Dumbof April 17th, 2008, 10:38 PM The colour of the seats is ugly and inapropriate for Roma and Lazio.
lpioe April 17th, 2008, 10:42 PM @GNU: The ones behind the goal in the last pic need to be replaced for the CL final next year because they have no backrest.
I don't know if the light blue ones on the sideline stands will be replaced aswell.
Sercan, do you know when they started with the replacement?
In Camp Nou they started doing it a few years ago and still not finished :(
Delmat April 17th, 2008, 11:10 PM Great thing for Stadium and I think it supposed to happen a lot earlier.
Does anybody know why UEFA has different criteria for stadium requirements?
Example is that UEFA ordered my club (Hajduk Split, Croatia) to put seats with backrest on Poljud stadium in order to play European matches (UEFA Cup). Club ofcourse did that 5 or 6 years ago and crowd is ofcourse much happier since then.
But I see that UEFA tolerated Roma and Lazio and they played even Champions League. Although they are more famous teams I think it's not fair :)
And i must post pic to show that our stadium is not shitty

Delmat. I have no idea.
San siro has got thousands of seats without backrest

And San Siro even has hosted a CL Final. But maybe the new UEFA requirements are stricter now than they were before.
G.C. April 18th, 2008, 02:40 AM And San Siro even has hosted a CL Final. But maybe the new UEFA requirements are stricter now than they were before.
Correct. Seats with out a back rest have been outlawed by UEFA.
The stadium looks 1000 times better already even with the small percentage of new seats.
krudmonk April 18th, 2008, 03:11 AM Get rid of the track. This isn't 1900.
GNU April 18th, 2008, 10:08 AM Are there any plans to lower to the pitch?
lpioe April 18th, 2008, 10:43 AM Delmat, quite strange that your club had to change them. In Marseille and Lyon for example the seats behind the goal have also no backrests.
I thought only for CL and UEFA cup final all seats need backrests.
MonsieurAquilone April 18th, 2008, 11:20 AM Get rid of the track. This isn't 1900.

Plus the fact that Rome hasn't given up on bidding and hosting for another Summer Olympics. So that stadium would be the centerpiece of a renewed bi.

They would bid for another Olympics with a stadium which is more than 70 years old???? Are you joking? If Roma succeeds in hosting Olympics again they should build another brand-new stadium as a main stadium.
The current Olimpico cannot serve as a main venue for Olympics however nice it is renovated! It's too old to host Olympic.
You have no reason to object to getting rid of the tracks and turning Olympico into football specific stadium. The current Olympico with ugly athletics tracks is of help to neither football nor Olympics.
salaverryo April 26th, 2008, 11:25 PM Just remember that Stadio Olìmpico was an athletics stadium before it was a football stadium as well.
Exactly. And it's called "Olimpico" because it was built for the 1960 Summer Olympics, held in Rome.

they would do a complete renovation.. the stadium would be brand new but keep the feel of the old stadium.. have you ever seen soldier field?.. take a look they could do that to the olimpico
BobDaBuilder April 27th, 2008, 02:07 PM ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
He walked away from it. No foreigner is allowed to control an Italian club.
So there will not be any Lazio stadium.
Besides I have been to Rome's Olympic stadium for a match and it was not too bad. Great atmosphere.

Rome Derby, no?
BobDaBuilder April 28th, 2008, 01:55 AM I went there once and it had more people than seats. I had an allocated seat and the only way I could get to a spot to watch the match was using sheepdog tactics to clamber over the Roma supporters.
So yes, it gets sold out alright. But that was a derby.

Maybe so, but...uhmmm, LA's Memorial Coliseum was built for the 1932 Olympics, and worked superbly in 1984. Barcelona's Montjuic stadium was also something from the 30s, and it worked beautifully in 1992. So what are you talking about?
It's easy to talk about building from scratch when it isn't your money.

