This is a "general" construction thread where you can post skyline shots of London. They must be recent pics, and preferably long distance views that
show a portion of the skyline with cranes etc. The idea is that, rather than having photos spread all over the place, they can be collated together in one
thread. You can still continue to post pics in other threads, of course (!), but there's now the option of having the best ones duplicated here.

Each year I'll create a new thread, so we can archive the old ones and look back at how the skyline evolved. Thanks to Chest for suggesting this, btw...
a great idea, as the regional forums have similar threads which have proved to be extremely popular.

I'll start this off. Here's the current view from Waterloo Bridge, taken by me a few weeks back -

Here's one i took from Hampstead Heath a few weeks ago - there are a few construction sites if you look around (Pan Peninsula, Broadgate, The Shard etc. )

excellent stuff, two great starts to the thread, there are so many great skyline shots that many of us miss because they are all spread about..I've never even seen Wills opening pic of this thread before.

- Dashwood House is now nearly reclad
- the cores of Drapers Gardens now up

- Stock Exchange now reclad
and loads of other cranes for numerous other schemes to many to list.

Yeah, from some angles the Willis building really does lack presence, another 25m on the height would have made all the difference....still a superb quality building up close though.

Willis is too dark and too mundane from that angle. A shame they didn't incorporate CABE's suggestion of slightly twisting the 'shells' at different angles instead of the face on version we got; maybe then we would get more of silver sides showing in this angle.

wow the city looks great from this angle...

what I love about London and you get a sense of it in Mikeys picture is the sheer scale of the place. At night from a good vantage point it stretches out for miles - and now thanks to more and more high rise structures we have red warning lights, night lighting schemes - (the Londn Eye is now a multi coloured light show), blinking lights, lazers, crane lights - I love it. Franfurt and other cities may have better clusters at the moment but London wins hands down with the scale of its massive urban landscape.

That's an astonishing photo. My first thought was that it simply had to be a montage - how on earth can CW and Big Ben be off in the same direction?

Well it turns out they're pretty much due east - Uli Harder took it from the Queen's Tower (http://www3.imperial.ac.uk/aboutimperial/historyofthecollege/queenstower) at Imperial College.

Viewing gallery
The viewing gallery presents an unrivalled panorama of London. The absence of tall buildings in the vicinity of the Tower means that there is an uninterrupted view of London in all directions. It is estimated that the furthest visible point is 20 miles away in good viewing conditions. The Tower is not open to the public at present.

Or one of the most powerful and influential cities in the world for that matter.

Then again, you could say the same about Washington, which, for an American city, is very underwhelming. I guess when a city is so powerfull it doesn't need to show off with big towers. They're just the icing on the cake;)

- yes the views are great - but the skyline is a long way away - I had the zoom on around 18x to get that though I think your camera is a lot better than mine - if you walk up the hill and wander down the main street (turn left) every road that comes off it heading down has a great view of the City - though its very hazy as usual in London across that distance.

Looking foward to seeing all the cranes rising from the City in both pics. Heron = 3, Bishopsgate = 3 or 4?, Leadenhall = (I heard 4 cranes), the first one is begging for a future skyline render, with 100 Middlesex Street there too. Broadgate looks nice poking up at the back of the first pic.

hmmm that view worries me in regards to the new towers proposed on the bishops gate goods yard, very close to st pauls and equally the tower of London, don't look Boris!

Love the last photo, London is forever in constant change and evolution no over skyline is like it apart from say Dubai but that doesn't count.

mine only goes up to 18x also, unless you reduce the megapixels to 3. it's a panasonic lumix FZ-18

snap - same camera - massively cheap with a mega zoom and good Intelligent Auto - downside - get quite a bit of noise though - if I can be bothered usually photo shop the noise out.
Red Bull Air Race was absolutely brilliant - those pilots are incredible, one of the most exciting things i've ever seen.

