 13 per cent decline in the rate of return caused partially by the reduction in fuel surcharge due to lower fuel prices worldwide.

“In addition, ticket prices went down because of the intense competition among airlines, regionally and internationally, and the emergence of low-cost carriers in the region,” Lozi said.

According to the chairman, RJ was able to achieve the aforementioned profit because operational expenses were lower by 19.1 per cent due to the drop in the cost of flight operations, mainly a 47 per cent fall in the company’s fuel bill.

“In addition, an effective management of demand for travel and a policy of cost control were pursued by the company during the last year, without affecting the level of services provided to passengers,” he said

Lozi indicated that in 2009, RJ transported 2.7 million passengers, 1 per cent fewer than in 2008. Flight frequencies and flying hours went up by 4 per cent each, whereas airfreight declined by 27 per cent compared to 2008.

He said Royal Jordanian continued to modernise the short- and medium-haul fleet, noting that in 2009, the company introduced two fully equipped Airbus 319, as part of this programme.

As for the long-haul fleet, Lozi added: “Since delivery of the Boeing 787 [Dreamliner] was delayed until 2013, the company decided to add two modern Airbus 330, which will join the fleet on May 21.”

Noting that An Embraer 175 will also join the fleet during the last quarter of 2010, he said the airline decided to renovate four A340s to provide the passengers with all the amenities required.

RJ launched two new routes to Brussels and Benghazi in 2009, added a new route to Medina in March 2010, and plans on resuming flights to Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia’s capital, on the first of June 2010.

RJ’s Vice Chairman Al Sharif Faris Sharaf headed the general assembly meeting which was attended by President/Chief Executive Officer Hussein Dabbas, members of the board of directors and Ernst and Young, auditors of RJ accounts, the companies’ Comptroller Saber Al Rawashdeh, and a number of shareholders owning 71 per cent of the company's capital, which amounts to 84.3 million shares/JDs.

The general assembly approved the 2009 financial report of the board of directors' financial and decided to retain the earnings in order to strengthen the capital of the company and use the profits to implement various projects with a view to strengthening RJ’s capacity and meeting the challenges expected during the current year.

Royal Jordanian aiming for 85% load factor on KL service

The airline will begin Amman-Kuala Lumpur and Kuala Lumpur-Amman services on June 2 after a five-year lapse driven by commercial reasons, said Country Sales Manager Wilson Chan.

He said studies indicated an upward market trend in tourism and commercial activities in Kuala Lumpur as Malaysia was highly regarded as an ideal tourist destination to the Arab world and the Gulf Cooperation Council member states.

With the commencement of the flights, Royal Jordanian Airlines was committed to better serve passengers especially Jordanians and the Arab community residing in Malaysia.

"My main aim is to get the flights go up into the sky and back in Kuala Lumpur. This time we hope to stay as long as we can," he told Bernama.

He said that with strong marketing strategies, the Amman-Kuala Lumpur route would be viable and successful as the airline had plans to fly direct to Amman, the modern and ancient capital of Jordan.

Chan said he was meeting travel agencies to work closely with them to promote the services.

"Once the load picks up for our in-coming and out-going, we can then start flying direct to Amman instead of via Bangkok," he said.

He said the airline is also targeting traffic growth from students, captains of industry and leisure travellers.

He said the flights are on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays onboard latest A330 aircraft, an addition to its expanding fleet of new generation planes.

"We just got two new A330 aircraft on leasing for five years," he said.

The A330 wide-bodied aircraft can carry 283 passengers in two class configurations, of which 24 are configured as "Crown Club Class", offering sleeper seats that recline to flat-bedded seats on the long-haul sectors.

"As a Crown Class passenger, you will feel the difference not only onboard, but also at the airport with exclusive check-in counters and lavish lounges for your utmost ease and comfort," he said.

The balance 259 are comfortable economy-class seats.

Moving forward, the airline plans to fly to China and Johannesburg, he added.

Royal Jordanian May Make ‘Slight’ Profit in 2010

Royal Jordanian Airlines, the first Middle Eastern carrier to order Boeing Co.’s 787 Dreamliner, may only make a “slight” profit this year as fuel costs increase, said Chief Executive Officer Hussein Dabbas.

“We are seeing a major increase in the fuel prices,” Dabbas said in an interview today from Amman, where the carrier is based. “During the past month or more we’ve been having around over $85-$86 a barrel of oil and that’s affected our cost structure a bit.” The company’s budget for this year was based on a fuel cost of $80 a barrel, he said.

“In revenue we hope we will be able to cover the costs and make a slight profit,” compared with last year, Dabbas said.

Oil increased as much as $1 a barrel yesterday to a 19- month high of $87.15. Crude oil for June delivery traded at $85.07 at 11:16 a.m. in London in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange.

Royal Jordanian reported a first-quarter loss of 11.8 million dinars ($16.7 million). The airline posted full-year profit of 28.6 million dinars in 2009, compared with a net loss of 24.7 million dinars in 2008.

