One arm of the Yshaped Rangarajapuram flyover will be opened for traffic on August 20, mayor M Subramanian told TOI on Saturday. The other arm of the Rs 24-croreflyover, a joint venture of the civic agency and Southern Railway, will take a few more months to be completed.
There have been repeated appeals from residents to open the completed arm, since the vehicular movement in the neighbouring four-decade-old Kodambakkam bridge andDoraiswamy subway in West Mambalam was getting increasingly chaotic. The completed arm of the flyover will facilitate the flow of traffic from Bazullah Road junction to Aziz Nagar in Kodambakkam. “This will benefit hundreds of motorists,” said Subramanian.
The civic administration has approached the state governmentfor theopening of the flyover. The ‘Y’ shaped flyover is 962m long and replaces a level-crossing that connected T Nagar with Kodambakkam. The flyover has a unique feature of having the longest spans over the tracks not supported by pillars—47.7m on one side and 49.5m on the other. It uses bowstring arches of 11.5m to distribute the weight. The two arms will facilitate two-lane traffic and residents wantthefacility attheearliest.
Itis not yetclear whowould inaugurate the flyover – the mayor or a minister – but residents are not so keen on that politics. “Let them decide on an official function later, but wewantittobeopen for traffic. This is a lifeline for us,” said Anand Laxman, a resident of Padmanabha Street, T Nagar. After motorists started using the flyover recently, the local body had put up barricades near the entry and exit points.
Initially, the project suffered setbacks due to delay in shifting of water lines and storm water drains. Land acquisition too hampered the progress of the project.
Rangarajapuram flyover is one of the several traffic projects initiated by the DMK-led ruled council in the last five years.

I tend to believe because of IAF in East tambaram is restricting the high rise building... Thats what people talk there. It may be untrue.
TBM high rise is inside Shanmugam road. Tillai wines and Phillips Hospital. Of course they are just 4-5 storeys. they are the tallest to my knowledge... Tillai wine building, never got completely opened. It was a theater in 4th floor and above (!). Never got license to operate (or some other issue. plenty of rumor on this). 2nd and 3rd is SBI bank. Ground floor is Tillai winesused to be there, now TASMAC. Never know if any such building exist elsewhere. Philips Hoispital, always remains as mystery building. Never seen a patient around there. So both high rise remain a dark and booth building in TBM.
For better view of this bridge, you need to climb the shopping complexes on Mudichur road. They are just 2 storeyed. But I assume it gives better view. Else MR theater shopping complex also may provide good view, little far though.
wlbkng August 14th, 2011, 08:10 PM ^^ Hindu mission hospital too could give better views but not impressive views.. Btw, Thillai building n Philip hospital - they are still mystery buildings as yu said.. One of the stories is that Vidya theatre is the main reason for Thillai theatre to not to open. This is just one of rumors.. Not sure whats the actual reason
mr_madras August 15th, 2011, 04:52 AM perambur & Loco bridges are very good for drive and areas around are maintained well.
koyambedu flyover sucks mainly due to non development of areas below flyover and no painting at all.

There are couple of hillocks around MEPZ, which obstructs east side view from CTS.
We can get a good view of western parts. Chennai byepass, Thiruneermalai, west chrompet, St. thomas mt, DLF(looks huge) and airport(to some extent)...

I heard from a autowala that they are going to make a pavement for pedestrians. Not sure if thats true and I dont believe if that could be reason for not opening the flyover.
nambi83 August 16th, 2011, 11:45 AM Red tape slows down flyover, chokes traffic in Tambaram
D Madhavan, TNN Aug 10, 2011, 05.50am IST
CHENNAI: Commuters in East Tambaram will have to put up with traffic congestion for some more time as the government is yet to approve the opening of part of a new flyover on Velachery Main Road.
The Rs 78.8crore flyover, or road overbridge, would replace the railway level crossing (LC 30) in Tambaram.
On February 28, sections of the flyover on GST Road and Mudichur Main Road were opened by former highways minister Vellakoil Saminathan. The rest was still under construction. "After completing work on the rest of the flyover in East Tambaram about a fortnight ago, we requested the government for permission to open it to traffic. We are still awaiting their approval ," said a state highways department official.
The delay has also hit the laying of service lanes and storm water drains beneath the flyover. As it has not been opened, motorists use space beneath the flyover to travel between East and West Tambaram. This is holding up the rest of the work.
"The subway near the flyover is narrow and flooded most of the year, and the wait at the level crossing is long. Opening the flyover would be a relief for us," said P Saravanan, a resident of East Tambaram.
Last November, the Madras high court quashed petitions filed by 30 encroachers , and state highways department demolished over 50 illegal structures, mostly commercial buildings , in East Tambaram. This put an end to a fouryear legal battle between encroachers and the department. "The court order helped us re-start work. We cleared around 15,000 sq m of land for the project," said a state highways official.
The two-lane flyover, which is being constructed by Southern Railway and the state highways under Railway Project Works, will be 3.2km long and 7.5m wide.
The flyover at Tambaram is the fifth such facility between Guindy and Tambaram , a distance of 15km, to come up in the past few years. The flyover is part of Southern Railway's gauge conversion scheme to reduce waiting time of trains.

Right from the old days, Pallavaram is known for its stone quarries. This one although not Pallavaram may be one of those stone quarries but looks abandoned.

Yes. That could be a possibility!
Right from the old days, Pallavaram is known for its stone quarries. This one although not Pallavaram may be one of those stone quarries but looks abandoned.
But quarries won't be such deep. It looks like an excavation with clear route for lorries to transport sand

satishanu August 16th, 2011, 09:17 PM Good that they are opening the flyover after completion instead of half-baked, 3/4 baked.
ChennaiIndian August 17th, 2011, 02:02 AM Friends, one quick question about the Sanatorium ROB - a few months ago, it was still in incomplete status although opened to traffic. How is it now? Have they closed the level-cross gates and sealed them on both ends?
satishanu August 17th, 2011, 02:33 AM The final portion of the flyover on Velachery Main Road will be opened on Wednesday by state highways & minor ports minister Edappadi K Palaniswami. The flyover would replace the railway level crossing (LC 30) in Tambaram.
On February 28, sections of the flyover on GST Road and Mudichur Main Road were opened by former highways minister Vellakoil Saminathan. The rest was under construction. "After completing work on the rest of the flyover about a fortnight ago, we requested the government for permission to open it to traffic and finally we got it," said a state highways department official.
The delay had hit the laying of service lanes and storm water drains beneath the flyover. The subway near the flyover is narrow and flooded most of the year, and the wait at the level crossing is long. "During rush hour, the level crossing witnesses traffic chaos due to presence of colleges, schools, bus stands and the residential colonies. Opening the flyover would be a relief," said Tambaram municipality chairman E Mani.
The two-lane flyover, which is being constructed by Southern Railway and the state highways under Railway Project Works, will be 3.2km long and 7.5m wide.

