I'm crying out loud because I was accused of making non-sense, mudslinging and bad talking here. And I am so sorry, the only thing I can contribute is posting some of my opinions regarding this and that. Another thing is why there's at least 2 people (you and Mr Q, if he still ...) think that I'm making nuisance over this thread while most of the time I just post simple response and do none of the bad things you've mentioned. AND I swear to god I'm not the other two douches who talk rubbish and boast of their own city. Yeah I posted something like river murky, is that TOO BAD? If it is, grand apologize from me. The fact that I'm not from KK myself, I also pointing out some of the bad stuff going on in KK, and it is the same category when i said the sarawak river is murky. And I'm not from Kuching either, and I've been there. I did not have a real good experience because of the haze engulfed the city, and it would have been a lot of amazing experience I could enjoyed if the haze wasn't there. Surely I would love to visit the city again someday, in fact, I'll be embarking on my career in Miri sometime in 2011 and I'm very looking forward to that.

The river you see here if by far much clearer and cleaner then, say in the 80's back then, Sungai Sarawak was used as the means to float logs from upstream, leaving it murkier with lot of floating debris. Not to mention dead carcasses and entrails from the then "Pasar".
What you see now is the initiative by the relevant authority as they recognize the potential of "selling" Sungai Sarawak... On most days, I dare say only 1 or 2 Styrofoam boxes would be seen floating and at worst, a few floating plastic bags...Still there is some room for improvement.
What we should all realize is that everyone plays an important role is ensuring the rivers in Sarawak is clean always...it is the level of awareness among the people that counts!

Yohanes November 5th, 2009, 05:44 AM Standard Parade to invest RM220 mln in City One
By Arveena M and Geryl Ogilvy
KUCHING: Standard Parade Sdn Bhd (Standard Parade) is investing an estimated RM220 million in its upmarket shopping mall City One incorporating the ‘green building’ technology to be completed by Christmas 2011.Speaking at its earth-breaking ceremony yesterday, Standard Parade’s managing director Dr Sin Kuoh Swee said the new mall, City One, was set to be an upmarket trendy shopping mall offering new architectural environment of retail experiences and lifestyle and would be a bold approach in this commercial development to elevate the quality of the building industry, setting a standard for future development to follow.
“I am very proud to be here this morning to share with you my much cherished dream, a dream to transform 8.9 acres into a prime destination for avid shoppers and trend setters residing in this great city of Kuching. This dream is about to come true and I call this destination City One”, Dr Sin said.
After the initial land purchased three years ago at RM25 million, Standard Parade begin it’s planning for City One a year later with an integration of the new concept, the green building, which it believed was a necessary step to undertake on its part with the world evolving in that direction.
He explained that out of the allocated amount, some 15 per cent to 20 per cent has been used up for expenses such as the basic infrastructure, taking up an estimated three to four million, bank loan interest for the past three years amounting to an estimated five to six million and other miscellaneous expenditures like planners, consultants as well as sales and marketing.
“The whole sum is only an estimated allocation, it is yet to be seen how far we accommodate this green building concept simply because it is a new kind of technology altogether. We may have added expenditure at the end of the day but we are doing our part and we are still sourcing out the best ways and means, price as well as the best technology that will aid us in achieving the concept,” he stated.
The ballpark project development cost may also inflate due to materials that will be purchased for the construction mainly steel bars and pitumens, which have increased in price earlier this year by ten per cent, Dr Sin added as he was explaining the other reasons that may cause the current allocated budget to increase.
When Dr Sin was asked as to what were Standard Parade’s expectations for selling price or tenancy rates for City One, he affirmed that, “As of now, we are not concentrating on the selling prices yet as we are more keen in securing City One’s anchor tenant. We do have a few options but it is yet to be decided and since the anchor tenant has to decide the dimension it is going to take up, it is out main priority.”
After which, he confirmed that with all the floor allocations planned out, the company will approach its targeted potential mix of buyers and tenants. “We are going to be very selective with our potential buyers and tenants because we want City One to encompass only the best possible which in turn will then enable us to provide Sarawakians our selective best,” he emphasised.
When the subject of joint ventures and partnerships was broached, Dr Sin clarified that, “At the moment we do not have joint ventures or partnerships with anyone, probably because we are comfortable with our current position and aptitude as well as the full control that we have over everything that takes place is very valuable to us.”
Having said that, he commented that should there be a joint venture or partnership proposal that is deemed interesting, they would definitely be open to it.
“Appealing proposals may not have to be only from East Malaysia, if interesting proposals come from West Malaysia, we will be more than thrilled to see where it can lead us. Our options are definitely open,” he said.
The new mall will be a commercial hub featuring two blocks of three-and-four storey shopping malls to be linked by sky-bridges and piazza featuring state-of-the-art facilities appealing to those looking for business outlets that can enhance their business images and prestige.
There will be more than 400 strata-titled retail lots of sizes ranging from 22sq mts to 520sq mts, flanking a climate controlled street mall which will be made possible by utilising the green technology.
To bring the concept to life, the architectural design evolves around the consideration for sustainable design such as harvesting of rainwater for landscaping and plumbing, decorative sunscreen that acts as a heat buffer between the outside environment and the shopping space inside.
The design will also create natural airflow and ventilation to the covered street mall cutting down excessive air conditioning, integrated building system which lessens the carbon footprint impact and barrier free design for all walks of life. It will also have three rooftop garden pavilions that will give a sense of serenity.
Having a gross floor area of 68,000 sq mts with lots of innovative features, the mall’s strategic location along Jalan Song and Jalan Tun Jugah is indisputable and the layout plan provides maximum exposure of all shopping lots to the shoppers. The main attraction however, will be the spectacular night view of the mall that resembles a light box.
“To plan any kind of new concept will be a costly one, hence our plan for City One to be small, which we would prefer it to be, compact yet comprehensive. Kuching citizens deserve to have such technology at their disposal, deserve to experience it,” said Dr Sin.
Deputy chief minister Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Alfred Jabu performed the earth breaking ceremony and present alongside him were Assistant Public Utilities Minister Sylvester Entrie Muran, Kuching City South Mayor James Chan and Standard Parade general manager Barry Tan.
City One will be a new modern landmark that the city can be proud to display as it caters for a mixed market and shoppers from all walks of life.

KUCHING: Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Alfred Jabu hoped that future shopping complexes in Sarawak will incorporate modern concepts and green technology like the upcoming City One Shopping Mall to be built here.
He said the government encouraged shopping centres and supermarkets that provide such features as easy access and convenient parking for clients and shoppers.
Jabu commended the developers of the RM220 million City One Shopping Mall for choosing the strategic location near the junction of Jalan Tun Jugah (a busy protocol road leading to Kuching International Airport) and the two busy intersections at Jalan Song-Jalan Laksamana Muda.
“The shopping complex will use green technology and a recycling concept featuring ventilation to reduce air conditioning costs.
The provision for easy shoppers traffic flow within the complex with the sky bridges and piazzas is indeed very commendable, and certainly is trending with modernity, something that we are fast adapting to,” Jabu said.
Jabu said it would also provide great opportunities for business entrepreneurs to own and operate the 400 strata-titled shop-lots.
“I would like to congratulate the management of Standard Parade Sdn Bhd for their foresight in locating the shopping mall at this very strategic location,” Jabu said when officiating at the earth-breaking ceremony yesterday.
Jabu said the government was happy to see a healthy development throughout Sarawak where towns and cities were well-planned with (de-centralised)shopping centres catering for the satellites areas so as not to cause congestion along those roads leading to the city centre.
City One Shopping Mall is located on a 8.9-acre site. According to Standard Parade’s Managing Director, Dr Sin Kuoh Swee, it would be completed within 24 months.
It would have more than 400 strata-titled retail lots and would only be sold to selected buyers. It is targeted at the medium and high-end markets.
Meanwhile, five charitable organisations received RM10,000 each from the company during the function yesterday.
The Assistant Minister of Public Utilities Sylvester Entri, MBKS Mayor James Chan Khay Syn , General Manager Barry Tan Chong Liang and Project consultant and principal of Artemas Architect, Chiew Chung Yee were also present.

AZIZ/HIKMAH
Various projects had been planned by BINA-HIKMAH to generate income and to ensure the organization is self-sufficient.
BINA-HIKMAH president Tan Sri Datuk Amar Haji Abdul Aziz Bin Dato Haji Husain says among the projects is Wisma Hikmah located at Jalan Haji Taha Kuching which will make sure that BINA-HIKMAH has the potential and capability to compete with other organizations in order to generate more income consistently.
He said in his welcoming speech at the official opening of BINA-HIKMAH 40th Anniversary by the Chief Minister at Petra Jaya in Kuching today.
Tan Sri Datuk Amar Aziz said on the other hand, the organization had also planned to establish a few more Hikmah Kindergartens throughout Sarawak as it is a way to develop human capital among local citizens.
He said, meanwhile, the economic and job opportunities in the field of agriculture is also under BINA-HIKMAH's consideration so that the rural people will benefit from it towards improving their living standard.
By doing and achieving this, Tan Sri Datuk Amar Haji Abdul Aziz Bin Dato Haji Husain hoped that they will be more sincere towards Islam.

KUCHING: City One, a new upmarket retail and commercial development, is designed with ‘green building’ features which will complement the government’s policy of sustainable environment.
The architectural design evolves around the consideration for a sustainable design which includes harvesting of rain water for landscaping and plumbing, decorative sunscreen that acts as a heat buffer between the outside environment and the shopping space inside, natural airflow and ventilation to covered street mall thus cutting down excessive use of air-conditioning, integrated building system lessening carbon footprint impact and
barrier free design for all walks of life.
The three rooftop gardens are both for enjoyment for shoppers as well as ecological consideration.
“City One features two blocks of three- and four-storey shopping malls to be linked by pedestrian skybridges and a piazza on the ground level.
There will be more than 400 strata titled retail lots of sizes ranging from 22 sq metres to 520 sq metres, flanking a climate controlled street mall.
We will make this possible by utilising green technology, a small part that we can play to preserve the quality of the environment.
To bring the concept to life, we will also have three rooftop garden pavilions that will give a sense of serenity,” said the project developer Standard Parade Sdn Bhd Managing Director Dr. Sin Kuoh Swee in his opening remarks yesterday.
The earth breaking ceremony for the project was graced by the presence of Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Tan Sir Alfred Jabu Anak Nyumpang.
Located on a 8.9 acres piece of land at the junction of Jalan Song and Jalan Tun Jugah, City One will have a gross floor area of 68,000 sq metres , providing value-for-money properties with the added advantage of a highly visible location with completion date
scheduled before Christmas 2011.

