Would really like to meet you, you are one hell of a funny guy....

When you upload onto photobucket, you can choose the size of the oics that you want, big/small/medium....so test and see which is the best...

You staying in Kota Samarahan? I'm from Tabuan, with the new dual carriage way up to KS, I sure will arrive in school earlier, but it means I will have to endure months of dusty roads and construction detours...haiz....

Kuching seeks better security for waterfront

KUCHING: Kuching Waterfront, one of the tourist attractions in this city, needs more sophisticated security equipment such as closed circuit television (CCTV) cameras, said the Malaysian Crime Prevention Foun*dation state branch chairman Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hassan.

The state Planning and Resource Management Minister said they would suggest to Kuching North City Hall (DBKU) to consider installing such devices.

“If possible, the equipment should be directly connected to the nearest police stations,” he told reporters after a social gathering organised by the foundation here yesterday.

Besides the Kuching Waterfront, there were several other areas that needed CCTVs, including areas under the Kuching South City Council (MBKs), said Awang Tengah.

He said the use of CCTVs could help check crime and ensure that this city was a safe place to live and visit.

Meanwhile, the crime rate in Sarawak has dropped by 6.82% in the first nine months of this year, with 9,205 cases compared to 9,879 over the same period last year.

However, serious crimes have increased from last year with 33 murder cases (25 cases last year), 155 rape cases (104) and 438 armed gang robbery cases (360). — Bernama

:lol::lol:
But then again, the drain in the pic IS the "road divider". They don't need to build a new road divider:lol::lol:.
Notice the divider only has the barrier on one side while another exposed side is just inviting cars to go swim in the drain.:ohno:
What they need to do is put another crash "barrier"/guard rail on the other side of the divider. But then again guard rails are not really safe: :ohno:http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Guard_rail#Automotive_safety
Perhaps the drain could go with some cover on the top...

Transforming old DUN into a Drama Theatre Centre
LH CHENG

KUCHING: The former State Legislative Assembly complex may be turned into a Drama Theatre Centre, complete with a mobile stage built within its premises.Chief Minister Pehin Sri Haji Abdul Taib Mahmud said he already had an idea for the proposed centre, and would implement it once “Sarawakians are capable of presenting continuous and viable drama performances.”
“The question now is how do we get the drama to be penned continuously?
“But, when we have overcome that, I will build a stage, a mobile stage at the back of the Banquet Hall of the former State Legislative Assembly complex,” he told Eastern Times after attending the Thanksgiving Concert of the State Education Department at the complex last Saturday evening.
He acknowledged that the time was not yet right to make Kuching a centre of culture and arts in Sarawak. He said he would only plan for such a role when there was enough talents.
“First, we have to build the feeding systems. So far, we have only been able to do singing, debating, and poetry-reading but things like drama are still at the formative stage,” he said.
He said that due to the need to equip people with skills and qualifications, students were often ‘overloaded’ by the education system. Thus, a longer time span was needed to develop culture and art.
“The culture aspect, especially for drama, will take some time to develop, but we have made a start, slowly but surely. In the old days, we usually had bangsawan (Malay drama performances) held every Hari Raya. We had lots of time on our hands then.
“We cannot have it (bangsawan) now because people just don’t give up time for it unless it is very good. Television has diverted our attention from such activities.
“But we have found a medium today – drama - which has been well received in many developed countries. It can be presented through musicals,” said Taib.
The Thanksgiving Concert last year and the one last Saturday evening, he said, was a starting point for further exploration of the cultural direction of Sarawak.
“We need to feel our way to see where the forum is, where all the races would gladly join in (drama) so that they can build something through which they can express their ideas of what they really love about Sarawak.
“I am not talking about politics here. I’m talking about how we grow up, how we feel, and how to find a common expression to convey what we have enjoyed and what inspires us.”
He said common expression had to be identified first and that would probably take time. The Thanksgiving Concert which had been held for two consecutive years, he said, was the right forum. He wanted something to develop from there.
“I think it is the best way to start - by getting all the teachers and others involved in shaping the mind of our young people - to move society in the same direction.

Kuching waterfront is now nore alive than before, especially during weekends. I went to Waterfront last night and i saw many people with their family going there along with kids. Bud, sadly, some part of the Kuching waterfront are dark. Plus, the DUN lights are not turned on. Why the lighting system for our biggest landmark are not turned on??? well, most of our landmark's lights are not turned on like the cats ctatue in the heart of the city. Sayang bah mun benda kedak ya sik di maintain bagus2. In addition, the water in the dancing fountain are dirty!!!:ohno:

But, i really hope that the management in Kuching Waterfront will improve the city's waterfront along with the extention of the waterfront. Can't wait for it to be completed.

Oh, you meant making it grade separated (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grade_separation) from the smaller path alongside the Serian Highway. (Several articles about urban transportation on the Wiki is awesome as an introduction to several issues we can discuss in this forum:)).
That would be great for safety and also speed:banana:.

But tget back to the accident pic. If you put barriers all along the highway, how about those living next to the highway >>imagine the owner of house in the accident pic.
You need to get those people living next to the highway access to the highway somehow...

But nothing is impossible, just the question of when will have this --> some psycho ways of persuading reluctant landowners/residents to move + cash burning land acquisitions + make some parallel/alternative route to enter the highway/ or expand the highway (i don't like this) + build awesome access ramps/flyovers/interchange + increase speed limit -----> you can have a safer and high speed highway to Serian - unless if they put in an extra step of installing speed cams.

i dont think that that is a problem. I believe most of the houses there are squatters. Just move them lar...
Yes... grade seperation will make the road safer. do you all think so?

:lol::lol: Oh dear, you're evil...:lol:
Anyways thanks for the pics, too bad no pics of Serian itself. The road seems to be of satisfactory quality. I can't remember when was the last time I went to Serian, must be ages ago. Believe me, some roads here in Perth seems worse than the Serian Highway - at least from what I can see from the pic anyway.

Temple proof of state govt’s support:
By Ting Tieng Hee

KUCHING: Fuk Teck Kung Temple in Beliong received a shot in the arm on Saturday when the state government approved an acre piece of land and RM50,000 grant for its expansion plans. Environment and Public Health Minister Dato Sri Wong Soon Koh, who announced the good news at the temple’s 30th anniversary dinner at Padungan Community Centre on Saturday, said this showed that the state government supported religious freedom and the building of places of worship.

