KUCHING: A new commercial centre for Padawan, Kuching Central, is poised to become the next area of growth in the municipality.
This was stated by Batu Kawa State Assemblyman Tan Joo Phoi, during the official opening of the Shell retail station, Syarikat L.C. Makmur Shell Station at Mile 5 1/2, Penrissen Road, here yesterday.
The location of the Syarikat L.C. Makmur Shell Station at Mile 5 1/2, Penrissen Road was very strategic as it was cited at the centre of a new commercial zone, Tan said.
He said with the rapid development of residential commercial and industrial hubs especially the emergence of a new commercial zone, the “Kuching Central” the area will certainly become the most attractive area for business activities.
“Therefore, I must congratulate Syarikat L.C Makmur Management for their far-sightedness to invest in this lucrative industry which will also promote other business activities in this area,” he said.
He said the proprietor had taken the right move by investing in such business as in the present world entrepreneurship has become factor for growth and development.
“A country cannot develop just by having rich resources. Most of the countries in the world become developed because they were under pressure to develop their skills and entrepreneurship.
“Also, we know that the growth of a country like Malaysia is based on land, labour and capital, but entrepreneurship is becoming more important, especially in Sarawak, where we
have large land masses and very sparse population,” he said.
He said that despite the world economic crisis, the country had been very fortunate that it was not very seriously affected.
“Actually, our country is doing better. With the implementation of the First and Second Stimulus Projects, our country’s economy is recovering.
“Our government is doing its best to improve the rate of the employment in order to benefit the people through development of our own resources and encourage foreign investment and also the tourism industries,” he added.
Also present at the opening yesterday were Shell Timur Sdn Bhd’s Regional Retail Manager (Sarawak), Kenny Ku and its Territory Manager Retail (Kuching), Mohd. Khairuddin Mohd Nadzir.

Kuching eyes UNESCO World Heritage status:banana:

PETER SIBON

KUCHING: If things go as plan, Kuching city could well be the next heritage site in the country, following in the footsteps of Melaka and Penang which have been awarded the prestigious world heritage status by UNESCO. According to Minister of Urban Development and Tourism, Datuk Michael Manyin Jawong, Kuching city meets all the criteria set by the world governing body, UNESCO.
“However we are still at the preliminary stage and it will take some time for it to materialise.
In the case of Melaka and Penang it took them eight years to get the recognition from UNESCO.
“So to start with I have instructed the President of the Sarawak Tourism Federation (STF), Wee Hong Seng, to visit both Melaka and Penang to learn from their experiences on how to attain the prestigious status as world heritage sites,” Manyin said at a Heritage talk held at Sarawak Tourism Complex here Tuesday night.
He added that for the plan to materialise the people, especially those directly involved, must be pro-active and willing to work extra hard to get the prestigious status.
“It would really be a privilege if one day Kuching city is to be gazetted as a world heritage site as it would put Kuching city in the world tourism map.
“There will be strings of benefit from it. Among others it will enhance the value of Kuching city to attract tourists to come.
It will become a top destination for business ventures as well,” he said. Manyin said among the criteria set up by UNESCO to obtain the prestigious status are: unique universal value, unique culture of its ethnic groups, including food, places of interest and arts, and it must also have a rich historical background.
“Kuching city meets all the criteria as it has rich cultural and historical heritage, which started with the Brunei Sultanate, followed by the Brooke era, Japanese occupation, colonial rule and finally through our own independence,” he said.
He added that to be recognised as a world heritage site would also mean that any renovation to the historical buildings would have to be under UNESCO guidelines.
“It also means that it would cost more when renovating any historical building as it would have to follow the guidelines provided by UNESCO,” he said.
On another issue, Manyin said Sarawak would still be able to achieve its target of 3.4 million tourist arrivals to Sarawak this year based on its target to attract short-haul visitors.
“With better air connectivity from Singapore, we hope to get more people to visit Sarawak in the face of this global economic downturn,” he said, adding that the tourism sector was among the hardest hit by the downturn.
Meanwhile, Wee said the heritage of a country or destination could be leveraged to be a major product for tourism if it was well nurtured and its historical value was promoted as a subject of interest for tourists.
Present to give their talks on the world heritage sites of Melaka and Penang were Lawrence Loh and Madam Lye.

100 best posters for all to see
By SHARON LING

ART and design lovers in Kuching can enjoy an array of winning posters on display at Sarawak Museum’s Dewan Tun Abdul Razak.

The exhibition celebrates the winning designs from the 100 Best Posters competition held annually in Germany, Austria and Switzerland.

http://thestar.com.my/archives/2009/4/30/southneast/se_06poster1.jpg
Taking it in: University students viewing a striking poster on display in the exhibition.

The posters feature a variety of techniques used by the designers, including photographs, illustrations, collage and typographic forms.

The month-long exhibition was brought to Sarawak Museum by the German Embassy in Kuala Lumpur in conjunction with the German Days event in Kuching recently.

http://thestar.com.my/archives/2009/4/30/southneast/se_06poster2.jpg
Eye-catching: A visitor looking at an intriguing poster.

Chief Minister Tan Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud, who launched the event and opened the exhibition, said Sarawak would look at ways to strengthen cooperation with Germany, particularly in education and training.

He said that Germany was renowned for its technical education which could benefit Sarawak as the state sought to produce a skilled workforce for the Sarawak Corridor of Renewable Energy.

“I would love to see German-trained engineers and technicians in Sarawak,” he said.
Variety: Visitors walking around and viewing the posters on show.

German Ambassador to Malaysia Dr Gunter Gruber said the event was an opportunity for Germany and Sarawak to explore new areas of cooperation.

“I am confident that this event will lead to many other areas of cooperation in business, science, education, culture and tourism,” he said.

“It will bring Germany and Sarawak closer and allow Sarawakians to see what Germany has to offer,” he added.

The exhibition will be on until May 25. Admission is free.

Melting pot of rice-growing cultures

KUCHING: Cultural troupes from three rice-producing countries will add colour to this year’s World Harvest Festival at the Sarawak Cultural Village near here.

To perform at the 11th annual festival, which kicks off on May 23, are Latvia’s Ceiruleits, India’s Darshati and Sri Lanka’s Ranranga Dance Academy.

Sarawak Cultural Village general manager Jane Lian Labang said the participation of the three foreign troupes would enable Sarawak to share with them something in common – the traditions and rituals of rice cultivators.

She said the locals could meet the foreign performers during the interactive music and dance workshops.

One of the festival’s highlights is the Miss Fair and Lovely beauty pageant grand finals on May 24. Fifteen finalists are vying for the harvest queen crown.

An open-air drama based on the Iban legend will be staged around the village’s man-made lake before the beauty contest.

Jane said other festival activities would include a world harvest craft and food bazaar, cultural concerts and an ironman competition.

She said the ironman finalists would be picked during the “climb-up” of the legendary Mount Santubong. The 12 will compete in a series of games, like blowpipe shooting, rafting and weight endurance.

Rainforest music festival to unravel another rousing show

WITH a record number of more than 22,000 revellers attending last year’s Rainforest World Music Festival (RWMF), Sarawak Tourism Board (STB) is working hard to ensure this year’s festival continues to have the same magical attraction.

STB has already enlisted bands from the US, Portugal, Tanzania, New Zealand, Poland, France and South Korea to perform at the 12th edition of the festival which will be staged at the picturesque Sarawak Cultural Village (SCV) in Kuching, Sarawak, from July 10 to 12.

There will also be performances by Malaysian bands, including from Sarawak, and these bands will add musical variety to the festival.
Crowd pullers: Members of the band AkashA.

The bands that will perform are Zawose Family Africa from Tanzania, Noreummachi (South Korea), Moana & The Tribe (New Zealand), Red Chamber (Canada/China), Jouhiorkesteri (Finland), Muzsikas (Hungary), Inti Illimani (Chile), Jeff & The Vida (US), Dazkarieh (Portugal), Oudaden (Morocco), Poum Tchak (France), Asika (Malaysia), Sekaa Jaya Jenggala (Indonesia), The Nicholas Orchestra (Poland), Lan-E Tuyang (Sarawak, Malaysia), Kinabalu Merdu Sound (Kota Kinabalu, Malaysia) and AkashA (Malaysia).

This new and exciting edition of RWMF promises festival goers an interesting mix of world music beats from the bands which will showcase some unique instruments.

Revellers can enrich their festival experience by participating in jam sessions at workshops every afternoon at the various ethnic houses in SCV, or by visiting the Rainforest World Craft Bazaar (RWCB), which will be held simultaneously with the festival.

Craft-making workshops will be held at RWCB, besides the exhibition and sale of the crafts.

Inquiries on RWCB can be sent to crafthub@gmailc.om and muheidi@pc.jaring.my.

There will be other stalls offering souvenirs and a wide range of food and drinks at the festival venue.

The fun will continue at the concerts every evening that last until midnight.

The concerts will be held at the main stage and a smaller stage at the foot of the legendary Mount Santubong, with both having the luxury of the rainforest as the backdrop.

Still going strong after 12 years, RWMF has come a long way in making a name for itself among world music followers from all corners of the world.

Last year’s record showed that more than 60% of the festival goers were from outside Malaysia, making it the best tourism attraction for Sarawak.

It is acknowledged as one of Malaysia’s best tourism icons and is listed under events for promotion by Tourism Malaysia worldwide.

RWMF has gained international recognition by winning prestigious awards like the Pacific Asia Travel Associations Gold Award in 2006, and recently the Aseanta Award of Excellence 2009 in the Best Asean Marketing and Promotional Campaign category for last year’s RWMF.

Festival tickets have been available online from January this year.

The tickets are priced at RM90 for a one-day pass and RM250 for a three-day pass for adults while tickets for children aged between three and 12 years is priced at RM45 for a one-day pass and RM100 for a three-day pass.

The tickets are available at www.ticketcharge.com.my and STB is now offering an exclusively-designed t-shirt to those who purchase two three-day passes. The offer is of only 500 t-shirts within a limited period.

Sale of the three-day passes will be on until June 26, and only one-day passes will be availabe after that date.

Tickets at the gate during the festival dates will be sold at RM100 for adults and RM55 for children for a one-day pass.

STB is encouraging festival goers to buy their tickets early to avoid a last-minute rush.

STB is honoured to have Malaysia’s sole satellite TV broadcaster Astro as the exclusive media partner. RWMF 2009 is supported by the Ministry of Tourism, Malaysia, and Ministry of Urban Development and Tourism, Sarawak, and endorsed by Tourism Malaysia.

Details and updates are available at the www.rainforestmusic-borneo.com website, which is enjoying an average of 7,000 hits daily.

There are daily flights to Kuching from Kuala Lumpur and Kota Kinabalu on Malaysia Airlines and AirAsia, and from Singapore on AirAsia, Silk Air and Tiger Airways. Royal Brunei Airlines has regular flights from Bandar Seri Begawan to Kuching.