Sarawak Hidro Sdn Bhd’s general manager (civil) Tan Yong Long said each turbine could produce 300MW of electricity.
He said the 205m-high concrete-faced rockfill dam, the world’s second highest after the 233m-high Shubuya dam in China, had an installed capacity of 2,400MW.
The bulk of the electricity will be exported to the peninsula through undersea submarine cables, the first of which is expected to be ready by 2016.
“The project’s main civil works are now 95% completed. The electrical and mechanical package is more than 90% complete,” he told a media briefing on the dam’s progress here on Wednesday night.
Sarawak Hidro, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Ministry of Finance Inc, is the project developer and manager.
Tan said the second turbine is expected to be commissioned three months after the first, and the dam would be fully operational by 2011.
He said impounding was expected to start in January by the latest, and that it would take eight months for the water level at the reservoir to reach the minimum operational level for tests to be carried out.
The reservoir will have a surface area of 695 sq km – the size of Singapore – when the water level reaches the maximum operating level of elevation at 228m.
The Bakun catchment area covers some 14,750 sq m, which is as big as Kelantan.
Tan said biomass removal through open burning and covering 455ha of the reservoir was now 80% complete. The entire job would be finished by next month.
“Works to remove the biomass started in January. It is tedious and labour intensive.”
On the rescue of wildlife, he said ground monitoring work to build up the wildlife inventory started two months ago.
The wildlife would be relocated with the help of the Sarawak Forestry Corporation.
Allaying fears on the dam’s safety, Tan said: “Earthquake is not an issue. It will not make the dam fail.”
However, he said instruments to detect earthquakes would be installed.
#omg..i never knew tat bakun has so much intertesting facts..as big as kelantan...hu3 the rockfill dam is the world 2nd highest...tis is a must be tourist attraction men..sarawak will be famous once the bakun operate, locally & internationally..wat they need to do now is to make sure all the wildlife are kept safe..

VASES of different shapes and sizes.
ANTONIA CHIAM
Just somewhere outside the city centre, a haven exists for souvenir hunters. It is not a rare sight to see tourist buses making stops at this stretch of road en route to the airport or from other places of attraction.
This is Jalan Penrissen, or more popularly known as Mile 5 area. Pottery factories dotted both sides of this road, and every factory has a showroom at its front to showcase the finished goods. This is where tourists and locals alike are seen hunting for the well-known Sarawak pottery products.
Most, if not all, of these pottery factories are owned by Teochew Chinese families, having inherited the trade from their forefathers who came to Sarawak in the 19th century. The early Teochew potters produced limited amount of clay-made vessels, mostly for household use.
Over time, the originally-Chinese pottery products were adapted to incorporate traditional Dayak designs and colours, giving them the unique Sarawakian look that are now so famous.
Today, pottery products are not confined to the usual flower vases and pots. They can be in the form of decorative jars, candle holders, coffee mugs, ashtrays, drinking water vessels, coin boxes and table lamps, among many other possible items. Because of their distinctive designs and motifs, they are popular souvenirs and even corporate gifts.

Adding designs to a vase.
The fascinating part while at these pottery factories is not the vast display of pottery products on sale, although they are supposed to be the main attractions, but is the potters at work behind.
Every potter will tell you that the most important element in pottery-making is the clay. With nimble fingers and incomparable mastery, a potter can do wonders to an ordinary lump of clay.
The potter begins by working a lump of clay, adding water to soften it into moulding consistency. He then places it on a motorised pottery wheel, pressing his thumbs into the centre of the clay to make the hollow opening. With wet fingers, he works the way up the clay to make it into its desired shape. Slowly but surely, the form of a beautiful vase takes shape under the almost-magical fingers of the potter.
When the vase is finished, any designs would have to be etched into the surface while it is still damp. After that, it will be left to dry, either in the sun or indoors. Once it is completely dry, it is ready for paintworks and glazing.
The final step would be firing.
In the old days until the recent years, the potters here used traditional Anagama kilns.
These tunnel kilns were about 25 metres in length and could easily hold up to a thousand pots of varying sizes at one time.
However, the heat was not evenly distributed so positioning of the pots was very important to produce optimal result. Smaller pots were usually placed under lower temperature while bigger pieces were placed under the highest temperature. Firing took about 48 hours or more in a traditional kiln.
Of course, today the potteries no longer use the old wood-fired kilns, replacing them with gas-fired kilns. Modern gas-fired kilns allow exact temperature control, more time-efficient and are less of an air pollutant.
Once done with the firing process, the finished product will go to the display in the showroom, all set to be snapped up
by the next discerning souvenir hunter.
The uniqueness of Sarawak pottery attracts many foreign fans. Nobu Matsuike, who was in Kuching recently, admitted that whenever he comes here, he would make it a point to buy back a few pieces of pottery products, either for his own collection or as souvenirs.“I love the traditional designs. I collect vases and jars from all over the world, but none as beautifully-crafted as Sarawak pottery.
Sarawak is famous for many things, but to me, pottery is still the number one product that the people of Sarawak should cherish and develop. Don’t ever let it become a dying trade,” said the Osaka-based retired college professor.
Matsuike, who has around 300 vases of various sizes, designs and origins in his ever-growing collection, also noticed how delighted his friends and associates were when he gave them ashtrays and mugs from Sarawak.
“My friends display them proudly in their homes,” he said.As Sarawakians, we ought to be proud that pottery, a seemingly simple cottage industry, has now become an irresistible piece of unique Sarawak, well-appreciated even beyond our shores.

Kuching to host Malaysia Global Business Forum — Bosnia Herzegovina
KUCHING: A forum aimed at exposing and exploring business opportunities in Bosnia-Herzegovina will be held here from Nov 8 to 11.
The Malaysia Global Business Forum — Bosnia Herzegovina, organised by Glenreagh Sdn Bhd, will be held at the Borneo Convention Centre Kuching (BCCK).
Glenreagh managing director Nordin Abdullah said yesterday Bosnia-Herzegovina had been reported as one of the faster growing economies in South Eastern Europe, with a steady growth of five per cent per year since 2000.
“Bosnia-Herzegovina is one of the most stable countries in Europe. In addition, it will enter the European Union (EU) in a few years.
“Bosnia-Herzegovina is the gateway to the European market. However, there is not enough business going on in Bosnia-Herzegovina by Malaysian companies,” he told a press conference held at BCCK yesterday.
He pointed out that ‘halal’ food and renewable energy were the two key areas that businesses in Malaysia could consider in Bosnia-Herzegovina.
In order to further enhance that strong relationship between Malaysia and Bosnia-Herzegovina, various joint ventures between the two nations had been established, said Nordin.
For instance, Nordin said, the cooperation could be seen in the area of higher education, information technology and transportation.
“Besides, Bosnia-Herzegovina is a culturally diverse country which is very similar to Malaysia. I believe that the cultural similarity would be an advantage for Malaysian businesses,” he said.
The four-day forum would see the presence of heads of states and trade ministers while the most prominent figure would be former Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad, said Nordin.
He explained that Dr Mahathir who during his tenure as the prime minister had been instrumental in providing the much needed support for Bosnia-Herzegovina and its people.
“Among the renowned speakers and presenters expected at the forum is Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad who will be the keynote speaker at the dinner.
“From Bosnia-Herzegovina are Bosnia Bank International chief executive officer Amer Bukvic and Foreign Trade Chamber of Bosnia-Herzegovina secretary general Tarik Dodic,” he said.
For further information on the Malaysia Global Business Forum — Bosnia-Herzegovina, members of the public can visit the official website at www.malaysiaglobalbusinessforum.com or contact the forum secretariat at 03-42511850 03-42511850 or email to glenreagh@gmail.com.