“Two weeks ago, the temple’s building committee came to see me concerning the temple’s expansion plans. I then met Chief Minister Pehin Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud who did not hesitate to approve the one-acre plot next to the temple for its expansion,” he said.

Wong said the grant included RM40,000 from Taib and RM10,000 from himself.

He was pleased to note that the temple had grown from a humble beginning of an attap-covered hut to a magnificent place of worship and tourist attraction.

“This is the result of the hard work and cooperation between the temple’s committee and building committee as well as the support of the devotees, public and private sectors over the years,” he said.

Wong stressed that religions should be incorporated into the people’s way of life so that they can develop both spiritually and physically.

“Malaysia is a multi-racial, multi-religious and multi-cultural country. It practises religious freedom and through religion, a society of high moral and values can be created,” he said.

Honorary advisors to the temple Senator Datuk Sim Kheng Hui and Datuk Alfred Yap, and Kuching City South Council Mayor James Chan were among the 4,000 people at the dinner.

The event was also to celebrate the recent completion of a RM3 million Heavenly Pagoda which is the latest addition to the temple.

In a related development, the Heavenly Pagoda building was opened by Wong at Beliong yesterday morning.

He was optimistic that the temple had the potential of becoming another tourist destination in Sarawak.

“Many tourists would be curious to learn how a temple can exist and develop into a magnificent landmark in a non-Chinese area,” he said.

Also present were Asajaya assemblyman Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah and the Consul General of the Consulate of the People’s Republic of China to Kuching, Xie Fugen.

MBKS to seek CCTV funding under 10MP
Tuesday, October 20th, 2009 By Zora Chan

KUCHING: The Kuching City South Council (MBKS) will resubmit its application for closed-circuit television (CCTV) funding in the Tenth Malaysia Plan (10MP) after bids to be included in the current five-year plan failed.

Mayor James Chan yester*day said the council first submitted the proposal to install CCTV at 13 crime-prone areas at a cost of some RM2 million in 2004.

“We submitted the propo*sal in 2004 for 9MP but there was no news. In 2005, we resubmitted our application and also no news.

“We resubmitted it to the Chief Secretary to the government when I paid him a visit last year but till now, it has yet to be approved. But we’ll resubmit the ap*plication for 10MP,” he told reporters at the coun*cil’s Open Counter Day here. Chan said the council decided to install CCTVs after the police identified 13 high crime areas under its juris*diction.

These mainly commercial areas include BDC, Ken*yalang Park, Padungan (near HSBC Bank), Song Thian Cheok Road and Rock Road/Laksamana Road.

Meanwhile, Chan said the council was looking for ways to reduce mainte*nance cost for the Friendship Park, which comes to about RM300,000 each year.

“It’s very costly to maintain the Friendship Park. I’m thinking of fencing the place up – it’s not to prevent the public from using the park, but only at certain times,” he said.

He said vandalism was very bad at the park and feared that if not addressed fast, some statues including that of Admiral Cheng Ho would be vandalised.

Chan added that the public should not fish in the lake, feed the fish with bread or bring their dogs to the park, unless they were willing to collect and dispose of their pets’ droppings.

Chan called on city dwellers and com*munity-based associations to team up with the council to care for their respective housing areas in order to make Kuching a more liveable place.

“The council is always happy to serve the people and make the city a more liveable place and today, we’ve reached a certain level of success in that.

“But the council can’t do everything, so help us to look after the drains, grass, trees and crime,” he said.

He said this is because the council could not rectify all public complaints imme*diately, and the people could at times help by doing their part to keep their residential area problem-free.

Kuching's RM148 Million Flood Mitigation Project To Complete On Time
October 21, 2009 18:57 PM

KUCHING, Oct 21 (Bernama) -- The Natural Resources and Environment Ministry has ordered the contractors for the RM148 million Kuching flood mitigation (Phase 1-Stage 1) project to complete it as scheduled as no extension of time will be given.

Its minister Datuk Douglas Uggah said this was in line with the Cabinet's decision not to delay the implementation and completion of projects planned under the Ninth Malaysian Plan (9MP).

Speaking to reporters after attending a briefing by the turnkey contractors at the project site here Wednesday, Uggah said the number of projects completed in the 9MP would have a great bearing on the number of projects that would be proposed, approved and implemented by the ministry in the coming Tenth Malaysia Plan (10MP).

"I hope the contractors will work it out with our ministry's officials on how to speed up the project, either by increasing the work capacity or by immediately rescheduling the work progress," he said without divulging the reasons for the delay of the projects.

Kuching's flood mitigation (Phase 1-Stage 1) project was awarded to Naim Cendera Sdn Bhd and Ambang Project Management Sdn Bhd by the Drainage and Irrigation Department (DID) with the construction period of 18 months.

As of Sept 30, 2009 the project was about 42.15 per cent completed while the deadline for full completion had been set for Feb 28, 2010. Under the present phase, a flood bypass channel has been proposed as the best option to solve flooding in Kuching city by diverting the flood water from Sungai Sarawak's upper catchment to Sungai Salak.

The construction of the flood bypass channel was among the proposals made by the DID when it conducted the "Sungai Sarawak Flood Mitigation Option Study" back in 2000.

In a related development, Uggah said due to financial constraint, the Kuching flood mitigation project would stretch until the 11th Malaysian Plan (11MP) involving a total allocation of about RM2 billion for the construction of the barrage, tidal gates and causeway.

He said under the 9MP, RM400 million has been spent for various flood mitigation projects in Sarawak.

I remember reading an article saying the sommerset is kuching's tallest....until the proposed Kuching Tower surfaced....and there has been no statement saying that Menara Pelita is the the tallest...not even one :) but then again until u ask Alain Robert to measure it for us, u can never be sure

Menara Pelita is 22 storeys tall, Gateway Kuching is 24 storeys tall. While Menara Pelita has a dome with a 'mini spire,' Gateway Kuching adds extra height with the double spires.

edit: small mistake; did two checks, Emporis lists Menara Pelita as having 22 floors, Zecon Bhd mentions 24 floors. I am confident Gateway Kuching has 24 floors. Either way, the spires on top of Gateway Kuching still give it the height advantage. We might have to get building details from DBKU and MBKS to come to the final conclusion of this 'mystery.'

