Dionesia Pacquiao and Presidentiables’ funny pictures!

Here are some of the latest Dionesia Pacquiao funny pictures which Bariles got through his email. These are now circulating in the Internet and hopefully, he could get the name of its creator.

Anyway, to whoever created these PHOTOSHOPPED spoofs featuring not only of Manny Pacquiao’s famous mom Dionesia but also of other Pinoy politicians/Presidentiable who are currently very much in the news, GenSan News Online Mag would like to congratulate you for putting smiles on our faces despite the current catastrophes the country have encountered very recently.

So, without much further ado, here are the funny pictures… beginning with the Pacmom, Mommy Dionesia Pacquiao!

http://i813.photobucket.com/albums/zz52/fmdear/3992595762_23eb551025_o.jpg
"Mommy Dionesia Pacquiao's funny picture, a take on the ABS-CBN early evening teleserye, KATORSE. She looks lovely here."

Now, here is the second Mommy Dionesia Pacquiao’s funny picture, a spoof on the movie, “Time Traveller’s Wife“.

http://i813.photobucket.com/albums/zz52/fmdear/3992595606_5ebb24e680_o.jpg
"Another Mommy Dionesia Pacquiao Funny Picture based on the poster for the movie, The Time Traveller's Wife. This time she has been transformed into the Dance Instructor's Wife."

The next funny picture is a spoof on the recent blockbuster concert of the two singing greats, Martin Nievera and Gary Valenciano, “As ONe“. This time, it features, Presidentiable Noynoy Aquino and running mate for the 2010 National Elections, Mar Roxas.

"A spoof on the poster of AS ONE, Martin Nievera and Gary Valenciano's recent concert featuring the Noynoy-Mar Tandem."

Down below is the “Boys Over Flowers” spoof this time with the other Presidentiables Erap, Chiz Escudero, Manny Villar and Gilbert Teodoro with the lone lady Loren Legarda, taking over the characters of the hit Korean telenovela.

Boys over Flower, becomes Boys Over Loren in this spoof with Presidentiables Erap, Chiz, Manny, Gilbert and Loren.

Now here is a funny picture of Vice President Noli de Castro, the “undecided” presidentiable who has refused to entertain invitation feelers from the LAKAS-KAMPI CMD Party…

http://i813.photobucket.com/albums/zz52/fmdear/3992595686_3809092a4f_o.jpg
"Undecided Presidentiable Noli de Castro in this spoof on Indiana Jones."

And finally, a send-up on the movie “Twilight” with the possible Chiz Escudero and Loren Legarda tandem for the NP Party.

"A Twilight spoof with Chiz Escudero and Loren Legarda, their possible team-up for the NP Party highlighted here."

These pictures again show the Pinoy’s love for spoofs and say so much about how he handles the seemingly endless problems that the country is facing – - with humor and laughter.

Again, to the creator of these funny pictures, maraming salamat sa muli ninyong pagpapatawa sa amin.

AIM study shows Zamboanga City lagging behind cities in Mindanao Posted by Riza Lacbao in Top Headlines
Friday, October 9. 2009

by Hader Glang

Zamboanga City has once again failed to register an impressive competitive performance record in the Philippine Cities Competitiveness Ranking Project (PCCRP), Insurance man Efren “Bong” Ramos disclosed yesterday.

In the latest PCCRP survey conducted in 2007, Mr. Ramos said Zamboanga City ranked No. 19 among the 22 mid-sized cities in the entire country and lagging behind all the mid-sized cities in Mindanao.

The City is lagging behind the cities (Mindanao) of General Santos (Rank 2), Tagum (Rank 6), Butuan (Rank 10), Cagayan de Oro (Rank 12), Iligan (Rank 15). Olongapo City ranked No. 1 among mid-sized cities in the country.

With this development, Mr. Ramos criticized Mayor Celso Lobregat for the failure of his administration to make the City of Zamboanga top in the country’s competitive cities.

PCCRP survey is a flagship research undertaking by the Asian Institute of Management (AIM) Policy Center’s City Competitive Program.

For Zamboanga City to move forward and gain recognition from investors, it must learn how to compete with other mid-sized cities in Mindanao and introduce and implement projects which will directly contribute to the competitiveness and economic growth of Zamboanga City,” said Mr. Ramos.

He added that it is best for the people of Zamboanga to know where the city government leaders are succeeding and failing. “Managing City Hall requires a lot of vision and know how.”

Based on the PCCRP survey, Zamboanga City registered above average score of 6.53 ranking No. 3 in Mindanao under one driver of competitiveness which is quality of life, where the relevant aspects are peace and order, quality of living, environment, social welfare of the people and quality of living environment and other local amenities.

Tagum City registered the highest score of 8.57, General Santos City with a score of 6.99, Butuan City with a 6.24, Cagayan de Oro City with a score of 6.24, and Iligan City with a score of 6.27.

In Dynamism of the Local Economy, Zamboanga City again registered poorly in the entire country with a score of 3.37 while Tagum City got 3.62, Iligan City (4.04), Butuan City (4.38), Cagayan de Oro (4.60),and General Santos City (4.90). A vibrant local economy is fundamental in attracting inward investments, generating income and fostering the attractiveness of a city.

AIM’s PCCRP Project measures the competitiveness ofcities by analyzing relevant indicators of local economic and political systems and the capability of cities to provide an environment that nurtures dynamism of its local enterprises and prosperity of its residents.

The project formulates a process and tachnology with which the development strides of cities can be regularly monitored and evaluated. Moreover, it constructs benchmarking method that will aid individual cities in measuring their level of competitiveness in relation to other cities.

The study ranks the overall competitiveness of Philippine urban centers based on the following drivers of competitiveness: dynamism of the local economy, human resourcesand training, infrastructure, responsivenessof the local government to business sector’s needs and quality of life, and costs of doing business.

AIM’s PPCRP policy objective for conducting the study is to encourage local government leaders to understand that with the decentralization espoused by the Local Government Code, their roles must shiftfrom being mere service providers to becoming economic and development managers.

The study also aims to develop a model that encourages healthy competition among leading and emerging urban centers and to emphasize the role of smalland medium enterprises as the backbone of city development.

The result of the next survey is expected to be out on 2010. (Hader Glang)

We'll see the development pag natapos na ang expansion and renovation ng airport! Kung tutuusin yung 121 Million Fund for GENSAN Airport ay mas maliit compared to other Airports funded for expansion and renovation! Ang BUTUAN Airport parang 700M ang Pondo! We've seen the slow progress or even regression of the city (Zero growth or even negative growth) in the early years of the decade 2000 - 05 due to negative publicity attributed to the city due to various incidents of bombings! however, things seemed to change after 2006, naging peaceful na ulit ang GENSAN (Infact one of the peaceful cities in the philippines, internally) and ngayong marami ng investments pumapasok sa GENSAN gaya ng ROB at SM, Sana maging Tuloy2 na ito in order for the city to really realize its once dream of becoming the "BOOM CITY OF THE SOUTHERN PHILIPPINES."

