This will definitely cut down the distance between OMR & airport. Does all the flyover ramps connected to the road on all sides? When completed....Pallavaram and Chrompet will have simiilar one on top of GST !! Thanks guys. The flyover ramps are almost touching the ground on all sides. A few of the ramps are fully completed. But the ramps towards the Chromepet side of GST road are still hanging a few feet above the ground. but it is a matter of a day's work to bring them down to the ground. Once the elevated Circle over GST road is completed, I guess they'll start with road laying works. vijayvmail August 26th, 2010, 07:46 AM Source: Dinakaran Tamil Newspaper, dated 26-Aug-2010 (http://www.dinakaran.com/chennaidetail.aspx?id=13839&id1=9) A combination of two flyovers and a subway are being planned at the intersections near Anna nagar Arch and Ampa Mall. The total cost is expected to be around Rs. 120 Crore and the construction is expected to be completed in 2 years. The design is being finalized and tenders will be floated soon. vijayvmail August 26th, 2010, 07:50 AM ^^ This news was already published in Times of India at the start of this year. Back then, the cost was quoted to be Rs. 80 Crore. Now we're reading the news again with the cost as Rs. 120 Crore. but nothing actually seems to have moved on ground. MyNation September 1st, 2010, 11:20 AM The Chennai Corporation Council on Tuesday extended the deadline for completion of two flyovers, including the upcoming facility in Rangarajapuram, and two subway projects being implemented by the civic body in association with the Southern Railway. The new deadline for completion of the Rangarajapuram flyover will be January 31, 2011. According to Corporation officials, the delay in completion of the work was mainly on account of protests by residents of the locality, difficulties faced in taking over a part of a temple land, time taken to entrust the work front to the contractor and rain. The railway's component of the work is expected to be completed by October. The council has accepted the request by the contractor for extension of deadline for the flyover on Cocraine Basin Road-Kathivakkam High Road to June 30, 2011. The project has been delayed on account of litigation, according to a resolution tabled in the council. The deadline for completing the subway at a level crossing (LC-2) in Villivakkam is January 31, 2011. The extension follows a request from the contractor for two more months after completion of the railways portion of the work. This work has also been delayed because of litigation. Over 30 per cent of the work has been completed. The new deadline for completion of the subway on Monegar Choultry Road is March 31, 2011. Around 60 per cent of the work has been completed, the resolution said. Let see how thy do this ... In P.H road , Metro is UG/ Overhead ???Will not this road subway obstruct even if Metro is UG??? Very confusing and complex project:nuts: This is my first post in this forum. Have been following this for while. The plan is not Good in my opinion. Its a simple POINT SOLUTION. My reasons 1. Downstream to flyover in Nelson Manickam Road is not free flowing today. So the flyover is simply going to backlog through flyover to Annanagar. 2. The Ampa Mall entry is from NM Road. Obviously flyover cant end before the entrance. So Anna Nagar to Ampa Mall has to take circuitious route. Not that this is the main traffic, but still a substantial one. 3. The flyover needs to be convuluted or Squared one - neither an easy one to construct nor easy to drive through. Other points. 1. 7m is width of each carriageway, 2 lanes on each side. Looking at the plan, its not 1 but 2 independent flyovers. 2. The other simple alternative is to construct a flyover on the PH over the entire area - with a subway from Anna Arch to PH right as indicated in this. Arunsankarrules September 1st, 2010, 06:24 PM The vijay nagar junction in velachery lacks a flyover. It is one of the most important junction in South Chennai. During peak hours vehicles are jam packed close to a km and one takes a long time to cross that junction. Some flyovers one in chromepet mit junction are of only little use. Only few vehicles are using that. But here in velachery, life for commuters is miserable. So, This junction badly needs a flyover. ChennaiLeader September 1st, 2010, 07:26 PM ^^ They have already proposed flyovers in this junction. More @ Times of India, Chennai Edition, dated 18th April, 2010 (http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/city/chennai/Velachery-junction-to-get-2-flyovers/articleshow/5827051.cms) Arunsankarrules September 1st, 2010, 07:46 PM I dont think so. Lot of works needs to be done before starting this project. 1) Velachery VJnagar - IT Corridor six laning project underway expected to be completed in a year. 2) Canal works in progress on the VJnagar - Tambaram highway. 3) VJnagar bus terminus needs to be relocated. 