Arul Murugan August 17th, 2011, 03:08 AM ^^
wow!
what a good news...
CP, Muralibala... congrats
A quick history of this flyover
Proposed - 1995
Fund grant by a Japan company -1996
Dropped due to Pokhran test - 1998
Work begins - 2005
Half baked opening - 2011 feb
Full opening - 2011 Aug
38crores flyover proposed in 1995 cost escalated to 74crores in 2004.. The flyover is supposed to be built by NHAI, SH and SR together. 20crores is railway share and 54crores in NHAI and SH (I guess NHAI might have said good bye after Chennai bye-pass was opened for them!!.. so it should be SH fund)
ChennaiIndian August 17th, 2011, 05:32 AM ^^ They need Japanese funds to build a flyover?
BTW Arul, pls answer my question on the Sanatorium ROB. Thanks

Not only me. Many were eager to get on the bridge. I found many taking pictures on the flyover. Before taking the flyover, the traffic police near the station entrance, directed everyone to take the flyover.
The bridge has wide 2 lanes on each side and the ride was smooth. Bye bye LC30...

As usual nice pic! One good thing with the new gvt, most of the inaugurations are thro video conference which certainly avoid the traffic jam due to convoy. Even in the above pic I could see color flags and not party flags. Hope this culture continues and also hope they don't make the public fool by opening half baked bridges and a big function for the same with all kurunila mannars.

Enna Kodumannaa.... For which reason they vacated the resident on either side of Velachery anyways a waste... Bridge took complete inward construction from the road (mostly on the railway land, except near MCC where they require a portion of anchroachment to be cleared).
My house was close to where you see the "Thiruma" writing in the wall (more closer to the gate...)...
This gate claimed more people... many arrest of public (crossing when closed is an offense)...A pond on the west end of railway gate is completely submerged in the debris...
Now we require a pedestrian crossing for this gate... So that this LC is completely closed... (However I like the mechanism involved in this... Long rods, pulleys, huge hydrallic, the bell sound.... I cannot forget them) I wish they place it in some museum... The first suburban Vicker's Engine is in TBM shed... Even this gate (complete set) also should be palced.
By the way is there any place in India where 4 arm LC is placed? It was need of the hour for this LC due to huge traffic (even though Suburban traffic is multi fold only after TBM).
deepaksubramaniyan August 17th, 2011, 06:57 AM ^^
Boss sanitorium ROB is already functioning rite.... I mean the one starting from GST road petrol bunk and divides into 2 bridges. One directing towards Citlapaakkam and the other one East tambaram likely :puke:

Are you referring to the flyover which takes from Bharata Mata st and joins Chitlapakkam and meets GST near Siddha institute? Yes, all the wings of the flyover are opened. For some time connection to Chitlapakkam side was closed. They opened it abt some 5-6 months before. Not sure whether the LC gates are closed.
deepaksubramaniyan August 17th, 2011, 07:03 AM Yes level crossing has been closed..... Pedestrian subway which is in merciful condition :bash: shud b used....
nambi83 August 17th, 2011, 07:31 AM happy to see finally the bridge is opened. thanks ceenzic pirate for the pictures.

Yes, The level crossing has been closed.

TShyam August 17th, 2011, 11:40 AM That was a crucial bottleneck. Glad that it is now opened. Btw is it really 3.2 km?? I have been through this road a few times but it never looked like 3.2 km! Maybe 2 km (including all the arms).
madhan August 17th, 2011, 04:02 PM ^^ They would generally sum up length of each of the arms to calculate the total length of the bridge. Then it would definitely sum up to 3.2 KMs.
ezhilan81 August 17th, 2011, 05:44 PM The bridge is good but why do they give a sori pudicha effect on the walls? Cant they give a smooth finish which will give a more modern look? I dont understand if this chippy chippy look serves any purpose. Makes me feel am looking at a 80's design.
Anniyan August 17th, 2011, 05:56 PM The bridge is good but why do they give a sori pudicha effect on the walls? Cant they give a smooth finish which will give a more modern look? I dont understand if this chippy chippy look serves any purpose. Makes me feel am looking at a 80's design.
sori pudicha effect - eays to remove the posters
Arul Murugan August 18th, 2011, 05:28 AM Nnone of the media has covered the opening of the bridge with aerial views?
they will cover only if policos open it with grant stages, sweets etc.,!?
If anyone find the pics in today's news paper pls share it. Thanks in advance

Railway authority have closed the LC permenantly after flyover opening, not leaving channel even for pedestrian to cross. This leaves TBM station flyover is the only one bridge where people can cross. Or Die crossing the track... who cares...
Next. One of the biggest commercial market (whole sale centre for next 30km business), Tambaram Market has been completely closed behind the walls. Highway authority is constructing such that no vehicel can go in or get out. This include customer / pedestrian entry or out. Imagine the small scale shop owners, they cannot even take their goods out using their small TVS.
Who is the designer for this? You enable busses and lorries and not for the people... What for all the infrastructure??? People are facing hell lot of problem just crossing the line...

what you are suggesting is... Let people jump and cross just because they are capable of doing it? There should be a pedestrian subway, before closing existing path, have not seen pedestrian pathway in the bridge.
So only if crores and crores of people walking (like t nagar) you will consider people exist in ths region, not if they are in thousands? market was an existing infrastructure, if goods vehicle making traffic, then rhe solution should enable smooth traffic beside having a goods vehicle traffic. So if new roads comes the existing should be abandoned?
Anyways... If thats the general opinion i leave it there...

