India101 October 24th, 2008, 04:15 AM This design is AWESOME!!! If its opening in 2010 does that meen constuction has started?
Samrat October 31st, 2008, 08:26 PM now their website says the Westin Kolkata is opening on 1 January, 2011 which means its inaugural is delayed by a few months.
Suncity November 9th, 2008, 06:16 PM The big question is has construction work really started? Has the project even got clearance from various agencies? What will be the impact of slowdown on the project?

TAKING HOSPITALITY TO NEW HEIGHTS
World-class hotel in heart of New Town
Subhro Niyogi | TNN
Starwood, one of the world’s largest hotel and leisure companies, has decided to check in at New Town when the township’s first five-star property is commissioned for 2011. The 350-room hotel will tower over an 8-acre plot in the township’s central business district.
Sources in the hospitality industry said Starwood’s Westin group had replaced InterContinental Hotel Group (IHG) that had initially tied up with development firm Shristi Urban Infrastructure Development Ltd (SUIDL) for a luxury hotel in Rajarhat in 2005. IHG has since tied up with Emaar-MGF and Riverbank Holdings to manage hotels under Holiday Inn and Crown Plaza brands.
Though Shristi director Hemant Karnoria claimed both IHG and Starwood were in the fray for managing the proposed hotel, sources said the property would carry the Westin logo. A lifestyle brand that competes in the upper upscale sector, Westin hotels are spread over 30 countries. It is the first global brand to offer inroom spa treatments and the first to go smoke-free in North America.
If Westin does move into New Town, it will have one of the most contemporary hotel properties in India. The twin towers, designed by Spanish architect firm Cervera & Pioz, will be Kolkata’s first. The taller of the two will be 42-storeys and 142 metres high.
“We are committed to creating a world-class hotel. The architecture will be extremely contemporary. It will be a signature landmark,” said Kanoria. The project cost is a whopping Rs 700 crore.
A blend of the colonial and the contemporary style of architectural design, the towers will incorporate the novel bionic concept and be completely eco-friendly Green building certified by US rating agency LEED. The facility will house the hotel, a shopping mall, entertainment facilities and commercial complex.
Work on the project is slated to commence in January 2009, nearly three years behind schedule. Various factors, both strategic and otherwise, led to the project delay. “Shristi has received the approval from the government last month for commencement of work. The contractor is mobilizing resources at the site and construction will begin next month,” Kanoria said.
While the global slowdown and the recent Mumbai terror attacks is expected to adversely impact business and tourism in the immediate future, Kanoria reasoned that it was the best time to commence construction so that the hotel would be ready in 28-30 months to catch the boom when the turnaround happens.
“By 2011, the economy would have bounced back and tourism would be doing well. New Town, too, would have got over the infrastructure constraints and become a destination,” he argued.
Located close to the airport and the IT hub, the hotel will target transit, business and leisure traffic. “The hotel will be the hottest dining and entertainment spot with life music, casual and fine dining, dancing, shopping and more,” Kanoria added.

I can't believe that TOI did this. Its awful.
but the top render is the new design and it replaced the older more satanic version of the renders(just look at all those nasty curves and scaffolding points) yuck no wonder TOI is still clinging on to it.

