Altough many pictures in this thread from 2005-2006, thread shows the renovation examples very well. I hope in 2010 more than half of the Istanbul will be renovated.

These are even individual renovations! There are even some made by the municipality which cover hundreds of buildings in groups. It's interesting to see this change. First, at the beginning of the 20th century Beyoglu was THE location in Istanbul. After 1950 people prefered to live in "modern" concrete apartments and the area was left empty or to poor people, homeless people, illegal immigrants, to criminals and now it's becoming trendy again since the beginning of the 90's!

Here you see the development of Beyoglu very well!

At the beginning of the 20th cetury. Commercial strip of Istanbul:

50's: Street opened to cars
http://img241.imageshack.us/img241/4033/istcadaq9.jpg

Some years later the nostalgic tram line doesn't exist anymore, the are getting more unattractive. Buildings full of signs.
http://img72.imageshack.us/img72/6902/istcad05se5.jpg

After 90's untit today:
Several renovations and restorations. The tram line is back and buildings are rented to high prices again.

Well we paid for a hotel in Taksim but due to an error with the travel agency, we we were obliged to stay in a hotel @ Laleli
We were angry at the beginning, but we finally enjoyed it, since it was very close to the historical center ;)

& Thank you for the pics, I don't recognize the street, it changed a lot !

The first steps were made by the municipality. They renovated whole streets or quarters at once. Investors saw that renovating old buildings and renting them is profitable so both sides keep renovating now. There is still so much to do... Normally the municapilty renovates just one small area in order to make it attractive and private investors who see that began to renovate the buildings aroud this renovated area so the number of renovated buildings increases day by day.

Istanbul definitely heading in the right direction here. The improvement of standard of living is immeasurable but must be considerable - the unseen benefits, socially, economically, culturally. I bet if you did this to all run down areas crime, and the cost of crime, would be down.

Messi

Crime and renovation? How are they linked to eachother?

Btw Istanbul is already the safest city in Europe. I think you are wrong with your theory.

ISTANBUL, Turkey — Istanbul is the safest major city in Europe, according to the 2006 European Crime and Safety Survey. Governor of Istanbul Province Muammer Guler presented the findings Tuesday (March 20th). The data shows the crime rate in Istanbul was 18% last year, compared to 32% in London, 27% in Amsterdam, 26% in Belfast and Dublin, 24% in Copenhagen, 23% in Stockholm, 20% in Brussels, and 19% in Rome.

In other news, Istanbul hosted the 5th meeting of the International Reconstruction Fund Facility for Iraq on Monday. Iraqi Minister of Planning and Development Co-operation Ali Baban was there, along with 130 representatives of the international community. (NTV Aina, Xinhua- 20/03/07)

when talking about crime rates guys I meant if we did this kind of thing in my hometown, London, I'm sure the crime would decrease. The fact Istanbul has the lowest crime rate in Europe shows that.