DPR for 22 projects to be drawn up on priority basis
Work on four grade separators to be taken up
Twentytwo projects in the Chennai Metropolitan Area have been identified for preparation of detailed project reports (DPR) on a priority basis, Highways and Minor Ports Minister Edappadi K.Palaniswamy said in the Assembly on Friday.
In a document that he tabled in the House on the performance of his department during 2010-11, he said preparation of DPRs was in progress for four grade separators in the metropolitan area. The four grade separators are planned at (a) the intersection of Velachery Bypass, Taramani Link Road and Velachery-Tambaram Road at Vijay Nagar, Velachery, (b) at the intersection of Kundrathur Road and Sandhai Road with GST Road at Pallavaram, (c) at the intersection of Perambur Red Hills Road with Inner Ring Road at Kolathur Irattai Eri junction and (d) an elevated bridge on EVR Salai connecting all road junctions between Raja Muthiah Salai junction to Pulla Avenue.
The works would be taken up for implementation after the detailed reports were finalised, the Minister said.
Mr. Palaniswami said that the government had accorded sanction for the construction of foot over-bridges at seven locations at a total cost of Rs.28 crore, for which DPRs were under preparation.
These locations are on GST Road near Chromepet Government Hospital, GST Road near MEPZ, Tambaram, Inner Ring Road near SBOA School road junction at Tirumangalam, EVR Salai near Vaishnav College, Velachery Bypass near Metrowater filling station, Taramani Link Road near TCS and Taramani Link Road near Perungudi junction.

jayaraj100 August 27th, 2011, 03:42 AM Today TOI have reported the problem faced by public enforced by TBM flyover. Look at the road across the LC, railway department is prompt to damage so that no one crosses the road. Of course that is the intention, does not mean you achieve it through this way... Attitude...!!!
Pedestrians still cross tracks at Tambaram
D Madhavan TNN
Chennai: The Tambaram flyover, over a railway level crossing, has finally been opened but thousands of commuters and pedestrians continue to cross the railway line. The structure has no staircases offering the pedestrians a safe passage to the railway station nor is there a pedestrian footpath connecting the station to the flyover.
On Wednesday, the former Tambaram MLA, SR Raja, inspected the flyover and the areas beneath it following petitions from commuters, pedestrians and welfare associations. Raja, who served two terms as chairman of Tambaram municipality, later said: “We will take up the issue with Sriperumbudur MP T R Baalu, who is also chairman of the advisory council for the Railway Board. Southern Railway’s role is crucial in resolving the issue,”
On the Guindy-Chengalpet suburban section, comprising 17 stations, the Chromepet-Tambaram stretch remains the deadliest with at least 15 accidents a month, railway sources said.
Many residents say they have not benefited much after the main portion of the flyover was opened a few days ago. While sections of the Rs 78-crore structure were opened on February 28, the final part, on Velachery Main Road, was thrown open on August 16. This portion connects East and West Tambaram.
“Though the level crossing has been closed, we don’t have a choice than to cross the rail line. The subway near the flyover is narrow and flooded most of the year. The road near the level crossing are still crowded during rush hour,” said P Saravanan of East Tambaram.
The original plan, state highways officials said, had no provision for staircases on either side. Before constructing such a facility, there should be a pedestrian footpath to connect the staircases in the flyover with the railway station, they said.
The Tambaram railway station doesn’t have such a facility. “As they (Railways) did not build the pedestrian footpath, staircases alone would serve no purpose. So, we did not include them in the plan,” a state highways department official told TOI.
Unlike in the past when a pedestrian footpath connecting staircases in the flyover was built, Southern Railway sources noted, nowadays pedestrian subways are built near flyovers. The flyover at Tambaram Sanatorium is an example, they said.
Many people, especially women and the elderly, prefer to use subways than climb a staircase — usually around nine metres in height and comprising around 40 steps on each side. “This is the reason why many staircases at flyovers near railway stations remain unused. The existing subway near the flyover at Tambaram will converted into a pedestrian subway as an alternative,” said a Southern Railway official.

NOT GOOD ENOUGH: The Tambaram flyover does not have staircases connecting it to the railway station. Nor is there a pedestrian footpath from the station to the flyover

I am afraid, all this flyover designed like big speed braker (similar to one before Airport). You will staill have need for signal under the bridge.
Trumpet design for the flyover towards the low traffic arm is the best. Because, you will have signal free and at the same time the flyover will be requried for low traffic so, it may be smaller in size compared to one "Airport" where the traffic on the flyover is for the main road and hence bigger flyover. More money. But only negative is, you need space... Will from ruling party to clear the space for construction would help providing permenant solution.

Seriously, do they need a model for this simple flyover?
I would be more happy if they had considered a grade separator (or something similar to the one designed for Anna arch), involving 2nd avenue and SH 112 as well.
PS: The lighting reminds me of the rotary flyovers at pallavaram and chrompet, where there put up too much lighting to show cause their "achievement". I hope they stick to normal lighting as displayed in the model.

While the trade center construction may have progressed fast over last two years, it is a very delayed project. Till 2009, i.e. 8 yrs after 9/11, it was dogged by various problems and cost escalations and even the foundation was not completed. The US media was blasting the project execution.
Only after 2009, the project seems to have picked up pace. This project is hardly a good example of a fast and well executed project.
Kathir September 1st, 2011, 10:12 AM ^^
I totally agree..But, look at the volume of work done in two years, leaving behind the delays and other issues before this period. What I tried to convey is not the delays in projects in India caused by various hurdles, I tried to portray the volume of work that can be achieved in a time frame.. For instance if we consider the work of Indian Railways, you can get my point. Salem-Karur line is one good example.
sshivakumar September 1st, 2011, 07:46 PM ^^ I would account most of the delays to the hurdles only (in all forms). A good example for the volume of work, if I remember correctly.. Tidel Park was constructed in 13 months within the budget and ahead of schedule.