kiko November 10th, 2009, 05:56 AM Six new faces; three dropped
By Zora Chan
Revamp to prepare Sarawak for new development policies and approaches: CM
KUCHING: The much anticipated state cabinet reshuffle saw changed portfolios for some ministers while six new faces were appointed as assistant ministers yesterday. The new cabinet line-up will take effect on Dec 1 and the new appointees will be sworn in at a later date.
The new faces are Abdul Wahab Aziz who has been appointed Assistant Minister of Rural Development and Assistant Minister of Housing and Urban Development; Datuk Talib Zulpilip as Assistant Minister of Tourism; Dr Stephen Rundi Utom as Assistant Minister of Public Health and Assistant Minister of Public Utilities; Datuk Peter Nansian Ngusie as Assistant Minister of Environment; John Sikie Tayai as Assistant Minister in the Chief Minister’s Department and Assistant Minister of Rural District Council; and Mong Dagang as Assistant Minister of Agriculture (Research and Co-ordination) and Assistant Minister of Tourism.
Wahab, Talib and Dr Rundi are from Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB), Nansian is from Sarawak Progressive Democratic Party (SPDP), while Sikie and Mong are from Parti Rakyat Sarawak (PRS).
Three assistant ministers, namely Datuk Bolhassan Di (Assistant Minister in the Chief Minister’s Department (Information Technology) and Assistant Minister of Infrastructure Development and Communication; Datuk Hamden Ahmad (Assistant Minister of Youth and Assistant Minister of Tourism); and Datuk Ambrose Blikau (Assistant Minister of Rural Development and Assistant Minister of Public Utilities) were dropped.Chief Minister Pehin Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud said the reorganisation was meant to prepare Sarawak for new development policies and approaches that could take place some time in the 10th Malaysia Plan (10MP) or after the next state election.
“There’s no major cabinet reshuffle until after the next state election,” he told a media conference at Wisma Bapa Malaysia here.
Taib, who retained the Finance, and Planning and Resource Management Minister portfolios, said with the Sarawak Corridor of Renewable Energy (SCORE) coming up, he would reform Syarikat Sesco Bhd (Sesco) in the next one or two years.
He said Second Planning and Resource Management Minister Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hassan, who is also Public Utilities Minister, would be assisting him.
On his two deputies, Taib said he had assigned Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Dr George Chan to Tourism and Heritage Minister’s portfolio, while Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Alfred Jabu Numpang to the Modernisation of Agriculture Minister’s portfolio.
Dr Chan retains his portfolio of Industrial Development Minister while Jabu retains his post of Rural Development Minister.
He said his two deputies had specific missions this time around with Dr Chan focusing on rationalisation of research particularly in agriculture because research should be in the forefront of the sector; not backstage.
He explained that he had placed the research component under Dr Chan as the latter had done a good job in information technology development in the state.
“Research findings will signal where to change our policy concerning agriculture,” he said.
Dr Chan would also have new responsibilities in tourism to come up with a more systematic approach for the sector particularly in meetings, incentives, conferences and exhibitions (MICE) industry, he said.
Taib said since Jabu was “quite good” in agriculture and the sector had close relation to rural development, he expected Jabu to come up with a more aggressive agriculture policy after the next state election.
The policy should be in line with the federal government’s efforts to eradicate poverty, he said.
He said Dato Sri James Masing retained his portfolio as Land Develop-ment Minister and that he (Taib) expected to see gradual improvement on the mechanism to sort out native customary rights (NCR) land claims.
“NCR land claims cannot be handled through normal settlement,” he said.
He proposed a new concept – Native Estate Exchange – to be introduced after the state election whereby land owners with five acres or less would have the choice to invest.
Taib said there was no way to separate Social Development and Urbanisation Ministry which is held by Dato Sri William Mawan Ikom, which, according to him, covers a large area of concerns.
However, Mawan will now have three assistants, namely Datin Fatimah Abdullah who will be in charge of Assistant Minister of Women Development; Datuk Lee Kim Shin as Assistant Minister of Sports; and Larry Sng as Assistant Minister of Youth Affairs and Training of Youths.
Taib said: “The challenge of this ministry is to update and upgrade the welfare list that must be done soon because the federal government is introducing assistance to help those with income below the poverty line.”
He said the main problem was that the majority of people in need did not know that there were aids available to them, and where to get them.
He said when they received no aid, they complained.
“Anybody with problems like not being able to make ends meet (for example) widows or unemployed single mothers should register with the ministry and be welfare recipients,” he said.
Datuk Amar Abang Johari Tun Openg would continue to hold the housing portfolio which had been merged with urban development, said Taib.
One of the new tasks for the Minister of Housing and Urban Development would to develop Kuching City as a model for future towns and cities in Sarawak, he said.
He said Johari would also look into improving public transport system, which he described as “still far off”, and the one challenge of getting people to like using public transport.
“The attitude of the public is that people who use public transport are those who can’t afford to have good cars. But in developed countries, they don’t have that kind of mentality,” he said.
He said the people needed to change their perspective on public transport because the government could not afford to improve it unless there were sufficient people using the system.
Taib said Environment and Public Health Minister Dato Sri Wong Soon Koh would have to work closely with the Public Utilities Ministry from now on to see how environmental issues could be addressed on a sustainable basis.
Dato Sri Michael Manyin Jawong would take over Infrastructure Development and Communication Ministry, he said.
He also said Sikie, who is currently the Deputy Speaker of the State Legislative Assembly, would be supervising matters concerning Adat Istiadat Court besides going to the ground to assist in rural district councils that often faced financial problems.
Nansian’s working experience in Bintulu Development Authority (BDA) would be an asset to him, said the chief minister.
To a question, Taib said he did not appoint any assemblymen from Sarawak United People’s Party (SUPP) as assistant ministers due to insufficient representation from the party.
“If I appoint two, all or 100 per cent will be in the government. If I do that, PBB will ask for 10,” he said.
SUPP lost two assistant minister seats when Datuk Sim Kheng Hui and Datuk Alfred Yap lost in the 2006 state election.
“There’ll be new female in the next term. I don’t appoint ‘first-termers’,” he said, adding that the first term for any assemblymen or women was for them to learn the traits of being politicians and how to communicate with government agencies.
He said ‘first-termers’ should concentrate on serving their constituents otherwise they would not have time for their people.
He also explained that no new faces had been appointed as full ministers because the present ministers had more experience.
“If we get a fresh one, the new guy may be struggling (with his new appointment),” he said.
Also present at the press conference were Dr Chan, Jabu, Johari, Masing, Mawan, State Secretary Datuk Amar Morshidi Abdul Ghani and State Attorney-General Datuk Razak Tready.

Small mall is convenient if it is located in city outskirt and away from the major malls, where the residences do not need to travel far just to do shopping.

well i guess tis is time when the education start..public transport shouldnt only for immigrants.

More international events to boost sports tourism
LH Cheng
KUCHING: Sarawak will have to organise international sport events to gear towards sport tourism, said Datuk Lee Kim Shin, the newly appointed Assistant Minister of Sports.
“We can organise international sport events to attract overseas participants and their families to come to Sarawak. This is sport tourism and it is a big industry that we should tap,” said Lee when interviewed at the sideline during the State Legislative Assembly sitting yesterday.
He pointed out that there were more than a hundred sports, for example, sport fishing, which the State could actually tap for sport tourism.
“I will work closely with Dato Sri William Mawan to get the job done,” he added.
Lee reiterated that sports had been an important part of the development of the State as it served as a way to unite people and increase interaction among the people.
“Sports can help to strengthen solidarity and enhance understanding among the people. It also helps to improve the general health of the people,” he said.
Lee said the Ministry would organise sport events at both international and national level to facilitate the participation of the general public.
“Participation in sports will draw young people away from social ill or prevent them from indulging in bad habits.
“I have been receiving a lot of complaints from parents who said their children had been glued to the Internet. Every day, they are either on Facebook or Internet chat. Youngsters today seem to have lost interest in sport events and activities.”
“Now, the department finds it difficult to look for good young athletes because the young people are no longer interested in sports,” said Lee.
In view of such situation, the Ministry will have to organise more sport events to attract young people to sports.
kiko November 10th, 2009, 09:34 AM Ex-MAS senior officer to head STB: Manyin
By Lee Ya Yun
KUCHING: Malaysia Airlines (MAS) former commercial director Datuk Rashid Khan is expected to be appointed as the new chief executive officer (CEO) of Sarawak Tourism Board (STB) starting Nov 16.Urban Development and Tourism Minister Dato Sri Michael Manyin yesterday confirmed that Rashid was selected, but he has not seen any official documents on the appointment yet.
“It is confirmed, but I have not got the official letter of appointment. I was told that he (Rashid) would start on the 16 of this month,” he told reporters on the sidelines of the State Legislative Assembly sitting yesterday.
He explained that Rashid was chosen because he possessed vast experiences in the airline and tourism industries which would benefit STB.
It is learnt that Rashid retired from MAS last month. The last STB CEO was Gracie Geikie, who completed her term in July this year after serving four years.
On his appointment as Infrastructure Development and Communication Minister from Dec 1, Manyin said he did not expect to be given a different portfolio.
“Actually, it is a surprise. I thought I’d be in (Ministry of Urban Development and) Tourism because I have only been in the ministry for one year and two months,” he said.
Asked whether he was disappointed with the appointment, Manyin replied: “Not to say disappointed, but I thought I’d be staying (in current ministry).”
He explained that with the new appointment, he would miss some unfinished tasks which he had planned.
“Actually, I have already made a few appointments with the Korean people, on Nov 21, one group from Korea is coming here to discuss something. There is a chartered flight from Korea coming here too on Dec 21. But now I would miss,” he said.

jingPENGboy November 10th, 2009, 11:48 AM hahaha... we have a lot of shophouses to do that. Kuching-Samarahan, The land of shophouses and small mall. lol.
There are many reasons for the mushrooming of shophouses all over sarawak. Sarawakians invest in shophouses apart from putting fix deposits. with lots of demands, hence the big supply. one family may own 1 or more shophouses nowadays. with a shophouse, you can do anything. you can start your business or rent it. you can open your shop at 7am and close it at 12 midnight unlike a mall which has time limit and lots of rentals and in the end, you still can't own a pole inside the mall. Shophouse is a better investment than money as the value increases faster than the 3-5% interest that we get from fix deposits.
However, of course, as kiasu citizens like malaysians and singaporeans (& dubaians), we hope for mega malls and everything else mega.
The batu lintang development better be well-planned. it s good to see development, but we want healthy and well-organised city.
jingPENGboy November 10th, 2009, 11:49 AM Taib wants more federal money for development
Chief Minister Pehin Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud yesterday called for more funds from the federal government so that the state could intensify its development programmes and projects. He said he hoped that the federal government would be sympathetic to the state’s requests particularly for achieving the Key Result Areas of Balanced Regional Development and Accessibility to Physical and Social Infrastructures.
“With the 1Malaysia spirit, Sarawak should be provided with more funds by the federal government, especially for roads, bridges, housing, education, health, rural water and electricity supplies, and industrial and tourism infrastructure,” he said when tabling the State Budget 2010.
Therefore, Taib, who is also Finance Minister, urged all government departments and agencies to bid for more allocations from the relevant authorities at the federal level.
He said Sarawak was still very much behind compared to other states in terms of infrastructure development due to its size and geographical conditions.
“An efficient transport and communications network is a fundamental prerequisite for economic development of the state,” he said.
Taib said well-developed infrastructure would reduce production costs and improve resource accessibility, mobility and attractiveness for investment.
“This is especially so in the Sarawak Corridor of Renewable Energy (SCORE) where there is an urgent need to accelerate infrastructural development.
“In this regard, we would seek greater federal support for the development of infrastructure and utilities,” he said.
jingPENGboy November 10th, 2009, 11:51 AM State’s clean bill of health
Sarawak 2008 public accounts pass with flying colours for 7th consecutive year
KUCHING: Sarawak received a clean bill of health with regards to its 2008 public accounts from the Auditor General of Malaysia, making this the seventh consecutive year it had passed the assessment with flying colours.Despite this, Chief Minister and Finance Minister Pehin Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud wants all controlling officers as well as heads of ministries, departments and agencies to view the observations and weaknesses in the Auditor General’s Report seriously.
“Take remedial actions and ensure that the same weaknesses do not recur,” he said.
“I also wish to emphasise that we must continue to sustain our clean bill of health into the future.”
This happy news came during Taib’s speech on the State Budget 2010 at the State Legislative Assembly (DUN) sitting yesterday.
He also said that the state’s credit rating was maintained at investment-grade status despite the global financial and economic downturn which has adversely affected the credit standing of many entities around the world.
“Moody’s has affirmed the state’s investment-grade credit rating at Baa1 with a slight revision upwards from Stable to Positive Outlook, while Standard & Poor’s maintains the rating at A- with Stable Outlook,” Taib said.
He added that the commendable investment grades indicate the strong confidence of the international rating agencies in the state’s sound financial position and effective financial and fiscal management.
“I would say that these are the results of disciplined, prudent and conservative ways of managing the state’s financial and fiscal affairs.”
Compliance with the financial regulations and instructions issued by authorities concerned is the key to ensure a high level of accountability and transparency in the public service.
“This will also bring about a work culture that continuously strives to enhance and improve the overall level of financial management through the adoption of best practices,” he said.
Taib thanked all controlling officers of ministries, departments, local authorities and statutory bodies and chief executive officers of government-linked companies (GLCs) who practised disciplined and sound financial management, transparency and prudent spending.
He also reminded them and their subsidiary and associate companies to perform their duties and responsibilities diligently.
“Strive for continuous improvement in financial management and uphold the value of accountability at all times.”