CAUGHT IN A DEADLOCK
Supply row stalls 5-star hotel project
Suman Chakraborti | TNN
Kolkata: First the recession, and now tussle over who will supply building construction material. With contractors belonging to some political party or the other fighting each other to supply building construction material, it is the real estate developers who are facing a tough time to finish their projects by the deadline.
Work on the five-star hotel project that Shristi Infrastructure Development Corporation is implementing in New Town, which would be the biggest hotel project till date, has got halted for the last four days due to tussle allegedly between two rival CPM groups — one from Jatragachi and another from Ghuni village in Rajarhat over who would supply building construction material.
“Work has stopped unfortunately due to the tussle between two local groups who supply building construction material. We want the problem to be sorted out as soon as possible so that we can carry on work,” said the company’s head of planning and development, Shankar Mukherjee.
The company officials have already approached housing minister Gautam Deb and local CPM MLA Rabin Mondal, who have been overseeing these issues and the local CPM committee member, but the dispute is yet to be sorted out.
Company officials resented the unexpected delay. “It had taken around two years to get the building plan of the hotel sanctioned by the Hidco authorities. Besides, work has been hampered time and again for about six months due to this tussle between the groups over who would supply building construction material,” Mukherjee said. The earlier deadline of the project was by 2008.
Mondal, who is the chairman of the project felicitation committee that has been formed by Hidco to look after such disputes, said the particular case of Shristi’s hotel project has been discussed and sorted out. “The dispute with that particular case has been sorted out and we have asked the material suppliers to resume work,” he said. Mukherjee, however, said they did not know when work could be resumed.
Mondal, however, conceded that such disputes over building material supply was occurring in Rajarhat for quite some time now. “Whenever such disputes occur, we sit with the parties to sort out the disputes,” he said.
Shristi’s hotel project — the foundation of which was laid in 2006 — will be biggest five-star hotel project, not only in Rajarhat but the entire city. The hotel will be of 42 floors with a helipad on the roof. The hotel coming up on five acres on Action Area-II will have 200 rooms. The project cost has been pegged at Rs 250 crore.
The tussle between rival groups of CPM over this issue was always there and the problem increased after the Lok Sabha election when workers with the local Trinamool Congress also started demanding that developers will have to take material supply from them. Earlier, Rosedale Gardens complex — the upcoming biggest housing complex for NRIs in New Town’s Action Area-III, faced a similar problem. After the Lok Sabha election, a group of the local Trinamool Congress started demanding that the authorities will have to take building material supply from them. Work was hampered for some days after which the Hidco authorities sorted out the issue.
Hidco officials said the people engaged in material supply are mostly the landlosers from whom Hidco had taken land to set up the township. “There is a cooperative for landlosers where they are trained so that they can lend the manpower required for such projects,” said a senior official.
but fortunately the good news is that the project is very much on..
arijeetb August 3rd, 2009, 02:51 PM TOI EPaper (http://epaper.timesofindia.com/Default/Scripting/ArticleWin.asp?From=Archive&Source=Page&Skin=TOINEW&BaseHref=TOIKM/2009/08/03&PageLabel=5&EntityId=Ar00501&ViewMode=HTML&GZ=T)
but fortunately the good news is that the project is very much on..
^^It is very much on; and this situation should be temporary. I think it is time our media does not whack their brains too much and draw conclusions. By doing so, they mess with key facts. The hotel has more than 300 rooms and land area is probably more than 5 acres.
SarafIndian August 3rd, 2009, 06:57 PM Media (especially TOI) should stop projecting these small issues as disaster. I think company like Shristi has faced these kind of matters many times in the past. They surely know how to handle it.

Site Location
The site for the proposed development is located at the eastern edge of the municipal limits of Kolkata, called ‘Rajarhat’. The proposed site is the only hotel plot in the CBD of Rajarhat.
The West Bengal Housing Infrastructure Development Corporation (HIDCO), has planned a new township ‘Rajarhat’ as a hub for business, trade, industries, institutions and culture. Though it is
planned as a self-contained nodal growth centre, it will be integrated with the future spatial/functional structure of the metropolis.
The site is well suited for the proposed development due to its location in one of the largest and well planned infrastructural development areas in the city, proximity to airport, the IT/ITES sector hub being created in this area and several non IT commercial developments.