I read a book once on Kuching saying Gateway is the tallest in Kuching

Quiroz
October 22nd, 2009, 04:43 PM
Hurm, i still have doubt that Sommerset Getaway is the tallest. 24 floors doesn't mean that it is the tallest.

Just like PetronAS tOWER AND NY wtc, both has 88 stories and 110 stories respectively. But which one is taller?

kealchg
October 22nd, 2009, 05:06 PM
Quiroz you are half correct. In terms of just the building, it is Pelita, but Somerset has the spire which made it the higher.

Click on the link for the countdown of the tallest building in Kuching...

^^^ i can't open the link you posted earlier...

Btw, i asked which building is the tallest??? :hammer: (Sik maok kalah...)

Then again, sommerset is on top of a hill. Menara pelita on a flat land. Hurm... we should ask someone to measure the 2 building.

Gateway Kuching is the tallest in the city the office tower is 24 stories, Menara Pelita is one of the tallest but no the tallest. Gateway being 24 stories plus the spire makes it the tallest

I think even without the spires, Somerset Gateway is still the tallest building in Kuching. The information provided by emporis is not accurate. They left out Chonglin Plaza which has over 20 stories. :ohno:

With spire, new DUN building is the tallest building in Kuching, that is what they claimed.:)

^^^^ In that case, Dun is the tallest structure in Kuching. Not the tallest building in Kuching.

Anyone know what building opposite the titanium tower???

Opposite The Spring??

Who know when Kuching Sentral going to be completed?

How about the Hasil buildng?

City tower.... at the civic center. What firm suppose take care of the building. I think the tower has the potential for tourism rather than being neglected just like that. Poor thing.

Sarawak Plaza welcomes Everrise

Kevin Tan

KUCHING: The Management of Sarawak Plaza is pleased to announce the opening today of Everrise’s latest outlet in Sarawak Plaza Shopping Complex. Located at lower ground floor level, this would be Everrise’s 17th outlet in Sarawak.
Everrise is Sarawak’s biggest home-grown supermarket and the new outlet has approximately 14,000 sq. ft of floor space offering customers a wide selection of groceries, fresh farm produce, frozen food, toiletries, imported products and many others. There are also wide varieties of household essentials, home furnishing, hardware, car-care products, stationery, and toys and gifts items.
Sarawak Plaza is one of the pioneer shopping malls in the State. Since undergoing major renovation in 2008, it is now poised to be the destination of choice for city dwellers, office workers and tourists in the Golden Triangle of the city.
Sarawak Plaza is unique as it features the state’s largest sports apparel and footwear store, the largest toy centre and also the largest luggage and travel accessories store. With the addition of Everrise, this place will be a one-stop shopping mall where families will benefit from a wider range of products available.
In conjunction with the opening, there are exclusive promotions offered to shoppers like free food, free photo taking with mascot, gifts, free exchange of Dove shampoo and a lion dance performance at 10am.
Everrise Sarawak Plaza will be running promotions every weekend and is also a participating outlet for the month end “PRICE CRUSH” promotion together with the rest of the Everrise stores. Three times in a year, the new store will also run the “ONE DAY BIG BOOM” extraordinary promotion.

I want to ask opinion from you all. What if i want to build LRT system in Kuching. But don't leave opinion that can start flames, please.:

1. From where to start to where to end?

I want to ask opinion from you all. What if i want to build LRT system in Kuching. But don't leave opinion that can start flames, please.:

1. From where to start to where to end?

2. Is it necessary for Kuching to have LRT system?

3. If LRT are about to be implemended in Kuching, will it survive?

4. If LRT can't survive, give me few reason of your opinion.

Thank you...

the LRT issue have been discussed many times maybe that's y no one bother.. sorry. but personally, i think its not the time yet for kuching to have LRT. my answer

1- from samarahan (high institution clusters) to city centre and to petra jaya to batu kawah.

2- not yet

3- it will not survive now

4- because the city is not big and very developed yet. i mean, kuching is big city but not every corner of the city is like the city centre. cost is also the main issue. not only implementing LRT involve big ammount of money but also maintaining cost a lot too.then, forsurela.. tiket also mahal. if our city is highly populated like singapore and KL okla. because a lot of people.. 1 because a lot of people of KL and people from outside of KL, 2) a big number of people prefer using LRT to avoid jam, to cut cost of fuel, and etc.

our city is not ready for LRT yet. even bus pun people lazy to get on. i get the point of convenience for the public as well as tourist but the question is who wants to operate a LRT if the untung is lower than the cost?

High-speed broadband to be deployed by mid-2010

Friday, October 23rd, 2009

THE country’s high-speed broadband is expected to be deployed by the middle of next year, the Dewan Rakyat was told yesterday.Deputy Information Communication and Culture Minister Datuk Joseph Salang Gandum said at the moment the system was being tested at four exchanges in the Klang Valley namely Bangsar, Shah Alam, Subang Jaya and Taman Tun Dr Ismail.

Telekom Malaysia, he said, had also started physical work at 22 other exchanges nationwide.

“The network access will provide high-speed broadband via 1.3 million premises in the Klang Valley, Iskandar Malaysia and in several economic and industrial zones in Malaysia.

“The comprehensive test is to be completed this year and the service will come on stream by middle of next year,” he said in reply to Saifuddin Nasution Ismail (PKR-Machang) during question time.

He said apart from last mile access, the joint venture project between the government and Telekom Malaysia would also cover core network and international gateway which was currently under preparation.

“Most of the domestic core network has been installed and is being tested.

“As for the international gateway, the existing American-Asia Gateway undersea cable system is being enhanced and expected to be completed by end of this year,” he said. — Bernama
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
How about this? In my opinion, why bother??? No point for this if the government will cut the speed after 5Gb of usage. That is what happen to celcom broadband users. Strimyx users will be next because our kementerian telekomunikasi and multimedia ask our ISP to do that. How about your opinion about this?

KL needless to say la. even if u open two mcd side to side also people will go. or three or four.. but for a city like kuching.. its different.that is the reason for onetj doing badly now.

"why need go to go to onetj when we already have saberkas?.. its the same. saberkas offer more stuff also" <---something we might think.

the same goes to the new malls..

