CM to open Kodambakkam flyover
Chennai, March 29: The first bridge constructed by the present DMK regime to ease traffic in the city would be inaugurated by chief minister M. Karunanidhi on Sunday. The North Usman Road flyover, built on the intersection of Kodambakkam High Road and Mahalingapuram Road, at a cost of Rs 9.72 crore will reduce traffic bottlenecks in the Kodambakkam, Mahalingapuram and T. Nagar areas. On Saturday, state local administration minister M K Stalin inspected the flyover and reviewed the finishing touches on the spot. It is a two-way flyover running through a length of 472 mts with a width of 8 mts constructed in six months. Chennai mayor M Subramanian, corporation commissioner Rajesh Lakhoni and top civic officials were present with Mr Stalin during the inspection.
According to corporation sources, at least a dozen bridges would be completed in Chennai in the next two years. Traffic congestion in Kodambakkam and T. Nagar would ease by this October as constructions of four bridges are nearing completion. Designs are also ready for four new bridges at Madhya Kailash, Thiruvanmiyur, Mint junction and Basin Bridge, the sources said. The bridge in T. Nagar near Pothys junction would be ready by July. Piling works are underway at G N Chetty Road and this bridge would be inaugurated by October.CM to open Kodambakkam flyover

TechCity April 23rd, 2008, 08:42 AM From Chennai Projects Update thread - III Thread,
Some more news.........
CHENNAI: Stalin to the incumbent M Subramanian, Chennai Corporation’s answer to traffic jams has always been flyovers and more flyovers.
Even as 11 flyover projects are already under way across the city, the Mayor announced three new flyovers - two in North Chennai and one in South - during the budget announcement on Wednesday.
In North , flyovers will be built at Cemetry Road-Washermenpet clock tower intersection and at Ganeshapuram railway subway, while in South , a flyover with a vehicular subway will be constructed at Thiruvanmiyur- Lattice Bridge Road intersection.
In addition, Chennaiites have reasons to cheer as the Mayor announced that 11 small bridges would be constructed across main waterways to connect residential settlements developed on the banks of these canals.
Such small bridges will be built on Buckingham Canal (Ezhil Nagar-Nehru Nagar), Captain Cotton Canal (Vivekananda Nagar-Rajiv Gandhi Nagar and Krishnamurthy Nagar-M K B Nagar), Otteri Nullah (Narashimma Nagar-S M Nagar and N Block-O Block), Virigambakkam Canal (Paari Street- Kannagi Street), Trustpuram Canal (Bajanai Koil Street), Mambalam Canal (Sathiyamurthi Nagar-B Block), Velacherry Canal (Vijayanagar and Velachery byepass- Venkateshwara Nagar) and Raj Bhavan Canal (Mathialagan Street-Nehru Nagar).
To ease traffic congestion at R K Mutt Road area, it has been planned to develop a new link road at Adyar, to connect Greenways Road and Durgabai Deshmukh Road via Music College campus, while a proposed four-lane road connecting Anna Nagar and Ayanavaram (New Avadi Road- Medavakkam Tank Road-Raju Naicker Road) will be carried out after acquiring land from Metrowater and Institute of Mental Health, Kilpauk, Subramanian added.
For the benefit of road users the Corporation has proposed to concretise 13 arterial roads in North Chennai.

Guys,You have to know tamil to understand this.
Fusionist April 24th, 2008, 09:32 PM Thanks for your effort in crossposting the flyover psts TechCity. Very kind of you
Very interesting link in the blog aswell. Thanks for sharing. I rcently highlighted the lane weaving issue which could potentialle be another problem as the loops in Kathipara becomes operational. The more the public are made aware of these, the harder it will be for planners and constructors to get away with poor and unsafe designs.

Whatever issues we are talking,It should have happend for other countries also.
If the same issue is happening everywhere means,we cant blame govt for that.
Whether cloverleaf model bridges in other countries got success or not?
I want to know, which is wrong, the cloverleaf model,or our implemenation.
That blog is talking aboyt something "shoulder". That is good point. We are missing that. But lane weaving issue is possible in all cloverleaf model bridges, right.

I think there are problems with the cloverleaf model itself but a lot more can be added if it is poorly implemented. Cloverleafs necessarily have weaving, but if the size of the cloverleaf itself is large and the loops spaced apart, and if the volume of traffic in the loops is relatively less, then the cloverleaf would suffice.
In Kathipara's case the flow of high volume traffic is a bit different. There is high volume of traffic on the Airport to Anna Salai sector and by the present u/c flover it has to use the loop after havbing to 'weave' across the traffic from Anna Salai to IRR which is the problem area.
For example here is an idea of how the cloverleafs are being handled in the US & UK..
A point of conflict is the merging of exiting and entering traffic in the same lane, known as weaving. Most road authorities have since been implementing new interchange designs with more straight exit ramps that do not result in weaving. These interchanges include the diamond, parclo and Single-point urban (SPUI) interchanges when connecting to an arterial road, and the stack or cloverstack when connecting to another freeway or to a busy arterial where signals are still not desired.
Not only is this true for new interchanges but it also holds when existing cloverleaf interchanges are upgraded. In Norfolk, Virginia, the interchange between U.S. 13 and U.S. 58 was originally a cloverleaf--it has since been converted to a SPUI. And many cloverleaf interchanges on California freeways are being converted to parclos. In Hampton, Virginia, a cloverleaf interchange between Interstate 64 and U.S. Route 258 has been partially unwound into a partial stack interchange. From now until 2010, four cloverleaf interchanges along I-64/US 40 in St. Louis, Missouri are scheduled to be replaced with SPUIs as part of a major highway renovation project.
A compromise is to add a collector/distributor road next to the freeway; this doesn't eliminate weaving but moves it off the main lanes of the freeway. An example of this is the State Highway 23/I-43 interchange in Sheboygan, Wisconsin, where the exit/entrance roads on and off Highway 23 is two lanes next to the main I-43 freeway on the north and southbound sides of the road.
A few cloverleaf interchanges in California have been rebuilt to eliminate weaving on the freeway while keeping all eight loop ramps, by adding bridges.
Several cloverleafs have been eliminated by adding traffic lights on the non-freeway route. Sometimes, this is even done at the intersection of two freeways, particularly when one freeway terminates at an interchange with another. An example of this is in Lakewood, Washington, at the interchange between Interstate 5 and State Route 512. A visible ramp stub shows that one of the four leaves was removed; thus eliminating an unsafe weave on I-5. In the future, the traffic signal will be replaced by a 2 lane flyover, completing the freeway to freeway interchange once again. [1]
Cloverleafs also occupy much more land than any other kind of interchange (with the possible exception of stack interchanges).
The cloverleaf interchange was not implemented in great numbers in the United Kingdom, owing to these design issues. There were originally three, one in Redditch and two in Livingston. One of the Livingston examples was remodeled in the mid 2000s as part of a public transport project. The major junction of the M11 and A14 at the Girton interchange near the outskirts of Cambridge consists of two cloverleaf loops, making essentially a 'half' cloverleaf interchange. This junction is prone to heavy traffic congestion at peak times, chiefly due to the requirement for westbound A14 traffic to exit the main dual carriageway, traverse one of the cloverleaf loops at slow speeds, then engage in weaving with traffic exiting the M11, in order to continue westward along the A14.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cloverleaf_interchange
more..
The father of all four-way interchanges, Cloverleaves started appearing in the 1920s, connecting American and German motorways together. In this country they were pencilled into early plans for the motorway network in the 1950s, and the original set of motorway direction signs included a set specifically for use on this type of junction. However, better junction designs had evolved by the time we had two motorways actually crossing each other. No cloverleaf was ever built on the UK network, and today only three exist across the whole country.
Though they exist across the world, they are now widely discredited in most places. Most American states have active policies to remove them from busy routes, mostly because of the weaving problems they create
http://www.cbrd.co.uk/reference/interchanges/cloverleaf.shtml
What bothers me is how can the planners living in the 21st century fail to take note of all these problems that other countries have gone through for decades completely ignore all these and come up with a design that is outdated and unsafe ??
TechCity April 28th, 2008, 06:57 AM Will Koyembedu model solve that weaving issue? It has 3 loops and 1 is underpass.

Koymebedu bridge follows which model?any name we have?like "modified cloverleaf"....

weaving would still be there. even the one merging from city side (ponamallee towards west) into IRR towards Anna nagar would have to cut across traffic on IRR north that intends to take ponamallee rd east.
but that should not be problem for this interchange. most traffic is along irr. traffic from irr south going to ponamallee west would reduce soon once chennai bypass completes. and one along ponamallee N & S - port traffic could also reduce in the elevated port connectivity road materializes.
point fusionist is making is if a cloverleaf flyover has specific turns that has high traffic then it needs to be avoided. kathipara potentially has such issue. traffic from guindy along anna salai towards IRR north merges just before the one from airport towards anna salai. from pictures this distance looks like about 200m. i think that should be sufficient for vehicles to criss cross. it is not as though we drive at 60 miles per hour. these are city roads and not interchanges for expressways. i am not too bothered.
i think these design are overkill. remember these junctions are all at grade and currently managed through traffic lights.

Consider annasalai to irr flow,we can use the existing loop,
GST to annasalai flow, turning left and going through the underpass like koymbedu design will solve weaving issue, right.Anyway when it enters, still weaving is there.

I think we can not have major design changes at this point since the construction is in advanced stage.
I find that the turning radius, width and the lane interchange zone length as the limiting factors. Volume traffic should be physically measured and precautions have to be taken. Speed restriction is must.
Sudden thought. In case a traffic jam occurs right on the grade separator, how it will be controlled and regularised without the help of traffic cops? Vehicles turning left and vehicles going straight / right from the left lane will bump into each other.

Koyambedu interchange also has weaving issues. However I don't think it will have the same degree of problem as the lane merging might cause in the Kathipara. This is because of the traffic volume pattern. In Koyambedu high traffic lanes like the IRR and PHR have been kept straight and clean, so there is less chance of traffic jams in this plan.
However I would think it is better to have a re-evaloation of Koyambedu plans before it is implemented as there could be better options.
As for the Kathipara, if you check out the Chennai Project Updat ethread ( posts nos arouns 1520 to 1550 ) we had a detailed discussion on the issue. The plan which I think avoids weaving completely, and can be managed in just about the same space without much aded costs is the one below..
http://i31.tinypic.com/2rdgo6x.jpg
Features:
1. Takes just about the same space.
2. Would cost just about the same.
3. Gets rid of small loops. ie. more safe especially the Meridian loop which probably is very tight.
4. gets rid of ALL weaving throughout the interchange. !!
5. Only 2 levels
However this might not be applicable to Koyambedu or Padi. It is better to treat each project individually rather than applying the model best suited for one project on another.

