Julito-dubai April 11th, 2008, 07:02 PM can anybody tell me which project in Dubai is similar to 880 million sq. feet?
another picture here. Sheikh Mohammed stands a bit in the way in this one...

this could also be on the camel racecourse....
The-King April 11th, 2008, 07:16 PM WOW! 880 million square feet!? That's 11 times bigger than The Lagoons!!!! Thank you for your translation Julito-Dubai. looks like another project with canals and lots of greenery, amazing!!! I think I will love it! Could that be that connection from Arabian Canal to the Dubai Creek which was announced a long time ago?
Julito-dubai April 11th, 2008, 07:36 PM could be.
compared to Manhattan island:
Manhattan: ca. 58 mio. square km
the new project: 81.75 mio. square km
Manhattan is only 70 percent of the new project. Could be the largest city park in the world!!!
another comparison: Formentera, the smallest of the Balearen Islands is only slightly bigger
(83 km2)
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/e/e7/Formentera_sat.png
Julito-dubai April 11th, 2008, 07:54 PM correction; it WILL BE the worlds largest city park. Bigger than South Mountain Park in Phoenix, Arizona. Which was considered to be the largest one according to this website with 17.000 acres or 68.8 km2
http://www.phoenixasap.com/south-mountain-park.html
smussuw April 11th, 2008, 09:47 PM yea, I wonder where this project will be located !!
smussuw April 11th, 2008, 10:01 PM Could Jumeirah Garden City part of it?
They mention also a humanitarian city, could it be the one now south to Burj Dubai development and near business bay?
It could also be the camel racecourse as Julito-dubai said !!
The-King April 11th, 2008, 10:09 PM Hi,
I'm very sure I found out the projects location. The area marked in red is exactly 81 sq. km and there aren't any developments planned for this area yet. When this location is right it is the biggest landrefill project ever for Dubai and it will operate as a 'bridge' between old Dubai and Dubailand:

THE DUBAI GUYS April 11th, 2008, 10:31 PM interesting...its going to be all green both plant wise and environment wise then this seems cool! and its HUGE!
R
Julito-dubai April 12th, 2008, 01:49 AM well king should be right then. hopefully the Camel Racecourse will be reserved for Godolphin City Phase 2,3,4 etc.
stupid that business 24/7 is down. otherwise they might have some good pictures tomorrow morning....

It is nice to have Phoenix mentioned in a Dubai thread!!
Sorry, but I could not help myself.

But, wouldn't it actually be the opposite of environmental? Turning a natural desert into an area full of many fields and trees will result in a great increase in water usage. I am not sure this is a gread idea for a region that may be facing water shortages with an increasing population.
GoDubai! April 12th, 2008, 07:36 AM I had heard sometime back from a landscape engineer that the royals were planning a park area bigger than the city of Paris. I guess this is it. But I don't get the "four houses" thing in the blurb. It doesn't really sound like it will be a very public area like a park. It really doesn't sound anything like a New York Central Park.

The Commercial "house" is FULL of MORE skyscrapers!!
And get this... each "House" will sit on it's own island!!
I also think that this thread, (along with the Meydan thread) needs it's own sub section on the main page....
These projects, ie. Mohammed Bin Rashid Gardens, Meydan and Godolphin River City are going to be HUGE new developments with hundreds and hundreds of towers and sub projects....

bizzybonita April 13th, 2008, 02:59 AM great add for dubai ...
BinDubai April 13th, 2008, 03:56 AM well the best thing about the project that its not a X City like the rest :D , they called it Gardens instead of city :D
smussuw April 13th, 2008, 06:37 AM Hi,
I'm very sure I found out the projects location. The area marked in red is exactly 81 sq. km and there aren't any developments planned for this area yet. You are probably right.
According to the Chairman of Dubai Properties, this project will be located between Al Khail road and Emirates road. So the area you highlighted is the only one that represent that.
Face81 April 13th, 2008, 08:47 AM Here you all go....

The House of Wisdom:
http://i27.tinypic.com/iyhssm.jpg
It's absolutely massive!!!!! And the shapes of those new islands are so cool!
A new sub forum is required for all these MASSIVE projects in South Dubai. So far we have Meydan, Meydan City, Godolphin River City and Mohammed Bin Rashi Gardens. And I have a feeling projects worth $ Billions more are in the pipeline....
Face81 April 13th, 2008, 09:06 AM And here's a better idea of where this mega projects sits, relative to the rest of Dubai...