“We’re seeing a resurgence in passengers,” Dabbas said. “But the cost of fuel has also gone up, we’re paying almost double what we paid last year. That’s why 2010 will be a difficult but promising year. We hope the economy will pick up. The signs we’re seeing are encouraging.”

Passenger Numbers

In the first three months of the year the airline carried about 20 percent more passengers from the same period in 2009, Dabbas said. The carrier is forecasting as much as a 13 percent increase this year.

Royal Jordanian is forecasting a seat factor, or the percentage of seats filled, of 70 percent or more for 2010. The airline had a 68 percent seat factor in the first quarter.

The airline plans to sell three of its Airbus SAS A310s and replace them with two A330s which it’s leasing from Amentum Capital Ltd., Dabbas said. It is also negotiating the lease of a third A330. The airline is leasing the A330s to make up for a delay in the delivery of the ordered four 787s in 2007.

The delivery of the Dreamliners was put off until 2013, about three years later than the original plan.

Boeing is running about 2 1/2 years late in providing the 787 to customers because of production delays in the new plane, and has lost about a tenth of its order book to cancellations.

Royal Jordanian’s fleet comprises 29 aircraft, including Airbus and Empresa Brasileira de Aeronautica SA planes.

RJ aircraft flies at a low altitude over Amman

On the occasion of two new Airbus A330 joining Royal Jordanian fleet, four RJ aircraft today fly at low altitudes over Amman.

The two new aircraft will fly along an Airbus A321 and an Embraer aircraft between 14:15 pm and 15:15 pm over the capital, so citizens will be able to watch them up close.

The two new wide-bodied-cabin airliners are equipped with outstanding technical features and entertainment facilities, particularly the Audio Video On Demand (AVOD) entertainment system that provides each of the aircraft's 283 passengers — of which 24 in business class — a personal in-seat screen to watch their programs from a wide selection.

The new aircraft will bring the fleet up to 31. The A330s will serve the airline's long- and medium-haul routes to London, Bangkok, Hong Kong and Kuala Lumpur.

Anyway, the 330s looked great in RJ livery. Some people in Amman who didn't know about this ceremonial flights got the jitters especially when they saw two huge airliners flying at less than 500 feet approaching Amman's twin towers!

RJ begins regular service to Kuala Lumpur today

AMMAN (JT) - Royal Jordanian (RJ) announced in a press release that regular service to Kuala Lumpur will begin today after a seven-year suspension in operations between the two countries due to commercial reasons. RJ President/Chief Executive Officer Hussein Dabbas, who will accompany RJ passengers on the first flight, pointed out in the press statement that the decision to reconnect Jordan and Malaysia came in light of the Malaysian economic revival and the growth of its commercial activity and tourism.

Malaysia is considered a gateway to Southeast Asia, particularly in the economic field. Dabbas said that the feasibility studies the company conducted showed that resuming flights to Kuala Lumpur is bound to service the economic and commercial movement, and the communities living in the two countries, particularly students and businessmen. Additionally, RJ will be transporting tourist groups to and from Malaysia, as Malaysia is a preferred destination for Jordanian families and various other countries in the region. Dabbas also said that Jordan constitutes a stop for the Malaysian passengers travelling to the holy places in Mecca, Medina Munawwara and Jerusalem.

Royal Jordanian begins fleet renewals with seven narrowbodies

Royal Jordanian Airlines is upgrading its A320/A321 fleet with seven new aircraft which are all to be fitted with the latest IFE in order to maintain the airline's development across the Levant.

Irish leasing company AWAS will supply five A320s and two A321s.

Headquartered in Dublin, with offices in New York, Miami, and Singapore, AWAS is one of the largest aircraft leasing companies in the world. It owns a portfolio of more than 207 modern aircraft with a further 117 aircraft on order from Airbus and Boeing. The aircraft portfolio is on lease to over 90 airline customers in 44 countries.

Royal Jordanian chief executive Hussein Dabbas said that six of the aircraft were replacements for those already in the fleet. There is one additional A320.

The first three A320s will join the fleet in April next year with the other four aircraft coming in 2012.

Royal Jordanian is understood to also be considering another Airbus A330 and an additional Embraer E190.

Demand on travel increases the frequency of Royal Jordanian flights to 110 daily

Royal Jordanian significantly increased the frequency of its operations to several destinations on its route network in response to the growing demand to travel on board RJ aircraft during this summer season. The airline increased flight frequencies operated to and from Amman to more than 110 daily.

RJ President/CEO Hussein Dabbas pointed out that this year's summer months will see a notable demand on travel on board RJ from many regional and international cities to Amman, particularly from the Arab Gulf, the Middle East, North America and Europe.

Dabbas also mentioned that seat bookings for July and August show record figures for the first time in RJ's history. He said that preliminary booking figures for July exceeded 320,000, and are still ongoing, resulting in more flights to destinations such as Abu Dhabi, Al Ain, Dubai, Doha, Manama, Jeddah, Dammam, Kuwait, Beirut, Cairo, Istanbul, Damascus, Aleppo and Chicago.

