Asiatown IT Park here in Cebu reminds me of Fort Bonifacio when it comes to the sidewalks and roads... I think it's a little version of Fort Boni.

It's actually far more better than Cebu Business Park nearby. Hehehe.

One of the most functional and well conceptualized IT parks for me is Northgate Cyberzone at Filinvest Alabang . There are even plans to expand its 18.7 hectares to a bigger land area because of its success . This is the best in Metro Manila , imho.

On the overall categories such as infrastructure, amenities, companies, schools, and the most important thing which is a pool of well-educated and talented yuppies, it’s got to be the EASTWOOD CYBERCITY. Of course, the Diliman-Katipunan IT zone is going to catch-up in a few years.
Quezon City is really is the IT-cyber capital of the Philippines.

Thanks...Once Dumaguete's economic boom is full blown, Cebu and Dumaguete area would be one of the most prosperous areas in the Philippines, in addition to Bacolod. It would create a prosperous triangle in Central Philippines. As of this time, there are talks that Starbucks would also open in the nearby Robinsons mall, which would also be huge.

FYI: Rustans is the sole franchisee of Starbucks in the Phillippines and they own all the SB stores in the country.... with the rate Dumaguete is going nowadays, it's not a long shot if SB plans to put up a store there.... but for now, only Cebu has SB stores outside Luzon which they have now 2 stores opened and another 2 stores under construction to open before yearend....

Should the Starbucks enter Dumaguete, one of the main targets would be the BPO workers plus the expats living in this city...I don't know, though if their number at this time is enough for a Starbucks branch to open here...Well, Robinsons Lipa, I think, has Starbucks.

Sykes expands in Cebu

ONE of the country’s major contact centers vowed to “further expand” its operations in Cebu and in the Philippines, as the company inaugurated its own building along F. Cabahug St., Cebu City.

“We will continue to look for ways to grow in Cebu and in the Philippines …and create more jobs,” said Jim Hobby, Sykes Enterprises Inc. global operations senior vice president during the inauguration of the company’s own building yesterday.

President Arroyo came as guest of honor. Mayor Tomas Osmeña and Vice Mayor Michael Rama of Cebu City also came as well as Cebu Gov. Gwendolyn Garcia.

Sykes Asia and Pacific Rim vice president and managing director Mike Hen-derson said the company’s growth in Cebu and in other areas in country has been made possible with the support of the National Government and local government officials concerned.

Henderson said the company’s operations in Cebu “is growing fast” and Sykes “looks forward to expanding the business more.”

“Sykes Cebu will have an identity of its own….The support of the government makes a very big difference,” he said in a short speech during the inauguration.

He recalled that Sykes Cebu began operations with 15 people in 2003 and now has 1,700 seats that help the company provide out-sourced customer contact management solutions and services to clients.

Pioneer

Sykes also has offices in Makati, Pasig and Quezon City. It has over 8,000 contact center seats nationwide.

According to a statement from Sykes, the company was named pioneer call center locator in Cebu in June 2006 by the Cebu Chamber of Commerce and Industry.

The new Sykes building, which is called Synergis IT (information technology) Center, houses the company’s data, telephony and security technology facilities.

Also present during the inauguration were Trade and Industry Secretary Peter Favila, Tourism Secretary Joseph “Ace” Durano, Presidential Management Staff Chief Cerge Remonde, and Reps. Raul del Mar (Cebu City, north), Antonio Cuenco (Cebu City, south), Nerissa Soon-Ruiz (Cebu, 6th district), Ramon Durano VI (Cebu, 5th), Eduardo Gullas (Cebu, 1st). (LAP)

Eastwood cyberpark firms earn $188M in '06

Export earnings of companies based at the Eastwood City Cyberpark in Quezon City jumped 60 percent to $188.575 million in 2006, developer Megaworld Corp. said Wednesday.

Eastwood City-based firms earned $117.6 million in 2005.

Eastwood City has 62 locators accredited by the Philippine Economic Zone Authority (Peza), most of which are call centers and back-office operations such as human resources management. There are also a number of firms involved in semiconductors, software design and animation.

Megaworld Corp. said in a statement that the company hopes the contribution to the economy of Eastwood City will be replicated by its new project, the 50-hectare McKinley Hill in Fort Bonifacio, Taguig.

Megaworld vice president Jericho Go said the P33-billion project will have as its main offerings the One World Square and the Two World Square buildings aimed at business process outsourcing (BPO) firms.

"Our first BPO building there, One World Square, is now being finished and will be operational in May. And we just broke ground on the next tower, Two World Square. This is in response to the tremendous demand for office space in an excellent location such as McKinley Hill," Go said.

He noted that the buildings will feature large floor plates, on-demand air conditioning systems, and multiple access points via elevators and wide stairwells, making it ideal for the constantly improving needs of BPO firms.

The McKinley Hilll project, which is expected to be completed in five to seven years, will also have residential spaces, commercial areas for malls, retail shops and a hotel.

Go said that like Eastwood City, the BPO buildings at McKinley Hill are key components to the project’s “live-work-play-learn" concept. -GMANews.TV (http://www.gmanews.tv/story/34281/Eastwood-cyberpark-firms-earn-188M-in-06)

Private realty firm Century Properties Inc., on Wednesday said it will start developing Makati City's first ever information technology park on the former site of the International School of Manila.

Developments are set to start by the second quarter of the year.

In a statement sent to the media, Century Properties said that aside from the IT park, the project will also include residential and commercial developments, as well as a high-end motel.

Century Properties, which won the bidding for the property in June 2006, said it will build a minimum of 160,000 square meters of Grade A office space on the land.

"There's always a premium for Makati locations. This is the largest available property for development of contiguous land, and it's very rare that you can find a space that opens up like that, that you can essentially plan from scratch," Century Properties managing director Marco Antonio said.

The IT park will cater to the business process outsourcing sector, particularly the high-end BPOs, “who are willing to pay premium rates for a good location and something of this caliber," he added.

“We are currently applying for Philippine Economic Zone Authority (PEZA) accreditation and will most likely exceed the minimum requirement of one hectare for the IT park. We feel that we are poised to deliver products by 2008 or early 2009 for the first batch of office buildings," he said.

The firm said it also plans to set up an IT school in the area.-GMANews.TV (http://www.gmanews.tv/story/34268/Property-developer-to-build-IT-park-on-old-IS-site)

QUEZON CITY will soon be a host to multiple hi-tech business park. The soon to rise Diliman North Science and Technology Park will complement the Eastwood Cyber City zone. The QC memorial circle and NA Park's and Wildlife will become a central park upon the development of the SSS Corporate City.

Hotel to be built in UP’s North Science and Technology Park
http://www.bworldonline.com/BW031507/content.php?id=101

Property developer Ayala Land, Inc. will tie up with the Asian Institute of Tourism for the hotel component of the P6-billion University of the Philippines (UP) North Science and Technology (S&T) Park, senior vice-president Marivic E. Añonuevo said.

On the sidelines of the groundbreaking ceremonies last Thursday, she said the hotel will cater to visiting executives and businessmen from locators and serve as a venue for conferences and seminars for both the university and locators. The new hotel will be a low-rise development.

"A lot of expats, foreigners, visitors and clients will be coming here. We will build the hotel once there is a critical mass already. We are concentrating on the office buildings first," she told reporters.