"why need to go to XXX mall when we already have thespring?.. its the same. thespring offer more stuff also" unless if they have a bowling arena or jusco or ikea or anything new. population and location wise also count.

i've been to brunei. bandar seri begawan<---- is this a city or just a town? thats what pops up in my head when i first got there. since their exchange rate is the same as singapore, i expect a city like spore. being citizen of brunei is a different story. u get extra income from the sultan, bla, bla... many advantages.. many rich people there. but the problem is their so-called city is not developed on par with their wealthiness. that's y bruneians always go somewhere else for all different reasons but mainly shopping.

Major players in town for International Energy Week

KUCHING: The power and petroleum industry in the region is set to gather here — the future energy hub of Asia — for the International Energy week (IEW) 2009.The three-day event, from Nov 3-5 at the Borneo Convention Centre Kuching (BCCK), is to be hosted by the state government and supported by Sarawak Convention Bureau.

The organisers are AMB Exhibitions (Kuala Lumpur).

IEW 2009 will welcome over 5,000 delegates and trades from the energy industry across the region.

It aims to allow industry professionals to explore business partnerships and generate business and investment opportunities in the multi-billion ringgit Sarawak Corridor on Renewable Energy (SCORE), the organiser said through a press release yesterday.

Chief Minister Pehin Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud said: “It is my pleasure to welcome all delegates and participants to the brand new Borneo Convention Centre for the IEW 2009. This event is timely as it will complement the development of SCORE.

“Sarawak has tremendous potential in the energy sector. We have one of the largest gas reserves in the world and at the same time, significant capacity for hydropower.

“The state government is committed to ensuring that our resources will contribute to the betterment of our people and nation.

“In addition, by bringing in industry experts, academicians and technology suppliers, Sarawak can become a centre of excellence where training, research and development can flourish.”

Exhibitors consist of top industry players including BC Petrochemical Sdn Bhd, Bintulu Port Sdn Bhd, Nippon Oil Exploration, Petroleum Technical Services Corporation-Vietnam, Petronas, Sapuracrest Petroleum Berhad, Sarawak Shell Berhad, Siemens Malaysia, Sirim Berhad, Yangtze Three Gorges Technology And Economy Development Co Ltd.

Meanwhile, CEO of Sarawak Convention Bureau Jill Henry said: “Hosting this prestigious event will help add to the credibility of Sarawak as a new hub for international exhibition.

“Our unique destination offers rainforest side by side with a booming export economy, meaning that professional delegates will have a memorable and productive meeting.”

Chip in a few condos and at least a hotel with convention or meeting facility to utilize the land fully. look at pavilion, midvalley and times sq and take the pros of each but don't forget its cons too. Mere shopping mall on that prime land (heard that it was around rm100mil) is a waste. giant/tesco or carrefour can build a hypermarket away from town. but to survive, you can't run a business that the market is already very saturated with. supermarkets are ubiquitous in kuching now.

There's another similarly named "Singapore International Energy Week" held not too far away from Sarawak's... from 16th Nov to 20th Nov, and it seems they're going to have big shot names present like IEA (International Energy Agency) Exec Director presenting the World Energy Outlook 2009. Wonder if our one is deliberately timed so close to Singapore's one???

well, even thou the seminar @ conference name may look similar, but the topic touched may be differ from each other. on the same time, it is timely for sarawak to organize the conference due to its own experience of having a gigantic dam. So tis conference may be the basement for the state gov to share experience, find solution for any problems occured & to have a business matching with other countries within the region who may interested in investment or buying power from the state. as for singapore, they may just be an organizer for the experts from all over the world to have change of thought..

Latest hospital to use myCare2x Open Source HIS
KUCHING: The Cardiac Centre in Sarawak General Hospital (SGH), an internationally recognised, leading Cardiac Centre here, is the latest hospital in the region to use the myCare2x Open Source Software Hospital Information System (HIS).
Sarawak Information Systems Sdn Bhd (SAINS), in cooperation with Healthcare Consulting gmbh (Germany), has spent the last few months implementing the system for the centre.
This software streamlines patient healthcare information, namely, patient administration, patient appointment and test scheduling, test results management and electronic patient file, making information more readily availbale and allows greater efficiency at the Centre in order to meet the ever increasing workload.
The myCare2x HIS can further improve information flow through integration with the Cardiac Centre equipment and SGH laboratories and pharmacy, a statement from SAINS pointed out.
“This implementation will integrate electronic laboratory results directly into the patient electronic medical record. The implementation will also allow physicians access to medical images stored in myCare2x,” it said.
It added direct support services for myCare2x for SGH would come from SAINS here.
Hence, responses to any issues would be immediate.
Besides onsite support and a 24-hour Call Centre Service, SAINS will also provide support for fixes and further application enhancements and product development of myCare2x.
“This event is timely to announce a new business direction of SAINS into the healthcare solutions and services, a direction that has been suggested by the Chief Minister himself. SAINS has taken a new strategy in selecting Open Source Software in healthcare solutions and services. This will be very appropriate for the South East Asian region.”
While there has been worldwide interest in electronic medical records (EMR), the cost, especially in this region, has been prohibitive, pointed out the statement.
“In Malaysia, for example, the cost of implementing EMR over its 130 hospitals would be untenable at current costs.
“The same scenario is repeated in other countries in South East Asia. With the Open Source Software and specifically, myCare2x, the possibility is now presented that Malaysia can address EMR for the whole nation because myCare2x has no software licensing cost and the costs are mainly implementation and annual maintenance,” it added.
Sarawak Information Systems Sdn Bhd was established in 1991 and has since grown and strategically developed a presence in Malaysia as a leading ICT Systems Integrator and Solutions Provider. Its services and solutions include IT consultancy, software development and integration, networking and systems engineering, project management, IT training, data conversion and digitisation, facility management and operations support services.