Kesesakan Jambatan Batu Kawa bakal berkurangan
Oleh Matzidi Dris
mzidi@bharian.com.my

RM16 juta diperoleh lebar laluan jadi dua lorong sebelum akhir tahun

Spiral stairs for cinema:banana:

By Ezekiel Lee Zhiang Yang

20 Apr – Spiral stairs and family karaokes – that's what one can expect from The Spring Shopping Centre, touted as the largest lifestyle mall in the state, when the 8-screen MBO Kuching opens in June 2009. With the abundance of undeveloped land in Sarawak, MBO Kuching is definitely going for the fancy stuff.

The proposed waiting area or cinema lounge where a spiral staircase is planned

At a press conference on 20 March 2009, mall execs revealed that the "very different" entertainment floor (second and final floor) is going into its final phase and leading it is the 8-screen MBO cineplex, not to mention a karaoke joint.

A casual survey with locals such as taxi drivers and shop assistants indicated that the development is indeed an exciting one for Kuching residents, as the town has not had a new cinema in more than 10 years since Star Cineplex opened in 1997 at Medan Pelita.

Mall leasing head Andy Song said: "There will be multiple accesses to the second floor during and after operational hours. Cinema and karaoke patrons will have exclusive access from the lift lobby and staircase which will remain open after the mall's normal hours. As global and local market contract under this current economic crisis it is important to be able to create value innovation and remain relevant for growing long term market share".

http://www.cinema.com.my/images/news/2009/7mbo_kuching_stairs00.jpg

MBO Cinemas Marketing Manager Cheah Gim Hin teased: "We are going for a 3D screen as well – but one thing for sure is that we are expected to have the largest four-way hall (sound system) in the country when it opens." Chief Operations Officer Ikmal Nizam Ariffin added: "We are a family-oriented business and the deco concept behind our latest outlet in Kuching will be on the magical, timeless feel of over 100 years of film history.

The cinema chain is understood to be opening another two outlets this year, with MBO Kuching being its first venture into the East Malaysian market.

Can u guys imagine wats MBO has offer to kuchingites..imagine urself through wat im highlight there..

New compactor trucks to collect rubbish
The Borneo Post
By Ting Tieng Hee

KUCHING: Trienekens (Sarawak) Sdn Bhd has been praised for taking the initiative to improve its services by investing in new compactor trucks that come with the latest technology.

Kuching City South Council (MBKS) mayor James Chan said yesterday the city’s waste management contractor was not only providing the people with good services but always taking initiatives to upgrade them.

He said the latest model of compactor truck would help to reduce public complaints on the leakage of leachate from the current garbage trucks and enable more efficient rubbish collection.

“Trinekens does not fear changing its trucks when they are due, unlike other contractors who will continue to use their trucks until they are in bad shape,” he told reporters after witnessing thelaunch of the new compactor truck at the council’s compound here.

He said the council was proud to have Trienekens as its partner and hoped the company would buy more new trucks to give better service to the people of Kuching.

The waste management company has recently bought three such trucks for RM1.5 million to serve MBKS, Kuching City North Commission (DBKU) and Padawan Municipal Council (PMC).

It has also placed orders for five more trucks and by the end of the year would have eight of them.

Trienekens managing director Gerhard Aulbert said the purchase of the trucks was part of the company’s long-term improvement plan to upgrade the capacity of its collection fleet.

It was also to ensure that the quality and efficiency of its collection services is enhanced periodically for the benefit of the public and the cleanliness of Kuching City.

“This is a truck with very unique technology and is the first of its kind introduced here as well as the whole of Malaysia,” said Aulbert.

“It’s not easy for the company to achieve this because if you look at this type of lift axle system, you can’t see it on the roads today,” he added.

For a start, one of the compactor trucks will be servicing areas with high population density and commercial activities located in and around the city centre, BDC and Third Mile beginning next week.

“We are collecting about 500 tonnes of rubbish in Kuching daily and that volume would inflate during festive periods,” he said.

Aulbert said with the commissioning of the new trucks, the frequency of collection (twice weekly) would still be maintained.

“The change in the technology has nothing to do with frequency. This is more related to the strategy and the programme for waste management,” he said. He said the main objective of creating a new truck system was to improve the quality of the rubbish collection services.

To another question, Aulbert said the company’s standards were high and the rates for services provided were reasonable.

“Due to these high standards, the costs must be different when compared to uncontrolled dump sites,” he explained.

Aulbert said it was seldom possible for a company to provide the best services with the lowest prices.

He said the reasonable rates was also mainly due to the rapid increase in the population of Kuching which has since grown from 500,000 to more than 700,000 people.

“We have to distribute more bins and serve new areas and that has an impact on the payment but if we look at the specific costs when compared to other councils, it is still reasonable,” he said.

Aulbert is also hoping the new trucks can perform with higher efficiency as expected and the company would monitor the progress of the trucks’ performance.

The new ten-wheeler compactor truck with air suspension lift axle can carry a maximum of 15 tonnes of solid waste compared to the present trucks which can only take in about 10 tonnes.

It is fitted with an automatic bin lifter which allows for faster and efficient door-to-door collection time and the lifter is also lower, enabling it to lift bigger bins containing bulky wastes from sites with high volume.

It has an additional leachate tank that can store up to 300 litres of excessive waste water from inside the compactor truck to prevent it from spilling to the roads and causing foul smell.

The truck is also fitted with body/tailgate seal which minimises fluid loss and overflowing during collection of wet waste.

Despite its bigger capacity, the truck body is 15cm shorter compared to the older ones, allowing easier maneuvering in narrow roads.

Other advantages are that the compactor system operates more quietly and efficiently while using lesser power and its smoke emission is at a low and safe level, allowing the collection to be clean and pollution-free. These technologies contribute to higher operational efficiency and better handling of solid waste from point of collection.

With strong support and cooperation from the public to maintain a good level of waste management habits, it will result in better quality of living for all city residents and cleanliness of the environment.

75 percent of space in Plaza Merdeka sold

An artist impression of the interior of Plaza Merdeka.

By Peter Sibon

KUCHING: 75 percent of space in Plaza Merdeka has been sold. The remaining 25 percent will be sold in due time, Steve Ng Plaza Merdeka Managing Director said yesterday.

Excavation and demolition works involving Sesco and Telekom will continue at the site until middle of this month. Ground work is expected to begin in October.

On the half-road closing near Padang Merdeka, Ng said it was a temporary measure and will be re-opened once the project is completed in 2011.

However, the total cost of construction would be increased by 20 percent due to the rising cost of building materials. The original cost of the project will remain the same, he later said.

The RM350 million project was launched by Chief Minister Pehin Sri Haji Abdul Taib Mahmud on May 8, last year.

Ng said the development of Plaza Merdeka was intended to be a part of the revitalisation of Kuching.

The Shopping Mall boasts a gross area of over half a million sqft with a nett lettable area of approximately 350,000 sqft. The discerning feature of the mall will be its huge 9,000 sqft - four storey high garden podium for promotions and exhibitions. There will be a department store, supermarket, designer stores, tech centre, coffee shops as well as a food court.

There is ample car parking spread over six acres on levels B2 & B3 with multiple access points to the mall. The area traffic flow will also be revised to alleviate congestion and improve the flow of traffic through the district.

Complementing the mall is a 290 room boutique business and tourist hotel.

The hotel, situated above the mall will have a panoramic view of the river, waterfront esplanade, Astana, the new DUN building and Fort Margherita on one side and the Merdeka Padang and Sarawak Museum on the other.

It will be housed over eight levels and will feature designer interiors.

This modern, state-of-the-art shopping mall and hotel within a classical building façade is designed by Yolanda David Reyes (YDR design, Manila Philippines). The project is undertaken by Rakyat Elite Sdn Bhd in partnership with Sarawak Incorporated Sdn Bhd.

Corporate's the silver lining for Jetstar Asia
17 April 2009

Jetstar Asia is aggressively going after the corporate market as business travellers trade down to low fare carriers. Yeoh Siew Hoon catches up with CEO Chong Phit Lian.

Chong Phit Lian, chief executive of Jetstar Asia (pictured above), is someone who tends to see the sunnier side of life, much like the orange colour that is her airline’s signature.

“When business is tough, there are more opportunities,” she says at our meeting at Changi’s Terminal 1 where I swear she both works and lives, and never leaves.

Clad in her orange signature Jetstar Asia jacket, Phit Lian had just emerged from a meeting that had obviously had a positive outcome.

She continues, “We are getting a lot of corporate customers who would otherwise not have traveled with us and we want to maximize that opportunity. Business executives still need to travel and do their business deals, they still need to be mobile.”

As such, her airline has been working overtime, getting into the corporate sector, and has launched a corporate programme which allows executives to make one free change and then, as many changes as they want for a S$15 fee.

“In the past, they were reluctant to travel with us because they thought making changes was a hassle but we have now made it easier and possible,” says Chong.

Popular business routes are Jakarta, Hong Kong, Vietnam, Bangkok and Manila.

“We see this as an opportunity to get into the corporate market in a bigger way. As you know, once someone has tried a product and if they like the experience, they will stick to you.”

The airline is also looking at additional flights to Kuching and Bangkok, she says although this conversation took place before last week’s debacle in Pattaya which saw the ASEAN Summit being scrapped and political leaders being whisked off home in a public humiliation for the Thai government, and the subsequent outbreak of street protests in Bangkok.

Frequencies to Bali will also increase under its parent Jetstar network which last month announced new connections to Singapore from its Perth-Denpasar, Bali and Perth-Jakarta services with special JetSaver light fares starting from US$18.

The Singapore services, starting from July 14, 2009, will follow the current four times weekly Perth-Denpasar and three times weekly Perth-Jakarta services and then return to terminate in Perth.

Jetstar said the new international service was aligned with its near Asian growth strategy which aims to develop Perth as the hub for Australia/Asia connections, with Jetstar CEO Bruce Buchanan saying the flights would “double Jetstar’s existing capacity into Singapore from Perth”.

There is no denying that overall business has been impacted at Jetstar Asia however. Loads, Chong says, are in the low 70s “but because of our very aggressive promotions, we are able to maintain improvements though we are slightly below our targets”.

“Many industries are affected by this economic crisis. Companies are still spending but everyone’s got to look for cost savings which is why we see big opportunities for low fare carriers.”

She is also optimistic that all the efforts being made by every economic bloc and governments to stimulate the economy will yield results eventually.

Meantime, you’ve got to do what it takes to manage costs, reduce wastage and use technology to help drive efficiencies, she says.

“It is interesting times and it’s not easy, but days will go by and business will come back.”

Sidang DUN Sarawak: Projek tebatan banjir RM2b dijangka siap 2010
Laporan Misiah Taib
misiah@bharian.com.my

Kuching's new landmark

The new state legislative assembly complex at Pangkalan Sapi is a symbol of pride.

KUCHING: Sitting atop a hill on the banks of Sungai Sarawak at Pangkalan Sapi, one can hardly miss the city's latest architectural icon, the new state legislative assembly complex with its distinctive umbrella-shaped roof.