The UP Asian Institute of Tourism is the first school in Southeast Asia to offer a four-year degree program leading to a Bachelor of Science in Tourism.

Last October, UP and Ayala Land agreed to jointly develop the state university’s 38-hectare property along Commonwealth Ave. in Quezon City into a science park.

Ayala Land will develop the property into a fully integrated Information Technology (IT) and IT-enabled services community, with low-rise office buildings to be complemented by retail, residential, and hotel developments.

Ayala Corp. Senior Managing Director Merceddita S. Nolledo said the UP Science & Technology Park will pioneer IT campus developments in the country.

The office development will be set in an environment with lots of greens and open spaces to complement the UP campus scene.

"We are bringing all of our company’s business lines to bear on this project. We are extremely excited that the UP North S&T Park that will be built on this 38-hectare site will feature the full lineup of Ayala Land’s products and services," she said.

A retail strip consisting of dining places, bookstore, and other service establishments will be developed to support the S&T Park. Also being conceptualized are multi-dwelling buildings four to six storeys high.

UP President Emerlinda R. Roman said the IT park could help reverse the brain drain being experienced by the university.

"Despite constant reminders that as mga iskolar ng bayan (scholars of the country), they are expected to give something back in return for the first-class education they have received by staying to serve the country in their respective professions, our own graduates have become part of that exodus. We believe that if comparable job opportunities are available right in their own backyard, our students will opt to stay and honor the commitment they made when they entered the university," she said.

Ms. Roman said the ground-breaking of the science park is an "act of faith and hope, faith in the future of the University, and hope for the future of the country."

"We envision the S&T Park which will rise here as the most prestigious and dynamic example of industry-academe collaboration, collaboration which will contribute to the growth of the country, at the same time that it reinforces the University’s status as the country’s premier educational institution, and strengthens its image both locally and globally," she said.

"We envision it as not only providing a venue for the transformation of innovative ideas into cutting-edge commercial products, and giving faculty and students access to world-class learning laboratories, but also as offering competitive employment opportunities."

Ms. Nolledo said the science park will support UP’s commitment to education, training and research by creating an environment where high-technology enterprises can interact with the academe in research-and-development and other technology-related, collaborative projects.

"I think it is important to stress here that the firms that will locate in the UP S&T Park will be those in high value-adding industries such as software development, engineering design, medical and legal transcription, and accounting and financial services. These will be world-class, globally competitive firms, many of whom will be exporting knowledge-based services overseas. UP will benefit from the synergies that will be created between these high value-adding, IT-enabled, knowledge-based industries and the universities’ various colleges."

Incubator

Ms. Nolledo said the UP science park will also be a vehicle for transforming innovative ideas into commercial products and start-up companies, along the lines of the Stanford-based Silicon Valley corridor in California.

"For all of us at Ayala Land, this is not just one of many projects — it is one of our most important developments, as it underscores our commitment to national development and to the progress of our country," she said.

"This project falls at the crossroads of two of Ayala Land’s thrusts in recent years: On the one hand, we have made a concerted effort to become a prime mover in the national development of our country through creating compelling products for the burgeoning IT, IT-enabled services, and BPO industries."

She also said, "we expect this market to continue to grow at a remarkably fast pace in the coming years and, more importantly, to be a key driver of our economy in the 21st century. On the other hand, this project signals our intent to become a partner of larger scale in the development of Quezon City."

Quezon City Mayor Sonny Belmonte said the development is expected to strengthen Quezon City’s claim of being the ICT capital of the Philippines.

"This event cements several partnerships which we hope will be strengthened and expand through the years with increased cooperation and objectives in Quezon City and residents. The development reflects the inflow of technology, innovation, new models of urban planning that we are pushing to implement massively and at a fast pace in many areas of our city," he said.

"It reflects the perspective that our city government has adopted to encourage mixed-use developments to spread the growth of more communities with complete amenities. It reflects our determined ascent to prime Quezon City to ride the wave of the new economy."

^^ Yes, it's ePLDT Ventus, the first call center in the city. It's been there since 2003 or 2005. That building is the newer part, the bottom has a cafe and some offices and part of the grocery. The older side has restos, arcades, some offices and shops and the other side of the grocery. Here's the website.

Next Wave Cities’ host new call centers

Twenty five members of the Contact Center Association of the Philippines (CCAP) have already set foot in 16 so-called "Next Wave Cities" in the country, topped by Convergys and TeleTech with its seven sites outside the primary hubs of the Makati and Ortigas central business districts.

CCAP tallied the locations of all its member companies, showing the evident shift away from Metro Manila to outlying cities and provinces. Out of the 96 locations, 43 or around 45 percent are located outside Makati, Pasig, and Mandaluyong.

Among these emerging cities, the top three cities with the most number of CCAP call center locators are Quezon City, with 14 sites; Cebu City, with eight sites; and Bacolod City, with three sites. Those with two CCAP member locators are Muntinlupa, Manila, Baguio, Laguna, and Batangas. Taguig, Pasay, Parañaque, Marikina, Rizal, Cavite, Angeles, and Dumaguete have one each.

Among its 37 members, TeleTech has the most presence with all of its eight sites located outside the Makati and Ortigas CBDs. It is followed by eTelecare with four and Convergys with three.

"This only shows the unrelenting growth of the call center industry. We are proud of the fact that the phenomenon is not isolated in Metro Manila. More and more Filipinos are benefiting from the investment and employment opportunities provided by outsource and in-house contact centers nationwide," says Jojo Uligan, executive director of CCAP

(LAP)

OMG! ang ganda naman ng facility ng Sykes sa Cebu, compared our building here in Quezon avenue, napaka-ordinary. :(

i'm also surprised kasi ngayon ko lang 'to nakita. and the inauguration already took place last year pa! oh well..

RLC builds 7 BPO sites in provinces

By JAMES A. LOYOLA

Robinsons Land Corporation (RLC), the country’s largest office landlord, is developing seven BPO and call center sites this year to expand its office space inventory and give its clients a stronger presence in the provinces.

RLC president Frederick Go said in an interview that while many of these projects are relatively small compared to their projects in Metro Manila, these provincial office spaces give BPOs a chance to relocate to the region of their choice.

He added that these BPO spaces will be built together with new malls and will have about 5,000 square meters of leasable space costing "just a few hundred million pesos."

RLC disclosed earlier that it is allotting R13.9 billin for capital expenditures for 2008 and 2009 of which 40 percent will be used to build new malls while the rest will be for office and residential developments.

To be developed by RLC’s Office Buildings Division in tandem with its Commercial Centers Division, the seven new projects are adapting the mixed use format, a strategy RLC pioneered when it built the Robinsons Galleria Center.

"We are currently incorporating office spaces intended for BPOs and call center operators in our shopping mall developments, specifically Robinsons Luisita in Tarlac City, Robinsons Cybergate Cebu between Cebu’s Chong Hua Hospital and Fuente Osmena," said Henry Yap, Business Unit General Manager for RLC’s Office Buildings Division.

He added that "Robinsons Cybergate Davao, along J. P. Laurel in the Bajada District, and Robinsons Cybergate Plaza in Mandaluyong City are also under construction and will be ready for occupancy by next year. We are currently accepting lease inquiries for all these properties."