A.U.S. arch. germantower April 13th, 2008, 01:04 PM What a video have you noticed the real big one at the spheric structure? seems to be a new superduperhypertall for Dubai.
Julito-dubai April 13th, 2008, 01:13 PM at least we now know that the canal is not connected to the Arabian Canal. At least on this simulation. and that the above map is slightly wrong as it would include parts of al barsha. Instead the gardens take up the remaining part of the Camel Racecourse or what i once found as Business Bay "Phase 5".
Face81 April 13th, 2008, 01:16 PM OMG!
I love the MEGA Sheikh Mohammed Mosque along the boulevard with all those countries flags and that MONSTER tower in the background. It looks HUGE!!!! WAY WAY bigger than the Burj Dubai or Al Burj!
Face81 April 13th, 2008, 01:17 PM at least we now know that the canal is not connected to the Arabian Canal.
For now atleast ;) Remember that old video from nakheel which showed everything linked to the Arabian Canal?
So this development will extend along the canal going past meydan....
http://i29.tinypic.com/1zoi2qs.jpg
malec April 13th, 2008, 01:19 PM This seems like a pretty random project. The renders in that video look great but I wonder if it would all get done.
I don't get how they can call this an eco project when they're planting a rain forest in a place where one wouldn't grow naturally.
In the video there seems to be another mega-tall, and it's bigger than the one in the commercial district but seems more like a structure than a building.
smussuw April 13th, 2008, 01:21 PM ^^ what video?
smussuw April 13th, 2008, 01:24 PM simply amazing! alot alot of canals I wonder if they are connected to the ocean, BB creek, meydan, godolphin, or a longshot lol A.C., ect (hopefully theyll all be connected) hopefully stagnation will not happen in these canals. from the video presentation it looks like the venice of 2050.
Go on sheikh mohammeds website great video of this project
Don't forget that the area between the first interchange and the third interchange will have three canals that goes to the sea, the Jumeirah Garden City.

Julito-dubai April 13th, 2008, 03:42 PM The canal will be called "Dubai Union Canal". You can see it in the background of the video

Naz UK April 13th, 2008, 06:39 PM ^^ Well, with the abundance of friendly Asian construction workers who are almost willing to do the job for free, and dirt-cheap construction raw material costs, the answer is very soon and very soon, I would imagine.
smussuw April 13th, 2008, 10:09 PM ^^ 3 months to be specific, at least according to Dubai Properties chairman.

undercoverdubaione2 April 14th, 2008, 07:02 PM dubai's 200 billion-dirham ($54.4 billion) eco real estate project could be located between Al Khail Road and Emirates Road on a huge area of as yet undeveloped land, internet reports claim.
The massive 82-square kilometre project would border Downtown Burj Dubai to the north and Dubailand to the south.
According to internet reports the area of land, pictured, fits the exact size of the development.
The project, called Mohammed bin Rashid Gardens, is being developed by Dubai Properties, part of state-owned conglomerate Dubai Holding.
Dubai Properties was not immediately available for comment when contacted by ArabianBusiness.com.
Mohammed bin Rashid Gardens will be made up of four main clusters themed around wisdom, humanity, nature and commerce, with 73% of the total area - roughly 60 square kilometres - to be covered in greenery.
Models of the development, pictured, show huge areas of greenery interspersed with large lakes and canals.
Most of the clusters have a group of buildings with a tower at their centre and are surrounded by parks and waterways.
The biggest cluster will be the House of Nature. This will include parks, flower gardens, recreational clubs, a zoo, hotels, environmental labs and alternative medicine and herbal healing clinics.
The project will be carried out in six stages. No date has yet been given for when construction will begin.