KUCHING: Broken electrical and electronic products should be sent to collection centres licensed by Department of Environment (DOE) so that the various components like plastic, precious metal, glass, and others can be be extracted for recycling.
“The practice can help to prevent waste from littering the environment, and causing irreparable damage to the eco-system, and our health, says Minister of Environment and Public Health Dato Sri Wong Soon Koh when officiating at the opening of a seminar on ‘E-Waste Management: Enchancing the Malaysian Concern’ here yesterday.
“ There are many ways to decrease e-waste, namely reuse, recycle and recovery. For reuse, consumers could donate their electrical and electronic items to higher learning institutions, and technical skills teaching centres,” said Wong, whose text of speech was read by Assistant Minister of Environment Dr Abang Haji Abdul Rauf Haji Zen.
Wong also called for effective management of e-waste from all strata of society, be they in urban or rural areas, in view of the rapid development experienced in the State.
“Everybody must give more attention to the handling of e-waste and adhere to the laws governing the issue for the benefit of the future generations.
“According to Environmental Protection Agency, more than two million metric tonnes of e-waste were discarded in the world every year. It is expected to increase by 2% in 2010.
“The increase (of e-waste) will bring about more pollution to the environment, water sources and public health because of the heavy metal content such as lead, mercury and cronium, which are found in electrical and electronic products,” said Wong.
The seminar, organised by State DOE, was held in conjunction with World Energy Week (October 21-27) to bring about greater awareness on issues related to e-waste.
More than 100 participants comprising officers from local councils, government agencies, public as well as private institutions attended the seminar, which was held at the State Library.

Bishop’s House – a state heritage
By Wilson Luke

http://www.theborneopost.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/10/newst00005.jpg

IT was an opportunity not to be missed when the Right Reverend Datuk Bolly Lapok, Bishop of the Anglican Church in Sarawak and Brunei, known as the Diocese of Kuching, invited thesundaypost for an exclusive look at the on-going renovation of the 160-year-old Bishop’s House at Jalan McDougall.

The three-storey building dates back to the era of the White Rajah.

James Brooke (the first Rajah) appointed the first Anglican missionary, the Revd Francis Thomas McDougall, priest and doctor (who later became the first Bishop of the Diocese) to come to Sarawak on June 29, 1848.

The present St Thomas’ Cathedral compound that used to be part of a jungle-covered hill behind the old town, was given by the Rajah to the Diocese on August 25, 1849.

On the site, McDougall put up a fine wooden church, capable of accommodating 250 persons and a house (now known as the Bishop’s House.)

He employed TA Stahl, a German ship carpenter, shipwrecked off Santubong, to start the project. The plan must have been drawn up by McDougall and Stahl as no architect is mentioned in the records.

After World War II, the Diocese of Labuan and the Bishopric of Sarawak were combined into the Diocese of Borneo; Nigel Cornwall was consecrated Bishop on November 1, 1949.

Cornwall’s immediate task was to restore the ruins of the churches, schools and other mission property destroyed during the years of the Japanese Occupation.

The Bishop’s House was spared because the Japanese soldiers used it as a store.

The year 1953 saw the construction of the new St Thomas’ Cathedral to replace the quaint, leaky wooden edifice built by McDougall.

Most importantly, men, prepared for ordination at the House of Epiphany, provided nine new priests in 1956. Bolly is in the 13th Bishop to be anointed to head the Diocese of Kuching.

“The Bishop’s House is a state heritage and we will try our best to keep the architecture and structure as original as possible,” he said as he showed me around the place. Some parts of the wings of the building are still under construction.

It is amazing the main building that once housed the McDougalls is still standing after 160 years although the wooden structure is badly affected by time and the elements. It is a miracle

the building could have withstood the test of time in humid tropical conditions.

“The inner structure supporting the building has been refurbished while the interior reconfigured to add new rooms,” Bolly explained.

He complimented the contractors for replacing the old wooden beams and foundation without affecting the overall structure.

The focus is now on the next phase — construction of access road, car and utility sheds, landscaping and fencing and repair of the Old Deanery for the in-coming Assistant Bishop.

Bolly disclosed the costs now exceed RM2.25 million — more than the earlier estimates of RM1.5 million.

Although the over 6,000 Anglicans have responded generously to the ‘Save the Bishop’s House’ Appeal, it has not generated enough funds for the renovation project.

“Funds are still very much needed as costs have also gone into landscaping, fencing, drainage and access road,” he said, hoping the state government would assist with funding.

Bolly also showed some of the treasure troves kept at the Bishop’s House, including a trowel and hammer, a symbol of present Cathedral’s foundation stone, laid by the Duchess of Kent. The building was completed by May 1953.

The inscription on the trowel reads: “With this Trowel was laid the Foundation Stone of the Cathedral Church of St Thomas, Kuching of the Diocese of Borneo by Her Royal Highness, The Duchess of Kent, on the 15 Oct 1952”.

The consecration of the Cathedral by Cornwall took place on June 9, 1956.

The other treasure troves are the staff and the cross used by McDougall and now kept in a safe, a one-of-a kind copper relief, depicting the Last Supper in a longhouse setting, antique

Chinese furniture and what is said to be the “biggest and heaviest” banquet table, made of belian hardwood, in the main dining room.

The copper relief, created by Hilda Than, was presented to the Bishop’s House in November 1983 by William SH Goei and his wife of Singapore.

“I am proud to be part of the succession at this grandest place in the history of Sarawak,” Bolly said.

According to the history of the Church, the missionaries set up their base on a tract of land, provided by the Rajah in Kuching, near the Sarawak River.

The Borneo Church Mission was established in England in 1846 with the purpose of sending Anglican missionaries to Borneo.

During that time, allocation was made for a church that was to serve as pro-cathedral for many years, a school that later grew into St Thomas’ and St Mary’s schools, and a dispensary that speedily won McDougall the affection and trust of the Chinese and native townspeople who lived nearby.

After 1909, when the then Bishop could concentrate solely on Borneo, a new era for the Church dawned. Three decades of well-planned growth and development followed with Dayak and Chinese clergy being ordained in increasing numbers.

By 1962, plans were completed for the division of the Diocese of Borneo. The new Diocese of Jesselton (Sabah), including Labuan, came into being on July 24, 1962. The remainder of the Diocese, including Brunei, was reconstituted as the Diocese of Kuching on August 13 the same year when Cornwall continued as Bishop.

Needless to say, before the Parishes attained their self-supporting status, their growth was sustained financially and pastorally fromthe Bishop’s House. There, the mission’s outreach was planned and nurtured that gradually grew and eventually became the Parishes in the Archdeaconries.

“We are going to submit to the federal and state governments a proposal to build Pusat Anglika, a complex with many buildings, including the Bishop’s House, Anglican Guest House, Parish Hall, Education Building and the House of Epiphany,” Bolly said.

He disclosed renovation of the current building and the construction of new ones were estimated to cost between RM12 million and RM15 million.