Di na maliit yung budget for our airport...

Isuzu’s 3rd Mindanao branch undergoing construction in GenSan!

At first it was only Mitsubishi Philippines and Honda Cars hugging the limelight in General Santos, being the only sales and service centers of major car manufacturers in the city. Franchised by the Regollo Family, and the Ced Family respectively, their GenSan branches were their Japanese franchisors’ top dealerships in the Philippines for more than a couple of years owing to the warm patronage of the people of South Central Mindanao or Region XII.

For the rest of the owners of other car brands in the Tuna Capital, they would have to drive their vehicles to Davao City 150 kms away if they want them serviced by their respective official service centers located there. Or if they want to purchase vehicles other than the Mitsubishi and Honda brands, then the Durian Capital is the nearest place to visit.

Finally in October 2007, to answer the clamor from its numerous clients and prospective customers, Hyundai Philippines decided to construct and open their own along the National Highway a few meters away from Mitsubishi GenSan. No less than GenSan Mayor Jun Acharon led the inauguration of the new Hyundai Sales and Service Center-General Santos!

http://i813.photobucket.com/albums/zz52/fmdear/4001076443_3a855c692e_o.jpg
"GenSan City Mayor Jun Acharon address the inauguration of Hyundai Phils-GenSan on October 2007."

Then, a few months later, in May 2, 2008, due also to the city’s burgeoning population, it was the turn of Toyota Motors Philippines to open its franchise outlet along the same strip at the National Highway of General Santos. This time, its Davao dealer, Mr. Jose Lim also took up the reins of handling the dealership in GenSan, which he says is a project benefiting not only the city but the whole of Region 12.

This new investment totalled P120 million pesos and employed almost a hundred local hires. During its inaugural program, Mayor Jun Acharon thanked the Toyota bigwigs who were present at that time including Toyota Motor Phils. President, Mr. Hiroshi Ito, and Toyota Dealers Association the Phils. President Mr. Francis Castillo Laurel.

"This time, Mayor Acharon keynotes the Inaugural Dinner for the new Toyota GenSan on May 2008."

And now, more than a year after that, here is another car dealership whose owners have again acknowledged the soundness of investing in General Santos City and have joined the bandwagon of large multinationals which have settled here including Toyota, Hyundai, the just-opened Robinsons Mall, SM Malls and many more.

Welcome to GenSan, Isuzu Philippines Corporation through its franchise, Isuzu MTL GenSan Motors, Inc.

Here are photos of the Isuzu building which is now undergoing construction at its location along the National Highway in Barangay Apopong, a few meters before reaching Forest Lake San Carlos.

GenSan allots P21M for new traffic light systems

GENERAL SANTOS CITY (PNA) – The city government here plans to install at least two more traffic light systems along the city’s commercial district to help ease its worsening traffic problem.

Engr. Riza Paches, project development officer of the city planning and development office (CPDO), said the local government is now working for the purchase of additional new traffic light systems that will mainly be utilized to decongest traffic along the city’s emerging shopping mall district.

The two additional traffic light systems, which will reportedly cost P21 million, will increase the city’s automated traffic facilities to eight.

Last week, the CPDO noted an increase of almost 200 percent on the regular traffic at a portion of the national highway and Jose Catolico Avenue in Barangay Lagao here due to the opening of a new shopping mall in the area.

The newly-opened Robinson's Place-General Santos, which is so far the city biggest mall complex, is located near the city’s two other existing shopping malls – the KCC Mall of GenSan and the Gaisano Mall.

Paches said a traffic light system was earlier set up at the junction of the national highway and the Jose Catolico Avenue but it reportedly experienced difficulty in coping with the increasing traffic toward the new mall area.

She said the system also suffered some minor aberrations last week due to the failure of most motorists to properly follow the traffic light’s signals.

“The system gave out an abnormal reaction to the traffic flow because of some motorists were not following its signals,” she said.

Paches explained that the traffic light system was programmed to function to a maximum three-minute cycle and any aberration, such as traffic light beating and slow traffic movement, will cause some confusion to it.

“The system vehicle or motion activated so it reads and sets its functions to the movement of the vehicles,” she said.

To help solve the problem, she said they are planning to install an additional traffic light system along the Bula-Lagao that traverses the new Robinson's mall and at the Makar-Labangal junction.

She said they will also supplement it with two additional traffic enforcers who will mainly be tasked to ensure steady traffic flow at congested junctions.

“We want our motorists and pedestrians to follow the authority of these traffic lights because they were set to ensure their safety and establish orderly traffic,” Paches added. (PNA)

Nung October 2006 Airbus A319 lang ginamit nila to GenSan, few months time upgraded na to A320.... Feedback from Manila Airport Services Dept ng Cebu Pacific, nung time na 1 flight lang GenSan lagi daw overbook or halos araw2x daw....

Chowking opening across Jollibee-GenSan Highway

http://i813.photobucket.com/albums/zz52/fmdear/4003734295_40223239b8.jpg

For people in General Santos City and the outlying areas who love Chinese Food, here is a piece of good news!

Chowking, the #1 Chinese Fastfood Restaurant chain in the country is set to open its second branch in General Santos City to augment its first one at the KCC Mall of GenSan!

The new Chowking which will be a stand-alone branch will be housed at the Yap property now being constructed beside the Land Bank Branch Building along the National Highway. It is right across the 24-hour Jollibee outlet of the Teng Family.

The restaurant is reportedly company-owned and it will just be leasing the area provided by the Yaps. There is no word yet on whether it will operated on a 24-hour basis just like its neighbor across the road but Bariles feels that it should.

Traffic along the National Highway is on a 24/7 roll and if the Jollibee outlet there was able to survive, then the owners of Chowking should not have any worries.

And besides, they should just take into consideration the proliferation of lugawan and arros caldohan eateries in these areas to realize that nocturnal businesses offering piping hot dishes could survive in these parts.

http://i813.photobucket.com/albums/zz52/fmdear/4004497122_4429613c6a_b.jpg
"Chowking Highway GenSan Branch undergoing construction!"

Bariles who took the photo of the construction above, observed that the building stands perpendicular to the National Highway, owing to the limited size of the property. This means that the only way for cars to get in is to enter from the right side of the highway, facing west. Problem is, this is right in the center of the junction where the traffic light signal system is situated.

This could prove to be a major bottleneck in the area.

However, Bariles still believes that there is nothing that could not be solved through dialogues between the Chowking owners and the local government who handles traffic matters. What should be first and foremost in the minds of both parties is to come up with a win-win solution redounding to the benefit of the people of GenSan, both investors and the buying public alike.

And all these are for the continued development of the Tuna Capital! (nosebleed)

Wildcats reach zonals

Holy Trinity College General Santos City defeated Ateneo de Davao, 96-86, recently to earn the right to represent Mindanao in the 2009 Philippine Collegiate Championship.