In light of the growing flight frequencies, Dabbas added, RJ is operating four daily flights to Beirut, three daily flights to Dubai, Cairo and Jeddah, two daily flights to Abu Dhabi, Istanbul, Damascus, Aqaba, Kuwait and Aleppo, and one daily flight to Chicago, Bahrain and Doha. In addition, RJ has regular daily flights to Baghdad, Bangkok, Colombo, Riyadh, Sharm El-Sheikh, Frankfurt and London.

Dabbas attributed the growing demand on travel on board RJ to the trust that passengers have in Royal Jordanian and to the major improvements the airline has been witnessing. RJ operates a modern fleet of aircraft, offers distinguished services in the air and on the ground, is punctual and ensures effortless travel procedures, most of which are now automated and computerized, and carried out through the company's website.

Dabbas added that "among the other reasons of this remarkable demand is that RJ owns a broad route network which covers 58 global cities served by the airline directly from Amman, in addition to over 750 other destinations served in collaboration with RJ's partners, members of the oneworld airline alliance, using one ticket at a competitive price. RJ has been allies with ten big names in the airline industry since 2007."

Royal Jordanian to introduce seven new Airbus aircraft

AMMAN (JT) –– Royal Jordanian (RJ) on Tuesday announced that it intends to introduce seven new Airbus A320 and A321 aircraft to replace six Airbus currently operating in the fleet.

The first delivery of the airplanes is scheduled for April of next year, and the others will follow in 2012, according to an RJ statement.

RJ President and Chief Executive Officer Hussein Dabbas said the order for new aircraft underlines the airline's continued commitment to upgrade its fleet and expand operations in addition to enabling the airline to offer its passengers the highest level of comfort and an extensive choice of routes.

He pointed out that the new extra aircraft will give the company the flexibility to easily tailor the fleet to the needs of the market, serving the short- and medium-range routes.

Dabbas said that the replacement consists of four Airbus A320s and two Airbus A321s, plus an additional A320.

According to Dabbas, the six aircraft that will leave the airline are not old, as each has six years of operations, but RJ continues its plans to provide new and better services to the passengers.

The newly manufactured airliners are to be equipped with a state-of-the-art entertainment system that enjoys more efficient technical features, said the statement, adding the new aircraft are bound to save the airline maintenance and operational costs.

The RJ president said that the fleet, which currently comprises around 30 aircraft, is considered as one of the youngest and most modern in the world.

Last year, RJ concluded its short- and medium-range fleet modernisation programme by introducing 19 newly manufactured aircraft; 12 are from the Airbus 320 family and seven are Embraers 195 and 175. The airline is to add another new Embraer 175 to the fleet in the last quarter of this year.

Regarding the long-range fleet modernisation, Dabbas pointed out that 11 Boeing 787 Dreamliners will start joining the RJ fleet in 2013. Moreover, two new Airbus A330s were added last month to serve the long-haul routes. The four Airbus A340s, operated to North America and the Far East, will also undergo a comprehensive renovation process.

Royal Jordanian Airlines orders three additional Boeing 787 Dreamliners

Royal Jordanian Airlines (Amman) has signed an order for three additional Boeing 787-8s at the Farnborough International Air Show. This order previously was attributed to an unidentified customer.

Royal Jordanian has now committed to 11 787-8s. The Middle East carrier placed its first orders for four 787s in 2007 and also has arranged to lease two airplanes each from CIT Aerospace and International Lease Finance Company (ILFC).

Royal Jordanian was the first airline in the Middle East to order the 787 Dreamliner. It will place the 787 on North American routes initially, including New York, Chicago, Detroit and Toronto.

Royal Jordanian Purchases GEnx Engines for Additional Boeing 787 Aircraft

Royal Jordanian has agreed to purchase six GEnx-1B engines to power its three additional Boeing 787 Dreamliner aircraft. This new order is in addition to the four purchased and four leased GEnx-1B-powered Boeing 787 aircraft that Royal Jordanian announced in 2007.

The six newly purchased GEnx engines will be covered in the Royal Jordanian's 12-year OnPoint solution services agreement that was signed in 2007 and will provide maintenance, repair and overhaul services to the airline's GEnx fleet.

"The selection of the GEnx engines once again for our second B787 order re-affirms our trust in GE Aviation and this superior product," said Hussein Dabbas, President and Chief Executive Officer of Royal Jordanian. "The testing which the GEnx has undergone through certification has given us the confidence of the level of performance and cost of ownership that we can expect from an engine that will form a core part of our long-haul fleet renewal plan."

"This additional order for GEnx engines demonstrates the confidence that Royal Jordanian has in the GEnx engine," said David Joyce, president and chief executive officer of GE Aviation. "GE Aviation looks forward to working with the airline to ensure a smooth entry into service."

The GEnx-1B and –2B engines continue flight-testing on the Boeing 787 and 747-8 respectively. The engine has accumulated more than 12,000 cycles and 9,000 hours since it began testing in 2006.

