Chick is hot, as almost all chicks in kosovo. But im happy too, because we need this kind project in our country.

A skyline defining project is beginning construction in Prishtina, the capital city of Kosovo which recently became independent making it the youngest country in Europe.

The once war torn country is currently enjoying a flurry of activity in the architecture stakes, this project will see some new life breathed into the capital.

Standing at 165 metres, the project named The ENK Complex after its investors the ENK Investment Group, comes from the grey matter of architects, Anarch, and is being developed by Konstruktor.

Coming with a price tag of 400 million euros the complex has a somewhat unusual look about it. It's dominated by a single tower but rising from the shared podium are other adjacent blocks of different heights giving it a stepped look. Concrete ridges and balconies picked out on the glass facades also enhance this look.

Set on a wide podium base the complex will offer over 285,000 square metres of floor space which will accommodate high end office spaces, apartments, hotels and of course what no project should ever be without shoe shops... well retail space in general.

On the varying parts of roof which are quite numerous for one project, sky gardens feature heavily giving leafy relief for stressed out workers or those weary from to much shoe shopping. These roofs and the almost heaped profile of the buildings, particularly when viewed from certain angles, give it the impression of a massive glass termite mound teaming with humans.

The glazed facades will aid in climate control as well as giving views of the surrounding countryside though how long it will remain countryside is debateable with offers of investment flooding in from all over the world.

The complex is hoped to be open for business in the next five to six years and will no doubt have all the things expected of a multi use spaces such as gyms, spas and pools, giving the people of Kosovo some much needed R+R space as well as a prestigious address for those that can afford it.

Phase one is due to be completed in 2011 with phase 2 coming in three years later in 2014.

Architect 4M Group reveals ENK Hotel green designs

Architect 4M Group revealed its green designs for the ENK Hotel in Kosovo last week as part of a three-day programme of debates on sustainability called Green Sky Studios.

Twenty-five London architecture practices took part. The ENK Hotel is being developed by ENK Invest Group and is oriented to minimise solar gain. It also features a shading system.

Mixed use scheme in Kosovo maps and mitigates solar gain throughout the year

Computer-generated architecture might conjure up images of Gehry and Zaha-type schemes of dubious sustainability credentials.

But digital technology has helped the façade of this mixed use scheme in Prishtina, Kosovo, to combat solar gain while maintaining aesthetic integrity.

Southwark-based 4M Group’s design implements a ‘self shading mechanism’ whereby south facing panels are extruded to cast shadows or, north facing, pushed outwards to let the light in.

In designing the façade, the computer programme analysed the angle that the sun would hit the building during the spring and autumn equinoxes.

Director, Përparim Rama, said that balancing the aesthetic and practical aspects of the building frontage was important. “The façade studies take as an underlying assumption that [they] are interfaces between building interiors and their environment. As such, they have to negotiate internal with external conditions while establishing a desired identity.”

To create the pattern, the programme took into account the overshadowing from neighbouring masses and each 1,100mm square panel received a composite value - direct light and overshadowing. This was mitigated by the function of the specific floor the panel sits on. Each function also included the amount of privacy required in each case.The panels are being constructed from various materials including textured glass and wooden slats.

ENK Invest, Kosovo are funding the project. The hotel received planning in April and is currently under construction.

Avala, isnt even a skyscraper.... Its just a tv tower...

Anyway, from some angles, the tallest part of the ENK Complex looks like a single tower, but actually its a twin tower, connected through 9 continuous glass-covered skybridges.. Therefore making it the tallest twin tower complex in the Balkans ;)

Once you secure credits from major banks and sign agreements with them, you don't need to keep asking for credit. In Poland it might be different, seeing as everything is much better there, including asking for the same credit 250,000 times ;)

There were some problems with water leakages, but they were overcome. The developers also had some difficulties with city hall, but they were straightened out. Much of the time was spent digging; they've only been constructing the building for around 6 months now, and I see a lot of progress every month, actually.

I don't know Prishtina, is this complex in the centre of the city? Are there good public transport connections? This place surely will be a new centre all by itself.

You could say it is in the centre, being a small city. Public transport is very good, pretty much situated around here.

Because the construction was stopped some time ago due to the harsh winter conditions.

It is investment issues. Yes true there was a stoppage to the construction during this winter, which in honesty it put everything on halt, but as you say this project has been taking forever, and the only reason can be money.

We are talking about the overall speed of the project dude, stop getting so defensive. A small winter break doesn't mean a project should take 10 or more years to complete(the way it is going). The project was foreseen to be completed this year, however even 50% of the ground floors haven't been constructed.

- Digging for 6 underground floors
- Building 6 underground parking-garage floors.
- Building the 4 floor mall (which is also the base of the complex), and the 7 floor office building attached to it.
- Building the residential building (over 20 floors)


Phase 2:
- Building the over 20 floor hotel.
- Building the 42 floor office tower.

Phase 1:
- Digging for 6 underground floors
- Building 6 underground parking-garage floors. (50% complete)


This is where they are after 4 years.

That's a lot more to built in just 7 months!

Such a massive project, very nice though. Are the current build floors meant to be above ground or underground?

This project is like a new way for Prishtina. I hope in future in this city will be more good projects like this.