The HTC Wildcats advanced into the zonal qualifying games in Cebu City set Nov. 4-8.

The Mindanao champions earlier disposed of Southern City College of Zamboanga and Cagayan de Oro in the PLDT and Smart-backed tournament held at Gaisano gym in Davao City.

The COC Scorpions had to earlier forfeit an earlier win for fielding two players that were not part of their lineup during their ''mother league'' tournament in Cagayan de Oro.

Jun Cua, PCCL representative and Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP) official in Davao, cited the league violation that cost the Scorpions a trip to Cebu.

The Cebu Zonal games will have eight teams competing.

Aside from the Wildcats, the teams are the San Sebastian College-Recoletos Cavite Baycats (NAASCU champion), Adamson University Falcons (UAAP fifth placer), Arellano University Chiefs (NCAA fifth placer), the Visayas regional champion and the second to fourth placers of CESAFI.

The top four teams in the Cebu zonal games will join the ''Sweet 16'' Finals.

Already seeded to the ''Sweet 16'' are the Ateneo Blue Eagles, University of the East Red Warriors, Far Eastern University Tamaraws, UST Growling Tigers, San Sebastian College-Recoletos Stags, San Beda Red Lions, JRU Heavy Bombers, and the Colegio de San Juan de Letran Knights.

RP least competitive in AsiaPac

92 million population putting pressure on limited resources

MANILA - A huge population of 92.2 million coupled with poor infrastructure have pushed the Philippines to the bottom of competitiveness ranking among peers in the Asia Pacific region, experts said on Tuesday.

At the launch the 2009 World Competitiveness Yearbook, experts singled out the Philippines' population growth for putting pressure on the country's scarce resources.

The survey, which was conducted by Swiss-based International Institute for Management Development, also noted poor infrastructure, specifically for distribution and water transport, for contributing to the Philippines’ dismal ranking. The Philippines ranked 43rd out of 57 economies, and last among 13 countries in the Asia-Pacific region. The rankings used 4 criteria: economic performance, government efficiency, business efficiency, and infrastructure. Each criterion has sub-factors. The Philippines ranked 51st in economic performance, 42nd in government efficiency, 32nd in business efficiency, and 56th in infrastructure.

Bigger challenge

“We have a bigger challenge [to become more competitive] because of our huge population,” said former Trade and Industry Secretary Cesar Bautista, who co-chairs the National Competitiveness Council. Bautista said the big population has become a problem since the resources of the country is “finite.” Ma. Lourdes Sereno, executive director of the Asian Institute of Management Policy Center, said that the unmanaged population growth, along with high poverty incidence and high unemployment, dragged down the ranking of the Philippines in some of the indicators measured by WCY. “We have common contributory negative factors in all competitiveness indicators and number one is ummanaged population growth,” Sereno said. Sereno said the Philippines ranked very low in the rankings because the country’s huge population factored in some of the indicators, like school enrolment, pupil-teacher ratio, unemployment, and dependency ratio. “The fact that we have a big population will bring down our competitiveness,” said Meneleo Carlos Jr., chair of the Federation of Philippine Industries. “Our infrastructure, including our education, is already overloaded now.” 12th most populous

The latest census showed that there are 88.57 Filipinos as of August 2007. The country’s population grew by 2.04% from 2000 to 2007. The National Statistics Office projects that the population will reach 92.23 million this year. Currently, the Philippines is the 12th most populous country in the world. It is the second most populous country in Southeast Asia, behind Indonesia with 229 million inhabitants. The rankings in the WCY showed that the Philippines: has the second worst pupil-teacher ratio in primary schools next only to India, which has a population of more than P1 billion

the worst pupil-teacher ratio in secondary education among Asian countries.

has the worst secondary school enrolment rate among the Asian countries in 2006, along with Indonesia,

second to the last in Asia when it comes to labor productivity. It tied with Indonesia.

has the highest Youth unemployment rate among the Asian countries, with the possible exception of India.

has the worst dependency ratio in Asia.

OFW phenomenon

“This explains the OFW (overseas Filipino workers) phenomenon. In order to support too many people, you have to be an OFW, because your salary in the Philippines cannot support three or four people,” Sereno said, referring to the high dependency ratio in the country. “If we don’t have low ranks in these several indicators, maybe our competitiveness ranking won’t slip,” she said. “If we do not address that (unmanaged population), we cannot see improvements in some of these indicators.” A reproductive health bill that seeks to provide free access to artificial family planning methods has been pending in Congress for years and is facing strong opposition from the Catholic Church and groups that interpret some of its provisions as promoting abortion and irresponsible sex. Politicians, meanwhile, avoid discussing the legislation because they are afraid of antagonizing the Catholic Church, which is perceived to have influence on the voters. Tuesday’s forum launched an advocacy project of the University of the Philippines Open University and the United Kingdom on improving competitiveness in the Philippines. (Newsbreak)

Mining plant to rise in South CotabatoBy Bong S. Sarmiento

KORONADAL CITY -- A foreign-backed firm is upgrading an old facility in T'boli, South Cotabato for metallurgical test purposes in line with the efforts to start the initial non-commercial production phase of gold and silver deposits, a top company official yesterday said.

Edgar D. Martinez, Tribal Mining Corp. president, said the rehabilitation of an old plant within the town proper is underway for the test production phase to gain ground.

"We're utilizing the old plant because it has an existing ECC [environmental compliance certificate] while the company at the same time continue seeking a larger ECC for a plant that shall be put up at the mines development site in [the village of] Kematu," he said.

Tribal Mining Corp., which is backed by Canadian exploration firm Cadan Resources Corp, acquired a Mineral Production Sharing Agreement covering 85 hectares in 1997. It has a term of 25 years.

Martinez said that due to a problem with small-scale mining operators in the area, the company will likely go into commercial production stage next year, also taking into account the permitting process period for its larger ECC.

The firm is late by about two months in blasting activity schedule to advance its mineralized tunnel systems due to the resumption of operations by small scale mining operators, he lamented.

South Cotabato Governor Daisy P. Avance Fuentes has allowed the small-scale miners to resume their activities after banning them for about nine months at the so-called "people's mining site" straddling 21 hectares.

The people's mining site is within Tribal Mining's MPSA territory.

Tribal Mining and the small-scale mining operators have yet to agree on the blasting schedule of the former, a dispute that has already reached the local court, Martinez said.

The mining executive said the company will use the facility in the town’s poblacion area for four to six months for its test production phase.

The facility was previously used by small scale miners with its ECC issued to Dibu S. Tuan, currently a member of the board of directors of Tribal Mining.

Tuan and Tribal Mining forged a contract for the latter to use the old facility, Martinez said.

Over the weekend, Brett Taylor, Cadan Resources chief executive officer, announced it has started the construction of six carbon-in-leach tanks and associated plant equipment with a capacity of up to 300 tons per day.

Preliminary civil works started last month and major works are to begin this month once China-made mining equipment arrives in the town, he said.