This is perfect design. I think this is ok for Koyembedu also.
Leo_r April 30th, 2008, 11:00 AM How about reserving and marking the extreme left lane in the interchange on both directions (Gst-Irr)" only for Exit and Entry". That will solve the problem. They can initiate that practice now itself.

futurebiz1 May 1st, 2008, 08:08 AM Hundreds of crores are being spent on mega flyovers in Chennai. It is no use if traffic flows freely over the flyovers but gets stuck everywhere else..In the case of Kathipara though the congestion has eased at the junction it does not mean a smooth ride from saidapet as there is usually a big jam from the Halda junction to Gunidy Bus stop..The reason for this is not any traffic junction but the Gunidy Bus stop and the Share autos..The Govt has spent Hundreds of Crores for Kathipara flyover but has not taken care of to design bus bays isolated from the main traffic at Guindy, one of the most congested bus stops in Chennai.Of course, designing of bus bays and foothpaths is a lot less glamorous than huge grade seperators.
Another future bottleneck would be the Thirumangalam Junction. The Padi rotary will be hopefully completed this year and Koyambedu grade seperator would be completed some time next year(i guess) but what will be the purpose of these if the Thirumangalam junction, which lies exactly between these two, is ignored..Though a grade seperator is not feasible in Tirumangalam owing to lack of space atleast a simple flyover should be constructed so that the vehicles taking the 100 ft road just pass over.

As fusionist has rightly mentioned, we know the design inefficiency that is associated with cloverleaf junctions. What we need is a multi level stack interchange (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stack_interchange). The interchange design requires a much lower footprint compared to a clover leaf and eliminates the weaving issue all together.
It is really disheartening to see the lack of foresight by the traffic planning authorities. They should not be choosing a design and then tendering out the construction, but should include let the construction companies provide the design. This way the most efficient design, with the best bang for buck can be chosen.

4 May 2008, 0549 hrs IST,TNN
CHENNAI: Construction of the Perambur flyover will be taken up by this month-end and will be completed in 18 month's time, according to mayor M Subramanian.

Into_salem May 5th, 2008, 06:35 PM Chennai: The Chennai Corporation Council on Saturday resolved to seek the State government’s approval to award the Perambur flyover contract to construction firm IVRCL.
IVRCL Infrastructures & Projects and Madhava Hitech Engineers Limited had responded to the Corporation’s tender for the construction of the flyover. IVRCL, a firm headquartered in Hyderabad, made the lower bid of Rs. 41.57 crore.
After negotiations, the firm agreed to bring down the bid to Rs. 41.15 crore, which is 48.86 per cent more than the Corporation’s estimate for the project.
Mayor M. Subramanian said that work on the flyover was slated to begin later this month and scheduled to be completed in 18 months.
The Council also adopted a resolution to upgrade eight hospitals to 24-hour maternity hospitals so that at least one such facility is available in each of the 10 Corporation zones. At present, only Perumalpet and Saidapet have round-the-clock facilities.
Councillors expressed their concern over the death of a young mother in a Corporation maternity hospital in Perambur East owing to negligence in healthcare.

Arul Murugan May 7th, 2008, 05:50 AM Govt wants to hurry up with flyovers
Julie Mariappan | TNN
Chennai: Chennai’s arterial roads have earned the reputation of being the deadliest of all metros, with motorists spending nightmarish moments finding their way around, but the government agencies are still groping in the dark on how to make traffic movement easy.
Life is difficult for for motorists who take the EVR Salai, Anna Salai, Jawaharlal Nehru Road, Surya Narayana Chetty Road or the Moolakadai in North Chennai, where the traffic is bursting at its seems as the number of vehicles touches an all-time high. And people who get caught at junctions like Halda, Teynampet, Spencer’s, Luz Corner, Aminjikarai, Vadapalani, Madhya Kailash and Nandanam curse their fate every morning and evening.
The local body led by the DMK says that it has 14-odd projects for flyovers and subways (at an estimated value of Rs 379.34 crore) in its kitty to largely resolve the problem. The panic in the local administration to hurry up with the projects is demonstrated by the fact that when Anna University delayed approving designs for the set of four flyovers around Thyagaraya Nagar, it went ahead and got the approval from IIT, Bombay, which took just a month to give approval.
Among the four flyovers, the one connecting North Usman Road and Mahalingapuram got completed in a record time and is already in use. Two others, connecting South Usman Road-Duraisamy Road and G N chetty Road-Thirumalaipillai Road, will be thrown to public use by July and December respectively.
Following a reported political intervention, the design of the Cenotaph Road-Turnbulls Road junction flyover was changed and the revised plan requires 14,200 sq ft of land. “We want to reduce the congestion at Nandanam to some extent by building the Cenotaph flyover, but the land acquisition is proving to be difficult. If everything goes well, it will take only two years to complete the project,’’ an official said.
Growing public anger has even forced local administration minister M K Stalin to convene a series of high-level meetings with departmental heads. He took a serious note of the delay by the revenue administration in acquiring lands and rebuked the authorities concerned, it is learnt.
The projects that await land acquisition included vehicular subways at Villivakkam, Korukkupet and Maniakara Choultry Street, flyovers at Kathivakkam High Road-Cocraine Basin Road, Mint Junction, Ganesapuram, and a subway-cum-flyovers at L B Road and Thiruvalluvar Salai intersection. “Work orders for three projects were given in January itself. If there is further delay, the cost of the projects will shoot up enormously,’’ an official said. City mayor M Subramanian belives that these projects would be a solution to the high volume of traffic. “During our previous regime, we constructed nine out of the ten flyovers we had promised, but the successive AIADMK regime could not build even a small bridge connecting channels. With Metro Rail and the circular corridor coming up, traffic will no longer be a problem in the next five years,” Subramanian said.

Leo_r May 7th, 2008, 07:55 PM South Usman-Doraisamy Road Fly over can be completed by July. Good progress has been made. Along with the flyover, they could have planned for a pedestrian subway along Doraisamy road. Huge number of people are crossing this road most of the time, eagerly visiting one shop or the other all along .
barrykul May 7th, 2008, 08:35 PM That entire set of shops, Pothys etc. should be made into one giant mall. If the all the tenants agree, then they can pool up their joint lands and construct one big mall with adequate pedestrian enclosed walkways (above or below street) interconnecting the two on either side of the streets. A giant parking lot is also needed. People come into the the parking lot and enter the mall from the lot. Then the traffic on the street will be much less chaotic. Vision and resolve are needed to make it happen.
Just my opinion.

CHENNAI: The Highways Department will soon begin the groundwork for a four-lane flyover at the Porur junction - the intersection of Mount Poonamallee Road and Arcot Road.
Design for the flyover, to come up along Mount Poonamallee Road to facilitate speedy movement of vehicles between Chennai and Poonamallee, is likely to be finalised in a couple of months.
The project is estimated to cost about Rs. 36 crore, which includes land acquisition charges. According to officials of the Highways Department, once the design is finalised, tenders would be floated and land acquired for the project. The construction work is likely to commence by May next.
About one hectare would have to be acquired from private parties, as the road near the junction has to be widened for the flyover flanked by service lanes. The unmarked bus stop just before the junction would be shifted 100 metres ahead of the junction and a bus bay provided to expand road space.
The project was estimated to cost Rs.15 crore without land acquisition in 2005. It was among the six flyovers proposed for the city by the previous government. The Chennai Metropolitan Development Authority (CMDA) had expressed concern that several of them could clash with the proposed or future rail networks. With regard to the project at the Porur junction, the concern was that future rail networks along the radial Mount Poonamallee Road might be affected by a flyover at this location, CMDA officials said. The proposal was cleared by the CMDA following a decision that such projects could terminate ahead of the flyover or find other means for crossing the junction.
Flyovers are mandated for junctions where traffic flow crosses 10,000 passenger car units (PCU) - a unit of measure that expresses mixed traffic streams in terms of a hypothetical passenger car stream. The hourly traffic volume at peak hour at Porur junction has crossed 14,000 PCUs, officials said citing a recent traffic study.

Chennai: New traffic regulations will come into effect on Saturday at the Kathipara junction, as per the requirement of the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) to facilitate work on the flyover in the area.
A press release from the Traffic Police said under the new regulations vehicles coming on Mount – Poonamallee Road from Porur bound Guindy should take Butt Road up to the DPO Road and take the right turn at Paul Wells Road.
These vehicles would then cross below an arm of the flyover and move towards Guindy under the pillars 10 and 11 of the flyover.
Vehicles bound for Inner Ring Road should take the free left turn at the junction of IRR and Paul Wells Road.
Two-wheelers coming on Mount – Poonamallee Road towards Guindy may take Paul Wells Road from the junction of McRennett and proceed straight to the IRR without going via Butt Road and DPO Road, the release said.

Not sure if the flyover at Porur will come up. Govt. has grander ideas- You may get an elevated corridor from Porur to Ramapuram ( 4 kms). Tenders for DPR have already been released - http://www.tenders.tn.gov.in/innerpage.asp?choice=tc5&tid=tnu12019&work=1 . There is every likely hood that this corridor is connected to the Chennai By-pass as well.

The work on the construction of a flyover at Usman Road- Doraiswamy Road junction at T Nagar in Chennai would be completed by July this year and be inaugurated by Chief Minister M Karunanidhi.
A statement quoted Mayor M Subramaniam announcing this at a press meet after inspecting the ongoing construction work at the junction.
.
The construction undertaken at a cost of Rs 19.80 crores in September 2007 was nearing completion well before the scheduled time period of 15 months, he said.
The work of constructing 24 pillars for this 781- metre long 11- metre wide flyover had been completed. The pillars would occupy 500 metres of road space and the flyover’s descent would 281 metres long.
It would facilitate two-way flow of traffic and reduce congestion at this junction to a considerable extent. Residents of T Nagar, West Mambalam and Saidapet would be greatly benefitted by this flyover, the Mayor had said.
One more flyover at the Thirumalai Pillai Road-Gopathy Narayana Road junction at a cost of Rs 16.50 crore would be completed by December this year, the Mayor further said.
Corporation Commissioner Rajesh Lakhoni, zonal committee chairman K Elumalai, chief engineer (construction) K Balasundaram, supervising engineer (bridges) M Ramamoorthy were present during the inspection by the Mayor, the statement added.

The NHAI authorities also reviewed the progress of the grade separator work at the Guindy-Kathipara junction, which was being closely monitored by Union Minister for Shipping, Road Transport and Highways T.R. Baalu. While one portion of the grade separator has been thrown open for road-users, the officials feel that the clover-leafed grade separator work would be completed only by August. This means a further postponement of another three months. The officials say that this work has to be carried out without stopping vehicular traffic. Furthermore, there were other contractual problems and an increase in the cost of construction materials.
While the Minister wanted the Guindy-Kathipara grade separator work to be completed fully before June 3, coinciding with the birthday of the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister, the NHAI officials have conveyed their inability to fulfil his request since a major link work of the grade separator is yet to be completed.

