The latest is the state highways department, which is likely to begin projects worth 167 crore — construction of grade separators at Moolakkadai, Ennore Creek and Tirumangalam — in December. While work orders have been issued for the Tirumangalam and Ennore Creek projects, negotiations are on with the least-quoted contractor for the one in Moolakkadai. “Highways officials approached the traffic police a few days ago, requesting that barricades be put up at the Tirumangalam junction. Once that is done, test piling work will be launched,” said a senior government official. The grade separator at Tirumangalam junction is expected to help vehicles easily cross over from Anna Nagar Second Avenue to the Mogappair Road junction and Jawaharlal Nehru Salai. The 737-metre-long structure envisages a four-lane divided carriageway with a median and two-lane carriageways on either side of the grade separator. The intersection tops the list of locations in the city with heavy vehicular density, with container vehicles vying for space with twowheelers and cyclists. The project is estimated to cost, according to officials, 60.33 crore. A pedestrian subway has also been planned as part of the grade separator. The bridge across Ennore Creek, to link the Ennore Expressway with the North Chennai Thermal Power Station (NCTPS) Road, is estimated at 56.22 crore. In the abscence of such a link, vehicles have to go through the Chennai-Ennore Road, Manali Oil Refinery Road and Tiruvottiyur-Ponneri-Panchetti Road to reach NCTPS a distance of 15 km long. The need for a grade separator at the Moolakkadai junction has been a long-pending demand for Madhavaram, Manali and Red Hills residents. “The department made at least two tender calls before zeroing on a contractor in the third. If the negotiations are succesful, work will begin soon. The estimated cost is 50 crore,” said an official source. It envisages a four-lane divided carriageway flyover that will be 613m long at the Moolakkadai junction — the northern gateway to the city. It will include a 7.5 m-wide service road with 2m-wide footpathcum-drains on either side. A pedestrian subway will also form part of the project. With the plan now in limbo, people who travel regularly through the congested junction will have to put up with the chaotic traffic that the area has become notorious for. According to official sources, though the design, structure and the estimated cost for the project were ready a year ago, the flyover proposal is likely to remain pickled for some time. According to corporation sources, the civic body proposed to spend over `125 crore to construct a lattice-bridge structure to ease congestion near Tiruvanmiyur junction. About `90 crore was to have been spent exclusively for acquisition of about 50 grounds that had been identified. The corporation had approached the city collectorate to obtain the land but the acquisition is yet to begin, sources said. Hit by financial crunch due to implementation of the revised sixth pay commission recommendations, the corporation now feels that the project will empty its coffers and affect routine maintenance work, the sources said. When contacted, corporation commissioner D. Karthikeyan said the corporation has instructed its field officers not to shelve the project but continue the paper work, albeit at a slow pace. The engineers are advised to ascertain the possibility of constructing the much-awaited `100 crore bridge in a phased manner. “The design for the project is ready. A consultant has also submitted the draft plan and the project will be completed in due course of time,” the commissioner said. ... mr_madras November 22nd, 2010, 07:32 AM http://www.deccanchronicle.com/chennai/3-level-flyover-limbo-061 ... Instead delaying it further they can construct 2 lane flyover for 1way traffic for Thiruvanmiyur to Tidel park/adyar(T shape) like adyar jn flyover and declare 1 way for the road towards SRP tools will reduce waiting time at signal drastically and free flow for vehicles from ECR towards city. Any suggestions cofee November 22nd, 2010, 08:48 AM Guys any one have any idea as to how they will connect/Link: 1. Anna Nagar 2nd Ave to Mogaperu while Thriumangalam is a T Junction? 2. Nelson Mannickam to Anna Arch while NM road is a T junction at Ampa Mall I hope they knock down the ugly slum like transport quarters, water tank and JJ complex at Thirumangalam junction. They are really an eye sore. JJ complex is poorly maintained and has depleted over the years. The Tirumangalam depleted slum like transport quarters should be knocked down and a Metro railway station built there. The transport employees also deserve a new decent quarters in the suburbs. Any news about the large 30 acre Siddha herbal Farm at Anna Arch. That spot is hardly used by the Gov Siddha mob who is on the other side of the arch with collage & hostel on a huge 80 acre plot. I heard news about a year ago that The Siddha mob was asking Stalin for a 50 acre herbal farm site near Thambram where they have Siddha, Unnai Hospital and that kind of Jazz. I think MK Stalin should give them a 50 acre near Thambaram and take this 30 acre Anna Arch site for some public infrastructure. ferrari_fan November 23rd, 2010, 04:11 AM Guys any one have any idea as to how they will connect/Link: 1. Hi I agree its nearly 1 KM creek but if the plan is to connect