I-Chef, Tumble Tots
in Gensan next year

A bigger I-Chef Culinary School building will rise next year in Barangay Lagao, General Santos City.

Businesswoman Joji Ilagan-Bian said the four-story building with a total floor area of 3,000 square meters will house the culinary school and the pre-school, Tumble Tots, both owned by her.

Bian’s husband George said the total cost of the building would not be over P70 million, including the land. He added they bought the property a year ago.

“Now is the best time to put investments in GenSan. We have confidence in the economic progress in GenSan,” Bian said.

The building is being eyed to be bigger than the I-Chef school in Davao City. The period of construction has been fast tracked in time for the opening of the schools in June next year.

JIB has been present in Gensan for five years now since the opening of its first call center.

Bian said within five years they will put buildings in key cities in Mindanao. The buildings will be smaller buildings but will have the same facilities.

She added they might also venture into areas like Sultan Kudarat.

I-Chef or Institute of International Culinary and Hospitality Entrepreneurship provides outstanding credentials by developing culinary creativity and business skills that ensures a successful career in the international hospitality and culinary industry.

The I-Chef situated in De Jesus Street in Davao City, which is of 2,500 square meter floor area, houses the most modern and state-of-the-art culinary equipment for a globally competent training delivery.

It also offers a curriculum that teaches students the academic, technical, and interpersonal skills necessary for building their own businesses in culinary and hospitality.

On the other hand, Tumble Tots is Britain’s leading pre-school and has over 800 centers world-wide. The two centers in the Philippines – in Davao City along Mabini Street and in Manila – continue to nurture kids with relevant education.

The teaching equipment used are the same in TT in London. It offers programs for Gymbabes for children 6 months old to walking, Tumble Tots for children walking to two years, and Gymbobs for children 5 to 7 years old.

Other programs offered are RigthStart Toddlers (RS), RightStart Explorer 1, RS Explorer 2, and the big RS program. Maya M. Padillo

FREE Aerobics Classes from Robinsons GenSan!

For couch potatoes and endomorphs like Bariles and his siblings who have long wanted to lose weight but couldn’t be able to do it due to one reason or another, here is some piece of good news!

Robinsons Place GenSan is spearheading an activity meant for overweights, underweights or guys who just simply want to live healty. This is their weekend Aerobics Class which they have dubbed simply as, “GROUP EXERCISE“.

http://i813.photobucket.com/albums/zz52/fmdear/1-34.jpg

Robinsons GenSan 's Poster for their Group Exercise Activity"

From 6:00am to 7:00am every Saturday and Sunday, Robinsons Place GenSan is providing group exercise classes to anybody who would want to lose weight, tone their bodies and sweat if off in a Mass Aerobics Session right at their Main Entrance under the tall canopy of their mall.

This is their way of contributing to the local city government’s mission in promoting a healthy lifestyle for the generals; and for the benefit of some of their employees who will also be joining the one-hour aerobics marathon. Considering the alarming trend of people developing diabetes, heart disease, hypertension these days, this is one very laudable project from the Robinsons Management.

No sign up is needed here. It is open to everyone, of all ages and sizes. Just be sure to be dressed appropriately for the occasion.

Even though it is of no cost to the generals, I just hope that Robinsons will also provide free-flowing drinking water for those who are joining this, including Bariles, of course.

See you on Saturday then as we huff and puff away to slimmer, sexier and healthier bods, courtesy of Robinsons Place GenSAn’s GROUP EXERCISE PROJECT!!!

Right after the program, there was a fireworks display and I decided to shoot from the Sydney Hotel rooftop to include the Plaza Heneral Santos in the foreground.

Sagittarius, Zijin Mining deal likely reached in February

GENERAL SANTOS CITY -- Results of the offer of Chinese firm Zijin Mining Group Co. Ltd to acquire Indophil Resources NL may be known not later than February based on Australian laws.

A successful deal would allow Zijin to own up to 37.5 percent interest in the Tampakan project, which is pursued by Philippine affiliate Sagittarius Mines Inc.

Early this month, Zijin offered to buy out Indophil, a firm listed at the Australian bourse which has at least 2,000 shareholders, some of whom are from the Philippines.

The Indophil board has recommended to shareholders Zijin's bid in the absence of a superior proposal from other parties, Gavan Collery, Indophil corporate affairs manager, said over e-mail.