Arul Murugan September 5th, 2011, 03:21 AM Set for greater makeover in a few years' time
Upgraded roads, grade separators, outer ring road, improved transport system, Monorail will play major role
http://www.thehindu.com/multimedia/dynamic/00773/04SEPTCHDHR_city2_M_773090e.jpg
Chennai city will change beyond recognition in a few years. Thirty arterial roads have been selected for upgradation, grade separators are coming up, the Outer Ring Road is under formation, public transport systems are set to improve and Monorail is coming. The city will have more road space, better public transport, be pedestrian-friendly and far less congested.
The State government has already set the ball rolling for decongesting the city and improving traffic junctions with the announcement of 22 projects in the Chennai Metropolitan Area. The detailed project reports for grade separators at four junctions and foot over-bridges at seven locations are under preparation on a priority basis. Sources in the Highways Department said the grade separators are expected to be completed in three years. Already, work is on to construct several flyovers and subways by the Chennai Corporation and the Highways Department.
Official sources, citing projections for the future, say the Chennai Metropolitan Area is expected to grow into a mega city with a population of more than 10 million in the next 10 years. And correspondingly, the vehicle population too would increase.
Presently, there are 33.75 lakh vehicles including 5.67 lakh cars, 25.81 lakh two-wheelers and 63,640 autorickshaws in the city. Keeping these factors in mind, projects including Phase II of Outer Ring Road and Rajiv Gandhi Salai have been announced to help decongest the city.
“The ORR will become the future growth corridor of the city. Around 95 per cent of the land acquisition has been completed for Phase II connecting Nemilichery with Minjur. The formation of the road will lead to more residential areas coming alongside and ultimately decongest the city. We have already set aside land for commercial development along the corridor. The idea is to take the development up to the north. We will have 180 degree of development, with the existing city being the hub, the link roads being spokes and the ORR the outer ring,” a top official in the Highways department said.
Rajiv Gandhi Salai, East Coast Road, Grand Southern Trunk Road, Grand Northern Trunk Road, Bangalore Road are the link roads. Steps are also being taken to form new link roads including those from Sadayankuppam Road to Ennore Expressway and Tambaram Sanatorium to Outer Ring Road. These facilities are expected to encourage people to move out of the city.
While stating that in the past, there has been no major effort to develop roads linking the city's radial arterials, S.P. Sekar, professor, Department of Planning, Anna University, says judicious planning of the Monorail network must be carried out to plug gaps in the road grid. “Future radial roads have to be identified and connected to ease the vehicular load on arterial roads,” he adds.
Officials say they are implementing projects based on the Chennai Metropolitan Development Authority's Second Master Plan and the time-frames set in it. V. Santhanam, a resident of Chromepet said, “Though projects are being drawn up and announced with great fanfare, they take a very long time for completion. While work is on for laying major roads like Oragadam Road, nobody bothers about the interior roads in the suburbs. Earlier, we had layouts and they used to have smaller roads. Now with gated communities coming up, such interior roads are not being laid… they are being ignored.”
Sources in the CMDA say, “The proposed expansion of the city would help in improving small roads in the suburbs, which help in relieving pressure off the major roads. So far, the focus has been on improving traffic on major roads. Adequate attention has not been paid to roads in municipal and panchayat areas as they do not have the funding or the expertise. The Chennai Corporation is already preparing a report on how to strengthen infrastructure in areas that would be merged with the city,” the sources say.
Residents, who welcome the government's move to form new roads, construct grade separators and install foot over-bridges, say grade separators at Koyambedu and Padi and flyovers at Perambur and G.N.Chetty Road have helped eased traffic in their areas.
T. Gunaseelan of Ambattur, who works in Velachery says the grade separators at Koyambedu, Padi and Kathipara had helped him cut travel time to office. “Earlier, I used to avoid going by bus as a lot of time used to be taken up just for waiting on the road. It used to take 30 minutes to travel from Guindy railway station to Kathipara and another 40 minutes from Thirumangalam to Koyambedu. Now with the flyovers, travel by two-wheeler has become more comfortable. However, lighting and signages need to be improved,” he says

Arul Murugan September 6th, 2011, 08:26 AM Three bridges in north Chennai to be widened
Three bridges in and around north Chennai are to be widened as part of the measures to ensure smooth flow of traffic, reduce travel time and enhance road safety.
The first project involves widening of a bridge at Tiruvottiyur by the Highways Department to improve connectivity between Tiruvottiyur and Manali, an industrial hub.
Widening of the facility, located near Chennai Petroleum Corporation Limited (CPCL) refinery, was a long-pending demand of the residents of Manali and Tiruvottiyur, said M. K. Elamvazhuthi, secretary, Manali-Sekkadu Environment and Consumer Protection Welfare Association. Accidents and traffic congestion are common as the bridge constructed in 1950s is narrow, he added.
“Motorists have to vie for space with heavy vehicles bound for Manali and MTC buses on the bridge. The other alternative for the residents of Manali is to take a detour of eight km via Ennore Expressway to reach Tiruvottiyur,” he said.
The Highways Department is set to float a tender within a month to widen the two-lane bridge in to a four-lane facility.
The project is to be taken up under Chennai Metropolitan Development Scheme. Officials said the existing facility is 800 metre long and 6 metre wide. The width would be increased to 15 metre, including provision of 1.2 m wide median.
The traffic volume on the bridge has increased manifold over the past few years. The facility witnesses a volume of 8,000 passenger car units daily, much more than the 2,200 PCUs estimated in 2002. The project, to be implemented at a cost of Rs.2.70 crore, would be completed in 18 months.
Two more bridges across the North Buckingham Canal would be repaired and widened following a proposal from Water Resources Department. Officials of the WRD said the canal is being widened from 15 m to 40 m in various stretches between Ennore and near Central railway station.
Widening of the bridges across the canal was imperative as it would facilitate free flow of water.
In view of the recommendation from WRD, the Highways department would be taking steps to widen the Manali Road bridge at Korukkupet.
Likewise, the National Highways Authority of India would undertake repair works, including replacement of hand rail and blacktopping of the surface, at the bridge on Ennore Expressway between Kargil Nagar and Satyamurthy Nagar. Widening of the facility is under consideration, NHAI sources said

