Hehe, I just noticed that. Maybe the not so conservative fashion types would be restricted to a few wards as these pics were taken in very public and crowded areas.

True.

I guess back in the 80s Japan still looked to other western nations for influence when it came to fashion.

One of my students told me this.Apparently the Japanese started going nuts in the Harajiku in the 70s but didnt truely experiment without the west untill the early 90s,which reached the mainstream by the late 90s.

When I see pictures of my school parties back in the mid 90s everyone is dressed very conservatively.Something happened in 1997 I think?

From that year the women started wearing sexy leather, cowboy hats, short skirts and all that other wonderful stuff I see everyday.

For the record.I came to Japan in 1999.Just at the end of the leather, cowboy hat and boot phase.Yippie!!!

Lovely pictures. From what I can see Tokyo looks even cleaner in the 1980s than it is now.

I wish I could have been working in Japan in the 80s.... it really was the leading country in the world then.

There was another thread with photos of Tokyo in the 80s... can the photos on that thread be transferred to this one?

Hi there,

I wonder if you could post old pictures of Tokyo especially during the early 20th century. Is Tokyo 'prosperous' back then? I am so curious how progressive Japan is back in those times.

Please close this thread if there is already an existing one.

When I saw this famous pic of Edo, I wanted to shoot a pic to see the current view of the same place. Unfortunately (or not), I just found some cool blogger (http://cliff-pinder.blog.so-net.ne.jp/archive/c5377553-1) already had the same idea.

This is the view of exaclty the same place (http://maps.google.com/maps?hl=ja&q=%E6%B8%AF%E5%8C%BA%E6%84%9B%E5%AE%951-5-3&ie=UTF8&oe=UTF-8&ll=35.66478,139.74839&spn=0.00309,0.005236&t=h&z=18), 2008.

I would like to know that too, but I suspect there isn't any (for Tokyo).
Your closest bet may be searching Yahoo! Japan Auction (http://search.auctions.yahoo.co.jp/jp/search/auc?p=%CF%A9%C0%FE%BF%DE) to buy the maps by yourself.

With the restructuring it's more easy to look back into the past to find some interesting but forgotten threads. This one gave me the idea to search for 1980s pictures of Tokyo on Flickr.

I found this interesting set by CanadaGood with pictures from 1983 and 1985.

That was a time when Japan was one of the richest countries in the world.

What do you mean "was"? It still is the third largest economy in the world, even with a land area smaller than the state of California, with even less space available for habitation (only 20% of the total).

commuter rail station in Tokyo

Likely Hamamatsucho. Note the early automatic faregates. BTW, I believe it was Hankyu Rlwy. that first started widely using automatic gates in its stations.

Merci beaucoup, c'est très intéressant! Thank you very much, it is very interesting. It would be good to have more images from older times. Such a shame that old buildings were not kept.

Agree!

I love these old photos.

But about the buildings, you know Tokyo was burned a few times, and then the war.