Cadan Resources recently purchased new jaw and cone crushers, ballmill, gravity circuit, spares and ancillary equipment from Zhengzhou Zhongding Heavy Duty Machine Manufacturing Co Ltd.

This development continues Cadan's progress of becoming a gold-silver producer, Taylor noted.

Based on current development costs, the company estimates a production cost range cost between US$ 250-350 per ounce of gold.

The T'boli project has deposits of 2.4 million tons, containing 420,000 ounces of gold and 1.6 million ounces of silver, Cadan Resource said earlier. Excavation of deposits will employ underground or tunneling method.

Photos of Robinsons GenSan Grand Opening

"..Lance Gokongwei specified "GenSan's population", "its being the crossroads and trading center of Soccsksargen" and "an enlightened political leadership" as their reasons for coming to GenSan.."

The Grand Opening of Robinsons Place GenSan on October 5, 2009 should be one of the most anticipated events in the history of the Tuna Capital. This is judging from the countless comments that we got here in every blog post that we published about the mall and from the various forums, news articles, blog write-ups which tackled the issue prior to its inauguration.

Being his biggest mall project in Mindanao, JG Summit’s Chairman of the Board John Gokongwei’s children, Lance (President of JG Summit Holdings) and Robina Pe, were present for the Opening Program, together with what must have been all their board officers and members.

When asked by ABS-CBN news reporter Jay Dayupay on their reasons for putting up a mall here, Mr. Lance Gokongwei specified three things: GenSan’s population, its being the “crossroads and trading center of Soccsksargen“, and “a very enlightened political leadership“.

These were corroborated by Robinsons Land Corporations COO and General Manager Frederick Go and Commercial Center Division President Cornelio Mapa, who revealed that the property on which the mall stands was bought 15 years ago.

Of course, GenSan City local officials headed by Mayor Jun Acharon and Congresswoman Darlene Antonino-Custodio were there to personally welcome and thank the city’s biggest investors. They were joined by GenSan celebrities like Dionisia Paccquiao and daughter-in-law Jinkee who were most sought after for photo ops among guests from Manila.

The Pacquiaos opened a franchise of BluGre Coffee in the mall plus their very own Team Pacquiao Novelty Shop.

Ably emceeing the program was ABS-CBN host Donita Rose while Christian Bautista provided the kilig factor with his rendition of a couple of songs. Congressional spouse Ms. Dawn Zulueta-Lagdameo, image model of Robinsons Department Store was also there with her son, adding glamour to the event.

Here then are the Robinsons GenSan Grand Opening exclusive photos shot by Bariles himself.

Sunlab, the Havaianas Store plus more in Robinsons GenSan

"Havaianas have a patented rubber formula as secret as the recipe for Coca Cola. Unlike other slippers, Havaianas are made from 100% rubber, making them extremely comfortable and they last much longer than an average pair of flip-flops."

SUNLAB, a local Fashion Hub that houses the country’s most hip cult fashion brands with a strong street following, has just opened in Robinson’s Place, General Santos City. It is jointly owned by a young and pretty “general” Tisha Ang and her equally pretty friend, Davaoena Marga Nograles-Montemayor.

This Lifestyle HUB (which also has a branch in Davao) houses a line up of T-shirts, loungewear, bags and accessories that complement the famed Brazilian Flip Flop brand – HAVAIANAS. These statement products are must-have items often seen on Hollywood and Pinoy Celebrities and many fashion magazines.

"Sunlab's Havaianas Display inside its Robinsons outlet"

Leading the brand pack is no less that the “Best Rubber Flip Flops in the World” – HAVAIANAS. HAVAIANAS is Portugese for a word that is symbolic to the relaxed “hang loose” island culture that inspired the Brazilian designers way back in the 1960’s.

Since their introduction over 40 years ago, at least 2.4 billion pairs of Havaianas have been produced—enough to encircle the globe 50 times if lined up heel to toe. The flip-flops are now available throughout the United States, Europe, South America, Australia and Asia.

Havaianas have a patented rubber formula as secret as the recipe for Coca Cola. Unlike other slippers, Havaianas are made from 100% rubber, making them extremely comfortable and they last much longer than an average pair of flip-flops. They are manufactured in only one factory in Brazil. The same company that markets the brand owns the plant where all Havaianas are produced, ensuring rigid quality control.

Below is a photo of a famous Pinay who goes for the brand.

Aside from Havaianas, Sun Lab also distributes local award winning brands such as The Tshirt Project Tshirts (a Philippine-based design company that offers fresh and unique concepts on printed tshirts carried –out through the various brands under its arm).

It also carries Team Manila Tshirts & Accessories (a graphic design company that has built an impressive portfolio of award-winning works in broadcast and print design), Twix and Soak Bikinis, FYH, Therapy and Fashion Monster Bags (Chic, stylish and versatile bags) and Bubblegum & Kathang Kamay Accessories.

"Local branded shirts designed by multi-awarded artists are also part of SunLab's merchandise."

Most of these local labels are multi awarded brands, recognized by the likes of MTV awards, The Philippine Daily Inquirer’s Super awards, Entrepreneur of the Year awards, and more.

Bariles especially loves BRANDED’s reproductions of iconic images from the vintage 70s like VST and Company, Rico J. Puno, Juan dela Cruz Band, Sarao Jeeps, Tito-Vic-and-Joey, and even candies like White Rabbit and Kendi Mint .

Too bad, when he visited the store, he couldn’t find any of his Idol, Nora Aunor shirt though.

When he last checked yesterday, still nada. Hmmmm… it must be that popular.

By the way, Sunlab is the Exclusive Sub Distributor in South East Mindanao of ALL that brands that they carry.

NDDU can now accept foreigners – Bureau of Immigration

From Notre Dame of Dadiangas University Alumni Affairs Coordinator, the hardworking Reuben Tugari, GenSan News Online received a piece of wonderful news!

After being granted Autonomous Status until 2014 by the Committee on Higher Education, which Bariles blogged about in an earlier post, the premier Catholic university in General Santos City has just been accredited by the Bureau of Immigration to accept for admission, foreign students.

http://i813.photobucket.com/albums/zz52/fmdear/4021657156_1b9c002925_o.jpg

This was contained in a memorandum from the Bureau of Immigration Commissioner Marcelino Libanan dated August 7, 2009 to petitioner Notre Dame of Dadiangas University, with address at Marist Avenue, General Santos City.

Read the scanned memo below…

http://i813.photobucket.com/albums/zz52/fmdear/4021544600_7f4de6f859_b.jpg
The letter from Bureau of Immigration allowing NDDU to accept foreign students."

Bariles did not know that a university should at first be included in the list of BI-accredited schools for it to accept non-immigrant student before it can do so. NDDU’s request for inclusion must be because of the much-improved security in GenSan and elsewhere in the region, with its Board of Directors expecting an increase of foreign students seeking affordable yet quality education.