Current System
Phase 1 Vehicles coming from Nungambakkam High Road and moving towards Thousand Lights and Cathedral Road proceed at the green signal
Phase 2 Vehicles coming from Nungambakkam High Road and going towards Teynampet and G N Chetty Road stop at a second signal before proceeding
Phase 3 On Cathedral Road, vehicles moving to Nungambakkam and Teynampet proceed at the green signal
Phase 4 On Cathedral Road, vehicles taking a right to Thousand Lights go ahead and wait at another signal on the other side of the flyover
Phase 5 Vehicles on G N Chetty Road and going towards Thousand Lights and Nungambakkam proceed at the green signal. Those taking a right towards Cathedral Road stop again before proceeding
Phase 6 Vehicles moving from Thousand Lights to Nungambakkam go through the loop of the flyover and stop at a signal on the road to Nungambakkam
Proposed System
Phase 1 | The right turn | Vehicles taking a right from Nungambakkam High Road to Teynampet and from Cathedral Road to Thousand Lights will move at the same time. By allowing vehicles in these two directions to flow simultaneously, backlog of vehicles is reduced to a great extent
Phase 2 | Straight forward | Vehicles from Nungambakkam High Road to Cathedral Road and vice versa will move simultaneously
Phase 3 | G N Chetty Rd and ahead | Vehicles going from G N Chetty Road to Thousand Lights and Cathedral Road will travel at the same time
CHENNAI: Waiting time under Anna flyover at the Gemini junction may soon reduce with the highways department planning to redirect the flow of traffic, remove the roundabout, and create more lanes.
More than 20,000 cars use the Anna Salai-Nungambakkam High Road junction at Gemini every hour during peak traffic times. The highways department has approved a proposal from a non-governmental organisation City Connect to change the flow of traffic and replace the roundabout with eight traffic islands. The department sent a cost estimate to the transport secretary for approval on Monday.
"There will be an improvement in efficiency that will increase the capacity of the intersection by 50%," said Mark Selvaraj, technical director for Landtech Engineers, a consultancy firm involved in the project.
The plan is to dedicate separate lanes for vehicles taking a right turn from Cathedral Road towards Thousand Lights on Anna Salai and for those turning right from Nungambakkam High Road onto Anna Salai towards Teynampet. The movement of vehicles in both these directions will be at the same time. "The traffic density is the highest in these directions," said Selvaraj. "This will reduce the pile-up of vehicles at the junction."
The current six signal phases will be reduced to three. The roundabout will be removed to make space for more lanes. Instead, eight traffic islands will be created and the horse statue will have to be relocated. The traffic islands will segregate vehicles moving in different directions. "They will also act as a refuge for pedestrians trying to cross the road," said Selvaraj.
Currently, all traffic going from Nungambakkam to Teynampet, Cathedral Road to Thousand Lights and beach-bound traffic from G N Chetty Road have to wait at two signals before they can leave the intersection. "Not only do traffic police require more manpower but the signals also make vehicles wait longer," said Selvaraj.
According to the highways department, the project is estimated to be around Rs 90 lakh. "The changes have been welcomed by the traffic police and our engineers. The budget is not a problem and we expect approval from state government soon," said a senior highway official. "The transport minister did express his concern over the loss of aesthetic value," he added.
Selvaraj said the changes have been designed on a short-term basis with quick benefits. "The islands can be beautified according to international standards and the changes can be implemented in three weeks," he said.

CHENNAI: Anakaputhur residents are hoping the state government will step in to break the deadlock between the highways department and the air force so that they get a flyover that they have been awaiting.
Work on a flyover across the Adyar river at Anakaputhur came to a halt in May after the Indian Air Force (IAF) station in Tambaram said a portion of the land being used for the flyover belonged to the defence ministry. The IAF said the highways department had not got approval from the ministry to use the 980sqm of land. Tambaram revenue officials and village administrative officers confirmed IAF's claim.
"The state government should help us get the work completed before the onset of north-east monsoon. For years, we have been wading through neck-deep water, especially during the monsoon, to cross the river to reach Anakaputhur and Pallavaram. The flyover will be a lifeline," said R Kalanthari, president, Tharapakkam village panchayat. The flyover will connect Anakaputhur and Tharapakkam village.

Could anyone help me out in getting the Rengarajapuram flyover image..(where it starts in West mambalam side...)...could anyone help me how to do search in this thread alone about that topic?
I have 1 more question also.. if the flyover is y shaped...how the traffic from Bazhullah road will take a right turn to Kodambakkam? or simillarly how the traffic from West mamballam side will reach bazhullah road when people are taking right turn to Kodambakkam side...
Sorry, if this would have been discussed & answered earlier..

Flyover planned at the IRR - Arcot road junction at Vadapalani. this has the road at the first level and the metro at the second level above it.
The estimated cost allocated for land acquisition for this is around Rs 30 crores
But the revenue department officials are indifferent to the project
When the IRR was expanded in 1982 - 1986, compensation was provided to people whose lands were acquired in this area.
But the revenue department has not updated its records and changed the ownership of the land from these people to the state highways department.
20 years later, their records still show the original owners. This is creating confusions in determining the ownership of the lands required now for the flyover
Due to such problems, the land acquisition has not started even after 6 years of announcing the project
Also, there was a case against acquisition filed by the Vengeeswarar temple near the junction. That came to a close only in February
The process of notifying 3 villages (saligramam and two others) is going on. Soon the land will be acquired

The flyover is being constructed at the Mount - Poonamalle, Trunk Poonamalle, arcot Road - Kunrathur highway junction at a cost of Rs 34 Crores and 72 Lakhs
It is 480 metres long and 37 metres wide with service lanes of 7.5 metres widht on both sides
Work started in Feb 2010 and was estimated to be completed in 18 months.
But most of the land at the junction was patta land and hence there were problems with the compensation amount. The resulting acquisition problems caused delay in the project.
Finally, the land acquisition was completed and the works started again. Out of 14 pillars, only 5 have been completed.
The construction of flyover at the porur junction has stalled because the Water Supply board has not shifted the water pipelines that supply water from Chembarambakkam Lake to southern Chennai despite being paid Rs. 5.5 Crores almost 1 year back
Work can now progress only after the water board shifts the giant pipes.
As per the highway officials, "Land acquisition is taking some time as the lands belong to the villages in the area (dont know what Natham in tamil means). Plus the owner of a shop named "Kumar sweets" has resisted the acquisition and has got a stay order. The local MLA has promised to help with this.
And due to the metro water pipes, work has come to a stand still.
According to the Metro water officials, " There has been no delay due to metro water board. We got the letter from the highway department, requesting the shifting of pipes, only a month back. We need to shift pipes of around 350 metres and we are doing that. We have already finalized the private contractor for this. We are waiting for the materials. Once they arrive, we'll start works in one or two months."
vijayvmail September 13th, 2011, 07:25 AM The construction work on the Rs.16.66-crore rail overbridge at the junction of Kathivakkam High Road-Cochrane Basin Road is expected to be completed by March 2012, Mayor M.Subramanian said on Tuesday.
Speaking to presspersons after inspecting the work, he said that a flyover to replace the level-crossing at the location was a long pending demand of the residents of Korukkupet. The work is being jointly executed by the Southern Railway and Chennai Corporation. Of the total Rs.16.66 crore, the civic body will provide Rs.12.20 crore and the Southern Railway Rs.4.46 crore, he said.
Delay over land acquisition
The work had been delayed as a couple of residents had gone to court against land acquisition for the project. Shifting of service lines also took over a year.
Though the civic body had paid Rs.1.60 crore to the Chennai Metrowater in November 2007 for shifting of service lines, the work was completed only in March 2009, after which the piling work commenced in August 2009.
A total of 101 huts on railway land on Cochrane Basin Road were also removed and the residents provided with alternative accommodation at Semmanchery by the Tamil Nadu Slum Clearance Board.
All the 52 piles, 13 pile caps, 13 piers and 7 out of 13 pier caps had been completed so far.
The Southern Railway is expected to complete its work by the end of this year after which the Corporation would take three more months to complete the work, Mr. Subramanian said.

