^^Gosh! Jalan Simpang Tiga has already been crammed with The Spring, government complexes, new boutique hotel, Swinburne university, Kenyalang Park residents and so much more!
Where is the location of new boutique hotel? I don't have any idea.

The serviced residence is part of a mixed development project which will be developed and owned by Kenbest Sdn Bhd, a leading property developer experienced in retail and residential real estate development in East Malaysia. The building will also feature 200,000 square feet of retail area, the perfect complement to the savvy, independent and vibrant demographic of Citadines’ customers.
That's mean ST3 Shopping Center will have a NLA of 200,000 sq feet. Wow, much larger than what I have expected, I thought it is smaller than Hills Shopping Mall.

Help to decentralise city devt, private sector urged
By Jacob Achoi

KUCHING: Second Minister of Planning and Resource Management Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hassan yesterday called for active private sector participation in the development of the city.He said it is the policy of the government to decentralise city development, which is where the private sector can play a more dominant role.

Tengah pointed out that it was the intention of the government to extend the development of the city right up to Batu Kawah, Matang and Semariang to ease congestion in the city proper.

The decentralisation process of developing the city also included the Kuching Isthmus area, he added.

“I believe that the private sector can play a vital role in our policy of decentralisation in developing our city,” Tengah told a press conference.

Earlier he officiated at the launch of ST3 project and the signing ceremony between Kenbest Sdn Bhd and The Ascott Group Limited on serviced residence management contract, held at Hilton Hotel here.

Tengah said he was pleased with the participation of the private sector, saying they complemented the effort of the government.

Tengah who is also Public Utilities Minister said he was happy with Kenbest for accepting the challenge to develop a large scale, integrated and high-end property.

According to him, ST3 is set to be a modern and stylish commercial-residence complex capable of providing new avenue for existing businesses including those in the surrounding area of Simpang Tiga.

He pointed out that Kenbest’s synergy with The Ascott Group Limited was a perfect example of the capabilities of Sarawak-based property development companies to work with world-class multinational companies. According to him, The Ascott Limited is no stranger to the local hospitality industry, having had links with Sommerset Gateway Kuching.

Meanwhile, yesterday’s event also saw presentation of donation to three charitable organisations.

The recipients were Laila Taib Cancer Charitable Trust, which received RM50,000, Sarawak Association for Welfare of Intellectual Disabled Children (RM10,000) and Sarawak Orphanage Welfare Board (Lembaga Kebajikan Anak-Anak Yatim Sarawak) RM10,000.

Among those present were Kuching South City Council Mayor James Chan, The Ascott Limited chief corporate officer Tony Soh and Kenbest managing director Stephen Long.

Electricity bill?? OMG, Its the government building la for goodness sake... And, it is not neccesaryly from dusk to dawn. 6-12 is enough already. If KLCC Can lightened up brightly every night, why DUN can't DUN Sarawak can't do the same? Why they can lightened up Kuching waterfront but not the DUN? 300 Million ringgit of People money have been invested to build the thing, we can't enjoy the building by going in the building, but at least share the magnifecent view of the building at night? I m sure that visitor and tourist will feel the same thing. So, c.p Tan, before you want to say something, you might have to think about what you are about to say first. Oh ya, btw, why astana can be lightened up brightly and as well as fort margareta?

C.P Tan
December 17th, 2009, 07:37 PM
Don't compare Kuching with KL. LOL, Astana and Fort Margherita (not margareta) are much smaller than DUN, brother. If you really want them to light up the building, why you don't write a letter to them? I am not going to answer your question regarding this matter anymore.

Ascott Signs First Citadines in Malaysia

Ascott has signed its first Citadines serviced residence in Malaysia – Citadines Kuching Uplands. With this new property and other properties due to open in Malaysia, Ascott’s operating apartments in the country will more than double from the current 455 units to a total of 1,168 units across nine properties by 2013. The company has recently clinched a management contract for its second Ascott branded serviced residence in Kuala Lumpur, while its third Somerset property in Malaysia will open next year.

Ascott introduced the Citadines brand to Asia Pacific in 2006 with the opening of Citadines Shanghai Jinqiao. Since then, Ascott has opened 10 more Citadines in the region.

Mr Alfred Ong, Managing Director for Southeast Asia and Australia, said, “We see strong growth potential in Malaysia. The country’s economic growth is expected to increase from 3.5% in 2010 to 5.3% in 2014. Foreign Direct Investment is also expected to grow from US$5.8 billion in 2010 to US$8.8 billion in 2014.1 We currently have Ascott and Somerset properties in Malaysia and we see tremendous potential in bringing the vibrant Citadines concept to the country. The presence of our three brands – Ascott, Somerset and Citadines – will enable us to cater to a wider range of customers. We intend to grow our Citadines brand in Malaysia and we are looking for opportunities to bring it to Kuala Lumpur. We will also look at other potential areas for growth such as Penang, Petaling Jaya and the Iskandar region.”

Citadines Kuching Uplands is scheduled for completion by the first half of 2012. It has a prime location in the Jalan Simpang Tiga area which is set to be a hub for education and local federal government administration offices. Jalan Simpang Tiga is also a fast developing district with a wealth of commercial and retail operations as well as medical facilities. The property is a 10-minute drive from the Samajaya Free Industrial Zone with many multinational and local companies. One of the largest shopping malls in East Malaysia, The Spring Shopping Centre, is just across the road from the serviced residence and the Borneo Convention Centre is also in the vicinity.

With Citadines Kuching Uplands, Ascott will be able to tap on the city’s burgeoning MICE industry, project groups from the nearby companies and government offices as well as student groups and visiting professors from the universities located around the property.

Citadines Kuching Uplands will offer 215 apartment units, ranging from studios to one and two-bedroom units. Its facilities include a restaurant, sauna, swimming pool and gymnasium. The serviced residence is part of a mixed development project which will be developed and owned by Kenbest Sdn Bhd, a leading property developer experienced in retail and residential real estate development in East Malaysia. The building will also feature 200,000 square feet of retail area.

Tree-lined roads: Melaka govt may emulate Kuching
By Samuel Aubrey

KUCHING: The Melaka government has expressed great appreciation for the large trees that line many of the roads in the city.Melaka local government and environment committee chairman Datuk Latiff Tamby Chik said the Melaka government is now thinking about emulating Kuching to plant trees along their roads for better landscaping.

In Kuching to lead a 62-member delegation on a familiarisation visit to the state, Latiff said he personally found the large trees along the roads in Kuching pleasant to the eyes and having a cooling effect on motorists.

If the same is done in Melaka, he said, it would beautify the state especially the historical city of Melaka.

“From the airport to the city centre in Kuching, I am impressed by the many big trees lining the roads here. These trees are soothing sight for tired eyes, and also help to cool down the temperature on the road.

“We are mulling on emulating this in order to boost tourism, especially for the city of Melaka, which is now a (Unesco) World Heritage Site,” he said.

Latiff, who is also Telok Mas assemblyman, said this during a welcoming dinner hosted by the Kuching South City Council (MBKS) for the visiting Melaka delegation on Thursday.

Also present at the dinner was Sarawak Timber Industry Development Corporation (STIDC) deputy general manager Hashim Bojet, who represented Sarawak forest director and STIDC general manager Datu Len Talif Saleh.

According to Latiff, the Melaka government has learnt many things from Sarawak during the duration of their four-day visit, beginning on Tuesday.

Another big lesson they can learn from Sarawak, he said, is river management.

“The Sungai Sarawak is wide, free flowing and clean. This is the result of good water management. We in Melaka can learn from Sarawak on how to manage our rivers, especially in making our rivers beautiful,” he said.

Meanwhile, Hashim who also spoke, briefed the visitors on STIDC’s roles and functions.

He also took the opportunity to promote the Tanjung Manis halal hub.

Wet Xmas parade in Kuching

KUCHING: Christmas carols filled the air as thousands of Christians joined a street parade in the rain during an early Christmas celebration here.

They walked 4km from the Jubilee Ground to spread the message of peace on Saturday night.

Carrying umbrellas and wearing rain coats, some 4,000 members of the Methodist, Catholic and Anglican churches held candles as they sang traditional hymns, like Silent Night, Joy to the World and We wish you a Merry Christmas.

Some were dressed as angels who proclaimed the birth of Jesus Christ 2,000 years ago while others were attired in shepherd clothing to spread the good news.

Christmas spirit: Members of the Boys’ Brigade marching during the street parade in Kuching on Saturday.

Floats added colour to the procession, which attracted many, including tourists, along the way.

The event was made merrier by the musical performances from the Boys and Girls Brigades’ brass bands. Specially-made balloons, bearing Christmas messages, were handed out as gifts to the public.

The annual parade is one of several events organised by the churches to celebrate Christmas.

Other activities include carolling in shopping malls and leading hotels. Similar annual parades are also being held in Sibu and other towns.

Aquatics hub to be built in Kuching to train talent

WORLD-class facilities will be set up in Sarawak as a hub of excellence for aquatics in Malaysia.
This comes in the wake of outstanding performances by the swimmers and divers in the Laos SEA Games.

The centre in Kuching is expected to be ready next year and the Government hopes that more good swimmers and divers will emerge to win honours for the country.

In Vientiane, aquatics did the country proud by winning a total of 15 gold medals, with swimming delivering nine and diving six.

Youth and Sports Minister Datuk Ahmad Shabery Cheek said yesterday that Sarawak had groomed many world-class athletes.

Those in the current national aquatics squad from Sarawak are swimmer Daniel Bego and divers Bryan Nickson Lomas, Pandalela Rinong and Traisy Vivien.