KUCHING: A sum of RM2.78 billion has been allocated for the development of Sarawak next year, revealed Chief Minister Pehin Sri Haji Abdul Taib Mahmud, in his budget speech at the 16th State Legislative Assembly sitting yesterday.
He said the government had taken into consideration, among others, its commitment to implement and complete development projects approved under the 9th Malaysia Plan (9MP).
Also taken into account are the government’s financial position and the capacity of the state agencies to implement projects next year.
Taib also disclosed that of the RM2.78 billion allocated, RM2.25 billion would be funded by the State, while the balance (RM528 million) would come from the Federal government through reimbursements and loans.
“The sum of RM2.78 billion has been allocated for next year based on projec-ted expenditure commitments and requirements for approved development programmes and activities, especially for the implementation of projects approved under the 9MP,” he said.
Forty-six per cent of the allocation or RM1.27 billion will be for commerce and industry sectors - for the implementation of various projects and activities, including investments and the development of industrial estates and tourism promotion. Development grants and loans to statutory bodies are also included in the allocation.
A sum of RM493 million will be for the expansion and upgrading of public utilities, mainly for water supply to rural areas.
Eleven per cent or RM316 million will be used for the improvement of government facilities and to further enhance its delivery system.
Agriculture, land and rural development will receive RM213 million, mainly for plantation development, drainage and irrigation, assistance to farmers, veterinary services, fisheries, agricultural research and forestry programmes.
A sum of RM277 million (10%) has been allocated for transport and communications, especially for road, bridge and port development, while RM207 million (7%) has been set aside for social and community development sector, which includes housing and resettlement schemes, sports and recreational facilities, and community and welfare services.
The Chief Minister said that with the proposed budget for 2010, the total development allocation under the 9MP would come to RM12.5 billion, RM2.5 billion more than the original provision of RM10 billion.
“The money will be well spent for the development of the State and for the well-being of the rakyat,” he said.

nazrey November 11th, 2009, 04:59 AM Move to cut pollution in Kuching waterways
Wednesday November 11, 2009
KUCHING: Sarawak is introducing a centralised sewage system in the city to reduce pollution in its waterways.
State Urban Development and Tourism Minister Datuk Michael Manyin said Package 1 of the system was currently under construction and would be completed by October 2012.
He said the system would address the deteriorating water quality in rivers and streams due to discharge of untreated or partially treated waste.
Currently, water from toilets is only partially treated in conventional septic tanks while water from bathrooms, kitchens and washing areas are discharged without treatment.
Under the new system, waste water will be collected and transported to a treatment plant to be treated to the Department of Environment’s Standard A for effluent discharge.
Standard A is deemed clean and safe for water-based activities.
“As such, the implementation of the project will manage water pollution and improve the quality of Sungai Sarawak and other rivers to ensure a sustainable environment for city folk,” Manyin said during the project launch at the civic centre here yesterday.
He said the RM530mil Package 1 was funded by the Federal Govern*ment under the Ninth Malaysia Plan with Kumpulan-Nishimatsu-Hock Seng Lee Consortium as the turnkey contractor.
Package 1 covers the commercial and densely-populated areas of the central business district and comprises a centralised water treatment plant, a sewer network and property connections to the new sewer lines.
Manyin also said the state government planned to extend the project under the Tenth Malaysia Plan, with a proposed Package 2 covering east and west of the city centre and Package 3 covering the northern bank of Sungai Sarawak.
nazrey November 11th, 2009, 06:57 AM Dealing with future clean water shortfall in Kuching
By Rintos Mail Wednesday, November 11th, 2009
KUCHING: The central sewage system is believed to be a promising approach to address clean water shortage here in the years to come.Chief Minister Pehin Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud said yesterday the government’s greatest challenge ahead was to provide good clean water to the people, especially those in the urban areas.
He said the Sarawak River could be the last source of clean water for city dwellers in the future.
Currently, the river has high pollutants and bacteria content that are not safe for the people.
Taib said the growing rural-urban migration had resulted in more changes in the urban areas.
“Such changes demand new strategies for development, which attracted more people to urban areas for greater opportunities.
“As people are dragged into the modern economy, more people move to the towns. The increase in population demand more schools, more residential houses, etc, which in the end challenge our environment,” he said when launching the Kuching City Central Sewage System.
He said the greatest challenge, even at high costs, was to provide good clean water to the people.
“And that is why the Kuching City Central Sewage System is of great importance to us,” he added.
He said the government was constructing the Bengoh Dam to meet the increasing demand for clean water here, but it would not last long as the population continued to grow.
“The Bengoh Dam is all we have now as our source of clean water. After the Bengah Dam, I can’t think of other sources unless we start to conserve the quality of our rivers,” he added.
The chief minister said the government had over the years tried to minimise damages to the city’s environment to control the water quality in the river, but all those efforts would no longer be applicable in years to come.
“We will continue to conserve Sarawak River and improve the water quality. The Kuching Central Sewage System is our most practical approach to address this problem.
“For Sarawak River to be the main source of clean water, we can’t afford to allow black-water and grey-water to continue flowing directly into the river because it will affect the quality of the water,” he said.
Taib said the problem of sanitation could not be tackled by the state government alone as it needed huge funds.
He said while the state government tried its best to handle the problem, the federal government must help in the project funding.
He said the first phase of the project cost about RM530 million while the whole project would cost more than RM2 billion.“For the start, we can’t afford to pass the cost to the people. The project costs billions of ringgit, and only with the help of the federal government can we afford to implement the project,” he pointed out.
However, he said, as the system had to be maintained at all costs at high standard, the people might have to share the cost in the future.
When asked about the rate to be paid, he said a proper study would be carried out.
“We have not decided yet, but in future all have to share the cost of maintenance,” he added.
Urban Development and Tourism Minister Dato Sri Michael Manyin, Defence Minister of Bosnia Herzegovina Dr Selmo Cikotic and Ambassador of Bosnia Herzegovina to Malaysia Ensar Eminovic were among those present.

KUCHING: Sarawak has been hailed as the best example of the 1Malaysia concept outlined by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak.Housing Development Corporation chief executive officer Wan Mohd Yusop Wan Moss said this during a dinner on Thursday for Hilir Perak Neighbourhood Watch Committee (RT) members on a tour here.
“The people of Sarawak are diverse in culture and come from different ethnic groups living in harmony and this is an asset which we are proud of,” he said.
Yusop, who was representing Housing Minister Datuk Amar Abang Johari Tun Openg at the dinner, said the harmony experienced in the state was achieved through a high level of understanding, tolerance and respect.
He hoped the visit here would inspire the RT members.
The group also had a role to play in improving integrity in the country, he said, and in moving together to strengthen unity.
Yusop hoped the delegates would return home with good memories of their visit and help to realise the 1Malaysia concept.
Langkap Hilir RT deputy chairman Omar Musa said the group’s visit was made possible with the assistance of various agencies such as the National Civic Biro (BTN), National Unity and Integration Department (JPNIN), and Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (Unimas).
The Hilir Perak RT group is expected to return to Perak today.

KUCHING: The proposed multi-storey car park for the Sarawak General Hospital (SGH) is still nestled in the Ninth Malaysia Plan, said SGH Director Dr Zulkifli Jantan. “What we know is that it is still in the Ninth Malaysia Plan.
“Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Dr George Chan will bring this matter up in his winding-up speech in the State Legislative Assembly,” he said.
Zulkifli told reporters this during a visit to the SGH by four members of the Backbenchers Club yesterday.
He revealed that the proposed car park would be fourstoreys high and have at least 600 parking bays.
“It (car park) will only ease the congestion, but will not solve the problem,” said Dr Zulkifli.
When asked about the possibility of doubling the parking spaces by building an eight-storey building instead, Dr Zulkifli replied: “If we change the specifications now, the plan will get delayed. If we are building a car park higher than that (four storeys), I don’t think it will be cost effective anyway.”
He agreed that traffic congestion was a big concern for the SGH.
To alleviate the problem, he appealed to members of the public not to park at junctions, along narrow lanes, or at places which would block the route to the emergency ward.
The need for a multi-storey carpark at SGH is considered an “urgent” one by literally everyone. Looking for a parking space there is nothing short of an ordeal and illegal parking is very rampant.
---> 4-storey high is a waste of land. 8-storey seems logical. Anyways, Kch badly needs another GH.

It will also be Parkson Corp’s flagship store in the Sarawak capital.
Scheduled to open in the second quarter of 2012, it will be the store’s third outlet in Kuching and fifth in the state.

“It will be our flagship store and be slightly more upmarket than the current stores.
“We will bring in higher-end brands as we believe there is a market in the middle to upper segment here,” he said recently.
He added that the store would cater to the increasing number of tourists expected to visit Kuching in the coming years.
“We have a strong presence in China and Vietnam, so tourists from there will be familiar with our brand,” he said.
Meanwhile, Plaza Merdeka Holdings managing director Steve Ng said that the securing of Parkson as the anchor tenant would open up other retailing possibilities for the mall.
“We have pledged to work synergistically with their management team and are confident that the partnership will be a success that will benefit Plaza Merdeka and the surrounding retail streets,” he said.
The RM350mil Plaza Merdeka project consists of a mall and a 290-room hotel.
It is expected to be completed by March 2012.

KUCHING: Housing Minister Datuk Amar Abang Johari Tun Openg said he would talk to Sarawak Rivers Board (SRB) about the idea to promote river taxi services along the Sarawak River.
He told reporters yesterday that issues to be discussed would include safety aspects and guidelines related to water transport.
Johari said such services, if well received, would help to ease traffic congestion on roads along the river banks, especially in areas between Satok Bridge and Borneo Convention Centre Kuching.“Instead of having a hard time travelling along congested streets, the people can opt for another convenient mode of transport - river taxis,” he said.
He added that such services could be made more attractive and people-friendly by introducing new and additional features to the boats as well as developing and beautifying the riverbanks fronting the Malay traditional villages along Sarawak River.
“We will work together with Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS) on the new designs for the boats, which will be indigenous to our culture, with features that allow passengers to enjoy the scenery along the river.
“We are creating another ‘Venice’ here, and this augurs well for the promotion of our tourism industry,” he said at a press conference on the Satok Festival 2009, to be held from 25 to 27 December.”
He hoped that the people, especially the younger generation in Satok, would take advantage of the opportunities created by the implementation of such a project together with the other development taking place along the river.
Johari said that one of the development projects to be implemented in Satok was the new market to replace the present Pasar Satok. The proposed RM40 million new market (wet and dry), would be built near Kubah Ria where the Satok Suspension Bridge used to be.
“The new market will maintain the iconic ‘Pasar Satok’ name,” he said, adding that a tender for its construction had been called, and barring any unforeseen circumstances, work on the new market would start next year, and completed in two years’ time.”
Meanwhile, various activities have been lined up for the Satok Festival, which will be held at the Sarawak Tourism Complex (Old Court House). The theme of this year’s festival is ‘Batik – New Haven’.
The activities would include exhibitions, fashion shows based on batik by local and international designers, singing and dancing competitions, and talks and forums on business opportunities.
The organiser is the Satok Tourism Co-ordination Association in collaboration with the Ministry of Social Development and Urbanisation, Tourism Malaysia Sarawak, and Kraftangan Malaysia among others.