The flyover-and-Metro Rail station facility to come up at Vadapalani junction
Work on the city's first ‘double-decker' structure featuring a flyover and a Metro Rail station above it at the junction of Arcot Road and Jawaharlal Nehru Salai in Vadapalani has begun.
According to sources in Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL), piling work is going apace. The facility is planned to come across the busy Jawaharlal Nehru Salai, also known as 100 feet Road.
A portion of the 700-metre-long, four-lane flyover would be constructed by the CMRL. The Highways Department would construct ramps, drains, service roads and footpaths.
Land acquisition from three revenue villages of Kodambakkam, Puliyur and Saligramam is in progress and is expected to be completed by the first week of October, said sources in the Highways Department.
The flyover would be 18.6 metres wide. The service roads on either side would be 7.5 metre wide and the drainage-cum-footpaths on both sides 2.5 m wide. After widening, the total width of Arcot Road would be nearly 39 metres.???
According to S.Krishnamoorthy, Chief General Manager (PR), CMRL, work on construction of their portion of the flyover would be completed in seven to eight months after the Highways Department hands over the land to them.
The Highways Department would take another six months to complete its portion of work. The CMRL will complete the construction and then claim the amount spent from the Highways Department, he said. During the construction of the flyover, arrangements have to be made for traffic diversion.
A.Jainulabdeen, a resident of Ashok Nagar, said with the existing arrangement, it takes about 20 minutes in rush hour traffic to move from Ashok Pillar to Kodambakkam.
“Some 10 years ago they used to allow straight traffic from Kodambakkam to Vadapalani. But now motorists have to take a detour to reach Vadapalani. If the flyover comes, it would reduce travel time and save fuel consumption. But it remains to see how the flyover will look with the Metro Rail station,” he said.

for this project, land was acquired from 12 private parties who filed cases in court against the acquisition
Out of these, corporation was able to come to a settlement with 10 parties and their land was acquired
The remaining 2 private parties did not agree to any settlement and went ahead with court cases

* DPR was planned for this flyover in 2004-2005.
* Since the gvt changed in 2006, the flyover got approved in 2009 only
* The flyover is coming near Porur lake, soil test revealed that soil is soft so work was put on hold
* Due to increase in congestion, works started again with land acquisition and 4 pillars were constructed and then works stopped completely
* After 2months of new gvt, Maduravoyl MLA stepped in to speed up the project!! First attempt was to expand the roads so encroachments in 4 corners were pulled down
* This flyover (Poonamallae-Guindy direction) cost is 34.72crores. 480m is the length of the flyover and service road will be laid in both the sides of the flyover
* In 34.72crores, 19.7crores alone will be spend for land acquistion for service roads below the flyover.
* Avobe 19.7crores are already given to concerned department of TNEB, PWD etc., but yet the work has not yet resumed.
* Motorist spend 30minutes to cross this congested flyover daily.

117-Crore Project Will Cut Down Travel Time, To Be Completed By May 2013
Motorists crossing the Nelson Manickam Road-EVR Salai junction and the EVR Salai-Anna Nagar 3rd Avenue junction will not have to wait at any of the signals from May 2013.
A 117-crore project for two flyovers and a subway near Anna Arch, initiated by the state highways, is expected to decongest roads around the arch. Though the idea was mooted in 2003 with the World Bank keen on funding it, the works started only on May 2, 2011.
Here is how the new system would work: There will be free lefts on both the junctions, while L-shaped flyovers and a similarly shaped subway will facilitate free right turns.
“Both the flyovers will start on EVR Salai (Poonamallee High Road). While one will lead to Nelson Manickam Road, the other will fork out on Anna Nagar 3rd Avenue. One end of the fork will lead vehicles back on EVR Salai and the other will continue towards Anna Nagar,” said an official from the metro wing of the highways department.
“This is going to be a great relief,” says Anna Nagar resident Ajith Venkatesh who drives past the two signals to his office in Nungambakkam. “Now it takes almost half an hour to drive from Anna Nagar ‘roundtana’ to Nelson Manickam Road.”
Going by the plan, Venkatesh’s drive will be shorter by 25 minutes. Commuters from Nelson Manickam Road wanting to take a right towards Chennai Central will instead have to take a left turn and use a flyover on EVR Salai that will turn into Anna Nagar 3rd Avenue briefly and then loop back onto EVR Salai towards Chennai Central. Commuters wanting to go towards to Anna Nagar will use the other fork. This flyover will be 590 metres long with a 7.5 metre-wide carriage way.
The other flyover starting on the left of Anna Arch on EVR Salai will directly land on Nelson Manickam Road for all commuters from Koyambedu and Anna Nagar. This flyover will be 520 metres with width of carriage way. The subway will start from Anna Nagar and will be used by commuters wanting to go to Koyambedu. “The portion of the subway at the junction will be underground, so that vehicles can go over it,” said the official. The subway will be 615 metres long.
More than 20,000 passenger cars use these junctions every hour. The highways has acquired about 19,000 sq m of land for the project. Of this, 14,603 sq m belong to the state government.

prabhu007 October 4th, 2011, 02:09 PM Dear friends,
Like many of you, I have suffered with Nelson Manickam road traffic jams a million times. The culprit behind so much traffic is the 1 lane stretch between Mehta nagar bus stop and Choolaimedu signal. I have drawn a new route proposal. Please post your thoughts.
A new bridge to be built on the Red part of the map
All traffic towards Nungambakkam to turn left after Mehta nagar bus stop, go over the new bridge on top of the canal
Vehicles proceeding towards Nungambakkam to turn right, join Choolaimedu high road and turn left and take the subway
Bus stop shall be placed just before taking the left turn
Vehicle towards Aminjikarai shall take left and join Choolaimedu High road
Vehicles on the other side from Nungambakkam towards Mehta nagar shall not be disturbed. Once past the subway it will be One Way traffic till Mehta nagar bus stop
Vehicles from Choolaimedu high road (from station side) to take the one way and loop through to reach the other side
And finally we need a FOB for all the crowd.
AFAIK this is the cheapest possible solution for this road. I heard about multi level flyovers and all that, but i'm sure it is just not possible to build even a single pillar with so much traffic. While this new bridge that I proposed is built, the current traffic will be totally unaffected.
Please post ur valuable suggestions.