Chennai: The Tamil Nadu government will initiate work on 23 railway over bridges (ROBs) at a cost of Rs 500 crore. It will receive part of the funds, about Rs. 250 crore, from the Centre. Three of the ROBs would come up at Ernavur and Basin Bridge in North Chennai, costing about Rs 20 crore each.
The chief minister is expected to open the Kathivakkam ROB in Ennore shortly. The bridge was constructed for Rs 15 crore with the state and the centre sharing the cost. The chief minister will also lay the foundation for a Rs 9 crore bridge in Sadayankuppam under tsunami reconstruction programme. Work on the bridge across the Pulicat lake, a long-felt need of the islanders, has also begun.
The sanctioning of all these bridges was being taken up to improve the connectivity of the residents in North Chennai to reach the city centre without much difficulty, officials said.
Vellore district will also have five ROBs as part of the project. Coimbatore will get three and another two are planned in Tirunelveli.
The state government has been sanctioned Rs 253 crore for road projects covering 1286 km in 23 districts under the Bharat Nirman scheme.
“The proposals have been accepted and the formal communication from the Centre is expected early next week,’’ said a senior official of the state highways department.
The scheme envisages a four-year business plan to improve rural infrastructure. The state government submitted a proposal and the Centre cleared it at a recent meeting of officials from all states, said sources, adding that all the works would be completed before the end of this financial year.
The construction of ROBs in lieu of railway level crossings on government roads are undertaken on priority when train vehicle units (TVU) exceeds one lakh per day. From 1999 to 2005, 47 ROBs were sanctioned, of which only 17 works have been completed.

Around 200 huts hindering the construction of a flyover in Perumbur have been remved by the Chennai Corporation.
Residents of the Rajiv Gandhi Nagar near the Perambur Railway station had been sent notices ordering them to vacate the area as it has been encroached upon by them.
.
However, the residents failed to vacate their huts and the Chennai Corporation headed by the third zone official Rajasekaran razed down the illegal structures.
In the operation, a total of 185 huts were brought down. A strong police force headed by Assistant Commissioner Rajkumar were deployed to prevent any untoward incident.
It is to be recalled that the Corporation was involved in a similar operation in 2005 but due to the inactivity with respect to the flyover construction, the residents had again encroached upon a piece of land.
Now, the construction activities are on in full vigour to ensure early completion.

Chennai: Earthmovers razed down about 10 buildings on Kathivakkam High Road in Korukkupet on Tuesday, as part of the land acquisition for the vehicular subway proposed in the locality.
Encroachments on railway land in Korukkupet were also removed by workers of the Chennai Corporation. The subway is a long-pending demand from local residents living on either side of the railway level-crossing at Thyagappa Street near Korukkupet Railway Station.
Teashops, sweet stalls, a jewellery shop, a printing press and some residential buildings were brought down as part of the land acquisition and encroachment removal drive. Property owners with land documents would be compensated if their land was acquired for the project.
The Corporation has floated tenders for the Korukkupet subway. The civic body had initially envisaged the project to be a package of seven bridges planned in different parts of the city. As the project required heavy land acquisition, it was decided to take it up as a separate one. Work on the other six bridges has been taken up by Subhash Projects and Marketing Limited, an infrastructure development firm.
The total cost of the Korukkupet road under bridge is estimated to be Rs.4.94 crore. The project would be funded by the Corporation and the Railways.
Encroachments in the site for the Perambur flyover project were removed on Monday. Most of them were thatched huts. However, the people who had lived in the huts continued to stay on the site. They said they had lived there for over two decades and were evicted without notice.
The Perambur flyover project is expected to start soon. Infrastructure development firm IVRCL had bid for the project and the Corporation Council recently approved the bid.

Rangarajapuram subway-cum-flyover remains a non-starter, say residents
CHENNAI: A host of issues, including the need to remove encroachments on roads and expedite the Rangarajapuram flyover-cum-subway project, were highlighted by residents of Mambalam and surrounding localities at a meeting here on Sunday.
According to them, unless the agencies concerned initiate action to remove the encroachments and on the project, vehicular movement on the narrow stretches in the area would only become difficult, posing hardships to motorists and risks to pedestrians.
The encroachments, the residents said, were in many forms, including those by pavement dwellers, who despite being alternative land, continue to occupy the road. Likewise, places of worship on the pavements also contributed to the encroachments.
Haphazard parking of vehicles and an increase in the number of commercial establishments compounds the problems, said speakers at the meeting organised by the Mambalam Exnora Innovators Club.
A resident of Rukmani Street said the growth in the commercial establishments in the residential areas had resulted in an increase in the vehicle movement and unauthorised parking of vehicles in front of the houses.
Exnora International secretary R. Govindaraj said the Rangarajapuram subway-cum-flyover, which was announced even before the recently commissioned North Usman Road-Mahalingapuram flyover, remained a non-starter.
He wanted encroachments on the roads leading to the proposed project site near the Rangarajapuram railway level-crossing to be removed.
Otherwise, after implementation, the Rangarajapuram subway and flyover would go the Madley Road subway way, which remains under-utilised because of a place of worship in the middle of Elliamman Koil Street. It has led to a situation where Metropolitan Transport Corporation could not operate buses through the narrow road.
Mambalam Exnora Innovators Club secretary V. Murali said people from Nesapakkam, K.K.Nagar, West Saidapet and West Mambalam bound for Anna Salai, who now use the heavily congested the Duraiswamy subway, could be diverted to Madley Subway if the authorities relocated the place of worship.
The residents complained that pavement dwellers occupied a substantial portion of the Arya Gowda Road.

Until April this year, Katipara Junction could remind people only of its heavy traffic congestion problems, vehicles in a bee line and irksome honking sound. Now ask people they flaunt about their new flyover and praise it so much for making their commutation so easy than ever before. If this is the accolade received for inaugurating just one wing of the gigantic flyover, then Chennai public might run out of words to eulogize their developing city.
Cribbing about something is quite common among citizens, but let's do the flashback round now! When the flyover was under construction it was more like an enemy for the public. Cursing the delay in constructing, claiming this reason for sluggish traffic movement and what not. But now this foe has turned a friend.
The Katipara flyover has a three lane traffic movement slot and commuting to airport will be in a matter of few minutes. The track opened for public is the stretch connecting Tambaram to Koyambedu. Therefore airport frequenter regard this a boon!.
Few days ago a forwarded mail did rounds across the city; the subject of the mail was pictures of future Chennai. Amazing were those shots which made Chennai look like a foreign shooting destination. A bird's eye view of the various flyovers under construction! Padi, Airport, Tambaram and the list accommodates quite a few traffic heavy places will be blessed by flyovers in few more years to come. When all these flyovers would be open for public, people will still crib about not knowing which track leads where!
"This is something like a boon to me. I take this road regularly to reach koyambedu for my job. Before I used to pray that the traffic congestion should be less, now this worry no more finds a place in my priority list. The movement of vehicles is so smooth" says a satisfied commuter.
Now using roadways as a means of transportation will not be a nightmare. Estimating travel time by accommodating the slothful traffic is no more required. Take a trip via the one winged flyover of the Katipara junction to understand how easy it is. Using words like 'zing' and 'swung' like kids is what can be written about this much awaited flyover.

Why First Impression Counts
source: http://www.chennaionline.com/cityfeature/Neighborhood/May08/05story06.aspx
GST road looks quite different for a few meters stretching from Kamaraj Domestic airport and Anna International Airport to close to Guindy. The first impression is perhaps the best impression; when the first impression of Chennai city is concerned, it opens up with an under developed image, but grows to provide this foreign locale picture. Every visitor to the city will get the feel of the urge of development the city nurtures. The most important road stretch of any city is the road from the airport which leads to the city. Every visitor with minimal knowledge about the city or on a debut visit to the place frames his opinion on the development of the city based on this road. Let's feel proud that the city has maintained a spic and span environment which will definitely have a wide impact on the image in the minds of the visitors.
Stepping out of the airport one might get a disturbed image, the fly-over which is under construction and tea hawkers who have set up their stall below the shade of the bridge. But that would account for the time which is required to get settled in the taxis. Slowly after few seconds when the car heads somewhere out of the fly over mess is when the stressed flyer pulls down the window to get a glimpse of the city.
With brilliantly constructed road dividers and planted advertising boards the city stands the best with its well maintained roads Is it Chennai one might ask, for seeing the roads sans pot holes? Alas, what am I seeing, workers mending in the grass grown in the small area inside the road divider in the hot sun? Towards your left, you will see this different kind of advertising boards, not hoardings but a flash finish panel with wonderful caption in the ads. The best part is, these ad boxes glow in the night!
The maintenance work would be slightly simpler when the area near Pazhavanthangal, Cement road is concerned. Trident and Radisson hotels take due care to mow the grass surrounding their compound wall. Officers training academy on the left side keeps one guessing what lies beyond?
Flyovers in the areas around the airport are close to completion, once all the flyovers are inaugurated, the look of Chennai is definitely due a boost. Even those people who fled out of the city for varied reasons, on returning will get mesmerized by the way Chennai has adorned the new-fangled beautification of infrastructure. The flip side or rather one kind suggestion is , one should realize that the first impression will remain to be the best if the rest of the city could also remotely associated with this spic and span methodology.

Flyover incomplete even after 8 yrs
Lack Of Coordination Hampers Construction Of Maduvankarai Bridge
Julie Mariappan | TNN
Chennai: The Chennai municipal corporation once completed a flyover in the heart of the city in hardly nine months. Not far off the city limits, another government agency is groping in the dark, unable to complete a rail-over-bridge (ROB) eight years after its commencement.
The department is the State Highways and the project is the Maduvankarai ROB. After completion, it will not only connect Chakrapani Street and MKN Road off Guindy Railway Station, but will also link Chennai and Kancheepuram districts. Conceived in 2000, at an estimated cost of Rs 26 crore, it is expected to do away with the existing railway crossing at Maduvankarai.
For the residents of Adambakkam and West Velachery, these eight years have meant untold hardship. Expected to facilitate thousands of motorists from the southern suburbs, the project has actually impeded development.
“We see nothing but columns year after year, while completion of the project is still not in sight. The roads are in bad shape and traffic is thrown out of gear during peak hours. Why should the authorities take up a project before completing all relevant requirements?” asks S Srinivasan, a resident of Adambakkam.
The Maduvankarai ROB is a telling example of how lack of coordination can affect development works. Initially, an investigation was done by both highways and southern railways, but the latter built only deck slabs and columns over the railway tracks in early 2000, leaving the approach portion to the highways department.
“But the highways could settle on a tender for the project only in 2004, after eight calls,” sources told The Times of India. The selected contractor was given 18 months’ time, but even after the project was extended by six months, he could not carry out the task as the land needed for the project was not acquired till then. Meanwhile, the cost of construction materials escalated.
The revenue staff had a tough time searching for the documents of the lands and encroachments. It took almost two years to complete the job. Other agencies such as TNEB, Metro-water, Chennai Corporation and transport departments are not lending support, it is alleged.
Eight cable lines distributing power to Raj Bhavan and Velachery and Metrowater’s main sewer lines crisscross the bridge alignment.
“But the agencies concerned are not cooperating in effecting diversion of lines. Even buses cannot be diverted despite efforts by the highways,” sources told TOI.
It was only in mid-April that the highways asked the transport department to divert MTC services through Pilliar Koil Street and Vandikaran Street. But the Chennai corporation took up upgradation work in the same Pilliar Koil Street, leaving the MTC to operate via Chakrapani Street, where the bridge work is on.
A second contractor picked by the highways department, will have to build ten columns to complete the bridge.