“We have identified the place in Kuching and work will be carried out immediately to build the centre,” Shabery said after a press conference to review the Malaysian contingent’s performances in the Games.

“We will make sure that the best facilities are provided to ensure that there is continuity in producing more world-class athletes.

“It seems that Sarawak has a natural talent in diving and swimming.”

And in jest, he added: “Maybe they get their basic training in Sungai Rejang (the longest river in Malaysia).”

On a serious note, Shabery took his hats off to the aquatics team.

“Daniel is the pride of the nation. He emerged as the top male medal winner for the country in the Games with a sensational five-gold haul. (Siow) Yi Ting also did very well,” he said.

Shabery said that the government would also continue to support sports that did well in the Games.

Last week, he announced the government’s efforts to set up a multi-million fund for football development following the success of the national Under-23 team.

Kuching Isthmus is already part of City Centre... soon will be the extension of Kuching City Centre proper. So no point of decentralization here. They should spread it even more... I'd like to propose development near to Borneo Highlands. So that we won't have to go to Sabah to see Kundasang or Pahang to see Cameron/Genting/Bukit Tinggi/Bukit Fraser n stuff. 7 shophouses up in smoke
By Gary Adit

It took 47 firemen from five stations four hours to contain Gambier Street blaze; no lives lost

KUCHING: A section of the city’s historical heritage went up in smoke last night when a massive fire destroyed seven pre-war shophouses along Gambier Street.Miraculously, there were no reports of any injury in the 8.30pm incident, which continued on until midnight.

Eyewitnesses said the fire started from two units belonging to a fabric shop, which then rapidly spread to adjacent lots to its left and right.

Among the businesses razed in the blaze were a discount store, supermarket and a sundry goods store.

A total of 47 firefighters from five stations – Padungan, Tabuan Jaya, Petra Jaya, Batu Lintang and Siburan – responded to the scene in six engines after a distress call was received at 8.47pm.

The team spent the next three hours battling the blaze as flames consumed one shop after another with no sign of abating.

A massive crowd gathered at the scene of the fire, and many were heard groaning at the seemingly low water pressure which initially hampered efforts to fight the blaze.

One of them, local lawyer Lim Lian Kee, who owns one of the affected shops, said the fire could have been controlled earlier had the initial water pressure been sufficient.

However, he conceded that firemen were doing their best and said he was in awe at how they risked their lives in the line of duty.

Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Dr George Chan arrived at Gambier Street not long after receiving word of the fire and got up close to get a first hand view of the incident.

He was later briefed by Fire Department officials regarding the operation and even ended up getting soaked when a fire hose slipped out of a fireman’s grasp and doused the deputy chief minister from head to toe.

Nonetheless, Dr Chan praised the firemen for risking their lives in their attempt to put out the fire, saying that such a job was never easy.

He pointed out that the non-existent fire breaks between the shoplots caused the fire to spread at an alarming speed.

“These very old shops were built without any fire breaks in between, and I was told that was one of the reasons the flames spread so quickly from one shop to another,” he said.

He added that the state government would be looking to see how to assist the shop owners with rebuilding.

Meanwhile, Batu Lintang station chief Azhar Mohamad, who spoke to the media on behalf of state Fire Department deputy director of operations Fahtulmuin Abdul Salam, said the cause of the incident was not known, but that fire investigators would be arriving in the morning to begin the probe.

He added that no injuries were reported, although several of his men were affected by the thick smoke in the course of battling the blaze.

Total loss in the incident, though still unascertained, is believed to be massive because despite its aging appearance, Gambier Street is still a business haven.

Last night’s incident was the second time that fire has destroyed the historical shop houses along Gambier Street, with four lots going up in smoke last year.

Your website proves BIGGER differences!! The population in Kuching is 40,000 more than KK. And the number of highrise buildings, plus the area size of our city(1863km2), six times the size of theirs(351km2)!! When the other buildings here completed... WOW!! cant wait for that!

My West M'sia Friends came to Kuching. Brought them around last night. They were Shocked!! They didnt expect the ppl here can be so crowded and our city livelier then wad they expect. Even our MBO cinema hall is bigger than the one in Sunway Pyramid. Kuching have came back to Life!! YEAH!!

One of the reasons for the lower heights of highrises in KK is that KKIA is built near the city center. So most of the buildings are less than 20 storeys. It's true that Kuching is more urbanized than KK but retail market in KK is bigger than Kuching. Shopping malls in KK are big especially 1 Borneo and Suria Sabah. KK will soon have 3rd GSC at Suria Sabah. There are also more international brands in KK for example Guess, Zara, Wagamama, Burger King, Fish and Co, Deli France..KK is a wonderful city with crystal-blue sea and many beautiful islands just a stone throw away from the city. I think we shouldn't compare Kuching with KK. Each has its own unique characteristics.

borneo highland even better than other higlands in sabah or pahang..

To you, Better in what sense? I think apart from it cooler climate, Borneo Highlands is rich in culture, whereby we can see Bidayuh longhouses, titi buluh n stuff... but, it's hardly being advertised or promoted. I'd like to see more tourists flocking in to Borneo Highlands.. so that retail business will grow more there... native people there will be more involved in tourism industry.. how good is that? Then Kuching can become no.1 tourist destination in Borneo again. Currently we're losing a lot to Sabah in terms of tourism industry.

Yup. To me, KK is kinda pleasant city to go to. Much better than some S'jung cities like Ipoh or even JB. In terms of urban size, Kuching is bigger than KK. I think KK has bigger retail market mostly due to its booming tourism industry. If they depend on domestic economy alone, I think it won't be as developed as now. The only problem with Sabah cities, like KK.. are the pilaks. Too many of them there.

Its nice that both cities are growing and has its uniqueness. It would also be nice if Miri and Sibu can catch up to the development between KK and Kuching, also Pontianak (Indonesia). Then there are more cities in Borneo to be visited and can just drive east-west or north-south and don't need to fly all the way to KL/SG/HK for a metropolitan holiday isn't it?

MAGNIFICENT DISPLAY: Fireworks light up the sky during the Christmas countdown.

KUCHING: The rain on Thursday night did not stop a large crowd from joining the tHe Spring Shopping Mall’s Christmas countdown.

Locals and tourists alike packed the outdoor stage area to enjoy the Christmas celebration.

Roads leading to the mall were jam packed from 11pm due to last minute shopping and those dropping by to take part in the countdown.

The event started off with choir performances at 10pm.

Popular and well-known Christmas carols were sung with members of the public joining in and clapping along.

At 11.59pm, the countdown began as everyone chanted the seconds to midnight.

At the stroke of midnight, everyone clapped with joy and fireworks were set off in the sky, painting a panorama of bright colours.

The fireworks continued for half an hour, after which the crowd dispersed.

Water taxis maybe sooner than expected

KUCHING: People in the city, especially tourists, will soon enjoy the uniqueness of Sarawak’s tourism when the water taxi begins its operations.

Housing and Urban Development Minister Datuk Amar Abang Johari Tun Openg said plans for the water taxi operations had almost reached its implementation stage.

Johari said the water taxi, to be operated by a private company, would become a reality faster than many had expected.

“If all goes well, I believe we will see a new product for tourism in Sarawak called the ‘water taxi’ soon,” he told reporters here yesterday.

According to Johari, the water taxi will begin at Kubah Ria near the Satok Bridge, and from there it will travel along the Sarawak River until the Borneo Convention Centre located at Jalan Bako.

Johari assured that the water taxi operation would not affect ‘perahu tambang’, the traditional transportation across the Sarawak River.

“Let me assure those who run the ‘perahu tambang’ business that they will not be affected as the water taxi will take customers along the river, not across it,” he said.

Earlier, Johari attended a discussion session with tourism panelists from Satok in conjunction with the Satok Festival held at the Tourism Complex.

According to him, a competition to design a water taxi will soon be held when plans have reached its implementation stage.

“With this unique mode of transportation, we are confident that the water taxi will be able to attract more tourists to the city,” he concluded.

On Friday night, Johari officiated at the opening of Pesta Satok at the Sarawak Tourism Complex here.

A total 45 booths were set up by exhibitors comprising local companies, non-governmental organisations, government agencies, travel agencies and banks.

Among the activities were Ratu Kebaya Satok, poco-poco competition, Voices of Soulstar, batik fashion show and mini concert.

The Pesta Satok ends later today.

Perfect time to enter Malaysia
By SHARON LING

KUCHING: Singapore-based serviced residence owner-operator The Ascott Limited is set to strengthen its presence in Malaysia with the entry of its Citadines brand of apartment-hotels here.

Named Citadines Kuching Uplands, it will be part of the ST3 complex in Jalan Simpang Tiga developed and owned by local developer Kenbest Sdn Bhd.

“With the launch of this new project, Ascott will reinforce our position as the largest international serviced residence owner and operator in Malaysia.

“From the current 455 units operating in Malaysia, our network will more than double to some 1,200 units across nine properties by 2013,” Ascott chief corporate officer Tony Soh said at a management contract signing ceremony with Kenbest here recently.

It’s sealed: Long (left) exchanging the signed contract with Ong, witnessed by Awang Tengah.

The contract was signed by Ascott managing director for Southeast Asia and Australia Alfred Ong and Kenbest managing director Stephen Long, witnessed by Second Minister of Planning and Resource Management Datuk Awang Tengah Ali Hasan.

Soh said the entry of the Citadines brand into Malaysia was timely as the company looked forward to a sustained recovery in business and investment activities after the global financial crisis.

“The economic outlook has improved for 2010 and beyond. Malaysia’s economic growth and foreign direct investment are expected to grow and the economy of resource-rich Sarawak is likely to benefit from this recovery.