Plaza Merdeka, the largest department store in Kuching

KUCHING: Two contract signings took place here yesterday at the Riverside Majestic Hotel to kick-off the construction of Plaza Merdeka slated to be the largest department store in Kuching comprising 135,000 sq ft.The ceremony encompassed the signing of a construction contract between Bina Puri Construction Sdn Bhd and Rakyat Elite Sdn Bhd and the signing of an anchor tenant contract between Parkson Corporation Sdn Bhd and Plaza Merdeka Holdings Sdn Bhd.

Being the oldest part of town, the site that was acquired exactly two years ago is scheduled for completion in March 2012 and is the first large brownfield redevelopment project in Kuching.

The managing director of Plaza Merdeka Holdings Sdn Bhd, Steve Ng said during a speech at the ceremony: “We are grateful to Bina Puri Construction Sdn Bhd for its cooperation, in particular to Datuk Henry Tee to have mobilised the project prior to a formal contract being executed. This has enabled us to save about three months and construction is now in full progress.”

He added that having secured Parkson Corporation as a key anchor tenant in Plaza Merdeka has had a good impact as the company has received quite a number of strong enquiries from sub anchor tenants and nationally recognised retailers.

“This is very exciting as a having a store of this size opens up huge retailing possibilities and it will be one of the major draws. Also, as a result of Parkson’s endorsement, we will be working closely with some nationally recognised retailers and we fully expect to secure commitments from them in the near future,” he expressed.

Ng explained that Plaza Merdeka is going to be the same yet differ in some aspects from other major shopping centres because it will be a component of the revitalisation of the picturesque and historic district of Kuching City.

I think Kuching really need a gay club. KK already has one, "Q Bar". KL has countless. Kuching should get one or else, the nightlife will be dead boring. I'm not encouraging homosexual lifestyle, but whether you like it or not, gay communities play a significant role in developing Kuching. If not because of them, you won't see lots of beauty saloons and designer boutiques.

Yeah, someone did a research and conclude that Kuching has around 53 supermarkets. I referred to Chinese version of Wikipedia and agree with that number. So it is very hard for Tesco or Jusco to penetrate Kuching market because supermarkets can be found everywhere in Kuching, whether in Kuching South, Kuching North or Padawan area. :ohno:

ABB To Tap Green Energy Opportunities In Sarawak

KUCHING, Oct 28 (Bernama) -- Power and automation technology group, ABB, is set to tap the green energy opportunities in Sarawak, especially in the Sarawak Corridor of Renewal Energy (SCORE).

ABB South Asia region manager, Sim Boon Kiat, said Sarawak's massive reserves of hydro-power, coal, natural gas as well as bio-mass would drive Sarawak's potential as a vital energy powerhouse for Malaysia as well as the region in the long term.

"ABB is set to pursue green energy opportunities in Sarawak with the opening of the new office here today. It is a momentous occasion as it marks ABB's ambitious foray into Sarawak to tap the enormous potential afforded by SCORE," he told reporters after the opening of the office here today.

Sim, who is also country manager of ABB Malaysia Sdn Bhd, said the new office would enable ABB to strengthen its reach in the Sarawak market and show its seriousness and commitment.

"It is an important platform, which allows us to better understand the challenges and opportunities in the market, and for building successful partnerships with our customers," he said.

He said the ABB customers in Kuching would receive innovative, timely and practical solutions comparable to the company's global standards and principles

Sim said ABB was committed towards ensuring that its extensive portfolio would be able to deliver solutions to put Sarawak on the map as a renewable energy powerhouse for Malaysia.

"SCORE, stretching for 320km along the coast from Tanjung Manis to Similajau, covers 70,709 sq km with a population of 607,800 people, will provide the impetus to fast-track the state's growth, pushing the economy to the next level in the coming decades," he said.

Energy resources, mainly hydro-power (20,000 MW), coal (1.46 billion metric tones) and natural gas (40.9 trillion cu ft) are readily available for the SCORE region, he said.

"This augurs well for ABB as the strong emphasis on renewable energy sources in the Sarawak corridor presents enormous opportunities for our technology, sustainable solutions and industry expertise," he said.

Level Up Fitness officially opens for business

KUCHING: Level Up Fitness, a 10,000 sq ft three-storey gym, officially opened for business yesterday. Conveniently located right in the heart of Kuching at Everrise Tower just next to Travilion, it is outfitted with brand new exercise equipment from leading American manufacturers Cybex and LifeFitness.
The gym features a Cardio Theatre, a suite of 21 Cardio machines all fitted with audio receivers and flatscreen TVs, a free weights area as well as a variety of group exercises including aerobics, yoga, pilates and world renown group exercise routines Les Mills’ Body Pump and Body Combat.
“The majority of people in Kuching want to look good and feel healthy but there aren’t many fitness centres to choose from. Currently, the only options available in Kuching are gyms fitted with out-of-date equipment, with weak programmes, priced exorbitantly, are cramped and poorly designed,” said Level Up Fitness founder and executive director Kenny Sia at the opening ceremony.
Other gyms usually charge their members additional fees for group exercises but at Level Up Fitness, all these are already included in the monthly RM119 membership fee,” Sia added.
“We are doing our best to provide members with as many services as possible so that they can make the most of their membership. There will be more
equipment and classes added as time goes on,” Sia continued.
Besides theses facilities, members will also be able to enjoy a fresh juice bar, a lounge, drink coolers and shower facilities.
To maximise members’ time at the gym, trained and qualified trainers are on hand to motivate and help members achieve their individual targets with customised exercise regimes.
“In Kuching, fitness centres are shunned because gym goers are often mistakenly stereotyped as muscular body builders. Nobody has yet stepped up to the
platform to spread the necessary knowledge and education to the masses,” Sia continued.
“This is a huge contrast to the situation in Peninsular Malaysia, where the fitness industry is experiencing an unprecedented boom. A large majority of working professionals there have gym memberships and
fitness centres serve as de facto ‘third stop’ for them between workplace and home,” Sia said.
Sia feels that the launch of the gym is timely as there is a lot of external support for such services.
“The fitness industry will continue to enjoy strong growth for at least the next 10 years, especially in Kuching. External forces – the media, government and the medical community – all support and encourage the public to exercise. These factors, combined with increasingly favourable demographics and a large pool of knowledgeable and experienced club professionals, bode well for the future of the fitness industry,” he concluded.