IHaveNoLegs June 26th, 2008, 03:05 AM perhaps the new seats take up more room than the old ones
Jim856796 June 26th, 2008, 11:09 AM The stadium was constructed in 1937 and was renovated in 1990 fir the FIFA World Cup held that year.
lpioe June 26th, 2008, 02:00 PM Italian Wiki has a small text concerning the reduction of seats:
Nel 2009 ospiterà la finale di Champions League: dal 2008 è stato avviato un restyling per rendere lo stadio completamente a norma, con miglioramenti per la sicurezza, sostituzione dei sedili e una riduzione dei posti a sedere a 72.698.
From what I understand its because of improvements in safety and substitution of seats (they new ones probably take more space as IHaveNoLegs already said).
www.sercan.de June 26th, 2008, 02:51 PM Wow, 10,000 seats is a lot.
Strange to have a 72k olimpico now
sirCoolek June 26th, 2008, 05:16 PM Yeah, that sounds weird:/ Now, the capacity of the stadium is just 72 000 and it's hard to get used to it.
But hey, the average attendence on Roma's games has decreased significantly so maybe there is no need for a bigger stadium.
hngcm June 27th, 2008, 06:20 AM Ugly stadium....for soccer at least.

Sir, if Rome bids for another Olympics, they cannot build a new stadium because it would end up being a white elephant. A city can have a stadium with a track be the main stadium no matter how old it is as long as it is not falling into disrepair or closed for an extreely long time. And I am not getting rid of the track and converting it into a football-specific stadium. If either of these things happen, a Rome Olympics would look messed up.
EADGBE July 6th, 2008, 10:59 PM The colour of the seats is ugly and inapropriate for Roma and Lazio.
Er, hello? Azzuri - inappropriate? It's not just the two Rome teams who play there, it's also the closest thing Italy has to a national stadium.

Actually, I'd say for a multi-sports stadium (i.e. athletics and field sports), this is one of the best. The views for football are considerably better than they are in a number of other athletics stadia (as the picture in page one of this thread would suggest). I don't think an athletics track is ever ideal for field sports but there will always be varying degrees of problems and the problems are fairly minimal here, when compared with elsewhere. In terms of it, especially given continued athletics use, this is far from an ugly stadium for any of the sports that take place there.

it's for security reasons, if I remember correctly. Bigger barrers, new seats... about them I heard, speaking with a policeman friend, that they don't like seats with backrests and strongly opposed to their introduction in Italy. reason? they're too easy to be taken off and easier to be launched at them aswell.
berkshire royal December 21st, 2008, 07:42 PM ^^
Seats with backrests are only a problem when you have cheap ones installed like they have done stupidly in Rome and Milan. If they the seats that are common place in England, Australia, US etc. believe when I tell you they are much harder to take break and they are much better looking and are also much more comfortable. Seriously why is the Champions League going to Rome, I went to the Olimpico in 1995 and it wasn't great then let alone now (as far as I know nothing has been done to modernise it inbetween then and now) why does UEFA insist in having the CL final in a stadium that shouldn't be hosting the final when there are plenty of better options :ohno:.
Jim856796 December 26th, 2008, 09:22 PM The Stadio Olimpico looks a lot different from the condition it had during the 1960 Summer Olympics. How was this stadium transformed for the 1990 World Cup Final? Was the 1960 condition of this stadium built in 1937 or it had to be renovated before the Olympics as well?

I'm a not an expert about those kind of seats, but I've seen them being taken off and used as missiles also in Poland and Genoa. In Liguria the seats are different from those used in Roma, since they're completely made in steel and folding (not the backrest, sorry for the poor explanation). The scums who use them as missiles may also have some tools for unlocking them, who knows?
About the Olimpico, I was surprised too when I heard it would host the CL Finals... but I hope this opportunity will be used to modernise it. it desperately needs some refurbishment: I'm speaking about comfort, bars, toilets, CCTVs... not just seats!

Why should they bother about a match between an English and a Spanish team? Honestly, this kind of advice just serves to add fuel to the flames, and I sincerely hope Roman hooligans don't read the English press.
Under normal conditions you have a much better chance of getting stabbed taking a walk in South London than outside the Olympic Stadium wearing a Man Utd shirt.

Will the British Foreign office listen to that? Nope. Everything you see in the papers is from either when an English football team has played in Rome against Roma or its crap from the Foreign office. According to our press the Police are meant to be shutting this bridge down where fans have been fighting in the past but in the ticket booklet it openly says use the tram and unless they want everyone to walk around or swim across, I don't really know what its getting at. You should read the advice for Americans visiting the UK. Most of it would get in a comedy.

I've just found out why the Italians have been getting away with this stabbing of fans for so long and why it keeps happening. According to Italian law if someone stabs you below waist height they basically get let off. So some prick on a moped rides past and stabs you in the arse, you done and he gets let off for attempted murder. Theres no deterrent.
United were going to do a mosaic before it came clear that the fans had been planning to do a better one anyway which they had most of the funding for. They were going to do that 'believe' again until they were contacted by SEF and now the club have offered to pay(its in the £1000s). What UFEA have to do with it, I don't know.