Well, here’s hoping that with this development, we’ll be seeing more and more foreign expats who would realize that General Santos City offers not only export quality tuna but also boasts of exceptional educational institutions like the Notre Dame of Dadiangas University.

AMEN.

General Santos City: Gearing up for Kalilangan 2010

http://i813.photobucket.com/albums/zz52/fmdear/n616746137_2414846_2193.jpg

After a successful run of Gensan’s Tuna Festival, the City Mayor sat down with us to discuss his vision and concept for next year’s Kalilangan Festival. Gensan’s premier festival was recently awarded as the Best Cultural Festival by the Association of Tourism Officers of the Philippines during the ATOP Summit last October 2-4, 2009. We are excited about the mayor’s plans and this early we’re gearing up for the grand celebration next year. Kalilangan 2010 will celebrate a decade of Peace, Prosperity and Progress. Watch out for updates.

SMI eyes power plant, port facilities in GenSan
by MindaNews
Sunday, 18 October 2009 21:34

GENERAL SANTOS CITY (MindaNews/18 October) -- Sagittarius Mines, Inc. plans to build a power plant and a port here for its Tampakan copper-gold project, it was learned on Sunday.
Bella D. Lechonsito, Sagittarius superintendent for stakeholder engagement and partnership, said they are currently undertaking studies to choose a site for facilities required to support the operation of the Tampakan project.

In a letter to Mayor Pedro B. Acharon, Jr., Lechonsito said the port facility will allow the company to export its mineral concentrates and to import fuel for the power plant.
Lechonsito did not say in her letter whether the power plant will be fired by oil or by coal.

Sagittarius proposed the power plant to be located in the villages of Fatima and Sinawal, the letter said.

Dubbed the “Tuna Capital of the Philippines, this city hosts sea and air ports, making it the premier gateway to Region 12 (Southwestern Mindanao).

From the city to Tampakan, South Cotabato, the transmission line will run approximately 65 kilometers if the company decides to put up the power plant here.

Critics earlier claimed that Sagittarius would source power from the Alcantara-led Conal Holdings Corp., which is planning to build up a 200-megawatt coal-fired power plant in Maasim, Sarangani worth $450 million.

Sister Susan O. Bolanio, spokesperson of Socsksargen Climate Action Now, earlier raised suspicions that Sagittarius will source some of its power requirements from Conal.

Conal and Sagittarius have one thing in common, the interlocking business interest of Alsons Corp.

Alsons has 3.27% interest at Sagittarius, which is controlled by Xstrata Copper through its 62.5% stake. The other junior partner in the Tampakan project is Australian firm Indophil Resources NL, which owns 34.23% of the project.

At Conal Holdings, Alsons has the 60% controlling interest in the coal plant venture. The rest is held by the Electricity Generating Public Co. Ltd., Thailand’s largest power producer.

Sagittarius is already in the final feasibility stage costing $74 million targeted for completion by the first half of 2010. The company hopes to go into commercial stream by 2016.

Lechonsito said Sagittarius and Conal are not discussing power supply deals.

But the company is considering to avail of power supply from independent power producers, at the same time pointing out that building a company-owned power plant is also an option.

Other possible sites for the company’s power plant are in Malita, Davao del Sur and in Davao City, Lechonsito said. (MindaNews)

Gov’t looking to soon ink P8B in biofuel investments

THE GOVERNMENT could sign agreements next month in South Korea for the establishment of two biofuel plants worth P4 billion each.

A biodiesel plant that will use jatropha as feedstock will be set up in General Santos City while a bioethanol plant using sugarcane will rise in Tarlac, said Marriz B. Agbon, president of the Philippine Agricultural Development and Commercial Corporation which is the marketing arm of the Agriculture department.

"We are targetting that (the agreement signings) around the visit of the president to Korea in May," she told reporters yesterday.

Sugar Regulatory Administration chief Rafael L. Coscolluela confirmed the plan, saying in a telephone interview "We hope that the actual investment would start shortly after the signing,"

Ms. Agbon declined to disclose the names of investors and their local partners, but said the Tarlac plant, with a capacity of 500,000 liters per day, would be the biggest producer in the country.

Personal spending grows fastest in N. Mindanao

PERSONAL CONSUMPTION Expenditure (PCE) grew fastest last year in Region X, or Northern Mindanao, among the country’s 17 regions, the National Statistical Coordination Board said in a statement yesterday.

But the National Capital Region (NCR), or Metro Manila, still accounted for bulk of such spending, followed by the adjacent Region III, or Central Luzon, and Region IV-A, or the Cavite-Laguna-Batangas-Rizal-Quezon (Calabarzon) area.

Specifically, Northern Mindanao’s PCE grew 6% last year, followed closely by NCR with 5.7%, as well as Calabarzon, Region IV-B (composed of Marinduque, Palawan, Puerto Princesa City, Romblon, as well as Occidental and Oriental Mindoro, or Mimaropa), and Region XII (composed of South Cotabato, Cotabato, Sultan Kudarat, Sarangani, General Santos City, or Soccsksargen) each posting 5.4% growth.

Personal consumption in the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (ARMM), one of the country’s poorest regions, grew slowest at 2.3%.

5 Mindanao schools among Sweep finalists

FIVE universities based in Mindanao made it to finals of Smart Communication Inc.'s (Smart) 6th Sweep Innovation and Excellence Awards.

Engineering students from 20 top colleges and universities across the country have submitted a total of 90 wireless applications in response to Smart's challenge to create solutions following the theme of the 6th Sweep Innovation and Excellence Awards, "Empowering Communities through Wireless Technologies."

From these entries, 10 have been selected to advance into the finals scheduled on February 5 and 6 next year at the A. Venue Hall in Makati City.

The teams that made it to the finals are from Mindanao State University in General Santos City, Ateneo de Davao University, Ateneo de Manila University, Ateneo de Zamboanga University, University of St. La Salle-Bacolod, Notre Dame of Marbel University in Koronadal City in South Cotabato, Holy Name University and Batangas State University.

Short-listing of the entries was undertaken by a team of experts from Smart together with Arlene Romasanta, Senior Science Research Specialist at the PCIERD (Philippine Council for Industry and Energy Research and Development)-Department of Science & Technology; and Brian Quebengco, founder and Chief Inoventor of Inovent Inc. who teaches Innovation Technology & Entrepreneurial Psychology at the De La Salle University Business Management College.
......
Some entries promote the growth of livelihood projects and community businesses. One entry fosters the growth of cooperatives by allowing them to post their products on the web via SMS (Ateneo de Manila University). Another applies wireless technology and image processing in soil assessment to help farmers determine what crops are suitable for planting (Ateneo de Davao University).

There's also an application that notifies fisher folk if a sizable volume of fish is available for them to catch (Ateneo de Davao University).
......
In preparation for the 2010 elections, two teams who made it to the final round created applications to aid in the voting process. One helps locate the voter?s assigned precinct through SMS (Notre Dame of Marbel University) while another uses SMS as the medium for voting, ensuring that the registered voter only votes once (University of St. La Salle-Bacolod).

