Yesterday morning, I visited the City Hall of Gensan looking for interesting view to photo. I got shocked when I saw a big photo in the wall near the ground floor entrance, and I asked the policeman guarding the exit, who is the military man in the big photo. He said it was the photo of General Paulino T. Santos

On February 27, 1939, General Paulino Santos led the first and largest batch of settlers organized under the National Land Settlement Administration to the shores of Sarangani Bay. The 62 pioneers, who mostly came from Luzon, industriously tilled Cotabato's fertile expanse of land. After this first influx of pioneers, thousands more from Luzon and Visayas migrated into the area. This started the displacement of some of the native B'laan to the mountains and lost their livelihood. The B'laan people are the original settlers of the area once called Dadiangas for thousands of years. They live in a nomadic system in the area, where the names of the places are still recalled. One name is Dadiangas, the native word name of the tree specifically grown in the area. Under Indigenous Peoples Right Act IPRA law RA 8371, now they were protected and it is proven under the Philippine jurisprudence of the Supreme Court. Now the B'laan people live side by side and with harmony to the settlers and other immigrants from small islands in Visayas and Luzon. Extract From Wikipedia :

The photo looked familiar to me since it bore a great resemblance to me and my maternal grandfather from Bulacan province, also surname Santos. Though General Paulino T. Santos hailed from Tarlac province, I am wondering if he is related to my grandfather a Santos from Bulacan and a Pinoy with Spanish and Chinese blood heritage.

GENERAL SANTOS CITY (MindaNews / September 25) – For a century or more, anti-Muslim bias or discrimination has been among the primary causes of the social and economic backwardness of the Moros in Mindanao – the most deplored in the country. Despite the Moro
rebellion that shook the government under President Marcos in the 1970s, the diplomatic intervention of Muslim countries and the grant of Muslim autonomy, the bias continued.

This is a fact, not fiction. This is an ugly fact that the Arroyo government has inherited from past governments but which it has hardly attended to -- the fact the government has no excuse of not knowing because it is in its official reports

I. Statistical Facts

Among the latest statistics is that of the shares of the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao in development assistance loans – both coming from Overseas/Official Development Assistance (ODA) and from the Philippine government as compiled by NEDA (National Economic Development Authority).*

*[NOTE: This is part of a paper written by Amina Rasul-Bernardo which she later published as Chapter 7 of her book, Broken Peace? Assessment of the 1996 GRP-MILF Final Peace Agreement. She excerpted Chapter 7 and posted it for members of the internet loop Kusogmindanaw. Comment will refer to this as “the Paper”]

The anti-Muslim bias in the allocation of development assistant loans is a strong argument to support the MILF quest to establish the BJE (Bangsamoro Juridical Entity) envisioned as a genuine self-government much more autonomous politically and economically than the present
ARMM. Since its establishment in 1990, the ARMM has been begging from Manila for its annual budgets and dependent on foreign donations.

Government Loans

A table obtained by the Paper from NEDA shows the small share of the ARMM from government loans – in percentage and in total commitment compared to total national figures by the year:

In 2000: Of the total national loans of 203, the ARMM share was only two (2) or 0.98 percent; of the total loan commitment of 13,313.10 million US dollars ($13.3131 billion), the share of ARMM was 122.94 million US dollars ($122,940,000.00) or 0.92 percent.

In 2001: Total national loans, 202; the ARMM share, two (2) or 0.99 percent; total loan commitment, 13,174.35 million US dollars ($13.17435 billion); the ARMM share, 122.3 million US dollars ($122,300,000.00) or 0.92 percent..

In 2002: Total national loans, 204; the ARMM share, two (2) or 0.98 percent; total loan commitment, 11,856 million US dollars ($11.856 billion); the ARMM share, 121 million US dollars ($121,000,000.00) or 1.02 percent.

[NOTE: The increase in the percentage of share from the total commitment is meaningless since the actual amount decreased by $1 million.]

In 2003: Total national loans, 189; the ARMM share, two (2) or 1.06 percent; total loan commitment, 10,917 million US dollars ($10.917 billion); the ARMM share, 55 million US dollars ($55,000,000.00) or 0.50 percent.

[NOTE: The number of loans was still two (2) but the percentage increase due to the decrease in total loans is meaningless. The percentage of share from the total commitment went down by half and the actual amount by more than half of the 2002 share]

In 2006: Total national loans, 141; the ARMM share, two (2) or 1.4 percent; total loan commitment, 9,506.27 million US dollars ($9.50627 billion); the ARMM share, 54.53 million US dollars ($54,530,000.00) or 0.56 percent.

[NOTE: There were no loans in 2004 and 2005, the two years when the Arroyo government was plunged into political and economic crises -- their adverse affect already felt in 2003 and continued to be in2006.]

The Paper made two observations on the NEDA statistics on government loans and on not included in its table:

“It is instructive to note that ARMM received directly, on average, only 1% of the total number of loans, and less than 1 % of the committed amounts.”

“There are other loans labeled ‘Mindanao’ as well as ‘Intra-Mindanao’. There are also multi-regional and national loans. Although these items did not specify provinces or projects these loan commitments went to, it will be safe to presume that some of the amounts went to ARMM.”
Because of the evident anti-ARMM bias, the Paper’s assumption that “the percentages from “other loans” above are still very small in comparison to the development needs of ARMM, and the commitment to the peace process” must be correct.