The RM300 million landmark, which can accommodate 108 state assemblymen with their own office each, is scheduled to be opened by Yang di-Pertuan Agong Tuanku Mizan Zainal Abidin on July 27.

It will first be used for the Conference of Rulers on July 28 and 29.

Opening the current sitting of the assembly early last week, Yang Dipertua Negeri Tun Abang Muhammad Salahuddin Abang Barieng said the modern nine-storey complex, combining the state's architectural heritage with state-of-the-art system, symbolised the peace and harmony enjoyed by the people.

"We are proud of the development as it marks a new chapter in state democracy and symbolises unity among the various ethnic groups."

The current building in Petra Jaya, was constructed in 1976 to accommodate 48 assemblymen. Now, 33 years later, the number has increased to 71.

Assembly Speaker Datuk Seri Mohd Asfia Awang Nassar likened the new complex to the Petronas Twin Towers in Kuala Lumpur and the Sydney Opera House, saying it was a landmark.

Located on a 43ha site on the waterfront, the building is equipped with intelligent building automation systems, multimedia communication facilities and environmentally friendly features.

Other notable features include a parade ground, a 1,000-seat state banquet hall and 315 parking bays. -- Bernama

More buses to ply Kuching
Tuesday May 19, 2009

KUCHING: The city’s public transport is expected to improve when three more companies start operating stage bus services in three months.

State Tourism and Urban Development Minister Datuk Michael Manyin said the Commercial Vehicles Licensing Board had issued new licences to City Public Link Sdn Bhd, Jepak Holdings Sdn Bhd and Biaramas Sdn Bhd to start the stage bus service.

“With the new operators coming in, we will be able to provide better public transport service,” he said at the state assembly yesterday.

On the proposed RM530mil Kuching centralised waste water management project, Manyin said work was on schedule for it to be completed in late 2012. He said the project would help to improve the city’s overall environment.

E-mart, well looks like a big wet market or warehouse. Goods sold in there are pretty much the same...price range wise not very much cheaper also. Almost the same as most supermarkets in the city.

Only E-mart supermarket itself is air-condition but the rest is not.

Tycoon decides not to build Bintangor TAR college

KUCHING: Sarawak tycoon Tan Sri Ting Pek Khiing has decided not to build the proposed Tunku Abdul Rahman (TAR) College branch campus in Bintangor in the central region.

Ting had earlier promised to donate land and pay for 50% of the construction cost of the campus if Sarawak United People’s Party-(SUPP) nominated Barisan Nasional candidate Ding Kuong Hing won the Sarikei seat in last year’s parliamentary election.

Ding beat DAP’s Dr Wong Hua Seh and won by a 51-vote majority in the five-way contest.

However, Ting said last week that he would discontinue the proposed branch project. The announcement was criticised by the DAP, which also accused the SUPP of failing to keep its election promise.

The DAP challenged Ding to step down to take responsibility for the matter.

In response, Ding said he would resign as MP if the DAP could build the TAR College branch campus. Otherwise, the opposition should shut up, he said.

SUPP president Tan Sri Dr George Chan Hong Nam said Ting had pulled out of the project as the tycoon had been accused of bribery by the DAP in an election petition filed by Dr Wong against Ding.

Ding won the petition.

Dr Chan said the DAP’s actions had discouraged Ting to carry out the project. He blamed the opposition for “putting a spanner in the wheel and jeopardising the project.”

Jambatan Sungai Sadong RM200j dibina akhir 2009
Oleh Micheal Sering
bhnews@bharian.com.my

Naim plans eyeing major infrastructure and property projects in Sarawak
By JACK WONG

KUCHING: Construction company Naim Holdings Bhd is eyeing major infrastructure and property development projects in Sarawak Corridor of Renewable Energy (SCORE).

Senior vice-president/director Ahmad Abu Bakar said Naim was in talks with state agencies and other interested parties on several development proposals within SCORE.

“However, discussions are still at the preliminary stage,” he told StarBiz.

SCORE will be driven by the development of Sarawak’s abundant hydro and coal resources to generate electricity to power energy-intensive industries, like alunimium smelters, to be set up with the regional economic development belt.

Sarawak is now building the proposed Murum dam – which could generate about 900MW - in the upper Rejang Basin in central Sarawak. Murum is located upstream of the on-going Bakun hydroelectric dam project capable of generating up to 2,400MW.

Several other hydro dam projects have also been planned in the upper reaches of the Rejang River.

To provide accessibility to these proposed dam sites, Sarawak Second Finance Minister Datuk Wong Soon Koh said recently that six major road projects, with a combined length of 403km, within SCORE would be built.

The design for the access road from Jalan Bakun extended to Murum has been completed while other proposed access roads are still being designed.

Meanwhile, Naim was close to securing two road projects worth RM250mil in Sarawak, said Ahmad. The projects are funded by the federal government under the stimulus package.

He said Naim had an outstanding net order book of RM2.5bil that could keep the group busy in the next five years.

Its ongoing projects include a RM630mil contract from Syarikat Perumahan Negara Sdn Bhd to build some 5,000 residential homes in Kuching, Samarahan and Miri divisions, the RM310mil Bengoh dam near here, RM150mil phase one, Kuching flood mitigation project in Matang (the entire project is estimated to cost RM1.6bil), a RM188mil road project in Sibu and the proposed RM90mil Sarawak Islamic Centre project here.

Ahmad said Naim sold 633 houses and shophouses worth RM165mil last year. For the 2009 first quarter, it raked in some RM26mil from the sales of 103 such properties.

“Our target this year is to sell 800 units, 80% of them residential homes. Unsold houses (mostly high end), commerical units and detached lots are worth about RM20mil,’’ he said, adding that the company was carrying out various promotion activities to attract buyers.

Ahmad said Naim would save at least RM5mil this year through a series of cost-cutting measures introduced last year.

Naim posted a group net profit of RM83mil on a turnover of RM524mil for the financial year ended Dec 31, 2008 compared with RM80mil and RM646mil respectively in 2007.

For the first quarter ended March 31, Naim chalked up a group net profit of RM17mil on revenue of RM95mil.

Naim’s 36%-owned Dayang Enterprise Holdings Bhd contributed RM22mil in net profit to the group last year.

Rulers Conference in Kuching to have special events

KUCHING: The state will hold a special one-day regatta in conjunction with the 217th Rulers Conference here in July.

Yang di-Pertuan Agong Tuanku Mizan Zainal Abidin and Raja Permaisuri Agong Tuanku Nur Zahirah along with the other Malay rulers and Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak are expected to attend.

The July 27 event will feature four 30-paddler longboat races and a powerboat race.

“There will be an inter-village longboat race, a new event we are introducing at the request of villagers.

“The other longboat categories are inter-agency, inter-division and inter-state,” said the event’s co-organising chairperson Rodziah Morshidi at the Resident’s Office here.

She said that participation in the races would be limited to the first 18 entries.

In addition, she said there would be a procession of 20 decorated boats along Sarawak River at night followed by a concert.

There will also be side events, including craft and entrepreneur exhibitions with 120 stalls, and a tourism expo.

Meanwhile, the annual Sarawak Regatta will be held from July 31 to Aug 2.

Earlier, at a simple ceremony, Rodziah, the outgoing Kuching Resident, handed over her duties to successor Liew Jiu Ming.

Liew was a Public Works Department engineer prior to his appointment as Kuching Resident while Rodziah has been appointed as the new the Samarahan Resident.

Liew said the appointment opened a new chapter in his career and that he would do his best to serve the people.

“I will use of my technical knowledge to ensure that development projects are implemented smoothly,” he said.

More landed property in Sarawak

KUCHING: The Housing and Local Government Ministry has agreed to develop more landed property in Sarawak in the Tenth Malaysia Plan (10MP).

Its deputy Minister Datuk Seri Lajim Ukin said the ministry had also agreed to build low-cost flats for rental under the People’s Housing Programme in Sarawak’s major towns based on demand only.

“We will also no longer build flats in the small towns but will instead build more houses (landed property) for the buyers to enjoy greater comfort in a bigger space.

“Besides that, flats for rental will only be built as a transit in the major towns, especially for workers who come from the other districts,” he said after paying a courtesy call on Sarawak Housing Minister Datuk Amar Abang Johari Tun Openg, here on Tuesday.

He said the transit units would be rented out to those who could not afford to buy a house yet or were waiting for their house to be ready.

Last month, Abang Johari said that there was poor response to the flats for rent in Sarawak as the people in the state preferred landed property.

With regard to the 10MP, Lajim said the Sarawak Housing Ministry would draw up a plan to be submitted to the federal government on the state’s needs.

Meanwhile, Abang Johari said the federal government had agreed to focus on setting up housing projects in Mukah and Bintulu, located in the Sarawak Corridor of Renewable Energy.

On the implementation of 1,108 projects in Sarawak under the first and second economic stimulus package, he said the allocations had been channelled to the state government for the projects to be carried out within two years.

He said four projects, two in Kuching and one each in Bintulu and Samarahan, had taken off. — Bernama.

Speaker DUN Sarawak, Datuk Seri Mohd.

Tambah istimewa, semua ADUN disediakan bilik pejabat masing-masing.

Another flyover for Kuching in six months:banana:
http://www.theborneopost.com

KUCHING: Another flyover will be built in Kuching, this time at the Jalan Tun Jugah - Jalan Song junction in the direction of the airport to Kuching and vice versa.

Global Upline Sdn Bhd, who had recently completed the Kenyalang Interchange and the new Airport Road, will undertake the work as continuation of the overall road upgrading along Jalan Tun Jugah. The whole project is estimated to cost RM75 million.

Apart from the flyover, which will be a dual-carriageway, the existing 2.1km stretch of Jalan Tun Jugah between Kenyalang Interchange and Simpang Tiga will be widened to three- and four-lane carriageway in each direction.

Preparatory work will commence middle of this month, while work at the flyover will start immediately after the Rulers Conference in Kuching at the end of July.

Global Upline advisor Tan Sri Ting Pek Khing said the project will take six to eight months to complete.

“(During the construction period) motorists are advised to avoid using Jalan Tun Jugah-Jalan Song intersection, especially during rush hours, otherwise there will be traffic jam.

“Just give us six months, then the cars can (use the) fly over,” he told reporters yesterday, after briefing Chief Minister Pehin Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud on the project at Four Points by Sheraton hotel.

Taib, in his brief comments, said he was confident that Global Upline could complete the project in the soonest time possible. He also said the project, once completed, would improve the flow of traffic there.

According to a statement released by Global Upline, Jalan Tun Jugah is the main gateway to Kuching city as it formed part of the Sarawak first trunk road linking the city with other major towns in the state, as well as the gateway to the ‘outside world’ as it is the main access road to the Kuching International Airport (KIA).

Despite the upgrading of Jalan Tun Jugah-Jalan Song junction from the old roundabout into a signalised junction some years ago, it was never able to cope with the traffic volumes as it still experienced long delays in all the four directions during rush hours, it added.