bizzybonita April 15th, 2008, 11:07 PM Dubai unveils $54bn eco real estate project
Dubai has launched a ambitious 200 billion-dirham ($54.4 billion) environmentally friendly real estate project stretching over 82 square kilometres, state news agency Wam reported on Friday.
The project, called Mohammed bin Rashid Gardens, will be made up of four main clusters themed around wisdom, humanity, nature and commerce, with 73% of the total area - roughly 60 square kilometres - to be covered in greenery.
The biggest cluster will be the House of Nature. This will include parks, flower gardens, recreational clubs, a zoo, hotels, environmental labs and alternative medicine and herbal healing clinics.
The House of Wisdom will include a library, international universities, history and science colleges and the Sheikh Mohammed Mosque.
The House of Humanity will include the Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Humanitarian and Charity Establishment, the Museum of Light, the Human Civilisation Museum and other charities such as Unicef.
The House of Commerce will include banks, financial services firms and insurance companies, as well as higher educational institutions that specialise in banking and finance.
Dubai Properties, part of state-owned conglomerate Dubai Holding, will oversee the project, which will be carried out in six stages.
Dubai Holding CEO Mohammed Abdullah Al Gergawi, also UAE minister of cabinet affairs, said was aimed at creating a "clean environment free from pollution to safeguard health of coming generations", quoted Wam.
Wam did not say in its report where the project will be located or when construction will begin.

So we will have a via canals connected Dubai from the waterfront to the upper parts of the Palm Deira...this city will be the best ever witnessed in the whole history of mankind....cant wait until this all is finished

I'm very sure I found out the projects location. The area marked in red is exactly 81 sq. km and there aren't any developments planned for this area yet. When this location is right it is the biggest landrefill project ever for Dubai
Second biggest after Dubai World Central at 120 sq. km's ;)

Julito-dubai April 16th, 2008, 02:05 PM Architecture is the New Diplomacy. The Mohammed Bin Rashid Gardens capture the spirit of Civic Design, creating new hope for the Middle East by restoring the soul of Arabian civilization to the heart of its cities.
Enlightened leadership has filled history with grand precedents for such grand designs. By ordering his Persian capital to be moved to Isfahan, Shah Abbas I realised a vision for his parks, gardens and libraries of Nisf-e-Jahan (Half the World) to reflect the heavens above.
As Domenico Fontana was to Pope Sixtus V’s Rome; Peter the Great to St Petersburg; L'Enfant to Washington DC; Hausmann to Napolean III's Paris; Frederick Law Olmstead to Manhattan; Edwin Lutyens to New Delhi; and Walter Burley Griffin to Canberra, so Sheikh Mohammed’s vision for a new Dubai will redefine the quality of civic life for the citizens, residents and guests of the Arabian Gulf.”
Eric Kuhne
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The City: The Mohammed Bin Rashid Gardens represent the most innovative approach to urban form to be found anywhere in the Middle East. Celebrating the intricate geometry of Arabian art and science its 56 million square feet of verdant parks and gardens divide an 880 million square foot city into a network of sustainable neighbourhoods, each containing the molecule of daily life. Scaled around walk-able distances that provide easy access to food, healthcare and education, this enlightened model of urban planning will help reverse the Gulf’s existing commuter culture that has eroded both communities and the environment.
The Form: The Mohammed Bin Rashid Gardens offer a culturally resonant alternative to the sterile Western-style street grids that currently dominate the Middle East. They replace those rigid, rectilinear lines with the sweeping arcs and circles of the planispheric astrolabe; an instrument perfected by Islamic scholars, craftsmen and astronomers. Fusing the spheres of art and astronomy into an intricate object of enduring beauty, the astrolabe represents one of the greatest leaps of human imagination. It maps the movements of celestial bodies through the vastness of space, etching them onto a brass plate that can be held in the palm of the hand. Dubai is likewise a product of great imagination: A royal vision for a modern city that has risen from an ancient land. To base a new city plan upon an object embodying 2000 years of human invention is to build upon the bedrock of civilisation itself.
The Gardens: A literal translation of the astrolabe’s ornate brass rete, the city’s parks and gardens form a lush green net that catches all the cultural and residential districts within its spreading strands. The lungs of the city, these linear public parks act as carbon sinks that purify the surrounding air while providing shaded ‘green corridors’ that support sustainable modes of transport. Drawing upon the rich heritage of Islamic landscape design the Mohammed Bin Rashid Gardens will be a city of canals and fountains, pools and lakes. Their cooling surfaces shall temper the heat of the day, while the sound of trickling water will help create oases of calm amidst the busy metropolis. With garlands of golf courses, bridleways, cycle paths and promenades, the citizens will have ample opportunity to enjoy a healthy active lifestyle.