TechCity June 5th, 2008, 06:55 AM Pattabiram road overbridge work delay increases travel time to Poonamallee
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The project launched in 2005; it’s a year now since the work was suspended
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

COSTLY DELAY: The unfinished road overbridge in Pattabiram spells more travel time and more spending on fuel for motorists.
CHENNAI: Delay in completion of a road overbridge in Pattabiram, which on commissioning promises to considerably reduce travel time to Poonamallee, is forcing the residents to take a detour of around 10 km via Avadi.
Residents say it has been over a year now since work on the project was suspended. The unfinished portion of the road over bridge at the South Bazaar side is also fast becoming a garbage dump and vehicle parking lot. The delay has also restricted the vehicle movement on the stretch.
The ROB project, to connect Pattabiram and Poonamallee via Thandurai, is a much awaited facility for which residents waged a battle for two decades. Work on the project was launched in 2005 by the State Highways Department and Southern Railway. The bridge would connect around 15 villages near Thandurai, including Anaikattucheri, Sorancheri and Paarivakkam, to Poonamallee.
According to the residents, vehicles now take the roads, which are in bad shape, in Paarivakkam or the heavily congested Chennai Tiruvallur High Road to reach Poonamallee.
Sekar, a resident of Anaikattucheri, said that during rush hour in the morning it is a long wait for motorists at the level-crossing near the Pattabiram Railway Station. The gate remains open for hardly 10 minutes. The alternative route is circuitous. Tamil Nadu Progressive Consumer Centre vice-president T. Sadagopan said the ROB, across South Bazaar and CTH Road (NH 205), would cut the detour to Poonamallee by several km. The Rs.14-crore project was scheduled for completion in September 2006, he added.
K.B.Haridass of South Bazaar said Station Road, running parallel to the Pattabiram Railway Station, the alternative route, was badly damaged and unmotorable.
General secretary of the Pattabiram Traders’ Welfare Association N.Swaminathan said the land acquisition should be carried out in such a way that the small traders in the area were not affected.
State Highways officials said their portion of work had been completed except for service lane provision. They attributed the suspension of work to delay in land acquisition.
The Revenue Department has served notices on about 80 property owners so far. Once the land was acquired, the service lanes project would resume. The Highways Department also proposes to call for re-tender to carry out the balance work, an official said. There was also a proposal to build staircases on both South Bazaar and CTH Road sides of the bridge for the benefit of pedestrians, he added.
An official of Southern Railway said that about 75 per cent of the Railway portion taken up at the cost of Rs.4.5 crore has been completed so far. The project schedule has been affected by the escalating cost of building materials, but now the work is being resumed.

Rasnaboy June 12th, 2008, 07:26 AM Work on Alandur elevated bridge proceeding at a snail’s pace
Kannal Achuthan
Two-wheeler traffic, movement of people and cattle pose problems
CHENNAI: Work has started on the elevated bridge to replace the Alandur causeway but it is proceeding slowly owing to frequent two-wheeler traffic and movement of people and cattle along the stretch.
The existing causeway is a low-level bridge across a stretch of the Adyar river near the Guindy Industrial Estate. The causeway gets flooded during heavy rain posing a risk to motorists and pedestrians. Estimates for an elevated bridge were drawn up as early as 1999. The private firm that bagged the tender in 2006 quoted Rs.7.71 crore. But the bid was turned down as the amount was 37 per cent higher than the official estimate then.
New tenders were floated and the work was commissioned to infrastructure development firm Subhash Projects and Marketing Limited (SPML), which made the lowest bid for the project. Mayor M. Subramanian launched the work to construct a higher bridge on March 8. The elevated causeway will cost Rs.8.16 crore. Representatives of the firm said that the digging required for the project has commenced.
The causeway connects Anna Salai to Guindy Industrial Estate through the Alandur Road. The stretch is closed to heavy vehicles. Two-wheeler drivers have a point when they demand that they be allowed to continue using the causeway. For those coming into Guindy Industrial Estate from Saidapet, blocking the causeway will mean that they have to ride across Saidapet and Guindy and take the U-turn at the Kathipara Junction. This would mean an additional travel time of 30 to 45 minutes as the stretch is very congested. They suggest that U-turn be made possible before the Kathipara junction. Residents of Guindy Industrial Estate also continue to use the causeway to go to West Saidapet.
The elevated bridge is scheduled to be completed by December next year. It would be 420 metres long and 12.5 m wide with a carriageway having a width of 7.5 m and footpaths with a width of 2.5 m on either side.

Chennai: With the Chennai Corporation and Metrowater gearing up for preliminary works ahead of the construction of a flyover at the junction of Pasumpon Muthuramalingam Salai (Chamiers Road) and Turnbulls Road, it promises to be utterly chaotic for vehicular traffic.
Corporation officials began work on the initial load test by constructing a test pile at a playground near Turnbulls Road recently. About 550 tonnes of cement blocks will be used on the test pile during the coming week. They will remain in place till June 28, to test the capacity of the test pile. After the initial test, officials will hold another pile test at the exact alignment portion using 330 tonnes of cement blocks, sources said.
The flyover, to be built at an estimated cost of Rs 14 crore, was originally designed on Pasumpon Muthuramalingam Salai. The design was changed at the fag end of last year, owing to pressure from “residents” who said the flyover would serve no purpose if the corporation went ahead with the proposed alignment. The traffic department and Anna university also gave the go-ahead for the present design, citing the increase in traffic along the route in recent years following the realestate boom in the suburbs.
The corporation has retained the identified contractor — Gammon India — to change the design. The project got delayed after Metrowater cancelled the selected contractor for diversion and relaying of water and sewer mains on Pasumpon Muthuramalingam Salai. “When bidders were called for the new designs, the response was not so pleasing. So we had to split tenders into two components — labour and civil works — and finally zeroed in on a contractor,” says a Metrowater official.
According to sources, Metrowater officials are holding negotiations with the selected tenderer and the latter is expected to begin civil work in a fortnight. It is said that the agency had spent Rs 6.36 lakh for the preparatory works towards the previous design. Estimates were revised to Rs 1.8 crore for diversion and relaying of sewer and water lines on Cenotaph Road and Turnbulls Road — an addition of Rs 1 crore from the previous estimate.
“We have remitted all the amount to the water board. We want them to begin the work at the earliest, so that we can commence our pile foundation. If they delay it further, we will begin the work simultaneously with their diversion. There is no point delaying,” says a senior civic official. The local body needs to acquire 19,200 sq ft of land on Cenotaph Road and the process of acquisition is still on paper between Revenue and Municipal Administration, sources said.
When contacted, additional commissioner (traffic) Sunil Kumar said his department would definitely go in for a diversion of traffic at the site.
“Diversion is required at this site. But none of the agencies approached us for diversion as yet. If they come with a plan, we will look into the map and find out alternative routes and change the effect at once,” he added.
WAITING TO FLY
Corporation will complete initial load testing for the flyover by June 28
The total project cost is expected to be Rs 14 crore
Traffic will be diverted once the agencies concerned approach the traffic department
Metrowater will begin diversion and relaying of sewer lines in a fortnight

Interestingly, it seems, however, that there is no provision for U-turn at the junction for vehicles coming from airport (since there is a divider shown in the diagram) whereas the same may be available for vehicles from the other three directions. If this is the case, will not other junctions, such as Halda and Little Mount on the GST road be clogged by vehicles from Airport side seeking a U-turn?

Rasnaboy June 26th, 2008, 04:13 AM The redesigned flyover at Cenotaph Road-Turnbulls Road junction will cost Rs.19.93 crore
Chennai: The Chennai Corporation will have to spend Rs.9.70 crore on land acquisition alone to pave way for the redesigned flyover at the junction of Pasumpon Muthuramalingam Salai (Chamiers Road) – Turnbulls Road.
The alignment of the flyover has been turned by 90 degrees and the flyover will come up on the Cenotaph Road-Turnbulls Road. According to Corporation officials, the Revenue Department has begun the land acquisition process but it is likely to get delayed as the area makes for prime real estate. The flyover was earlier proposed along the Pasumpon Muthuramalingam Salai-Turnbulls Road but had to be redesigned after appeals from local residents. Anna University was commissioned to study the new proposal for its feasibility. The report was favourable towards the redesign.
According to the report, traffic is likely to increase at the junction as the Kotturpuram Road has become busier with the rapid development of the IT highway.
Project developer
The revised estimate (inclusive of land acquisition and transfer of service lines) for the redesigned flyover is Rs.19.93 crore. Earlier, the project estimate was Rs.12.5 crore. The length of the flyover has been reduced from 640 metres to 480 metres and the width would be seven metres. About 18,200 square feet would have to be acquired.
Gammon India, which had won the contract for the flyover even before the redesign, will execute the project. The work value of the project was originally Rs.9.79 crore but will come down to Rs.7 crore because of the flyover’s reduced length. But rather than reducing the Corporation’s expenditure, the new design would only boost the expenses because of the land acquisition involved.
The estimates have been approved by the Corporation Council and would be sent to the State government for its nod.

Heard there are still a few buildings yet to be demolished to give way to the project. Donno how far it is true...

Really? The article in dinamani (Posted in this thread in the previous page) says that it will be completed in two months.
Btw, is the roundabout interchange going to consist of three levels, as shown in http://www.cbrd.co.uk/reference/interchanges/3round.shtml, or just two levels? If it is going to be just two, they might have as well built a simple flyover for one of the two through traffic flows, and have the roundabout at-grade.

The design in the link does have three levels but in the design of the padi flyover the round-about ha been merged with the second leel and the other through fare lies in the ground level. This has been planned so that traffic in one road use the flyover only while the traffic in the criss-crossing road uses the flyover for straight route and uses the ground level for taking turns.

In that case, elevating the roundabout hardly makes sense, and they could have as well gone for just elevating the thoroughfare portion, as I had previously pointed out.
krishnancv July 1st, 2008, 10:19 AM yes recently i got to read a book on road transportation standards in which the merits and demerits of different kinds of flyovers and interchanges were discussed in brief. It says having a rotary kind of interchange is useful in case of a 'T'-junction but completely loses its advantage when used in a 4-road junction likke the one at padi. No doubt MIT bridge at chrompet is a big success and similar model is being adopted at various places along the GST road.
I also saw that the problem of weaving in case of a clover-leaf interchange can be over come at the ground level with slight modifications as has been adopted partially in the costruction of the kathipara flyover. In this case, aas heavy traffic is expected along the Airport guindy alignment the approaaching traffic from porur jn has goes underneath the arm connecting the airport with guindy so that those proceeding towards airport can take the other without being caught under heavy traffic from the airport side.
A semi clover leaf interchange with two leaf arms and two under passes apart from main arm is the best one that can solve the traffic conjestion at a 4 road jn. A similar design has been adopted by the NHAI for the Koyembedu interchange but it has three arms and one underpass apart from the main arm.
Indian Sun July 1st, 2008, 03:04 PM i saw usman rd u/c flyover today....it should be completed soon much of the works are done....