These projects are in addition to two recently completed projects in Robinsons Otis, in Manila and Cybergate Tower 3 in Mandaluyong City – both of which are now ready for occupancy.

BPO and call center firms are rapidly expanding into the provinces due to lower costs of operations, larger manpower pool and lower rate of employee turnover.

In addition, the relatively lower cost of operations in the Philippines have encouraged many firms in the United States and Western Europe to outsource their operations to the Philippines, thereby making these sites even more desirable and lucrative.

"We are also giving these BPOs an opportunity to undertake pioneering efforts in our sites, a move that is very much encouraged and supported by the local government units that hosts our malls and offices buildings," said Yap.

RLC, a leading property developer and landlord of choice, foresees that locators for business process outsourcing and the call center industry in general, are gearing their expansion plans toward key regional urban centers.

"These areas—-Cebu, Davao, Northern Luzon and the Calabarzon areas offer talented and highly skilled human resources sourced from prestigious educational institutions that are highly proficient in English," added Yap.

RLC has built BPOs and call centers in Bacolod, Lipa (Batangas) and Sta. Rosa (Laguna) and Cainta (Rizal). In Metro Manila, in addition to Robinsons Novaliches and two Cybergate Towers within the Forum Robinsons Complex in Mandaluyong City.

RLC is now planning more buildings in the Old Medical City site in Mandaluyong, along Ayala Avenue where a recent joint venture deal was entered into by RLC, Security Land and Taganito Mining Corporation, and in Tacloban where a mall is now under construction.

I don't know because when I went to the Main office of Teletech near the Mall of Asia (2 years ago) they don't have revolving doors (yet?). All I noticed there was keyless entry (using cards). I noticed the revolving door of Teletech Dumaguete (much like the ones you see in big buildings in the US and western countries) when I visited the site recently. And I didn't notice any automated urinals there (I didn't go to their CR anyway). Teletech Dumaguete is complete with game and sleeping rooms and other facilities.

Albay ICT group moves to attract BPO firms to Legazpi (http://newsinfo.inquirer.net/breakingnews/infotech/view/20080710-147541/Albay-ICT-group-moves-to-attract-BPO-firms-to-Legazpi)
By Erwin Oliva

MANILA, Philippines -- A group representing stakeholders in the information and communications technology (ICT) industry in Albay is moving quickly to attract business process outsourcing (BPO) firms to the province, its president told INQUIRER.net. Rosemarie Rey, president of the Albay ICT Association (AICTA), said the group is aiming to grow its membership this year, as they anticipate the influx of investments from the BPO industry to Legazpi City.

Rey who represented the AICTA, witnessed the signing of a deal between Embarcadero Land Ventures Inc. and five telecommunications companies as part of a plan to create an IT park in the city. Among the telecommunications companies that have agreed to provide services to the IT park are the Philippine Long Distance Telephone Company, Bayantel, Digitel, Globe and PT&T, the group said in a statement.

"We helped in the realization of this project because this will lead to more jobs," said Rey who is also president and CEO of Southern Luzon Technological College Foundation, an IT school located in Legaspi City. Legazpi City is the educational center for the Bicol region, she said.

While the IT park is mainly a private venture, Rey said the group is supporting this project because of BPO opportunities. Her school has been doing outsourcing services for some United States-based companies. The school has served as an "incubation" center for a supply of trained agents for a small operation of more than 20 seats.

IT schools like Southern Luzon Technological College Foundation have been operating facilities for outsourced services, she added. Legazpi City Mayor Noel E. Rosal said in a statement that the city is ready to provide manpower for the planned IT park.

Zaldy Co, president and CEO of Embarcadero de Legazpi, for his part, added in a statement that the IT park intends to attract talents and skills from the Bicol Region. The planned IT park is a 15,477 square-meter area located in Legazpi City. It can house about 8,000 seats in three buildings, she said.

A hotel here in Dumaguete was using that kind of door before (which you can see in Ayala Malls, the one that opens when it senses you are approaching) but I don't know what happened, they replaced it with the security guards. Anyway, I am happy that these callcenters are bringing a whole bunch of new technologies previously not available in some localities.

Aint this common to other IT facilities in the country? Correct me if im wrong but revolving doors cant be considered that hightech (if ur referring to that revolving door like the ones in Shangrila Mall), but who knows, maybe ur referring to a newer and more high tech version :D yung tipong pagdumaan ka, ur molecules will disintegrate and you'll be transported to the different area of the facility..eheheheheh :jk:

The game and sleeping rooms can be found elsewhere naman diba? In fact, it's a norm na for a call center to have sleeping rooms and game rooms in their sites. But maybe nga mas hightech ang game room jan - who knows baka TimeZone mismo ang sponsor with matching Virtual Capsules and ang sleeprooms, mag levitate ang mga people pag natutulog...wakokokokokokoko...

TTata Consultancy Services (TCS), the IT services, business solutions and outsourcing arm of India’s largest industrial conglomerate Tata Group, is establishing a software development operation in the country for its customers worldwide. Other Indian firms have also expressed interest in the country’s mining sector.

Indian Ambassador to the Philippines Rajeet Mitter told reporters that TCS will establish office in Cebu before end of the year.

Mitter noted the strong inflow Indian business process outsourcing firms into the country as wholly-owned enterprises or in joint venture with local enterprises.

"Tata’s software development unit to be established here is going to service its customers all over the world," Mitter said.

So far, Tata’s exposure in the country is through the Steel Asia Philippines for the rehabilitation of Bacnotan Steel in Batangas. Tata’s entry into Steel Asia came after it bought out National Steel of Singapore, an investor in Steel Asia.

A A part of the Tata Group, India’s largest industrial conglomerate, TCS has over 94,000 of the world’s best trained IT consultants in 47 countries. The Company generated consolidated revenues of $ 4.3 billion for fiscal year ended 31 March, 2007 and is listed on the National Stock Exchange and Bombay Stock Exchange in India.

As a group, Tata is a rapidly growing business group based in India with significant international operations.Revenues in 2007-08 are estimated in excess of $ 55 billion, of which 65 per cent was from business outside India.

The Group employs around 350,000 people worldwide.

The business operations of the Tata Group currently encompass seven business sectors: communications and information

How many seats does Accenture Cebu have and what are its main line of business in Cebu (Accenture has several outsourcing fields such as accounting, software, and I read recently that it is venturing into callcenter).

i think that accenture cebu (the one is cbp) is for its software business. i know in teletech cebu they have this accenture account for tech support and i think in sykes cebu they also have this accenture account for sales.. :)

this is from accenture cebu website

The Accenture Delivery Center in Cebu began its operations in August 2007 and initially focused on IT outsourcing. Today, just eight months after its inauguration, the success of the Cebu office is evident. As part of the global delivery center network, our IT professionals provide “high-value” information technology outsourcing services like application management service, systems development and other related services to global clients.

This year, Accenture will continue to grow its Cebu operations as it expands its service offerings to include business process outsourcing including customer contact services. This growth reflects our commitment to grow our business in the Philippines and to maintain the country’s position as a preferred destination for outsourced services.