“Under such positive conditions, we are confident that Citadines Kuching will perform well when it commences operations in the first half of 2012,” he said.

Citadines Kuching will be Ascott’s second property in the city after Somerset Gateway. It will feature 215 apartments ranging from studios to one- and two-bedroom units. Amenities include a swimming pool, gymnasium, sauna and restaurant.

Meanwhile, Long said the RM150mil ST3 complex, scheduled for completion by the end of 2011, would be an integrated 12-storey building with a retail mall, offices and serviced residence.
He said the mall would have 300 shopping lots covering over 18,000sqm and a basement carpark.

Although Kuching is a well developed city with everything in place, i would consider Kuching a very good place to live but not in terms of attracting local and international tourists, especially.

Yes, Kuching had the state of art Dun, convention centre, some nice shopping malls, some international hotels, local and international colleges/universities, best medical treatment in Sarawak. The locals are friendly, food are nice, diverse culture.

All these can be found in any other cities that can easily surpass what Kuching has to offer. Just compare cities in Malaysia. An international tourist will choose KL for shopping and entertainment, choose KK for its beaches and mountain, Malacca for its history, Penang, the pearl of the orient for its food.

hmm..good discussn here..but i quite disagree with you..the nature, culture and adventure will not be the same thou. sarawak particularly kuching offer different experience with the other cities.

wat need to be done to further enhance kuching position is to maintain, improve & value added our tourism product & on the same time choose the best market segmentation tat we can serve the best to promote kuching @ sarawak.

Was that an accidental visit to Sarawak that made you discover the all these interests? I still think Sarawak and Kuching in particular needs a strong branding for itself.

Like i said, Kuching had almost a bit of everything as a city. But what makes people think of visiting Kuching or other towns in Sarawak? Will a foreign tourist flying thousand of miles away just to see an organized city or what is stated above?

Offering different experience, yes. But not everyone will explore each and every states in Malaysia..due to time and budget constraints. So, more works need be done to promote Sarawak tourism locally and internationally, i.e to include Sarawak in their itinerary when visiting Malaysia.

Just take a simple facts starting with local tourists. Many west Malaysian still had yet to set their foot to Sarawak soil although things are improving with flying now more affordable. Friends from west Malaysia always say, what do you have in Sarawak? But we are going to visit Sabah soon for mount climbing and scuba diving. That's a strong brand.

From what i can see in this forum, Kuching is focusing too much in shopping malls and more malls. West Malaysia had plenty enough.

well, SCV and serikin is part of kuching identity..of course it may not be as grand as the kinabalu mountain or the famous pulau sipadan but it help create awareness about kuching.as u can see, kuching has less 'mega' nature adventure to keep herself bz. can we promote mount serapi, whch is the nearest mountain to kuching to be part of something must visit?how about gunung santubong?..offcourse not unless the gov built a cable car go way up to gunung santubong but it cost money..

comparing between y sabah record a much higher tourist arrival compare to swk is very difficult..sabah attract tourist mainly due to their excellence nature adventure..sarawak do have also but its not as beauty and magnificient as theirs..tats y we tryng to promoting ourself as a MICE hub.hopefully people will remmber kuching becoz of tat.

An international tourist will choose KL for shopping and entertainment, choose KK for its beaches and mountain, Malacca for its history, Penang, the pearl of the orient for its food.

get ready to read my essay!!

I guess most international tourists would not just come to see our shopping malls.. They have bigger and better malls than KL. In terms of nature, Sarawak has one of the largest and oldest cave. Historical,Our historical buildings here are very different from those in other states. Ours here are very western and i find unique. We have the square tower, round tower, pavilion, post office, old court house ,fort margherita which were All located together making that area like a small town giving a different feeling as if we were somewhere out of Malaysia.
We've got good foods too.. But nowadays some west Malaysians came into our eating market and kindof spoiled the original taste of our local foods.. But im sure that its hard to find cheap food in developed cities like Johor, KL, KK Penang or others.. Kuching although kept developing but the living cost here still very low.. In KK U cant find food less than RM3. In Kuching RM2.50 u can have a bowl of well-known Kolo Mee or chicken Porridge or somethings else.. I Think if more peope Know our place they will definitely come. We can develop and at the same time maintain the cost of expenses.. So our city here is actually more human friendly.. Our government had done a good job on this aspect of prcie control.
I've went to Melacca.. The historical buildings there doesnt actually made me interested... Lake maintainance and very old..But still okay...
And not every cities have same friendly local... I initially like to compare between Kuching with KK is because when i went there last year.. I saw the people there were very proud as if they were very civilize. They talked about the 1 Borneo as if they were the one who built it. They are not helpful and i would say rude.. Dats why sometimes i wanna prove them that they should be more humble. Johor such a huge city but the citizens all are still very humble looking..

I agree that Kuching have a lot behind other cities.. Especially on efficiency of our government.. But it can still be as good as any other tourists destinations as long as our Sarawak Tourism Board have more brain to make more people know the presence of East Malaysia.

thats true. kuching has a rather 'boring' image. i think partly its due to the govt's efforts to decentralise everything. so visitors get the impression that kuching is 'lacking in things' when in fact they would be surprised if they visited the suburbs at how lively things can get

Agree!! Especially on festive seasons.. During Christmas eve our city centre very quiet and empty.. on the other hand our 4th mile area, the spring, churches, and pubs are flooded with damn huge crowds which i never knew Kuching had so many people... The spring really so crowded until its so difficult to walk even outside the mall.. I was trapped one hour in the basement looking for carpark dat time and gave up.. Parked at a nearby neighbourhood and walked to the mall..

hard to say, but somehow, we still recorded 100k and more local tourist from west msia and sabah every mth and roughly 30-50k foreigners (not including indonesian and brunei)if these two were included, we reach almost 200k per moth foreigners..hotel rooms in kuching are always 80%> full and hotel sector keep expanding...watever we say, people keep comin here didnt know for wat reason.but based on their comment in trip advisor, kuching is still the best compare to other place in msia..some from uk & scotland come here 2-3 times a year..

KUCHING: Shoppers in Kuching City now have a new place to get top brand products with the soft opening of Hills Shopping Mall here yesterday. Located at the Kuching’s ‘golden triangle’ area, at Pullman Hotel, Jalan Bukit Mata, there will be 60 shops with 40 kiosks and pushcarts spread over 100,000 sq feet of prime space.
Developed by Interhill Group, the mall is expected to be fully opened in time for the coming Chinese New Year (CNY) in February. According to the mall’s director Jackson Goh, the mall was scheduled for opening by the end of October but psotponed due to some technical problems.
Many activities are being lined up in conjunction with the New Year celebration such as kids colouring contest and CNY bazaar. The colouring contest will be held on January 20, 2010 from 1pm onward. Meanwhile, for the CNY bazaar, the stalls will be set up two weeks before the celebration.
Besides that, the shopping mall will also have interesting activities in conjunction with Valentine’s Day next year and there will also be weekend and monthly events, roadshows and exhibitions for an exciting shopping experience.
“We are trying to bring in something new to the city so we want to invite new brands that other shopping malls do not have. The mall also offer different specialties compared to other shopping mall such as CK Jeans with their first outlet here,” he stated. The shopping mall business hour will be from 10am to 10pm. However, some food outlets will continue until midnight.
Among the retailers expected to feature in the mall are Sen Q Electrical, a 10,000 sq feet toy shop that would be the largest in the city, a 6,000 sq feet bookshop, CK Jeans, Mango, Skin Food from Korea, The Body Shop, Famous Amos, Holly Cow Bistro, Marrybrown and many more.
He added food outlet like Marrybrown will be open 24 hours. The mall can also accommodate 610 car parking lots for the convenience of shoppers who frequent it.
Further information and enquires, can contact the mall team at 253310.

The Hills to house international brands

December 30, 2009, Wednesday

KUCHING: The latest attraction in Kuching city ‘Golden triangle’ - The Hills Shopping Mall – is all set for its grand opening on Jan 20 next year.

Speaking to The Borneo Post during the soft launching of Marry Brown Restaurant at the complex yesterday, complex director Jackson Goh said everyone is invited to visit the complex now as a few outlets have started their operation.

“We have a few outlets operating today (yesterday) such as Marry Brown Restaurant, Times Book Store, Sushi King and GNC Livewell,” Goh said.

He added that among the complex’s attractions would be several international brands which are expected to operate very soon such as Mango and CK Jeans.

“These shops are open to cater for the demands by local shoppers for more international brands and we believe that it would be a hit among local fashion lovers.”

Goh later added that food and beverages section have not been left out with soon to be opened Coffee Bean, Bing Coffee and Old Town White Coffee.

“In addition to these cafes, Hill’s Shopping Mall will also have Food INK, a food court with 14 operators serving various food for those who crave for delicious delicacies,” said Goh.

“Kids meanwhile will surely love the Toy’s R Us, set for its grand opening sometime in January and I believe kids would have a reason why they should come to this complex everytime.”

Another attraction to the complex is New Avenue, a place that consists of 36 mini fashion outlets catering for the needs of trendy youths, while an ICT section having around 32 outlets offering a wide range of high tech gadgets is also on the cards.

“With more than 120 business outlets spreading over 100,000 sq ft in the centre of Kuching city, I believe this complex will offer a balance to cater for everyone needs,” Goh said while revealing that most of the shops will operate before the Chinese New Year.

Goh also added that 610 basement car park lots are available and describes the basement car park as spacious and having well lit conditions.