“With the recent completion of Kenyalang Interchange, it becomes very apparent that the section of Jalan Tun Jugah between that Interchange and Jalan Upland is grossly under capacity, especially at its signalised junction with Jalan Song, with traffic jam the norm even during non-rush hours.

“During the morning and rush hours, delays of up to 20 minutes in all four lanes are common. It is obvious that traffic capacity at the junction is incompatible with other sections of the road and needs urgent improvement,” it said.

Although the contract period for the project is 12 months, Global Upline said it would endeavour to complete work in shortest time possible and to minimise any obstruction during the construction period.

On another development, Ting said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak will be in Kuching to declare open the KIA runway and official opening of Four Points by Sheraton hotel next Wednesday (June 17).

Both projects were undertaken by Global Upline.

Keuntungan SEDC diramal merosot

Pelancong asing kagumi Kompleks DUN baru

KIA runway extension marks new era for city
By Lee Ya Yun

KUCHING: The city is now open to more opportunities following the completion of Borneo’s longest airport runway here.

Global Upline Sdn Bhd advisor Tan Sri Ting Pek Khiing yesterday announced the completion of the runway extension at Kuching International Airport (KIA) and said it marked a new era for the city.

“Kuching has a very bright tourism future now. The completion marks Kuching’s international standard as a tourist destination because any flight from any country can land at KIA,” he said.
He pointed out that the extension which took four years to build was something that Sarawakians should be proud of.

“The 3,800-metre-long runway is the longest in Borneo. It is even longer than Brunei’s. The runway allows the landing of Airbus 380,” he said.
He added that the company is constructing the extension of the runway at Kota Kinabalu International Airport.

The length of the runway before the extension was 2,400 metres. The total cost of the construction including terminal building and runway is RM800 million.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak will officiate at the opening of the runway extension on June 17, said Ting in a press conference held at Four Points by Sheraton Kuching here.

“The PM will tour the runway on June 17. We want to let him see how grand the runway extension is,” he said.

He explained that as the area used to be swampy, the construction was even more complicated.

“We need to ensure that the runway won’t sink and is safe to use,” he said.

He added that the runway was already tested and fixed for several aircraft to land.

Najib is expected to arrive at the KIA at 4pm next Wednesday to declare the runway open.

He will then proceed to Four Points for the grand opening of the hotel.

On another matter, Ting advised road users to be patient when the construction of the flyover at the Jalan Tun Jugah - Jalan Song junction begins.

“Motorists are advised to avoid using the Jalan Tun Jugah - Jalan Song especially during the peak hours. There are many alternative ways,” he said.

He said when the construction begins, trees along the road would be cut.

The flyover was scheduled to be completed in six months, he pointed out.

Also present at the press conference were Global Upline assistant managing director Bobby Ting and Kuching South City mayor James Chan.

Ministry wants Gawai placed on world map

KUCHING: The Ministry of Information, Communications, Arts and Culture wants to put Gawai Dayak on the world map as one of Malaysia’s national celebrations.

Its minister Datuk Seri Utama Dr Rais Yatim said yesterday that the government wanted greater international recognition for Gawai Dayak to showcase the richness of the Malaysian culture.

He said it was for this reason that his ministry was looking at several approaches to raise the stature of Gawai Dayak along with other major Malaysian cultural celebrations.

“Maybe in the years to come we change the venue, no longer do we hold it in the stadium or on a field. Maybe we can hold it in a theatre like Istana Budaya, where guests can appreciate our culture more intimately through music and performances.

“At the same time, we can look at villages in Sarawak where we can hold the celebration in situ. It will be good to bring the people from the towns to these kampungs,” he told a gathering of senior journalists and editors here.

“For next year, maybe we can celebrate Gawai Dayak and Sabah’s Pesta Kaamatan together. So we are exploring all these possibilities. There will be a lot of experimenting and trials.”

He assured that the ministry would strive to maintain the authenticity of the events and similarly, he believed that the celebrations should be a platform for performers of traditional music and dances to showcase their culture.

Rais emphasised that the focus of the celebrations was on the 1Malaysia concept.

He explained: “The essence of 1Malaysia is love of unity.”

Meanwhile, he announced that the Heritage Department would hold the second poetry recital event in Niah Caves this year.

He said the inaugural event was a success last year and the department would continue to bring members of the international community here for it.

Also present at the gathering yesterday were Deputy Minister of Information, Communication, Arts and Culture Datuk Joseph Salang, Information director general Datuk Abdullah Morad and State Information director Resat Salleh.

Sarawak aims to lead in hydropower energy

KUALA LUMPUR: Sarawak hopes to become a major hydropower player in the region when the Sarawak Corridor of Renewable Energy (SCORE) is fully developed by 2030.

State planning unit advisor Chang Ngee Hui said SCORE aimed to get RM334bil worth of investment by 2030 from the private sector, government-linked companies and foreign investors.

“Sarawak has abundant natural resources that can be utilised as renewable energy and at this moment, we are focusing on hydropower projects such as in Bakun and Baram.

“However, we will assist any party that wants to explore other types of renewable energy such as solar, wind or natural gas,” he said yesterday at the seminar on business opportunities at SCORE.

SCORE is located in central Sarawak and stretches 320km along the coast from Tanjung Manis to Samalaju, and extends into the surrounding areas and the hinterland.

Chief Minister Tan Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud had said 24 projects with a proposed investment total of RM80bil had been approved by the Regional Economic Development Authority (RECODA) to be implemented in the next five years.

Taib, who is also state Finance Minister, also said the projects would generate more than 20,000 jobs, not including those created in the construction of basic infrastructure and factories.

“The biggest projects approved are an aluminium smelter plant in Mukah and a polysilicon manufacturing plant within SCORE. The others are at various stages,” he said.

Taib also said RECODA had spent about RM1bil in providing the basic infrastructure in SCORE since its formation.

Recoda spearheads SCORE’s development, management and promotions, and serves as a one-stop agency to facilitate all investment activities in SCORE.

Meanwhile, the new Borneo Convention Centre in Kuching is scheduled to open by October and will in November host the International Energy Week 2009, themed Energising sustainable future-business opportunities in SCORE.

All set for B747 historic landing:ohno:

KUCHING: A B747 aircraft with a full load of passengers onboard will make a historic landing at the Kuching International Airport here tomorrow. The jumbo jet, from Kuala Lumpur, is expected to touch down at 4.40pm, shortly after Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak has toured the extended airport runway.

“The runway, measuring 3,800m, is the longest in Borneo,” Global Upline Sdn Bhd adviser Tan Sri Ting Pek Khiing said yesterday.

Global Upline is the turnkey contractor of the RM850mil extension project. The airport terminal building has earlier been upgraded and extended.

“The runway can now take the Airbus 380,” Ting said, adding that Najib would receive a certificate from the Department of Civil Aviation to mark the event.

The certificate will then be handed over to acting Transport Minister Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai.

Ting said Najib would also open Global Upline’s Four Points by Sheraton Hotel near the airport.

On the RM760mil extension and upgrading project for the Kota Kinabalu Airport runway and terminal two building, Ting said it would be completed in 10 months.

Global Upline is also the contractor for a similar project at the Labuan Airport.

The RM360mil project is also nearing completion.

Turut hadir, Timbalan Pengarah KPDNKK Sarawak, Mohd.

Gambier Street esplanade project to begin this month
By Puvaneswary Devindran

KUCHING: The transformation of the former wet market at Gambier Street into an esplanade, an extension of the existing waterfront, will begin this month.

Kuching City North Commission Datuk Bandar Mohamad Atei Abang Medaan said the tender for the RM7 million beautification project has already been given out.

“Hopefully (it will be) completed by the end of the year. The beautification process is quite slow, but what we need to put up first are the facilities,” he told reporters here yesterday.

Atei said the demolition of the vacant building alongside the banks of the Sarawak river would be carried out soon, but assured that no shops on the other side of Gambier Street would be affected.

He said the stretch for the extension of the waterfront measures slightly over one km and added that plans to beautify the area had been in place for quite some time.

State funds, said Atei, would be used to carry out the project, while DBKU would act as the implementer.

He said the project would be good for everyone and believed that it should be carried out immediately.

“The slower we are at doing this, the more problems it will cause,” he said referring to past controversies surrounding the demolition of the historical market, which was built during the Brooke era in 1935.

The former Gambier Street Market site used to house hundreds of hawkers right up to Ban Hock Wharf.

The hawkers have relocated to Stutong Market in Tabuan Jaya, leaving the old market building vacant since June last year.

Last year, Chief Minister Pehin Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud said that the esplanade would be built to turn the once “unorganised part of the old days by the riverbanks into a scenic recreational place”.

He said the area should have a lot of trees so that people could stroll all day, even when it was sunny.

Taib said, once completed, the esplanade would stretch from in front of the Hilton Kuching to Ban Hock Wharf, as well as across the river to ensure both riverbanks would be developed beautifully into popular recreational spots for city dwellers and visitors.

Meanwhile, on a separate issue, Atei urged residents not to engage in open burning during this period of hot temperatures.

“We expect the haze to occur during this hot weather and there is a general tendency in our area to do open burning. Please, this is the time to stop this,” he said. Although Kuching’s skyline still appeared to be clear, he said, it did not mean the people should take this for granted.

He said the situation could grow worse if those in Kalimantan and Sumatra, Indonesia began open burning.

He called on residents in the DBKU area to fully utilise their garbage collection service instead of resorting to burning their waste.

KIA, Borneo’s longest airport runway, ready

KUCHING: Kuching International Airport (KIA) is the only airport in East Malaysia and the third airport in the country with the capacity to accommodate Airbus 380 landing.
Global Upline Sdn Bhd advisor Tan Sri Ting Pek Khiing told reporters this yesterday before a tour of the KIA extended runway which will be declared open by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak tomorrow.

The runway is now 3,780 metres long. It measured 2,454m previously. Construction took four years to complete and incurred RM800 million in cost.

“KIA is one of the three airports in Malaysia that caters for Airbus 380. The other two airports are Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) and Langkawi International Airport,” he said.
He said Kota Kinabalu International Airport (KKIA) would be next and that works to upgrade it by Global Upline were ongoing and should be completed in eight to 10 months’ time.

Ting said yesterday that a fully loaded MAS 747 would be the first aircraft to land on the extended runway at 4.45pm tomorrow.

According to Ting, the runway complies fully with international requirements that include visual aids such as glide path, localiser, precision approach light, runway and taxiway lighting and signs.

He said construction was not easy because it involved transforming a swampy area.

“We have to remove unsuitable soil and filled the area layer by layer. The filling was around 60 feet to 100 feet … in some places almost 10 storeys high.

“One layer is about eight inches high, we have to compact the soil to eight inches before we put on another layer. It is just like making ‘kek lapis’. This is the reason it took us so long time to complete the project,” he said.

He said it took some 2,000 workers and 600 trucks moving everyday throughout the work period to complete the project.

The extension project used 12 million cubic metres of suitable soil to fill up the swampy area and soils were transported from Landeh at 10th Mile, some 25km from KIA.

He said the completion of the runway extension had proven yet again the ability of Global Upline in handling difficult and challenging tasks.