The Canals: Carving the patterns of the heavens into the desert sands the Union Canal describes the celestial path of the Milky Way. Flowing inland from Dubai Creek it describes a wide arc across the Mohammed Bin Rashid Gardens before rejoining the waters of the Gulf once more. Cutting across its meandering course, the dramatic diagonal of the Grand Axial Canal points to way to the holy city of Mecca, furbishing the city with a permanent means of spiritual alignment. Reversing the current trend for reclaiming land from sea these canals bring water to the desert, transforming the arid dunes into valuable real estate. Unifying the city’s masterplan this 21st century navigation functions as both urban artery and leisure amenity, open to citizen and visitor alike. Creating miles of lively democratic waterfronts the Union Canal will be the envy of the world.
The Centres: In orbit around the Garden Ring, three distinctive geometries announce the presence of the Houses of Humanity, Nature and Commerce; all centres of excellence within their respective fields. Surrounded by circular lakes they form grand termini for the separate branches of the Union Canal that reach out to every corner of the city. Their watery frames serve to highlight the geometry of their forms, all drawn from the rich vocabulary of Arabian design.
The 9-pointed star of the House of Humanity will become home to the Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Humanitarian Establishment. Supporting the charitable goals of this institution will be the offices for UNICEF and other global charities, complemented by permanent museums along the themes of humanity and civilisation.
The distinctive crescent moon of the House of Nature will encompass an extensive family resort, integrated with wildlife parks and zoological research facilities. In this way, the wonders of the natural world will be brought to a wider public via eco-tourism, while providing the subjects for scientific observation. Specialised environmental laboratories and colleges will sit opposite hotels and entertainment clubs, while the generous pleasure gardens will provide flowers and herbs for clinics researching alternative medicines and natural remedies.
Responding to the everyday needs of office workers the amenities of the House of Commerce will allow them to shop, dine and relax, all within one square mile. This integrated approach will improve the quality of everyday life for thousands of employees, giving them the flexibility to achieve their perfect live/work balance. With its cluster of signature towers housing major financial institutions in banking, brokerage and insurance the House’s 8-pointed star will become a landmark in international business affairs.
The Centrepiece: Acting as the cultural lynch pin of Dubai’s knowledge economy, the circular Bait Al Hikma (House of Wisdom) will house a university campus whose grand central library and translation unit will continue the legacy of its illustrious namesake. Its central architectural element, inspired by a unique spherical astrolabe, offers up an iconic form that makes the link between the Islamic Golden Age and the modern world. Working in unison, the campus mosque, university and library will bring the rich heritage of Arabian scholastic excellence out of the archives and into light, for all the world to share.
Legacy: With its integrated collection of artful civic forms and iconic infrastructure the masterplan for the Mohammed Bin Rashid Gardens offers a sustainable model for the future. Raised in such enlightened surroundings Dubai’s next generation will be well equipped to participate in the market place of ideas that is driving our 21st century world.

FM 2258 April 16th, 2008, 04:48 PM But, wouldn't it actually be the opposite of environmental? Turning a natural desert into an area full of many fields and trees will result in a great increase in water usage. I am not sure this is a gread idea for a region that may be facing water shortages with an increasing population.
If they used solar or wind powered desalination they could use all the water they want. This would be an environmental success as well as a beauty.

I doubt it. Al Burj is by Nakheel, and this project is by Dubai Properties. I am not sure if Nakheel would want its own property to be developed by someone else. But, you never know. Sheikh Mohammed has the authority to move the location of the building if he wants to.

Satwa was to be replaced by a low density green belt, but I love this high density proposition (even if it turns out to be a false render). Dubai needs a hell of a lot more high rises if it is going to be a great city of 4 M by 2015 and 6 M by 2020.
Great pictures -thankyou! A visual treat! Its made my day.:)
malec April 17th, 2008, 01:16 PM But this project takes up the area where godolphin city is supposed to be. I'm not complaining, since this is much better. But still it's weird. How come godolphin city was hardly in the news at all?