Eventhough I am a Sabahan, but I am so agree with you. Many towns and cities in Sarawak have good infrastructure, especially road system, great in its structure and perhaps well-planned. May b that Sarawak cities got more flat land for urban planning comparing KK which is hilly, however how would a city be a perfect urban area without a complete road system or more precisely transportation system? This is truthfully one of the thing that Sarawakian shud be proud of their government.

HRC or lessbian or gay is NOT an issue at all in Malaysia, it never been a norm for Malaysian anyway. Perhaps we as Malaysian is not yet as open-minded as the "luar negara", introducing HRC in here will not really bring "pride" to its citizens, not to mention how worse it will cause to the present situation.

One important thing for Kuchingites to take note is tat the arrogance of being so-called "orang bandar", from which i observed is owned by ppl of other states too, but much serious happened in Kch. In one way or another it is causing the social acceptance in Kch lower comparing with other states, although immigrations are still frequent in here due to its high economic performance. But if ppl is still reluctant to change tat, in future days cities with a higher social tolerance will catch up with Kch or perhaps overtook this place.

One thing you have to remember Kuching obtained its city status back in the 70's, KK was recent, what 7 years ago? In M'sia in general, one city will only start to embark its proper planning once it obtains city status.

I'm actually doubt whether you know what HRC is stand for, I simplified the name Hard Rock Cafe - HRC. Anyhow, HRC doesn't bring any sort of pride to a city. It's just symbol of what a city could offer when it comes to entertainment. And could you elaborate a lil bit more what did u mean by "how worse it will cause to the present situation." I've visited many HRC, and its just ordinary restaurant serving 'okay' food, the only special thing about it is the restaurant theme, its dedicated to live music performance. I just could not see any bad thing it will bring.

BTW, what is Rainbow Money???

aha, even Google cannot provide u the answer. It's a new economic term coined to describe the economic strategy to gain profit/money from gay (this group of people) through tourism, basically expanding the tourist group target.

I would love to see tesco or carrefour in Kuching. Better shopping standards, everything under one roof. But then you will really see all the small traditional shops disappear.

And how is it Hard Rock Cafe is for old folks and non hipsters? New hard rock cafes in West Malaysia now offer beach side facilities, convention halls on top of food and beverage services. Having one in Kuching would be great. It kinda sounds like Kuchingites being sour grapes at the fact that KK has one and we don't.

It's not a 'fact' that KK has one - it doesn't have it! They're just exploring setting one up there, along with Melaka. It's good to know that business is good - there's nothing to do with jealousy.
Most of the people I know, if you mention HRC, they will make snide remarks about the place and then laugh about the demographics (I'm pretty much a KL resident by the way). Seriously it's not a terribly cool place anymore, although if thats your thing then thats fine. To me, it's a joke to have something like this when it's not a big deal anymore. Where were they when it was the rage 10-15 years ago? ONly when it's dying then they come to KK la, Melaka la etc. By the way, the Planet Hollywood franchise is pretty much dead.

I don't meant for only HRC, i mean for other clubs or bars or high expenditure entertainment spot. I know many of us do make "pride" to ourselves that our cities got these high-cost lifestyle leisure places, just that you won't admit you look down on others which dont hav it.

May be it's time for you to think about the impact of these clubs to society, not to neglect the teenage youngsters, on the happy-go-lucky culture, including blowing money before realising where the hard-earned money come from and exposure to adult entertainment.

How is the chatter about Hard Rock Cafe being 'in' or not relevant to a thread regarding Kuching City's development? Having a large brand name does not necessarily bring in the crowds. Yes, it helps create an allegedly 'high profile' image for the city; but do you want a city to be remembered at 'the city with an outlet from that chain'?

Having something different from the norm is always good. It creates individuality and a sense of difference. Having eight shopping malls with the same shops in them does not bring the same experience as having four shopping malls with very distinct stores.

Dubai may be remembered for having the largest, tallest, widest, longest, weirdest, with 'outlets' of 'international chains,' but Doha somehow captures attention not via 'Bar X: Doha' but through culture and history. Having a well maintained and stocked museum has far better social benefits than having the most bubbly foam party.

p.s. do not underestimate the power of the pink dollar. Homosexual professionals have quite the amount disposable income, especially if it's a dual income couple with no kids. Social acceptance shows progression, and economic benefits.

KBOX is open I hear...and they say they are the largest in East Malaysia...anyone been there yet? How are the songs?

It is in my humble opinion that, the number of clubs and pubs is not the yardstick for measuring how "developed" a city is.

It is how the city halls runs the city, it is the quality of educations, and the quality of medical facilities, cleanliness, safety that makes a city a CITY.

Kuching has always been a place to get away from the hustle and bustle of the city, anyway most of the "yuppies" from Kuching are now working in KL, JB, Penang or even other cities worldwide...the number of clubs and pubs only cater for a few that are still in Kuching.

Despite this short coming, they still willingly call Kuching home. I for one only need "Senso"...old uncle like me not suitable go clubbing liaw...hahaha!

Cheers guy!

you're right, I was wrong on the details. But my point is, Kuching acquired its city status way earlier than KK. So, when it comes to infrastructural development along with economic activity, of course Kuching is doing better than KK.

It's not that very special of having HRC in KK or wherever. In some way, it becomes an indication of how prominent the city is.

It's not only sarawak but also other states. Most of the malls there are related to politicians too.

Sarawak is unique in a way that it always creates its own businesses or local franchises for instance bing! coffee, Scr and SB. The speculated miramar club can be nicer than HRC or zouk or whatever foreign chain if managed and planned properly. Lord white hair can bring in dozens of foreign goodies anytime.

Tesco or carrefour is another issue. It's just names. Tesco, from the UK seems nicer as it belongs to 'orang putih' and we always look up to them making them our idols.

But I'm glad that sarawak is not ctrlled by the current biggest political party from the west. Congratulations to our state government. Sarawak is one of the very few or the only state having surplus everywhere whereas other states always go bankrupt.

Regarding KIA Ctrl Tower, it might look old and do not match with the current design of KIA but the important thing is the efficiency of the workers there.

Enough said, let us not forget that, our culture and norms are getting more and more diluted each day.