In fact, he said, at one time the government wanted to move the airport from the current site because the area was swampy and that any extension works might encounter great difficulty.

“Many debates went on last time because any extension was considered not feasible. The government did think to move the airport to 50km away from Kuching town.

“But Global Upline had taken a brave decision to tell the government that we could do it. I am happy to tell you that now KIA can last for another 100 years or more,” he said proudly.

Ting also revealed yesterday that a highway would be built to ease traffic flow in KIA area.

According to him, the highway is expected to be completed by the end of the year, along with the flyover at the Jalan Tun Jugah-Jalan Song junction.

Accompanying Ting yesterday were Global Upline managing director Datuk Mohamad Danel Abong, advisor Arthur M Lopez, deputy managing director Datuk Micheal Ting, assistant managing director Bobby Ting, deputy project manager Lam Sia Keng and business development manager Gasah Lingkai.

Upgraded Kuching airport set to bring in more visitors

KUCHING: The upgraded Kuching International Airport, with its newly-extended runway, will signal a new era in air travel and connectivity for Sarawak, said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak.

He said he was optimistic that with enhanced connectivity, tourist ar**rivals in Sarawak would increase by leaps and bounds if the state was promoted in a big way.

“Sarawak has many unique attractions,’’ he said after launching the 3.8km-long runway yesterday.

A Boeing 747 jumbo jet with a full pas*senger load landed shortly after Najib was taken on a tour of the ex**tended runway in a convoy of cars.

The runway, which can also take an Airbus 380, was part of a RM800mil project to upgrade the airport.

The project’s turnkey operator was Global Upline Sdn Bhd.

Najib also officially opened the 420-room Four Points by Sheraton Hotel, built and owned by Global Upline.

He said with the new hotel, Sara*wak could promote itself as a centre for international conferences and se**minars, and an eco-tourism destination.

He said the total RM1bil investment in the airport and hotel had gi**ven the state’s economy a big boost.

Earlier, Chief Minister Tan Sri Ab**dul Taib Mahmud said the upgraded airport would better position Sara*wak in the global tourism map.

He commended Global Upline for its investment in the hotel, adding that previous major hotels built mostly involved public investments.

Global Upline advisor Tan Sri Ting Pek Khiing said the four-star Four Points by Sheraton Hotel provided five-star service.

Runway extension will boost tourism industry
By Jacob Achoi

KUCHING: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak is optimistic that the state tourism industry will grow further with the completion of the extension of Kuching International Airport (KIA) runway.

http://www.theborneopost.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/06/000050085.jpg
LAUNCHED: Najib (third right) opens Four Points By Sheraton Hotel. The others (from left) are Lau, Ting, Taib, Danel (partly hidden) Rosmah and Liow.

He said with the extension, the state’s air connectivity would be further enhanced, as the longer airport runway would be able to attract international airlines with bigger aircraft.

“I am very optimistic that KIA with its longer runway now will give impetus to the state tourism industry because it will attract international airlines,” Najib told a press conference here yesterday.

He said this when officiating at the grand opening of Four Points By Sheraton Hotel.

Earlier on, he declared open the KIA runway extension, the ceremony of which was held simultaneously at the hotel.

The prime minister pointed out that the extension project would not only develop the state, but also the country as a whole.

He stressed that air connectivity and accessibility was very important to develop the state and country, adding that the state was blessed with many features that tourists wanted to see.

Najib said many people wanted to see new and unique products, which the state has plenty to offer.

The state has plenty of eco-tourism destinations, he added.

“If Sarawak can be promoted in a big way coupled with a bigger airport, I am confident that many tourists will come in the future,” the prime minister pointed out.

He also said that the development of airports in the country would increase air connectivity and accessibility related to the development of the country as a whole.

Air accessibility, he said, would help to promote national integration, which would augur well for the 1Malaysia concept.

Regarding the hotel, Najib said it would help to attract international seminars and conference that would also help boost local tourism.

The total investment of RM1 billion in the two projects would give added impetus to the state’s economy, he said.

Najib then commended the efforts of Global Upline which undertook both projects and completed ahead of time and with good work quality.

Chief Minister Pehin Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud, Health Minister Datuk Liow Tiong Lai, Deputy Minister of Transport Datuk Robert Lau, Global Upline advisor Tan Sri Ting Pek Khiing, Global Upline managing director Datuk Mohamad Danel Abong and Najib’s wife Datin Seri Rosmah Mansor were among those present at the function.

KIA runway proof of our capability: Taib
By Lim How Pim

KUCHING: Chief Minister Pehin Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud said the fact that the Kuching International Airport (KIA) runway extension was completed using 12 million cubic metres of soil to fill the swampy site proved that Malaysians had the capability to implement more major development projects.

http://www.theborneopost.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/06/000050084.jpg

He said the advisor of the contractor Global Upline Sdn Bhd, Tan Sri Ting Pek Khiing, had emerged from a small-time contractor to what he is today due to hard work and perseverance.

“We have witnessed many cases of Malaysians capable of carrying out major infrastructure projects.

“As for Ting, he is renowned for accomplishing projects ahead of schedule and the BDC flyover is one of them,” he said, adding that contractors’ competency would contribute greatly to both the state and national economy.

Taib also lauded Ting for constructing Four Points, which had helped increase the number of hotel rooms in the city.

Earlier, Ting asserted that many Malaysian contractors were capable of implementing major development projects nationwide if they had the means as well as opportunities.

He felt that it was the coordination between the government and the private sector that would determine the possibility and later the success of various infrastructure development projects.

“Many contractors in the nation can deliver what the government wants. The key is coordination with and in the government. In the meantime, we, the contractors, have to gear up the effort to help the government achieve its goals.”

It was vital for contractors to complete their respective projects within the scheduled time or better, ahead of schedule, he said.

He added that such efficiency would help not only bring down the project cost but also build up or further boost confidence from the government.

“Anything that you want to do, with determination, it can be done,” he stressed.

On Four Points, Ting said the hotel was meant to be a “people’s hotel” so that the general communities could afford the expenses.

“Four Points is built to suit the public, making hotel services more affordable to people. It is now providing five-star services for customers who are charged with four-star expenses,” he said.

Four Points by Sheraton Kuching is strategically located 2km from KIA and 5km south of the city centre.

It has 421 spacious guestrooms that combine stylish comfort and functional design. Guests will also get to choose from six different room types.

Regarding the completion of the airport runway, he said it was a historical moment for all.

“Besides being a boost to eco-tourism in Sarawak, it is a milestone to many more successes,” he said before Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak officially opened Four Points by Sheraton.

Like Najib, he was confident that the extended runway would place Kuching city in a better position on the tourism map.

“With the support from the federal government, KIA is now capable of accommodating Airbus

380 and in the near future, it is hoped that more flights will come from Europe,” he said.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak listening to a briefing on Kuching International Airport by an airport project official (right) as Chief Minister Tan Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud and Global Up Line Sdn Bhd adviser Tan Sri Ting Pek Khiing (left) look on, yesterday.

KUCHING: A Malaysia Airlines (MAS) Boeing 747 aircraft with a full load of passengers made a historic landing at the Kuching International Airport (KIA) here today.
The jumbo jet from Kuala Lumpur, piloted by MAS Senior General Manager of Flight Operations, Captain Datuk Ahmad Zuraidi Dahalan, touched down at 5.05pm on the newly completed extended runway of KIA.

The runway, extended from 2,454 metres to 3,780 metres, is now the longest in Borneo and the fourth in Southeast Asia after Kuala Lumpur International Airport, Singapore's Changi Airport and Bangkok's Suvarnabhumi Airport.

It can now take the Airbus 380.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak, who toured the runway earlier, declared open the extended runway.
Department of Civil Aviation director-general Datuk Azharuddin A. Rahman handed over the certificate of Operational Readiness of Runway Extension to Najib.

Also present was Sarawak Chief Minister Tan Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud.

With a pavement width of 60 metres, the runway is to cater for the Boeing 747 aircraft, having a frequency of 1,200 annual departures.

The runway complies with the International Civil Aviation Organisation requirements, and has visual aids such as glide path, localiser, precision approach lights, runway and taxiway lighting and signs.

The extension of the runway is the final stage of the redevelopment of KIA, costing nearly RM800 million. The terminal building's upgrading and extension was completed earlier.

Global Upline Sdn Bhd was the turnkey contractor and it took four years to complete.

In his message in the souvenir book, Taib said the completion of the extended runway was of great significance to the economic development of Sarawak, particularly since it would be able to handle the unhindered operations of Boeing 747-500 or even the Airbus 380.

He said the bigger cargo load would provide greater efficiency for the operations of industries around here.

"The project is yet another contribution and a continuing show of support of the Federal Government to the economic growth of the peoples and the state of Sarawak," he said. -- Bernama

Federal govt to take over running of SIMC: Dr Chan
By Puvaneswary Devindran

KUCHING: The federal government will take over the running of Sarawak International Medical Centre (SIMC) at Kota Samarahan to quickly alleviate the congestion problem faced by Sarawak General Hospital (SGH).

Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Dr George Chan said it had been decided by both federal and state governments that they would use the yet-to-be opened SIMC to solve the overcrowding woes at SGH.

“Because of the overcrowding in SGH, the solution is for federal (government) to take over SIMC so that we can reduce congestions at the hospital,” he told reporters after attending the BN Sarawak leaders meeting with Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak at a hotel here yesterday.

He said that while Health Minister Datuk Liow Tiong Lai would discuss this in detail with the state government soon, he would hold a meeting on this today.

When asked about the progress of setting up a second general hospital for Kuching, he replied: “… it will come a bit later, but we will use the SIMC first because it is already ready.”

SIMC, said to cost more than RM350 million, is built on a 100-acre site in Samarahan.

The site was said to have a total building gross area of over 42,500 sq metres, consisting of a three-storey hospital podium complex and an eight-storey in-patient ward building.

Facilities at the podium complex include an accident and emergency department for outpatient treatment, kidney stone centre, wellness and heart and cancer centre.

The complex was also planned to provide diagnostic and treatment service through its operating theatres, imaging department, laboratory and pathology section, cardiac catherisation laboratory and physiotherapy department.

The ward tower expects to house a total of 166 beds comprising 18 paediatric beds, 16-day surgery beds, 102 general care beds, 18 intensive and coronary beds and 12 VIP suites.

SIMC was first designed to extend its services beyond the state’s borders and become a South East Asian medical hub.

It was expected to be a major boost for medical tourism in Sarawak, aimed at attracting patients from the region, especially from Kalimantan, Brunei and Sabah.

The state government commissioned Mayo clinic in the USA to assess the feasibility of an international medical centre in Kuching in 1994.

The study which ended in 1996, revealed that “… the timing and opportunity are right for such a medical centre. Among the findings was that there exists a large and unfulfilled need for specialty need and subspecialty medicare”.

Based on that recommendation, the project was approved by the state government.

It was launched in 1998 and slated to be completed within three years of the launch, but till today, many are kept guessing as to whether it has reached completion and why it is still not in operation.