ODA Disbursements

The anti-Muslim bias takes a new level by looking into the second table of the Paper – ODA Grants and Disbursements to ARMM in 2002, 2003 and 2005.

This table’s design slightly differs from that of the first table shown above – the number of grants and the amount of disbursements compared to the national totals are without percentages. The reader may supply the percentages. Hence:

In 2002: Of the total 212 ongoing ODA grants, only one (1) was in the ARMM; of the total disbursements of 404.63 million US dollars ($404,630,000.00), none (0) was disbursed in the ARMM.

[In comparison, four (4) grants were ongoing in the Cordillera Administrative Region (CAR) with a disbursement of $19,546,000.]
In 2003: Of the total 276 ongoing grants, only two (2) were in the ARMM; of the total disbursements of 377.04 million US dollars ($377,040,000.00), none (0) was disbursed in the ARMM.

[In the CAR, four (4) grants were ongoing with a disbursement of $21,460,000.]

In 2005: Of the total 305 ongoing grants, only three (3) were in the ARMM; of the total disbursements of 147.53 million US dollars ($147,530,000.00), $70,000.000.00 was disbursed in the ARMM.

[In the CAR, two (2) grants were on going with a disbursement $980,000.00. This is interesting: while the ongoing ODA grant was one less than that in the ARMM, the disbursement was $910,000.00 more.]

There is a third entry: SZOPAD and Multiregional*. For 2002, 2003 and 2005, the numbers of grants in this “third entry” were 35, 39 and 17 respectively; the respective disbursements were $19,546,000.00, $21,460,000.00 and $980,000.000.

*[These refer most probably to provinces of SZOPAD and the other Mindanao regions lumped into one heading, “Multiregional” – a “clever” way of blurring government reports to make the insignificant look significant.]

The Paper noted: “ … some amounts from the SZOPAD and multiregional grants would benefit ARMM provinces, but exactly how much cannot be ascertained with the existing classification of data.” Suffice it to dare say: It must be discouraging.

Foreign Donors

At this point, let it be understood that the ARMM derives its development assistance funds from three main sources: (1) government loans; (2) ODA loans; and (3) foreign donors. By presenting above statistics covering the years 2000 to 2006, the Paper has given an idea of how the ARMM has been assisted from and through the government.

The Paper, in its second paragraph states: “It is estimated that Official Development Assistance (ODA) that poured into ARMM totaled over $1 billion* (these include those not accessed through ARMM).” This the Paper obtained from the ARMM Regional Economic and
Development Planning Office.

*[NOTE: Do not confuse this with the $70,000 ODA fund the ARMM received through the government discussed earlier. We will clarify that later.]

On what projects was the estimated $1 billion-plus used? The Paper, citing ARMM-REPDO, said that “… about 29 ongoing foreign-assisted projects in 2000 reached ARMM. Of these, seven are in human development with the aim of improving the delivery of basic social services, especially in poor and vulnerable communities.“

Specifically mentioned by the Paper as the sources of the estimated $1 billion-plus ODA funds are:

First: The World Bank. It “has implemented the (ARMM) Social Fund and is coordinating the Mindanao Trust Fund (MTF), launched in 2003, (that) is linked to the peace process with the Moro Islamic Liberation Front.”

Second: The Asian Development Bank. It “has provided technical assistance to improve the capacity of ARMM to deliver services.

Third: International Organizations. “The United States Agency for International Development (USAID), the Japanese International Cooperation Agency (JICA), the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA), the European Union, the Australian Agency for International Development (AusAID) and other international organizations have provided funds and technical assistance for education, health, water, electrification and infrastructure projects in ARMM.”

Fourth: Others. “Donor institutions such as the Konrad Adenauer Foundation and The Asia Foundation have assisted in improving the capacity of civil society as well as local governments. Civil society capacity building has been supported by the European Union, the
Netherlands and many others.”

Credited

Much of the recent development in Muslim Mindanao is credited to foreign donors.

The Paper quoted from a 1999 article of Macapando Muslim, chancellor of Mindanao State University-General Santos City: “In some areas, the most visible development activities are those under the auspices of the UN Multi-Donor Assistance Programme for Peace and Development.”

This, the Paper corroborated: “When asked to name development projects, the Muslims of Mindanao cite the donor community (projects), not government.”

Is the government not to be given the credit for the involvement of the foreign donors in the development of the ARMM?

I think GENSAN needs another CBD or to expand the CBD.. Masyado na masikip ang CBD although meron pang mga empty spaces along the corner... Pioneer Ave - 2 lots na lang Available, sa Santiago blvd, 1 lot na lang, Acharon - needs major facelift... National Highway ang may malaking future ahead as many U/Cs are mainly unfolding on this thoroughfare... J. Catolico - Sa lagao area after ng robinson ang kelangan umunlad...

Mga prospects sa GENSAN for the future expansion of the CBD are the following highways and places IMO: (Commercial Enterprises)

That Maritime School is the Mindanao Polytechnic College situated in Barangay Apopong not in Barangay Tambler nor Barangay Makar (There is no barangay in GENSAN in the name of Makar - it is just an informal name of a place near the area.) TY.. :bash:

That bridge is called Silway bridge in barangay LABANGAL... and that downtown PIX of yours is the PIONEER Ave.