Not a bad idea but already elevated highway going to occupy half the cooum and that river bank has high density of unauthorised slums. so forget it.

How will this reduce congestion on NM road? I will still be stuck in traffic when I go towards Loyola College from Aminjikarai. The entire road is a bottle neck and when traffic piles up near Nungambakkam subway signal, its just going to be the same way. The only solution is they need to widen the NM road uniformly and eliminate signal near the subway. If they can make this junction signal free then there will be free flowing of traffic

• Inner Ring Road (IRR) is a major stretch connecting important roads radiating from the city. There is a major intersection on this stretch at Kolathur, where roads from Perambur and Redhills join the IRR
PALLAVARAM FLYOVER
Three-lane flyover along GST Road, combining Kundrathur Road junction, Sandhai Road junction and Old Trunk Road junction (near Areva factory )
• GST Road (NH 45) is a major arterial road connecting the city with the southern parts of the state. The stretch of GST Road in Pallavaram area has two major intersections with the major arterial roads of Sandhai Road and Kundrathur Road
• Peak hour (7.30pm-8.30pm) traffic at Kundrathur Road junction is 11,721 passenger car units per hour. Peak hour traffic at Sandhai Road junction is 10,868 passenger car units per hour
• Total cost of project is about 86.2 crore
----------------------------------------------
CHENNAI: Driving past the intersections at Velachery, Pallavaram and Kolathur may be a new experience in a while as a steering committee on city infrastructure has approved new flyovers at these places.
A pair of unidirectional flyovers that cross each other at different heights will change the face of the Velachery junction. While Pallavaram will get the longest flyover in the city, at 1.3 km, Kolathur will have a much wider, six-lane, flyover.
Preliminary calculations show that these three flyovers would cost around 255 crore. "The cost could vary depending on the soil quality which decides the nature of construction," said a highways official.
The steering committee consisting of representatives from Chennai Corporation, Metropolitan Transport Corporation, Railways, Chennai Metropolitan Development Authority and Chennai City Traffic Police met on Tuesday to finalise a design for each of the intersections. The designs were done by Stup Consultants, a private firm. "The designs were chosen considering structural feasibility and land availability," the official said.
The Indian Roads Congress recommends construction of flyovers at junctions which have traffic of more than 10,000 passenger car units (PCUs). At the Velachery junction, where two arterial roads - Velachery Main Road and Velachery By-pass Road - meet, the traffic density is close to 10,500 PCUs during peak hours. The twin flyovers here have been proposed at a cost of about 82 crore. These will eliminate the need for signals.
At the junction where the two flyovers cross overhead, the first tier - meant for vehicles from the Guindy-Tambaram direction - will be at a height of 7 metres from the ground. The second tier, which will be at a height of 16 metres, will cater to vehicles going from Taramani to Velachery Bypass Road.
The project perhaps gives the biggest relief to ambulance services. "Once the new flyover is in place, the time taken for shifting patients from Velachery to the Government Royapettah Hospital will come down to 25 minutes," says B Prabhudoss, regional manager of 108 ambulance services.
The benefit could be the same for those taking GST Road from Tambaram to Guindy, once the proposed flyover comes up at Pallavaram. At 1.3km, it will be one of the longest flyovers in the city, and will run across three intersections where GST Road meets Kundrathur Road, Sandhai Road and Old Trunk Road. "I take at least 45 minutes to cross these three junctions. The proposed flyover will help me reach office on time," said James, a regular user of the stretch.
At the Kolathur intersection, where roads from Perambur and Red Hills join the Inner Ring Road, an 800 metre, six-lane flyover is being proposed to beat congestion caused by 13,000 passenger car units during peak hours. Engineers, however, warn that with increasing vehicular population, flyovers cannot be a solution forever. "This arrangement will cater to traffic only up to 2017," an engineer said.

The plan for Vijayanagar sounds good - but still the signal will not be eliminated, right? Is it feasible to improve the plan so that the signal is eliminated?
murlee October 12th, 2011, 08:41 AM edit
prathapdba October 12th, 2011, 08:46 AM if they construct this then there is no need for signals for major traffics but required for velachery road intersection (in the picture)
ezhilan81 October 12th, 2011, 11:38 AM It does eliminate the signal completely. They have wrongly showed the arrow taking a right at the Junction that intersects Tambaram-Taramani straight traffic. This is a very sensible design IMO
mr_madras October 12th, 2011, 12:51 PM Due to space constraint we cannot provide signal free intersection anywhere in city. these flyovers only helps certain direction commuters and others has to wait. all under construction / proposed flyovers are in that category except NM road/PH road/Arch flyover.
Murali Bala October 12th, 2011, 01:07 PM They have started moving the centre Median on Velachery Tambaram road to provide 10ft (one lane) more. This would give all traffic to use more space and free left is also planned to Bye pass road. This will reduce the waiting time from 30 minutes to 20 mintes. something is better than nothing. The bottleneck of Sutherland building still remains. The higway way authorities have aquired all other areas except this "Anjaa Nenjan CDS builder" who refuses to budge a single inch. I wish one all the traffic is diverted into his building for honking him out.

Exactly; Sutherland building is the bottleneck now - if its a stay order from court, why the authorities are not working to get it vacated? Hopefully, something will be done after the local elections.
BTW, car parking space is very less in this building and if they move their wall back there will be no carparking space at all - thats what making them so stubborn

This reminds me of the Koyambedu flyover where the problem is Hotel Shaan Royal who I guess have a stay order to demolish the wall. Now the flyover has been completed and the wall still remains. No clue when that wall will be demolished to make way for another lane. The govt even tried closing down that hotel with complaints from Pollution Control board, but I guess its in vain.