Other entries that made it to the 10 top are an SMS-based device that helps students maximize waiting time during the payment of tuition fees (Ateneo de Zamboanga University), an application that monitors water services (Holy Name University), and mobile home automation using Bluetooth (Mindanao State University).
.....
A total of 12 awards will be given to winning student teams from Smart Schools Program (SSP) partners that submitted the best web-based information and educational materials about their respective communities.

Mateo Road’s Aimican Ladies Dormitory

While everyone was focused on the opening of GenSan City’s newest mall and the guys over at the online forum, Skyscraper City were busy discussing the merits and demerits of the Tuna Capital’s traffic jams and traffic lights, a 3-story building was quietly inaugurated at Mateo Road, Lagao.

This is the 3-storey Aimican Ladies Dormitory which opened on August 8, 2009. It is by far General Santos City’s biggest dormitory.

http://i813.photobucket.com/albums/zz52/fmdear/3967942325_cb9db70b6a_b.jpg
"The newly-built Aimican Ladies Dormitory, ready for occupants."

There was only a new caretaker to ask from when Bariles dropped by one lazy Sunday afternoon. Being relatively new, she couldn’t offer any answer from the few questions the Fishman asked about the place though. She does not even know the number of rooms inside the building.

Luckily, Bariles saw this tarpauline indicating the rates of the rooms available for would-be-dormer

Luckily, Bariles saw this tarpauline indicating the rates of the rooms available for would-be-dormer
"The monthly rates for the occupants of Aimican Ladies Dormitory"

From what is indicated in this tarp, Aimican’s rates are very affordable. Consider these:

For a non-aircon room good for 6 persons, the monthly rental is only P1000 per head.
For a non-aircon room good for 2 persons, the monthly rental is P1,200 per head.
For an airconditioned room for 2 persons, the monthly rental is P4,000 for the whole room.
Each dormer is entitled to the free use of an ELECTRIC IRON.
Other electrical appliances will be charged a certain fee.
The entry of Aimican Ladies Dorm is good news for those parents who prefer a hotel or hospital-like setting for their children studying or working in GenSan. Besides, it’s situated near the KCC and Gaisano Malls although quite far from the city’s educational institutions.

Lest we forget, Aimican Ladies Dormitory is located a few meters down the road from Family Country Hotel and Convention Center.

Cocytus II, Paseo del Sol’s Halloween Party

With the advent of Halloween or the Feast of the Dead in less than two weeks time, some establishments in General Santos City have started sending out feelers with regard to their promotions and marketing gimmicks earmarked for those days.

http://i813.photobucket.com/albums/zz52/fmdear/4015512211_516b15bb9e_o.jpg
"The poster of Cocytus II"

One of them is Paseo del Sol, which in coordination with its newly-reinvented sister establishment, the Ranchero Grill and the Pablo’s Steaks and Crabs,is coming up with a dance party on the night of October 31, 2009 called Cocytus II (This night’s gonna be a good, good night!).

This is the second installment of their Halloween party which started last year.

Cocytus, which means “River of Lamentation” is a river in Greek Mythology’s “underworld“.

This time, in Cocytus II, R&B and Hiphop music all throughout the evening will be played out by DJ Zirk of Beatlab DJ Club. With an entrance fee of only P150, guests can avail of a free drink. And according to Marketing Manager Paolo Sunglao, ladies will be served FREE MARGARITAS!

Now that is really something to look forward to among our generals, don’t you think?

Halloween night’s gonna be a good, good night!

FINALLY THE MOST-AWAITED MALL IS NOW OPEN…

I thought it was only a rumor but finally, the so-called rumor transformed into a FACT!

The much-awaited mall has just landed here in highly-urbanized city and 13th fastest-growing city in the country. Robinsons Place Gensan in the newest mall attraction to all shopaholics. It comprises 7 junior tenants like Robinsons Department Store, Robinsons Supermarket, Robinsons Movieworld, Handyman Do-it Best Hardware, Quantum Amusement, Robinsons Appliance and Robinsons Foodcourt. Some of the tenants occupying the mall are from local and national brands like Jollibee, Aling Lucing Sisig, Rai Rai Ken, Dunkin Donuts, the Sun Shop, National Bookstore, and many more. This mall is the newest tourist attraction due to its exterior and interior designs of the mall. It also houses some of the famous local and national food chains and restaurants in the Al Fresco Dining Strip located at the side of the entrance of the mall and it will make the nightlife of the city alive because it will be opened until midnight.

On their soft opening on September 30, many people went to the mall to see the features of it and i was present during the soft opening. First, I noticed the spacious Activity Area of the mall and it feels like you’re entering in a big international airport. It comprises only a floor, there’s no 2nd floor or 3rd floor. I saw some of the famous brands occupying the mall and I noticed that the department store is just like in department store in Ermita. Also, they have organized supermarket and also just like in Robinsons Manila. The Movieworld of the mall also looks like you’re in the red carpet premiere of your own movie. [**naks naman. **]

Having Robinsons Place Gensan in the city is the sign of being a progressive and prosperous economy that we experienced right now. So far, there are 2 present malls in the city, the Gaisano and KCC Malls. Recently, KCC extended their mall and they opened their new North Wing. The North Wing occupies some of the famous boutiques like Folded and Hung, Crocs, Plains and Prints and soon-to-open Solo, Kashieca, Freeway and Fagioli. Also, the mall is preparing for the opening of its South Wing this year.

Due to the city’s big economy and being a populous city, the SM Prime expresses their thoughts to put a mall in the city and expected to begin their construction in December this year and expected to open on 2011 together with the SM North Lanang in Davao City.

NCCC opens 2 new Davao stores

DAVAO CITY—The NCCC chain of superstores would open on Wednesday two new stores in the city to strengthen its hold of the suburbs, even as it plans to put up malls in two other cities.

Aileen Gajo, administrator of the Public Relations Council of the NCCC Group of Companies, said the company would open its sixth branch near Landmark Subdivision along Km.13 in Panacan, north of downtown.

On the same day, it would also open its 14th HB1 (Health and Beauty 1, the outlet and express center of the NCCC), at the Wison Shopping Center in Magallanes Street.

The Panacan branch would have a store area of 3,000 square meters and located within a total land area of 66,000 sq m intended to serve Panacan, Sasa and other northern barangays of the city.

Although smaller compared with its malls in the downtown area, the Panacan branch would house all the supermarkets and other NCCC-affiliated stores, including the Breadfactory, Munccchies, Hardwaremaxx and other food tenants.

Plans for the compound include four more modular-type buildings with a commercial strip ideal for banks and restaurants, and areas for high-rise office spaces and a warehouse.

The opening of the two stores followed that of NCCC Calinan, about 30 kilometers north of downtown, on September 26. The Calinan branch has a leased area of 3,177 sq m housing also the NCCC Supermarket, NCCC Department Store and HB1. It is located across the Calinan public market.