Based on proven GE90 architecture, the GEnx engine will succeed GE's CF6 engine. Compared to the CF6 engine, the GEnx will offer 15 percent improved fuel efficiency, which translates to 15 percent less CO2. The GEnx's innovative twin-annular pre-swirl (TAPS) combustor will dramatically reduce NOx gases as much as 60 percent below today's regulatory limits and other regulated gases as much as 90 percent. Based on the ratio of decibels to pounds of thrust, the GEnx will be the quietest engine GE has produced due to the large, more efficient fan blades that operate at slower tip speed, resulting in about 30 percent lower noise levels. The GEnx will be the world's only jet engine with both a front fan case and fan blades made of carbon fiber composites.

Hey guys! I was just doing a little research about Royal Jordanian airlines when I stumbled across this site. I'm going to Jordan for the first time after Christmas of this year, and I'm super excited! I'll be flying nonstop from Chicago to Amman, and it's the first time I've ever flown. I definitely picked a long flight to break myself in. :P
But I have a question. Does RJ enforce the carry on baggage limits? I know that some airlines don't care, and some only care if it looks heavy. I'm concerned that I might go over the limit by a pound or two. Would this be a big deal? Any help would be much appreciated!
Thank you so much,

You are allowed 23 kg or 50 LB onboard RJ to North America. Generally RJ is pretty relaxed in regards to luggage weight. (That doesnt mean you can take an extra 5 kgs (11LBs))

I think you will be fine, but I cannot give a gurantee that they won't charge you, at the end of the day its up to the check in counter staff.

Royal Jordanian Airlines transports 330,000 passengers last month; an increase of 14.6%

Royal Jordanian carried more than 330,000 passengers to its 58 direct destinations around the world, marking an increase of 14.6% over the same month in 2009 and a 7% growth above the target.

RJ president/CEO Hussein Dabbas said that the summer months are witnessing high demand on travel to all network sectors, being for the purpose of tourism or the increasing traffic of expatriates coming to visit their relatives in Jordan , in addition to the growing movement of students and businessmen.

He pointed out that the Arab Gulf and the Levant accounted for the largest share of passenger traffic during July, followed by Europe, North America and the Far East . Dabbas indicated that the seat factor went up by 5 points over the same month last year, and also increased by 2.3 points over the target to reach 79.3%.

This summer season, the oneworld carrier, Royal Jordanian, increased its flight frequencies to more than 110 daily to several destinations. Thus, the airline operated 3,538 departures in July 2010; a 9.1% growth over the comparison period.

The flying hours also rose to reach 10,257 hours, marking an increase of 8.6% compared to July 2009, leading to a rise of 4.5% in the total utilization of the fleet.

Dabbas stressed that August is also seeing a traffic growth, and is expected to remarkably develop in September, in light of the forthcoming Eid Al-Fiter and the students going back to school and colleges worldwide.

Delay in ‘Dreamliner’ delivery will not affect Royal Jordanian plans

Royal Jordanian (RJ) plans will not be affected by the latest delay in initial deliveries of Boeing 787 ‘Dreamliner’ aircraft, an RJ official said Monday.

On Friday, the Chicago-based Boeing said first 787 deliveries would be pushed back to the middle of the first quarter 2011. Dreamliner was supposed to enter service in 2008 but has suffered several setbacks due to parts shortages, redesign work and a greater reliance on suppliers.

This time, Boeing cited the nonavailability of a Rolls-Royce engine –– needed for test flights this fall - as a reason for the delay.

RJ Media Director Basel Kilani told The Jordan Times yesterday that the national air carrier’s delivery plans has not been affected by the recent delay.

Noting that RJ has placed an order to purchase 11 Boeing 787 Dreamliners, whose price ranges between $150 million and $205 million each, Kilani indicated that the company will receive the first four aircraft as scheduled in October 2013, while the other seven passenger jets will join the airline’s fleet within the three years following the first delivery date.

Earlier this year, RJ President and Chief Executive Officer Hussein Dabbas said RJ will receive the first group of Boeing 787 Dreamliner in October 2013, as part of its plans to modernise and upgrade its fleet.

Dabbas added that the company had placed an order to purchase 11 Boeing 787 Dreamliner in 2006 and they were scheduled to join the company at the beginning of 2011.

In the Gulf, Qatar Airways signed a deal in 2007 to buy 30 787s, with another 30 more on option, although it plans to use GE rather than Rolls Royce engines.

The Qatari air carrier, which announced that its delivery plans had not been affected by the latest delay, had been seeking deliveries in 2011, but struck an agreement with Boeing last year to have its first jet scheduled for 2013 instead.

The UAE’s Etihad Airways has 35 firm orders for the airline, with 25 options. As with Qatar Airways, its plans for later deliveries have also left the carrier unaffected, according to media reports.

According to Boeing company, 56 customers around the world have ordered 860 787s since the programme was launched in April 2004, making the Dreamliner the fastest-selling new commercial jetliner in history.

RJ: Number of passengers increases by 4.3% in August

The FINANCIAL -- The on-time performance of RJ aircraft, at departure and landing, has increased during the month of August to 90%, compared to 84% during the same month of 2009

RJ President/ CEO Hussein Dabbas stated: “The airline was able to improve the on-time performance of its scheduled flights despite the increase in the number of passengers, flights and flight hours.”

He pointed out that the company transported about 300,000 passengers in August, compared to 285,000 passengers in the same month of last year, which represents a rise of 4.3%.