the two ports the Ennore express reoad or Kathivakkam High road is not that wide to accomdate trailer traffic. I can understand that the fllyover takes atleast 2 yrs to complete, in the mean time I expect either Ennore Express Road(Beach) or kathivakkam High road to be extended to 6 Lanes. State highways minister Vellakoil M. P. Saminathan who laid foundation stone for constructing a bridge across Ennore Creek on December 2, would take part in the ground breaking ceremony for the construction of a new three-lane bridge adjacent to Thiru-Vi-Ka Bridge on Kamarajar Salai across Adyar river next week. According to highway officials, the work order has been issued for the `40 crore Tirumangalam grade separators project. “The pilling test would begin very shortly,” the official said. The highways department has also floated tender for awarding contract to the `29 crore Mo-olakadai grade separator. Tender would be floated for constructing the Anna arch and the Nelson Manickam Road-EVR Periyar Salai junction grade separator project at a cost of `117 crore very soon. “Works on both the Moolakadai and Anna arch and Nelson Manickam Road grade separators will be started before the elections,” the official said. The work on the Porur grade separator has began even though land acquisition is yet to be completed. The department has invited tenders for preparing DPR to build the elevated highway to run on top of the EVR Periyar Salai from the Raja Muthiah Road junction to the Pulla Avenue Road junction at Aminjikarai. mr_madras December 6th, 2010, 07:20 AM http://www.deccanchronicle.com/chennai/state-rushes-begin-road-work-903 . This is the time to start the project work. it seems no work on Anna salai flyovers & OMR before election. ezhilan81 December 7th, 2010, 04:43 PM CHENNAI: The Perambur flyover — inaugurated in March this year — has come as a big relief for thousands of motorists in north Chennai since the onset of the north-east monsoon in October. Till last year, traffic policemen at the Ambedkar College Road near Pulianthope had a tough time regulating the vehicular traffic from Purasaiwalkam to the north-western parts like Moolakadai and Madhavaram, due to severe waterlogging at the Ganeshapuram subway near the Vyasarpadi Jiva railway station — a key entry/exit way for vehicles plying between Madhavaram and Purasawalkam. When the construction of the Perambur flyover was on, motorists were forced to use either the Vyasarpadi subway (from Basin Bridge) or the ICF overbridge via Ayanavaram to reach north-west Chennai, as vehicles were restricted from entering the waterlogged Ganeshapuram subway. But, the inauguration of the Perambur flyover changed all that. Motorists and passengers of MTC buses now find travel along this stretch hassle-free with the ease in traffic congestion. The flyover has come as a boon to motorists from localities like Kolathur, Sembium, Peravallur, Periyar Nagar, Jawahar Nagar, Moolakadai, Jamalia, Ayanavaram and Erukanchery. Buses bound for KKD Nagar, Kodungaiyur and Vyasarpadi from Parry’s Corner were diverted via the new bridge. Source: http://expressbuzz.com/cities/chennai/perambur-flyover-relief-to-rain-hit-motorists/229097.html satchitananda December 8th, 2010, 08:54 PM http://www.hindu.com/2010/12/09/stories/2010120950960100.htm Work on a flyover on Anna Salai near the new Secretariat complex will start within a few days if the government accepts the recommendation of a revised traffic study for the facility. :ohno: Consequently, Metro Rail work on the stretch may be delayed by a few months for completion of the piling work of the flyover. The study, conducted by the Highways Department over the last few weeks, emphasised the need for expediting the flyover project as it would be one of the crucial components for effective traffic management on the arterial road. Most of the eight traffic intersections of the stretch from the P.Orr & Sons showroom to the CIT Nagar First Main Road junction near Saidapet covered in the study had recorded traffic volume of over 10,000 passenger car units (PCU). Some of the intersections have a growth of over 10 per cent in traffic volume that it is expected to soon touch 10,000 PCU, said an official of the Highways Department. Higher order solutions, such as construction of bridges and flyovers, are usually recommended for traffic volume of over 10,000 PCUs. The study report assumes significance as there has been delay in commencement of the flyover work. The pile foundation work for the four-lane flyovers was planned to be completed by March 2011 before the commencement of the Metro Rail work. The work on the two flyovers proposed on Anna Salai was expected to start in August and the CMDA had sanctioned Rs.100 crore for the project. One of the flyovers would span a length of 1.9 km, between the P.Orr & Sons showroom and the Spencer Plaza junction. The other flyover on Anna Salai would be 2.9 km in length and stretch between Anna Arivalayam in Teynampet and the CIT Nagar First Main Road junction near Saidapet. wlbkng December 9th, 2010, 03:09 AM http://epaper.dinakaran.com/pdf/2010/12/09/20101209a_003101006.jpg The foundation for new high level flyover near existing adyar Thiru.Vi.Ka flyover to be constructed at a cost of 13 crores was done yesterday in front of Highways minister and Chennai Mayor bonoslack7 December 9th, 2010, 04:45 AM http://www.thehindu.com/todays-paper/tp-national/tp-tamilnadu/article940726.ece The work to construct a three-lane bridge parallel to the Thiru Vi Ka Bridge across the Adyar river commenced on Wednesday. Inaugurating the work, Highways Minister Vellakoil Saminathan said that the State government was making efforts to ease traffic congestion in the city by constructing bridges and flyovers. 