The area around the public market is an eye - sore for me - crowded, traffic, infested with not like ours personalities (beggars, tun - og, swindlers, burglars among others) :lol:
Even the Market is the MOTHER of all Eyesores... :ohno:

Sarangani town mayor dies of cardiac arrest

GENERAL SANTOS CITY, Philippines – Mayor Aida Singcoy of Malapatan town in Sarangani Province died of cardiac arrest while on her way to a hospital early Sunday dawn.

Her husband, former mayor Alfonso Singcoy, rushed her to a hospital at around 1 a.m. Sunday, after she complained of chest pain and difficulty in breathing.

But Alfonso said his wife was declared dead on arrival at the hospital.

She was immediately buried Sunday before sunset in accordance with the beliefs and tradition of Muslims.

Local government officials of Sarangani mourned her untimely death.

The late Aida Singcoy was one of only three female mayors in Sarangani who won in the 2007 elections.

Gov't urged to speed up Mindanao railway systemBy Carlo P. Mallo

FOR investments to continue pouring in Mindanao, the government must pave the way by providing an efficient form of mass transport that will carry both people and goods faster with minimal damage.

Opposition Senator Francis "Chiz" Escudero said in an interview Saturday at the Grand Regal Hotel that one of the projects the next administration should fast track is the creation of the Mindanao Railway System (MRS).

"The continued neglect of Mindanao has caused resentment and even fueled separatist sentiments in the region. The next administration must put Mindanao on top of the national agenda," Escudero said. "And one way of doing this is lay down the foundation for the building of the MRS."

The proposed MRS network will have a total length of approximately 1,726 kilometers consisting of eight lines that will connect Davao City to Zamboanga City, with the route passing the cities of Cotabato, General Santos, Butuan, Cagayan de Oro City, Iligan and Dipolog.

The Philippines now has less than 900 kilometers of railroads, with most of the 378 kilometers in operation located in Luzon, specifically in southern Luzon and the Bicol region.

According to the Department of Transportation and Communication (DOTC), only the feasibility study for the Cagayan de Oro-Iligan corridor has been finalized while the one for the Cagayan de Oro-GenSan line is still ongoing. The Iligan-Zamboanga line, on the other hand, is at the technical assessment level.

Once completed, the MRS will shorten the travel time from Iligan to Cagayan de Oro to about 20 minutes, a significant reduction from the current three-hour bus ride on the 145-kilometer route.

Escudero pointed out that railway transport is the cheapest form of land transportation, saying the establishment of the MRS would create employment, spur intra-island trade and tourism.

Both sidewalks ng Santiago at Acharon Blvd. ang magandang idevelop gaya sa PIONEER Avenue! Mabuti na idevelop na rin ang Queen Tuna Park at least may attraction na rin sa Acharon Blvd. Eyesore lang ang mga old blgs. dun at ang Public market at surrounding area! hugaw at gubot! SAMOK! :bash::lol:

I took this shot at London’s Beach resort. I was lucky enough to get a chance to shoot here since this beach is no longer a public beach, it was sold to an investor planning to convert this area into a manufacturing plant.

If you happen to pass by the highway going to Maasim, Sarangani Province, a signboard now says… “London Beach – hinde na beach” (London beach – not a beach anymore)

After shooting the beautiful sunrise, my buddies and I do the next thing we love… fishing. But that’s another story.

Pineapple Plantation

I was commissioned by DOLE Philippines to shoot for their company’s brochure-magazine. They required several images including the pineapple plantations in Polomolok. I thought of putting three important elements in my photos, the sunrise, the pineapples and the majestic Mt. Matutum in the background.

I got up very early in the morning and went straight to the pineapple fields. Good thing the sky was clear enough as not to cover Mt. Matutum. I only have a few minutes to shoot since cloud formations in this area are forever changing by the minute.

As soon as I saw a good spot in middle nowhere, I set up my tripod and camera. “Nowhere” I say since all you can see are pineapples, pineapples and pineapples, that’s as far as your eyes can see! Just imagine around 22,000 acres of agricultural land planted with pineapples.

I also shot a few images at Kalsangi Golf Club. The place is so clean and beautiful with pine trees all around, thus I decided to also take some infrared images. Pine trees are just perfect subjects for infrared and I love it.

Bariles was very fortunate to have been able to attend the blessing of Robinsons Place General Santos City yesterday, September 29, 2009.

The mall which is Robinsons’ biggest in Mindanao, occupying almost 4 hectares of its 8-hectare property along Jose Catolico Avenue, Barangay Lagao at the Tuna Capital was still closed to the public when a Catholic mass was celebrated at its cavernous atrium at 3:00pm, prior to the blessings of its blessing.

Only a few tenants, some mall personnel and invited guests were invited to the spiritual service officiated by no less than the Bishop of the Diocese of Marbel, His Excellency Bishop Dinualdo Gutierrez, DD and six other priests who were later dispersed to bless the different areas of the mall.

Although carpentry work has stopped on most of the leased spaces inside Robinsons, Bariles discovered that some workers were still doing finishing touches on a good number of establishments scheduled to open today, September 30, the “SOFT-OPENING DAY”.

Those ready to serve its customers when the mall opens its doors at 9am, like the Jollibee Franchise of the Teng Family, Giacomino’s Restaurant of Rombar and Aymie Bartolome, Sunset Bistro of Tony and Petite Veneracion, BluGre Coffee Shopm the Team Pacquiao Shop of Manny and Jinky Pacquiao, and Mandarin Garden had their own individual and separate inaugural parties after the mass.