triplex November 18th, 2009, 09:44 AM vdamien: where r u from?(i was wondering because u spelled malaisia instead of malaysia) anyway, i believe malaysian cities outside of KL are just beginning to grow rapidly than b4 lately. but the rest of the world don't know that because they only know KL. being a city in east malaysia is even more challenging due to the distance and low population however, i think kuching have done quite a good job in development.
VDamien November 18th, 2009, 09:55 AM I'm living near Paris in France. Here nothing changes... We have only "La défense" an business quarter which grows but that's all... kiko November 19th, 2009, 02:47 AM No for taxi terminal in Central Business District
SECOND Planning and Resource Management Minister Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hassan yesterday told the State Legislative Assembly (DUN) that the establishment of a taxi terminal in the Central Business District will only worsen the problem of traffic congestion in the city.
“For the information of the Member for Padungan, the government will not establish any taxi terminal in the city centre as proposed. Instead, we will provide more drop off and pick up points at strategic locations in the city,” he said.
He said this when delivering his winding-up speech in response to the proposal made by Dominique Ng (PKR-Padungan) in his debate for the Supply (2010) Bill 2009 last week.
“What was being proposed by the Member for Padungan is not practical because it will only worsen the congestion problem in the city which we are trying to avoid,” said Tengah.
He said what is being practised in most countries is that taxis are stationed at taxi hubs provided at arrival and departure points, such as airports, wharfs, bus terminals and train stations.
“In the context of Kuching city our taxi terminal is at the Kuching International Airport (KIA). Apart from that an integrated terminal for taxis and buses to function as an interchange hub is being constructed at Mile 6 1/2, Penrissen Road,” he said.
kiko November 19th, 2009, 02:51 AM DBKU focuses on greening city
KUCHING: Greening Kuching City is an area of focus in the programme of Kuching North City Hall (DBKU).
Since 1990, a total of 66,990 trees were planted. Currently there are 46 public parks covering an area of 2,947.122 hectres administered by DBKU with yearly maintenance cost of RM2.4 million, DBKU Mayor Haji Mohamad Atei Abang Medaan disclosed this when officiating at the opening of the Urban Forestry Conference 2009 at Hilton hotel here, yesterday.
He said the state government was committed to the ‘green status’ everywhere, be it in the rural or urban areas.
“As a manifestation to this commitment, the state government has recently allocated more than 120 acres of prime land right at the centre of Kuching City North for our proposed Botanical Garden. We are confident of the successful establishment of this garden because other than financial and infrastructural resources, Sarawak has more than 2,500 species of tree and plant to facilitate the proposed garden,” he pointed out.
Atei also said that the Chief Minister Pehin Sri Haji Abdul Taib Mahmud emphasized that Kuching City be transformed into a modern city which is beautiful, green, healthy, economically and culturally vibrant with the people playing their role. Urban Forestry definitely is high on this agenda.
“Hence, DBKU as a local authority, has been entrusted by the state government to fulfill its vision to assure Kuching City becomes an attractive garden city with the mission to enhance the quality of life of our community through prudent delivery of services taking into consideration the need for green conservation. Through our vision and mission, the council has created efforts towards sustainable development – defined as the development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of the future generations to meet their own needs, in the city among others,” he said.
Through Local Agenda 21 activities, urban forestry is also part of the programme, he added.
Agenda 21 is an action oriented programme to be implemented by governments, United Nations agencies, local and regional administrators, organizations in the community and the public at large. Governments are required to promote dialogue among these players. Local government has been entrusted with a major role in providing information, education and mobilizing the general public to achieve sustainable development.
There were as many as 14 chapters of Agenda 21 directly related to area of management where local authorities play a primary role, and DBKU had embarked on the Agenda programme since 2006. Kuching City also participated in Healthy Cities projects since 1994 and was declared a Healthy City in 1995, he said.
“Among the programmes conducted are the recycling programme, continuous programme for environmental conservation, education and awareness programmes, pilot project for grease trap and river cleaning programme. All these are necessary alongside the urban forestry concept. For this, Kuching City North won sustainable city ASEAN environmental award 2006/2007 in Hanoi,” he pointed out.The Mayor added that Kuching was growing fast in population and consumption of land for urban development. Existing land reserve for urban development will be exhausted. A synergy with various agencies is a must, taking into consideration the concept of sustainable development in the planning and management of the city is all encompassing that need close collaboration of various agencies.
“This is necessary so that future generations will not be growing in a concrete jungle surrounded by wasteland but in gardens city with pleasant living environment thus making Kuching City in particular, stands amongst the most liveable cities,” he explained.
Earlier in his speech, Atei stressed on the need to protect the environment as “with world population at 6.1 billion and targeted to reach 8.2 billion in 2025, it is fairly certain that this growth could contribute to the deterioration of the environment.
“Of great concern is the greenhouse effect to our planet Earth,” he said, adding that cities and towns in Sarawak had sufficient green trees and shrubs to provide the need for sustainable environment.
“Sarawak has a credible forest management system duly recognized by the United Nations. As such, cities and urban areas are developed without damaging our greens. This spirit of sustainability is extended to urban development programmes as well. Alongside forest conservation everywhere in the state, city areas remain livable with sufficient greens already in place. In addition, more and more trees are planted each year,” said Atei who also wished the conference participants a fruitful discourse and exchange of experiences and ideas.
About 80 local and foreign speakers are taking part in the three-day conference themed “Lessons for Sustainable Development”.

kiko November 19th, 2009, 09:02 AM Prospects for MICE to grow in Sarawak
PETER SIBON & LH CHENG
KUCHING: Chief Minister Pehin Sri Haji Abdul Taib Mahmud said the global Meetings, Incentives, Conventions and Exhibitions (MICE) industry is one that the state should tap into with its hosts of natural resources. In relation to that, Kuching and Miri need to be more vigorous in their development approach. He said it is time for Kuching to reinvent itself into a modern and vibrant region through technology and development of a more productive service sector.
“Kuching has the capacity of becoming a high-tech centre with further development of Samajaya Free Industrial Zone.
“Kuching must attract more high-tech trigger projects to Samajaya. We have to ensure that the logistics are good enough for Samajaya to be part of the global supply chain,” Taib said in his winding-up speech at the State Legislative Assembly Sitting here yesterday.
For Miri and the northern region, it would develop itself into a Resort City with its white beaches, a nice marina as well as fabulous natural attractions within its reach, especially the Mulu Caves.
“At the same time, there is much scope for the proper development of the Kuala Baram Industrial Estate, with the development of the timber and palm oil industries and downstream activities.
“There is synergy for industries in the northern region, especially with markets in Brunei and Sabah,” he said.
“While Sarawak is still a small player (in the MICE industry), the Sarawak Convention Bureau (SBC) has successfully bid for 89 major conventions with an impressive strike rate of 72 percent.
“This year has been one of the toughest for industry sector but the sector remains strong.
“Sarawak can look forward to hosting 23 new conventions in 2010 that will generate 136,000 delegate days and RM93 million in direct delegate expenditure,” he said.
Taib said further development should come from keeping up with a clear strategy and implementation plan by building a comprehensive database on the MICE market so that the government can plan and strategise its business plan.
“MICE is a business that has the potential of having a huge spillover into other attractive parts of Sarawak,” he said.
Meanwhile, the Chief Minister said accelerating the growth of the rural areas in Sarawak has always been the priority of the Government.

KUCHING: A federal-funded botanical garden will be developed in the heart of the city in Petra Jaya here.
Kuching City North Commission Datuk Bandar Mohamad Atei Abang Medaan said the state government had set aside 51ha of prime state land for the project.
Initiated and funded by the National Landscape Department, the botanical garden will be the first of its kind in Sarawak, he said.
Its development is expected to start in the next one or two years.
Mohamad Atei said the state had over 2,500 species of trees and plants that would help to establish the proposed garden.
“There are a lot of other (tourist) attractions around the proposed project site,” he told reporters after opening a three-day urban forestry conference at Kuching Hilton, organised by the city commission and the Forest Research Institute Malaysia (FRIM).
FRIM deputy director-general of operations Dr Abdul Rahim Nik said the country had only a few botanical gardens, including the ones in Penang, Shah Alam and Putrajaya.
Such gardens, he said, would enhance green conservation efforts and educate the young generation on plants and trees.
Earlier, at the opening ceremony, Mohamad Atei said the state capital had sufficient greenery and shrubs to provide for a sustainable environment, adding that Kuching North had won the sustainable city Asean environmental award 2006-2007 in Hanoi.
Mohamad Atei said there were 46 public parks covering over 2,900ha in the city’s north area and that the commission spent RM2.4mil a year to maintain them.

kiko November 20th, 2009, 05:22 AM Eastar links Seoul and Kuching
KUCHING: KIC Limited Korea, the owner of Eastar Jet Co Ltd, yesterday signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the State Government to provide direct flights between Seoul and Kuching.
The scheduled chartered flights from Seoul to Kuching, and vice-versa, would be for the period from December 24 this year to January 27 next year. The number of tourists arriving from such flights during the said period would total 1,300.
The State Government was represented by Minister for Urban Development and Tourism, Dato Sri Michael Manyin, while KIC Limited Korea was represented by its Chairman, Lee Sang-Jik.
After the signing ceremony, Manyin yesterday told reporters at his office at Bangunan Masja in Petra Jaya that the chartered service would involved 11 flights .
The first flight using the B737-700 aircraft would be on December 24, followed by the second on December 27, then December 31, and thereafter on three-day intervals from January 3 until January 24, 2010.
Locals wishing to fly over and experience the cold weather in Korea could make their booking now, especially on the first flight to Seoul, Manyin said.
“As far as the tourism industry is concerned, we are fortunate to have Eastar Jet providing direct connectivity between Seoul and Kuching and vice-versa,” he added.
According to him, most Koreans, especially those with disposable income, would definitely want to go abroad now that it’s winter in Korea, and there was no better place than Sarawak to escape the cold.
“We also want them to enjoy our golf facilities because Korea has the highest number of golfers in the world who are also among the world’s richest” he said.
Manyin said that the State was keen to involve the Koreans in the hotel and other local industries because KIC already had insulation and mining interests. He added that negotiations on the chartered flight service had been on-going for the past few months and only became fruitful the day before.
http://www.easterntimes.com.my/images/THP_9044.JPG
Manyin (right) and Lee exchanging documents
“It’s kind of an early Christmas present for us, and for that, we are very thankful,” he added.
President of Eastar Jet Co Ltd, General Yang Hae-Gu, said that Eastar Jet was a low-cost carrier with fares cheaper than Malaysia Airlines. He said the airline had no other destination in Malaysia yet but had plans to make Miri one of them.
He said that bookings for flights on Eastar Jet could be made anytime through the Internet, tour operators, and travel agencies. The flight from Seoul to Kuching takes six hours and 20 minutes.
According to Manyin, Sarawak was a late comer to the Korean market.
“We only started recently after the appointment of a representative in Korea. After that, we did an aggressive campaign in the country, and along the way, we met with their baseball associations, golfers, schools, and the KIC Groups. “With the direct flights the number of South Koreans visiting Sarawak would increase, maybe, 10 folds. The golfers, for example, would find it cheaper to play here. The cost of playing for a month there is equivalent to playing for a year here. The waiting list (to play) is also longer over there,” Manyin said.
According to Yang, South Korea had a population of about 45 million, and about eight million of them were golfers.
Manyin said the chartered flights would be continued if the response was good