Dabbas added: “The seat factor also increased last month by almost half a point, to 74.1% from 73.7% in the comparison period, while the number of flights increased from 3,265 in 2009 to 3,435 this August, marking a 5.2% increase.”

He pointed out that Royal Jordanian operates more than 110 daily scheduled flights to its destinations to 58 international cities.

The increase in the number of flights also meant an increase in flying hours of the 30 aircraft in RJ fleet. The total flight hours grew to 9,983 from 9,766 during the comparison period, marking a growth rate of 2.2%.

“Royal Jordanian continues, during the current year, to score high records in the number of passengers carried month after month; the company carried more than 330,000 passenger in July 2010,” Dabbas pointed out.

The growth of the airline’s operational results is a reflection of outstanding services it provides its passengers, in addition to the facilities provided on board and at the Airport , like e-transactions: issuing e-tickets, boarding passes, and self-check at Queen Alia International Airport , concluded Dabbas.

Royal Jordanian and Malaysia Airline sign code-share agreement

Royal Jordanian (RJ) and Malaysia Airline (MH), the national carrier of Malaysia, signed a unilateral free sale code-share agreement, whereby MH is the marketing carrier, placing its code on RJ flights operated on Amman- Kuala Lumpur -Amman sector. The agreement has been effective as of September 1, 2010.

RJ President/CEO Hussein Dabbas, who signed the agreement with MH Managing Director, Tengku Dato' Azmil Zaharuddin, said, "the code-share agreement between RJ and MH is a free flow agreement whereby MH may sell as many seats on Amman- Kuala Lumpur -Amman flights as RJ, with no limitation to the number of seats sold by MH. "

Dabbas added: "The resuming of its regular flights to the Malaysian capital, Kuala Lumpur, on June 2, after a 7-year suspension in operations between the two countries (which stopped in 2003) due to the weak economic feasibility of the route over the past years; comes as a result of the economic revival and the growth of its commercial activity and tourism".

He mentioned that: "This will offer new opportunities for passengers and will boost the tourism sector as Malaysia is considered a gateway to Southeast Asia, particularly in the economic field where it will serve the traffic of businessmen and students."

RJ operates three flights a week - on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, using its recently introduced Airbus A330s.

Dabbas added that RJ is also preparing to expand its code-share agreement from bilateral to unilateral with British Airways after implementing the Amadeus system in October this year. Next Year, RJ is also planning to introduce new code-share agreements with its oneworld partners.

RJ currently has code- share agreements with several international airlines: American Airlines, British Airways, US Airways, Iberia, Malév Hungarian Airlines, Siberia airlines (S7), Tarom, Gulf Air, Syrian Airlines and Yemen Airways.

Malaysia Airlines Managing Director/CEO, Tengku Dato' Azmil Zahruddin said, "We are pleased to add the city of Amman to our network as a new destination. Jordan has much to offer to the avid traveler with the world famous ancient city of Petra, the desert castles and the Dead Sea."

"The Middle East is an important business and leisure destination of our passengers. This partnership with Royal Jordanian is aligned with our plans to further expand and strengthen our hub-and-spoke network in this region. It will allow us to capture untapped traffic from Amman, as well as other destinations in the Middle East," Azmil added.

With Kuala Lumpur added to the RJ network, the airline's reaches 57 destinations served directly from Amman, in addition to over 700 destinations in almost 150 countries served with its oneworld partners.

Aviation dispute with Jordan threatens flights

A new aviation crisis has emerged between Israel and Jordan: The Israel Civil Aviation Authority is refusing to approve Royal Jordanian Airlines' new winter schedule for its Tel Aviv-Amman route. In response, Jordanian aviation officials are threatening to prevent Israeli airlines from flying the same route.

The dispute has reached the highest political levels in the two countries. Royal Jordanian claims Israel is trying to protect Israeli airlines, which are losing passengers to Royal Jordanian, particularly on the lucrative routes to the Far East.

A new aviation agreement was signed between the countries in August, which does not limit the number of flights, but does limit Royal Jordanian to 1,500 seats a week. The Jordanian airline has 17 scheduled flights a week on the route.

The ICAA declined to comment.

Jordan: RJ revenues up by 14.6%, but profits go down to JD19.6 million

AMMAN (JT) - Royal Jordanian (RJ) profits during the first nine months of this year went down to JD19.6 million from JD25.5 million achieved during the same period of 2009.

According to a statement issued by the airline company on Monday, RJ
board of directors, chaired by Nasser Lozi, approved in its Sunday session the financial results of the company for the first nine months of 2010 which showed that its gross profits reached JD65.5 million compared to JD73.3 million during the January-September period of 2009.

Lozi said that the profits were registered despite the challenges facing the air transport industry regionally and internationally, such as the sharp competition and its direct effect on the drop in the yield per passenger, said the statement.

Moreover, this year saw an increase in fuel prices compared to last year; the fuel bill the airline paid in the first nine months of this year was JD151 million compared to the JD110-million bill paid during the same period of last year, Lozi said.