Bariles was able to visit most of these establishments and had a grand time hobnobbing with a lot of GenSan’s movers and shakers, who were all visibly ecstatic with what will be a major change in GenSan’s shopping habits and night life. All the mentioned restaurants also have alfresco dining spaces outside the mall, fronting the National Highway.

It is good to note that all of the owners and franchisees of these estabishments are GenSan residents and so with most of the tenants of Robinsons. This plus the fact that 80% of the staff and workers of the mall owners themselves have all been certified to be genuine “generals”.

Robinsons Place General Santos will have its Grand Opening on October 5, 2009, Monday. This is when its flagship stores, the Robinsons Department Store, the Robinsons Supermarket, the HandyMan finally opens wide its doors to the people of Soccsksargen. Its four Robinsons Cinema follow suit on October 15, 2009.

Air Supply live in Gensan

IF YOU think that the parade of quality live concerts in General Santos City has stopped just because the festivals are over, you have to think again.

The Kalilangan Festival in February was serenaded live by the King of Love Songs, David Pomeranz. The Yaman ng Gensan last July was enlivened by the premiere band of the Philippines, Side A.

Dubbed as Platinum Concert Series 2009, the collaboration of producer-organizer, Dreamwork Ventures and High Frequency Productions continues to astound the locales by pushing the entertainment scene in Socsksargen a notch higher with its third concert series, featuring 80's iconic duo -- Air Supply.

Dubbed as "Air Supply: Live in Gen. Santos City," the concert is set on October 2, starting at 8 p.m. at the Lagao Gym. This most-anticipated concert event is in cooperation with the city government of General Santos and its official media partner, ABS-CBN.

Michael Wee of Dreamwork Ventures, producer of the Platinum Concert Series 2009, is fixed on extending a hefty part of the proceeds by giving back to the community this time around with Air Supply.

Expressing his sympathy and compassion to orphaned children, he identified St. Gemma's Orphanage as the official beneficiary of the concert. Hence, every ticket to this event represents every concert-goers' heart that goes a long way in touching the lives of the little angels at St. Gemma's.

Located in Novitiate Compound, Lagao, General Santos City, St. Gemma's Orphanage and Halfway Home has devotedly catered to the homeless and orphaned children for over 21 years.

Paz Salazar, administrator and one of the Founders of the organization, revealed that the creation, construction and continued existence of their orphanage are due to providence and faith in people and groups like Dreamwork Ventures willing to share and support their vision and advocacy.

PPA upgrades 2 Mindanao ports

MANILA, Sept. 30 (PNA) -- Two seaports identified as priority projects of the Mindanao Super Region were completed earlier this year.

The two seaports are the Davao (Sasa) and the Cagayan de Oro Port Development Projects.

Atty. Oscar Sevilla, general manager of the Philippine Ports Authority (PPA), said that the two ports was endorsed by the Mindanao Economic Development Council (MEDCo).

The MEDCo heads the Mindanao Super Region Inter-agency group, which is tasked to oversee the drive to make the area the country's agribusiness hub.

Virgilio L. Leyretana, Sr., chairman of MEDCo, said "These development interventions would significantly improve the water transport industry in northern and southern part of Mindanao."

The rehabilitation of the Davao (Sasa) seaport is 49 percent ahead of schedule when completed in January 2009.

The P420 million project started in February 2007. It involves the rehabilitation of the quay and construction of a reinforced concrete wharf, mooring and fendering area, back-up area, as well as port lighting and drainage systems.

The Sasa wharf's project development have six phases, namely site development, concrete paving, addition of reefer outlets, construction of weigh bridges, replacement of fendering and mooring, and construction of wharf's extension.

The upgrading plan becomes more urgent since the Sasa wharf has been designated as a regional transshipment port within the East ASEAN Growth Area (EAGA) sea transport network.

On the other hand, the Cagayan de Oro port, involves the construction of back-up area for the newly-built 4,150 square meter wharf.

The Construction of the back-up area started in February 2007 and was completed in February 2009.

The scope of work includes widening of the existing reinforced concrete wharf, construction of a back-up area, construction of drainage system and installation of port lighting system.

Sevilla said Cagayan de Oro port is one of the seven local international vessel catering ports to compete with global standards by 2010.

These ports include North Harbor, South Harbor, Batangas, Iloilo, Zamboanga, the Makar Wharf in General Santos and in Cagayan de Oro.

"The rehabilitation of the port will surely spur economic growth in the countryside," Sevilla said.

The port of Cagayan is just a wooden wharf catering to the bancas of the pre-war businessmen and passenger when it was first constructed in 1908.

Over the years, the port underwent many changes in terms of port administration and infrastructure.

The Port of Cagayan de Oro is located at the northeast of Mindanao within Macajalar Bay, near the mouth of Cagayan de Oro river. (PNA)

Strong winds topple power lines in South Cotabato, Sultan Kudarat

GENERAL SANTOS CITY, Oct. 1 (PNA) -- Power supply was cut off for several hours in key areas of Koronadal City and six other municipalities in South Cotabato and Sultan Kudarat provinces after strong winds and heavy rains spawned by typhoon Pepeng battered the area late Wednesday afternoon.
Engr. Santiago Tudio, general manager of the South Cotabato Electric Cooperative (Socoteco)- I, said Thursday that the unusually strong winds toppled down trees and several electric posts, causing a temporary shutdown of power lines in Korondal City and the muncipalities of Sto. Nino, Tantangan, Banga, Norala and Surallah in South Cotabato and Lutayan in Sultan Kudarat.