Proposal to widen the ROB is there: official

WAITING FOR FACELIFT: Motorists have a tough task negotiating the narrow Perambur Loco Works ROB, particularly during rush hour.
CHENNAI: The Perambur Loco Works road overbridge (ROB), a vital link between areas in north Chennai and Ayanavaram used by hundreds of vehicles every day, is in dire need of attention.
Besides railway employees working in the area and north Chennai residents, motorists from Villivakkam and Kolathur have started using the ROB following closure of level-crossing No.2 near the Villivakkam Railway Station. The level-crossing has been closed to facilitate work on a road underbridge project there.
R.Murali, who regularly uses the ROB, said traffic chaos on the facility had become a daily ordeal, particularly during rush hour as vehicles in both directions vie for space on the narrow bridge.
The lack of streetlights on the pot-holed stretch also compounds the problem, said V. Madhavan, a resident of Rajaji Nagar, Villivakkam. He started using the ROB to avoid delay in waiting for the level-crossing gate No. 1, as an alternative to No.2, to open. But, it has become more of an arduous task to commute on the bridge owing to the damaged and narrow stretch.
Residents want the authorities to either renovate or widen the Perambur Loco Works ROB to cope with the increasing traffic.
G. Lakshman, treasurer of Southern Railway Mazdoor Union, said residents of several areas in north Chennai such as Sembium, Vysarpadi and Thiru.Vi.Ka. Nagar use the ROB daily.
The significance of the bridge is more felt during rainy season as the other railway stations on the stretch had road underbridges, which get heavily inundated, he said. Though a proposal to strengthen the ROB was made two years ago, there has been little movement in that direction, he added.
Responding to the residents’ demand, a Southern Railway official said there was a proposal to widen the ROB near Perambur Loco Works Railway Station. The project would be taken up in association with the Chennai Corporation and the tender floated in a few months.

Rasnaboy July 7th, 2008, 04:28 AM Chennai: Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi will inaugurate the flyover on Usman Road in T. Nagar next month.
Local Administration Minister M.K. Stalin made the announcement after inspecting the final stages of the construction of the flyover on Sunday.
He said the flyover, costing Rs. 19.8 crore, would ease traffic congestion at the busy Panagal Park junction and also along Usman Road, Venkatnarayana Road and Thyagaraya Road. Traffic would be allowed both ways.
Mr. Stalin said the flyover coming up on Thirumalai Road–G.N. Chetty Road junction would be inaugurated in December. the elevated bridge to replace the Alandur causeway and the vehicular subway near Stanley Government Hospital would be completed in March, while the Rangarajapuram road overbridge would be finished in September. The Perambur flyover was expected to be completed in December. Several bridge or subway projects, including the Saidapet Jones Road subway were in different stages of progress.

i don't think so. by sep they are probably referring to 2009.
i am impressed at the pace at which the flyovers are being constructed and how the traffic was managed during the construction period of ones at kodambakkam-n.usman road and other being constructed at panagal park. these were the tough ones. but i wonder what is taking time at gn chetty road - this one is simpler.

I doubt the rangarajapuram road is a flyover. It looks more like a subway. Sep 2009 is only possible if the dispute betn. railways and corp. is sorted out.

vijayvmail July 9th, 2008, 04:55 PM Thanks for the photo of the rangarajapuram subway
This looks like the typical "abandoned" subway construction site that we see so often in our cities.
I'm not sure how they are going to acquire land and complete this. Otherwise, this might be like this for decades. People can just forget that such a route existed at all.
It is very sad, there are no easy route to cross the railway line. Right from Nungambakkam to Tambaram, all we have are narrow subways / flyovers with even narrower approach roads. The kodambakkam bridge and the Nelson manickam road subway are slightly better, but are overcrowded.
Rather than trying to squeeze in subways / flyovers in the existing railway gates, should we be trying to go in for something more radical? - say for example, elevate extended portions of the railway line and have broad roads underneath, or have broad roads underground below the railway lines with exits on both sides ...
I know these are too far fetched for the kind of organization we have - Land disputes between corporation and railways, congestion on either side of the tracks etc. But I do wish for a really radical change rather than trying to squeeze in small structure in the existing congested infrastructures.

Excellent idea.
Eventhough they have maga shops, they are not even thinking about providing some empty space, where customer can atleast sit.
Nonody is planning for providing parking space.
In future,Govt has to insist them to provide a empty space and parking space.
Ranganathan street is exploited more by the shops. DLF mall Construction in egmore was stalled due to the HC order for the same reason. But Govt is not taking any action for Ranganathan street.
It is even more dangerous for the people if some disaster happens. In that dangerous situation, people can not even escape.

There are lots of railway crossings along this line. I do not deny that. But except 3-4 places such as guindy mount road, kodambakkam flyover and a couple of subways, the rest are all too narrow and congested.
The jones road subway leads directly into Saidapet market, madley road subway has a rickety road from T.nagar and a very very narrow lane leading towards Wast mamabalam and ashok nagar, The pazhavanthangal subway likewise is also so narrow and leads to a small road on the nanganallur side. Doraisamy road subway is literally seeing 500% utilization. The upcoming rangarajapuram also seems narrow.
This is what I meant. Majority of crossing are so narrow. Both sides of the railway lines have been so heavily built up with very less scope for expansion and widening.
barrykul July 10th, 2008, 06:37 PM One of the things that really shows up bad on photos and in actuality, is the sidewalk sand piles. Every major road in India has that sand pile to the sides and no effort is made to clean them out. I see it everywhere on NH roads, city roads. Sometimes I see crews mostly women folks with small implements and broom trying valiantly to clean out the mess. What is needed are dedicated cleaning trucks with brushes attached on the underside to clear out the sand piles. Another thing amiss are paint coats for the bare exposed concrete slabs.
Going that last extra mile in finish is what makes a neat tidy appearance. I hope the authorities take note and forthwith implement these suggestions.
Rasnaboy July 10th, 2008, 06:52 PM ^^You are right Barrykul! The cases you are talking about are the roads with proper pavements (these are the neatest of our roads, and mostly you can see such roads in and around the central business district). But there are several roads (even highways and arterial roads in some places) that lack such pavements where the edge of the road abruptly merges with the sand and you have bare earth exposed directly. In rainy seasons, the scene is particularly unpicturesque.

CHENNAI: Work on the ROB (road overbridge) across the railway level crossing in Kathivakkam, in Tiruvottiyur Municipality, has been completed and the facility awaits inauguration.
Sand bags have been stacked at the entry points of the ROB, as a measure to prevent vehicles from using the facility until its opening. The ROB is 1,283 metres long and provides access from three sides - Ennore (585 mts), Ennore Express Highway (344 mts) and Tiruvottiyur (354 mts).
It is the longest ROB over a railway level crossing in Chennai. Work on the ROB, taken up as part of railway’s programme to eliminate the use of the railway level crossings in 2000–2001, commenced in 2005 and was completed in about 24 months .
According to State Highway department officials, the railways had a portion of work to be completed in the 50-span bridge and it was completed in April 2008. The work was given administrative sanction through a G.O of Highways Department in October 2000 and the funds were to be shared. The bridge will be able to be take vehicles carrying up to 50 tonnes. A total of 1,260 tonnes of steel bars and 5,700 tonnes of cement have been used in the construction of the bridge.
Residents living alongside the railway track and in between the Kathivakkam High Road and Ennore Express Highway have to take long trips through Ulaganathapuram. V. Shanmugam of Annai Sivagami Nagar said the bridge could help save a lot of time and fuel.
Department officials confirmed that work on the ROB had been completed some weeks ago. It would be opened for public traffic in a fortnight, they added.

I know there are a lot more subways on the beach-tambaram line.the point i tried to make was the subways betn. st.thomas mount-palavanthangal. There is more subways than needed between this route, especially the one in thillai ganga nagar where a lot of ancestral houses were displaced to build the subway which was totally unnecessary. Palavanthangal even though narrow is still under utilised.
But both palavanthangal and st thomas mount subways are a blessing compared to the wait by buses in these routes for railway gates to open in the 80s and 90s and buses using the very narrow route through adambakkam to go thro' race course to hit mount road.

AP flyover should be over is next 4 months, otherwise the traffic on Guduvancherry-Vandalur-Byepass-GST Tambaram-AP Flyover-Kathipara-IRR-CMBT will be a big headache for the city.

New facility: Commuters using the pedestrian subway at the Pazhavanthangal Railway Station on Wednesday.
CHENNAI: A pedestrian subway at the Pazhavanthangal Railway Station was inaugurated on Wednesday by Labour Minister T.M. Anbarasan.
The M.K.N. Road railway overbridge and the Kathipara grade separator would be completed shortly and thrown open to the public, he said. The subway, constructed from the Constituency Development Fund of South Chennai Member of Parliament and Union Minister for Shipping, Road Transport and Highways T.R. Baalu, has been established at the cost of Rs.10.37 lakh.
The subway, which was a long-felt need of the commuters, links the Pazhavanthangal station to the Railway Station Road via the Pazhavanthangal subway. The subway would provide a convenient alternative to the foot-over-bridge that the commuters used to reach the station.
Alandur Municipal Chairman R.S. Bharathi said the commuters of Nanganallur and Pazhavanthangal have been highlighting the need for the subway as they found it difficult to access the railway station through the foot-over-bridge.

barrykul July 18th, 2008, 02:27 AM ^^ Just how many lanes does the flyover support. Seems to be like 2 or 3. Very slow progress for a project of this size. This has been going on for years.

Indian Sun July 23rd, 2008, 06:45 AM the flyover is 2 laned right?
Rasnaboy July 23rd, 2008, 03:12 PM ^^Yes! It's 11-metre wide and will allow traffic movement in both directions.
vijayvmail July 23rd, 2008, 04:35 PM ^^Yes! It's 11-metre wide and will allow traffic movement in both directions.
Doesn't it look so narrow? It looks like it can accomodate only 2 vehicles side by side. Even that I don't know how it'll be with buses.
Will this be enough for the traffic that we see there?
Rasnaboy July 23rd, 2008, 04:56 PM ^^Only to some extent. But not as one might expect. Especially when considering the one-more-bottleneck that it leads to — the T.Nagar Bus Terminus.:ohno:
sriforum July 23rd, 2008, 10:06 PM ^^ Seems like a project of Southern Railways waiting for laying the tracks :ohno:
barrykul July 24th, 2008, 01:19 AM The above flyover is a disgrace, sorry to say. Absolutely, frking brain dead. The entire area around Panagal Park required leadership to think about creating a super big mall and house the various saree/jewelery/food/misc stores within. The rebuilt mall would come up after demolishing the old buildings on the street and broadening the roads for traffic. Businesses would have been open to the idea given a transition plan into the mall. Very myopic. I hope one day such a plan is embarked upon and Chennai city is improved with modern facilities similar to Bluru.
Instead they came up with a pathetic 2 lane road snaking through congested buildings on either side. Why? 2 lanes is hardly adequate, it would have been better to build a double decker, with traffic one way on each deck. Goodness grief, a planning dept with little imagination.