Expressing optimism that RJ will achieve satisfying results by the end of this year, Lozi stressed the board of directors' confidence in the company's measures to increase productivity, control costs and cut the operational expenditures without affecting the quality of services offered to passengers,

The airline is in constant search of new means of boosting revenues. President and CEO, pointed out that despite challenges, the airline achieved positive financial results in the first nine months of this year, explaining that operation revenues went up by 14.6 per cent to JD516 million between January and September of this year from JD450 million registered at the same period of 2009.

Dabbas attributed the regression in the net profits to the operational costs which increased from JD377 million in the first nine months of 2009 to JD450 million this year, an increase of 19.5 per cent.

He added that the number of passengers carried on board RJ aircraft grew by 15 per cent, from 2 million passengers in the first nine months of 2009 to 2.3 million this year.

Number of flights also increased by 9 per cent, according to Dabbas.

Royal Jordanian Airline Launches The Art of Flying

Jordan (Amman) - RJ launched a novel branding campaign (The Art of Flying) that perfectly describes the distinguished air and ground services offered its passengers. These services and the modern technology the airline uses help it efficiently compete with the world airlines and boost its position in the market. These elements were crucial to enabling RJ to join the oneworld airline alliance.

The Art of Flying is designed to reflect the high level of services RJ offers its passengers like a fine piece of art. It is a mark of ongoing dedication to the comfort and entertainment of passengers, both at the airports and onboard RJ aircraft.

RJ President/CEO Hussein Dabbas said that the new campaign complements the previous campaigns the company carried out. Four years ago, RJ launched the campaign "Change is in the Air" to highlight the modernization process the airline was undertaking. The process entailed acquiring new aircraft and refurbishing the existing planes, the introduction of in-flight entertainment, improved onboard service and joining the prestigious oneworld alliance.

Two years after that stage was completed, the next campaign, "You're there", was launched to announce the completion of the modernization phase and the fact that the airline’s objectives had been successfully realized.

According to Dabbas, the new branding campaign, "The Art of Flying", introduces a new promise to RJ passengers. It will signal the presence of onboard amenities, services and entertainment facilities, in addition to the IT solutions that facilitate travel procedures.

The campaign also highlights the special treatment the crew offers passengers, the superb Crown Class services, Zuwar program, freight services, the frequent flyer privileges and others.

RJ promoted the new branding campaign through local, Arab and international media outlets, in addition to the conventional and the new electronic means of marketing.

The public can also see the "The Art of Flying" commercial on American, European and Arab TV channels, and also on Jordanian TV channel and local dailies.

RJ renovates cabin of first Airbus A340

Royal Jordanian (RJ), the national airline of Jordan, has completed a comprehensive cabin modernization to the first of its four Airbus A340s serving North American destinations.

Royal Jordanian is the first airline in the world to equip its aircraft with Seat Integrated Technology (SiT), the new, state-of-the-art audio video on demand (Avod) in-flight entertainment system developed by Zodiac Aerospace.

http://i232.photobucket.com/albums/ee296/yazm1991/Rj-340.gif

RJ president/CEO Hussein Dabbas said the renovation included aircraft cabin modifications to provide premium services to the passengers on long-haul flights, the most important being the new in-flight entertainment system that provides a personal touch screen to all passengers on board the aircraft.

He added that the 229-economy class seats were replaced with new seats and equipped with the SiT, whereas the 24-Crown class seats were modified to suit the SiT product, as well as modifications carried out to the aircraft cabin.

Dabbas pointed out that the airline will start with the cabin re-configuration for its second A340 aircraft on November 2. It is expected to conclude renovating all four Airbus A340 fleet by mid December this year.

"Royal Jordanian is glad to cooperate with Zodiac Aerospace, one of the most renowned, leading companies in the air transport industry," said Dabbas.

He mentioned that the revamping of the aircraft on these routes comes after the airline concluded the modernization of its medium- and short-haul fleet of aircraft. It reflects RJ's keenness to invest in its fleet and to offer its long-haul route passengers distinguished amenities, he added.

Dabbas pointed out," the four Airbus A340 aircraft that are being renovated will continue their operations to New York, Chicago, Detroit and Montreal until the 11 Boeing 787 Dreamliners start being part of the fleet, by the end of 2013. RJ had decided to introduce 7 Dreamliners on capital lease and the other 4 on operational lease basis."

On this occasion, Royal Jordanian organized a two-hour inaugural flight on November 1, in the Jordanian skies. On board the inaugural flight were Minister of Transport Alaa' Batayneh, Deputy Chairman of RJ's board of directors Sharif Faris Sharaf, RJ president/CEO Hussein Dabbas, travel agents and representatives of the local press and media. The flight aimed at introducing the details of the comprehensive cabin modernization to those on board.

Director SiT Operations Eric Cornilleau expressed satisfaction with the fact that RJ is the first airline on the globe to choose the SiT.

He said that "SiT offers a wholly new “simplified architecture” yielding reduction of the overall IFE system weight, measured with gains of approximately 35 per cent, lowering ownership cost and limiting integration costs, and dramatically improving system reliability, assuring system availability for passengers at nearly 100 per cent."