http://www.telegraphindia.com/1091028/jsp/calcutta/story_11664634.jsp
Shristi Hotel, an arm of Shristi Infrastructure Development Corporation Ltd, has joined hands with global hospitality major Westin Hotels & Resorts, for the 323-key address which hopes to welcome guests by end-2011.
The twin towers of the G+35 hotel, a “bionic structure”, will boast a rooftop helipad. This is the second hotel project with an overseas partner announced in Rajarhat in recent weeks, with Ambuja Realty confirming the Swissôtel Group as its hospitality partner for the five-star mall hotel atop City Centre 2.
The Shristi-Westin alliance on the eight-acre land parcel would be the first standalone deluxe five-star hotel in a Rajarhat.
Designed by the Spanish firm of Cervera & Pioz, which created the New York Stock Exchange and the Acropolis Museum in Greece, the star address is banking on “building with the bear and running with the bull”, says an industry veteran.

^^I would differ a bit on that. It is around 3km from DLF IT park and even closer to the commercial CBD coming up AA2 comprising Unitech, Ecospace , Tata hospital amongst others. If you are talking about the immediate vicinity of shops and public transportation, then I am not sure it will affect the hotel in any way. It still is within 10 mins from Sector V and 15-20 minutes from the airport making it the second closest 5 star from the airport.
niljee June 8th, 2010, 01:50 PM Indian deal proves sky’s the limit for Lightstep
By Lindsay Fergus
Tuesday, 8 June 2010
Lightstep Technologies has secured its first installation in what is set to become India’s tallest building.
The revolutionary evacuation system, developed in Northern Ireland, will be installed in the five-star Shristi Hotel in Calcutta.
Work has already commenced on the 150 metre high building, which is due to open for business at the end of next year.
The hotel will have a wrap-around shopping and entertainment arcade with a mix of live entertainment, dining outlets, speciality retail and state-of-the-art cinemas.
Although the Dunmurry-based firm has not divulged any financial details, it is believed to be a multi-million pound contract.
The lucrative deal came on the back of a distribution agreement with BCL Secure Premises, part of the giant Shristi Corporation in Delhi.
The agreement gives BCL Secure Premises exclusive rights to sell the Lightstep system and suite of products throughout the Indian marketplace. Kieran Patterson, executive chairman of Lightstep Technologies said: “Last week we had our first site meeting regarding the installation of our technology into the Calcutta hotel. It will be our first major installation anywhere in the world in what is being billed as the ‘safest hotel in the world’.”
Award-winning Lightstep Technologies also has other orders in the pipeline spanning the next three years including a major deal within the mining industry.
Mr Patterson said: “The distribution deal with BCL is really opening up markets that we would not have been able to reach without that partnership.”
Lightstep is also working on new products to add to its existing intelligent LED light technology range which includes Pathfinder, Stairfinder, Hallfinder and Doorfinder.
Nicholas Watts, international marketing director for Lightstep Technologies, stated: “Geographically this is a key strategic agreement. It gives us access to a market serving 1.2 billion people, within a rapidly growing infrastructure. It has helped deliver part of our marketing strategy to create a global presence.”
Mr Patterson added that the team in Belfast was committed to making this new agreement hugely successful for all involved. He said: “It is fantastic for the economy to have a company such as ours to buck the international trends and reinforce real global opportunities that still exist despite the economic downturn. The company’s order pipeline confirms that such opportunities do exist.”

By Lindsay Fergus
Tuesday, 8 June 2010
Lightstep Technologies has secured its first installation in what is set to become India’s tallest building.
Is it so?????.............Anyway this is great news for Kolkata hospitality sector.
Thanks niljee:)
Samrat June 9th, 2010, 11:09 AM Great news indeed. Just to correct the sentence - its not "India's tallest building" but "tallest hotel in India"
Abhishek and Sourav, it would be great if either of you could post a construction photo of the Westin hotel :)

Actually I felt relieved when I saw this pix.
I don't know why there was a question mark in my mind whether this is going to be built or not as many hoteliers have withdrawn their projects from Kolkata.