Guys!
I dont think that this flyover built and meant for two way traffic. as u said, this is very narrow.
It might be for ONE way traffice.
1. We all know that and as usual, Vechiles coming from T Nagar bus stand will go on the fly over to reach Panagal Park.
2. Secondly, Vechiles r coming coming from Kodambak and other T Nagar areas will make all the way around to the Panagal Park and go on Venkat narayana road, take usual narrow road and come to T Nagar Bus stand.
The same things we saw, before this fly over construction, and I believe it will repeat again.
Just imagine guys, If kodambakkam vechiles directly taking this fly over to come to T Nagar BS.. how it would be?.. It will be another mess on the North corner of the panagal park.
The reason for fly over would be :
Not for 2 way traffic, to avoid people congestion on the T Nagar shopping road and vechiles coming from Rangarajapuram sub way cornor in front of the Pothy's. So that people can use the road without any traffic disturbance and flow freely. same time, vechiles movement on the road will also be very smooth hereafter.. To avoid people blocking the traffic.
Let us wait and watch till the opening day..how is going to be?..
Arul Murugan July 24th, 2008, 06:31 AM  even then we can lay only single track.

Yes they could have planned in another way. Double decker elevated corridor around Pangal park and the roads approaching it. Vehicles should be completely planned in ground level roads and it should be only for people for shopping!
May be this will be the starting, after 25 years, we may see one more flyover over this one.
Indian Sun July 24th, 2008, 07:17 AM maybe they will see sense and implement barrykul's idea....
Tamizhan July 24th, 2008, 08:52 AM I think lot of you here is over-reacting to the picture of the Usman Road - Duraisamy flyover. You have to look at the picture in a relative scale.
If you noticed in some of the early posts in this forum on North Usman Road - Mahalingapuram flyover pictures, you could see it looks very narrow. As if its a foot bridge. But then if you look at the cars below the flyover (in the same picture) you could see that they are small too. That flyover is about 8 meters width and its 2-way too.
If this one is 11 meters width (as mentioned above), then I would say its a wide flyover compared to others.
Also here are some facts:
Average width of 2-lane Indian roads is 5.5 to 8.8 meters.
Average width of luxury cars is <80 inches (~2 meters).
(since most in chennai drive santro like car and now even maybe nano, I think it will be about 1.2 meters in width).
Average width of bus is <110 inches (~2.8 meters).
Although I agree with the idea about 2 level flyovers and that they should build wider roads, I think this particular flyover is far better than the other mini-flyovers we have seen in the city.
Madras_Fan July 24th, 2008, 05:00 PM As all the traffic from nandanam/ mount road, GN Chetty Road and panagal park comes to the Pothys junction and then take 3 directions one towards T Nagar Bustand and another for duraiswamy subway and another to North Usman road. By this flyover traffic exclusively for usman road the junction will free the traffic on one road in both directions and will have more free time for pedestrains. Other point is Unnecessary detours of 47 series buses to touch North usman road via Venkatanarayana road can be avoided and there by may have some impact on Chamiers Road/ Anna Salai choked signal.
The width of the flyover is very much OK considering the space crunch around and considering foot over bridge like Mini flyover at royappettah etc

Good thought Barrykul. Well this is Chennai we are talking about. T-Nagar shopping area developed due to competition of the 2 big parties. There is no way they are going to come into an agreement and setup the mega mall you are talking about. If this would happen, then by that time we will have freeways etc.
Its all political and that fight is never going to end! Going with the times, this flyover avoids a couple stagnant signals--good enuf!
Just inquisitive: Can you explain this?

Where does this flyover touch the ground at the T.nagar bus stand side? Does it go beyond the bus stand ?
Vehicles coming from Pondy bazaar or G.N.chetty road may not be able to take this flyover to T.nagar bus stand. They might have to take one of the smaller roads to North usman road and then take this flyover.

கிளம்பிட்டாய்ஙகய்யா! கிளம்பிட்டாய்ஙக!!:bash::bash:
Madras_Fan July 24th, 2008, 11:05 PM It does not go beyond T Nagar bus stand. It will end approximately in middle of pothys and Bus stand. The existing one way from Pothys To T Nagar(Reverse direction drive is not possible now) may become 2 ways and will ensure smooth flow of traffic. All Bus traffic from T Nagar bustand to N Usman road is taking 2-3 Kms detour (to go via Venkatanarayana road, Panagal park, N Usman) just needs to just cross for 0.5 kms. This will lead to decrease in traffic at Panagal park roundana(traffic from nandanam side) as well as couple of other signals in which detour is happening. Also it may relieve Nandanam Signal(Anna Salai/ Chamiers road cramped intersection) to some extent
This flyover will be mainly for Usman road connecting south and northern part which indirectly removes lot of hurdles. Most of the times in the day (Atleast 50% of time in evenings)traffic is stopped at pothys junction to just enable pedestrains cross over. Also previously most of the street hawkers occupy both sides of the S Usman road. Now they cant do as traffic will be there below the flyover too there by making it impossible for hawkers atleast in South usman road. As GN Chetty/Tirumalai pillai Jn flyover is also progressing I am sure the woes will ease but again it may slightly choke Eldams road/Anna Salai junction. Another flyover there could be taken up after metro alignment is freezed.
The plan could have been better than this but at the same time its not as worse as other criticize. It will definitely bring down traffic jams in T Nagar vicinity but again MAY NOT during Diwali times. Even similar small flyover built at kodambakkam had done wonders and previously it will take 20-25 minutes in the morning to cross kodambakkam flyover(From meenakshi college to periyar nagar) and it had come down to 10 minutes NOW. A One way restriction (T Nagar to Mahalingapuram not possible Earlier) had gone too. The actual point is they had used the road space which persons used to park in front of shops. Similarly they will utilize the space in T Nagar which was used by street hawkers all now. Counter arguments most welcome

Chennai city is improved with modern facilities similar to Bluru.
Maybe OT, however, Bluru is undergoing a renaissance with old buildings demolished and shiny new malls, mini-malls appearing rapidly. Many Old neighborhoods are today unrecognizable from the old days. Also the number of new big buildings due to IT companies is staggering in scope compared to Chennai. They are all modern sometimes beating their counterparts elsewhere in the world. We see some activity in Chennai along the IT corridor, though the pace is not as great as Bluru. Actually the Chennai city center may move towards the newer areas Adyar and beyond. The old areas of Chennai require a building frenzy, demolishing the old and making way for the new, but there is too much resistance in these neighborhoods. Anyways, this is a personal opinion, better to check things out on your own and form your own opinion!

Even I think that the CBD of chennai, the stretch between central and Gemini is stagnating. There has been no major developmant in that stretch and most bulidings look old and dirty. For any Chennaite, Mount road would be the most vivid memory of the city. I wish that mount road could become like Nariman point, Mumbai(in terms of skyscrapers).

--Sorry for the off-topic. If the mods want to move this elsewhere, kindly let me know.--
The old areas of Chennai are just that: old. They need preservation, not demolition. Of course, congestion and traffic need to be handled better. But, just because Bangalore turns back on its garden city image and builds skyscrapers, Chennai need not do it. Let us show some sense of history and heritage and preserve it; the future generations will surely appreciate it. We Indians have too much history, hence we take it for granted and not preserve it.
Also, I cannot really understand the need for skyscrapers all over Chennai. Tall buildings are being built at a few places (that can support them) and we can take it from there. In fact, MMDA, now CMDA did a good thing by enforcing FSI regulations in the city with respect to building heights and street widths. Just imagine the congestion in the narrow old city roads (George Town, T Nagar, Purasawalkam, etc.) if we built skyscrapers there! New York, for instance, is able to support its skyscrapers due to an efficient underground transit system, which we do not have. Plus, all American cities suffer from high crime rates in the nights in their CBD. The reason? The CBD has only businesses and no residential areas nearby, hence there is no soul around in the night. Compare with Chennai: without zone planning and enforcement, we have Ispahani, Taj Corommandel and some residential buildings on the same road. This certainly has a salutary effect on crime. I definitely feel more safe in Chennai in the nights than any American city with their flashy police patrol cars and fancy skyscrapers.
Madras is beautiful as it is; let us work towards keeping it so. We just need better traffic management and long term planning (sigh!) and have taller buildings in the areas that can actually support it.
Rasnaboy July 25th, 2008, 05:38 PM ^^Very good and valid points dear Arshyam! That said Chennai can have skyscrapers as and when it really needs them, it's good that the city has a good conservative attitude similar to London and Paris when it comes to historical structures. But at the same time, the city should also concentrate on strengthening its infrastructure base such as wide roads, flyovers, effecient rapid transit system, good water management and drainage systems (including beautiful waterways) as a right step towards becoming a global city.
We have lot more to discuss about this, and I think "Chennai discussions II" and "Chennai in 10 years" would be the right threads for this. Just my two cents...:)
barrykul July 25th, 2008, 05:41 PM The old areas of Chennai are just that: old. They need preservation, not demolition.

barrykul,
It is really unfortunate that some folks in this forum think that having dilapidated
buildings (which show chennai in poor light) is preserving history. To them, construting skyscrapers and malls mean losing their tradition and values.
These people think Chennai in its current state is better place to live
You can hardly find such folks in other state/city threads. Now it should be very clear why people love to call chennai the most conservative city, that will resist any development.