And why don't the press cover either of these projects more? Good question! I think people are not impressed with such MEGA projects in Dubai any more. Who knows?!
Opus 2009 April 17th, 2008, 01:47 PM ^^
The red outline should probably include the Ras al Khor industrial area as well. Sama sent a letter out explaining dealys to the Lagoons project and one of these was the relocation of Ral Al Khor. Or maybe that area is meant for a future development - but I thought it might have been the Godolphin River City.
Julito-dubai April 17th, 2008, 04:04 PM could be, but the add in the newspaper clearly showed Godolphin to go towards business bay. This could nevertheless be the best solution anyway...
malec April 17th, 2008, 11:22 PM It's definitely either godolphin city goes ahead and the masterplan for this project isn't right. Or else godolphin city won't happen.
Thing is, they've already started digging the canal for the godolphin project.
The location is clear in this picture.

dubai 26 April 18th, 2008, 09:42 AM Yes they will relocate Ras al Khor industrial area.
Also Al ramool industrial area will be dimolished and Emar will build something there.
Face81 April 18th, 2008, 09:44 AM ^^ Malec, no!!!! :)
GRC gets its own seperate canal link to Dubai Creek, which is CLEARLY visible on the top right hand corner of the picture you posted. The Main canal for this project is linked to Dubai Creek, VIA the Business Bay extension... Look carefully at the maps :)
Both projects are going ahead and do not overlap in any way.

The-King April 18th, 2008, 11:22 AM that map should be right malec, but the masterplan of GRC don't fits into Mohammed bin rashid Gardens, maybe they have redesigned it?
Face81 April 18th, 2008, 12:59 PM GRC is just to the right of what you have marked, Malec, it sits right on the edge of Mohammed Bin Rashid Gardens. That's my interpretation of the masterplan anyway....
Tavik April 18th, 2008, 03:40 PM I agree with malec.
He drawn correct map.
I think that Gardens will be redesigned - to fit the Godolphin River City.... Or maybe they will even cancel GRC.

THE DUBAI GUYS April 19th, 2008, 02:42 PM Dubai launches Garden City
Published: 13 April 2008 12:22 GMT Author: Colin Foreman More by this Author Last Updated: 14 April 2008 06:32
Dubai has launched a AED200bn ($54bn) new city project aimed at creating more green and parkland areas in the emirate.
Known as Mohammed bin Rashid Gardens, the 88-square-kilometre project will be built by local developer Dubai Properties, between Al-Khail road and Emirates road from its existing Business Bay project and the Arabian Ranches roundabout area on Emirates road.
"It will be located between Al-Khail road and Emirates road. The easiest way to think about it is as an extension to Business Bay," Dubai Properties chairman Hashim al-Dabal told MEED on 13 April.
The project is still in the masterplan stages, and Dubai Properties has already begun coordinating with the authorities ahead of construction work starting on site.
"We expect to finalise the masterplan in three to six months," Al-Dabal said.
The project is expected to be made up of four main clusters themed around wisdom, humanity, nature and commerce.
Some 73 per cent of the total area - roughly 60 square kilometres - will be covered in greenery.
The city may also have a canal running through it from the proposed Arabian Canal planned by Dubai-based developer Limitless and the Business Bay Creek extension that is being built by Dubai Properties and the Roads & Transport Authority.
Plans for this canal, formerly known as the Union canal project, have been mooted for several years.

bizzybonita May 4th, 2008, 01:34 PM Dubai properties to move ahead on Rashid Garden despite cost pressures
Mr Hashim Al Dabal executive chairman of Dubai Properties said that the development of its AED 200 billion mega eco project Mohammed bin Rashid Gardens will not be impacted by soaring construction costs.
Mr Al Dabal said that "There are always big challenges when building in Dubai, sometimes its supply and demand or prices going up or location issues. But there is always a solution, we worry about the market as a whole, not it terms of just one cost area."
Mr Al Dabal said that Dubai Properties would finance the initial work on the project and seek outside investment later on in its development. He added that "Here we will use a two stage strategy where the infrastructure will be funded by the company and later on we will engage other developers and market investors for another source of funding."
The four clusters, themed around wisdom, nature, humanity and commerce, will each have an iconic building at their centers. The House of Wisdom will include a library, international universities, history and science colleges and the Sheikh Mohammed Mosque. The House of Humanity will include the Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum humanitarian & charity establishment, the museum of light, the human civilization museum and other charities such as UNICEF. The House of Commerce will include banks, financial services firms and insurance companies, as well as higher educational institutions that specialize in banking and finance. Dubai Properties will oversee the project, which will be carried out in 6 stages.
It may be noted that labor and raw material costs have soared in the UAE over the last year due to record high oil prices and the falling value of the US dollar, to which the dirham is pegged, putting further pressure on developers already struggling to finish projects on time and on budget.