Meanwhile visitors to the complex will be able to view two Ferrari F430 coupes and convertible sports cars, displayed by Chong Brothers at the complex centre lobby which will be on display until Jan 2.

Sarawak is going "Green", which is good la, no point wasting electricity. Later people say, Sarawak "cakap tak serupa bikin",( don't practise what we preach). Developed cities like Paris, London, New York should adopt the "green" concept, at least it is the right direction towards lessening the impact of carbon emission.

188 shoplots are nice! I myself prefer shoplots than skating rink and cineplex. Current cineplex in kuching are already enough for our kuchingties. Let's not say that there might be another new cineplex at City One Mall in the future time. Somehow, i hope boulevard would bring in more higher-up brands into this phase 2 project, like Gucci, Prada (which i think is quite impossible). Sad ending to Koreans’ holiday
2010/01/03

KUCHING: Two South Korean tourists drowned at a seaside resort in Santubong yesterday while trying to save a woman in their tour group from being
washed out to sea.
The young woman, in her 20s, was saved by a search and rescue team. She was reported to be in critical condition at the Normah Medical Specialist Centre here.

The victims, Kim Sung Hyun, 20, and Jung Yo Han, 24, were among a group of 24 Koreans who had just arrived at the resort.

The tourists were believed to have failed to pay attention to the “red” warning flag and went for a swim around 3pm, according to police and resort staff.

When the young woman, whose name has been withheld by the police, got into difficulties, Kim and Jung rushed to her aid.

However, they got into difficulties themselves due to strong undersea currents.

“They had just checked in around 2pm,”Kuching district police Assistant Commissioner Mun Kok Keong said.

Mun said the red warning flag had been hoisted by the resort, signalling that the sea was rough and dangerous for swimmers.

“They failed to heed the warning flag.” Mun, however, said he had yet to get a clearer picture of what happened.

“We need a translator to take statements from them (the Koreans),” he added.

The search and rescue team, made up of the Civil Defence, Fire and Rescue Department and police personnel from the Santubong station, was deployed immediately after they were alerted.

Kim’s body was recovered at 3.30pm and Jung’s at 4.10pm. The bodies had been sent to the Sarawak Hospital for postmortem.

Mun said police would assist the Koreans in repatriating the bodies of the victims back home.

Abdul Razak Ibrahim, 45, a member of the 911 rescue squad, described the saving of the young woman as miraculous.

“I dived down about 3m at the spot where she was last seen and there she was.

“She was unconscious and must have swallowed a lot of sea water,” Razak said.

The small rescue boat that Razak and his team members used was also constantly battered by waves and the woman had to be brought back to the beach on a surf board.

“I went back to the boat to continue looking for the other two but sea conditions were dangerous.”

The Koreans were believed to have been touring the country for the last three days and were supposed to return home in a direct flight from here to Seoul on budget carrier East-Star Jet today.

They didn't notice the red warning flag. If they knew the tide was very strong, I think they won't risk their lives to swim in the sea. This is a tragedy. :(

KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 7 (Bernama) -- Carrefour Malaysia will open three additional hypermarkets in the Klang Valley by end-January, Marketing and Communications Director for Malaysia and Singapore Low Ngai Yuen said.

"This will bring the total number of Carrefour hypermarkets operating in West Malaysia to 22 by the end of this month," Low said.

Carrefour has no presence in East Malaysia and was now negotiating with several parties in Sabah and Sarawak to set up its hypermarkets there.

"Not stopping in East Malaysia, we are also looking at opportunities to open hypermarkets in Kelantan and Terengganu where we have no presence yet," Low told Bernama after the launch of Carrefour's nationwide Chinese New Year campaign here Thursday.

Carrefour Malaysia's Chief Executive Officer Guillaume de Colonges was recently reported as saying that the company aimed to double the number of hypermarkets in Malaysia to 40 by 2012.

He said Carrefour was positioning itself to emerge as the top foreign hypermarket operator in Malaysia.

Meanwhile, when asked about the market penetration of Malaysia's halal products to other regional markets, Low said Malaysia was respected, globally, as a leading halal products manufacturer.

"We have been bringing small-and-medium entrepreneurs, especially those involved in the halal market, to participate in international food fairs to help promote Malaysian halal products abroad.

"In 2008, we brought them to the International Paris Food Fair and Dubai and Singapore to learn new things while securing more markets for halal products in these countries," she added.

Low said the French halal market was huge and Carrefour provided exclusive halal corners in all their stores in France.

She added Carrefour Singapore also provided halal corners in two of their stores due to demand for these products in the republic.

Carrefour, is the world's number two most successful retailer with more than 15,430 stores in 31 countries globally.

They didn't notice the red warning flag. If they knew the tide was very strong, I think they won't risk their lives to swim in the sea. This is a tragedy. :(

Do all tourists automatically know that red flag means the sea is rough? If I go to a resort and see a red flag with noone explaining to me, I would think that it is just a flag with no special meaning. I wonder if tour operators and resort staff actually educate foreigners about resort security. Or perhaps the koreans do not understand English?

AMC Group opens first Asian regional office in Kuching
January 11, 2010, Monday
http://www.theborneopost.com/?p=4059

KUCHING: AMC Group, a world leader providing innovative cookware, has opened its first regional office in Asia region at Jalan Tun Jugah here to promote quality and healthy lifestyle.

Known as AMC Allied Metalcraft Corporation Sdn Bhd for East Malaysia, the regional office here marks another milestone for AMC Malaysia and it represents continued growth of AMC, with its mission ‘Eat better, live better’.

Opening the regional office yesterday, Kuching City South Mayor James Chan said he supported the expansion of AMC, which focused on good health by offering cost-saving and environment-friendly products.

“I support good quality products and with a new regional office of AMC in Kuching, our people do not need to go all the way to Germany or Singapore to buy the products,” he said.

AMC was founded in Germany in 1963.

Its sales companies have been set up in more than 40 countries across the globe.

In 1980, AMC spread its wings to Malaysia.

AMC Asia Pacific managing director Zafer Evren said the corporation had been in business for nearly half a century with some 10 million customers all over the world.

“We have 18,000 committed part-time and full-time sales partners all around the world.

“We have already 30 years in Malaysia and AMC is even more committed to growing in Malaysia,” he said.

Evren said AMC chose Kuching as its regional office in the Asian region because of its popularity as a clean, organised and beautiful city.

“We believe that our products can offer better quality of life for all,” he added.

AMC East Malaysia sales development manager Alison Si said AMC cookware had proven as the best and most appropriate essential item for every household.

“As we are all busy individuals, each having different lifestyles, living in a more competitive edge and getting to be more health conscious from day to day, AMC cookware can help us attain a healthier lifestyle.

“This regional office will bring us closer to our valued customers besides providing efficient and quality service support,” she said.

Si believed that with the expansion plan, more opportunities were offered for individuals to improve their financial standing as well as personal development.

AMC provided systematic training programme and coaching to produce more successful sales partners, she said, adding: “AMC has proven track record of sales partners in the business for more than 15 years.”

The AMC multi-cooking system allows every household to implement the AMC philosophy ‘Eat better, live better’.

Its stainless steel cook and serveware is the only system in the world, which one can cook, fry, roast and bake without additional water or fat.

Among those present were MBKS acting city secretary John Lee and Chan’s wife Catherine Sng.

Abg Jo: Concerted effort needed to transform Kuching:banana:

BY FRASER PEGIG

KUCHING: Concerted effort is needed to ensure the success of transforming Kuching into a vibrant and livable city, says Minister of Housing and Urban Development Datuk Amar Abang Johari Tun Openg.
This, he added, was also applicable in the development of other cities and major towns throughout the State.
He said that there ought to be new ways and approaches to hasten the transformation process that everybody could be proud of.
“Already, I have some ideas and plans on how to go about making Kuching a more beautiful and livable city able to attract more socio-economic and infrastructural development.“We will seek Federal Government assistance in our development efforts,” he said, at the Housing Development Corporation’s Media Appreciation Night last Saturday, adding that successful programmes implemented in other countries, like the Singapore Urban Renewal Authority, would be studied and adopted where relevant.
“We will settle all outstanding issues and matters, and work out policies and action plans to implement our urban renewal and urban development programmes,” he said.
He, however, said that it was still premature for him to divulge further on the initiative, saying that the transformation of Kuching would focus on upgrading the socio-economy of the city as well as the comfort of the people living in the city and the suburbs.
He said that the people of Kuching and visitors alike could expect tremendous changes, especially in the advancement of public transport system and recreational spots. He added that Kuching had all the assets, like world-class airport, beautiful rivers and attractive recreational spots, to make it a vibrant and lively city. On public transport system, he envisioned that Kuching would be equipped with advanced communication networks and that its waterways would equal the standard of Venice.
He assured that his Ministry would apply new technologies, including information communication technologies, in the development of the public transport system.
Assistant Minister of Housing and Urban Development Abdul Wahab Aziz, the Ministry’s Permanent Secretary Affendi Keli, HDC Board of Directors as well as Daya Perumahan Chairman Datuk Abdul Rahman Junaidi were among those present at the gathering.
In his speech earlier, Johari also called on all concerned, including the media, to play proactive roles in changing the mindset of the people, as part of the social dimension in the transformation process.
He acknowledged the heavy task shouldered by the Ministry, but said: “With the right approach and mindset, I have the confident that all can be done, and at the end of the day, Kuching will be an attractive place to live in and to visit”.

Bus firm wants more govt assistance

A CPL bus.