you guys make no sense. first of all, chennai is a more modern city than delhi or mumbai. one recent post mentioned nariman point has skyscrapers. i wonder that person ever been to nariman point. nariman point is charming because it has all those old buildings mostly 6 floors high. bangalore may have more modern buildings thanks to IT but these are primarily in the outskirts. bangalore within outer ring road is drab. and finally, most of these buildings along say mount road or ponamalle road are private buildings. so who should demolish them?
vmukund July 26th, 2008, 09:17 PM you guys make no sense. first of all, chennai is a more modern city than delhi or mumbai. one recent post mentioned nariman point has skyscrapers. i wonder that person ever been to nariman point. nariman point is charming because it has all those old buildings mostly 6 floors high. bangalore may have more modern buildings thanks to IT but these are primarily in the outskirts. bangalore within outer ring road is drab. and finally, most of these buildings along say mount road or ponamalle road are private buildings. so who should demolish them?
While I agree with barrykul and vijaysundaram on need for major development, I disagree with them too on destroying what is old. Basically, what I think is, we need constructive thinking and not jumping around demolishing things. For that matter, in developed countries, they maintain a part of old city as it was (Singapore/US cities/ England) but they dont go demolishing old buildings to build new ones. I for one think, we need growing up vertically like mumbai or other places but not with demoloshing older but building newer! Bangalore has seen and tasted western influence with new buildings coming up, but seriously I dont think they demolish all the old ones to get newer ones.
arshyam July 27th, 2008, 12:09 AM And what about building tall buildings and creating a traffic/commuting chaos that Bangalore is today? In fact, Bangalore is a bad example to quote regarding tall buildings. Gurgoan or Delhi are good examples since they actually have wide roads to support tall buildings (of course, traffic is bad there too!).
I reiterate my point: without wide roads, one should not encourage skyscrapers. Once again, let me quote New York, a sure entrant to the skyscrapercity club: Most roads in Manhattan, which have real tall buildings, are at least 6 lanes wide, with wide pedestrian platforms, plus subway train system. That is what sustains it. Chennai city, IMHO, has three wide roads: Mount Road, IRR and stretches of PH Road (even they do not have sufficient pedestrian space).
It is unfortunate to hear words like 'conservative' when all I said was that we should plan before building tall structures. There was never any resistance to development :). After all each city should be unique and not a different version of another city. I never said that we do not need skyscrapers in Chennai; I said we can build them as needed and where they can be sustained (for example: OMR or IRR). No point building skyscrapers on Walltax Road... And it is a good thing that places like Mylapore or Royapettah do not have tall buildings.
And who, sir, will destroy old buildings? Many are privately owned, so the govt. cannot do anything about them, except assure structural integrity through inspections. If we have to tear down old localities to build modern ones, we should become like China! No thanks!
Let us focus on better traffic management in the city, widening roads somehow, building taller structures where possible, and planning for future growth (how Ashok/KK/Anna Nagars were planned and laid out). Long term planning is the only way to go...
Having said that, have there been any new areas planned in the scale of Ashok/KK/Anna nagars in the recent past?
kvijayasundaram July 27th, 2008, 02:12 AM you guys make no sense. first of all, chennai is a more modern city than delhi or mumbai. one recent post mentioned nariman point has skyscrapers. i wonder that person ever been to nariman point. nariman point is charming because it has all those old buildings mostly 6 floors high. bangalore may have more modern buildings thanks to IT but these are primarily in the outskirts. bangalore within outer ring road is drab. and finally, most of these buildings along say mount road or ponamalle road are private buildings. so who should demolish them?
 Chennai is more modern than delhi or mumbai?? If you really have that kinda ideas about Chennai in its current state, It is sheer waste of time to even continue this discussion. I hope you said that just for the heck of it.
Again if you think having G+6 floors in Mumbai is charming against its multistoreyed buildings It could be your personal preference for lowrises, or your dislike towards highrises. There are millions of people who like Mumbai better for its shoreline dotted with highrise buildings. So whatever looks charming to you may not be really charming to the vast majority.
Nobody here advocates Chennai to follow Bangalore. People like to compare bangalore to chennai just to indicate the rate at which it is growing. Not essentially the "way" it is growing. I honestly don't know much about Bangalore's infrastrucutre to even comment about it. But whatever pictures I see in this forum about Bangalore, really blows my mind away. The New Airport, Metro and elevated highway are few examples, apart from its newly built glass and steel highrises. What is wrong in thinking chennai should have these? My question is why do some people in this forum think chennai doesn't need them or Chennai should build it when it needs them. What the heck is that "need" supposed to be?
I agree that most of the dilapidated/unsafe/substandard buildings are private. I only wish that their owners take the initiative to raze them down build something that will give a facelift to the city, as in other cities, rather than preserving them for their future generation in the name "history and tradition".
saurabh85 July 27th, 2008, 03:19 AM Damn wtf!!! This thread was supposed to be about Chennai flyovers!!!:bash: It would be better if such discussion is taken to the "chennai discussion" thread.
Rasnaboy July 27th, 2008, 11:41 AM It is unfortunate to hear words like 'conservative' when all I said was that we should plan before building tall structures.
Just to avoid any further misunderstanding, by the word "conservative" I purely meant only those historical buildings (such as the European style buildings [the reason why I mentioned London and Paris] at Parrys corner and the Indo-Saracenic buildings at Chepauk and other parts of Chennai) and never those dilapidated oldies.
I love tall buildings in Chennai (in fact, I'm eagerly awaiting the new amendments of the new Master Plan-II for Chennai), and the infrastructure here needs to be simultaneously improved to support them. As said, these can be discussed in more relevant threads.

Local Administration Minister M.K.Stalin made the announcement after inspecting the final stages of the construction of the flyover on Sunday. He said the flyover, costing Rs.19.8 crore, would ease traffic congestion at the busy Panagal Park junction and also along Usman Road, Venkatnarayana Road and Thyagaraya Road. Two-way traffic would be allowed on the bridge.
Infrastructure development firm Gammon India began work on the flyover in September last year. The bridge, supported by 24 elliptical pillars, would be 781 metres long and 11 metres wide. The pillars are spaced 20 metres or 30 metres apart.
Mr. Stalin said that the flyover coming up at the Thirumalai Road – G.N. Chetty Road junction would be inaugurated in December this year. The Perambur flyover, estimated at Rs.45.67 crore, is expected to be completed in December next year. Other projects to be completed soon include the Jones Road underbridge and the Kathivakkam flyover.

Just they have pulled down the part of Vijayakanth's mandapam and raised 3-4 pillars for the flyover, other than that nothing moved here....

Some more buildings at IRR-Poonamallee High Road Junction just opposite to the Andal Azhagar Mahal (the marriage hall owned by Mr. Vijaykanth) have been demolished. This is to make way for the Koyambedu grade-separator, I believe.

Chennai: The Chennai Corporation plans to throw open to the public 11 flyovers/subways by December 2009 to ease traffic congestion. The flyover at South Usman Road will be opened by CM M Karunanidhi on August 14.
According to official sources, the projects that did not require land acquisition would be ready in ten months, as they only involved the work linked to construction. One such is the flyover at GN Chetty Road which officials hope to complete in ten months. “When there is no land acquisition, we can complete any project in a year. Acquiring land is a tedious task, calling for a lot of coordination between the agencies concerned,” says a senior official.
Except for a high level bridge at the Alandur causeway and subways at Jones Road in Saidapet, and Maniakara Choultry Street off the Government Stanley Medical College and Hospital, the remaining projects are hampered by either land acqusition or shifting of phone and water lines. The subways at the Rangarajapuram level crossing and the Kathivakkam High Road-Cochraine Basin Road level crossing are examples.
The local body is facing a tough battle with the revenue wing. Disbursement of compensatory amounts to landlords is also delaying work at the Villivakkam level crossing. After the land is acquired, it will take at least three months for the service agencies to shift their utility lines. Till then the subway will remain a dream for residents.
On the other hand, negotiation is still on with the least-quoted contractor for a subway at the Korukkupet level crossing.

CHENNAI: In view of the proposed construction of a grade separator at Cenotaph Road-Turnbulls Road junction, the police will introduce new traffic arrangements in and around the area on August 2 (Saturday).
Under the new arrangement, Cenotaph Road will be one way with no entry from Anna Salai. There would also be no left turn on Cenotaph Road for vehicles coming from Cenotaph 1st Street, Chittaranjan Salai and Cenotaph 1st and 2nd Lane. For vehicles coming from Rathinam Nagar, right turn into Cenotaph Road would be prohibited. Only left turn towards Anna Salai is allowed. The stretch of Chamiers Road from Nandanam junction to Turnbulls junction will be made one way with entry from Anna Salai. Those vehicles coming from Kotturpuram Bridge and bound for Nandanam via Chamiers Road cannot take a left turn. They should take Cenotaph Road, turn left at the junction of Anna Salai and reach Nandanam Signal. Vehicles coming from T.T.K. barrykul July 29th, 2008, 10:45 PM Has the City of Chennai Planning Dept thought through the necessary roads that are needed for smooth flow of traffic. Every project appears to be a piecemeal solution for some expedient goal. Very sad. Any city needs a grid of fast expressway/freeway type roads. Take for example Mount Road which is an arterial road spanning from the sea coast to airport and beyond. This road is a legacy road with numerous stop and go signals. Better to have a freeway that takes you from the sea coast to the airport, with appropriate exits. Maybe the entire stretch of mount road should be converted to an elevated freeway i.e. the Kathipara junction road needs to be extended all the way. Similarly a number of north - south freeways are needed. The city of chennai is choking with traffic in every street and alley way. Maybe metro would ease the traffic choke but I would doubt that it make a significant dent.

2. Driving place for Cyclists / Two wheelers / Three wheelers.
3. Grabbage / Waste Dumping area.

Flyover projects proceeding at snail's pace
Chennai, July 23
Though announced with great fanfare, numerous flyover projects in South Chennai are yet to be completed with several years having come and gone. Problems such as delays in land acquisition and escalation of the cost of construction materials have slowed down these projects, and residents now demand that they be completed as soon as possible.
Flyovers and underpasses at several locations were planned in order to reduce traffic congestion in the southern parts of Chennai.
Accordingly, a few years ago, flyover construction work commenced at the Guindy Kathipara Junction, Airport, Guindy-Maduvankarai, Meenambakkam, Pallavaram Railway Station, Pallavaram Radial Road, Tambaram Sanitorium, Tambaram-Velachery Road, Pallikaranai Koot Road and Vandalur.
Among these, the works at Kathipara and near the Airport have been taken up by NHAI. Though these two projects were struggling in the beginning, they are quite close to completion as of now. Other than these two projects, others have been slowed down/not fulfilled due to various reasons:
1) Maduvankarai overbridge: Located near the Guindy railway gate, construction work commenced in 2005. It has been reeling since then due to various delays/impeding factors. Having been at standstill due to land acquisition problems, work finally resumed here towards the end of last year. As of today, work on the ramps on both sides of the bridge have been completed, and the link across the railway track is under construction. If everything goes well, it will be completed by this September.
2) Pallavaram railway overbridge: Commenced in 2003, this should have been completed in 2005. However, due to delays in acquiring land from the Defense Department, work is yet to be completed. The Defense Department finally gave away the land required for this project six months ago. Still, work is yet to resume due to mess-up in the contract and escalation of costs among other reasons.
... rest itn the next post...
Rasnaboy August 1st, 2008, 02:56 PM ^^ Thanks for the good work Gandharva! Let me try the rest... (Here again the translation is a bit crude. Apologies!)
3) Pallavaram radial road flyover: Per plan, this flyover would connect the Thuraipakkam radial road with the GST road. Owing to problems such as land acquisition and change of contract, this project has been put on hold for several years now. A private organization has filed a suit over land acquisition. The flyover work can be resumed only if this was resolved.
4) Sanatorium railway overbridge: The work on this flyover has been frozen for about five years now, thanks to the issues of land acquisition, lawsuit, and petition filed by the public over connectivity to Bharathmatha road. Only now the work has been resumed, and a link from the flyover to Bharathmatha road is under construction.
5) Tambaram railway overbridge: Work on this most important flyover is going on but only on the West Tambaram side. Work on the potion lying on the East Tambaram side is yet to start due to encroachments. People from Ganapathipuram, East Tambaram are insisting the authorities for the speedy completion of the portion lying on their side.
The delay in executing these projects has contributed to the traffic snarls in the fast-developing areas of south Chennai. The public have requested the authorities concerned to gear up their actions.