Dubai's Mohammed bin Rashid Gardens
Further details of Dubai's new $54bn Mohammed bin Rashid Gardens have been revealed, with the new development bearing a strong visual resemblance to Kuwait's City of Silk project.
http://i26.tinypic.com/23udf9u.jpg
Kuwait's City of Silk
A number of companies were involved in the development of the masterplan, according to Rashid Al-Awadhi, principle architect with Injaz, a member of Dubai Properties.
One of those, he said, was Eric Kuhne's UK-based Civic Arts, which was involved in the initial concept design. Civic Arts is the designer of the 250 square-kilometre City of Silk.
Mohammed Bin Rashid Gardens is to be located between Emirates Road and Al-Khail Road, and will measure 88 square kilometres.
Featuring 73 per cent green space and 10 per cent waterways, the low-density development is to be built over six phases.
The first two - covering infrastructure and parks - are to be implemented immediately, following approval from the ministry and contractors being signed up. This is expected to take place within the next few months.
Hashim Al-Dabal, chairman of Dubai Properties, said: "We are comfortable, if we sign contractors to build the roads and bridges, that a timescale of two to three years is satisfactory. As a whole project, I estimate the first two phases will take between five and seven years."
The project will also feature a 42-kilometre canal, to run from phase 3 of Business Bay into the Arabian Gulf.
Kuwait's City of Silk
Al-Awadhi added that Dubai Properties is looking at various forms of water transportation to connect Mohammed Bin Rashid Gardens with other projects in Dubai.
Al-Dabal stressed that the project is illustrative of Dubai's ambition to meet the growing sustainable agenda. "Seventy-three per cent of green area takes a lot to deliver, and we are having to give away a lot of land for nature, which could otherwise be developed on."
The inevitable demands placed on water supply will be met by a combination of desert-type flora and fauna, which are acclimatised to the region, and plants which can survive through the natural moisture in the air alone.
The system of civic parks, which will be a feature of the development, will be supplied with grey water produced by the residents.
The project will consist of four sections:
*The House of Nature - the main cluster of the development, featuring gardens, environmental labs, recreational clubs and alternative medicine and herbal clinics
*The House of Wisdom - to include Dubai Central Library, international organisations and universities and science colleges
*The House of Humanity - to feature charities, humanitarian establishments and a museum
*The House of Commerce - includes banking and finance schools as well as branches of insurance companies, international companies and Islamic and international banks.

maherk May 10th, 2008, 08:57 PM Hey folks,
Recently I am showing interest in investing in projects in dubai.
This seriously sounds like a long term engagement and maybe the best project ever developed by Dubai.
Usually when is a good time to check for an investment opp, as I was reading and I understood that the infrastructure alone would take around 5 to 7 years to complete. Does that mean that after this period we can start contacting developers?
Any help is appreciated as am new to this whole thing.
Best Regards,

I love all the low rise building dotted by supertalls but on the downside the supertalls might take away from the "Washington Monument" Structure I think. Just like in D.C. nothing should be taller than the monument in this project. anyways from what ive seen so far this looks like planning at its best