333 metres long The Rs.13-crore bridge across the Adyar river would be 333 metres long and 11 metres wide and is being constructed in the space between Thiru Vi Ka Bridge and a dilapidated bridge. One side of the new bridge would have pathway for pedestrians. On completion, it is likely to ease traffic congestion on the stretch connecting Adyar and Santhome, which is now choked with vehicles during rush hour. The Thiru Vi Ka bridge was constructed in 1973. The Chennai Corporation will make efforts to acquire land, including from Dr. MGR-Janaki College and Andhra Mahila Sabha, for widening Durgabai Deshmukh Road, Mayor M.Subramanian said. This would be crucial in easing the congestion on the stretch, he added. More bridges Highways Secretary G Santhanam said that the government would shortly give sanction for construction of bridges in more locations that have been identified. Work on the bridge in Moolakadai-Perambur junction would commence in January at an estimated cost of Rs.49.55 crore. Putting all speculations to rest about the plan to build two new flyovers on Anna Salai, state highways minister Vellakoil M P Saminathan on Wednesday announced that his department would soon take up the work at an estimated cost of Rs 339 crore. The government had given its nod to the project in March this year. Laying the foundation stone for the construction of an additional bridge near Thiru-vi-ka bridge in Adyar, Saminathan said his department would complete the piling work before March 2011, the deadline given by the Chennai Metro Rail Limited so as to allow the latter to begin the construction of tunnels on the arterial road. "The chief minister has already directed us to take up the work," he said. The two four-lane grade-separators will help ease traffic on the road where traffic has grown manifold in the recent past. The first grade separator will run for 1.8 km, beginning at the new secretariat complex and connecting Blackers Road junction, Dams Road-General Patters Road junction and Binny Road-Pattulos Road junction near Spencer Plaza. The second flyover will begin at Anna Arivalayam and connect Eldams Road-Thyagaraya Road intersection, Cenotaph Road junction, Venkata Narayana Road-Chamiers Road intersection and CIT Colony First Main Road junction. This grade separator would be 2.9 km long. A comprehensive traffic and transportation study by the CMDA had strongly recommended this project in 2008. Certain quarters within the government had raised doubts over the implementation of the project, citing the ambience of the site. However, after the Highways Research Station surveyed the site and presented a grim future for the traffic scene on Anna Salai, the highways department decided to go ahead with the project. The detailed project report is now in its final stages. "If the project is not taken up by highways department immediately, it will never materialise, because once Metro Rail digs its tunnel, there is every chance of piling work disturbing the tunnel," sources in the CMDA said. A committee-led by the director, Town and Country Planning, has already allocated Rs 100 crore from the infrastructure and amenities fund for this project The highways department is now all set to hold discussions with the Chennai Metro Rail Limited over the delay in the project. "As per the original plan, the piling work should have begun in September, but with the lapse of three months, the highways department will hold discussions with Metro Rail to sort out the matter. Our initial phase covers only pile foundations and this will not take much time," said a senior government official. The department does not want to take any chances as the model code of conduct for the Assembly elections will come into effect in the first quarter of the year. Meanwhile, Saminathan said the construction of a four-lane flyover at Thirumangalam junction over Jawaharlal Nehru Salai will begin in ten days, and will cost Rs 47 crore. darkprinz December 10th, 2010, 03:57 PM ^^ Atleast build something futuristic both in terms of usability and aesthetics ... no dabba pillars :bash: And what happened to porur flyover ... The proposal, estimated to cost Rs 294 crore, has been sent to the railway board for inclusion in the railway works programme for 2011-2012. These include a flyover between Thiruninravur and Veppampattu railway stations; a limited-use subway between Korukkupet and Washermanpet railway stations on Korukkupet-Bhojaraja Nagar main road (at a cost of Rs 17.78 crore); a flyover between Korukkupet and Vyasarpadi railway stations (Rs 29.26 crore); flyover between Korukkupet and Vysarpadi railway station (Rs 22.43 crore); a flyover between Nandiyambakkam and Minjur railway stations (Rs 25 crore); a flyover between Perungalathur and Vandalur railway stations; a flyover between Chengelpet and Ottivakkam railway stations on the Chengelpet old GST road and Thirukalivakkam Road (Rs 25 crore); a flyover between Padalam and Karunguzhi railway