About Accenture

Accenture is a global management consulting, technology services and outsourcing company committed to help clients become high-performance businesses and governments. We have more than 180,000 people in 49 countries and work with some of the top companies around the globe, including 91 of the Fortune Global 100 companies and over 2/3 of the Fortune Global 500 companies. In the Philippines, Accenture operates primarily as a delivery center – the first among Accenture’s Global Delivery Network today of more than 40 delivery centers around the world. We have over 15,000 employees in Manila and Cebu and provide a full range of technology and outsourcing services to clients spread across North America, Europe and Asia Pacific.

anyway, according to spi website, cebu spi is home for its healthcare delivery and legal delivery center while the one in dumaguete is only for its publishing delivery center.. here (http://www.spi-bpo.com/web/spi/text_page.jsp?fldr_id=195&service=_Show_All) :)

I just learned today that the SPi Leadership is planning to transfer the SPi Philippine headquarters to Dumaguete with the transfer of the SPi Learning Academy here. SPi Executives will be in Dumaguete tomorrow to assess the site for transfer of some of their Manila and Vietnam operations here. They will soon be constructing another huge building at the SPi Technology Park 7 kms from downtown Dumaguete.

Some of the reasons cited why the SPi leadership is planning to transfer its Philippine HQ in Dumaguete are the absence of typhoon (thus less disruption in production), central location, low operating cost, better environment (than Manila), and the presence of high quality educational institutions

ayos to ah! basic pay lang ba to or yung total compensation package na? malaki na rin. Lam mo, sobrang lucky ng mga callcenter agents outside of Metro Manila because mababa ang cost of living yet competitive ang basic pay.

Here in MM, an entry level position (w/ Etel, PS, IBM, Sitel, and other big companies) would have a basic pay from 12,500 to 14K only excluding the allowances.

Anyway, i came from a travel account. Maganda ang travel account pero make sure that u can embrace stress gracefully. eheheheh its a dynamic account kc. The queue of ur calls is dependent on the weather sa US, political happenings abroad, terrorism or threats, etc. grabbbbeeeh! :D Pero fun din kc u get to learn about alot of cities even if u havent been there. :D

It's not actually 14K, but 15K starting salary. My apologies to StudentUniverse. But getting in is tough. You have to pass speed tests and a tough grammar test. But when you get in the environment is wonderful, just wonderful. StudentUniverse just have one of the best working conditions among BPO companies in Dumaguete. I do hope to post pictures of its facilities if it could be possible. They have nice interiors of their site comparable to other top BPO sites in the country.

Call center training firm expands in Bacolod

By Lawrence Casiraya

MANILA, Philippines – Call center training firm ExcelAsia is looking at training around 300 "near-hires" a month in Bacolod City.

ExcelAsia recently opened an office in Bacolod City, its first expansion after setting up in Cebu and then Metro Manila.

The company provides free training for "near-hires" or applicants who did not pass initially but require remedial training to qualify for employment.

Rita Trillo-Ugarte, ExcelAsia founder and president, said the company's Bacolod site should be able to accommodate applicants in other cities in the South and outside of Cebu.

She is optimistic about getting trainees in Bacolod alone. TeleTech and Convergys -- among the largest call center operators in the country -- have recently expanded into Bacolod and both have hired agents trained by ExcelAsia.

Bacolod was identified by the Commission of Information and Communications (CICT) as one of the 20 "next-wave" cities ready to accommodate investments in the business process outsourcing sector.

According to Bacolod's local government, there are at least five operators located in the city. Aside from Teletech and Convergys, smaller operators Teleperformance, Intervoice and Focus Pacific Communications have also set up facilities in the city.

Trillo-Ugarte added ExcelAsia has plans of opening a training facility in Baguio City, which is north of Metro Manila, later this year.

ExcelAsia said it has trained and deployed more than 16,000 call center trainees since it began in 2005.

Arroyo to inaugurate
Convergys in Bacolod
BY CHRYSEE SAMILLANO

Bacolod Mayor Evelio Leonardia yesterday said President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo will formally inaugurate Convergys in Bacolod City on October 1.

He said he and the rest of the city officials are also very elated that the president has accepted their invitation to declare the 29th MassKara Festival open on the same day.

“We feel this is a validation of our belief that the MassKara Festival is recognized by the President because it has become an identity for Bacolod and is one of the major tourism attractions of the Philippines today,” he said.

This development will give MassKara a wide coverage in terms of media exposure, he said, adding that the presence of the President itself is already a media event.

Leonardia said the President has placed Information Technology among her priorities.

On the part of Bacolod it is very gratifying since Convergys, which is one of the biggest, if not the biggest companies in the Philippines today, has opened in Bacolod inspite of the presence of other giants like Teleperformance and TeleTech, he said.

Leonardia said that during the tour of the Mayors’ League, Convergys country manager Ma. Fe Zamora told them that there are still good call center materials in Bacolod who are presently being accommodated by their company.

From 700 to 1,000 employees, they intend to expand from 1,800 to 2,000 in the coming months, she said.

Zamora said that from all over the Philippines, it is in Bacolod where they have the highest rate of passing, compared to other cities, Leonardia added. “I think that speaks well of our people and that should encourage us to further develop our potentials here,” he said.

The Bacolod Sangguniang Panlungsod recently passed Resolution 698 requesting Arroyo to issue a presidential proclamation declaring Oct. 20 as a non-working holiday in Bacolod City.

This was based on the mayor’s request considering that the 70th Charter Anniversary of Bacolod, falls on a Sunday.

The 2008 MassKara Festival will revolve around the theme, “Bacolod, City of the World.”

Councilor Homer Bais, chairman of the Committee on Tourism, said 22 barangays and 10 schools are participating in the MassKara Streedance competition on October 16, 17 and 18.

He said each barangay will receive a budget of P100,000 from the city government and each school will receive P60,000.

Bais said 10 barangays will join the Electric MassKara on October 17-19 while the countdown to the Charter Day on October 18 will be simultaneously held at Araneta and Lacson streets.

Leonardia said that, because of the success of the first staging of the Electric MassKara last year, they will hold another this year.

Bais said that about 80 percent of the establishments along Lacson Street support the Electric MassKara event. He said added attractions include private vehicles staging a “sound off” along Lacson Street.

Leonardia said “Considering the success of the activity at Lacson Street, which we may now call the Tourism Strip of Bacolod, I am sure we will do better this year.”*CGS

Japanese investors eye call center in Silay City
By Lawrence Casiraya
INQUIRER.net
First Posted 10:53am (Mla time) 09/23/2008

MANILA, Philippines -- A group of Japanese investors are looking at setting up call centers in Silay City in Negros Occidental province, a local official told INQUIRER.net.

A report from outsourcing research firm Callcentres.net said a group of Japanese investors from partner firms Masterpiece Group and local partner Nomura Securities Philippines recently met with Mayor Jose Montelibano to discuss their intent to invest in Silay.

The proposed call centers would cater to Japanese, Chinese and English-speaking clients, the report said.

City councilor Mike Maravilla confirmed via telephone the meeting with Japanese investors, although he noted that plans are yet to be finalized.

Silay is categorized as a second-class city and is located north of the provincial capital of Bacolod. It is also the site of the new Bacolod-Silay International airport.

Maravilla said an area near the new airport is being developed as an investment site for IT-related industries and has a pending application with PEZA (Philippine Economic Zone Authority) to become an economic zone.