Actually there is a big debate going on whether to accomodate the hawkers in pinjala subrmaniam street or under the flyover.
Read....Residents-hawkers stand off to fore
http://www.hindu.com/2008/08/06/stories/2008080659760300.htm-
Though the corporation says that accomodating these hawkers in this street is only a temporary measure as they are planning to build a complex for these hawkers in the future, it is more likely not to fructify by noting what has happened in the past.
Even if the corporation keeps up the promise and shift the hawkers to this new complex, more new hawkers are likely to occupy the space cleared in these streets.
So, I think it is better these residents force the corporation to accomodate the hawkers under the flyover in the first instance itself to avoid permanent hawking at their doorstep. It is OK to keep Usman road cluttered and hellish as it has been always instead of making the residential area crowded. Let us not forget hawking and shopping is a noise pollution too.
As a resident of Usman road locality for over 3 decades, I deplore the conditions prevailing in one of the busiest shopping districts in the country and the way in which the administration has been handling this issue so far.
It is now a good chance for the corporation to solve this issue permanently or else not even god can save Usman road.

That flyover is coming up at the junction of Thirumalai Pillai Road and G N Chetty Road where The Residency is located.
In the picture, if you take right before the second (The Residency Hotel) tall building, you will reach Pondy Bazaar (Thyagaraya Road) near Holy Angels Convent. If you take left on Thirumalai Pillai Road, you will reach Kodambakkam High Road near Valluvar Kottam/Vidyodaya Girls School. If you go right ahead, you will reach Gemini flyover on Mount Road.
It sure does look wide compared to the rest of the flyovers being built around the city.

After Running Into Several Bottlenecks, NHAI’s Rs 810-Cr Project To Ease Traffic At City’s Busiest Intersections Seems To Be Finally Nearing Completion
M Gunasekaran | TNN
Chennai: Come October, it will be a smooth ride for commuters headed for the airport on the aesthetically designed, multi-level flyover at Kathipara, the gateway to Chennai that for years has been a traffic bottleneck.
The flyover that is expected to ensure non-stop vehicular flow from the busiest GST road will be ready by end of September. It will be the biggest flyover in the city, bigger than even the Anna flyover at Gemini, with four loops and built at a cost Rs 259 crore. For the National Highways Authority of India, Kathipara will be the first grade separator to be taken up in the country.
At the airport, the NHAI is yet to acquire 16,000 sq m land from the defence ministry. But, a 1.6-km long bridge was built with the backing of the Airports Authority of India. While vehicles proceeding from Tambaram to Kathipara will use the flyover, those headed for the Airport from Kathipara will be allowed to pass through the widened road to ensure non-stop vehicular flow.
With Union shipping and road transport minister T R Baalu setting a firm deadline for completion of the two flyovers, which come under his South Chennai Parliamentary Constituency, the NHAI authorities have been working overtime to finish the task using more than 700 workers.
“In all probability we will finish the work by September,” P Srinivas, project director of NHAI told The Times of India. The Kathipara grade separator should have been completed by April 2007 as per the original plan. But land acquisition and shifting of utilities such as relocation of electricity, telephone, water and sewerage lines delayed the work.
The NHAI authorities thought it would be easier for them to acquire the land owned by the state-run Small Industries Development Corporation (SIDCO). But it turned out to be a more difficult proposition. “Besides reluctance on the part of government in handing over the land, the NHAI was compelled to pay hefty compensation,” an official said.
For the Kathipara flyover, of the Rs 161.41 crore paid as compensation to land owners, a major chunk went to the SIDCO, HTL and other government agencies, sources say. But the flyover, when thrown open to traffic will ensure that vehicles move fast and seamlessly on all sides as there will be no signals to stop them. Landscaping will be done later to beautify the flyover that will prove to be a landmark in the city.
Given the high density of traffic on either side of the GST road at Kathipara, vehicles bound for the airport are often stuck in long snarls. But once the bridge is thrown open for traffic, these hassles would be ironed out, officials said.
As part of NHAI’s Rs 810-crore project, work has been progressing for flyovers at the busy Koyambedu and Padi intersections and also the four-lane road between Koyambedu and Maduravoyal (4.6 km).
At every point, delays on account of non-availability of land in the city affected the work. A protracted legal battle over acquisition of a portion of marriage hall owned by actor Vijayakanth delayed work on the Koyambedu flyover for a long time. The construction of this flyover has been an uphill task for the authorities as it involved shifting of a slew of sewage lines. “The flyover was close to Koyambedu sewage station and a number of lines crisscrossed the junction. Wherever we dug, pipelines burst and Metrowater had to lay new pipelines, further stalling the progress of the project,” Srinivas remarked.
As blocking traffic on these busy stretches would have invited the wrath of the public, authorities continued to work without stopping vehicular movement. Traffic was not blocked for even an hour at Kathipara junction to facilitate the construction, said NHAI officials.
Of the four flyovers, the most challenging has been the one at Padi intersection, which has a railway line passing close to it. A passenger train service was suspended to aid construction. While Padi flyover is expected be opened by January 2009, the officials plan to open traffic on one way of the Koyambedu-Maduravoyal stretch by this October. The Koyambedu flyover is expected to be completed by March. Though all these works taken up by the NHAI caused a lot of hardship to road users, people will eventually have a reason to smile: no toll will be levied.

Chennai: The spurt in construction activity in Chennai and its suburbs, thanks to the boom in the housing sector, is indirectly affecting infrastructure projects like construction of multilevel flyovers. With cement manufacturers being lured by the volume orders to produce 43 and 33 grade cement used for apartments and buildings, they are neglecting to keep up the productuon of 53 grade cement which is used for flyover concrete.
Contractors, who are already reeling under escalating cost of raw materials including cement, steel, blue metal etc, are now faced with an inadequate supply of 53 grade cement. “For all the five grade separator and road-widening works executed by the NHAI, at least 3,000 tonnes of cement are required a month for the next six months. There is a huge gap between demand and supply. The daily supply has come down drastically since the last fortnight,” complained a contractor.
NHAI project director P Srinivas said they have been in touch with cement manufacturers and the works would not get affected since the construction plan has been reoriented. Due to the non-availability of cement, they are now concentrating on other works like earth filling.
Contractors are also facing a shortage of gravel. With construction work going on steadily in and around the city, the yield at the quarry in Naduthangal, about 25 km away from Kathipara, has dwindled drastically. Contractors are now looking at alternative resources. When construction gets temporarily halted for reasons like difficulty in land acquisition and shortage of material, labourers at the site start leaving for greener pastures.
The plight of contractors doesn’t end here: every festival causes a setback to the construction work as labourers who go on leave either don’t return or return after a long break. There are practical problems too: for example, at Kathipara, which witnesses steady traffic flow even during late in the evening, excavation is not permitted during night hours in accordance with pollution control norms.

Koyambedu flyover
Cost of construction:
Rs 90 cr
Land acquisition cost:
Rs 94 cr
To be completed by March 2009
I don't think they could finish Koyambedu project by March 2009. Guess it'll take another couple of years.:bash:

:)
Thank you. i'm now able to understand the place. As you said, it does look wide.

i'll guess too. but once the bypass is done, that itself should provide a lot of relief for this junction. but this is a complex junction. there is metro planned along this. and another elevated road connecting maduravoyal & port. i wonder how all these 3 could coexist here.

For some reason I still like this flyover. Very snaky, very shabby color (green) but I guess it will solve something here. Also as someone said, if they pedestrianize one side and leave other side for cars (no trucks), it will be really good!
Also somehow it makes me think of some kind of a developed city like look :).

I am not sure what you mean. Such projects will never get approved, let alone built in any developed country/city. What you probably mean is thew 60s structuralist American look ? They are very much out of fashion now and are being torn down in many western countries.

I dont know what structuralist american look is! I am too young for the 60s.
However what I see here is a whole business/retail district has an alternate way to move vehicles. In that sense it is ok. Snaky path etc, ofcourse the planning dept has done their job :-). There is only so much they can do at the moment (instead of bringing everything down etc) and I think its a good step forward. Plus, good part of flyovers is, no hawkers on top apart from the signal.
Even in developed countries we have so many traffic jams etc. The mentality of the driving indians has to change first for any other bigger change.

Chennai: Come August 14, the city’s landscape will be dotted with yet another grade separator as the Chennai Corporation gives finishing touches to the 850-m Usman Road-Duraisamy Road flyover — a project completed in ten months flat.
For local administration minister M K Stalin, the inauguration of the flyover will be a 10-year-old dream come true. He was the instrumental force behind the speedy completion of the project, which along with the recently-opened North Usman Road-Mahalingapuram flyover and the Cenotaph Road-Turnbulls Road flyover (work for which will start in January), was conceived way back in 1999 during his tenure as the Chennai mayor.
In all, he had planned 13 flyovers across the city but could complete only nine when the regime changed in the 2001 Assembly elections. When the DMK returned to power in 2006, the abandoned projects were revived and Stalin, as the local administration minister, added another flyover to his list — on G N Chetty Road.
“As soon as he took charge as the local administration minister he called a meeting of corporation officials and directed them to revive the pending projects immediately. He was keen to see flyovers at all vital junctions in order to ease traffic congestion,” a senior Chennai Corporation official told The times of India.
So keen was Stalin about the flyovers that he frequently called meetings of the officers of Chennai Corporation, Metrowater and land administration and revenue departments. “If the flyovers are coming up in such a short span, the credit goes to him. The South Usman Road flyover work was completed in ten months, while the one on North Usman Road took hardly nine months. The flyover on G N Chetty Road is all set for inauguration in November,” an official in the bridges department said.
According to the official, the weekly coordination meetings of the service agencies such as electricity board and Metrowater, held in Ripon Buildings, had a direct impact on the pace of the projects. “The design had many pre-fabricated elements, so we didn’t waste any time on the site. It helped us focus on other aspects like shifting of electricity and water lines. The service agencies extended full support,” Rajesh Lakhoni, commissioner, Chennai Corporation, said.
Out of public eye, far away in Dooming Kuppam, off the Marina coast, the pre-casting construction site of the Corporation had been buzzing with activity since June last year.
The escalation of the cost of construction material did not deter the contractor — Gammon India — from continuing the work. Girders were transported during midnight hours to avoid obstruction of traffic. The Usman Road project cost Rs 19.8 crore to the state exchequer, sources said. The DMK-led council has resolved to build at least 16 flyovers and subways in the city at the cost of Rs 380 crore. “We want the city to be free-from congestion. The previous AIADMK government shelved all the projects conceived by the erstwhile DMK council. They failed to think of any transportation project for the future,” Chennai mayor M Subramanian told The Times Of India.

Chennai Corporation officials attribute the speedy completion of the flyover to the frequent meetings of corporation, Metrowater, electricity board and land department officials called by Stalin