Zijin, the largest gold producer and the third largest copper producer in China, has a takeover offer to Indophil for A$1.28 per share or a value of A$545 million (on a fully diluted basis).

The Chinese firm is expected to file a formal bidder's statement on December 18.

A source privy to the negotiations said the broad outcome of the Zijin bid for Indophil should be known not later in February next year.

The source who asked for anonymity explained that the Australian law requires the offer to be under consideration by shareholders for at least 30 days after all the formal documents have been issued.

Collery noted that Zijin is seeking to buy Indophil because it has a one third interest in the Tampakan project, Indophil's major asset in its portfolio.

"Once Zijin is successful in taking over Indophil, it will inherit Indophil's rights and obligations in respect of Sagittarius," he said.

Sagittarius is controlled by Xstrata Copper, the world's fourth largest copper producer, through a 62.5 percent interest.

Indophil owns 34.23 percent interest in the Tampakan project, with a right to acquire an additional 3.27 percent held by Filipino conglomerate Alsons Corp.

Xstrata Copper is a major shareholder at Indophil through its 19.99 percent interest.

In preparation for Zijin's formal offer to takeover Indophil, the Chinese firm is seeking to also acquire Xstrata's interest in Indophil, said Collery.

"This process is called a pre-bid agreement. So that means, under Australian law, that Zijin must declare a link or beneficial interest to 19.99 percent of Indophil," he explained.

Sagittarius President Peter Forrestal earlier said Sagittarius would welcome the introduction of Zijin since it has the capacity to support the advancement of the Tampakan Project.

"The Zijin Mining Group is a well established international mining company with a focus on the exploration and development of gold and base metals," Forrestal said.

"Their interest in Indophil demonstrates the potential of the Tampakan Project which is one of the largest undeveloped copper-gold deposits in South East Asia," he added.

Last October, Sagittarius announced a revised resource estimate for the Tampakan project totaling 2.4 billion tons at a grade of 0.6 percent copper and 0.2 grams per ton gold and containing 13.5 million tons of copper and 15.8 million ounces of gold, using a 0.3 percent copper cut-off grade.

I Conquered Nopol Hills

http://i813.photobucket.com/albums/zz52/fmdear/2-19.jpg

Have you ever noticed those flat hilltops that you see each time you look at Mt. Matutum? Well, I’ve conquered those hills, not just one but three. Starting at the hill’s base at the Leyson Farm at Barangay Mabuhay, I braved the rough trek to the hill’s apex in March 29, 2002, a Good Friday.

People who know me would certainly raise an eyebrow because I am not exactly superman. But conquer it, I did. The trek was for thirty minutes but we reached the top after an hour and a half. There were not much trees to block the scorching sun but the cool wind was enough to encourage us to move on. At the apex, the view was a sight to behold. One gets a full view of the GenSan landscape, the majesty of Mt. Matutum and different hills surrounding South Cotabato. But what gave me the goose bumps was the spectacle of the setting sun, whose color changed from deep yellow gold to flaming orange. We decided to forego the planned bonfire as we opted to be environmentally correct and junk the tire burning altogether. Our hope for a restful sleep was thwarted when the strong winds came. My partner and I were in our enclosed tent but just the same, the biting cold was way too much. We were just glad the morning finally came. The trek down Nopol Hills was uneventful but the fact that I conquered it was enough reason to celebrate. Thanks to Martin Leyson and his family for this opportunity. I made a commitment that the next time that I’ll do the trek; I’ll be more physically fit.

Want to know who Kuya Orman is? Here he is....

KCC Cinemas go Dolby Digital Surround-Ex

If you happened to watch a movie in one of the six cinemas of the KCC Mall of GenSan lately, you must have noticed something different while viewing a blockbuster and listening to its soundtrack.

The sounds emanating from the action happening on the screen are fuller, more powerful, crispier, richer and seem to envelop you the viewer, from all around the hall. This is because the 6 KCC Cinemas have been equipped with the state of the art DOLBY DIGITAL SURROUND EX.

http://i813.photobucket.com/albums/zz52/fmdear/1-38.jpg

With the Dolby Digital Surround-Ex, each moviehouse of KCC has been fitted with 5 audio channels or speakers: 3 front, two back and one sub. This creates a surround environment, with each speaker independently producing a separate sound.