According to Cornilleau, SiT also eases installation while using available and fully mature and tested information technologies. This innovative system design will optimize maintenance operations by allowing simple and rapid tasks that lower operation costs.

RJ adds new Embraer 175 to its fleet

AMMAN- A newly manufactured Embraer 175 aircraft joined the airline on Nov. 12, 2010, the 8th Embraer RJ has added to its Embraer fleet.

RJ introduced five Embraer 195s and two Embraer 175s in the last few years to operate on the regional route network and on short-haul Middle Eastern cities.

The Brazilian Embraer 175 airliner (designated the name Azraq) is considered one of the best regional jets. It is known for the comfort it offers for passengers, in addition to being efficient in terms of fuel consumption. It is configured to carry 72 passengers in a two-class layout, with 12 seats in Crown Class and 60 in economy.

Acquiring this aircraft brings the number of aircraft in RJ fleet to 31, eight of which are Embraers and the rest different Airbus types. Among the latter are Airbus A330s which the airline introduced in May this year to serve the long-haul routes.

In regards of the fleet modernization program, the national carrier announced that it intends to introduce seven new Airbus A320 and A321 aircraft to replace six Airbus currently operating in the fleet, plus an additional A320. The first delivery is scheduled for April of next year, and the others will follow in 2012.

The planes enjoy high-quality specifications and are bound to provide passengers with an advanced in-flight entertainment (IFE) system, including a special screen embedded in each seat.

Regarding the long-range fleet modernization, RJ will start receiving the 11 Boeing 787 Dreamliners in 2013, whereas the airline is now undergoing a comprehensive renovation process to its four Airbus A340s operating on the long-haul routes at a cost of $12 million.

The first renovated A340 is now operating since the beginning of this November. Its 229-Economy Class seats were totally replaced with new seats and equipped with Seat Integrated Technology (SiT), the new, state-of-the-art Audio Video On Demand (AVOD) In-Flight Entertainment system.

The airline's aircraft carry the names of Their Royal Highnesses the Princes and Princesses, in addition to tourist and archeological Jordanian cities.

Royal Jordanian to restart flights to Berlin in June 2011

State-backed airline Royal Jordanian (RJ) is to recommence flights to the German city of Berlin from June 2011, the carrier announced on Tuesday.

The Amman-based airline’s flights to the German capital come ten years after direct services between the two cities were discontinued.

“There is growth in demand for travel between the Jordanian and German capitals, mainly due to the increased movement of tourists from Germany to the kingdom,” said RJ president and CEO Hussein Dabbas.

“At the same time, progress is seen in the exports industry and commercial activities, which increases demand for travel by businessmen and citizens of the two countries,” he added.

Operating on a Airbus A320 aircraft, RJ will operate two flights per week to Berlin from June 2011, in addition to the three weekly flights to Munich and daily flights to Frankfurt. Berlin will be the 59th destination for the Jordanian flag carrier.

The addition of Air Berlin joins to the oneworld airline alliance in early 2012 will also mean that RJ passengers will be able to continue their flights beyond Berlin around the European mainland, Dabbas added.

In October, RJ reported that profits for the first nine months of 2010 fell by nearly 25 percent on the back of rising fuel and operational costs.

The national airline reported revenue of JD516m ($727.27m) for the nine months to 30 September, 2010, up 14.6 percent from JD450m ($634.25m) in the same period last year.

Net profits in the same period fell 23.5 percent to JD19.5m ($27.48m), according to figures quoted by Jordan state news agency Petra, hit by rising fuel and operational costs.

According to the airline, its fuel bill rose by 37 percent to JD151m ($212.97m) over the nine-month period. Operating costs rose by 19.5 percent in the same period, the carrier said.

Royal Jordanian wins the Airline of the Year 2010 Award from Arabian Business

On November 30, Royal Jordanian won the Airline of the Year 2010 Award at the Arabian Business Achievement Awards 2010 held at the Armani Hotel in Burj Khalifa, Dubai, and hosted by ITP, the publishers of Arabian Business magazine, to celebrate the best achievers in Arab business, both at corporate and at individual levels. This year's ceremony was held in the presence of HRH Princess Ameerah, spouse of HRH Prince Alwaleed.

Arabian Business magazine, Middle East's leading weekly business publication, selected Royal Jordanian as the winner of the Airline of the Year Award 2010, which is presented to the airline that has shown quality services in the region, and undertaken expansion plans during 2010.

The Arabian Business Awards have been presented for 11 years, and are the most prestigious in the business calendar. This year's awards spanned 17 categories, including technology, media, retail and the sought-after titles of Businessman and Businesswoman of the Year. The editorial team decides on three nominations per category, and the winners are then chosen by the judges.

Over the last three years, Etihad Airways (2009), Air Arabia (2008) and Emirates Airline (2007) won the Airline of the Year Award.

Anil Bhoyrul, editorial director, Arabian Business magazine, said: "This is always a very tough category, and whilst the judges commended the work of the traditional big names in the industry, they felt that Royal Jordanian had provided the best service in the region. They were also impressed by how the airline has continued to grow, and its expansion plans for the future. Over 800 entries were received for this year's awards."