stations in Kinar-Keelavalam Road (Rs 25 crore); and a flyover near Kancheepuram railway station. Majority of the flyover and subway works were suggested based on the train vehicle units (TVU) calculated by the railways, said state highways minister Vellai Koil Swaminathan, who attended a railway-highway department meeting to review the ongoing projects. TVU a ratio of the number of vehicles that pass through the road as against the number of train traffic - is used to identify level crossings where a subway or a flyover is needed. If the TVU is over a lakh at a level crossing, a flyover or a subway can be constructed. Of the 10 new projects suggested, only three the flyovers between Chengelpet and Ottivakkam railway station, Padalam and Karunguzhi railway stations and Pakkam and Acharapakkam railway stations -- fall short of the require one lakh TVU. However, these projects were included because the level crossings are very close to the stations. "Priority will be given to take up works at level crossings were train vehicle units meet the required standard. The rest will be taken up subsequently," said Southern Railway chief administrative officer R Ramanathan. The proposal for new projects, which were approved by the state government, were mooted for the first time at a meeting that was held between railways and the PWD a couple of months ago and were discussed in detail at a review held on Thursday. "The railway board will study the proposals and will include them in the railway budget. We can take up preliminary works after the projects are sanctioned by the ministry," said Ramanathan. He also said currently railways was working to complete all sanctioned projects by 2013 so that new projects could be taken up. While poor traffic was cited for dropping the proposed flyover/subway project at LC 87 in Tiruchi, proposals for similar projects at neighbouring level crossings were the reason for deciding to scrap a project at Tindivanam. The 600m long flyover will come up at a cost of Rs 33 crore along GNT Road (NH 5). According to official sources, the highways department has issued work orders to city-based construction firm Consolidated Construction Consortium Limited, and the work is scheduled to be completed in 18 months from the date of commencement. The project should have begun early this year but the department could not find a contractor to do the job and had to call for the tenders thrice. The project gains significance as the GNT Road-Madhavaram High Road junction is one of the highly congested zones in north Chennai. Residents of places like Vyasarpadi, Madhavaram, Perambur, Kolathur and Red Hills regularly use these roads and the junction often witnesses traffic jams, even during non-peak hours. Highways officials said traffic density on both Madhavaram High Road and GNT Road was on the rise, warranting a flyover there. "The total cost of the project is Rs 50 crore, of which Rs 33 crore will be spent for construction. The remaining amount is the cost of land acquisition,'' said an official. Many residents in the area said a flyover at GNT Road-Madhavaram High Road intersection was a long-pending demand and urged the authorities to ensure that the project was completed as per schedule. "With the movement of all type of vehicles including lorries, trucks and buses and slow-moving vehicles, this intersection has become highly accident-prone these days. Roadside parking of vehicles and encroachments also cause hindrance to the traffic flow. It is very difficult for elderly people and children to cross the road here. The situation was worse during recent rains,'' said Vijayakumar, a resident of Madhavaram. "The junction is not free even during night hours as movement of trucks towards Chennai Port is heavy on GNT Road. Once the flyover is constructed, heavy vehicles should not be allowed to take the road beneath it in the interest of smaller vehicles and pedestrians,'' said Thiyagarajan, a resident of north Chennai. The highway officials admitted to the 3 month delay in the project and attributed the reason to shortage of sand. Work has now reached momentum and is quoted to be finished by September 2011. If the government is serious about the project, which was announced by finance minister K Anbazhagan nine months ago, then the piling work must begin immediately before Metro Rail digs a tunnel through Anna Salai. Once the tunnel is dug, it may not be safe to carry out the piling work. But officials in the highways department said the state government was still indecisive on the project and that is why no administrative sanction has been given yet. "The government recently wanted a re-feasibility study on the traffic conditions on Anna Salai. That was done and the report was submitted. But the government still seems to be in a dilemma whether to go ahead with the project or not. We hope a clear picture would emerge by the end of this month,'' sources in the department said. Officials said there was also a suggestion doing the rounds that one long elevated highway could be built on Anna Salai at a level above Gemini flyover, instead of constructing two elevated highways. When the project was announced on March 20, the highways department had planned to begin the piling work for the elevated structures in September last year. But the government later began to reconsider the matter, as