On Tuesday, the people were reminded of SIMC again when St John Ambulance Sarawak chairman and commander Dato Sri Ang Lai Soon proposed that the centre be turned into a temporary holding place for contagious diseases cases like Influenza A(H1N1).

He broached the idea with Chief Minister Pehin Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud who, according to Ang, was agreeable.

Meanwhile, efforts to acquire a second general hospital for Kuching seemed to be an ongoing struggle even after many, from both political and non-political figures, openly voiced the urgency for the city to have one more.

The need for a second general hospital has been making headlines in many of the local newspapers, especially last year.

Kuching is indeed in urgent need of another general hospital especially since SGH also served as the specialist referral hospital for the state.

Although SGH had a newly refurbished wing, this still did not solve the problem of having not enough beds.

It was reported in January last year, that the best estimates put the number at around 800 beds before the refurbishment, which is far from adequate given the city’s population.

For the Intensive Care Unit (ICU), it was learnt that there are only nine beds although the hospital actually has 13 ICU beds and equipment. Again, this was because there just wasn’t enough space.

Furthermore, SGH also receives a reasonable amount of full-fee paying Indonesian patients, especially for radiotherapy cancer treatment.

Other setbacks include the lack of parking spaces and the hospital being understaffed.

It was last year as well that talks about having a second general hospital became even louder when Taib affirmed the dire need to have one or two more general hospitals given the rapid population growth and the ever-increasing responsibility of SGH.

He proposed that one be located between the city centre and Santubong and the other, in rapid growing Samarahan Division.

He said that plans for these hospitals must start “as soon as possible” given that by 2020, the population of the city was expected to grow to one million.

Besides SGH, there are three other hospitals in the state capital - Normah Medical Specialist Centre, Kuching Specialist Centre and Timberland Medical Centre. All are either privately run or government-linked.

German couple wed at Permai
By Puvaneswary Devindran

SANTUBONG: A German couple chose to exchange their marriage vows on the soft sands of Permai Rain-forest Resort on Tuesday.

BEACH WEDDING: Herfert carrying his radiant bride.

With flowers in her hair, blushing bride Anke Schlegel, 42, wed Tllo Guenter Herfert, 40, as the sun set – a perfect showcase of Sarawak’s growing potential as a unique wedding destination for tourists.

Schlegel later told the press that she and her husband never doubted Sarawak would provide them a special and memorable wedding, given its serene natural surroundings and the warmth of its people.

“We got to know about Sarawak through friends on how beautiful it is and how hospitable the people here are and we love Asia too so we decided to have our wedding here,” she said.

The couple from Dresden, East Germany, who are on their first visit to the state, found everything their friends had said about Sarawak to be true.

“We would definitely recommend others to have their weddings here because you have the perfect setting for a beautiful wedding,” said Schlegel.

The couple’s wedding experience was arranged by local based tour operator Masama JS Adventure Tour Sdn Bhd and Germany’s RRW-Travel Richters Reisen Weltweif Tour Operator, with the support of Permai Rainforest Resort and Tourism Malaysia, Sarawak branch.

Meanwhile, Masama JS Adventure Tour business development manager Marco Wunsch said this was the first time he had organised a beach wedding and added it would certainly be incorporated as a package for overseas partners.

“The interest is very high and we have been contacted by several overseas agents who want to have wedding packages in Sarawak. So for the future, we will work on improving it and also think about having an Iban or Malay style wedding at the beach,” he said.

For this wedding, Wunsch said, the overseas agent had contacted his company on ideas of how to make a beautiful wedding for Herfert and Schlegel and he had recommended a beach wedding at the resort because of its surroundings.

“At the moment it’s very popular to get married in Sabah so we want to shift that interest over to Sarawak because of its natural surroundings. When people think of Sarawak, they think of nature and wildlife and this can be very romantic for a wedding.

“It is indeed a new way of promoting Sarawak through wedding packages,” he said.

Wunsch said he had already received a request for an Iban style beach wedding involving a bigger party of up to 20 for next year.

So far four big overseas agents, including one that specifically sells wedding packages, have all expressed interest in Sarawak wedding packages, he said.

He added that other plus points were the simple legal procedures and good support from Tourism Malaysia.

“The Damai Peninsular is in fact very nice for European tourists to stay because you have everything on nature and adventure and the beach here,” said Wunsch.

Mawan: Rainforest World Music Festival unaffected by H1N1 pandemic:banana:
JEREMY VENO

KUCHING:The Rainforest World Music Festival (RWMF) on July 10 to 12 is not affected by the influenza A (H1N1) pandemic even though Sarawak recorded its first case last Monday.
Commenting on the first case (H1N1) in the state, Minister of Social Development and Urbanisation, Dato Sri William Mawan Ikom said that the student who studies in Australia can be termed as an isolated case and should not be a cause for panic as the Rainforest World Music Festival is around the corner.
I don?t think at this juncture we should come out with quick and fast rule as to what can and cannot be done, said Mawan, adding that there may be a ruling as this involves foreign people travelling.
Speaking at the Baitulmakmur building to present compensation cheque to the family of a State football player who died in an accident in Penang, Mawan said that even Malaysia Airlines (MAS) was left with no choice as it cannot ground their airplanes because of the pandemic.

Be more aware

So far there is no guideline or instructions from the World Health Organisation (WHO) to stop the world from communicating with each other, said Mawan, adding that instead people should be more aware and try to minimise the effects.
People will come. We will mingle with them. For those who are not very confident about it, stay home said Mawan voicing out his personal opinion.
He added that as long as there was no direct order from WHO, the Rainforest Music Festival will go on as scheduled.
In line with that, the Rainforest World Music Festival will still attract people, and as far as the local people are concerned, if we feel like to be 100% safe, stay home, he said.
He also said that comparatively speaking, the mortality rate of H1N1 is not that high compared to Malaria although the H1N1 virus had reached the pandemic stage.
Not much light has been shade on this H1N1 except the short time that we have been infected by this. So nobody can conclude whether the virus strain can or may mutilate. The responsibility is yours to get yourself protected,? said Mawan.
He also said that a face mask could be used when attending the Rainforest World Music Festival or in public.
Meanwhile, regarding his Ministrys concern, Mawan pointed out that they were currently restricting their programmes to within Malaysia.
Study trips overseas are suspended for now, he said.
He also said that his staff must cooperate if they suspect themselves to have contracted the virus or come into contact with a suspect and if they are required to be quarantined at their own home, they must abide by the order.
I will not force them (Ministrys staff) to come to the office. They should just stay at home,? he said.

Kuching historical buildings to go

KUCHING: Old buildings along a stretch of Sungai Sarawak's south bank in Kuching City will be demolished to make way for the Kuching waterfront extension project.

The stretch, known as Kuching Bazaar, was a bustling trading centre during the White Rajah era.

Among the buildings are Gambier vegetable market, fish market, poultry market, old information office, garment store and Ban Hock wharf hawkers' centre.

The buildings, which are more than 100 years old, will be demolished in three weeks' time.:ohno:
"Gambier Street is where Kuching started.

"Even if they want to develop the place, these historical buildings should be preserved for the coming generations," Padungan assemblyman Dominique Ng Kim Ho said yesterday, during a signature petition campaign to stop the demolition.

He said he met with officials from Kuching North City Hall and was informed that they had no choice but to carry out the instructions of the state government and go ahead with the exercise.

Ng said the petition would be sent to Sarawak Chief Minister Tan Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud.

Poll reveals majority wants former Gambier Street market to be preserved:bash:
By JACK WONG

KUCHING: An online poll shows an overwhelming majority of voters want the former Gambier Street market here to be preserved under the proposed extension of the Kuching Waterfront.

The 890m-long scenic waterfront, a popular tourist spot, will be extended from the Gambier Street to the old State Mosque.

More than 92% of the respondents of the Kuching - A heritage city? poll voted for the preservation of the colonial-era built clusters of buildings consisting the old vegetable market, fish market, government store, poultry market, bunker building and the Brooke Dockyard.

These buildings are collectively known as the Gambier Street market.

They agree these buildings, closed down a year ago, are valuable heritage with historical, social and cultural value to the people, said Malaysiapollster, which conducted the poll in May.

Priceless heritage: The development of the Kuching Waterfront extension gets the thumbs up from voters of an online poll, but they insist the cluster of old buildings there, including the Gambier Street market (inset) must be preserved as they are valuable heritage. – By Jack Wong/ The Star

The poll topic was launched by state Urban Development and Tourism Minister Datuk Michael Manyin.

Across the road from the Gambier Street market is a row of two-storey shophouses of Indo-influenced architecture.

The poll results reveal nearly 74% of the respondents agreed the proposed waterfront extension project would enhance the vision of turning Kuching into a heritage city.

The Sarawak Tourism Board and Sarawak Tourism Federation are working towards getting Kuching recognised as a heritage site by Unesco.

More than 83% of the respondents gave their backing to Manyin’s proposal to develop Main Bazaar, Khoo Hun Yeang Street, India Street and Carpenter Street into a heritage site. These places form the old Kuching.

Another 87% of the respondents want Padungan area,a busy commercial district, to be included as a heritage site.

Rushing for the Ice Age:banana:
By Ezekiel Lee Zhiang Yang

26 Jun – The 8-screen MBO The Spring in Kuching, Sarawak, is at the final stages of completion and is aiming to open concurrently with the Malaysian general release of "Ice Age 3: Dawn Of The Dinosaurs" next week.

According to MBO Cinemas, there will be 3-D facilities at the Kuching outlet and titles such as "Ice Age 3: Dawn Of The Dinosaurs 3D" is the perfect movie to open the cinema in conjunction with.

Located on the second floor of the 3-storey mall touted as the largest in Sarawak, the new MBO cineplex would be the chain's sixth and also the only other cinema in Kuching other than Star Cineplex Kuching and the outlet in Riverside Kuching which was recently passed on by Metrowealth to Lotus Five Star.

Easier access to National Park

KUCHING: It will soon be easier for foreign tourists to get to Mulu National Park, Unesco’s world heritage site in northern Sarawak, when MASWings launches its direct flight from here.

The rural air operator has scheduled the inaugural Kuching-Mulu flight on Sept 15, said its managing director Mohd Salleh Tabrani.

He said the thrice weekly flight departing around noon would enable tourists arriving from Singapore and Kuala Lumpur to get immediate connection to Mulu.

Visitors from Singapore to Sarawak has increased significantly as five airlines are now serving the Singapore-Kuching route. Low-cost carriers Tiger Airways and Jetstar Asia launched their Singapore-Kuching services last November and March this year respectively. Also serving the same route are SilkAir, AirAsia and Malaysia Airline.

29 Jun – A new 5-screen cineplex will be open to the public at U Mall in Taman Pulai Utama, Skudai, this Saturday 4 July 2009.