By Ng Kiang Chiew

KUCHING: A local bus company is asking the government to enhance the level of assistance offered to the transport (bus) sector in the State.
Chan Mou Kei, Director of City Public Link Bus Service Sdn Bhd, said that rampant illegal operators (pirate taxis and vans), inadequate diesel subsidy, and (red tape) when applying for funding/loan as the main problems faced by the sector.
“We hope the authorities can speed up the loan approval process. We also wish that the diesel subsidy is increased to 2,800 litres per bus (now 1,800 litres) or that the diesel subsidy is increased from the present RM1.43 to RM1 per litre. This will make us more competitive against the pirate taxis and vans,” he said when met recently.
Chan also said that pirate taxis and rising operating cost were that main factors that resulted in the cessation of business of Chin Lian Long Motor Vehicle Company Bhd in December last year.
“There are naturally challenges and problems in the industry, as in every industry. But in business we need to plan well and work hard for success,” he said.
The company (City Public Link Bus) which started operation about three months ago, has nine buses plying the city routes. It would put seven more buses this month to service those routes left vacant by Chin Lian Long.
Chan also wanted the local authority to put up a roof over the bus station near Electra House here.
“A little bit of spring cleaning and decoration added to the place will reflect Kuching’s status as the State capital,” he added.

M’sia can bank on its strategic niche in MICE
by Ghaz Ghazali January 12, 2010, Tuesday

http://www.theborneopost.com/newsimages/1176.jpg
MICE TOURISM: File photo shows the Borneo Convention Centre Kuching
complex at the Kuching isthmus in Sejingkat here. Quoting the Chief Minister,
OBG says the state will be hosting 23 conventions this year, with MICE
tourism is set to invest substantially in direct delegate expenditure while
Sarawak Convention Bureau is expected to generate 136,000 delegate days
next year.

KUCHING: Malaysia continues to seek opportunities in capitalising on the growing MICE (meetings, incentives, conferences and exhibitions) segment of the global travel industry, building on its already strong tourism-brand recognition and a new generation of purpose-built facilities.

Economic and market intelligence firm Oxford Business Group (OBG) posted this in its latest online business briefing, adding that Malaysia has already established itself in the international MICE tourism segment.

According to OBG, the country was ranked at number 32 in the world by International Convention and Conference Association (ICCA) in its 2008 report on the meetings market, having drawn more than 80 such events. Kuala Lumpur fared even better on the ICCA’s city ladder, being placed on the 27th place last year as the venue for 61 MICEs.

Nevertheless, OBG observed that Malaysia is gearing up to improve its standing, both by further promoting its MICE potential and increasing several venue options on offer. In the middle of November last year, the government announced it had made a deal with TTDI KL Metropolis Sdn Bhd (TTDI Metropolis), which is a unit of the Naza Group, to develop a new exhibition and convention centre in Kuala Lumpur specifically targeting large-scale MICE events.

Phase-one works on the Malaysian External Trade Development Corporation (Matrade) Centre, which will comprise a 93,000 square-metre expo centre on 13.1 acres of land located off Jalan Duta, is scheduled to begin in the second quarter of this year.

Upon completion, the landmark is slated to become the largest exhibition and convention centre in the country, consisting of a main exhibition centre, a multi-purpose hall, auditorium, meeting rooms and display arena, in addition to a hotel, shopping mall and office tower.

Based on a preliminary projection, the total project costs for Matrade Centre is RM628 million and is due to open its doors in 2014.

Besides the Matrade Centre, the project will also develop the 62.45 acres of land, which will be transferred from the government to TTDI Metropolis in exchange for building the expo centre.

The mixed development, to be provisionally known as Naza KL Metropolis Development, will be developed over the next 15 to 20 years and will have a gross development value of RM15 billion.

The Matrade Centre, due to open its doors in 2014, is estimated to he total project costs for the Matrade Centre is RM628 million.

Moreover, OBG noted that it is not just in Kuala Lumpur that Malaysia is looking to cash in on MICE tourism, as some of the country’s outlying regions such as Sarawak and Melaka have also been promoting their credentials as a business meetings destination, with a good degree of success.

Quoting Chief Minister Pehin Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud, OBG said the state will be hosting 23 conventions this year, with MICE tourism is set to invest substantially in direct delegate expenditure while Sarawak Convention Bureau is expected to generate 136,000 delegate days next year.

Additionally, Taib said Sarawak is in the position to combine more traditional forms of tourism with the business segment of the industry to offer a premium package, allowing the state to fully exploit its assets.
Meanwhile, OBG also mentioned Melaka as another state that is seeing MICE as a noteworthy component of its tourism trade boom. Citing its Chief Minister Datuk Seri Mohd Ali Rustam, it said Melaka could host up to one million MICE tourists this year based on current strong trends.

In the first eight months of last year, the historical state received 635,482 MICE tourists as compared to 565,748 for the same period in 2008.

OBG further commented that with 6.6 million visitors to Melaka in the first 10 months of last year, of whom one million were foreigners, the MICE contribution to the total is significant and rising.

In reference to Ali Rustam’s statement, it said that by promoting tourism sub-sectors such as MICE would not only create more business prospects to develop the industry into becoming a major contributor to the state’s economy but would also generate more employment opportunities.

In this respect, Malaysia’s overall tourism industry has enjoyed a very good year despite the global economic downturn, with arrival numbers well up on 2008 and the month-on-month figures climbing steadily as at last year’s end.

According to data released by the Tourism Ministry last November, arrivals stood at 19.45 million visitors up until last October, a 7.2 per

9 buses plying each city route or 9 buses in total for the whole city route?

Thats wierd because as what i can see, Kuching-samarahan route is quite efficient. a bus in every 30-20 minutes, thats incude Petra Jaya bus and CPL.

Bus station near the electra house is not really a bus stop. I still remember the main bus stop was at exacly at the construction site of the Plaza Merdeka. I think, the government want all our public bus provider to stop at our future Kuching Sentral as a central bus station. If they really want to do that, the government should really speed up the construction of Kuching Sentral.

Red flag, as a warning sign, is pretty universal all over the world. I ve seen red flags during monsoon season all over the place in our east coast (Pantai Telok Chempedak in Kuantan, Cherating Beach, Marang beach).

Similarly, I ve seen red flags used as a warning sign at such diverse places including Biarritz beach in France's Atlantic coast, some beach area outside Sydney, and also in Kuta beach in Bali..Sometimes, the flag is accompanied by a warning (usually in local language), and sometimes just a plain, red flag.

Its too bad that their vacation ended that way. But people must lean to be a little bit more observant...

Teksi Air di Sungai S’wak bermula Jun ini: Abang Jo

by Jessica Jawing
January 15, 2010, Friday

Political stability puts S’wak ahead of Sabah: Lajim

January 17, 2010, Sunday

MUKAH: Deputy Minister of Housing and Local Government Datuk Seri Panglima Lajim Ukin singled out political stability in Sarawak as the major factor for Sarawak to become more developed than his home state of Sabah over the last few decades.

As such, Lajim reminded Sarawakians to treasure and safeguard this political stability. Lajim said this in his speech at the launch of Local Agenda 21 (LA21) of Mukah Dalat District Council (MMDM) here on Friday.

“Political stability in Sarawak has spearheaded Sarawak to enjoy more development and progress than Sabah over the last 20 years or so.

“In fact, development in Sabah started to slow down when we (in Sabah) adopted a system to rotate the chief ministership among heads of our political parties in Sabah several years back. That destabilised our political unity and interrupted economy and infrastructural development.

“Therefore, it is imperative for all Sarawakians to treasure and safeguard this political stability by standing steadfastly united behind the current BN government in order to achieve greater prosperity and progress in future years.

“We must appreciate the fact that the BN government is a caring, fair and just government. BN leaders give priority to the needs of the rakyat to reciprocate the strong support and confidence of the people.

“The fact that BN MPs and assemblymen brought projects and goodies to the grassroots were clear testimonies of our commitment and dedication to serve the rakyat, clearly underlined by the 1Malaysia concept espoused by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Mohd Najib Tun Razak with the tagline of People’s First, Performance Now,” said Lajim, stressing that BN government never marginalised or sidelined any ethnic group in the country.

Lajim reminded the people not to listen to rumours spread by the opposition to discredit the government.

He called on all local councils in Sarawak to adopt the LA21 to create a clean and harmonious living environment within their areas of jurisdiction.

Lajim announced that MDDM was given an annual grant of RM998,000 this year by the federal government.

MDDM chairman Walikota Ali Suhaili delivered a welcoming speech followed by a speech from Mukah MP Dato Sri Dr Muhammad Leo Michael Toyad at the ceremony, which was also attended by a political secretary to the Chief Minister-cum-Jemoreng assemblyman Abu Seman Jahwie, Mukah Resident Saudi Narani and other heads of government departments and agencies.

Once the state BN parties collapse, the largest BN party from the west will enter sarawak and create another sabah-like situation.

It is sad that we have to vote for our bribe-filled state BN parties. We have
to choose the less evil one among the devils.

Damai Bay Bazaar to liven up Damai

KUCHING: Damai Bay Bazaar (DBB), located at Teluk Bandung Damai, is the latest project of Sarawak Economic Development Corporation (SEDC) to turn the not easily accessible seafront into an oasis of leisure and recreation. It stretches along a natural scenic bay facing the South China Sea, right in the middle of Damai Beach Resort, Damai Puri Resort and Spa, and Sarawak Cultural Village which covers approximately eight acres.
According to a press release, the Damai Bay Bazaar was conceptualised in 2000 to make Damai a more vibrant commercial hub to complement existing tourism attractions and hotel resorts in the area.

The success of the DBB project is not confined to its completion within time and budget but its impact on society.

The project is an important step to develop Damai and properties in the area as an integrated product as well as help earned tourism revenue, create employment and spillover economic activities to benefit local entrepreneurs.