bizzybonita September 3rd, 2008, 11:53 PM Water will be the lifeblood of the new garden city
http://business24-7.ae/Articles/2008/9/PublishingImages/9_3_2008/eb25_mbrgardens_03p4_small.jpg
The plan includes homes, and educational and commercial facilities. (SUPPLIED)
Supporting a new city of more than a quarter of a million people with a system of waterways, parks and gardens will represent the largest formal urban masterplan in the southern Gulf, said CivicArts, the architectural firm for Mohammed bin Rashid Gardens, in a press release yesterday.
With an estimated construction cost of more than $60 billion (Dh220.4bn), the Mohammed bin Rashid Gardens, is destined to be one of the world's most ambitious urban projects, said the firm. The logistics of physically building such an immense development are matched by the monumental scale of the water management needed to transform the desert into a lush oasis, it said.
Tackling the challenge in a holistic fashion, the masterplan weaves water into the social fabric of a 21st century city, where the interests of transportation, recreation and environment will go hand in hand.
The master plan for the new city, designed by Eric Kuhne of the London-based CivicArts and unveiled by His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, incorporates provision for homes, educational, financial and commercial facilities, iconic civic buildings, tourist landscapes and more parkland than can be found in London and New York combined.
"Water will be the lifeblood of this new city, pumped through a network of canals, pools and waterways creating a waterfront that will be unrivalled in the Middle East," said Kuhne.
The canal system, which will be navigable, will support life on many levels, providing wildlife habitats and numerous opportunities for leisure and recreation.
With 150km of waterfront and wetlands, the Central Union Canal will give the city's ecosystem the capacity to support a range of living creatures on a scale unprecedented in the Middle East. Canals, lakes, waterways and retention and detention ponds will all provide perfect habitats for the procreation and protection of aquatic and terrestrial wildlife.
The master plan allows for a variety of waterway edges, including keystone walls with integrated planters, stepped terraces that will provide upper-level dining, mid-level cycle paths and lower-level walkways and gabion walls that can be planted with marginal and aquatic plants and set with boulders to create a natural, informal character.
There will also be beach and detention ponds – shallow ponds that allow easy access to the canal and will facilitate the provision of public beaches and informal lawn areas.
Planted shelves, featuring shallow pools with aquatic and marginal planting, will create attractive green strips along the water's edge.
Throughout the Union Canal, reeded biotope edges will combine engineered (chemical) and planted (biological) filtration systems to clean and recycle the water.
The extensive use of water in Islamic architecture is not a new concept. Historically, Middle Eastern architects were inspired by the ancient cosmological model of the universe in four quarters divided by two great rivers and canals and pools were integral to the design of courtyards, palaces, terraces and squares. Fountains were common features; evoking images of oases and springs.
Similarly, at Mohammed bin Rashid Gardens, the water channels, fountains and pools have become the organising elements of the extensive gardens and the uniquely Arabian pattern of parkways and canals has been inspired by the astrolabes, which once charted the heavens but have now become symbols of geometry for this new city.
The core element in the design is the Grand Canal that will wind its way from Dubai Creek and Business Bay through the astrolabe pattern to the heart of Mohammed bin Rashid Gardens before the waters return to the Gulf. The design means that residents, workers and visitors to the new city will never be far from gardens or water and the circling canals, culminating in a dramatic Grand Central Fountain, will be a unifying element.
From the outset, the main options for supplying water to the city have been either using the canal as a conduit or pumping the water under the sands. Using the canal means transferring seawater to the summit pound of the main canal, which lies 15 metres above sea level and also supplies the Grand Canal on the Mecca Axis. Using this method, the canal would be used to transfer water, employing bypass pipelines at key locks to obtain the hydraulic head needed to feed lower parts of the system. Pumps would provide water to the higher level.
The other option of delivering seawater by means of pipelines to the highest on-site elevation of 25 metres above sea level would mean water transfer throughout the network being achieved solely by gravity. This option allows for flexible positioning of water intakes, allowing the canal's route to bypass highly developed areas.
The water and power strategies will be supported by low water usage and energy-efficient buildings. Building control systems, combined with water and energy-efficient fittings, will minimise demand. Intelligently designed façades will maximise the use of natural light and buildings will integrate solar technologies to supply hot water as well as local cooling for those residences not connected to city-wide district cooling networks.
The city design will incorporate an unprecedented level of water recycling. Sophisticated water treatment will generate a non-potable water supply that will drive down potable water demand and a treated effluent stream will meet irrigation needs. Greening the city with parks, canals and ponds will attract migratory birds, enhancing local and global biodiversity. Planting will create cool corridors for walking and riding, said Kuhne.
Gregorious September 5th, 2008, 07:55 PM the hardest things to make in this project i think are the waterways and all that greenery!