He said the blackout started several minutes after the rains and the intense wind, which was reportedly brought by typhoon Pepeng, hit ground at around 5:00 p.m.

Based on their initial monitoring, Tudio said several power lines in the area were damaged after nearby trees fell on them.

Tudio, who immediately ordered the full deployment of the electric firm’s linemen and contracted electricians, said two houses reportedly suffered damages due to the fallen trees and electric posts.

“Our personnel immediately repaired the damaged power lines and so far, normal power supply has been restored in most of parts of the affected areas,” he said in a radio interview.

As of Thursday morning, the South Cotabato Provincial Disaster Coordinating Council (PDCC), which earlier cautioned local residents on the possible impact of typhoon Pepeng, is still evaluating the damages wrought by the rains and the strong winds that hit the area.

Nelida Pereira, the Provincial Social Welfare and Development Office chief and PDCC action officer, said they were specifically verifying the impact of the reported twister that hit the municipality of Banga Wednesday afternoon.

Insp. Dennis Madriaga, Banga police chief, said Thursday morning that a mild tornado hit at least three villages in the area on Wednesday afternoon but there were no major damages or any casualties reported.

He said the twister, which affected barangays Benitez, Punong Grande and San Jose, reportedly knocked down trees, electric posts and a portion of Banga National High School’s perimeter fence.

“The initial reported damages were manageable but were still checking whether it caused other damages in the neighboring areas,” he added.

Last Sunday, heavy rains brought by tropical storm Ondoy triggered flashfloods in seven villages on Polomolok town in South Cotabato, destroying at least 70 houses and 30 hectares of farmlands.

The PDCC placed the damaged to properties and agricultural crops in Polomolok town at P3 million. (PNA)

Pops Fernandez at KCC Mall today, Sunday!

In an apparent bid to coax shoppers away from nearby Robinsons Place today, on the eve of its scheduled star-studded Grand Opening on Monday, October 5, 2009, the KCC Mall of GenSan is headlining no less than the Concert Queen, Pops Fernandez for the final day of its 3-day Mallwide Sale!

This info Bariles got from a poster he saw at the entrance of KCC last week (see photo above). Pops Fernandez will perform at the mall’s Convention and Event Center at 5pm today. From the looks of it, she will sing songs from her latest album HOPE.

This is the second time that Pops Fernandez will be performing live in the Tuna Capial. Bariles blogged about her concert here last year.

KCC Mall of GenSan has also just recently opened two more apparell shops in its new North Wing, Upper Ground Floor yesterday, Saturday.

These are Folded and Hung; and Plains and Prints, which according to reports, were franchised by KCC itself.

A third one, CROCS opened a week earlier as recounted in a separate article .

KCC also adjusted its mall hours by increasing it by one hour during weekends giving their clients more time to shop.

So for Fridays and Saturdays, the mall closes at 9pm. On regular days however, it still closes at 8pm.

All these changes being undertaken by the KCC Management only mean one thing. They will not let the entry of Robinsons Mall into the shopping landscape of General Santos City catch them lying down.

So watch out for more of these good news in the next few weeks.

Meanwhile, the generals could only sit back and enjoy these positive developments taking place, all redounding to their benefit, helping make their city truly Mas Maganda at Mas Masayang GenSan!

GENERAL SANTOS CITY – The National Food Authority (NFA) sets a goal of buying some 99,000 bags of corn worth P65 million from the General Santos City (GenSan) and Sarangani areas until year-end, an agency official said.

Tony dela Cruz, NFA regional director for Southern Mindanao, said the procurement program for corn grain now covers two classifications – Class A at P13 per kilogram and Class B at P12 per kilogram.

“The variation in the corn buying is meant to accommodate the request of farmers to increase NFA’s buying price back to P13 per kilogram but for Class A corn,” Dela Cruz said in an interview.

According to Dela Cruz, Agriculture Secretary Arthur Yap acceded to the request of farmer leaders in a recent meeting last week in Manila to raise again NFA’s buying price for corn.

The farmers, in some instances during the meeting, figured in an altercation, urged Yap to buy corn again in its previous price at P13 a kilogram from NFA’s previous buying price of P12 per kilo.

Malou Misa, NFA statistician for Sarangani and GenSan, said private traders are buying corn at P7 a kilogram, way below the price of the agency’s support price leading farmers in droves to sell their corn to NFA.

But she said that NFA limits buying of corn from individual farmers up to three hectares only or 210 bags at 70 bags per hectare yield, while coop members may sell up to seven hectares or 4,900 bags.

Jun Hectin, NFA provincial operations officer, said the agency has bought a total of 20,933 bags since July – broken down as 8,787 bags of Class A corn and 12,146 bags for Class B corn, mostly yellow corn.

He explained that Class A corn must have 97 percent purity, while below 94 percent is classified as Class B.

The P13 support price includes incentives like 20 centavos for drying, another 20 for delivery and 30 centavos for farmers who are members of a cooperative or known as the cooperative development incentive fund (CDIF).

Farmers deliver their corn and palay at NFA buying stations at the provincial office here in the city and mobile procurement teams going around corn areas like the towns of Malungon, Alabel, Malapatan, Maasim Kiamba and Maitum in Sarangani.