4) Velachery main road needs to be widened. So only after finishing all these works, one can actually even think of constructing a flyover. Do you think that works will start in the near future? God only knows!!! The six lane road narrows into 2 lanes here - ridiculous. Then move the bus terminus to the MRTS station, and widen the roads to their full width: that, in itself will make a difference. We can look at flyovers later. Just building flyovers over existing chaos will make no difference, except in the pockets of the local politicians. ramki_v September 13th, 2010, 09:54 AM Let them 1st clear the thatched shops and the Tasmac/tea kadai at the junction of the bypass road with the Velachery terminus. The facility, being constructed at a cost of Rs.3.68 crore by Chennai Corporation, will link Mehta Nagar Officer's Colony First Street and Venkatachalapathy Street near Harrington Road. B. Damodaran, a resident of Mehta Nagar, said that apart from the residents of Mehta Nagar, the bridge would be beneficial to those travelling from Nungambakkam to Chetpet, Sterling Road and Kilpauk. Traffic on Nelson Manickam Road would also be reduced as the bridge would serve as a short-cut route. Officials of the Corporation said the bridge would be 150 metres long and 8.5 metres wide and have pedestrian footpaths. A part of the construction cost is being met from the Member of Parliament Local Area Development Fund. The civic body is also carrying out widening works of bridges and culverts in various parts of the city. Work to widen the bridge in Aspiran Garden, which connects traffic between Kilpauk Garden Road and New Avadi Road, has begun. As the road is being used by more motorists, the bridge across Otteri Nullah canal is being widening from the existing 7.5 m to 11.5 m facility. The Rs.55.34 lakh project would be completed in six months, officials said. Similarly, a culvert on Cochrane Basin Road is being widened at a cost of Rs.33.93 lakh and the work would be completed in four months. The level of the culvert at the junction of Kalasathamman Koil Street and Chinnandi Madam, Kodungaiyur is being raised at a cost of Rs.20.24 lakh. Work to renovate the damaged subway near Communicable Diseases Hospital, Tondiarpet, is set to be completed by this month-end, the officials added. Nirmal S. September 22nd, 2010, 05:39 AM Flyover links IT corridor to airport Courtesy : The Times Of India Chennai: Soon, reaching the airport from the IT Corridor will become quicker with the flyover in Pallavaram ready for use.The Road Over Bridge (ROB),expected to be inaugurated by deputy chief minister M K Stalin in the first week of October, was approved by the government in October 2000. Despite being approved by the state government in 2000,the actual work began only in March 2004 at an original estimate of Rs 19 crore.Land acquisition was another reason for the delay. However, due to litigation and cost escalations, the project remained halfdone in 2007 when it was supposed to be completed. It was then given to a new contractor with a revised estimate of Rs 44.50 crore.By the time work resumed in October 2008,1.62 hectares of required land was acquired at Rs 20 crore. On Tuesday, highways department workers were giving final touches, including laying bitumen on the service lanes and painting the rotary-shaped structure.More than 98% of the work has been completed. The project cost is equally shared by the state highways and the Southern Railway, said Southern Railway officials. The flyover connects the Pallavaram-Thoraipakkam Radial Road with GST Road. Those travelling to and from the IT Corridor will do so on a four-lane stretch while for those travelling from Guindy to Tambaram, the flyover is a two-lane stretch. This is to enable more vehicles from the OMR and ECR to reach GST Road faster. The aim is to give software company personnel on OMR better connectivity to the airport and to decongest the routes used by them now, Pallavaram municipality chairman E Karunanidhi told TOI.With 42 street lights,a high-mast lamp and a rainwater harvesting system, the 2,200metre long flyover is 15 metres wide enough for two MTC buses and includes a median.Channels on both sides will discharge excess rainwater into a collection pit below.Bitumen-topped service lanes three metres wide and enough for a car to pass through are being laid on both sides. The bridge, which will connect busy stretches like GST Road,Velachery Main Road,Medavakkam Main Road,OMR and ECR,is sure to bring cheers to thousands in Thoraipakkam,Nanmangalam,Kovilambakkam,Pallavaram,Madipakkam,Thiruneermalai and Pammal. The bridge is a boon for thousands of residents who can now travel without any traffic chaos, said S Meenakshi of Pallavaram. The Rs 44.50-crore flyover, similar to those at Chromepet and Padi,is part of Southern Railways gauge conversion project between Tambaram and Chennai Beach. think_different September 25th, 2010, 07:05 AM http://img.dinamalar.com/data/uploads/WR_617538.jpeg