Raheja Legend -- Worli, Mumbai

http://img410.imageshack.us/img410/4062/image2uk1.jpg

The 40-story residential Raheja Legend is one of the first modern skyscrapers to come up since the Indian economic boom. Not to be confused with the similarly sized and named "The Legend" at Walkeshwar, Raheja Legend is a developed by K Raheja Universal and designed by P&T Group of Singapore, and is one of Raheja Builders's first major skyscraper projects in the city.

Like most of Raheja Universal's buildings the design has been changed repeatedly through the last couple years to a far more glassy and classy design, reflecting Indian economic growth and the increasing expectations of the Indian consumer.

It's first design was a very ho-hum concrete tower, painted with what would have been an atrocious shade of blue:
http://img246.imageshack.us/img246/8803/rahejalegendelevej1.jpg

In Feb, 2007, a new design was suddenly being promoted all over Mumbai. Raheja Universal seemed not to even acknowledge the older design, as seen in this photo by nervi1 @ flickr:
http://img99.imageshack.us/img99/60/2332627040061416106sgmxze0.jpg
^ The first time the new rendering of Raheja Legend is revealed above the Worli placename, on a hoarding in South Mumbai

This new design was a far better, but still not eye-catching, semi-glass cladded design. The height was also scaled upwards some. The newer design reflected the trend towards art deco-throwback architecture in Mumbai, popularized by its neighbor RNA Mirage.
http://img108.imageshack.us/img108/4164/rahejalegendlarge16gg.jpg
^ The second design at night

The latest (and final) design came late last year. According to the architects, this new iteration of Raheja Legend is "inspired by the billowing wind-filled sails of boats along the Bombay coastline." The building is one of the forebearers of what I unscientifically term the 'swooshy' trend in many new buildings in Mumbai, with its glass cladding and crown. The design has won Raheja the Best Developer - Residential Award (Future) design at Cityscape India 2007 last december:
http://img87.imageshack.us/img87/4665/rahejalegenddy2ri6.jpg
^ The finalized design

It is worth noting that the design was finalized after construction had actually started. Hence the podium of the tower is similar in structure to the second design.

Raheja Legend is one of the first groundbreaking skyscrapers to come up at Worli, paving the way for increasingly taller buildings that have culminated in the numerous supertalls proposed in the area today. It is located next to RNA Mirage, also u/c:

http://img139.imageshack.us/img139/2180/2dm3.jpg (http://img139.imageshack.us/img139/3262/22c993d7rf4.jpg) http://img139.imageshack.us/img139/5590/182mn2.jpg (http://img139.imageshack.us/img139/4469/12c9a396fl9.jpg)
^ The next door RNA Mirage

The location and design of both towers will ensure commanding views and a greater funkiness to the growing Worli skyline.

Well to be honest, this side-profile is the best look of this building, otherwise it's a very ordinary stapled-up design like the Suraj building in Prabhadevi. Albeit that one is unique because it was a first of it's kind in the late 90's and also it's pencil thin shape gives it some more unique reference.

Don't know what sort of cladding has been chosen for Raheja Legend, so maybe the verdict is still not out until that is done and over with.

There was a building earlier which housed a MNC pharmaceuticals ofiice called Raptakos brett & co., they wanted to redevelop the building so they demolised it, but that was long time back. Its been stuck ever since.

One worker without shoes and the other worker has pair of sandals and no helmet. Pretty sad.

I think he does not have shoes because it is easier to stand there with better grip and Sandals are something like pseudo shoes in India ... even I used to hardly wear shoes in India .. always those sandals :)

BTW I see he has at least good safety equipement to protect from falling !!

IN India we lack sense of safety .. home it is improving !!

One of them got called in to work when he had a day off and he forgot his work gear. Hence they shared it. :)

If that were the case, work shoes wouldn't have been invented.

I guess there is hardly a concept of shoes in those laborers let alone "working shoes"

anyways my point was that they mostly wear sandal and then its easier to climb if u open ur sandals ... we need more stringent safety rules though !!

my friend works in NTPC and he said that in 6 months he worked there 4 labors burnt to death in same way but still they keep on doing the work all the same .. no changes !! :(

Confirmed news about the construction site adjacent to legend
It was caught in a legal issue earlier but now construction has commenced which will house the pharmaceutical MNC's headquaters plus a 5 star medical centre. Proposed year of completion is 2012.

They should build it in a prominant location for a great skyline.

They can just build it in the same site of the present tower cuz It stands right in front of the Bandra Worli Sea Link....Which would be a beautiful sight from the bridge.

And yeah, its gotta be tall and unique/futuristic. None of the present towers are futuristic except for the one in china (don't remember its name). If we ever get one, we gotta beat that.

A new communications tower can just increase the beauty of Worli, one of the most famous areas of Mumbai to a great extent. We should take examples from Guangzhou, Tokyo, Shanghai etc..

:ohno: Another plain Jane from the Raheja stable is ready. Finally!! Sorry to be a party pooper, but this skyscraper adds no value to the costly real estate in this area, because there is no great design value that comes along with it. Yes, it is a tall building with some really costly apartments, and who says every skyscraper in India has to be ICONIC?!

PS: A lot of design similarities are to be noticed between Raheja one @ altamount rd; Raheja @ haji ali, and this one. Just an observation on aesthetics, nothing more to it...