I was in London last week and stood by the Globe Theatre looking across the city of London. It was like de ja vu from the late 80's early 90's. Yet again London has turned into the worlds largest building site. I remeber Canary Wharf with projects being abandoned and unfinished projects. The same thing has happened again and the credit crunch is not the only thing that London can blame it on. The projects such as Riverside South, The Pinnacle, The Shard, 20 Fenchurch Street , Beetham Tower , St Georges Wharf, The Leadenhall Projects and Wood Wharf could have been passed and built during the boom periods and London would have set the trend for commercial and resedential developments. London's planning regulations to a degree i agree with such as preserving heritage sites and views of them, on the otherhand the red tape and planning regulations are over the top. People and organisations have a right to object but if you live in the centre of a major international city like London you should expect the place tobe fast and furious in terms of change. I agree that the City of London what i call the Old Town is fragile and after watching Britain from Above does not like change often could and should have had The Pinnacle and Leadenhall on the way up by know. Canary Wharf faces less objectives as its adopted a American style grid system but why dosent the government realise that the City Airport is in the wrong place. I once read that there were once or still maybe plans to build and airport further east down the Thames Estuary for a new major Airport. This would sort out the height restrictions and able planners and developers to build more elaborate structures. I feel the Gherkin should have been only the start and not the begining of the end for new world class structures in London. Lets hope that if and when the next boom comes round we will get the skyscrapers London should be building plus maybe some projects that could rise from the dead such as Columbus Tower, Aldgate Tower and Minerva. Stratford City our only hope makes me feel depressed. My message to all councils, planners, investors,English Heritage and the Mayor of London is pull your fingers out next time.

There is a certain amount of irony about this topic for me. Over several years there has been English Heritage going on about protecting views of London. The response of the cities has been demolish several structures over the past few years and not knowing if they can build a replacement structure due to the financial markets. What has happened there is know better views from the South Bank and beyond of The Tower of London and St Pauls in decades. Carefull English Heritage what you wish for the fairy godmother may just grant you this wish.

... planning regulations are over the top...

I completely agree. Heathrow T5 took what - 6 years to approve? The new Beijing entire airport took 4 years to approve and build. I lived in South Korea for a bit and the way they adapt to new things amazed me. I know there are various reasons related to history why each country is different in this regard, but still - any organism that doesnt remain flexible and adapt to change will die. Great to have debate before action but we've just had a prolonged period of economic growth so these should have been built already, not just approved.

twilight_2008
September 4th, 2008, 01:00 AM
Once this credit crisis is over, London will be in its biggest ever construction boom. I think history should have no part at all in threatening development of cities and countries, the old and the new should sit together. Hopefully, when London's biggies like the Shard are complete, people's views will forever change to modern buildings, including skyscrapers.

In answer to your question, no, the citigroup's lighting scheme has always looked like that. The only thing that has changed is with HSBC's crown which was all lit up in white, but now turned off "to save the environment".

And/Or cloudy, rainy and damp if the past few years are anything to go by. :)

I look forward to winter and spring now, as we tend to get lots more sunny days (cold, but sunny).

And the London skyline looks fantastic on a sunny winters day, the sunset making everything look orange, with the lights blinking on for miles around - something you just don't see in summer.

- a couple of skyline shots so people don't get annoyed when they click on and see no pics - another good thing about winter is the very low sun - allows the buildings to glisten.

^^ I agree it looks awful. Face brick and concrete dont age well in the UK climate anyway. The bare brick needs decorating with cornicing which can be painted to uplift the look, but without this it ages badly. I think brick has continued to be used here for new buildings to be "sympathetic" to the surrounding area which is invariably Victorian terraced, and then ruined by giving it a "modern twist". So it's neither Victorian nor modern. They also seemed to build a lot on the cheap - in 1981 the last thing they cared about was making it look beautiful and we end up with half measures... something that continued in the docklands until a couple of years ago from what I can tell. Still, it beats what was there.