Neither the extraordinary physical outlook nor compliance to tenancy agreement is sufficient to signify the success of the project.

DBB aims to create the hustle and bustle of commercial activities in the Damai area, provide more leisure-based activities to attract local and foreign visitors to Damai, enliven Damai in the evening, and promote more socio-economic growth in the area.

Other aspects such as its products and services, speedy delivery system and excellent customer service are important considerations.

This comprehensive approach is to enable the property to be successful in its operation and be self-sustaining in the long term.

“The proposed project was approved by the Ministry of Tourism Malaysia with a grant of RM16 million whilst MECD contributed RM1 million,” said the press release.

The project is to provide affordable business premises for the Bumiputera community in retail and food trading. DBB will be an exciting mix of leisure, entertainment, shopping and recreational facilities.

The centre piece will be a cluster of shops around a public square landscaped with gardens, fountains and shaded structures.

DBB will provide benefits like activities and a centre of focus for day trips from Kuching city as well as surrounding hotel guests, commercial opportunities for small businesses such as food, drinks and craft stall operators as well as rental of equipment for sea activities and opportunities to showcase Sarawakian food and culture.
Phase 1, expected for completion by the end of this year, will provide space for commercial purposes, a prayer room and public toilet.

There will be 10 food stalls, six commercial shops, five retail shops, two restaurants, business centre, multi-purpose hall, recreational centre, bus lay-by, parking bays, children playground, multi-purpose open lawn, arts and crafts gallery, sea sports and bicycle kiosks, exhibition area and audio visual room.

The project will turn the existing not-easily accessible seafront into an oasis of leisure and recreation that visitors and locals can enjoy and be in touch with the beach and South China Sea.
The commercial units in the recreational park are only for rental.

Kuching expects to solve bus service problems by year-end
Tuesday January 19, 2010

KUCHING: Commuters in Kuching and its suburbs can expect smooth bus services by the end of the year.

The slow delivery of buses has affected the operations of CityPublic Link Bus Service Sdn Bhd, which had been tasked to serve the city and its suburbs.

The company has managed to serve only six routes with its 11 buses.

“We are still waiting for the new buses to be delivered from Kuala Lumpur.

“If there is no delay, we hope to go full swing by end of the year,” the company’s operations manager Leslie Liew told The Star recently.

Liew said the company had been issued permits to operate in 40 new routes which required between 50 and 60 buses.

He said, with just 11 buses, there was no way the company could serve all the city routes, let alone the 40 new routes.

Chin Lian Long Motor Vehicle Company Bhd’s blue and white buses had served the city and its suburbs for decades but decided to ceased operations in December last year due to rising operating costs.

Following this, many of the city routes were not served.

Liew said his company could afford to serve only two routes vacated by by Chin Lian Long, while the rest were all new routes.

Sarawak Commercial Vehicle Licensing Board said that CityPublic Link was given two years to serve all 40 routes.

It director Wan Samsuri Wan Hasbi said, for the time being, Bintang Jaya and Petrajaya were helping out with the service.

He said the former was given four while the latter two temporary permits to operate on six routes in the city.

Aside from City Public Link, other companies providing stage-bus service are Sarawak Transport Company, which serves the Kuching area and south-west Sarawak, Petra Jaya Transport serving Bako, Damai and Santubong, Matang Transport Company serving Matang and Kubah, and Regas Transport’s beige buses serve the city and its suburbs.

Not bad...I find it hard to enjoy a good direct view of the sea when I'm at Damai, the only way is through the Kampung and not far from SMK Santubong, a road that will lead to the beach...there is a nice glass house at the beach front..., there you get a good view of the bach and especially the majestic sunset...with this bazaar, I can see more trips for me to Damai in the future....for "makan" sessions and just to hang out and chill...

State hopes to increase tourism revenue

KUCHING: Tourism revenue for the state last year was recorded at RM6 billion and the government plans to increase it by 10% this year, according to Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Dr George Chan Hong Nam in a media conference at his office in Petra Jaya yesterday.
Chan added the state did not promote tourism aggressively before because it did not have enough tourism infrastructures such as hotels then.
“Now, we have all the tourism infrastructures in place and we are in a position to promote the tourism industry aggressively,” he said.
Chan who is also the Minister of Tourism and Heritage said 39 tourism-related events will be held this year, out of which 11 of them have been earmarked as highlights for foreign tourists.
They are the Mukah Kaul Festival (April 17-25), Miri International Jazz Festival (May 14-15), Irau Aco (June 1-3, Lawas), Pesta Babulang (June 4-6, Limbang), Borneo Cultural Festival (July 16-25, Sibu), Rainforest World Music Festival (July 9-11, Kuching), Sarawak Regatta (July 31-Aug 2, Kuching), Kuching Street Parade (Aug 2), Sarawak Inter Cultural Mooncake Festival (Sept 17-22, Kuching), Borneo International Kites Festival (Sept 30-Oct 3, Bintulu) and the Borneo International Yatching Challenge (Oct 4-9 , Miri).
He said the events reflected the various tapestries of cultural, ritual, musical, sports and arts activities, which are of great interest to the tourists.
The events were also meant to provide socio- economic activities to the local community, apart from making the state a vibrant and lively place, Chan said.
He reminded the relevant tourism players to make sure that in whatever events they are organising, the tourists should not only watch but be allowed to take part as well.
“Nowadays tourists do not like to be mere spectators. They like to participate in local activities.
“We can offer them something different, we can get them to participate in some activities which can leave on them memorable and lasting impressions about the state.
About three million tourists visited the state last year. In 2008, the number of visitors was less than three million while 2007 registered a record 3.4 million.

There will be 3 types of river taxi come July

KUCHING: The Ministry of Housing and Urban Development plans to introduce three categories of river taxi, namely a five-seater, a 10-seater and a 15-seater, when the service is introduced by July this year.
Its Minister Datuk Amar Abang Haji Abdul Johari Tun Abang Haji Openg said he would be assessing these three types of boats first.
“The public can apply for a water taxi licence from the Marine Department which is the licencing department,” Johari told a news conference here yesterday.
He added that the river taxis would ply from Kubah Ria to the Borneo Convention Centre Kuching (BCCK), covering a distance of 10 nautical miles.
“The question is getting the right design proposed by the people in the business and then we will evaluate. The most important thing is safety. In this case, the Marine Department and the Sarawak Rivers’ Board (SRB) will assess it before it is used,” he added.
Last week, Johari who is also the State Assemblyman of Satok, said that the river taxi would be designed by the local people.
“This is part of our approach to provide public transportation service. Apart from land transportation, we will also use our rivers as a means to reduce traffic congestion.
“Secondly, this will provide another mode of transport, especially to the people of Kuching,” he said.
He said a committee chaired by the Permanent Secretary to the Ministry of Housing and Urban Development had been formed to look into the matter.
“Its members include representatives from Sarawak River Board (LSS), Marine Department, Institut Reka Bentuk and the Satok Tourism Committee,” he said.
The committee will monitor and find the best approach to introduce the river taxi, he said, adding that one of the tasks given to them is to organise a river taxi design competition.
“We want the public to participate in the competition, and to use their creativity to come up with a new and attractive design for the river taxis,” he said.
“I have set a target date. By July, when this design competition is completed, we will have three types of boats,” he said.
The boats will be built at affordable costs of between RM10,000 to RM15,000 each.
He also disclosed that the government would build more stations, jetties or pontoons along the rivers for the purpose.
“So we are going to build at least between five to eight new jetties along the Sarawak River between BCCK and Pasar Satok,” he said.
“The fare from the various stations will be worked out by the committee, and we are also thinking of making use of the card system.
“Our system will be very up to date,” he said.
Johari also assured that the introduction of the river taxi will not affect the perahu tambang business.

SARAWAK EYEING BIG-SPENDING TOURISTS THIS YEAR

KUCHING, Jan 20 (Bernama) -- Sarawak has lined up 39 tourism events this year, covering all cities and towns, to bring in the big-spending tourists to fill the state's coffers.

Deputy Chief Minister Tan Sri Dr George Chan said today that tourists spent a total of RM6 billion in Sarawak last year and the target this year was for them to spend over 10 per cent more.

"As for the target for tourist arrivals, we have not decided yet but definitely we must do better than last year," he told reporters after the soft launch of Sarawak's 2010 tourism calendar here.

Dr Chan, who is also state Tourism and Heritage Minister, said that with 39 tourism events taking place this year, it meant an evarage of three events per month.

All the events would reflect the cultural, ritual, musical, sports and arts aspects.

He highlighted 11 of the events which could generate more income and lure more tourists to the state.

They were the Mukah Kaul Festival in April, Miri International Jazz Festival (May), Irau Aco Festival (June), Pesta Babulang (June), Borneo Cultural Festival (July), Rainforest World Music Festival (July), Sarawak Regatta (July-August), Kuching Street Parade (August),Sarawak Intercultural Mooncake Festival (September), Borneo International Kites Festival (Sept-October) and Borneo International Yachting Festival (October).

Dr Chan suggested that the tourism industry come up with a new package to cater to the adventurous tourists as the trend now was towards active participation from local and foreign tourists.

Despite being badly hit by the influenza A (H1N1) epidemic and the global economic downturn, Sarawak's tourism industry, its second biggest revenue earner, managed a commendable perfomance by attractiong 3.2 million tourists last year compared with less than 3 million in 2008.