"Our thrust is to attract IT-related investments but we need to have adequate infrastructure first. Once approved, telcos have already committed to improve connectivity in Silay," Maravilla said.

A number of call center operators, including Convergys and Teletech, have already set up in Bacolod.

Bangalore, Chennai in top global outsourcing list
Monday, 06 October , 2008, 16:46
Last Updated: Monday, 06 October , 2008, 18:05

New Delhi: Six Indian cities are among the top eight outsourcing centres, according to the CyberMedia publications group.

A study by CyberMedia's Global Services, titled 'Top 8 Global Outsourcing Cities', said Bangalore, Chennai, Delhi and the national capital region (NCR), Hyderabad, Mumbai and Pune, besides Dublin in Ireland and Makati City in the Philippines form the top eight global outsourcing cities.

India's representation in the 'Top 50 Emerging Global Outsourcing cities' has grown to four, from last year's three, with the addition of Jaipur to the list at number 31, the report said.

The other three cities in the list include Kolkata at number 6, Chandigarh at number 12 and Coimbatore at number 17

Two Chinese cities - Shanghai and Beijing - lead the list of emerging global outsourcing cities, and are followed by Cebu City in the Philippines.

The 'Top 50 Emerging Global Outsourcing Cities' 2008 list has nine new entrants - Quezon City, Toronto, Rio de Janeiro, Mexico City, Jaipur, Singapore City, Chengdu, Guadalajara and Mandaluyong City.

Six Chinese cities - Shanghai, Beijing, Shenzhen, Dalian, Guangzhou and Chengdu - are part of the top 50 emerging cities for global outsourcing list, compared to India's four (Kolkata, Coimbatore, Jaipur and Chandigarh).

Of the top 50 cities, 19 are from Asia and 13 from Central and Eastern Europe. Besides tier-1 Asian cities, outsourcing centres are being set up in many tier-2 and tier-3 cities, the report noted

The study says the choice of the city has become more important than the choice of the country to set up an outsourcing centre, with factors such quality of workforce and infrastructure determining its attractiveness.

"The concept of an individual location being a 'one-stop-shop' has given way to 'smart, multi, selective sourcing' models, wherein selected processes are outsourced only to the most appropriate destination," Global Services editor Ed Nair said.

While Bangalore, Krakow, Makati City and Shanghai are established centres for finance and accounting, Cebu City, Colombo and Pune are the emerging centres of excellence in this area.

The study has also short listed tier-II cities around the world, which have the potential of moving into the top 50 list. These include Nizhniy Novgorod (Russia) Cork, (Ireland), Tianjin (China), Bacolod City (the Philippines) and Amman (Jordan).

One more outsourcing firm sets up shop in Bacolod City (http://www.gmanews.tv/story/111689/One-more-outsourcing-firm-sets-up-shop-in-Bacolod-City)

BACOLOD CITY, Philippines — A US-based company is set to open a small-scale call center here this year, joining three more outsourcing companies that have come here to take advantage of the city’s skilled work force.

Lone Star Global IT Solutions, owned by John Burdick of Houston, Texas, will provide outbound telemarketing services to clients in the United States, said Councilor Jocelle Batapa-Sigue, who heads the Bacolod Negros Federation for Information and Communications Technology, Inc.

The call center will be located at the East IT Center, an information technology economic zone accredited by the Philippine Economic Zone Authority.

Lone Star will also undertake data entry and encoding, design and implementation, and operation of office business process such as outsourced customer support services.

These include sales and marketing support, customer care, technical support, data management services and customer relations management.

Ms. Batapa-Sigue said the firm’s recruitment officer is looking for agents with at least six months of experience in the call center industry.

She said the business process outsourcing (BPO) industry in Bacolod continues to grow as Lone Star Global IT Solutions comes to the city along with other IT enterprises.

"As foreign players venture into Bacolod, local leaders should seriously undertake more human resource programs to sustain the gains of the IT and BPO industry," she said.

She noted that while Bacolod has promoted itself as one of the next wave of cities identified by the Business Process Association of the Philippines, the responsibility does not end there.

"The task becomes more difficult because we have to come up with more programs in response to industry demands, especially manpower," she pointed out.

At present, the city hosts three major call centers — Teleperformance, TeleTech and Convergys.

It has five special economic zones proclaimed as ICT parks and buildings, and these sites are now the workplaces of almost 4,000 employees.

These include Luxur Plaza IT Centre, the site of Teleperformance at the old Bacolod Convention Plaza Hotel; East Block IT Centre and Bacolod IT Park, both declared as IT parks.

The East Block is being occupied by First International Document Masters, Inc. and Intervoice Technologies, Inc., an insourcing company.

Others are the Robinsons Cybergate Center occupied by Teletech, and Monfort IT Centre occupied by Focus Pacific Communications.

Convergys is occupying One SanParq, the first and only built-to-suit Philippine Economic Zone Authority-registered information technology center in Western Visayas. — Nanette Guadalquiver, BusinessWorld

IN BACOLOD
TeleTech now employs 2,000

TeleTech, one of the major sponsors of the MassKara Festival, now employs 2,000 people in Bacolod City, a press release from the company said.

TeleTech senior vice president and general manager for Asia Maulik Parekh attributes the growth of TeleTech in Bacolod City to its hardworking and highly skilled workers.

The company is well on its way to achieving its next milestone in the Philippines – 25,000 employees by the end of 2009, he said, adding that he expects Bacolod to contribute significantly to that growth.

Parekh said “MassKara is a celebration of Bacolod’s people and we at TeleTech likewise consider it a celebration of our most important asset – our employees.”

Bacolod Mayor Evelio Leonardia lauded TeleTech for sponsoring the MassKara Festival for the second straight year. He said he is happy that TeleTech stayed after it opened in 2006 and has provided employment to 2,000 people.

Bacolod has the highest passing rate, as far as call center applicants is concerned, he added.

“I hope that next year TeleTech will again sponsor the MassKara Festival,” Leonardia said.

TeleTech in partnership with the Silver MassKara Festival Organization, is sponsoring the MassKara Village, a mask-making competition organized by ABS CBN-Bacolod and Robinson’s Place Bacolod, the release said. It also sponsored the streetdance competition Thursday participated in by 11 schools.

Adopting the theme “Bacolod, City of the World,” this year’s festival not only celebrates the city’s art and culture but more importantly its emergence as a world-class city that has been attracting foreign investors especially in the information and communications technology and business process outsourcing sectors, it said.

MassKara celebrates the warm and friendly spirit of the Negrenses, a trait which makes Bacolod an even more ideal and suitable location for call centers, the release added.*CGS

Cebu City leaps from no. 4 to no. 1
By Nancy R. Cudis
Sun.Star Staff Reporter

CEBU has climbed from fourth to first this year in the list of 50 emerging outsourcing destinations for global companies this year.

This was according to a research report released last week by industry publication Global Services and investment advisory firm Tholons.

Cebu ranked first after the top three cities in the list last year—Chennai, Hyderabad, and Pune (all in India)—-were elevated to the category of developed global outsourcing cities.

They are now part of the top eight in that category along with Bangalore, India; Delhi NCR, India; Dublin, Ireland; Makati City, Philippines; and Mumbai, India.

Global Services and Tholons highlight in their research the increasing importance of choosing the right city instead of the right country.