Robinsons inaugurates mall in GenSan, gets tax incentives

GENERAL SANTOS — Robinsons Place-GenSan has started operations here and expects most tenants to follow suit, after opening on Sept. 30 with many stores still closed.

Robinsons’ presence in this city brings to three the major department stores in operation at the "Tuna Capital of the Philippines."

The Gokongwei-owned property firm Robinsons Land Corp., which can still expand on its eight-hectare lot here, held a big bash yesterday to draw as much attention it could muster.

Roseann C. Villegas, spokeswoman for Robinsons Land, said:"Spaces are fully leased out, majority of which belong to local entrepreneurs. We hope the other tenants will do their best to fully operate their businesses [as soon as possible] since we are already open to the public."

Lance Y. Gokongwei, president of Robinsons Land parent JG Summit Holdings, Inc. and Robina Y. Gokongwei-Pe, senior vice-president and group general manager of the Robinsons Retail Group, were to lead the grand bash, bringing along show business celebrities, Ms. Villegas said.

The two other malls in General Santos are the Gaisano Mall and KCC Mall, who have expanded to keep pace with the competition.

Robinsons Place-GenSan sits on an eight-hectare property in Barangay Lagao, near the two older malls.

Henry Sy-led mall operator SM Prime Holdings, Inc. a few months ago reportedly inked a lease agreement for an eight-hectare property as part of its plans to enter the mall business here.

Among the establishments at Robinsons already in operation are boxing icon Emmanuel "Manny" D. Pacquiao’s Team Pacquiao Novelty Store, his wife Jinky’s franchised BlueGre Coffee Shop, the local Jollibee franchise of fishing tycoon Domingo Teng, and hotelier Romeo Bartolome’s Giacomino’s Pizza.

Anchor tenants Robinsons Department Store, Robinsons Supermarket, and the HandyMan opened yesterday. The Robinsons Cinemas will follow suit.

Silicon Valley, the National Book Store, women’s apparel store Maldita, and clothing retailer Bench are some of the other tenants of Robinsons Place-GenSan.

Other projects of Robinsons in southern Philippines include the Robinsons Cybergate shopping mall in Davao City and the Robinsons Department Store in Cagayan de Oro City.

Mayor Pedro B. Acharon, Jr. said the Robinsons mall would enjoy tax incentives since mall operations have been listed as one of the "investment priority areas" under the city’s new investment code. "The entry of Robinsons in the city will augur well for the local economy and this is also a manifestation of investors’ confidence in the local government and residents of the city," the mayor added.

In an earlier briefing paper, Robinsons Land said the two-storey mall has an estimated gross floor area of 32,700 square meters and gross leasable area of 24,100 square meters. It described the city as a "dynamic gateway for trade access" to major foreign markets like Brunei, Malaysia, Indonesia, Australia, the Pacific Islands, Middle East, continental Europe and the United States. — Romer S. Everyone already knows that today, Monday is the Grand Opening of Robinsons Place General Santos and that showbiz personalities like Donita Rose, Christian Bautista, Yasmien Kurdi and Ms. Dawn Zulueta will be on hand to welcome the mall’s first batch of shoppers.

But do you also know that a few meters down the block, the KCC Mall of GenSan is also inaugurating its new North Wing and has commissioned no less than Star in a Million Champion Erik Santos to headline its lineup of entertainers?

Erik Santos will be performing in a show at the mall’s Convention and Event Center, the same floor where most of KCC’s new shops are opening today. Concert Queen Pops Fernandez was KCC Mall’s first showbiz guest yesterday and at the rate they are going, it seems that we can expect more Manila performers from them just to prove that they are meeting Robinsons Place of GenSan’s’ parade of stars head-on.

GENERAL SANTOS CITY, Oct. 5 (PNA) – Gokongwei-owned Robinsons Land Corp. unveiled in grand fashion here Monday morning the biggest of its emerging chain of shopping malls in Mindanao.

Robinsons Place General Santos formally opened its doors to the public here amid a festive atmosphere that glittered with the presence of popular celebrities and top government and business leaders in the island.

The mall’s opening was led by Lance Gokongwei, president and chief operating officer of Robinsons Land’s mother firm JG Summit, Presidential Adviser on Mindanao Affairs Secretary Jesus Dureza and city officials spearheaded by Mayor Pedro Acharon Jr.

Dureza, who had supported the mall chain’s expansion in Mindanao, lauded the opening of the new mall complex here as it essentially highlights the island’s vibrant and stable business climate.

He said it also shows the island’s resilience amidst the continuing economic crisis and the volatile peace and order condition in some areas.

“This is a big accomplishment for Mindanao and we expect more major investments and similar development ventures to come in soon,” Dureza said.

The two-storey mall, which held a soft opening for its several tenants last September 30, sits on an eight-hectare property in Barangay Lagao where the city’s two other existing shopping malls are located.

Robinsons Place General Santos, so far the biggest shopping mall in Region 12 or Southwestern Mindanao, is the company’s third in Mindanao and the 23rd throughout the country.

Robinsons Land operates the Robinsons Cybergate shopping mall in Davao City and the Robinsons Department Store in Cagayan de Oro City.

The mall’s anchor tenants Robinsons Department Store, Robinsons Supermarket and the HandyMan opened Monday. The Robinsons Cinemas will reportedly soon follow.