Situated on the first floor, the projected 642-seater will be playing "Transformers: Revenge Of The Fallen" and also "Ice Age 3: Dawn Of The Dinosaurs". According to MBO Cinemas, the outlet is targeted at younger crowds, especially the student population. On a related note, previous plans to open MBO's outlet in The Spring, Kuching, Sarawak in time for "Ice Age 3" has now been shelved. Instead the East Malaysia outlet will now open in August 2009.

Skudai is regarded as a new growth corridor in Southwest Johor. It is 8km from Kulai and 16 km from JB City (central) where most of the biggest Johor cinemas are located. This is MBO Cinemas' second foothold in Johor, after the MBO Square One Mall in Batu Pahat that was opened earlier in January 2009.

The new MBO Cineplex at U Mall is expected to compete with its geographically closest cinema, Star Screen Cinema Plaza Tasik Skudai, Johor Bahru.

AFB sees funded assets growing to RM1bil

KUALA LUMPUR: Asian Finance Bank Bhd (AFB) expects its funded assets to grow to RM1bil by the year-end from RM600mil currently.

Chief executive officer Datuk Mohamed Azahari Kamil said its funded assets were more than RM100mil when he took over last August. He said his predecessor had done a very good job in laying all the groundwork for the current team to build on.

“There are several deals in the pipeline with various companies from different sectors such as plantations, independent power producers, sales and lease of aircraft, and oil and gas,” he said at the signing ceremony between AFB and Lembaga Tabung Haji (LTH).

AFB yesterday signed a financing facility agreement for a Tawarruq term financing-i of RM65mil with TH Indo Industries Sdn Bhd, a wholly-owned subsidiary of LTH. AFB is also the first foreign bank to be appointed LTH’s deposit collection agent.

Azahari said the Tawarruq term financing for TH Indo was for working capital and was a short-term loan of about a year.

“We are committed to the Government to help stimulate the economy by continuing to provide funding to government-linked companies in need of financing facilities for their business expansion, particularly in the Middle East,” he said.

Apart from growing its assets, AFB is also keen on growing the number of retail outlets and product expansion. The bank currently has two branches locally and a representative office in Jakarta. The bank is expected to increase the number of branches in Malaysia to between five and seven in the next two to five years.

“We are conducting feasibility studies to set up a branch in Kuching. Hopefully, this branch will be ready by the year-end,” Azahari said, adding that the bank was also in the midst of setting up a representative office in Brunei.

To a question, Azahari said it was “currently in talks” with several takaful companies hoping to distribute Islamic insurance, and other companies for distribution of more third party products.

Restoration of heritage building like the Gambier St market is a tedious process process that requires expertise from niche consultants and contractors. But they are not impossible to be done. I ve seen a far more decrepit building being succesfully restored to its former glory. The best example is the Frauenkirchen Cathedral in Dresden, Germany. The church was heavily bombed during the WW2, but the city council manage to restore it, literally bit by bit, back to its former form. A lot of heritage building in Venice used to be in such a bad shape too (some of them were on the verge of collapsing into the lagoon) but do you see the Italian authority razed them down into oblivion?

I think Kuching city hall is just too lazy to go through the pain-staking process of restoration, and hence, they are using that lame ass excuse that the Gambier St Market is beyond repair. If complete restoration is such a dauting task for them, then maybe they should compromise by at least preserving the external facade of the market, or annexed it to a modern structure like the Raffles Hotel in Singapore.

Well said lesart! I do agree that DBKU (Kuching North City Council) is giving lame excuse. I was thinking of just keeping the facade if restoration process costs a dear sum. Well Kuching South City Council is not doing any better, they are 'degardening' Kuching (The so-called Garden City) by allowing private companies to chop down big old trees (they said to make way for development/to earn big money from the projects) without taking into consideration the public's feelings and opinions.

So long as the people greed for more money and power, the earth will suffer and those who live on it too.

what i don't understand is that y do they want so bad to demolish the buildings? they can go for other alternatives, simply doesn't make sense to me. such buildings are precious and potrays kuching's past and uniqueness which can be an excellent tourist attraction. :ohno:. Fully restored aged buildings can look amazing like the streets in front of spanish steps in Rome, Italy where u can find high end brands like chanel and Fendi. Why? why? why? do they have to demolish the buildings?:ohno:

..and they want to apply for World Heritage thingy.. doesn't that contradict?

For me, the building is too ugly and to restore the building would be a waste of money as the buildings are too small if they are about to restore the building because if they do restore the building, that building is for what??? if the building can be fully restored and being fully utilized by the people, than its ok because Kuching needs money to develope, not to restore 'wasting money' building that can't be fully utilized.

Well, this is just my opinion, no offence but, DBKU will still continue to demolish that ugly building...

well, the good news is, Kuching esplanade will add up more building in its skyline...:)

More delights for rainforest music fest fans:banana:

KUCHING: Ardent fans of the 12th annual Rainforest World Music Festival at the Sarawak Cultural Village near here can expect greater comfort and new experiences.

A brand new main and secondary stage has been added so that fans will have a bigger space to move around to enjoy the music in the main performing area.

The timber walkway has also been replaced for the safety of concert-goers, all part of the RM5.8mil upgrading exercise for the village.

Popular beat: A group from India performing at last year’s festival.

“Although the crowd capacity has been increased to 10,000 a night, we are capping it at 8,000,’’ Sarawak Tourism Board chief executive officer Gracie Geikie told reporters at Bangu*nan Baitul*makmur in Petra Jaya yesterday.

She had earlier briefed state Urban Develop*ment and Tourism Minister Datuk Michael Manyin on the final preparations for the popular festival, which kicks off on July 10.

Thirteen international and four Malaysian groups will perform during the three nights of concerts.

Eleven countries have confirmed participation in the second Rainforest World Craft Bazaar to be held in conjunction with the music festival.

Geikie said that about RM2.4mil was being spent to organise the festival, which was expected to generate some RM20mil in revenue for tourism-related businesses like hotels, transport and logistic companies, restaurants and eateries.

Last year, the festival drew 22,000 people compared with barely 300 when it was held for the first time.

She said satellite TV operator Astro, the festival’s exclusive media partner, would produce documentary features for airing on its international channels.

“This will give the festival a tremendous boost in publicity,’’ she said.

Some 200 print and electronic journalists from outside Sarawak are expected for the event.

Kuching to KK by express bus
By : Desmond Davidson

KUCHING: The first express bus service to Kota Kinabalu, Sabah, could start before the year is out.

The route through Brunei from one end of Borneo to the other, could take over 24 hours, Biaramas Express Sdn Bhd executive director Henry Lai said yesterday.

Lai told a news conference on the shuttle service for the Rainforest World Music Festival, which his other company Insight Holidays is providing, said Biaramas is working out the details, particularly "how to make passengers as comfortable as possible" on the long trip.

He said the service will start once the administrative and logistical details have been worked out and the delivery of new buses is completed. He said passengers will require a passport because the route passes through Brunei.

The company also plans to start a long distance service between Kuching and Limbang, which will also pass through Brunei.

Biaramas is also one of three companies given licences to operate the new stage bus services in Kuching city. The other two are City Public Link and Jepak Holdings.

On the shuttle service for the RWMF, Lai said Insight Holiday will use 45 coaches and vans this year.

Sarawak Tourism Board said festival goers will have to use the shuttle service as only police and emergency vehicles will be allowed past the road-block about three kilometres from the Sarawak Cultural Village, the venue of the fest.

The Fish market building is worth preserving and can be used for restaurants and shops. Imagine how beautiful this building can be with its arches and columns and filled with restaurants and small shops with a view of the river.
This is the oldest historical part of Kuching and part of its unique heritage destroying it destroys the character of Kuching and is lost forever. The esplanade can easily be built to include the preserved buildings.

http://photos-h.ak.fbcdn.net/photos-ak-snc1/v2197/225/1/628233621/n628233621_1289007_4065.jpghttp://photos-c.ak.fbcdn.net/photos-ak-snc1/v2197/225/1/628233621/n628233621_1289186_1970.jpg

These are the things tourist and visitors find unique. Consider the example of Central Market in KL. Tourists visit Europe for the old unique buildings that add character and show the heritage of the place. Kuching has enough land for malls and modern buildings outside of the old town.

the fish market can be turned say for instance into a restaurant serving fish N chips (that will make more sense). we can do away with some of the buildings but not all of them (so that our kidz still remember that this place used to be a fish market). we can chop down trees but at the same time give good reasons and plant new trees around jln song. we want development but at a proper and delicate way. the market needs cleaning too after being vacant but the council closed an eye for it trying to perceive us that it is dirty and worth total destruction. Anyway, esplanade expansion is good for if the activities done there were healthy not being filled with loiters, drug addicts and muggers.

New era of stages bus in kuching....finally..hope they will prvde not only better but excellent just like those in KL.who know i might be using it next tme..

Commuters to enjoy standard fares soon

KUCHING: Standardised fares and smart card will be introduced when three bus companies, which were recently given new licences for stage buses, start operating in and around the city this year.

Executive director of Biaramas Express Sdn Bhd Henry Lai said that his company, one of the new operators, was still carrying out a comprehensive study on the new services, which would require two to three months to complete.

He was, however, certain that the three bus companies would arrive at the standardised fares and smart cards for the convenience of commuters.

“So far, we are still at an early stage and we need to plan properly, with most of the buses operating in the city centre.

“Biaramas will have 19 units, which are fully air-conditioned but we are not sure about the other two bus companies,” he told a press conference at Sarawak Tourism Board (STB) office in Yayasan Sarawak building here yesterday.

The other companies are City Public Link Sdn Bhd, which has 40 buses, and Jepak Holdings Sdn Bhd with 60 buses.

Lai pointed out that the bus companies could propose new fare charges to the Commercial Vehicle Licensing Board (CVLB).

“We will have to talk to the other two new operators and then propose to the board,” he said.

During DUN sitting on May 18, Minister of Urban Development and Tourism Minister Datuk Michael Manyin said three more bus companies would operate here starting August.

He said the board had approved 119 new licences for stage buses as an effort to improve public transport in the city and in Petra Jaya.

“All these companies are expected to operate (in Kuching) in August. When the new operators come into operation, we will be able to provide better transportation services for the people here,” said Manyin.

Biaramas to start city bus service soon
LH CHENG

KUCHING: Biaramas Express Sdn Bhd hoped to start its bus services in the City before the end of this year. ?
Its General Manager, Henry Lai, disclosed that the company had been one of the three bus companies granted the permit by the government to provide bus services within the city.
He said that the company, which currently had 19 units of air-conditioned bus, was still at an early stage with regards to providing bus services in the city.
?We are still studying and need two to three months to do the planning,? Lai told a press conference here yesterday.
He said the fare would be standardised but until now, no decision had been made yet as talks with the other two operators had to be held.
?If we are to start the city bus service, we will definitely implement the smart card or something similar,? he added.
This long-haul bus service operator now has 50 buses in operation, with more new ones ordered. The company had also applied to operate the Kuching-Limbang and Kuching-Kota Kinabalu routes.
Lai disclosed that the main problem for both routes was that the bus would have to travel through Brunei and eight border checkpoints.
Minister of Urban Development and Tourism, Datuk Michael Manyin Jawong had said, in May, the public transportation in the city was expected to improve when the three more bus operators would be operational in three months? time.
He said the Commercial Vehicle Licensing Board (CVLB) had issued new licences to City Public Link Sdn Bhd, Jepak Holdings Sdn Bhd and Biaramas Sdn Bhd to start the stage bus services in the city.
CVLB had approved 40 permits for City Public Link Sdn Bhd, 60 for Jepak Holdings Sdn Bhd and 19 for Biaramas Sdn Bhd to start the stage bus services.