elevated highways could encourage more people to opt for private transport which in turn could affect the patronage for the soon-to-come Metro Rail and also affect the ambience of Anna Salai. Subsequently, highways minister Vellakoil Saminathan announced at a public function last month that the project was set to take off. But when contacted on Sunday, Saminathan said he had merely repeated what the finance minister had announced in the Assembly. "Initially, we had proposed to build five flyovers on Anna Salai and later we decided to construct two long elevated highways on the road. Our engineers and consultants will soon give a power-point presentation to the chief secretary, after which the matter will be taken to the deputy chief minister and thereafter to the chief minister,'' Saminathan told The Times of India. As per the highways department's plan, one elevated highway will be 1.8 km long, beginning at the new secretariat complex and connecting Blackers Road junction, Dams Road-General Patters Road junction and Binny Road-Pattulos Road junction near Spencer Plaza. The other will be 2.9km long which will begin at Anna Arivalayam and connect Eldams Road-Thyagaraya Road intersection, Cenotaph Road junction, Venkata Narayana Road-Chamiers Road intersection and CIT Colony First Main Road junction. Officials said there was also a suggestion doing the rounds that one long elevated highway could be built on Anna Salai at a level above Gemini flyover, instead of constructing two elevated highways. Somehow this just sounds like a really stupid plan. Flyover above an existing flyover in the same direction ! And Metro is also going to run below. The Gemini flyover plan given by city connect, with a new flyover from Nungambakkam high road to Cathedral road above the existing flyover, made more sense in eliminating any signal. Ithu ennavo, pogatha ooruku vazhi thedara maathiri irukku (looks like searching for directions for a city no one's going to go - literal translation). With so much wavering on this, Metro work is also going to be delayed. :bash: ezhilan81 January 4th, 2011, 07:12 AM ^^ The main purpose of these flyovers seem like an easy movement for politicians to the LA by avoiding the common man's peak hour traffic rather than any significant public use. In additon to elevated road, they need to acquire a lot of property to make it unformly six lane wide. ezhilan81 January 4th, 2011, 12:39 PM flyovers were must for the city like chennai. and they are for easy movement for people, doesn't matter if politicians use that. widening roads will not help as the traffic flow from and into all directions. every intersection in the city is creating huge traffic pileup during peak hrs. 6 lanes won't help at intersections. check how koyembedu bridge helps now, i am tavelling daily thru. it saves me around 10-15 mins every time i pass thru. I am not against building Flyovers, am just saying get the basics done right first. You need good wide roads to build big flyovers. A Koyambedu or a Maduravoyal or a Kathipara grade seprator was possible because the roads are equally wide enough. I dont want a flyover on an iconic road like Anna Salai to end up like a Kodambakkam or a Kotturpuram flyover. We cant keep building flyovers at every intersection just because there is traffic. The model is same as the one used for the Napier bridge and the one at Velachery. After two years of stalemate, Southern Railway recently commenced its portion of work that had been delayed due to shortage of manpower. “At any given time, only two projects can be taken up with the existing manpower. The Tambaram Sanatorium and Pallavaram flyovers have been opened and the one at Tambaram is nearing completion so we began work on this one,” Southern Railway sources told The Times Of India. The state highways completed its part, including construction of ramps on either side of the rail line and laying bitumen service lanes, in March 2008. According to railway officials, in this model, the road overbridge on the rail line alone is 48 metres long (3 times more than the conventional one) and has a curve. Besides, two large spans will strengthen the ROB and hold it from the top. “Our share of the project cost is 2.4 crore while the rest of the total of 14 crore will be borne by the state highways department. We expect to complete our work by June,” said Southern Railway sources. The project, part of the railways’ gauge conversion plan between Chennai Beach and Tambaram, began in 2003 but was stopped after a few months due to difficulty in acquiring defence land. It resumed in 2007 and the sta highways’ portion was completed in March 2008. The two-lane bridge will be 650 metres long and 7.5 metres wide—enough space for two MTC buses to use the bridge at any given time. With neatly-laid ramps, the bridge will be illuminated by 240 lights and reflectors on both sides. Channels on both sides of the bridge will discharge excess rainwater into a collection pit beneath the structure. For the benefit of the commuters to reach the Pallavaram railway station, a staircase has been provided by the state highways. I really wish they scrap these flyover projects and come up with more long term solutions like clearing the encroachments and widening the roads. They first need to maintain a uniform road width throughout Anna Salai and PH Road. The