The NCCC chain of shopping malls has embarked on an aggressive operation of supermarkets and groceries in key suburbs to bring its trademark affordable items to the communities in midsized stores that offer longer shopping hours.

The Lim family-owned chain of shopping malls said the expansion would include numerous NCCC HB1outlets, usually in small-sized lots of 1,000 sq m or 2,000 sq m. These outlets offer the pharmacy stores which convenience stores, their main competitors, have none.

Many of their HB1 outlets open as early as 7 a.m. and closes at 10 p.m.

Paricio Te, corporate planning manager and officer in charge of the human resource division of the NCCC, said in a previous interview that “there would be no limit yet as to the number of these HB1 outlets to be put up.”

“It really depends on the need, the request of the people in the areas, mostly because of consideration of transportation cost in going to the malls, and convenient shopping hours,” Te said. “What we are certain is that we would be putting up an HB1 outlet every quarter.”

The NCCC’s main stores are in the Main Magsaysay, Mall-Davao, Mall Tagum, Mall Palawan and Centerpoint-Matina Crossing.

Te said the NCCC has also eyed expanding to nearby cities, including Digos City in Davao del Sur and General Santos City, although in the latter, the company would still take a “wait-and-see attitude” to determine how General Santos City residents would be able to respond to the opening of Robinsons and SM malls.

3 wins for GenSan News Online Mag at Philippine Blog Awards!

The unexpected happened on Saturday, October 24, 2009 at the 2009 Philippine Blog Awards Awarding Ceremony, the concluding activity of the 3rd Mindanao Bloggers Summit at the Pearlmont Hotel, along Limketkai Drive in Cagayan de Oro City.

http://i813.photobucket.com/albums/zz52/fmdear/4030455457_19f10a91fd.jpg

Most of GenSan News Online Mag’s readers know that this blog has been nominated in the CHIKKA Readers’ Choice Award for Mindanao of the PBA and there was less than 5 days for people to vote for it via Text Messaging.

With that limited time, Bariles was able to post an article about it, and put the link on his Facebook, Plurk, Twitter, Multiply and Friendster accounts. He informed his friends via email and notified his yahoogroups Notre Dame Highschool 1978 and the GenSan Generals in the Middle East . He also wrote to his Google Groups GenSan Camera Club, the Soccsksargen Bloggers Group and the Mindanao Bloggers E-group.

Bariles believed that if people liked what he has done with GenSan News Online Mag, then surely they will show their appreciation with their text votes! He even coined the phrase, “A vote for Bariles is a vote for GenSan!” to drive home his point. And Bariles left it at that.

On Saturday evening, the night after the deadline of the text voting, Bariles went up the stage after Juned Sonico, of the Philippine Blog Awards announced to a jampacked hall of Pearlmont Hotel in Cagayan de Oro that due to an overwhelming lead in the text voting, GENSAN NEWS ONLINE MAG is the CHIKKA READERS’ CHOICE AWARDEE for Mindanao!!!

http://i813.photobucket.com/albums/zz52/fmdear/4045295277_e562c9b692_o.jpg
"Bariles (Kuya Avel Manansala) receiving the prize for GenSan News Online Mag's win as CHIKKA READERS' CHOICE AWARDEE from Philippine Blog Award's Juned Sonico."

Whoa! Bariles was holding back his tears when negotiating the short distance from his table to the stage. He was very proud, to say the least and felt vindicated for the almost two years of hard work on his blog about his beloved city. Looking out into the crowd, he beamed. He really beamed!

But that was not all. After a few minutes, Juned Sonico called the 10 names for the Globe Tatoo Digital Tribe Awardees for Mindanao, and yes, you are right! Bariles was again summoned up the stage to receive his SECOND AWARD! Other awardees were Oliver Robillo, ChiQ Montes, Migs Hipolito, Angel Abella, Jim Haw, Lyle Santos, Chattee, and others whose names and links will be added here later.

http://i813.photobucket.com/albums/zz52/fmdear/4045295417_9a7bcef6ef_o.jpg
"Bariles together with the 9 other recipients of the GLOBE TATOO Digital Tribe Award - Mindanao, Influencers and Movers of the Blogging Community."

Bariles was mega ecstatic over his double win and went back to his seat to relax and enjoy the rest of the evening. He was only about to warm his seat when the familiar announcement, “…and the award goes to “GENSAN NEWS ONLINE MAG” reverberated inside the hall again!!! This time, it is Google Philippines’ Aileen Apolo calling out the winner for the “BEST DESTINATION BLOG AWARD for Mindanao.“

http://i813.photobucket.com/albums/zz52/fmdear/4046039894_0a200658c8_o.jpg
"Bariles receiving his 3rd award, The Best Destination Blog in Mindanao, from his good friend and soon-to-blushing-bride, Google Philippines' Aileen Apolo."

When given the microphone to say something, Bariles was speechless. He would have wanted to share a wisecrack, say something witty or funny, being the natural comedian that he is but nothing came out. All he could muster, after suppressing the tears that he was holding back for quite sometime now, was the awkward shout, “PARA SA GENSAN!”, while waving his 3rd trophy.

And so with those unexpected wins, please allow Bariles to thank the following: (List to be updated later with links and additions… Sorry, hina na memory.)

COTABATO CITY, Philippines — A magnitude-5.6 quake struck in the southern Philippines on Tuesday morning, the United States Geological Survey reported.

The quake was recorded at 8:05 a.m. with the epicenter at 65 kilometers northwest of General Santos City.

It was also felt in the cities of Davao, Cotabato, and in Manila but no casualties or damages was reported. There was no tsunami alert either.

The Philippines sits on the Pacific "Ring of Fire" where continental plates collide causing frequent seismic and volcanic activity.

The worst earthquake in the country happened on August 16, 1976 after a tsunami caused by a quake killed between 5,000 and 8,000 people in the Moro Gulf region in southern Philippines.

anyways, there is a slight change of plans regarding the construction of sm lanang......

sm lanang will start construction around 2nd quarter of next year while sm gensan will start construction 1st quarter of next year.

opening of sm lanang will be last quarter of 2011 and opening of sm gensan will be 3rd quarter of 2011.

pero the good news is that sm city davao will start its expansion around 1st to 2nd quarter of next year. the expansion will be around 65k sqm, GLA. it is effectively going to be another mall connected to the old mall...

UST medical mission in Sarangani targets 1,000 patients
by Joy Sevilla
Philippine Information Agency

General Santos City (28 October) -- After a successful medical mission last year in Kiamba, Sarangani, the University of Sto. Tomas - Medical Mission Inc. (UST-MMI) missioners visited the province anew targeting to serve a thousand patients in a five-day free medical mission.General Santos City (28 October)

The team, composed of 75 specialists headed by Dr. Willy Olalia, was welcomed by Sarangani Governor Migs Dominguez, Kiamba Mayor Rom Falgui, and government officers and staff of Kiamba town during the team's arrival at the General Santos City International Airport on October 27.
Falgui said aside from the 75-person team, nine local doctors and nurses from Sarangani will assist in the free medical mission.

