View Full Version : Art Deco Singapore
joydivision April 21st, 2008, 11:43 AM Hey how about some nice cool pics of Art Deco buildings here in Singapore. We have so many little Art Deco classics yet they stand quietly, unadored, unappreciated and unloved...:ohno:
My personal favourite: the Hoover Hotel on Balestier Road.

redstone April 21st, 2008, 01:05 PM I always keep on forget to post photos of art deco buildings. There's an old thread somewhere here.
RafflesCity April 21st, 2008, 05:27 PM Many shophouses sport the art-deco look. I believe theyre conserved.

Ugly??!?!? They're beautiful! I love art deco architecture, those clean lines are so pleasing to the eye. Singapore has some wonderful examples of art deco architecture, as much of it should be conserved as possible.
Lestatlenoir April 23rd, 2008, 01:40 PM ^^ cannot agree more!. These art deco buildings should be conserved in any way possible. Personally, I LOVE art deco style. It is simple and elegant in its own way.

Andrew April 25th, 2008, 12:45 AM Those Tiong Bahru flats are some of the best examples of that architecture I've seen anywhere. My only problem with the area is that people put up bars over their windows and those metal shades sticking out above the windows, which look messy.

Yup... if only the gahmen wold do like what UK does... sponsor the $$ for owner reinstate the facade to its former glory... spruce up the streets (cobble it like Emerald Hill), put in water features or a meandering stream, have The Link conduct guided tours for tourist & hey presto... will be on World Heritage Site list... a quick and not too expensive way to be on the world's map!
Passion April 25th, 2008, 12:19 PM Cannot be!!!!
I recalled Emerald Hill Rd, once the URA & LTA intiated the landscaping and the retiling works. The property there undergoes mutiple appreciation in value.
This is at the expense of tax payer.
redstone April 25th, 2008, 03:09 PM Seriously Tiong Bahru stands a great chance of World Heritage Site status, maybe greater had the whole area remained intact (many of the 1950s ones had been demolished)

One of the lesser known Art Deco fixtures around, but still a handsome one.
redstone May 4th, 2008, 12:04 PM Tanjong Pagar Station, Whitehouse are good examples of Art Deco