“It is rather the city that represents a more accurate package of attributes the service providers seek. Thus, Cebu City and Monterrey matter more than the Philippines and Mexico from a decision-making standpoint,” the study said.

The list is based on the criteria that include scale and quality of workforce, business catalyst, cost, infrastructure, risk profile, and quality of life.
But it does not include developed or established outsourcing locations.

Top cities

According to the list, the other hot cities for outsourcing are Shanghai, China at number two (eighth last year); Beijing, also in China at number three (10th last year); Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam at number four (sixth last year); and Krakow, Poland at number five (16th last year).

Rounding up the top 10 are Kolkata, India at number six (fifth last year); Cairo, Egypt at number seven (11th last year); Sao Paulo, Brazil at number eight (fifteenth last year); Buenos Aires, Argentina at number nine (14th last year); and Shenzhen at number 10 (13th last year).

Asian cities dominated the top cities list (38 percent).

Baguio City, which was number 36 last year, dropped out of the list while new entrants from the country entered the list, like Quezon City (number 21) and Mandaluyong City (number 45).

Pasig City was number 15.

Avinash Vashistha of Tholons and Imrana Khan of Global Services said local stakeholders need “to address infrastructure and ecosystem concerns in a timelier manner.”

“Many city mayors and local government units, for example, can provide city-specific tax incentives and telecom providers can deploy connectivity in a much more
targeted scale,” they said.

Service providers, they noted, look for resources to capture specific market segments.

They cited the cities in the Philippines as an example since they “continuously provide large English-proficient workforce that can cater to the US customer service market.”

Venue

In a press conference yesterday, Cebu Investment Promotions Center (CIPC) executive director Joel Mari Yu said that Cebu achieved this feat even when it only started moving into information technology (IT) and building contact centers around 2002 to 2003.

He said that Cebu provides a venue for global companies like those in the US to remain competitive and to save money.

Putting up a call center in Cebu with its cheap labor, for example, enables locators to reduce costs by as much as 90 percent compared with putting up one in the US.

With the continuous growth of call centers and non-voiced services, Yu added, the 23,000 local graduates every year have “very little choice” but to join IT and business process outsourcing (BPO)-related jobs.

CIPC records show that Cebu currently has 22 call centers with around 20,000 agents, as well as 36 foreign direct investments in IT or BPO.

Yu said that when Cebu was fourth last year, it helped them promote the city to global companies so that some firms are already planning to expand to Cebu.

He cited technology company Hewlett-Packard (HP); engineering, procurement, construction and maintenance services company Fluor Corp.; global IT firm HCL; and software giant Tata Consultancy Services.

RLC ushers in Cybergate for growing BPO market
The Freeman Online
Tuesday, November 4, 2008

Taking advantage of the rapidly expanding BPO and call center firms in the region, Robinsons Land Corporation (RLC), the real estate development arm of the Gokongwei Group is scheduled to deliver its Robinsons Cybergate here in Cebu on the third quarter of next year.

Due to lower operational costs, larger manpower pool and lower employee turnover rates, most firms and locators are encouraged to undertake pioneering efforts in the regions, which include Cebu.

And Robinsons Cybergate is one of the answers of RLC to this growing demand of office spaces and IT-related facilities here in the city.

Hermosilla Irizari, Group Property Manager for Cebu of the Robinsons Land Corp.’s Commercial Centers Division said that the concept of the Robinsons Cybergate is an IT building cum retail facility.

It will be a seven story modern building that will house IT-related office spaces and a commercial area that will offer a different concept of retail from the Robinsons Place Cebu nearby.

Irizari said that despite its proximity to the existing mall, the Robinsons Cybergate will not directly compete with their mall as it will offer a different concept as it will be another mixed-use BPO project inside a mall.

The first two levels of the building will offer an upscale retail experience with 2,000 square meters of leasable spaces eyed for a combination of both local and Manila-based tenants.

These tenants are also eyed to support the needs of BPO personnel working in the five floors of the building who will be working late at night or early in the morning.

“Robinsons Cybergate will definitely target a different market than our existing mall because it is intended for the higher end market segments,” she said.

Among commercial tenants that they are eyeing for Robinsons Cybergate include a coffee shop, convenient store, gadgets and cell phone peripheral outlet, fitness center, beauty saloon and spa, sports shops and hobby shops and a pharmacy.

Currently, RLC is receiving letter of intents for their available retail spaces but have not yet awarded to any tenant yet as they are still sorting these proposals out.

Irizari said that around January next year they will already award the spaces to its respective tenants both for their IT facility and commercial leasable spaces.

The construction of the project started April of this year and as of the moment construction is already around 40 percent.

The project is scheduled to be completed by August of next year and will be opened by November (2009).

Irizari said that in terms of potential, the Robinsons Cybergate has a lot to offer because the area is located nearby hospitals, banks, and other office spaces so there is a huge market.

“The Robinsons Cybergate will become a hub for business and lifestyle and since we are surrounded by hospitals we can easily attract doctors and other high income markets. There will be no duplication of tenants from the mall because it will have its own niche market,” she said.

The Robinsons Cybergate sits on a 4, 772 square meters of lot in front of Chong Hua Hospital near the Fuente Osmeña Rotunda and RLC has allocated around P536 million for this particular project.

“Our location is very good and it will surely draw people because it’s very accessible and nearby one of Cebu’s distinct landmarks,” she added further.— Rhia de Pablo

Bacolod one of top 10 RP outsourcing cities (http://www.visayandailystar.com/2008/November/07/topstory4.htm)

Bacolod City is in the league of the top 10 Business Process Outsourcing cities in the whole Philippines.

It topped in the criterion of business environment with a score of 96 percent among the “Ten Next New Wave Cities Scorecard Ranking” for outsourcing in the Philippines outside of Metro Manila and Cebu, Bacolod Councilor Jocelle Batapa-Sigue, chairperson of the Bacolod Negros Occidental Federation Information and Communications Inc., said.

Sigue said the Business Process Association of the Philippines, Commission on Information and Communication Technology, and the Department of Trade and Industry computed the scores using the following criteria: availability of talent - 50 percent, infrastructure – 30 percent, cost 5 percent and business environment – 15 percent.

Oscar Sanez, chief executive officer of BPAP said that Bacolod topped the business environment category because of the presence of sites accredited by the Philippine Economic Zone Authority and proclaimed by the Office of the President, and the existence of the Bacolod ICT Focus Team, which eventually led to the creation of BNEFIT.

He said the business environment criterion took into account incentives from the local government units, peace and order situation, vulnerability to natural disturbances, travel advisories and crime rates.

Iloilo ranked second in this criterion with a score of 92 percent. Over-all, Bacolod ranked fifth with 78 percent, while Iloilo ranked third with 80.9 percent, Sigue said.

Bacolod ranked second in terms of cost (80 percent), which includes median base pay, real estate rentals and power rates, Sigue said.

It ranked fifth (81.33 percent) in terms of infrastructure which considers airport standards, flight frequency and international flights, availability of real estate, hotel accommodations, road quality, telecommunications and power infrastructure, she said.

The Metro Laguna cluster composed of Santa Rosa City, Calamba City, Los Baños, Cabuyao and San Pablo City topped the over-all list in the Ten Next New Wave Cities scorecard ranking with 88.3 percent, while the Metro Cavite cluster composed of Dasmariñas, Bacoor, Imus and Cavite City placed second with 85.4 percent.