facility, being constructed with the Member of Parliament Local Area Development Scheme (MPLADS) funds of Dayanidhi Maran and the Railways, is expected to ease traffic congestion in North Chennai. Inspecting the Rs.9.5-crore project on Tuesday, he said that the project was the first overbridge in the country to be undertaken with funds from MPLADS. He underscored the need for coordination between the Chennai Corporation and Southern Railway coordinate to complete projects ahead of the deadline. The need for the facility was one of the long-pending demands of the residents of Perambur. The proposal to construct an additional bridge alongside the existing facility was made in 2004, at the cost of Rs. 4.5 crore. However, because of delay, the cost had escalated to Rs. 9.5 crore. The existing bridge, which was 4.3 m wide, was over 50 years old and was not enough considering the increase in the number of vehicles. The work was delayed on account of various reasons, including the need for shifting of utility lines, land acquisition, speed restriction of trains and diversion of traffic. The overbridge would be 6.3 metres wide and 508 metres long. It would have seven spans and go over nine railway lines. It would also have a 1.8m-wide pedestrian footpath and two ramps. Composite steel girders and RCC slabs have been used for the facility. Mayor M.Subramanian and Deputy Commissioner (works) of Chennai Corporation Darez Ahamed were present. That place is a horrible mess as far as traffic is concerned. madrasi7777 January 12th, 2011, 11:23 AM I sincerely believe that wide roads are the best solution. The flyovers in india only brings soreness to the eyes, but what are our choices? My flat is in front of the Koyambedu junction and I know that the jam has increased but the overall scenario is better. In this situation a flyover in Koyambedu will be better. I can suggest another way out. All the buses and trucks must take the poonamallee high road via the whole sale market and then to maduravoil flyover and take the outer ring road. Places like Tambaram must have a mini bus stand so that people do not have to come all the way to Koyambedu to take a bus. When an attempt is made to make a flyover in Koymabedu signal what must be considered is that the pile up is again shifted to the next signal like what mukund says. All major signals on 100 feet road must have a flyover and minor junction must be closed and the vehicles must take a U turn further down rather than a right turn or cross. STUP Consultants Limited has been appointed to conduct a detailed study and come up with a report on traffic pattern, project design and cost estimates. The flyover will cater to the huge vehicular population coming in from the suburbs. The Vijaya Nagar intersection is at the confluence of Velachery Bypass, Taramani Link Road, Velachery Main Road and the Velachery-Tambaram High Road. With growth in real estate in the recent years, traffic has become chaotic. The MTC bus terminus at the junction adds to the congestion. Pedestrian movement has been badly hit due to more people using private transport. According to official sources, the grade separator is estimated to cost Rs50 crore. "Due to the convergence of many arterial roads at this intersection, there is a plan to have level one and level two grade separator to cater to all sides. Furthermore, the department cannot afford to spend a huge sum on acquiring private land because of skyrocketing real estate prices. That is why a multi-level flyover is being planned," said a senior government official on condition of anonymity. On receiving a proposal from the metro wing of the highways, the government gave administrative sanction to identify a consultant for this project last November. The department will avail funds from the Tamil Nadu Road Infrastructure Development Corporation for the project report. There is need for a large-scale project following the rapid developments off Velachery -- residential colonies have sprung up in Pallikarnai, Okkiyam Thoraipakkam, Medavakkam and Madambakkam. Also motorists travelling to the IT corridor, prefer to use this route to reach the Pallavaram-Thoraipakkam Radial Road. There is also tremendous pressure from locals, who have demanded better traffic management to ease the congestion. "Traffic is horrible during peak hours and motorists have to wait for a long time to cross the junction. The city police introduced traffic signals at this intersection last year. Unless the MTC terminus is moved closer to the Velachery Railway terminus, the problem will remain," said P Vaidyanathan, a resident of Vijaya Nagar. What began as a mini bus stand in 2001, is today a full-fledged terminus that operates 600 services to areas like Mamallapuram, Ambattur, Pattabiram, Vellavedu near Poonamallee, Acharavakkam, Villivakkam, Perambur and Tiruvottiyur. The residents are also unhappy with the slow progress of the widening of Taramani Link Road, which will ease traffic congestion when completed. vijayvmail January 22nd, 2011, 04:50 AM http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/city/chennai/Velachery-traffic-to-get-a-breather/articleshow/7337357.cms The frenzied traffic movement at Vijaya Nagar intersection in Velachery may soon be a thing of the past with the state highways department planning to build a multi-level flyover at the busy