KUCHING, Nov 19 (Bernama) -- South Korea's new low-cost carrier Eastar Jet to start its inaugural chartered direct flight Seoul-Kuching-Seoul starting Dec 24 this year, Sarawak Tourism and Urban Development Minister Datuk Seri Michael Manyin said Thursday.
He said about 120 Korean tourists are expected to be on board for six hour and 20 minutes on the B737-700 aircraft scheduled to land at the Kuching International Airport here on Christmas eve.
"Sarawak is desirous of collaborating with Eastar Jet in developing tourism opportunities in the state," he told reporters here Thursday.
"We are hopeful to tap into the Korean market and attract more tourists to the state with the signing of the memorandum of understanding (MoU) on the chartered direct flights Seoul-Kuching-Seoul," he said.
Earlier, Manyin on behalf of the Sarawak state government and Eastar Jet's chairman Lee Sang-Jik signed the MoU at the minister's office here Thursday.
Eastar Jet, solely owned by KIC Group, made its maiden flight from Gimpo International Airport to Jeju International Airport on Jan 7 this year, and recorded the highest load factor from January to June this year in the domestic flights.
Manyin said the state would promote its golf courses here to attract golfers from South Korea to Sarawak.
"Golfing is an expensive sports in Korea. The cost of golfing for one month in Korea is equivalent to one year in Sarawak. We are targeting the eight million golfers in South Korea to play cheap golf in Kuching," he said.
Lee said Eastar Jet was planning to fly to the resort city of Miri in Sarawak.
"We are still in talks with the Sarawak state government," he said.
On the chartered direct flight Seoul-Kuching-Seoul, Lee said more than 1,300 Korean tourists have been booked in the 11 flights, scheduled between Dec 24 and January next year.
The flight frequency is one in three days.
Eastar Jet currently has a fleet of five B737s and will acquire an additional five by next year.

Manyin said the chartered flights would be continued if the response was good
Thanks for the news kiko...

Mechanical wonders: Kuching Sewerage Services Department staff
showing reporters the tunnel boring machine in one of the shafts.
KUCHING: Tunnel-building works for RM530mil Package 1 of the centralised sewerage system in Kuching are progressing on schedule.
State Sewerage Services Department director Lau Hieng Ung said tunnelling of a proposed 7.7km trunk sewer was 12% complete.
He said the department had two tunnel-boring machines which were carrying out tunnelling works from shafts at Jalan Crookshank and Jalan Abang Abdul Rahim.
“The shaft at Jalan Crookshank is 16m deep and 8m in diameter. We are drilling an average of three metres a day,” he told reporters at a project briefing.
The trunk sewer is a major component of the centralised sewerage system, which aims to reduce pollution of the city’s rivers by moving waste water from residential and commercial properties to a treatment plant before being discharged.
The package, covering the commercial and densely-populated areas of Kuching’s central business district, is scheduled to be completed in October 2012.

benz November 24th, 2009, 06:08 AM will Kuching be overcrowded with malls like the other states? They should just concentrate in building up a few large scale malls (maybe 4) instead of having 15 small scale malls. Having new malls is good but having too much is oversupplied. Probably they should focus more on hotel and office. Btw kiko, is pretty hard to look on how big the hotel would be as they are showing the side angle of the building.

nazrey November 25th, 2009, 01:06 PM Green Heights Mall lights up for Christmas
Wednesday, November 25th, 2009
KUCHING: Green Heights Mall has kickstarted its Christmas season with its annual Christmas Light-Up event on Saturday night. The light-up marks the beginning of the Christmas season.
Themed ‘For Peace this Christmas’, the mall wishes shoppers peace on earth and peace among neighbours.
A Christmas Bazaar was held on the ground floor and shoppers entertained to live Christmas songs by a three-piece band, Mix Sound.
The mall’s marketing and leasing executive Calvin Chua said: “This is the second year running that we hold this event. Apart from the various Christmas promotions by our retailers, we are taking this opportunity to promote a charitable cause.”
In conjunction with the celebration, the mall is also running a ‘Adopt a bird for charity’ programme where shoppers buy a homemade dove ornament from RM5 and hang it along with their peace message on the Green Heights Mall’s Peace Christmas Tree.
Profits from the sales of the bird will be donated to the Society of St Vincent De Paul Conference Kuching, a non-profit charitable organisation that depends mainly on donations from the public.
The funds collected will finance various activities for the poor and needy such as monthly food provisions, their children’s educational aid such as uniforms, shoes, writing materials, monthly bus fares and tuition fees.
The peace doves are available at The Agent, LG03 of the mall.
Purchasers are to write their peace message on the attached card and pass them to the cashier for hanging.
The mall is also holding an ‘Eco Xmas Ornaments Making Competition’ with its Go Green campaign encouraging contestants to show their creativity by conceiving Christmas ornaments out of recycled materials found around the house.
It can be a combination of anything from old light bulbs, magazines, aluminium cans, plastic bottles or old CDs.
The winners will receive cash and prizes worth RM300, RM200 and RM100 for first, second and third place respectively.
The entries will be displayed on a Christmas tree for shoppers to vote.
The top three most voted entries will the winners.
Forms are available at the Concierge. The deadline for entry is Dec 5.
The mall is also hosting a special Christmas promotion on its ground floor from Nov 22 to Dec 24.
C.P Tan November 25th, 2009, 01:56 PM Talib to work long hours in new post
By Irene C
KUCHING: Incoming Assistant Tourism Minister Datuk Talib Zulpilip said he will be working long hours to ‘settle down’ once his appointment takes effect on Dec 1.“I am not superman, I am an ordinary person who is willing to work hard,” he said of his incoming tasks as assistant minister.
On his future plans, Talib said he intended to carry on the good work of his predecessors.
He told reporters at a media appreciation dinner on Monday night that he would be looking at what his predecessors had done.
He said his target is to attract more tourists and also work closely with other tourism agencies.
Talib, who is also Sarawak Economic Development Corporation (SEDC) chairman, said his past experience will be useful to promote Sarawak as a tourism spot.
He pointed out that a very large part of SEDC is involved in the tourism industry.
“Any experience is good, but I’m not saying that I’m better than the next person,” he added.
Meanwhile, TopSpot Foodcourt at Taman Kereta will undergo a facelift early next year.
According to a press release, the upgrading work will include two new passenger lifts, one new service lift, prayer facilities for Muslim guests, a larger covered seating area, new floor tiling at the food court area, new lift lobbies and toilet facilities, including those for the disabled.
Once completed, the food court will be more customer-friendly, to further enhance its attractiveness to locals and tourists.
Taman Kereta is located at Bukit Mata Kucing along Jalan Padungan.
It is within the city’s central business district surrounded by shopping complexes, hotels, financial institutions and other private corporations.
Taman Kereta’s car park started operation in November 1995 and serves as a multi-storey public car park cum dining outlet.
TopSpot Foodcourt on the other hand, started business in April 1995.
Today, it is an icon that is frequently patronised by the local community as well as visitors from abroad.
Due to its convenient location and wide selection of fresh seafood, it is the preferred dining destination. Located at Level 6 of Taman Kereta, the open air food court not only serves an array of fresh seafood and authentic local delicacies, but also brings a unique dining experience, overlooking the Kuching City skyline. The food court houses 22 stall operators, all of whom have obtained their halal certificate.

yup retail development should be sustainable and not be overbuilt just for the sake of having the largest, the biggest, the tallest and so on where three years later they'll just be collecting dust.
C.P Tan November 25th, 2009, 10:10 PM will Kuching be overcrowded with malls like the other states? The average household income of Kuchingites is the second highest among all the major cities in Malaysia, which is only lower than PJ/ Damansara. Kuching also has the highest average occupancy rate of shopping centers (91.8%). But on the other hand, Kuching has the lowest shopping center supply per person (2.1sf per person). Source: http://www.plazamerdeka.com/docs/booklet_resize.pdf
In my opinion, Kuching won't face oversupplied problem in these few years. But I do agree that they should build a few large scale malls cos' Kuchingites do not like to shop at small scale shopping malls. (look what is happening to Green Heights Mall now, so sayang, the mall is beautiful and modern :ohno:)
Currently there are two hypermalls projects in Kuching: Isthmus Hypermall and Batu Lintang Hypermall. Batu Lintang Hypermall will launch first if not mistaken since land clearing is almost done. Isthmus Hypermall project will only be launched after hotel and marina are completed. Still have to wait for many years.:bash:

kiko November 26th, 2009, 10:46 AM Unit to tackle stray animals
KUCHING: A special unit will be set up next year to deal with problems associated with stray animals and the health hazards they cause to the city.
Housing Minister, Datuk Amar Abang Johari Tun Openg, told a press conference at his office here yesterday that the proposed unit would come under the newly-created Housing and Urban Development Ministry, which he would helm effective Dec 1 this year.
He said the move to set up the special unit would be part of efforts to sustain Kuching’s healthy city status, with the tourism industry in mind. The support and involvement of the private sector and non-governmental organisations (NGOs) were most welcomed.
He added that well-trained personnel such as veterinarians would play major roles in the proposed unit taking into consideration that stray animals could be hazardous to the health, and the tourism industry.
Discussions would be held with the relevant authorities and non-governmental agencies on his ministry’s plans and programmes soon, which would include keeping the city clean, healthy, and free of stray animals.
He, however, did not elaborate on the set-up of the unit and its core business, except to say, “I have an idea, and I will let you (press) know when the time comes.
“Our main concern is to keep stray animals like cats and dogs off the streets, especially from the vicinity of eateries because the good image of Kuching, especially in the eyes of tourists, has to be maintained.”
He said that such units were already in existence in Peninsular Malaysia.
Earlier, Johari launched the Sarawak Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals’ (SSPCA) counter top donation boxes. The boxes, which would be placed at strategic places in the city, is part of the measures to raise funds to sustain their programmes and services.
Johari assured the society that the government would continue to support them and their activities, and pledged a RM10,000 government grant as a show of its (government) commitment to assist them.
kiko November 26th, 2009, 10:57 AM Sarawak fast becoming preferred venue of events
2009/11/26
KUCHING: Sarawak is on the right track to become a player in the Meetings, Incentives, Conventions and Events (MICE) sector.
With more new hotels equipped with meeting facilities and the Borneo Convention Centre ready, the state is slowly attracting event organisers.
Sarawak Convention Bureau (SCB) chairman Datuk Seri Dr Muhd Leo Michael Toyad said the state was expecting more than 17,000 delegates to various national and international conferences next year.
"Next year, we will be hosting a different conference every fortnight," said Toyad after the SCB Gala Premiere yesterday.
There will be 22 national and international conventions all over Sarawak next year, including a tattoo convention, International Energy Exhibition, Global Business Forum, various medical conventions and oil and gas conventions.
During the premiere, SCB presented the "Meeting and Incentive Planner's Guide Volume II 2009- 2011" and a new promotion video entitled Recharge in a New World -- Changing Perspective to be used to market the state.
The 128-page guide is a comprehensive look into Sarawak. It includes information on the bureau's services to meeting planners, top incentive ideas and details on 213 convention venues and industry service providers.
The video is the second in a series first introduced last year.
The first video was a finalist in the recent European Incentive and Business Travel and Meetings 2009 Best Destination Marketing Campaign Award.
The video continues the story of a meeting between jaded Western business executives and local hosts from the Iban community.
The first video positions Sarawak as a new and vibrant business destination where the traditions are still upheld.
The sequel uses the same humorous approach and retains many of the characters from the first.
SCB chief executive officer Jill Henry hoped the new tools would entice MICE planners worldwide to decide on Sarawak as the venue of their next meeting.
"Our team is committed to providing the best possible advice and support to help them."

C.P Tan November 29th, 2009, 01:24 PM Carrefour to speed up growth
by Vasantha Ganesan
The world's second largest retailer, Carrefour, plans to double the number of stores in Malaysia to 40 by 2012.
This is in line with its strategy of positioning itself to be the top foreign hypermarket operator in the country, chief executive officer Guillaume de Colonges said.
De Colonges, who was appointed to head the Malaysian operations three months ago, said the retailer was committed towards growth here.
"We want to do in three years what we took 15 years to do before," de Colonges said, referring to the 20 stores it will operate in Malaysia by the year-end.
"If we can do more, we will," he said in an interview with Business Times.
The move is also in line with Carrefour's global target to position itself as the top or strong second in each market where it has a presence.
Although the earliest entrant in Malaysia in 1994, Carrefour is the smallest player in terms of stores and sales, trailing behind the UK's Tesco (30 outlets) and Hong Kong's Dairy Farm (more than 90 Giant hypermarkets and supermarkets).
One reason could be the four-year gap in its store openings in the country between 1999 and 2003.
De Colonges, who declined to disclose the investment amount, said the retailer will either build its own store or lease the premises.
He also said that Carrefour would like a wider presence in the country, including in Sabah and Sarawak.
Its previous managing director, Shafie Shamsuddin, had said in May 2005 that it could spend RM1.6 billion to open 16 additional hypermarkets by 2012. At that time, it had 14.
Carrefour is scheduled to open its 20th store next month.
The retailer employs some 4,000 workers and is likely to hire up to 8,000 with new store openings.
De Colonges said that an additional four stores are slated to open next year.

kiko November 30th, 2009, 04:48 AM Rewards for Sarawak tour operators
KUCHING: The Sarawak Tourism Board will reward tour operators which bring in big groups of tourists to the state from next year.
State Tourism and Urban Development Minister Datuk Michael Manyin said that operators which brought in groups of at least 50 people in a single arrival would be entitled incentives of their choice from the board.
“The incentives will be given in kind, such as the provision of traditional airport/port welcomes, cultural performances, welcome gifts or free entrance to tourism attractions, whichever the operators prefer.
“The incentive is open to all markets,” he said here recently.
Another reward would be a cash incentive for travel agents or tour operators which achieved a target of arrivals into Sarawak, Manyin said.
He said the board would set specific targets after consulting with the industry members.
This incentive, he said, would be offered to all markets based on their acceptance.
Manyin said the Sarawak Convention Bureau would provide five scholarships to associations, corporate bodies and government organisations as a reward for bringing conferences to Sarawak.
“This programme is designed to train and develop convention hosts, thereby encouraging our own people to put Sarawak and themselves on the world stage,” he said.
He said the Land of the Hornbills recorded 2.34 million visitors in the first nine months of this year.
Of the number, 1.5 million were foreign tourists while more than 837,000 were from the peninsula and Sabah.
The number of arrivals from Singapore jumped by nearly 7,100 or 25.7% while arrivals from Eastern Europe soared by 2,263 or 36.2%, he added.

kiko December 1st, 2009, 09:22 AM Sarawak To Further Collaborate With Sabah On Tourism
KUCHING, Dec 1 (Bernama) -- The new Sarawak Tourism and Heritage Ministry wants to further collaborate with its Sabah counterparts to focus mainly on regional tourism, Deputy Chief Minister Tan Sri Dr George Chan said Tuesday.
He said this included tapping the Singaporean, Taiwanese and Chinese markets.
Dr Chan, who took over the portfolio effective today, following a recent state cabinet reshuffle, said Sarawak wanted to emulate the success of the Sabah tourism authorities and industry players in its tourism sector.
"So, I am very excited about my new job and hope I can tell you (press) a bit more (on future plans) once I have met up and obtained briefings (from local tourism stakeholders) to get some ideas," he said.
He was speaking to reporters after launching the Sarawak gourmet recipe book, 'Oo...ha, Favourites of Sarawak', produced by the Sarawak Tourism Federation (STF), in collaboration with album singer Vinc Huong here.
He said his ministry would look at ways to increase its presence, especially in Singapore, Taiwan and China, with the setting up of a comprehensive portal tourism database of the state.
Earlier, STF president Wee Hong Seng said it was important for the industry to review its strengths and weaknesses after experiencing the blunt impact of the global economic reccession, by coming up with more exciting tourism initiatives and products.
On the RM25 cook book, he said, it was promoted throughout the Peninsular and Singapore, with proceeds from the sale of the book to be given to charity causes, including the National Cancer Society Malaysia, Sarawak branch's hospice building fund.

C.P Tan December 2nd, 2009, 08:46 AM Plaza Merdeka’s modern concept set to attract visitors
By Adrian Lim
KUCHING: Rakyat Elite Sdn Bhd, (Rakyat Elite) the developer of Plaza Merdeka, a new commercial complex located at the heart of the city centre here introduced a combination of modern and classical concepts for synergy to create a vibrant appearance to attract people to the mall. Its executive director Ng Yaw Hua was optimistic that the idea will be favoured by citizens and tourists who visit Kuching to spend their leisure time and holidays by making a visit to the mall.
“The concept of Plaza Merdeka is different from others in which we incorporate new and classical ideas to develop the project.
“Through the new ideas that we use, we hope to attract more customers to come to the mall besides assisting local businesses in the surrounding area to grow and prosper.
“We are targeting the middle upper and middle lower class customers to shop and enjoy their leisure time at the mall,” he told reporters yesterday before a site visit to the project.
Ng said the mall which is located at the vicinity of various tourist attractions and historical sites such as Sarawak Museum, the Old Court House, India Street and Gambier Street will be able to attract tourists and boost businesses.
He also said businesses surroundings will not be affected by the opening of the mall as Rakyat Elite will be co-operating with traders around the city centre to organise promotional activities during the festive season.
He added that the company constantly engages in discussions with the businesses nearby especially with traders in India Street to work together and collaborate with them to create a win-win situation.
Currently, Ng said more that 20 per cent of the retail spaces at the commercial complex have been sold where in total, there are more than 380 units at the mall.
He revealed that each unit was pegged at an average of between RM1,200 per square feet (psf) and RM1,300 psf before the height of the credit crisis adding that the price has since increase by 15 per cent thereafter.
He pointed out the commercial centre will have Parkson Holdings Bhd (Parkson) as its main tenant which has committed to set up their flagship store there.
“In fact, the anchor tenant of Plaza Merdeka is Parkson which occupies four floors or 135,000 sq ft of the retail space at the mall and has signed a 15-year lease agreement with the company.
“Presently, the company is also in negotiations with five other supermarkets from Sarawak and Peninsular Malaysia to enable them to occupy the other retail spaces,” Ng said.
Besides that, he said the 13-storey commercial complex will also include a 290 room boutique hotel which will be named as 360 Waterfront when the complex is completed.
Plaza Merdeka, with a total nett lettable area of 350,000 sq ft on a 3.8 acres of land is constructed along Jalan Tun Abang Haji Openg, opposite the main post office’s building.
The commercial complex with a development value of RM220 million is expected to be completed by March 2012 and managed by Plaza Merdeka Management Sdn Bhd.
The contractor of the project is Bina Puri Construction Sdn Bhd (Bina Puri), which is a renowned contractor for performing sub-structure piling works where previously, the company is also one of the contractor for performing the piling work for the Petronas Twin Towers in Kuala Lumpur.
Plaza Merdeka has eight storeys of hotel rooms with six storeys of retail shoplots and three levels of basement.
One level of retail shoplots is located at the basement level with two others for parking lots. The two levels for parking lots has the capacity to accommodate 800 units of vehicles.
Further, Ng stressed that the company has spent additional RM6 million for green technology where the air-conditioning system for the building can reduce 30 per cent of the cost of electricity.
He added that the company also forked out another RM20 million to ensure that the piling of the site is done using the safest method without causing damages to the structures of other surrounding buildings.
Rakyat Elite has also engaged with professional consultants and installed monitoring devices at surrounding buildings to detect any vibrations and damages caused by the piling work but so far the results returned negative.
Ng was confident that the project can be completed within the timeframe as specified.
Meanwhile, Bina Puri senior project coordinator Sam Law said the company has performed demolition work of existing abandoned building and ongoing bored pile installation works are being carried out.
“We have demolished the ground floor of the abandoned building while bored pile installation for the building is still in progress.
“Normally, the construction for the foundation of a building takes a lengthy amount of time. The three levels basement should be completed by November next year.
“Basically, most of the works are currently being carried out below the ground as we need to strengthen the foundation of the building.
“Once it is done, it will be very fast to build up the structure above ground for the building.
“So far, eight per cent of the project has been completed,” he said.
Law also said people will be able to witness some structures of the building appeared above the ground some time between July and August next year.
He added that between now and November, the company will be performing bored piling installation, demolishing existing wall, installing ground anchor wall to hold the wall area besides excavating tunnels and excess ramp for the sewerage treatment plant area.
In addition, Bina Puri will also construct a sewerage treatment plant (STP) for the commercial complex that will eventually connect it to the Kuching Central Severage System.
Among those present for the site visit were Plaza Merdeka Holdings Sdn Bhd managing director Steve Ng, Rakyat Elite sales and leasing director Aw Tai Hui and Rakyat Elite sales and leasing executives Andrew Chong and Delwin Chang.