arun82 September 25th, 2010, 01:56 PM Chennai South flyover update 1) Vandalur ROB- Construction over Railway track and GST in progress 2) Tambaram ROB- Construction over GST in progress 3) Chrompet ROB - final work like painting, lighting in progress 4) Pallavaram RUB (Vels College road) - Digging in the west side commenced 5) Pallavaram ROB - No changes 6) Rangarajapuram ROB - Constrution over railway tracks and connection to both sides in progress ceeznic pirate September 25th, 2010, 07:26 PM Chennai South flyover update 2) Tambaram ROB- Construction over GST in progress Are u sure? Appreciate your initiative. I am concerned about Chennai investing in building bridges that are nothing but elevated round abouts. It has proven to be a big mess all over the world, especially if the traffic exceeds a particular volume (which will be true in Chennai on Day 1). In NJ, USA there used to be 80 round abouts and now they are spending millions of dollars eliminating it. There are less than 10 now. Hopefully, these bridges don't become bottlenecks like the ones in NJ later on. bonoslack7 October 3rd, 2010, 06:08 PM ^^ whats the alternative? ModernIndia October 3rd, 2010, 06:47 PM for round abouts? I hope you are not kidding...:) Just any other interchange. could be clover leaf, trumpet, diamond or anything else including a combo of the above. The investment will certainly be costlier compared to the round abouts. But if the traffic is more than what the round about can handle, then the entire money invested in the round about will go waste (besides the money required for replacing it with a different interchange later). That is why I am hoping that the planners did enough research and forward planning while deciding to implement a roundabout. prathapdba October 4th, 2010, 07:33 AM good pixs Murali Bala October 7th, 2010, 04:49 PM Any news on the Pallavaram ROB opening. There is no way to climb on the bridge and check, as all approaches are blocked. madhan October 9th, 2010, 07:37 PM ^^ The approach road and the service roads on the radial road side are complete.. they have even painted the interior wall at the end of the ramp in the radial road side with Yellow / black arrow to notify the slight curve at the end.. i saw that the wire connections to all the lamp post has been provided.. not sure on what else is pending apart from some VVIP's date.. Murali Bala October 10th, 2010, 05:53 AM Nice to know atleast the work is completed. It should be a matter of days or week. It is a irony in democracy people are left to poiliticians & VVIPs wrath. I remember the Maduvangarai ROB bridge in Guindy was made open to public after they did get opening dates from VVIP's for some months. Hope this also goes the same way so that public can utilize the benefits. Gansan October 10th, 2010, 06:26 PM I am not sure if it is just a matter of waiting for VIP dates. The subway, which was scheduled to be completed last month, will be opened by January-end. Officials of Chennai Corporation, which is implementing the project in association with Southern Railway, said the delay was mainly on account of the heavy rains between July and September. Visiting the project site on Monday, Mayor M. Subramanian said the civic body had completed 85 per cent of the work. Southern Railway has installed three of the five concrete boxes, each 4.5 metre high and 10.6 m long, below the tracks. The remaining work is expected to be completed by mid-January. The Rs.34.16-crore sub-way will be 447.50-metre long and 13 metre wide, which includes 2.5 m wide cycle tracks. The Corporation officials said work on the subway began in 2009 and the project faced many hurdles, including those related to acquisition of land and removal of encroachments. ... About 5,000 families in Bojaraja Nagar, Srinivasapuram and Mint Modern Colony off Korukkupet had been cut off from the rest of the city by three railway lines Beach-Washermenpet-Korukkupet, Central Station-Gummindipoondi- Delhi and Beach-Basin Bridge-Arakkonam. These lines are flooded with expresses and EMUs, besides goods trains. Says a senior corporation official: "Now that the GAD has been accepted, we will conduct an inspection next week with senior Chennai Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board officials to work to shift service lines in the alignment area. Then a detailed estimate for the project will be drawn for floating tenders." The subway is likely to be 350 m long and 5.5 m wide. "More than 99% of the work has been completed. The project cost has been equally shared by the state highways and Southern Railway," said an official of the Southern Railway. Considered to be one of the long-awaited but much-delayed projects in the southern suburbs, the Rs 44.5-crore flyover, which is similar to MIT Chromepet and Padi flyovers, is part of the 1999 plan of gauge conversion between Tambaram and Chennai Beach by the Southern Railway and the Railway Works Project of the state