Sarawak To Introduce Environmental Friendly Bus Service In Kuching

KUCHING, Jan 20 (Bernama) -- Old buses using diesel engines are expected to be phased out in Kuching over a five-year period to enable environmental friendly bus services, said State Housing and Rural Development Minister Datuk Amar Abang Johari Tun Openg here Wednesday.

Amar Abang Johari said since the old diesel buses were dirty and emitted smoke that was unhealthy, maintaining such buses services was not practical, as passengers were not comfortable and that resulted in people avoiding bus services in Kuching.

"Condition of buses in service are deplorable. Who will want to use such services? That is why we are going to introduce environmental friendly buses that use natural gas," he told reporters after meeting Kuching Selatan Town Councilors here.

He said a meeting would be held with those providing public transport services, by end of this month, to discuss ways and means to overcome traffic congestion in Kuching.

Amar Abang Johari said Chief Minister Tan Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud had directed him to restructure the public transport system, including water taxis in Sungai Sarawak, so as to attract more tourists to Kuching.

Launching of plant at Senari by chief minister puts state in world map

KUCHING: Sarawak is now producing biodiesel following the completion its first biodiesel plant operated by Senari Biofuels Sdn Bhd on a ten-acre site at Assar Senari Industrial Complex near here.

Chief Minister Pehin Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud, when launching the plant yesterday, said this new venture has put Sarawak in the world map for yet another renewable energy initiative.

“Hopefully, we could have more biodiesel plants. From what I learnt, there is one being planned for Tanjong Manis,” he said.

Minister of Housing and Urban Development Datuk Amar Abang Johari Tun Openg, assistant ministers and the top people from Assar Senari Group and Senari Biofuels were also present at the launching ceremony.

Senari Biofuel, a wholly-owned Sarawak company started the RM80-million project nearly four years ago.

According to its executive chairman, Dato Abang Khalid Marzuki, this plant was constructed in view of the availability of feedstock from ASG’s Assar Refinery Services and also a growing demand from international buyers especially Thailand, South Korea, Europe and the United States.

Using state-of-the-art British technology, the plant is capable of producing 120,000 metric tons of biodiesel annually and also other downstream palm oil products such as polyurethane commonly used as biodegradable building insulation materials.

Once fully operational by March this year, the plant will cater for both the export and local market.

“After 20 months of construction, Senari Biofuels is now ready to commence operation.”

ASG chairman Tan Sri Bujang Mohd Nor, who also spoke, said Sarawak is blessed with huge land suitable for oil palm plantations.

This, he said, is a strategic advantage for ASG and its partners to fully intensify its biodiesel research and development efforts.

“With the help of our strong partners in international and domestic marketing and distribution, such as Trafigura International, Petronas and Shell, it is indeed our aspiration for people in southern Sarawak to enjoy the benefits of using Sarawak’s own biodiesel by the end of this year,” he said.

Following the agreement signing yesterday there was an exchange of agreement documents between Senari Biofuels represented by Khalid and ASG represented by chief executive officer Syeed Mohd Hussien.

These agreements allow Senari Biofuels to purchase nearly RM120 million worth of palm feedstock from ASG’s Assar Refinery for f 30 years.

Taib later handed over ISO 9001 and ISO 14000 certificates to ASG and also donations of RM5,000 each from the two companies to the five surrounding villages.

Prior to arriving at the function, Taib also took a 45-minute river cruise from his residence at Demak Jaya to Assar Senari Port on KD Bijak vessel belonging to the Marine Enforcement Agency (APMM).

He was accompanied by Bujang and Syeed.

During the cruise he was briefed him on the developments taking place in the area.

The city council don't have money to build flyover.....All the money goes to their vehicles and houses and they would rather use that money to build their conference building for their convinient than for the People's convinient.

Korean parents to continue son’s work

Professor Jeung (2nd right) handing over the sponsorship to UNIMAS Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr Fatimah Abang (2nd left).

KUCHING: It was an emotional time for Professor Jeung Kaekyu and his wife during their recent visit to Sarawak to cover the trail of their son, Jeong Yohan’s tour programme in Sarawak.
Jeung Yohan and another Korean male, Kim Seong Hyun lost their lives recently in an attempt to save a female friend, who encountered problems while swimming in the sea.
Both of them, who were part of a group of Korean students embarking on missionary trip, took chances despite the meter-high strong waves and strong underwater currents during the monsoon season, to come to the rescue of their friend.
Their unselfish act was joined by a Norwegian guest, Thomas Harklau, members of the local Civil Defense Corp team who were on duty at the site manning the watch tower and the resort staff.
While the life-savers sprang to action with the aid of kayaks and life saving equipment, rescuers managed to save the lone fear-stricken lady who was held on by the Norwegian, Thomas Harklau.
An immediate search and rescue operation was launched by the rescuers and 10 minutes into the search time, the first victim was spotted and was washed ashore by strong underwater current. In honour of his late son, he donated RM100,000 to the St Thomas’ Church, Kuching and offered 10 scholarships to under-privileged students at UNIMAS Kuching Campus under the Jeung Yohan Foundation.
Subsequently CPR was administered by paramedics from the General Hospital and JPA but was unsuccessful.
The second victim was found minutes later approximately 30 meters from the scene of the incident. Again, CPR was administered but the victim was pronounced dead by the paramedics.
It was indeed tragic but the ill fated outing saw the daring rescue mounted by two young men at the expense of their lives.
Professor Jeung, a professor in History, expressed gratitude to those who had assisted in the incident during the said visit.

Monthly market at BGS waterfront set to become tourist attraction

KUCHING: A monthly market to be set up along the Boyan, Gersik and Sourabaya (BGS) waterfront will be a tourist attraction once it is launched.
“With the existence of the market, tourists can buy a wide variety of jungle produce and sea products,” Pantai Damai State Assemblyman Dr Abdul Rahman Junaidi said.
“Most of the current tourists visiting BGS are there only to buy traditional cookies and cakes such as ‘kek lapis’.
“With the vegetable market, BGS can attract more tourists to come and shop for jungle produce and sea products,” he told reporters here
yesterday.
Also present at the press conference were Director of Federal Agriculture Marketing Authority (FAMA) Paza Dan and the Penghulu of Boyan, Gersik and Sourabaya villages Kassim Wahed.
Abdul Rahman added that the villagers would collaborate with FAMA and the tourist agency to promote the market. “For a start, 30 stalls will be set up, if the response is good more will be put up,” he said, adding that the market would held once a month on a week-end.
The stall holders will operate from 8am to 10pm on Saturday and 6am to 12 noon on Sunday.
Deputy Agriculture and Agrobased Industry Minister Datuk Hajah Rohani Abdul Karim is expected to launch the market on February 6.

RM200m needed for modern city transport: Abg Jo

January 28, 2010, Thursday

KUCHING: The state government will request between RM150 and RM200 million to improve and modernise the bus services in the city.

MODERN BUS SERVICES: Johari displaying the proposed ‘Bus Priority System’ which integrates computerised traffic lights, electronic information boards, dedicated bus lanes and pollution free buses with GPS and electronic ticketing. — Photo by Jeffery Mostapa

Minister of Housing and Urban Development Datuk Amar Abang Johari Tun Openg said if he could raise the fund, the city’s public transport would certainly be transformed.

“Public transportation is one of our National Key Result Areas (NKRAs) and it is envisaged that within five years time Kuching will not only enjoy modern bus services but also an integrated public transport system when the land transport is linked with the water taxis” he said during press conference after being briefed by Sarawak Transport and Co Association (STC), Traffic Committee and Commercial Vehicle and Licensing Board (LPKP)

“Our aim is to start with 50 new public buses through partnership with private operators. The cost of these modern buses will be between RM750,000 and RM1 million. Therefore, it may not be financially feasible for private operators to revamp the bus operations on their own due to the lack of funds and high costs of operation,” he said.

He added that the fund would be used to improve the public transportation infrastructure, integrating modern technologies such as electronic tickets and Global Positioning System (GPS).

The implementation would not only benefit locals and stakeholders, but most importantly it will also boost tourism into the city, he said.

According to Johari there are currently 101 registered buses in Kuching and 13 per cent of the city’s population depends on public transportation and 85 per cent passengers depending on buses.

“Because of the poor bus transport services, people are increasingly turning to private mode of transport. If this trend continues, the public transport’s mode share will be reduced to 10 per cent in the year 2020,” he said.

Johari explained that the trend would affect the viability of buses as public transportation which in turn will cause traffic congestion, high carbon emission and pollution.

He said that with the city’s population current annual average growth rate put at 3.3 per cent, the city’s projected population would reach about 700,000 by the year 2020.

“Right now the average speed during morning and evening peak hours is about 20km per hour. We are concerned that unrestrained traffic volume growth will result in intolerable congestion levels that will reduce the average speed to 10km per hour by the year 2020,” he added.

According to Johari, motor vehicle registration has been growing at the rate of approximately 6.2 per cent per annum and the figures have now reached 200,000 cars and 195,000 motorcycles, with average car ownership at 0.8 car per household.
The implementation of the new buses would help limit carbon emissions and pollution enough to meet Malaysia’s commitment to reduce carbon emission by 40 per cent in the year 2025.

Johari said that the buses would also cater to the elderly and handicapped and there would be bus lanes and bus stops equipped with electronic information boards to ensure timely arrivals and departures.

He added that a new route system connecting the city centre to the suburbs would be implemented.

“Kuching Central will be the main hub connecting to a series of sub-hubs in the suburbs, to encourage the park-and-ride system that will help reduce entry of private vehicles into the city centre,” he said.

Water taxis for Kuching
By ZORA CHAN Thursday January 28, 2010

Better transport: Abang Johari showing the proposed
route for the water taxi service on Sarawak River.