Thus one hears all the sounds on the movie’s playback, from the minutest drop of a nail to the faintest chirp of a cicada and gets blown away with louder and more bombastic explosions and shoot-outs on screen.

Still, with the much better and enhanced sound quality of their moviehouses, the management of KCC has deemed it necessary to maintain the same price of each admission ticket at P70 (on the average).

This is of course, quite a bargain considering that Robinsons GenSan Movieworld which do not have Dolby Digital Surround-EX charge P81 per viewer. What they are proud to offer however, are sparklingly new theaters, upholstered and soft reclining seats with movable elbow rests and more legroom plus carpeted flooring.

So if you were to choose, would you rather watch the next blockbuster at KCC Cinemas which are older, offer no frills but are equipped with Dolby Digital Surround-EX audio equipment or the newer, Robinsons Movieworld?

Landscape of Emotions: A Portraiture Workshop

http://i813.photobucket.com/albums/zz52/fmdear/photo.jpg

I’m sharing this information to all Photography enthusiasts. This is a seminar on portraiture and will be conducted by the famous Manny Librodo, a Filipino who has conducted this same workshop in different parts of the globe. This is open to everyone but for limited slots only. The workshop fee is kinda steep at PhP7,500.00 but considering that it will be conducted by THE Manny Librodo, it’s really quite a steal. The fee is inclusive of lunch and snacks. Venue is the Kalsangi Clubhouse in Polomolok, South Cotabato.

Participants must have the Basic Knowledge of Photoshop CS3 to really appreciate the “magic” in every Librodo shot. Please bring your Digital Single-Lens Reflex (DSLR) camera, Reflectors and a laptop for Post Processing of your shots. For more information, you may contact the President of the Gensan Camera Club, Omar Gallinero at omar.gallinero@gmail.com.

Tatay Pepe’s is 8!

Bariles was very much privileged to have been able to visit GenSan’s premier acoustic restobar, Tatay Pepe’s at its new location along Laurel East Avenue when it recently celebrated it’s 8th anniversary with a party.

"Tatay Pepe's at their new location along Laurel East Avenue, General Santos City"

http://i813.photobucket.com/albums/zz52/fmdear/6-6.jpg

It has been a long time since he spent one Valentine’s Night there, seven years ago with his friends and colleagues from his former employer, Anna@Rythms 97.5-FM (National Broadcasting Corporation). Tatay Pepe’s was the group’s favorite hangout when they wanted to unwind and listen to talented young female and male acoustic performers and partake of the bar’s famous Goto, Batchoy and Sinugba.

http://i813.photobucket.com/albums/zz52/fmdear/5-5.jpg

The invitation therefore from Tatay Pepe’s co-owner Jazmin Descalzo to the 8th anniversary party was a very welcome development.

Bariles was curious about the quality of the bar’s new offerings which seem to attract so many customers every night especially during weekends.

This is judging from the number of vehicles parked infront of its main entrance everytime he passed by.

Aside from that, the Fishman also wanted to meet some old friends and former habitues of the restobar when it was still in situated along Osmena North.

The new Tatay Pepe’s has a wider facade with space for its barbecue grill on the left . Upon entering its wide doors, Bariles immediately noticed a roofed stage about a few meters to the right of the entrance, in the middle of an open veranda which separates the performers from the audience area.

http://i813.photobucket.com/albums/zz52/fmdear/4-5.jpg
"Tatay Pepe's stage situated at the edge of an open-air veranda"

The hall of the new Tatay Pepe’s is more spacious and can easily accommodate around 100 seated guests. When Bariles arrived, he was met by Jaz who was then celebrating her birthday and the welcoming faces and smiles of old friends who have started passing around drinks earlier.

http://i813.photobucket.com/albums/zz52/fmdear/3-8.jpg
"Some of the guests during Tatay's Pepe's 8th Anniversary and co-owner Jaz Descalzo's birthday party."

Farther inside the bar is a separate hut for groups who would like their own private area. This is just beside the kitchen and looks out into the stage and audience area.

http://i813.photobucket.com/albums/zz52/fmdear/2-20.jpg
"The more private hut for customers wanting exclusivity, just like this happy and gay group of Tatay Pepe's 8th Anniversary guests."

After a moment rebonding with old friends and having his fill of the free chow, Bariles settled in to discover the real reason why Tatay Pepe’s still packs them all in even after eight years.