Suncity August 2nd, 2010, 12:28 AM The first tower will be the Westin Hotel and the second tower will be called the The V Service Residency
Home with helipad at Rs 3.5cr
http://www.telegraphindia.com/1100802/jsp/calcutta/story_12742396.jsp
A rooftop helipad to welcome your guests, the “Rolls Royce of Starwood Grand Spas” in your bionic building, an impregnable blast mitigation system — serviced residences coming up in New Town, Rajarhat, are promising Calcutta a new high in luxury living, all for a neat Rs 3.5 crore each.
Titled The V Service Residency, the property comprises fully serviced, customised condominiums in the league of the Ascotts and JW Marriott serviced apartments.
“The serviced apartment tower will rise 142 metres from the ground, but have only 32 floors, housing 96 luxury lairs,” Sujit Kanoria, the managing director of Shrishti Hotel Pvt Ltd, the developers, tells Metro. The project is expected to be complete in two years.
Concept-designed by Javier Pioz, an expert in bionic architecture, The V units are being sold only by word of mouth to an “exclusive club” of city residents and NRIs. The realtors are confident of a sell-out by the Puja.
“This project has created huge interest in the real estate trade as it has taken New Town pricing to a different plane. Compared with the current average pricing of Rs 3,200 (per sq ft) in New Town, The V is selling at Rs 8,100 by dint of its unique product positioning and this has taken the trade by surprise,” says Abhijit Das of property consultants Lemongrass Advisors.
“The V will usher in a new dimension in safe living. Designed by security advisers from Israel and the US, we will have a unique emergency rescue system, along with a fire protection and prevention system, as well as a blast mitigation design,” adds Kanoria.
The “first bionic building in the country”, The V will seek the platinum level of LEED (Leadership in Environment Engineering & Design) certification, “the only residential building in the country to do so”, according to Ash Bharj, the director (sales & marketing) of Shrishti Hotel.
An example of sustainable eco-design, bionic architecture creates spaces that maximise the use of existing natural resources and minimise energy consumption.
“Our design seeks to mimic the forms of nature and embrace technology,” explains Pioz.
The luxury Westin hotel next door, being developed by the same group and among the tallest in the sub-continent, an amphitheatre, a kids’ play zone and pool, a pergola, the health club run by Westin and The Heavenly Spa will be the other standout features at The V. At the City Walk next door, premium international brands will be wrapped around by sidewalk cafes, landscaped plazas and evening entertainment.
sidney_jec August 2nd, 2010, 09:40 AM The V as it is called is a Hong Kong based firm which manages serviced apartments. thats a great news

sidney_jec June 8th, 2012, 06:50 PM yeah the lat one you posted from September had 13 and 11 floors. these latest ones have 17 and 11. so work on one of them is still stalled or hasnt picked up.

samrat_m July 28th, 2012, 12:10 PM construction of all the 30+ buildings(U/C) in Kolkata r going very slow.Any specific reason for that?
The monsoon seasons are generally a lull period for construction industry as raw materials tend to get wasted a lot. So supply is very restricted.

No chance, keeping in mind the dubious record of different projects in Bengal missing its deadlines. And moreover the interiors havent been started yet, i guess, which might commence once the project is topped out.

very true...they don't seem to be very earnest and in a hurry to open it...look they haven't started the cladding as well... forget about the interiors!
samrat_m March 5th, 2013, 08:49 PM CityWalk Rajarhat is a 150,000 GSF retail and entartainment project, which is a part of the 5-star Westin Hotel. It will become an authentic urban place, like “an organized High Street” with its own diversity of styles as part of the complex urban fabric.

D Jyoti April 24th, 2013, 06:01 PM Now the towers are looking really nice.... Both of them are of almost equal height.... I guess they have surpassed the height of SOUTH CITY!!
Samrat April 24th, 2013, 10:47 PM when completed, its height would be 150 metres. thus it should be around 130 metres now(at 31 floors) which is about 13 metres more than the height of South City towers. So we can say that now its the tallest building in Kolkata.