"Last year, the team was able to conduct 973 surgeries and we hope to surpass the number this year," Falgui said, adding that the doctors and nurses will stay in Kiamba Central School where the activity will be conducted.

The mayor said half of the fund for the conduct of the medical mission was sourced out from the provincial government, while the other half was provided by the municipality. It was learned that some big companies in the province have also supported the activity such as the Conal Holdings Corporation which donated P50,000.

"This mission is basically for Sarangani. Last year, people were very happy because we were able to help them. Instead of paying an amount for their operation, we provided it for free," Falgui said.

Meanwhile, Dr. Olalia shared that the UST-MMI missioners have been conducting free medical mission in the provinces since 1960s. He said this is the team's third time visit to Socsksargen.

"It's actually our third time now, first in Gensan and second in Kiamba last year," he said.

He claimed that the team has been prepared already for the activity and said that they will be setting up 14 major operating tables for the mission. (PIO Sarangani/PIA SarGen) [top]

GenSan’s 2008 income puts it in the Billionaires Club! Economy grows 12.7%!

General Santos City’s economy is really on a roll!

In the 2008 Annual Audit Report released by the Commission on Audit of the financial operations of the local government units, General Santos City had a total income of P1,005,912,377.66!

This makes the Tuna Capital of the Philippines a certified member of the Billionaires Club!

This is also 12.7% increase from previous year’s (2007) income of P892,530,170.71!

Check out this comparative analysis between the incomes of 2007 and 2008 below…

http://i813.photobucket.com/albums/zz52/fmdear/4034366194_98c1287c35_o.jpg
"Comparative INCOME ANALYSIS of GenSan in 2007 and 2008"

Out of this 2008 total income of GenSan (which includes the IRA – Internal Revenue Allotment from the National Government), expenditures amounted to the following:

Personal Services – ——————— ————– P 402,030,712.39
Maintenance and Operating Expenses - P 391,552,510.80
TOTAL EXPENDITURES - P 793,583, 223.19

Deducted from the Total Income for 2008, this leaves the city with a Net Operating Income of P212,329,154.47 in 2008.

According to City Administrator Marcelino Dospueblos, a portion of this will go to paying off ongoing Capital Projects which are part of “continuing appropriations.“ The other portions will be subject for appropriations for the succeeding years.

NOTE: “Continuing Appropriations” is money devoted to Infrastructures and Capital Items which have not yet been completed or have not yet been started.

Congratulations to General Santos City for continuing to grow, glow and go!
Kudos to the local government under Mayor Jun Acharon for steering the wheel towards making the city truly a Magandang GenSan!

APO Hiking Society Live in GenSan Concert!

Right on the heels of the smash hit concert of the Air Supply in General Santos City, comes a couple of events meant to end 2009 with a bang!

One of them is from a group which has withstood the test of time and is Bariles‘ personal favorite, having followed their career since he was in highschool. He has not seen them perform live yet and that is why he is very much excited for their concert billed as “APO Hiking Society Live in GenSan!”

http://i813.photobucket.com/albums/zz52/fmdear/4054841248_fc845d5e25_b.jpg
"The poster of the APO Hiking Society Live in GenSan Concert"

A project of McDale Productions, the same team who gave GenSan the riotous comedy concert, “POOH-K Laugh-Out-Loud” with Pooh and Kaye Brosas, the “APO Hiking Society Live in GenSan” will happen on November 21, 2009 at the General Santos Gym, Barangay Lagao, which incidentally is the biggest gymnasium in Mindanao, with a capacity of 8,000 people!

APO Hiking Society’s music has been reintroduced to the younger generation about 3-4 years ago with the revival of their songs by the country’s top bands and performers. Songs which became famous during the 70s and 80s like Ewan, Nakapagtataka, Dobidoo, Yakap sa Dilim, Awit ng Barkada and many more, were given new treatment and once more, became bigger hits. The APO’s songs and music are truly timeless!

For the APO Hiking Society Live in GenSan, expect most of these songs to be sung their own way that they were performed for the past four decades but backed up by the latest concert enhancements available today. These plus their witty and funny takes on current political and national scenes infused into their acts will surely make the APO experience worthwhile for every general.

Ticket prices to the APO Hiking Society Live in GenSan are P250 (Silver); P500 (Gold); and, P1000 (Platinum).

Watch out for an upcoming blog post on the “APO Hiking Society Live in GenSan” Blog Contest brought to you by GenSan News Online Mag and McDale Productions.

The Mausoleums of Forest Lake San Carlos Memorial Park

Bariles has always been fascinated by the mausoleums inside the sprawling 19-hectare Forest Lake San Carlos Memorial Park ever since he and his family started visiting the place to pay respects for their dead. He had an inkling on how expensive these edifices must have cost and was curious about the identities of the rich and famous buried inside these small burial houses of different designs.

While he and his family of mortals along with thousands of other cemetery visitors would just spread themselves out on the grass on top of their dearly departed’s burial lots during All Saints and All Souls Day, Bariles would notice the small parties undergoing inside these mausoleums. Some would even have private masses presided inside their edifices. Eventually, it was his mother, Maria, a public school principal who would whisper to him who these people were.

And so now, in the spirit of the season of the departed souls, GenSan News Online Mag is featuring these mausoleums which have fascinated Bariles as a kid, to show you the state of Mausoleum Architecture in GenSan and make you realize the extent of how the rich and famous of General Santos City care for their dead.

Thanks to both Bariles and Marz for these pictures. Identities of the owners of each mausoleum, to follow soon…(misplaced my list..hehehe)

GenSan-Manila triple daily flights via CebPac and PAL

While we were all busy preparing for the long weekend last week, the General Santos City International Airport has started facilitating three daily flights to Manila on October 25, 2009!

http://i813.photobucket.com/albums/zz52/fmdear/4067181455_8bd3fc758c_o.jpg

This came about due to the country’s leading airline Cebu Pacific (CEB) offering twice daily flights to travellers from the SOCCSKSARGEN Area, in addition to Philippine Airlines single daily flight on the same route.

CEB used to offer the 2 GenSan-Manila flights three times a week only.

Now, passengers from the South Central Mindanao and outlying areas can have a choice between morning flights that leave GenSan at 9:20am (CEB) and 10:-5am (PAL); and afternoon flights that depart GenSan at 2:50pm (CEB) on a DAILY BASIS.

From Manila, Cebu Pacific flies out to GenSan at 7:00am and 12:30pm while Philippine Airlines depart for GenSan at 7:05am everyday.

With this increase in frequencies daily, which hopefully will produce CHEAPER FARES due to tight competition between the two giant airlines, let us expect more movement of people and goods from GenSan to Manila and vice versa.

Hopefully, this will boost even more the tourism potential and economy of General Santos, in particular and Soccsksargen in general.

So what are you waiting for? LIPAD NA!