junction. There is no mention of widening the existing roads and relocating the bus stop. We shouldn't just focus on constructing something - the solution should be to actually reduce the congestion, not relocate it. The terminus would be moved to the station, but if the existing structure is retained, there is no point. Buses will still use the road below the flyover to stop at the terminus. Also, they are addressing the intersection of the bypass road end, but there is no mention of the Taramani link road junction. The multi-level flyover mentioned here may not work in practice to due space constraints - see the narrow flyovers in the impression. I think it would be easier to have a 3 level road (subway, surface and flyover). Having lived here for a while, I can anecdotally identify these directions of flow being the biggest: 1. Station - Link Road (through subway 3-4 lanes, cut and cover to reduce cost) 2. Bypass - Station (flyover - easy due to angle of turn) 3. Station - Bypass (widen intersection and free left turn, remove those meat shops and use the storm water canal's roof as a lane, strengthen if necessary) 4. Link Road - Bypass - signal 5. Link Road - Station (widen road, remove parking and have through no-signal lanes) Remove the terminus completely, and use the space to unify this into a single intersection with one signal. The load on this signal would be lesser since some of the traffic flows have been addressed above. Move bus stops into each road, so there is no single point of congestion in the middle. Also, the solution should include reducing traffic flow to this intersection. A good chunk of the traffic can be eliminated by adding a bypass to this area. SR is constructing a road along the track - add good connection to it near the station and near the other end, near Taramani. That would divert some traffic off #1 and #5 above. Explore widening the road along the Velachery lake connecting the MRTS extension road to the Bypass road. Make Velachery Road one-way from Guru Nanak College to Vijaya Nagar and prohibit right turn into it from the Link Road. Build FOBs and real platforms for pedestrian access, prohibit parking, and redesign the Vijaya Nagar Main Road's intersection near Adyar Bakery so people don't slow traffic while turning into it. Better yet, make it one way with no exit. Lastly, add proper bus bays one each road, so the congestion is not divided and exported into each road :). The advantage here is that 3 out of the 4 roads are already wide ones, so make the most of it... bonoslack7 January 23rd, 2011, 08:59 PM ^^ +1! I wonder where they get their ideas from. The four-lane flyover, which is to be built at a cost of Rs50 crore along GNT Road, is scheduled to be completed in 18 months. The project, which was supposed to have began a year ago, could not take off since the highways department had to call for tenders thrice to get a contractor to do the work at the cost fixed by authorities. The work order has now been issued to a city-based construction firm Consolidated Construction Consortium Limited. "A flyover here has been a long-pending demand. During evening hours, it can take up to even half-an-hour to cross the junction. The new facility, once completed, will be a big relief for motorists and residents of north Chennai, mainly Madhavaram, Moolakadai, Perambur, Kolathur and Vyasarpadi,'' said K Sivaraman, a motorist living in Perambur. "They made a stretch of Madhavaram-Red Hills High Road near Moolakadai junction one way, but that hardly serves the purpose. As everyone is irritated due to the congestion, you can see a lot of quarrels between vehicle users,'' said V Mahalakshmi, a resident of Madhavaram. Apart from reducing traffic congestion, the proposed flyover is also expected to speed up cargo movement to and from Chennai Port through GNT Road. It was only last Wednesday that Union shipping minister GK Vasan inaugurated the Rs267-crore Chennai Ennore port road connectivity project to widen the Manali Oil Refinery Road, Tiruvottiyur-Ponneri-Panchetti Road, Ennore Expressway and northern stretch of Inner Ring Road into four-lane roads, which had originally been planned eight years ago. Traffic congestion in most parts of north Chennai went out of control last month when truckers staged a strike by parking their vehicles on roadside, protesting against the poor road maintenance. While the Chennai-Ennore road connectivity project is scheduled to be completed in two years, highways officials said they would ensure that GNT Road flyover was completed within one-and-a-half year, as scheduled. "Of the total cost of Rs50 crore, construction cost of the flyover would take Rs33 crore and the remaining amount is to be spent on land acquisition and shifting of utilities,'' a senior highways official said. kannan infratech January 24th, 2011, 05:08 PM It doesn't look like a well thought out plan. They should study the traffic flow and density first before deciding on the type - flyover / underpass / combination. Unless the road width is increased, it will be chaos. bonoslack7 January 25th, 2011, 03:19 AM http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/city/chennai/Foundation-for-GNT-Road-flyover-to-be-laid-on-Jan/articleshow/7354817.cms State finance minister K Anbazhagan will lay the foundation stone for construction of a much-awaited flyover on Grand