New centre to tap the MICE market

KUCHING: Sarawak is set to tap the lucrative meetings, incentives, conventions and exhibitions (MICE) market with its soon-to-be opened Borneo Convention Centre.

The specially built centre, which cost RM200mil, is almost ready to begin business.

The centre will host its first event from Aug 9 to 15 – the 2009 Executive Masterclass – followed by a charity concert on Sept 20.

State Urban Development and Tourism Minister Datuk Michael Manyin, who visited the centre yesterday, said the MICE market had the potential to generate “big money” for the tourism industry.

He said those attending MICE events were mostly company executives and businessmen who would spend more than ordinary tourists.

Manyin said although the state’s initial investment in building the convention centre was huge, he was confident that it would reap good returns in the long run.

“The state’s tourism revenue last year was about RM4.3bil. If we can successfully tap the MICE market, we can do much better,” he told reporters.

Also present during the visit were state Assistant Minister in the Chief Minister’s Department Larry Sng, Borneo Convention Centre Kuching chairman Datuk Raziah Mahmud and its executive director Dr Mohamadon Abdullah.

Hi I am new here. But I would like to offer my opinion on the Gambier street markets.
I believe that preserving them is the best thing to do. If we look at cities in malaysia, and the number of tourists that they receive, Penang and Malacca rank far ahead of Kuching, and the reason is simple. There is nothing much to differentiate the average city in malaysia-malls? check, highway? check, big oversized buildings? check. The average tourist does not come to malaysia to see malls, or shoplots. They come to experience the culture, food and history. If Kuching cannot offer something better than cities in West Malaysia or even KK, then they wont bother coming here. Penang and Malacca have lage districs full of historical and cultural buildings. Tourists love them. And if we talk about malls or highways or even large landmarks, Kuching comparatively has nothing. Even when it comes to food, Kuching does not have the variety when compared with cities in west malaysia.
Secondly, in many developed countries, the authorities are putting in place ordinants to preserve cottages, old railway stations-things to the normal malaysian seems worthless. But to them, its a cultural relic, something from the past, and something they proudly maintain and even small buildings have displays that tell the full history of the building. To demolish the Gambier markets means to destroy a peice of history and replace it with something average-as in a waterfront? Come on, thousands of cities in the world have waterfronts, even in malaysia, every city next to the river has a waterfront. So how unique or culturally relevant is a waterfront? If the markets were built during the reign of the Brookes then its a cultural treasure from that era!
If you go to penang and see their old harbour that looks similar to the gambier markets and see how it has been maintained, you will realize that there is so much potential in creating an iconic and historical waterfront!
Kuchingites must come out of this abberated thinking that malls and modern buildings=progress! If a building is old and it has been renovated, that doesnt make it any less historical but instead its a process of preserving the building for the future. A building left unmaintained no matter how historical is only going to end up as a pile of rubble.

Ok, lets put this into perspective, your grandma's house is over 100 years old, but was it linked to the development of Kuching itself? Was it commisioned by the Brooke family to be built for purpose of trade in Kuching? Obviously not.
Just becaus the history of the building is unknown does not equal no historical value. Ok perhaps for you the building has no intrinsic value. Let me give an example-I feel that Main Bazaar shops are an eyesore. I would like them demolished. I am sure majority would disagree. But then I dont know the history, so to me, it has no intrinsic value. Neither does it have any 'art' value.
All you have to do is go to Europe, Take amsterdam or Edinburgh for example, the entire city centers are comprised of buildings older than 100 years old, and as far as I can tell, they are incredibly rich.

As I have suggested before, modern buildings does not equal progess

not fair...only building related to brooke family can be considered as historical building (although on this gambier street case, that building was not build by Brooke family...actually it was build after Brooke era and less than 100 yrs (building itself). the SITE of gambier was located by brooke administration...not the building....that y, under law...any building less than 100 yrs can be demolished. hello2...seriously...gambier street market was political motivated issue. its not a big issue. asked foreign tourist about gambier street wet market...they would say...yucks...the only thing kuching need to improve and so on. seriously..THEY SAID THAT! i used to worked in hotel line...everytime i hv time to approach them and asked their opinion about kch. they like it xcept wet market located in ity center that produce biproduct...which is bad small and sampah...
if goverment doesnt really care about old building...look around...we have textile building, musuem etc that build more 100 yrs ago. government does not simply demolish thing....they know, they also can be sued in court....and many have succeed/winning in sueing government.

What...buildings dont have to be built under the brooke administration to be considered historical. Why must everything be taken literally.
Ok I didnt know that the market was built after the Brooke era, but thats besides the point. The point is that if you don't maintain the buildings, or at least gentrify them, then they will remain an eyesore. If the government can spend incredible sums of money to build that building across the river that will be used only by a select few, why not spare some money to refurbish the gambier markets? The traders are gone so the idea of doing something about the markets is feasible now!

Money in the ‘billions’ from centre: Manyin
By Ting Tieng Hee

KUCHING: Borneo Convention Centre Kuching (BCCK), which is to commence operation later this year, will be a boon for tourism in Sarawak particularly in the meetings, incentive, conference and exhibition (MICE) sector.

http://www.theborneopost.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/07/000050155.jpg
ALMOST COMPLETED: Raziah speaks to Manyin (right) as they walk along the lobby area followed closely by (from left) McCartney, Ose and Sng.

Urban Development and Tourism Minister Datuk Michael Manyin Jawong expects the centre to generate money in the ‘billions’ in the long term, even though the initial capital for the project is very high.

He said he based his positive outlook on the centre’s ability to stage MICE events capable of bringing in high-end tourist expenditure.

“MICE is one of the things in the world today that many countries are going after because it brings in big money.

“Our revenue from tourism will be very big because MICE brings in top executives of big companies in the world,” he told reporters after making a site inspection of the BCCK project yesterday.

Manyin said last year alone, tourism contributed RM4.3 billion to the state’s revenue, which was only second to manufacturing.

He added: “In Sarawak, we believe that if we do it (tourism) well and aggressively, we can make tourism one of our biggest revenue earners.”

On yesterday’s site visit, Manyin said it was to ensure that works were progressing smoothly and that the project would be completed by end of the month for the soft opening on October 18.

Located at the Isthmus near Pending here, the RM200 million project undertaken by PPES Works (Sarawak) Sdn Bhd is now 95 per cent completed.

Among those who accompanied Manyin on the site visit were BCCK chairperson Datuk Raziah Mahmud, deputy chairman Larry Sng, executive director Mohamadon Abdullah, chief executive Trevor McCartney, permanent secretary to Ministry of Urban Development and Tourism Datu Ose Murang and a project director with Public Works Department Stanley Chai.

Meanwhile, McCartney said in a press statement that by July 17, all BCCK’s 61 staff would have moved into the new convention centre.

“The migration of staff from our pre-opening office at Queens Court will be done in stages, with the first batch moving to site next Wednesday and the final batch on July 17,” he said.

Despite the move, enquiries and requests will continue to be entertained by the management team at toll free number 1-800-99-BCCK (2225).

He said confirmed events for BCCK in coming months included ‘2009 Executive Masterclas’ from Aug 9 to 15 and ‘Da Ai Charity Concert on Sept 19.

A wholesome Ramadan buffet would also be held from Aug 22 to Sept 19, with the vouchers for the buffet on sale now.

Featuring state-of-the-art facilities with a rain forest as backdrop, BCCK is the first purpose-built convention centre in Borneo designed to give visitors a memorable experience with world class facilities and five-star services.

It will also feature a shopping centre, marina, offices and an international hotel to fulfill the visitors’ every need and desire.

BCCK is just 5km from Kuching City centre and close to Kuching International Airport.

Major tourist attractions are all within a short driving distance and commercial areas are also within close proximity.

BCCK has a unique multi-dimensional design that is able to accommodate large scale conventions, conferences, exhibitions and multi-purpose events combining entertainment, exhibitions and performances all on the one level.

It is uniquely designed with all the meeting facilities on one level.

On this level, there are accommodations that can cater to any event of between five and 5,000 people.

The Great Hall covering 2,793 sq metres is complemented by 14 additional meeting rooms, extensive registration and foyer space and world class catering services.

Kuching is getting up dude...i may agree tat penang attract tourist due to its seaside but malaca, im not sure how they count it since most of those comin there didnt through any imigration checks or etc..numbers can be add for mileage purposes..but if u want me to count on tourist arrival to kuching, i can agree tat we hv better than malaca..no offence..

with all those MICE and BCCK almst complete, hope thiongs will be more btter & people like us who reside here should play our part & pls dun keep blaming our gov..STB has done so much.it depends on us to further lift it up..

well said nephro. another good example is singapore. they preserved old buildings into something spectacular. which both maintains historical value and also upgrading the image of the area. you get 2 in one.

Gambier St market is no more a market, the market has shifted out.
By renovating and preserving the structure of the buildings and then letting it out as places for restaurants and cafes this will give Kuching waterfront its own unique character. The riverside esplanade can be planed so that it blends with these buildings. Melaka river redevelopment is an examples of how a river esplanade can be built while preserving and revitalizing the area to bring people and tourists.
The original old Kuching, is beautiful and historical as a whole.
People please see past the old neglected state of the buildings to how it will look when properly restored. This is the unique character of Kuching city not its cat statues.

do not be misinformed, Melaka attracts many tourists, local and foreign. It is especially popular with Singaporeans. Many of the old historical buildings and houses have been bought by Singaporean companies, restored and open as hotels. Old Melaka is well maintained and its old buildings are a symbol and character that is uniquely Melaka. Its riverfront redevelopment is impressive with preservation not destruction of the character of the area. (I know as I just visited it)

Tunku Putra School - New Campus in Petra Jaya, Kuching
Source: http://www.cmsb.com.my/works/prj_building.htm

Tunku Putra School's new campus is the first and only school campus in Sarawak to have a cohesive child-safety and child-development approach built into its infrastructure. Located on 22 acres of land, the campus houses 1,400 sq metres of covered linkways and 45 rooms comprising classrooms, audio-visual and science laboratories, music studios, and computer workshops. The project's scope of works also included administration building, playing fields and a multi-purpose sports and community hall. The single entry/exit point, constant video surveillance, "octagonal" shaped buildings with rounded corners, elimination of open drains, separation of pedestrian from in-house traffic, and the fenced-off kindergarten area maximise safety.

Wow...I don't what to say.:ohno: It's gone...forever...
Since it's already down...nothing could be done about it. Well, for the new waterfront, better make it worth the destruction.