highways. Despite the nod by the state government in October 2000, the actual work began only in March 2004 at an original estimate of Rs 19 crore. The delay was due to the preparation of the blue print of the project and also in getting nod from various layers of administration in the railways and state highways. Land acqusisation was another reason for the delay. Due to litigations and cost esculations, the project could only be half-completed in 2007 - the year when the flyover should have been ready as per the agreement between state highways and the private contractor. The project was then given to a new contractor, East Coast Construction & Industries (p) Ltd, with a revised estimate of Rs 44.50 crore. By the time work resumed in October 2008, 1.62 hectare of required land was also acquired at a cost of Rs 20 crore. ... saro October 26th, 2010, 09:54 AM Hi Guys, All our prayers are getting answered as i am drafting this. Laying of medain lights all along Pallavaram- Thoraipakkam Radial road has been signed off and the work begined last saturday evening. The work went on whole night. They have digged hole for median lights starting from Pallavaram to the first four way junction (Kovilambakkam). As of today morning they had laid the lamps till Vels college and works are in full swing. Think they are going to complete the work before the flyover inaugeration. Regards, Saro they finished laying lamps all the way upto keelkattlai junction.. expecting them to finish upto CTS today.. Murali Bala October 28th, 2010, 06:06 AM How come they are all working like "Pugahendhi's" one day CM. So much is happening so fast after 10 years. Laying lights for 8kms so fast. It is almost near to completion and may open up in a couple of months. The Southern suburbs are in for a bonaza. Not sure what is the status on the Tambaram ROB. Can that be opened in the next 6 months. Election in May 2011 and the last date for opening any new facility is March 2011 for the current giovt. The only bottleneck in this route, in the absence of this ROB, was the Vaishnav college level crossing. People who were prepared to brave it were already using this route anyway. My guess is only about 30% of the intended users were taking alternate routes so far. The main problem is that if we wait for the traffic to increase to go ahead with widening of the road, all this space will be taken over by encroachers. as the traffic now increases, you can now start small shops and structures coming up. If left unchecked, soon they'll start building permanent structures and the concept of the original 200 ft road will be long forgotten. Then around 10 yrs later when the traffic becomes too high, the government will wake up and spend another 10 years in trying to get these lands back. Its better to lay the complete road now itself when the place is available. Murali Bala October 29th, 2010, 05:58 AM How do you think Politicians & big shots earn money? They have cornered every bit of adjoining land to this road and will wait for huge compensation. This is what is happening on the Velachery junction. We still wait for 20 minutes dailiy on the Velachery junction just because 20 thatched shed shops refuse to leave because of Political support. Gansan October 29th, 2010, 06:08 AM The main problem is that if we wait for the traffic to increase to go ahead with widening of the road, all this space will be taken over by encroachers. It has already happened. There is a SEZ coming up adjacent to Vel's university, right on the road. Then there is an ecological angle involved in the form of the Pallikkaranai marsh. They mean traffic diversions, high security and loudspeakers. But deputy chief minister MK Stalin’s visit to Pallavaram to inaugurate a new flyover was doubly welcomed by residents of several suburban neighbourhoods. While the new 55-crore rotary-shaped flyover cuts down the distance between the IT Corridor and airport by 8km, Stalin’s visit ensured that the Pallavaram-Thoraipakkam Radial Road got street lamps. For the last ten years, different departments have been passing the buck, leaving the 200-ft radial road in the dark at night. The road that connects the suburbs with the IT Corridor also helps people move between GST Road and Velachery Main Road, Medavakkam Main Road and East Coast Road. State highway officials argued that their job was restricted to laying the road while the rest had to be done by local bodies. The local bodies of Pallavaram, Nanmangalam, Kovilambakkam and Okkiyam-Thoraipakkam located along the stretch failed to take up the work due to paucity of funds. All that changed last week after labour minister TM Anbarasan, who represents Alandur-Pallavaram in the assembly, made a pilot visit to the Pallavaram flyover and told officials that the radial road should be lit up for Stalin’s visit. Within no time, street lights were installed between Pallavaram and Kilkattai, a distance of 8km. “The lights were installed by the city