Davao ranked fourth with a score of 80 percent, Angeles-Clark-Mabalacat ranked sixth – 77 percent, Baliuag-Marilao-Meycauyan seventh – 74 percent, Cagayan de Oro eight – 73 percent, Malolos-Calumpit ninth – 73 percent and Lipa City tenth – 73 percent.*CGS

Obama not seen to hurt BPOs here (http://www.businessmirror.com.ph/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=1651:obama-not-seen-to-hurt-bpos-here&catid=23:topnews)

THE local outsourcing and offshoring sector is not panicking over the victory of Barack Obama as the 44th president of the United States, even though he declared to American voters he was going to make sure jobs remained at home, in reference to the offshore sourcing of many jobs that many believe kept many Americans jobless.

Dan Reyes, president of the Business Processing Association of the Philippines, said there is no reason to fear because the global financial tsunami has already made it a must for companies—American or otherwise, in the developed countries—to outsource jobs to locations like the Philippines, where they could get lower costs.

“I believe the BPOs [business-process outsourcing companies] will continue to thrive. In today’s global economy, companies’ interdependence on the global supply chain to produce economically viable products and services will continue. It’s the same with the BPOs,” said Reyes.

Jojo Uligan, executive director of the Contact Center Association of the Philippines, said although it is still too early to tell if Obama will really try to bring outsourced jobs back to America, he believes the Philippine outsourcing industry will not be affected because for one, “the jobs we are getting are the jobs that the Americans don’t want to do.”

The Philippine BPO firms are actually helping the American companies survive the current global financial crunch because of the savings in operational costs that they are getting for outsourcing some operations here, he added.

“We are giving them benefits with our high-quality service and the high customer satisfaction. I don’t think there will be an effect in our industry as long as we continue to deliver the best quality service and performance our clients require from us,” said Uligan.

But definitely, he said the country needs to prepare and watch out for every move that the new administration will make, either to be prepared if they are disadvantageous for us, or to be ready to take the opportunity for expanded economic advantage.

Sergio Ortiz-Luis, president of the Philippine Exporters Confederation, cited two main things the Philippines must watch out for under the Obama presidency: his actions that might penalize the US firms that are outsourcing abroad, and the new administration’s policy on the preferential access of some products being exported by developing countries under the US Generalized System of Preference (GSP).

“We are hoping that he will not go to that extent [penalize outsourcing US firms], because if he does, that will have a negative impact on us,” he said, adding that on the GSP, the Republicans have been consistent in renewing the duty-free privileges of some Philippine exports to the US every two years, but now it is uncertain if the Democrats will do the same.

“With the Republicans, we already know how they go. Now with the Democrats, we still have to wait and see,” he said.

Also, Ortiz-Luis said the country will have to wait for signals from the new US leadership on what would be the fate of the RP-US bilateral free-trade agreement that several Philippine sectors, especially the garments makers, have been advocating for a long time now.

Iloilo, Bacolod cities in the league of top BPO sites
By Serge C. Santillan

BACOLOD CITY – Iloilo and Bacolod cities were among the three cities in the Visayas excluding Cebu that are included in the list of "Top 10 Next Wave of Locations for Outsourcing in the Philippines."

The list was released by the Commission on Information and Communications Technology (CICT) under the Office of the President, Business Process Association of the Philippines (BPAP) and the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI).

Iloilo City ranked third with the score of 80.93% while Bacolod City ranked fifth with the score of 78%.

Councilor Jocelle Batapa-Sigue, chairperson of Sangguniang Panglungsod Committee on Communications and Technology and the prime mover of IT Industry in the city, welcomed the positive development. She said that in 2004, it was just a dream to be included in next wave cities for outsourcing in the country but now, records showed that the city shines in this field with the help of various sectors.

The CICT-BPAP-DTI scorecard computed the scores using the following criteria: Availability of Talent - 50%; Infrastructure – 30%; Business Environment – 15% and Cost – 5%.

Bacolod topped the business environment category with the score of 96% while Iloilo got the second place with 92% score. The category includes availability of PEZA accredited sites, peace and order, absence of travel advisory, crime rate, out from calamity area and presence of IT council/organization.

"Bacolod is very conducive to outsourcing with its very business-friendly environment," Sigue said.

Out of 11 PEZA accredited sites in the city, 7 has presidential proclamation while another one will enter Bacolod soon situated in 15-hectare property with a big mall.

"I thanked the real estate developer for converting their property into IT economic zones," Sigue added.

The Metro Laguna comprising the cities of Sta. Rosa City, Calamba, Los Baños and San Pablo City was cited as the best outsourcing location in the Philippines outside Metro Manila and Cebu with the score of 88.35% while Metro Cavite composed of Damariñas, Bacoor, Imus and Cavite City was ranked second with 85.47% score.

Ranked fourth is Davao with 80.40%, while cities of Angeles-Clark-Mabalacat – 77.10% ranked sixth followed by Baliuag-Marilao-Meycauayan – 73.53%; Cagayan de Oro – 73.13%; Malolos-Calumpit – 72.93% and Lipa – 72.53%.

Iloilo topped Bacolod in 'Availability of Talent' scoring 72% viz-a-viz Bacolod's 70.40%, because of the number of schools generating graduates for human resource in the area.

'Infrastructure' on the hand includes hotels, domestic/international flights, availability of real estates, power infra, telecommunications and availability of internet connections and fiber optics. 'Cost' composed of labor – the minimum wage, power rate and real estate rate.

"With facts presented, we can say that Bacolod City is now in the league of top BPOs in the Philippines and better if we will not only venture in call centers but others in the IT industry like animation, medical transcription, non-voice and back-office outsourcing for accountants, etc.," Sigue stressed.

^^^^^^another one for BACOLOD!!! the said project is yet to be revealed:banana::banana::banana:

TeleTech cites Iloilo

By Lydia C. Pendon

THIS southern city bested other cities in the country in the TeleTech best sites search. Signifying its fast growing call center service here, TeleTech gave the city an award December 3 in Metro Manila.

City Mayor Jerry P. Treñas said the city is being recognized as the second most important site among 6 TeleTech sites throughout the world. This will significantly amplify the city’s bid as the next important business hub and business process outsourcing (BPO) site, Treñas said.

Similarly, the city is also ranked third in the list of call center sites in the country selected by the Association of BPOs of the Philippines.

Of the 36 other call centers operating in the country, the Iloilo site is ranked 13th but number 2 globally. TeleTech has sites in the United States, Canada, South Africa, and Argentina.

Treñas said that TeleTech, with offices at the SM City here, is happy with the quality of students Iloilo produce annually, many of them join a pool of prospective quality call center agents.

TeleTech, currently considered as the fastest growing BPO, is set to promote more than 60 of its Filipino personnel to managerial level to be posted in different countries. The company is also recruiting call center agents from the ranks of local students and professionals to fill in the posts of promoted personnel.

Hit Rate Solutions Opens BPO Call Center in Bacolod City (http://www.prweb.com/releases/outsourcing/telemarketing/prweb1824834.htm)

Bacolod City, Philippines (PRWEB) January 7, 2009 -- Hit Rate Solutions, a US based Business Process Outsourcing company, officially opened a 160 seat call center in Bacolod City, Philippines. The center will house the company's core telemarketing, customer service, and data entry outsourcing functions.