Northern Trunk Road (NH 5) at Moolakadai junction on January 26. The four-lane flyover, which is to be built at a cost of Rs 50 crore along GNT Road, is scheduled to be completed in 18 months. The project, which was supposed to have began a year ago, could not take off since the highways department had to call for tenders thrice to get a contractor to do the work at the cost fixed by the authorities. "They made a stretch of Madhavaram-Redhills High Road near Moolakadai junction one way, but that hardly serves the purpose. Instead of creating fly overs at every intersection it will be better if CMDA builds circular express ways like say from kathipara-tirumangalam-central-kathipara with appropriate exits to important places along the way. This could even run on another tier like it is planned in Vadapalani . Instead of doing the 2 -tier just at Vadapalani alone , we need to make the two tier complete from kathipara -tirumangalam-central-kathipara with metro on one tier and traffic on the other. They opened it for just a few hours and the road closed after that. It took just 10 mins to reach Puzhal. The elevaed road work is completed and also the ROB at Pattaravakkam is also completed. But still the road is closed for traffic and due to this there is a heavy rush in the service lanes below the elevated road. Any idea on when the road will be opened? A good news!!! The Chennai Bypass II from Maduravoyil to Puzhal is opened for vehicular traffic from last Sunday. As a result, there is absolutely no traffic snarls inside Ambattur industrial estate 3rd main road (service lane of elevated highway). Murali Bala February 8th, 2011, 08:36 AM I noticed this flyover near Urapakkam station a couple of months back. I asked the workers there and they told me that this is a flyover to replace the level crossing there. The road beyond the flyover is going to be widened a bit. This road goes for around 5 kms and joins the mudichur road (I think) - the one that comes from current ongoing Vandalur bridge and ultimately goes to Oragadam. So, the Urapakkam Flyover will be an alternate link between GST road and these areas. The pillars are not vertical to my eye. Am I seeing it wrong or is it a new slanted design. This can be alternate route, but if you go once then you will never take it. What is stopping them from completing the part on east tbm side? all the lands were acquired right? vijayvmail February 16th, 2011, 04:49 PM http://img821.imageshack.us/img821/6382/dsc00194tr.jpg There seems too be two segments here. Form the photo it looks as though they have to separately construct pillars right next to the last two. Is that so? In that case, have they even laid the superstructure before nearby pillars are done? Murali Bala February 17th, 2011, 05:19 AM nope, u r wrong... all the pillar works have been finished long bak.. even the ramp on east tbm side was almost finished long bak... the closing part of the ramp was only missing.. no pillars needed for that... they will finish that how they did for airport flyover... it shud not take much time... only thing which will take time is they need to fill the slabs b/w two pillars in east tbm side which may take time. otherwise we can expect this flyover to open within 2 months if the work goes on fast paced ------------------------------------------------------- Enna thalaivarae, you said pillars are complete. Pillarayium kanoum deck slab ium kanom. This wll take a clean 3 to 4 months. Mudicha Saeri. Nowadays it has become a habit of opening flyovers in sections. As long as people are benefited everything is okay. seku February 17th, 2011, 06:59 AM ^^ Opening in section at times will turn into a tragedy. Given the state of our navigation signs and our ppl's driving attitude. (Remember the pallavaram ROB action scene, car diving into tracks ) nowadays opening any infra project doesn't depends on the project completion, rather its on thalaivar's availability. If calendar is open, then they will make sure something will be opened, no matter how it's :bash: gnams February 17th, 2011, 08:30 AM ------------------------------------------------------- Enna thalaivarae, you said pillars are complete. A tiny amount of thinking is enough to avoid the rectangular turns and make it more curvy. The proposal as above will be a nightmare for the traffic and there is no need to make it as rectangular, especially as the space on top of the roads are already available. krishnaswamy February 21st, 2011, 11:02 PM so there will be a signal for anna nagar people to turn right into koyambedu? kongutamizhan February 21st, 2011, 11:15 PM I hope the planners will use their brain before they actually build the bridge proposed above. TShyam February 22nd, 2011, 07:02 AM so there will be a signal for anna nagar people to turn right into koyambedu? No they will take the flyover and take a 270 degree turn infront of ampa mall towards koyambedu. The picture illustrates it clearly. @Chennaileader: Thala, subway is for traffic taking right from NM road. He is asking about the other side. Arul Murugan February 22nd, 2011, 07:08 AM ^^ CI, was correct in answering Krishnaswamy querry. - Anna Nagar traffic from arch towards Koyamedu shoud take the subway. - Anna Nagar traffic from arch to Central will take the free left. - Anna Nagar traffic from arch to NM road will take the "L" shaped elevated road.