Its classed as a misdemeanour as its unlikely to cause a death. Considering everytime an English has travelled to Rome or other another Italian city someone has been stabbed it doesn't sound like bull shit. The law must be weak if it allows this to happen.... 2 Chelsea fans were stabbed Turin by Juve fans, an Arsenal was stabbed by Roma fans, 3 Boro fans were stabbed in Rome in 2006, 3 United fans were stabbed in 2007, 19 Liverpool fans were stabbed in Rome in 2001 during two games. What have the Italian FA or UFEA done about it? They rewarded Rome with Champions League final.

Stabbing is by no means a misdemeanour according to Italian law. It's a crime and the penalty is up to 12 years in prison (no less than 6 years if the injury is irreparable. If death results, no less than 21 years).
People involved in fights are always troublemakers from both parts who do it deliberately. Just stay away from them and use police escort if provided. There's nothing to be worried about, despite what your press is trying to tell you.
Just to put things into perspective, 162 people were murdered in London (pop 7.5m) in 2007 (btw, does it mean the law is weak over there?) compared to 40 in the Province of Rome (pop 4m).

You won't get stabbed for wearing a football shirt or supporting your team in any UK City. You will in Italy.
So the press isn't wrong. A cut or a slash means they'll get less than 6 years or likely let off.

What is the capacity for the game? Does anyone know what kind of allocation both teams have been given?
(fabrizio) May 25th, 2009, 05:05 PM You won't get stabbed for wearing a football shirt or supporting your team in any UK City. You will in Italy.
So the press isn't wrong. A cut or a slash means they'll get less than 6 years or likely let off.
yes, you get stabbed for being in the wrong South London baby-gang...
Its AlL gUUd May 25th, 2009, 09:35 PM its very dissapointing how UEFA can't seem to grasp that there is a problem with fans in Italy, even some of the people on here can't see it. :ohno: its disgusting the amount of foreign football fans that have been attacked in Italy. one should not be threatened with being stabbed possibly even killed when travelling abroad to support your team. if this was happening in England the team would not be allowed to compete in Europe let alone be allowed to host an European final.
bigbossman May 26th, 2009, 12:04 AM ^^it's not just foreigners who get stabbed it's anyone not Roman, many italians get stabbed when they travel away to Rome. The fact of the matter are that this will be a totally different situation to a match against Roma, for a start Roma aren't playing, and there will be 30,000+ manchester united fans present not 3-4,000.
It's always the if this was happening in England bullshit, the fact of the matter is, it is outside of the stadium and when English clubs were banned it was inside the stadiums and after over a decade of repeat offences.
To the Italians comparing this to London, stop it!

67,000, Teams have been given 19,500 tickets each. From what am looking at there are gonna alot more than 30,000 United fans in Rome. FOC were expecting 30,000 English fans to travel to Rome, 5 days ago they put that up to 40,000. No Visas this year and its not as far.
Its expected 50,000 fans will fly into Romes two airports alone. 110 planes will land at Fiumicino(English I think) and 40 planes into Ciampino (Spainish). Alot from Barca are on the coaches. I only know afew people flying directly into Rome. Loads are flying to Milan, Pisa, Nice, Venice(then hiring cars or getting the train), some are getting the train from London and I know about 40 lads who are driving over.

Why?
Have you ever seen our Foreign Office issuing warnings against travels to London? Or our press fanning the flames before a match against an English team?
After the final everybody will realise how ridiculous this has been, despite the efforts to stir up troubles.
(fabrizio) May 26th, 2009, 06:13 PM To the Italians comparing this to London, stop it!
Honestly, I love London and the U.K. as a whole (let alone King's Lynn and Swindon, sorry) but I felt like I had to say what I said. Look at the statistics: London has got enormous problems with gangs but nobody here did try to call it "Stab City" 'cause it shows how filled with prejudice are those who do so.
I know Daily Mail is a tabloid good just to get the fries into it, but this doesn't change the reality: a whole city sees its reputation ruined by some pricks.
bigbossman May 26th, 2009, 07:01 PM Look Italians, it's ignorant people calling it stab city, our media is rubbish!
If you read my post i was supporting the fact that this is hyperbole.
I just don't see the point of bringing in London's gang problem which has nothing to do with football (mainly because the kids can't afford the ridiculous prices), where as this has something to do with football.
The italian foreign office may not warn you not to venture to London blah blah, but surely they do warn you to stick to the touristy areas, afterall it is common sense that you don't go to specific places after dark in London unless you are looking for a fight.