Yes! 1 Floor lang pala ang ROB Place Gensan... Ang department store lang ang may escalator 2 stories pero maliit lang din ang kanilang department store parang sa FITMART X2! :lol:

Medyo disappointed ako pero better have a ROB than no ROB at all diba! hindi lang siguro talaga contented ang mga TAO or ako! :bash:

Yes! 1 Floor lang pala ang ROB Place Gensan... Ang department store lang ang may escalator 2 stories pero maliit lang din ang kanilang department store parang sa FITMART X2! :lol:

Medyo disappointed ako pero better have a ROB than no ROB at all diba! hindi lang siguro talaga contented ang mga TAO or ako! :bash:
Pero in all fairness, classy talaga ang ROB compare sa KCC at GAisano! ^^

^^ That's fine po Fahds, coz what we have currently here in Cebu is way too small compared to Gensan's Robinsons.. Pero naa lang hinuon gina-construct na bag-o. :D

Sa tingin ko phase 1 lang yung ginawa na robs sa gensan... baka yung mall may provision pa para additional floor gaya nung part ng expansion ng KCC... Kasi baka tiningnan muna nila yung response ng tao.. anyways, half palang din naman ng lupa yung ginamit so malaki pa yung space for expansion....

That's a possibility... Maybe RLC is just testing the waters here in GENSAN on how the people will react to their mall... pag maganda response, baka magexpand din sila especially pag may SM na kasi definitely gagawa ang SM ng mas malaking mall kesa ROB and even KCC... and mas strategic ang location ng SM kasi sa gitna mismo ng CBD at hindi maka cope up ang ROB if ganun lang ang mall nila...and take note, KCC is still a force to reckon with especially halos magkatabi lang sila at mas maraming stores at mas malaki ang KCC... and there is also GAISANO... 3 malls in 1 address... SM lang ang humiwalay...
at konti lang ang rented spaces ng RP GENSAN...

For those who regularly follow ABS-CBN’s programs, you should have known by now that another general, or for the unitiated, a “native of General Santos City” has started filtering into the consciousness of the country after her identity was revealed at the initial telecast of the new season of the reality TV show, Pinoy Big Brother, which has been dubbed PBB Double-Up.

Her name is Melissa Cantiveros, a student of the Mindanao State University in Tambler, GenSan whom they have tagged as “Inday Kengkay“.

Melissa hails from Barangay Calumpang and wants to be a teacher. She majors in English at the MSU and is as funny in person as she is from the first few times we see her inside Kuya’s new house.

Bariles was personally present when it was Melissa’s group of 20 auditioners’ turn to be presented to PBB Resident Director Laurenti Dyogi during auditions at the GenSan Gym in Barangay Lagao last April 26, 2009.

It was a long day for everyone and only about a 3rd of the more than 10,000 hopefuls from Soccsksargen and as far as Zamboanga and Cebu have already been given the look-see by Direk Dyogi.

Melissa, a tiny wisp of a girl wasn’t noticeable the first time Bariles saw her lined up against the wall with other Kim Chiu and Gerald Anderson-wanna-bees while facing the unsmiling director inside the screening room of the gym But when she started giggling and quipped funny answers to the director’s questions, mixing her Tagalog and English with a smattering of Cebuano, she came across as a natural comedienne.

When the director pushed her for more answers, Bariles knew then that she’d make it to the first screening

Melissa did survive the first screening and stayed on, to pass the 2nd screening, where they were whittled down to 30 a few hours after. Finally, before midnight came, she landed among the top 10!

Melissa bested so many taller and prettier girls and if you see her up front, you wouldn’t immediately notice the qualities that made ABS-CBN choose her from more than 10,000 young men and women who auditioned in GenSan or for that matter, more than 70,000 from all over the Philippines. But now that you see her on TV, you will gradually find out that she really got what it takes to have made it this far.

If she plays her cards right and never forgets that her stint inside Big Brother’s House is still a GAME first and foremost; and, eventually make it into the finals, then it is our turn as her fellow GENERALS to take out our CELLPHONES and start voting for her eventual VICTORY!

Robinsons opens biggest mall in General Santos City

FINALLY, after years of waiting, the biggest mall in General Santos City is set to open today.

Robinsons Place formally opens its doors to the public with celebrations featuring fun, games and surprises with known personalities from show business and local business establishments in this region’s newest shopping destination.

The event, to be attended by the bigwigs of JG Summit Co. (JGSC) including founder John Gokongwei and family, will also feature show-business personalities like Dawn Zulueta, Donita Rose, Christian Bautista, Yasmien Kurdi, Derek Ramsay and Iza Calzado. Local political and business personalities are also expected to grace the occasion.

Robinsons General Santos, the third and the biggest Robinsons mall to date in Mindanao, is operated by Robinsons Land Corp., a subsidiary of JGSC. Two other Robinsons Place are in Cagayan De Oro and Davao City.

Danilo Camat, group property manager for Mindanao of Robinsons Land Corp., said Robinsons GenSan has a floor area of 4 hectares that sits on an 8.5-hectare property acquired by the company in the 1990s.

GenSan’s newest shopping mall will generate 300 direct employment opportunities for city residents, while around 1,500 will be indirectly employed through the number of business outlets in the mall.

“We aim to become a multicomponent store where you will find what you are looking for under a vibrant and breezy atmosphere,” Camat said, in an interview with the press during the mall’s soft opening on September 30.