KUCHING: The proposed pedestrian bridge linking the State Legislative Assembly (DUN) complex to the Kuching Waterfront across the Sarawak River will enhance Kuching as a prime tourist destination, says the Managing Director of Plaza Merdeka Holdings Sdn Bhd, Steve Ng.
He said the bridge, designed by a renowned Malaysian architect, Hijas Kasturi, who also designed the new DUN complex, would allow visitors to savour the real beauty of the city. It would also link the city’s major historical sites, including the proposed Plaza Merdeka, which would be completed in 2012.
“I understand that the project (bridge) is still at the proposal stage,” he told the media yesterday.
On another matter, Ng dismissed the claims of State Assemblyman for Padungan Dominique Ng that there was no progress on the Plaza Merdeka project.
“The project is ahead of schedule with 130 bore piles completed to date. The ground conditions are good and we have not encountered any major problems. The workers are working late into the night, and we are confident of meeting the scheduled opening date in March 2012,” he said.
Plaza Merdeka, he added, had appointed an internationally acclaimed construction company, Binapuri Construction Bhd (the same company which had built the DUN Complex) as the project main contractor.
“We are confident that with their endorsement and strong organisation, we will complete the project in March 2012. We will continue to work hard to ensure a trouble-free construction process,” said Ng.
Besides the shopping complex, Plaza Merdeka will also have a five-star hotel with three-star prices, which would be operational by the third quarter of 2012.

KUCHING, Dec 6 (Bernama) -- The Sarawak Housing and Urban Development Ministry hope to overcome traffic congestion in the state's major towns within the next four years.
Its minister Datuk Abang Johari Tun Openg said based on feedback from the public, the main towns facing traffic congestion were Kuching and Miri.
"We will focus on overcoming such problems and finding long term solutions in main towns," he told reporters after opening a seminar jointly organised by the Women's Affairs Bureau of the Sarawak United National Youth Organisation (Saberkas) and Women's Social Bureau of the Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB) Sarawak party here today.
Without going into actual details, Abang Johari said all input, feedback, views and ideas from the Facebook would be taken into consideration.
The Facebook is now an important mechanism to receive feedback from the people with problems.

kiko December 11th, 2009, 05:57 AM Tokuyama’s RM12.5b will benefit Sarawak, says Taib
By Peter Sibon
KUCHING: Chief Minister Pehin Sri Haji Abdul Taib Mahmud says Tokuyama Corporation’s potential investment worth RM12.5 billion over the next 15 years will definitely bring much benefit to Sarawak.
“We welcome them. They have made up their mind to go all out to invest in Sarawak. That’s good,” Taib told the media after launching GABEM Sarawak at Borneo Convention Centre Kuching, yesterday.
He was commenting on news report that a Japanese silicon maker would invest RM12.5 billion over a period of time to produce solar cell components at the Samalaju Industrial Park near Bintulu.
Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin made the statement last Tuesday, while leading a Malaysian delegation to Japan from December 7 to 10.
"It's RM5.5 billion for the first 10 years and an additional RM7 billion for another 10 to 15 years," Muhyiddin said after meeting the company's top officials in Japan.
Muhyiddin said Tokuyama's investments had been approved in 2008, and the Sarawak Government had identified a location for the project.
The plant, which will produce polycrystalline silicon for solar cells, is expected to commence operations in 2011.

Hello everyone... Im a new member from Kuching too.. Its really nice seeing everyone so keen in sharing what Kuching have to others.. Well... I also agree that Kuching is great!! After been to Beijing, Hongkong, Singapore and others... I still like Kuching!! I loves its people, greener leaves and grasses, landscapes and more...
Well Kuching might not have Wide roads or MRT like KL and JB.. Without huge population , we still can afford many new malls, large airports (larger than almost all other airports in west M'sia except KLIA), and more!! Clean air, less traffic jam and eveything u want.. Perhaps... Dats my point of view..
I think im writting an essay... Btw.. Sarawak has its own identity.. Like our huge malls are all conquered by local players like Boulevard hypermarket, Ta Kiong Hypermarket, Star Cineplex (Also got branch in West M'sia), and which they all did as well as so called Jusco, Giant and so on.. Maybe our development heres a bit slow... But u should know that our country's income depend a lot from Sarawak okay... Weve got petroleum, Black Pepper(Main Exporter to the whole world), Many many Timbers and West M'sia is going to depend on our Bakun dam(World 2nd largest Dam) To provide them electricity..
Once again... I would like to say to friends who were not Kuchingnites that if u like to see peoples of different cultures, buildings of different cultural designs or wadever special... Just try ask us... im sure many kuching friends here must be ver keen to share.. haha
**To other Kuching friends.. Especially those good in photo taking.. Can PLEASE upload some pictures of the Tecoma trees blooming around Kuching just like the Sakura tree blooming in Japan... I think its worth to share..
Haha thanks!!
Hope to see more Interesting news about our city... our slow but still ongoing Metropolitan...

C.P Tan December 12th, 2009, 10:19 AM Gasoline opens at tHe Spring
By Ghaz Ghazali
KUCHING: Gasoline Cafe’s (Gasoline) soft launching of its eighth outlet at tHe Spring shopping mall yesterday received tremendous response from the public who came to try out its offerings. Its founder Gavin Leong said that the restaurant practises what is called a concept-theme strategy.
“Although the menu is the same, each of our outlets has different setup and designs for its decor. For our Kuching branch, which is the first in East Malaysia, we used a ‘castle’ concept decor with our own in-house comic designs for the tables and walls, as well as the ‘drawbridge’ at the restaurant’s entrance.
“For the indoor dining area, we have regular tables and chairs, alongside curtained booths for guests to dine in more casually on the carpeted floor. We also have an outdoor dining area on the balcony.”
Located at the second level of the mall, next to MBO Cineplex, the concept restaurant serves mix-and-match Asian and Western food and beverage. All items on its menu are halal-certified and price per person’s servings start from RM10 onwards.
Additionally, Leong announced that Gasoline is having a special promotion in conjunction with the holiday season.
“Gasoline will be having its Christmas and New Year Set promotion, which include soup, main course and drinks at RM20++. The promotion will start this coming December 20 to January 1 next year.”
“Following this soft launching, we also plan for a grand opening for Gasoline. We can’t confirm the date yet, but it’s going to be soon. For the grand opening, we plan to give away free gifts to customers,” he added.
Gasoline opens daily from 10 am to 1 am on weekdays, with extended closing time to 2 am on weekends and during public holidays. For details, log on to www.gasoline.com.my.

“This will be the first such facilities to be built in this (Satok) constituency as part of the urban development programme to create a green area for this neighbourhood,” said Housing and Urban Development Minister Datuk Amar Abang Johari Tun Openg during the earth breaking ceremony at Jalan Muhibbah here yesterday.

p/s: I am proud of to be Kuchingite as almost every corner of Kuching is very beautiful. Kuching is the cleanest city in Malaysia and was voted as one of the world's healthiest cities, recognised and awarded by both United Nations (UN) and World Health Organisation (WHO) and by the Alliance for Healthy Cities (AFHC) in Suzhou, China. It is also one of the most beautiful (definitely in top 3 :nocrook:) and well developed cities in Malaysia. Let's make Kuching a better place to live by not littering on the street.

C.P Tan December 14th, 2009, 08:20 AM RM43.8 mln expected from six conferences next year
http://www.theborneopost.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/12/newst00057.jpg
WELL DONE: Assistant Minister of Tourism Datuk Talib Zulpilip (right) presents an award to a successful conference bidder. Toyad is at centre.
KUCHING: The state is set to make RM43.8 million from six major conferences next year.
The delegates are expected to bring in 21,970 delegates, which translate to a total of 69,190 room nights.
These confirmed conferences are the 19th Malaysian Urological Conference, World Organisation of National Colleges, Toastmaster District 51 2010 Lutong Convention, Napolean Hill International Convention (NHIC) 2010, FEIIC World Engineering Conference 2010 and Prudential Insurance Mid Year Conference.
Sarawak Convention Bureau (SCB) chairman, Dato Sri Muhammad Leo Michael Toyad, believes that these conferences and ‘Anak Sarawak Appreciation Awards’ would motivate more Sarawakians to bid for new conventions.
“With the recognition of ‘Anak Sarawak Appreciation Awards’ annually, I hope that more Sarawakians would bid for new conventions to raise our profile as an emerging international meeting destination.
“Sarawak has the potential and it was awarded ‘The Best Destination Marketing Award’ having beaten finalists Australia and Canada in Barcelona on Dec 2,” he said at the ‘Anak Sarawak Appreciation Awards 2009’ themed ‘Phantom of the Opera’ at a leading hotel here on Friday night.
Toyad was encouraged last night by the more than 100 per cent increase in the number of award recipients, from last year’s 19 to 45 new honorary convention ambassadors.
Of the 45, 31 were from outside Sarawak.
“Sarawak is ready to take on the world with its brand new state-of-the-art convention centre and new meeting hotels, supported by a fantastic range of great eco-tourism products,” he said.
Organised by the SCB, the ‘Anak Sarawak Appreciation Awards’ recognise those who have successfully bid for new national and international conventions.
It acknowledges their commitment and dedication to the growth of the state’s meetings, incentives, conferences and conventions (MICE) industry.
In a press release, SCB chief executive officer, Jill Henry, said that with the recent release of two new award-winning destination marketing tools, the ‘Meeting and Incentive Planner’s Guide Volume II’ and the ‘Meet in Sarawak Video’ (Recharge in the New World II — Changing Perspectives), clients can be assured that the bureau’s team will give the best possible advice and support to help them every step of the way.
Recipients of the ‘Anak Sarawak Appreciation Awards 2009’ include Michael Tinggi Katherine Ting, Datuk Prof Abang Abdullah Abang Ali, Rajamohan Ganesan, Rajamohan Ganesan, Bibi Aminah Abdul Ghani, Dr Goh Chai Lee, Dr Poline Bala, Rosita Mohamed Othman, Dr Rajinder Singh, Edric Ong, Benedict Ong Yew Keng, Nordin Abdullah, Dato Prof Dr Mustaffa, Dipendra Harshad Rai, Dennis Ong, William Ng, Perpetua Phang, Dr Philip Jeremiah, Sivaram Venkatarmegowda, Christina Chia and Dr Ganakumaran Subramaniam.