RJ President/CEO Hussein Dabbas said Royal Jordanian is happy and grateful for having obtained this prestigious award. He thanked Arabian Business for honoring RJ with this important award, and the judging committee that saw RJ deserving it.

He said: "To be the Airline of the Year is a distinction we are proud of, a global recognition of our company's worth, of its state-of-the-art facilities and of the luxury offered on board our young fleet."

Dabbas said several modern IT systems were implemented during 2010 that greatly improved the overall performance of the airline, including reservation and ticketing, inventory, ticket pricing, and human resources. He added that the 30-aircraft fleet has witnessed great expansion in 2010 with the introduction of two Airbus A330 and an Embraer 175 aircraft.

Moreover, RJ is constantly reviewing its route network, in line with its policy of gradual expansion; its direct destinations increase by approximately two a year. In 2010, RJ added Madinah, in Saudi Arabia, and Kuala Lumpur, in Malaysia, to its destinations. It recently announced that it will re-open its direct, regular service to Berlin after 10 years, suspended as a result of a feasibility study. New routes are planned for the coming two years, which will mean greater coverage and more flexible choices to passengers.

Currently, the airline serves a network of direct routes to 58 international destinations and a broader network covered by theoneworld airline alliance that reaches to more than 750 points in almost 150 countries around the world.

The RJ president pointed out that the company is proud of this award, which it will take as an incentive to at least maintain the high-level standards. "It is also an invaluable tool to promote our business, to which we dedicate ourselves wholeheartedly," he said.

Arabian Business is the biggest selling weekly magazine in the Middle East, with 55,000 copies a week in both English and Arabic. The website is the largest-reach business website in the region, with 5 million page impressions per month and 1.8 million unique visitors per month.

Royal Jordanian to expand into Sub-Saharan Africa

Royal Jordanian (RJ) is planning further expansion into the African market in 2011, with Nigeria the first route under consideration, the carrier’s CEO told Arabian Business on Tuesday.

The Amman based airline launches two new routes each year and earlier this week it announced that it would start flying to Berlin from June 2011.

“The second destination we are looking at is Lagos in Nigeria,” Hussein Dabbas, RJ’s president and CEO said on the sidelines of the Arabian Business Awards in Dubai.

“We intend to do that. If it doesn’t work for Lagos we will look at another African destination,” he added.

The airline already flies to Khartoum in Sudan, Tripoli in Libya and Tunis in Tunisia and Cairo, Alexandria and Sharm El Sheikh in Egypt, but Nigeria will be its first expansion into Sub-Saharan Africa.

“We have no proper connection with Africa and we are seeing that the African continent is up and coming, economically and the people have started to have a lot of disposable income to travel.

“We would like to expand into the black continent to expand more on the network and connect the African nations with Jordan and the Middle East,” Dabbas said.

To facilitate its growth, RJ is planning to expand its fleet and was the first Middle East carrier to order a Boeing 787 Dreamliner aircraft.

The Dreamliner eventually made its maiden flight in late 2009, two years late, but Dabbas is not concerned and said RJ will take delivery of its first Dreamliner aircraft in 2013.

“The first aircraft we expect to arrive on September 2013, we believe we should be receiving four of them and the fifth will arrive in 2014 and then we will not receive any until 2015 onwards.

RJ has 11 on order in total and Dabbas is confident that any further delays by Boeing will not affect its delivery schedule: “Any delay will, supposedly, not affect our delivery dates because we are talking about three years from now so we believe we will be receiving them on time.”

Despite its growth in routes and aircraft, RJ reported that profits for the first nine months of 2010 fell by nearly 25 percent on the back of rising fuel and operational costs.

However, Dabbas said that while the fuel bill had risen by 37 percent, passenger numbers were up 16 percent and the carrier expects to make a “decent profit” for 2010.

RJ is hurting real bad, and for one reason. The delay in the 787-800.

RJ had planned their entire fleet around these aircraft, due to delays they had to keep the A310's in service longer than they intended, they lost money on every flight - because the aircraft was outdated. They had to lease 2 A330's - which are not cheap, they had to re-fit their A340's.

All these costs have resulted in routes being cut back, which is really sad to see - especially considering the new airport will be up and running next year.

I can only hope RJ can turn this around.

The 787 is a wide body. RJ ordered/leased 11 in total. The first was to arrive in 2012 (before all the Boeing delays) the first aircraft is expected at the end of 2014 now :ohno:

Royal Jordanian Airlines launched flights to Algiers.

The twice weekly flights to the Algerian capital, on Monday and Wednesdays, will feed other routes in the region including Jeddah and Medina, targeting Algerian Muslims traveling to the Saudi Arabian holy cities for hajj and umrah pilgrimages.

Royal Jordanian said market research indicated that the route could help it capitalise on Algerians seeking specialist medical treatment in Jordan.

“The Algiers route will see active traffic to the kingdom from medical tourists. Jordan is fast becoming a very attractive destination for medical tourism in the region,” a statement said.

A third flight, scheduled for Thursdays, will begin April 1.