KUCHING: City dwellers can soon opt for water taxis as a new mode of public transportation that promises to ease traffic congestion.

Sarawak Housing and Urban Development Minister Datuk Abang Johari Abang Openg said his ministry and state agencies dealing with Sarawak River would carry out a study towards this end.

“The service will be an alternative mode of transport for the public and become a tourism product,” he said after chairing a meeting on the matter recently.

Johari said the route between the new Satok market in Kubah Ria and Borneo Convention Centre Kuching covering 10 nautical miles would take less than 20 minutes to cover.

Work was underway to build up to eight jetties on the river by next year, he said.

“We aim to get at least three water taxis in operation by July.

“The boats will be five, 10 and 15-seaters,” he said, adding that the service would be linked to transport on land.

Johari said a committee comprising officers from his ministry, Sarawak Rivers Board, Satok Tourism Committee and the Marine Department would determine the water-taxi fares.

He said the taxis would be equipped with latest technology like GPS and have comfortable seats.

A water-taxi design contest would be announced soon to find the best and most-affordable design, he said.

“The fibreglass boats have to cost between RM10,000 and RM15,000,” he said.

The facility would boost tourism in the city like the one in Malacca, he added.

“Kuching is a vibrant city with good waterways. We should exploit this and turn the city into another Venice by creating a product that can sell,” he said.

Johari said the perahu tambang (traditional boats) would be maintained to serve routes between villages along Sarawak River and the city centre.

“There are about 10 perahu tambang,” he said, adding that the water taxi service would not affect the perahu tambang operators.

Kuching Waterfront To Offer Better Facilities With Extension Project

KUCHING, Jan 29 (Bernama) -- The Kuching Waterfront is poised to feature upgraded facilities with the anticipated completion of the city's riverine icon extension project being undertaken by the Sarawak Economic Development Corporation (SEDC) by December this year.

State Assistant Tourism and Heritage Minister Datuk Talib Zulpilip, who is also SEDC chairman, said the RM14 million-project through funding from the federal Tourism Ministry, included the construction of a 380-metre long walkway starting from the Riverbank Suite Condominium along the Sarawak River and the refurbishing of the historic Square Tower.

"We will request more allocations under the 10th Malaysia Plan for the ongoing project to provide more quality-of-life activities for the people to meet and enjoy themselves while at the same time feel safe," he told a media conference to launch the Kuching Waterfront event calendar for 2010 themed as "Culture and Community" here today.

He said this year's theme promised a variety of cultural and art activities, which would utilise the Kuching Waterfront, aptly dubbed as the "People's Place," as a platform to showcase Sarawak's rich cultural heritage besides providing a venue for local artists to display their talents.

These programmes, the product of concerted efforts of the Kuching Waterfront management and supported by the Sarawak National Culture and Arts Department, Malaysia Tourism Promotion Board, Sarawak branch, other local cultural and non-governmental organisations, were expected to be an attraction with tourists and the local community, he added.

The events lined up include a variety of ethnic dances, demonstrations on local crafts, traditional games, martial arts, local food of the various ethnic groups as well as modern activities such as marching bands, street dancing, children talent shows, kite-flying competition, street soccer and water activities, including kayaking, boat-racing and angling.

SEDC tourism and leisure division director Wan Lizozman Wan Omar said it was complementing the tourism police team stationed at the Kuching Waterfront and personnel from the Kuching district police station by increasing the number of its in-house guards on round-the clock patrols to ensure the safety of visitors.

Apart from minor incidents caused by trouble-makers and other social problems, he said there had not been any reported cases of serious crimes.

Sarawak Wants To Achieve Zero Squatters Under 10MP

By Amrizan Madian

In conjunction with the NKRA open day at the Sarawak state level.

KUCHING, Jan 14 (Bernama) -- Squatter colonies may be a thing of the past in Sarawak, as the state gears up housing development under the 10th Malaysia Plan (10MP).

With the 'zero squatter' target being one of the National Key Target Areas (NKRA), Sarawak is embarking on grand plans to turn existing squatter colonies into occupant friendly housing areas and build affordable homes for hardcore poor and low income earners.

With 50,000 homes in the pipeline under 10MP, those living in squatter colonies, the hardcore poor, and low and medium wage earners can expect a better abode that comes complete with public amenities that these people previously could only dream of.

During an exclusive interview with Bernama, State Housing Minister Datuk Amar Abang Johari Tun Openg noted that there were about 10,000 squatter homes all over Sarawak with most located in major towns like Miri (about 4,000), Bintulu (3,000), Kuching (1,800) while the rest in Sibu and several other cities and towns.

OF FRIENDLY HOMES AND MAINTAINING TRADITIONS

As many of the squatter colonies are very old and are considered traditional villages, Abang Johari pointed out that their traditions have to maintained while the colony is reorganised.

Thus the ministry has introduced the People Friendly Homes (RMR) programme that focuses on reorganising traditional villages without affecting their traditions.

At the same time those living there, especially with low income, will be given the opportunity to own better homes and live in an environment with complete amenities.

"Our RMR programme is to create a more people friendly traditional village environment by expanding the village systematically without affecting the traditions of the society residing there," he said.

The main focus for the RMR programme is in town areas and hitherto, the idea has been well received by the people especially when it helps low income earners to own better homes.

AFFORDABLE HOMES WITH NEW DESIGN

Abang Johari noted that the state Housing Development Corporation (HDC) has plans to increase the construction of new affordable homes in the state with the houses more appealing, spacious and occupant friendly.

At the same time those buying these houses need not spend extra in renovating them.

"We no longer want to see rows and rows of affordable houses that are cramped and not appealing in their design," he said.

HDC is looking into single and double-storey houses that are not only affordable for the masses but also complete with public amenities and greeneries around them.

Amenities like playground and place to hold functions or activities are high on the list.

Currently, HDC has identified several home designs that can be owned at affordable prices and its is hoped that they can be implemented under the 10MP.

FLATS AT MAIN TOWNS

The government also emphasizes on the development of flats to overcome shortage of houses in highly populated areas, especially in main towns and cities in the state.

Abang Johari noted that the HDC and private concerns have built several flats and they are increasingly gaining acceptance especially in big towns.

"The flats are earmarked for those earning below RM1,500 and they can rent them until they can afford to buy them," he said.

The migration of rural dwellers to towns has pushed up demand for homes in major towns and cities like Kuching.

"Most of these people neither have relatives in town nor permanent jobs and this makes it difficult for them to buy a home.

"I'm confident that through the concept of rent first buy later, low income earners and those without permanent jobs can still enjoy a comfortable abode," he said.

A TARGET OF 50,000 UNITS 10TH MP

Sarawak has set a target of 50,000 homes throughout the state with 20,000 of the total developed by the state government.

Abang Johari also pointed out that any housing development in the state covering more than 4.4 hectares had to allocate 30 percent of the development for affordable homes.

Sarawak has also set high hopes on the federal government regarding adequate allocation to build homes especially for the low income earners.

PUBLIC TRANSPORT SISTEM TO BE REVAMPED

As good public housing is incomplete without good public transportation, Abang Johari said the state government has decided to overhaul the land transport system that is in a poor state. A better transport system is among the six NKRA.

"We not only plan to provide new buses but also integrate their routes using GPS to provide wider coverage," he said.

He said for start the public transportation amenities in Kuching is being upgraded with the construction of the Kuching Central terminal at Batu 6 Jalan Kuching-Serian.

Several mini hubs for public transportation will also be set up at several strategic areas at Kuching city.

Currently, the public don't rely much on public transport especially the bus system as the service is inconsistent and the buses are too old.

"I'm confident that after this many will return to the bus service, not only the low income earners but also the middle income earners and executives.

"We have a new approach that is never seen in any other towns or cities in the country including Kuala Lumpur," he said.

Sarawak aims to lure 3.6 million international tourists

KUCHING: The Malaysia Tourism Promotion Board’s Sarawak office is targeting 3.6 million international tourist arrivals – about 15% of this year’s national target of 24 million.

Its director Ahmad Johanif Mohd Ali said that Sarawak recorded 1.8 million international arrivals from Brunei, Indonesia, the Philippines, Singapore, Britain, China, Australia, Thailand, India and the United State last year.

He said the board would help make homestays in Sarawak a vital product because of its uniqueness.

There are 19 homestays registered with the board and the most popular was the one in Kampung Annah Rais which recorded 3,370 international and 2,466 domestic guests.

Homestays in Sarawak generated about half-a-million ringgit in revenue last year.

Aside from going green, the board would enhance niche products such as culture, adventure and nature.

“It is our aspiration to increase Sarawak’s international hotel guests to 1.2 million and domestic guests to 2.5 million this year,” Ahmad said at a briefing with representatives of tourism industry players here.

Sarawak hotels recorded 863,066 international guests and 2,023,115 domestic guests last year.

Kuching Waterfront To Offer Better Facilities With Extension Project
January 29, 2010 15:33 PM

Sarawak Economic Development Corporation (SEDC) deputy general manager Wan Lizozman Wan Omar said that more security guards had been deployed since the beginning of this year to patrol the area and prevent untoward incidents.

“We have doubled the number of guards at any one time from five to 10 and they will patrol round the clock.

“We are working closely with the police, including the tourist police stationed at the Waterfront, and Kuching North City Hall to ensure that safety is taken care of,” he told reporters at the launch of the Waterfront’s calendar of events here.

The Waterfront, managed by SEDC Sarawak, is among the top tourist attractions in the city.

On the 380m Waterfront extension undertaken by SEDC Sarawak, Wan Lizozman said that construction was progressing smoothly and it should be completed by December this year.