So these exceptional performers, who are local artists are the reasons why Tatay Pepe's is still up there in the entertainment radar of the generals. Now Bariles knows. Now You know. The scheduled acoustic performers began showing their stuff and that’s when the mystery started unravelling. Bariles was amazed! These young artists are among the best ones that he has witnessed perform ever.
With only a guitar and a boom box to accompany them, both the female and male singers and their mellifluous voices did justice individually or as a duo to current hit songs from both OPM and foreign artists.

So these exceptional performers, who are local artists are the reasons why Tatay Pepe’s is still up there in the entertainment radar of the generals. Now Bariles knows. Now You know.

By the way, just like during the early days of Tatay Pepe’s, customers may still JAM with the performers on stage and sing to their hearts’ delight. Be sure to bring your own cheering squad!

Nokia Care Center at KCC Mall of GenSan

Nokia Care Center, the only Service and Repair Center of Nokia Philippines in South Central Mindanao, has been around for almost a year now at the upper floor of the KCC Mall of GenSan. It was only last week however, that Bariles had the reason and the chance to visit it. His ever loyal and trustworthy Nokia 6288 phone unit wouldn’t function anymore.

http://i813.photobucket.com/albums/zz52/fmdear/2-21.jpg

Bariles got his Nokia free from SMART Communications two years ago when he signed on to his postpaid account.

It did not give him any major problem at all even after the second year that they have been together but upon entering its 25th month on earth, Bariles’s 6288 phone unit simply went kaput(!).

In short, it would not turn on or function, maybe exhausted after working non-stop for somebody as active and as mobile as Bariles. It has fallen to the ground inumerable times already and has undergone the worst in wear and tear and thus looks older than it should. If it was human, Bariles’ Nokia 6288 would have been a war veteran.

He did not present it to any unauthorized or run-of-the-mill service center however, since the words of assurance of Nokia Philippines General Manager William Hamilton Whyte (whom he personally met in 2009 during the opening of the 1st Nokia Store in Region 12, at KCC) kepta ringing in his ears.

The Finnish gentleman said at that time that once Nokia Care opens in Gensan, it would accept any Nokia unit regardless of condition and age. Bariles then hied off to KCC, went up the 3rd floor and entered the doors of their unassuming care center.

There was no client inside the office and so Bariles immediately surrendered his deader than dead phone to the amiable lady behind the counter.

In less than 5 minutes, after handing the phone unit to their technician, she made him sign some papers, put up a deposit of P200 since the phone has gone past the warranty period of one year.

Bariles was about to go when advised by Maritess (that’s her name) that he can wait for his phone.

WOW!

To while away the time, he engaged the other lady working there who happened to be the the Center Supervisor, Ms. Annavi Abulag to some small talk. A local resident, Annavi revealed that the NOKIA CARE CENTER in GenSan is being operated by Greystone Data Systems. They have another one in Cagayan de Oro.

Annavi mentioned that there is still a need to educate Nokia phone users in the Philippines to not just entrust their units to any service repairman. Bariles himself was aware of this because at least 3 people advised him to take his busted phone unit to one of the many repair centers at the basement of Gaisano Mall of GenSan since they are very affordable.

http://i813.photobucket.com/albums/zz52/fmdear/1-40.jpg
"The NOKIA CARE CENTER staff"

Of course he didn’t want to take tha risk, and knowing that his phone is better off at the authorized service center, he was willing to pay the price for the quality repair of his clunky, best friend.

In about 15 short minutes, the technician handed him back his Nokia 6288, repaired, renewed and ready to service his master, the Fishman again.

Bariles tried it and it was perfectly fine again, just like it used to be the first time he had it. And to top it all, if he wanted to replace his phone’s parts and accessories, he can just order from Nokia Care Center who will have it delivered in a matter of days from Manila. He promised to come back in a matter of weeks to refurbish his 6288 with its much needed new armor.

The center also accepts unwanted, unused and ready-to-be thrown phone parts, accessories and batteries of any Nokia phone. They will have them sent back to their RECYCLING CENTERS in Asia as part of their commitment for a GREENER WORLD.

By the way, Bariles’ total bill amounted to P 500++ ONLY with a warranty of 90 days.

Not bad considering that whatever defective part was replaced, it was done so with original parts that only NOKIA CARE CENTERS can provide.