"We are pleased to open a call center in a high growth region such as Bacolod," said Operations Manager Dustin Cruzen. "Bacolod's excellent education system, combined with a strong presence of competing call centers, gives us access to some of the top talent in the Philippines." Cruzen joined the outsourcing company last year to help train and manage employees with U.S grown methods, and has overseen triple digit growth since his arrival. "Our clients really appreciate the ability to work with hometown management", Cruzen added.

Hit Rate Solutions expects its rapid growth to continue despite the sluggish economy in the U.S and Great Britain. "Many companies are looking for creative, new ways to cut costs and increase revenue", said John Tompkins, Co-Founder. "The challenging economy is leading many businesses discover the benefits of outsourcing", continued Tompkins. Tompkins expects the call center to reach capacity sometime in the third quarter.

Convergys to open four more centers (http://www.businessmirror.com.ph/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=5160:convergys-to-open-four-more-centers&catid=52:technology)
Business Mirror Online / Technology
Monday, 26 January 2009 23:27

DESPITE the ongoing financial crisis that is seen to affect the country’s business process outsourcing industry, Convergys Corp. still plans to open four additional contact centers.

Marife Zamora, Convergys vice president and country manager, said the company will open four more centers in the coming months to support demand.

The company recently opened its newest integrated contact center and unique recruitment facility located in Cebu. The new state-of-the-art contact center—encompassing over 50,000 square feet—has the ability to hold approximately 1,000 employees and features a new, built-in recruitment center.

The positioning of a recruitment center as an integral part of the contact center building is a unique idea that ensures that Convergys is accessible and convenient for interested applicants since it is located close to the Cebu Business Park and local colleges and universities in Metro Cebu.

Now that the facility is fully operational, the Philippines is home to 10 Convergys integrated contact centers employing over 15,000 people.

“Convergys’s new Cebu Asiatown i3 facility is a wonderful addition to our physical plant as it will allow us to continue to tap into the large talent pool here in the Philippines,” said Zamora.

“Our US clients continue to request the Philippines to support their business needs, and the opening of this new contact center is a testament to the hard work and dedication of our employees. I look forward to the opening of Convergys’s four additional contact centers in the coming months to support that demand.”

Within five years, Convergys has established 10 contact centers in the Philippines—six located in Metro Manila, three in Cebu City and one in Bacolod City. These facilities include the new sites Convergys announced in May of 2008 to be added throughout the country. The new sites announced included Cebu Asiatown i3, University of the Philippines’ Science Park , Nuvali, San Lazaro and Glorietta.

Convergys’s contact centers in the Philippines provide both relationship management and advanced technical help desk services to a variety of clients via traditional voice calling, e-mail and Web chat, as well as “back office” application and document processing. All Convergys facilities are closely integrated into a “global assurance network.” This gives Convergys control of its end-to-end operations and processes and assures high redundancy and flexibility for clients.

Qimonda rides BPO boom; harnesses decades-old property
GMA NEWS
10/28/2008 | 03:02 AM

Qimonda Holdings, Inc., a new company owned by a Cebu-based Filipino-Chinese family, is constructing a P500-million information technology (IT) building to meet the growing office space requirements of business process outsourcing (BPO) companies here.

If the take-up rate for the building’s total leasable space of 22,450 square meters is high, Qimonda will further develop its five-hectare property at the Cebu North Reclamation Area into an IT park.

Jonas L. Go of Qimonda Holdings said his family plans to put up more IT buildings as well as condominiums and a mixed-use facility that will lease out space to businesses that complement BPO operations.

The six-storey building that is being constructed so far occupies only half a hectare, he added.

The property, which is located in the Cebu port area, adjuncts to those that are being used as container van yards or shipping facilities. It is also near the city’s upscale area that sits the SM City Cebu mall and the Radisson Hotel as well as the planned Robinson’s mall.

"We want to change the people’s perception of that area. Right now, you see container yards there and port facilities. But SM is there and Robinson’s will soon build a mall," said Albert C. Go, a member of the family.

The six-storey building, called Qimonda IT Center, will be completed by December this year, Mr. Go said. It will have leasable spaces of 3,800 square meters per floor. The first floor will be devoted to food outlets, wellness centers and logistics offices while the rest will be for BPOs. Qimonda has contracted real estate management firm Jones Lang LaSalle Leechiu to market and manage the building.

"There are quite a number of BPOs that have expressed interest and approached us through Jones Lang," he said, but declined to name the prospective locators.

The building has been registered with the Philippine Economic Zone Authority (PEZA) and is awaiting declaration as an IT building. If plans to further develop the entire property proceeded well, Mr. Go said the property could be declared as an IT park upon approval by PEZA.

The property has been with the Go family for over a decade but has remained idle until now.

Mr. Go was optimistic that the company will be fully leased upon its completion because Cebu was recently named by investment advisory firm Tholons as the top emerging global outsourcing destination. Cebu currently has only one IT park and around 20 IT buildings. -

Western Wats Cebu still operating (http://www.philstar.com/Article.aspx?articleId=435823&publicationSubCategoryId=108)

Contrary to reports that Western Wats Cebu operation has gradually cut down on its job volumes and shut down, Cebu Investments Promotions Center (CIPC) confirmed that the Cebu facility is still operating and in fact, is the most productive among its facilities worldwide.

Western Wats Idaho is the one that closed and not the Cebu facility, CIPC said yesterday.

Western Wats now has over 13 phone centers. The Cebu facility being the first outside North America, is the largest and fastest growing, among its network.

Located at the Mactan Export Processing Zone (2), Western Wats Cebu started its operations in 2003, one of the first few call centers that opened in the province.

In August of last year, Western Wats Philippines Inc., opened its second facility in the country in Davao City.

The Cebu phone center is a wholly owned subsidiary of Western Wats and is exclusively dedicated to survey research. The facility is also directed by executive management at its headquarter in Orem, Utah. Cebu facility currently occupies three floors and employs more than 1,500 full time employees who operate 700 interviewing stations.

CIPC managing director Joel Mari S. Yu said in an interview with The Freeman earlier that hearsays on Western Wats closing down or having massive lay-offs may not be because of the global economic crisis, but rather may be due to ownership and internal issues faced by the company.

Yu downplayed impressions that the BPO industry, especially the call center sector will be affected by the economic downturn, and may resort to massive lay-offs in the next few months, saying, "The more outsourcing jobs will be dumped in the Philippines, as America or Europe based companies are streamlining their costs of operations."

"What's the use of keeping jobs in the States? Their [companies in US/Europe] main concern now is how to stay alive," Yu said reiterating that the more call centers and other e-Services related jobs will be expected in the Cebu in the next few months, instead of seeing retrenchments from the BPO sector.

In fact, Cebu aims to host about 20 percent of the BPO investment target of the Philippines by 2010. The national government is targeting to generate a total of US$12.99 billion, from BPO software industry alone.

According to Cebu Educational Development for Information Technology (Cedfit), with Cebu's edge in this area, the province is seen to get US$255 million of this entire national target.

As of end of December 2008, record showed that there are 5,000 software developers in Cebu, while the BPO industry in the province employs 22,000 workers.