3 days didnt read tis forum quite funny to see kk and kch forumers argue about pubs and HRC..well, let me add in some spices to the arguement..

well, if KK got their HRC, let them be.we have hundreds of pubs in kch tat u guys cant even visited all of them..talk about those around the chonglin, travillion, 101, 3rd mile & CBD..tats enough to make ur money flow dry from ur pocket..

well, 1 thing for sure.KK is a small centralised city, so the economic activity just concentrating into 1 place.tats y, HRC is considering to open 1 there.pls remember,HRC doesnt create so much impact.infact other major attraction whch can help to attract tourist such as our natural beauty & culture.

in term of size, i hate comparing this fact betwn kch & kk...well, kk forumers may think kk is bigger and developed than kch due to their 1 borneo & centralised city, but in fact, if u drive from kch city centre until kota padawan, tat is almost 20km strenched, u will find out tat kch devlepment is far beyond wat kk have now..sory but tat is the fact.my brother & sister in law who r sabahan admitted tis when they come here...so cheers..pls stop comparing this 2 cities becoz at the end of the day, u will still find out ur strenghth & ur weaknesses..

aha, even Google cannot provide u the answer. It's a new economic term coined to describe the economic strategy to gain profit/money from gay (this group of people) through tourism, basically expanding the tourist group target.

The proper term used is actually the "Pink Dollar"....google it will yield many results....

not fair to compare
both city has strenghth and weakness
some kuching like to compare kuching vs Singapore
besides population ( singapore 1950 already has 1 million population) singapore is the strategy location for both business and military in Asia.
how to compare with different condition ?
how do you know when kuching has 5 million population will not develop as good as singapore done ?

from other divisions of sarawak esp sri aman, kapit, sarikei, sibu & other rural areas due to more job opportunity. bintulu, miri and kuching are fast growing areas with brighter future than other towns in Sarawak. A lot of sarikeians and sibu people buy properties in kuching and when they retire, usually they will stay in kuching due to better healthcare. Many of their children also, are doing tertiary education in Kuching and Miri (curtin).

Elak berjalan kaki di kawasan sunyi, gelap - Polis
KUCHING 27 Okt.

Thanks nazrey for earlier posting..wanna share tis news to some who yet to read tis..i believe such an investment is the key indicator towrds city expansion & growth..

Manufacturing investments in Sarawak top RM7b
By Nancy Nais

ALMOST half of Malaysia's approved investments in the manufacturing sector so far this year went to Sarawak, reflecting the state's appeal among investors.
The resource-rich state received RM7.3 billion, or 46 per cent of the total. A quarter was from local companies, while the rest were from foreign firms, said International Trade and Industry Minister Datuk Mustapha Mohamad.

"The approval for the first six months indicates a strong participation by foreign investors in the manufacturing sector in Sarawak, particularly in capital intensive industries such as chemical, metal and wood products," he said at the launch of Sarawak Investment and Trade Dialogue and Seminar on Manufacturing and Service Sector in Kuching yesterday.

Apart from being rich with oil, gas and timber, Sarawak is also expected to have large hydro power plants, thanks to its rivers.

The biggest is the 2,400- megawatt Bakun station that is being built now.

Deputy Chief Minister Tan Sri Dr George Chan in his opening address said despite the global uncertainty, the state's economy managed to record 5 per cent growth last year.

"Our state economic growth rate is above the national growth of 4.6 per cent, and the growth in our manufacturing sector remained strong at 5.3 per cent," Chan said.

Chan strongly believe that Sarawak will remain as an attractive destination given the conducive environment, positive socio-economic growth and stable political scenario.

On the Sarawak Corridor of Renewable Energy (Score) development, Chan said the state government had earmarked 10 priority industries that include aluminum, steel and agriculture.

Chan said Score could provide a platform and synergy for the development of more small and medium enterprises (SMEs) by opening up various opportunities for expansion and development.

"In Sarawak, we would like to see the SMEs become important, supporting industries in major manufacturing clusters. The SMEs are strongly encouraged to establish links with large industries as suppliers of products and services," he added.

Tarikan Empangan Bengoh
Oleh SOPI SAMAILE
utusansarawak@utusan.com.my

KUCHING 3 Nov.

Score Attracts RM334 Billion In Proposed Investment

KUCHING, Nov 3 (Bernama) -- The Sarawak Corridor of Renewable Energy (Score) has already attracted interest from investors, especially those in the heavy, capital and energy-intensive industries, despite its infancy stage, Deputy Chief Minister Tan Sri Dr George Chan said on Tuesday.

Dr Chan, who is also State Industrial Development Minister, said 80 per cent or RM267 billion of the total proposed investment totalling RM334 billion, which would be spread over the next 20 years until 2030, came from the private sector.

"I want to reiterate that there are plenty of opportunities for everyone in Score, and for those of you who are still exploring to invest in Score, we invite you to come and work with us to realise your investment plans," he said when launching the International Energy Week 2009 (IEW 09) at the Borneo Convention Centre here.

The three-day international event, which saw 250 booths set up by 28 participating countries, is one of the initiatives undertaken by the Sarawak state government to promote business and investment opportunities in Score.

Dr Chan said a few multinational companies (MNCs) had made their decisions to invest in Score and the positive responses received so far exemplified its attractiveness as the preferred investment destination.

At this juncture, he said, works were progressing smoothly and on schedule to meet the tight timelines set by its investors, particularly in the Samalaju Industrial Park, Tanjung Manis and Mukah Industrial Estate.

"The development of all the infrastructure is critical and it is being closely monitored by the state and federal agencies to ensure timely completion," Dr Chan said, adding that the planning and development of access roads linking the hydropower dams such as Bakun and Murum to the industries were currently being undertaken.

He said Sarawak could offer MNCs the option to look for sites that were readily available as well as sustainable energy supply due to the state's potential to produce renewable energy, totalling 20,000 megawatts by 2030.

The state would also continue to take necessary steps to ensure that the development of Score, especially the energy sector in conforming to the standards set by the international communities, Dr Chan said.

This will be done through the social and environmental impact assessment study for enegery projects and the strategic social and environmental impact assessment study for the whole of Score.

"We would like to see in the long run that there is a steady development of industrial clusters for each of the 10 priority industries, including oil-based, aluminium, steel, glass, tourism, palm oil, timber-based, livestock, aquaculture and marine engineering," he said.