2. Where exactly did you take the last pic? just after the slope on the other side of rly gate?

Why are they taking it to station road when they have a straight road opposite to gate to connect to GST?
1. For me it doesnt look like a 4 laned flyover. Hv to wait and see
2. Yes, last pic was taken from point C in the map towards west. Just after the slope on the western side of rly gate
Nice Pics CP :) What is the deadline for this flyover ??
No idea DP. With railways involved in it, no use in knowing the deadline.
Vandalur ROB is taking years to complete just because of a small portion over Railways. :bash:

That straight road has less space for vehicles. Plus there is a temple, church and a mosque on that road. Lot of local politicians live there.. it is impossible to vacate their structures, hence they took this alignment. But this is going to add more traffic to already choked guduvancheri gst road junction..

FATE UNCERTAIN
No word from govt on Anna Salai flyover
Karthikeyan Hemalatha TNN
:bash::bash::bash::bash::bash::bash::bash:
Chennai: With the Chennai Metro Rail work going on in full swing on Anna Salai, the much anticipated twin-elevated roads will no longer be built.
Highways department officials say that piling work for the elevated roads should have been completed before the tunneling work started but they did not receive any communication from the state government to start the project.
“So we assume that our project has been scrapped,” said a senior highways department official.
For the elevated road, each pile should ideally be at a depth of 30 metres from the ground while the tunneling happens at around 17 metres.
The highways department thought they could start piling work by September last year. But Chennai Metro Rail Limited is now in the final stages of soil testing and the tunneling work will start by January. And the highways department has not received word from the government about flyovers.
As per the plans, two elevated highways measuring 1.8 km and 2.9 km in length were to come up on Anna Salai.
The first one was to begin at the now unused secretariat and will fly across Blackers Road junction, Dams Road-General Patters Road junction and Binny Road- Patullos Road Junction near Spencer Plaza.
The second one begins at Anna Arivalayam and flies over Eldams Road- Thyagaraya Road intersection, Cenotaph Road junction, Nandanam Signal and CIT Colony First Main Road junction.
jayaraj100 October 17th, 2011, 08:40 PM ^^Oneway I feel it is good. It will not visually clutter the Mount Road (at least for now). 3-5 years of constructing sub-standard flyover (with low cost white 'chunna' painted, 1000s of cars parked below the flyover-because the height of the bridge cannot allow another vehicle below it, etc). Enough....
Come to Electronic City flyover (9km) in Bangalore. It does not resolve any problem rather it created more and more problem. Moreover it clutters.
I cant imagine such flyover in Mount Road... It is one of the beautiful road... lets leave the road as it is.
It may sound awkward, since I am saying no to flyover in Mount Road... But going by aesthetic and real use of these large size speed braker shaped will not help anythign other than politician to get contract (definitely it is not going to be done by L&T type builder but by politician) and screw up the rest of road during construction and screw up for rest of the century by visual cluttering....
They are spending crores of Rs extra to make Metro underground just for this logic, cant understand why road should be elevated. If road can be elevated structure and can spoil the look of the road, so do Metro...
No Flyover over MOunt Road....
I would even prefer removing mega size speed brake constructed by T.R Balu in front of Airport. make it underground trumpet. It spoils the whole aesthetic of the upcoming airport look....
darkprinz October 18th, 2011, 04:37 AM ^^ +1 to what u said ... Especially painting the flyover pillars with dull yellow or aqua colors makes it even more worse ... For solving the traffic in mount road, they can build subways at important intersections ... Of course same should be done by some professional companies not by govt companies ...

+1 They can try a limited use underpass for cars and two wheelers at all major intersection will solve most of the problem. For Eg the most busy signal junction Spencer signal has 90% car and two wheeler traffic crossing the road from eithraj college road to Pathous road ( Sorry abt the spelling) . If a limited use underpass and FOB for pedestrains will solve 75% of the traffic on the road.

It will reduce the congestion to the state it was 5 years ago perhaps. but then in 5 years time you will end up with the same situation of today! These two metro lines will in no way solve everyone's traffic problem, only those who are traveling along the corridors.
vijayvmail October 24th, 2011, 04:41 AM CHENNAI: Traffic in the southern suburbs may get better soon as a flyover at Pallavaram will be completed by mid-November and another at another at Vandalur by mid-January. One, costing Rs 18 crore will fly over the Pallavaram railway station, while other, costing Rs 23.67 crore will connect the east and west sides of the Vandalur railway station.
They are being built jointly by the highways department and the Southern Railway. "The structures are almost done. Now the government has to decide on their inauguration," said a highways official. The projects have been delayed for more than a year. "In both the projects, we completed our portion more than a year ago, but the railways failed to complete a small stretch it was to build," said a highways official.
The railways says it cannot help the slow pace of the work. "The construction work can happen only between midnight and 3am as we have to stop the power supply," said an official. "We cannot work through the day as there will be electric trains passing and there is a risk of 25,000 watts of electricity being short-circuited."
The unfinished portion of the Pallavaram road over bridge (ROB) is 71 metres and that of Vandalur is 36 metres. At completion, the Pallavaram flyover will be 650 metres and the Vandalur flyover will be 1,200 metres. The Pallavaram ROB, built at a cost of Rs 5.5 crore by the railways, will cross five broad gauge tracks. At Vandalur, the bridge will run across three metre gauge tracks and an unused track, and will cost the railways Rs 4 crore.
Both the flyovers will have a bowstring design similar to that of the recently-opened Rangarajapuram flyover. Once the railway finishes its portion, the highways department will need another month. "We have to build staircases for people to enter the railway station," said an official.
The unfinished flyover in Pallavaram almost claimed a life in April last year when a car flew off its edge. There was no barricade or signboard displayed to tell commuters that the flyover was incomplete.

Economy booming, people get richer, more cars on the roads.... And the cycle continues.
Atleast, that's the projected image.
But a major misconception is that grade separators CAUSE traffic. There are exceptions to this.
They ease it, but by the time they're done, traffic would've increased.

+1.
But the whole thing of economic boom etc is applied only when such jams happen abroad. If it happens in Chennai its because of shortsighted politicians.
Also when grade separators in IRR opened most claimed it wont solve the problem and some even called it miniature comparing em with ones in expressways. But they sure reduced the problem greatly.