roads division of the state highways. Each street light cost 75,000,” said an official. Residents hope, and officials promise, that street lamps would be installed along the rest of the road soon. The new flyover is 2,200 metres long, 15 metres wide. Motorists are already using one arm of the facility from Arumbakkam to Anna Nagar and one of the service roads. Officials of the National Highways Authority of India, the implementing agency, said that nearly 90 per cent of the work has been completed on the main carriageway and the remaining three loops. The deadline for completion, which was September, got extended owing to problems in acquiring land from a private establishment on Arumbakkam. A portion of retaining wall of the ramp leading to Arumbakkam from the main carriageway remains incomplete as a private establishment is yet to provide land. “We are planning to allow traffic on the main carriageway between Arumbakkam and Maduravoyal. Until the entire retaining wall is completed, the two-lane traffic from Maduravoyal side may have to move along only one lane when approaching Arumbakkam due to safety reasons,” an official said. While each of the two carriageways would be 11 metres wide where the traffic from the loops merges, the width would be reduced to 7.5 metre each as the traffic approaches the entry and exit ramps. Loops have been provided to link traffic between Vadapalani and Arumbakkam; Maduravoyal to Vadapalani; and Anna Nagar to Maduravoyal. Of the two ramps for service roads, the one connecting traffic from Anna Nagar to Arumbakkam was opened almost two months ago. Work has been completed on the service road from Maduravoyal to Anna Nagar. Motorists have started using the loop from Arumbakkam to Anna Nagar. Residents of Koyambedu said as the main carriageway is yet to be open, motorists from Arumbakkam take a left turn from the loop to travel to Maduravoyal. This poses problems for other motorists if traffic signal is green for those proceeding to Anna Nagar from Vadapalani. Work on the Rs.100 crore-facility began in 2007. The junction witnesses traffic of nearly one lakh passenger units during rush hour daily, an official said. http://www.thehindu.com/multimedia/dynamic/00279/02THKOYAMBEDU_JUNCT_279641f.jpg Source: The Hindu, dated 02-Nov-2010 (http://www.thehindu.com/news/cities/Chennai/article863598.ece) saro November 2nd, 2010, 07:15 AM New flyover proves a blessing Pallavaram Radial Road Gets Street Lamps Before Stalin Visit Chennai: VIP visits are not something residents usually look forward to. I am pretty sure if incorporated in the initial project, there would have been a ton of money saved. Instead of huge flyovers .. subtler alternatives could have been explored. Local governments should be empowered and have more say in the local matters. Quick actions should be initiated against such perpetrators by local governments. The problem in India seems to be that all the powers are vested with the State and Central governments and everybody else is a passive observer of the goings-on with disinterest. Sometimes, it is not just the poor who is doing it but a lot of rich and the powerful also do it or behind it. I had seen a rich land-lord cum MLA occupy public (poramboke) lands and convert them as his private property. I am sure this is not an exception. Every day the powerful folks - read politicians and their co-horts - quarry sand unofficially and make money out of them. Nobody dares raise an objection. Indian people have always been sympathetic to the wrong-doings of the rich and the mighty. When a crime of a much smaller dimension is committed by a poor person, everybody stands up to pass judgment. satchitananda November 9th, 2010, 05:23 PM ^^ Agreed Arasu. This is the dilemma you must answer for raising that Q. If I commit a big crime and go scot free, does that give you a right to commit a petty crime and complain that you are caught. The issues you have raised are all serious from two perspectives - a) Politicians indifference in ripping off the people (good example sand quarrying side effects - very short sighted) b) People's indifference to repudiate and punish this political class. Compounding with this apathy is the socio economic situation of the poor. You may add additional dimensions of total lack of planning any project from a holistic perspective - if they were to build a bridge.. all they do is plan and build one useless bridge when they should be thinking of all the traffic patterns affected by the bridge (or its lack). The ultimate reason in my mind is the victim mentality of the masses. Arasu November 9th, 2010, 06:39 PM ^^ Of course, the intention was not to condone petty crimes or encroachment of public lands by the rich or poor. I was only highlighting the indifference of the Indian populace towards public/collective well-being. "As long as I am not affected personally, I don't care" attitude. If discussions in the highways department are anything to