Thank you NOKIA CARE.

GenSan fast-tracks modernization, expansion of city district hospital
By NONOY E. LACSON
December 12, 2009, 5:45pm

GENERAL SANTOS CITY – The city government here is expediting the early completion of the ongoing P100-million modernization and expansion of the city district hospital and its facilities.

City Mayor Pedro Acharon Jr. said the construction of the city hospital’s new two-storey building, renovation of the hospital façade and installation of modern medical facilities is scheduled to be completed by March next year.

“Most of these projects will be completed by March and become operational before the scheduled May 2010 elections,” the mayor said.

Acharon said the contractor of the project assured him that the two-storey hospital building would be completed by March and workers are now concentrating on the ground floor works.

Last month, the Department of Health (DoH) released some P13.5 million to the local government to cover the construction of the hospital facade and the expansion of its emergency room and the out-patient department.

The DoH also poured in P10 million last year for the initial phase of the upgrading of the hospital infrastructure, equipment and facilities and later announced another allocation of P30 million to facilitate the city government’s plan to elevate the classification of the hospital into tertiary level.

The city hospital projects, which were mainly co-funded by the city government and the DoH, include the installation of piped-in oxygen for its intensive care unit (ICU); completion of the hospital warehouse; construction of additional room for the operating room complex; renovation of the outpatient department, emergency room, hospital façade, pediatric ward and pediatric intensive care unit; and, the opening of a dialysis center.

The city government here has earmarked at least P7 million while the DoH allocated P16.56 million and another P13.44 million for the purchase of various sets of hospital facilities.

Acharon said the hospital, when completed, will serve the growing hospital clientele of this city and provide convenience to relatives of patients confined at the medical facility.

Business chamber to support power plant

GENERAL SANTOS CITY -- The business sector in this city is inclined to support an Alcantara-led coal power plant project in neighboring Maasim, Sarangani, a top official said.

The said support to the project aims to avert the risk of closure of businesses due to the projected lack of dependable power supply in the next few years.

Pilar T. Afuang, executive director of the General Santos City Chamber of Commerce and Industry Foundation Inc., feared a debacle will onslaught the local economy if the looming power crisis warned to hit the city in the next few years would not be addressed.

"We need the energy, and the chamber's stand is to endorse whatever power plant will be erected to reduce the risk of [the] closing up businesses. And also to be able to invite more investors to come and do business in GenSan and the neighboring cities in Region 12 (Soccsksargen)," she said.

The chamber's stance contradicted the position raised earlier by the City Council against the 200-megawatt coal-fired power project of Conal Holdings Corp., as well as the local Catholic Church.

Councilor Richard L. Atendido, chair of the council's environment committee, said majority of the council members approved the junking of the coal power plant project several months ago.

"It [will bring] a lot of negative effect on human health and the environment," the councilor said.

Afuang said the chamber is now moving to get more information on the management of a coal-fired power plant, specifically knowledge on safety mechanisms that would control pollutants to prevent community destructions in the future.

An unstable power situation in the locality, which is dubbed the "Tuna Capital of the Philippines," would affect the industry that has brought it in the international trading map, she noted.

Afuang warned the hardest hit will be the fresh tuna sector, explaining that with lack of power, it would be "difficult to maintain the temperature of cold storage facilities."

Joseph C. Nocos, Conal Holdings vice president, said recently the coal plant project is on track to meet the construction target in the first quarter of 2010, following a revised schedule.

He said the firm will employ the latest technology that would mitigate the impact of the coal plant to the environment.

Alsons Corp. owns 60 percent of Conal Holdings and the rest is held by the Electricity Generating Public Co., Thailand's biggest power producer.

Earlier, Conal Holdings and the South Cotabato Electric Cooperative II, the power distributor in the city, Sarangani province and parts of South Cotabato, forged a supply deal for at least 100 MW.

Socoteco II general manager Rodolfo G. Ocat said the cooperative would likely face a power shortfall three years from now if demand continues to go up, at an estimated growth rate of 3.7 percent annually.

The area covered by their franchise is reportedly already using up to 100 MW during peak hours from the National Power Corp. and Alabel, Sarangani-based independent power producer Southern Philippines Power Corp., another firm under the Alsons conglomerate.

Ocat said their cooperative needs at least 85 MW for its base load requirement.