Camat added that with the opening of Robinsons Place GenSan, local residents will not have to go to Manila, Cebu or Davao to experience a world-class shopping convenience.

“Basically all the stores and attractions in other Robinsons malls in other areas are here in Robinsons Place GenSan. But, of course, we added a local touch by tapping homegrown stores to add local flavor to one’s malling experience,” Camat added.

Robinsons GenSan will also feature state-of-the-art technologies from its cinemas to its restroom facilities.

Camat said “male urinals will use a waterless technology and restroom faucets will be sensorized to give shopping patrons the utmost shopping convenience.”

Wow Rob Place Gen San is now open. Maraming shops na dinala diyan from Metro Manila.

You know what - Tokyo Tokyo supposed to open its branch there kaya lang hinarang daw ng officials diyan. So they will try siguro kapag tinayo na ang SM Gen San:)

I doubt it. Hindi gagawin yan ng mga taga city hall o sa capitolyo kasi magboomerang din yan sa mga politiko jan. im sure there are other reasons kung bakit hindi natuloy ang Tokyo2. Bat pa sila mag-invite ng investors sa GenSan tapos haharangin lang pala. Pipiliin lang pala nila kung sino dapat mag-invest sa Food business jan. :ohno: :ohno: :ohno:

i think malaking chance manalo si inday Melissa ng GenSan sa PBB dahil shes lovable, funny, down to earth, pang-masa at inday na inday ang dating. Sa dami ba naman ng mga gwapo at gwapa, mestizo at mestiza looking, pati mga hilaw na mestiza/o sa GenSan ay si inday pa ang napili. i bet she will win hehehe :bash::bash::bash:

Kalilangan, Best Festival in the Country – ATOP

General Santos City adds another feather to its cap with its major win at the recently concluded 10th ATOP National Convention held last week at the Tuna Capital.

Its Kalilangan Festival, which is celebrated annually every February in commemoration of the city’s Foundation Anniversary was awarded by the Association of Tourism Officers of the Philippines as the Best Tourism Event of 2009 – Major City Category.

The award was handed out by Tourism Secretary Ace Durano during the final night of the 3-day gathering at the KCC Convention and Event Center, as part of the ATOP Best Tourism Practices Awards. This is a project of both the ATOP and the Department of Tourism with the aim to “recognize and honor the most outstanding/ significant tourism projects and programs and tourism officers who have excelled in their respective local government units.”

“It is for this reason the ATOP decided to institutionalize an annual system of recognition of distinguished tourism personalities, groups, and events. Receiving the Best Tourism Event Award from Secretary Durano were Tourism Council Vice-Chairman Rey Billena, in behalf of Chairman Mayor Jun Acharon and GenSan City Councilor Richard Atendido, who chairs the Tourism Committee at the SP.

In previous years, the nearest that the city got to the championship was when its Tuna Festival won as First-Runner Up last year, during the Awards Night in Iloilo City, host of the 9th ATOP National Convention.

In an interview later this week, Mayor Acharon thanked not only the ATOP but also the GSC Tourism Association, the Festival Director Orman Manansala, and the members of the GSC Tourism Council for helping make this recognition possible.

DOT secretary amazed by Sarangani river tubing adventure

Maitum, Sarangani (October ) -- "Wala itong katulad sa bansa (nothing like this in the country)," was one of the comments Tourism Secretary Joseph "Ace" Durano gave after enjoying the 1.6-kilometer whitewater tubing ride in barangay New La Union on October 3.

He noted that other resorts may have rafting, "you would be lucky to get wet, but here, once you step into the tube, you're already wet".

"I never expected it to be like this. I have tried white river rafting in Cagayan de Oro and Davao, but this one is different... you really get wet. It's awesome!" Durano said.

Secretary Durano was supposed to lunch with ATOP delegates at Gumasa, Glan but insisted that he visit Maitum instead to try the water tubing experience here. "My brother kept on telling me to visit Maitum since the experience here is different from the other resorts in the country," Durano said.

The sport is a 45-minute ride aboard a salbabida (inflated tire tube) past breathtaking drops, between huge boulders and amid green scenery along Pangi River 's rapids.

"Bohol has its Chocolate Hills and Sarangani has its Whitewater River Tubing. I invite you all to try it!" Durano later told delegates at the Association of Tourism Officers of the Philippines (ATOP) convention's closing ceremony in General Santos City.

Durano had also stopped over South Point Divers, one of Mindanao 's premiere dive spots located in Lemlunay, Maasim to meet with private sector representatives and discussed the prevalent issues with regards to local tourism.

Durano cited the importance of tourism officers in overseeing tourism projects in the local level. "They (tourism officers) are our connections in tourism development all over the country.

That is why under this new tourism law, the position of the tourism officer will be a permanent position within the local government units giving them security of tenure," Durano said. "We just finished the draft of the new tourism law and going to have consultations around the country and will be implemented by the end of November." (Sarangani Info. Office) [top]

The COA Annual Report on General Santos City for 2008 has been released! According to the executive summary, the income of the city for the fiscal year 2008 has reached 1BILLION Pesos...
The actual income of GENSAN for 2008 is now P1,005,912,377.66 from P892,530,170.71 registered in 2007.... An increase of P113,382,206.95 or 12.70 % increase in just 1 year

last year 1.089B ang total revenue ng BIR, this year as of sept. 1.2B na ang total collection and meron pang 3 months to increase it! WHOA!