Careful with these comparisons. Manslaughter and homicide cases are not being counted separately in England.

As one Rome taxi driver put it. The Catalans are our brothers and treat us and our city with respect, they don't get drunk and mess up the place.

bahamut88 May 27th, 2009, 01:49 PM come on guys, you are being overworried. Every big city had its problems, so does Rome. Even I when I came to London was a bit scared because we often hear on the tv and read on journals that London is the city where most stabbing happens, but sadly it's quite normally that things like that nowadays happens in every city of the world. Rome it's not like Lagos! I think your journals make you worry too much about speaking of Rome as the stab city.
And about this :
Manchester United fan stabbed in Rome.
4 "brave" Italians have been arrested.
It was not a Manunited fan.
Just be a citizen of the world and enjoy the city, if no one provokes no one get stubbed, that's for sure. Let's hope our Manchester and Barcellona friend could have fun without incidents.

massp88 May 27th, 2009, 07:19 PM Why is it that UEFA trims the available seats for the Champions League final. They trimmed some 5,000 seats this year and last year in Moscow, it looks like they trimmed 10,000 seats (assuming the game sold out, it did right?)
www.sercan.de May 28th, 2009, 11:56 AM IMO because of the bad view they do not sell the first 3-5 rows at Athletic stadium.

(fabrizio) May 28th, 2009, 06:54 PM what matters is it has been a beautiful evening of football, with almost no violence, as football should be. I'm happy that Rome manage to handle properly such an event... the only thing I didn't like was the award-winning ceremony which was a little bit too small, no fireworks or a big stage, and of course Berlusconi standing on the pitch.
Pincio May 28th, 2009, 06:55 PM It seems that English newspapers enjoyed the final match in Rome

In praise of... the road to Rome
Editorial The Guardian
Thursday 28 May 2009
Whichever team you supported last night, Rome was indisputably a good venue for the Champions League football final between Barcelona and Manchester United. In fact, the choice of Rome was better than good. Two thousand years after Emperor Augustus, the idea that all roads in Europe lead ultimately to the Eternal City still has powerful symbolic resonance. Rome may no longer be the political - let alone artistic or spiritual - capital of Europe. Italy may not live up to the rose-tinted image in which too many insist on seeing it. Yet Italy's capital city retains a pan-European glamour and vibrancy that few cities - and certainly not the continent's dull political capital, Brussels - can rival. All of this made Rome the best possible venue for a contest which, pitting the pre-eminent football team of northern Europe against the pre-eminent team of the south, united and engaged the people of this continent in ways that next month's European elections cannot rival. The contrast with the 2008 final, played in Moscow and finishing at nearly 1am local time, was wholly to Rome's advantage. All of which raises the obvious question: why not make Rome's Stadio Olympico the permanent home of Europe's football cup final? In England, the FA Cup is always (after a brief exile in Cardiff) played at Wembley. In Scotland, a similar role is played by Hampden Park. A Champions League final played each May in Rome would soon have a similarly inevitable and irresistible aura.

im gonna disagree right there, the air was kind of smoky , or i dont know how to describe it but the air did not look very clear ... and they didnt cover the track behind the goal , which in my opinion is a HUGEEE fail cause i think that ugly redbrown track make a stadium look old and wore down ... every stadium with a track ,except for berlin , should cover the entire track with a more pleasing and frech colour .. like they did at Ernst Happel in Euro 2008 ...

The air was smokey because fire works and fares were let off. The ground had an amazing atmosphere, 100 times better than anything Wembley could produce but it was very run down. Bird shit on the seats, which weren't really seats. Just plastic buckets, everyone was stood the whole game going mad anyway.

Kapow32 June 3rd, 2009, 06:24 AM possibly stupid question but here goes: Do tournament organizers sometimes prefer having a track around the stadium because it serves as a sort of barrier or moat between the crazy fans on the ends of the stadium and the field?

Maybe they see that as an advantage, but not a turning point.
Now the next 3 finals will be in football specific stadiums, Bernabeu, Wembley, Allianz.

No, they just want big stadiums in the major cities and until recently they tended to be National multi-purpose stadiums.