go by, the government is hesitant to go ahead with the project, which it fears may encourage more people to opt for private transport. This could affect passenger patronage for one of the Metro Rail corridors, a part of which is to run along the same stretch, under Mount Road. In February, Karunanidhi viewed the physical models of the elevated highways, after which the government gave green signal for the projects. Piling work was to begin in September and end by March 2011, so that it doesn't cause hindrance to Metro Rail works. However, amidst talks of shelving the project, there is no sign of the piling work starting. The probable shelving of the elevated highway project may also come as good news to many Mount Road lovers who feel the elevated structures would obstruct the view of several old buildings which add an integral charm to the city's oldest arterial road. It has good climate, (if climate is the one we sribb about for our loss), roads that are better than Bangalore & cost of living that is not high as Bng or Pnq...that is a place which has all possibilities to be developed as a metro city in all sense..but we failed to even consider these advantages and market it aggressively. This would have given a stiff competition to both the cities..and TN would have been No 1 state in IT & manufacturing...TN politicians are dumb(p)heads...We have beautiful cities all around TN but we don't beautify them or recognise them....pity on us. The state highways department has issued work orders for the construction of a 600m long flyover along IRR, connecting two signals at Anna Nagar II Avenue-IRR and Mogappair Road-IRR junctions. A pedestrian subway at Mogappair Road-IRR intersection will also be built as part of the project which is to be executed at a total cost of Rs 60.33 crore. It will be a four-lane flyover and is scheduled to be completed in 18 months from the date of commencement of the work," said sources in the department. The government recently approved the detailed project report for the two facilities that would be closely located on the stretch. Officials of the Highways Department said one of the flyovers would begin from Periyar EVR Salai before the Anna Arch and land on Nelson Manickam Road, taking an L-shape. The other would begin on Periyar EVR Salai near Nelson Manickam Road and end on Anna Arch Road in front of the Arignar Anna Government Hospital of Indian Medicine. The facility would also include a loop that would land near the hospital's medicinal farm. Motorists proceeding towards Parry's Corner from Nelson Manickam Road would take the loop ending on Anna Arch Road and join the traffic on Periyar EVR Salai, the officials said. An official said tenders would soon be floated for the Rs.117-crore project. Of the total cost, Rs.40 crore has been set aside for land acquisition. A major share of the lands to be acquired is from government agencies. Anna Arch would be relocated 50 metre further down on the road to accommodate the flyover. bonoslack7 November 16th, 2010, 11:35 PM http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/city/chennai/Decks-cleared-for-flyover-in-Tambaram-illegal-structures-demolished/articleshow/6938422.cms The state highways department on Tuesday demolished over 50 illegal structures opposite the Madras Christian College in East Tambaram, paving the way for work on a Rs 78-crore flyover to re-start. A four-year-old leagal battle had ended after the Madras high court a few days ago quashed the petitions of 30 individuals who had encroached upon the land. With strong support from the Tambaram police, state highways department workers demolished more than 50 illegal structures, mostly commercial buildings and petty shops. According to officials of the state highways' city roads division, acquiring land is their biggest challenge and they have cleared around 15,000 sq m for this project. "Tuesday's demolition was significant as it helps us lay service lanes and open up a portion of the flyover for traffic movement. It's a big relief," they said. The flyover will replace the existing railway level crossing (LC No: 30) in Tambaram. "Acquiring land and evicting encroachers on the East Tambaram side was a major reason for the delay. With instructions from our divisional engineer, we completed the demolition. The debris would be cleared in the next few days," the officials added. The two-lane flyover project, which is being jointly executed by Southern Railway and the state highways department under Railway Project Works, will be 3.2 km long and 7.5 metres wide enough for two buses to pass. The fifth such facility that has come up on the 15-km Guindy-Tambaram stretch in the past few years, it is part of the state government's effort to give better connectivity to the city and its outlying areas. "The flyover will not only be a major link connecting East and West Tambaram but will also connect Velachery Main Road with GST Road, helping ease traffic