THE DUBAI GUYS September 14th, 2008, 05:38 PM Dubai Properties to start work on garden city in 2009
Last Updated: 14 September 2008 07:54 Reader Responses
Local developer Dubai Properties plans to start infrastructure works on its AED200bn ($54bn) Mohammed bin Rashid Gardens project at the start of 2009.
The 88-square kilometre project will be built between Al-Khail road and Emirates road from its existing Business Bay project and the Arabian Ranches roundabout area on Emirates road.
The plan for the project was recently approved by Dubai Municipality, and plans for roads and other transportation systems are being finalised with the Roads & Transportation Authority.
The project is expected to be made up of four main clusters themed around wisdom, humanity, nature and commerce.
About 73 per cent of the total area - approximately 60 square kilometres - will be covered in vegetation.
The city also has a canal running through it from the Business Bay Creek extension that is being built by Dubai Properties and the Roads & Transport Authority, leading into the Gulf in the Al-Sufouh area (MEED 5:5:08).

jonovision September 17th, 2008, 06:19 PM I really love this project. I think it is beautiful and the design quality is astounding. I do however truly question the ability for an ecosystem that is currently a desert to truly support such a large and lush oasis. Can we really convert a desert like that? And if we do, what about all the inevitable evaporation and extra water that would be needed to supplement that. Then there's all the energy requirements to keep these areas full of water. I just can't see it as being sustainable.
malec September 17th, 2008, 11:02 PM ^^ Well, the canals are just sea water. Don't know about all the greenery though
Wannaberich September 18th, 2008, 08:11 PM This is a fanatastic project. If they can sustain it then wow.I guess it will take a long time to complete.

Mohammed Bin Rashid Gardens, Dubai

A.U.S. arch. Student December 6th, 2008, 10:29 PM never built, on hold, or just delayed
docc December 7th, 2008, 08:33 AM Just delayed. This is without doubt one of the grandest developments in the world and a legacy that Sheikh Mo will leave behind, to remembered for centuries ahead. I believe it will be started at a more opportune time and will take over 20 years to complete, so there's really no reason to rush this. There are other projects that require greater attention as of now.

The-King November 3rd, 2009, 11:36 PM yes that already happend many months ago. It was visible from satellite images and several aerial photos almost a year ago, however nothing changed since that.
Chakazoolu November 4th, 2009, 06:23 AM Yeah I spotted it on the satellite pics, but couldnt tell if it was a road or what. I drove down there the other week but could be bothered to walk from the road adjacent to it.
I did see just 1 excavator digging at the end of the channel.... but mosy likely its related to road works or something.
Imre November 4th, 2009, 06:25 AM yes, some infrastructure works there, when I driving around that area I always see trucks there.

Dubai thought it was going to grow up to be the Arab Singapore—a commercial, banking, and insurance service port on the Gulf with hospitality and footballers’ time-shares, an oasis of R&R for the less well endowed. But it hasn’t quite worked out. The vertical streets of offices are empty. A derelict skyscraper looks exactly the same as one that’s teeming with commerce. They huddle around the current tallest building in the world—a monument to small-nation penis envy. This pylon erected with the Viagra of credit is now a big, naked exclamation of Dubai’s fiscal embarrassment. It was going to be called Burj Dubai, but as Dubai was unable to make their payments, they were forced to go to their Gulf neighbor, head towel in hand, to get a loan. So now it’s called Burj Khalifa, after Abu Dhabi’s ruler, who coughed up $10 billion...So its back to your desert tents soon boys....

You need to cite your sources on this website - Not doing so is a violation of forum rules. That is a direct quote from Vanity Fair.
Your behaviour is now bordering on troll like posting....
Why do you care so much about Dubai anyway? You obviously don't like it... Jealously, perhaps? Not to worry, I'm sure the fiscal squeeze, looming austerity measures and crippling UK taxes will soon start to distract you

For your information Dubai is beyond Singapore's level, its DUBAI cities compare themselves to Dubai not the opposite.
FYI, it wasn't their "gulf neighbor" it was their neighboring emirate all part of one nation called THE UNITED ARAB EMIRATES, and the ruler of the country IS KHALIFA BIN ZAYED, their is nothing wrong in doing that it just shows how united the entire country is.
By the time the oil and gas runs out we (the gulf) will be done building all mega projects and full scale cities with alternative energy sources available not to mention the amount of wealth we will gain from the "vanity fairs"
The western world HOWEVER will be screwed.
So go weep in a corner you prick.