congestion," said Tambaram municipality chairman E Mani. The delay in the construction has also escalated the cost. The original estimate, when the work first began, was Rs 35 crore. Now, it has been revised to Rs 78 crore the share of the state highways department which includes land acquisition costs. It was in 2004 more than five years after it was first envisaged by Southern Railway as part of the gauge conversion work between Chennai Beach and Chengalpet that the project began. Since then, however, it was delayed several times, mainly due to objections by the affected families whose land was to be acquired for the project and litigation against evictions. ChennaiIndian November 17th, 2010, 11:48 PM http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/city/chennai/Three-lane-Adyar-bridge-finally/articleshow/6944181.cms CHENNAI: Finally, an additional bridge in Adyar, along the existing Thiru Vi Ka bridge, is set to take shape with the foundation likely to be laid on Friday. Aimed at easing congestion near the city's southern gateway, the project is expected to be completed in ten months, highly-placed sources said. Administrative sanction for the project was given in 2005 after it was found that Thiru Vi Ka bridge, with a four-lane divided carriageway, was unable to handle the huge amount of traffic through the day. It is a major link to the city for people in Tiruvanmiyur, Adyar and Besant Nagar as well as for those from southern suburbs. The proposed three-lane structure, to come up between Thiru Vi Ka bridge and the old disused bridge, will be 326 m long and 11 m wide with a 1.5-m wide footpath on one side near the old arch bridge. It is estimated to cost Rs 13.08 crore. "The contractor will begin work immediately after the bhoomi pooja," said a senior government official. The road level of the proposed structure has been fixed at 0.72m over the existing bridge. The width will overlap the existing footpath on the four-lane bridge by 1.4m. At least 14 spans will run across the river from near the erstwhile Sathya Studios to Malar Hospitals. The highways department also plans to clear the flower/fruit market at the southern end with support from the corporation. ... ChennaiIndian November 17th, 2010, 11:57 PM http://www.deccanchronicle.com/chennai/korattur-subway-gets-civic-body-green-signal-532 Chennai, Nov. 15: Korattur residents who have put up with crowded railway level-crossings for several years can now heave a sigh of relief with the Ambattur municipality giving the go-ahead for the construction of a new subway there. But, on the other hand, the petition of Korattur’s neighbourhood locality, Ambattur, is yet to find any official support. When contacted, Ambattur municipal commissioner Ashish Kumar said. “The Ambattur level crossing at Karukku (LC6) is still in the planning stage. We will be giving the Korattur (LC4) subway a no-objection certificate soon, but no such project is being executed at Karukku.” “During peak hours, it takes nearly 30-45 minutes to cross the tracks. And the traffic jam develops into a 1-km-long jam. This is not a new problem. The authorities should have taken up a project to construct a subway here long ago,” says Mr Raja Babu, who commutes from Ambattur to Guindy every day. Not only commuters, but also Lok Sabha MP T.K.S. Elangovan had raised the demand for two subways in Ambattur and Korattur during the 2010 budget session of Parliament. ... sridhar_n November 19th, 2010, 11:07 AM Can anyone update on the Adyar / LB road junction flyover /underpass project pls? Inspecting various projects on Friday, Highways Minister Vellakoil Saminathan said that a decision on Anna Salai flyovers would be taken in a fortnight. The Highways Department is also weighing in the option of constructing smaller flyovers in the intersections instead of constricting two long elevated stretches of larger flyovers to reduce traffic congestion on the arterial road. The department was planning to complete the piling work of the flyovers before the commencement of the Metro Rail work. “We are not dropping the plan to decongest Anna Salai. There may be modifications based on the results of the study,”Mr. Saminathan told The Hindu. The Minister also inspected the Koyambedu Grade Separator. The grade separator would be put to use completely by December. The work on a three-lane bridge on the Cooum River in Aminjikarai would be completed in two months, he added. The Government Order on commencing work on two flyovers and a subway on Periyar EVR Salai-Nelson Manickam Road-Anna Nagar Third Avenue junctions had been issued. The initial funding for commencement of the Rs.117-crore project would be done through contingency fund until legislative approval. The L-shaped subway would begin on Anna Nagar Third Avenue and take a right turn to end at Periyar EVR Salai for vehicles proceeding towards Koyambedu. Vehicles from Koyambedu would also use the subway for reaching Anna Nagar Third Avenue. ...