Europe firm may finance General Santos campus
By Danielle Clara P. Dandan

A EUROPEAN agency is ready to finance the construction of the UST General Santos satellite campus once it receives a master plan from the University, UST Rector Fr. Ernesto Arceo, O.P. has bared.

Arceo did not disclose the name of the funding institution, but said an alumnus, Architect George Ramos, made the recommendation. Ramos found the plans for the General Santos campus “impressive,” the Rector said.

“Ramos was encouraged to recommend UST to the agency when he saw the construction of UST in Sta. Rosa, Laguna taking place,” Arceo told the Varsitarian.

Arceo said that the University must first submit a long-term master plan for the General Santos campus before the agency releases funds.

“As of now, UST Gen-San is at the planning stage. We have to inform the agency about our specific plans for the next 10 to 15 years before it can provide the necessary funding,” he said.

Arceo added that the agency has supported several universities around the world and UST would be the first in the Philippines.

“The agency already helped many non-government schools in Southeast Asia because its main goal is to bring education to these developing countries,” he said.

Arceo said the satellite campus might look a lot like the España campus.

“UST Gen-San is most likely to be a ‘carbon copy’ of UST España, depending on the final outcome of our planning committee’s study,” Arceo said. “The committee is composed of architects and researchers who are studying the possible infrastructures to build in the new campus.”

Just like the España campus, a hospital and church will rise in General Santos, Arceo said.

In addition, there are 6,000 coconut trees in the site, a source of virgin coconut oil and other herbal medicines that UST General Santos plans to commercialize.

Although the list of academic programs is not yet final, the satellite campus might offer medical courses due at the request of the residents. UST General Santos will most likely offer courses being taught in Manila.

Last summer, the University invited faculty members from schools around the UST General Santos site to a teaching seminar in preparation for the campus’ opening in 2011.

UST General Santos, which covers 800,000 square meters, will be the biggest university in Mindanao.

“The expansion of UST Gen-San aims to reach out to students of Mindanao who are not capable of traveling to Manila. Nevertheless, they will still be given quality education and genuine Thomasian service,” Arceo said.

GenSan prepares for Pacman’s birthday bash
By NICK GIONGCO
December 15, 2009, 4:45pm

General Santos City is buzzing with excitement once again as its most beloved son celebrates his 31st birthday on Wednesday with personalities from the world of politics, showbiz and sports gracing the evening affair that will be held at the KCC Convention Center.

As Manny Pacquiao turns another leaf, the city is rolling the red carpet for the nth time with the arrival of bigwigs from Manila and elsewhere but a notable absentee is Puerto Rican Miguel Cotto, who had earlier expressed interest in taking the long flight to the country.

Owing to time constraints, Cotto is no longer arriving and he has sent word to Pacquiao assistant Joe Ramos via Team Cotto aide-de-camp Bryan Perez, that he wishes the Filipino fighter all the best in his special day.

“Maybe, some other time (Cotto will get to visit the Philippines),” said Perez. “Still, Miguel wishes Manny a happy birthday.”

Cotto has to travel nine hours by air from San Juan, Puerto Rico, to either Los Angeles or San Francisco, to catch a 16-hour flight to Manila, making it too hard on the popular Cotto and his companions.

Pacquiao and Cotto engaged in a bruising and bloody battle last month at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas and as soon as referee Kenny Bayless stopped the fight, Cotto immediately went to Pacquiao’s corner and congratulated his conqueror.

Last year, there were several luminaries from boxing.

Attending last year’s celebrations were fighters David Diaz of the US, who Pacquiao had knocked out in June, and Edwin Valero of Venezuela, as well as Hall of Fame promoter Bob Arum and trainer Freddie Roach.

The guest of honor was President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo, who was joined in the table by Pacquiao, Arum, Roach and Cabinet secretary and long-time Pacquiao supporter Lito Atienza.

Former Ilocos Sur Gov. Chavit Singson, another avid admirer of Pacquiao, is flying to General Santos City on board his private plane.

From his home in Vigan, Singson’s plane will make a stopover in Manila to pick up other guests, then proceed to General Santos City.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY, MANNY!

By Maloney L. Samaco
PhilBoxing.com
Thu, 17 Dec 2009

Emmanuel “Manny” Dapidran Pacquiao was born December 17, 1978 in Kibawe, Bukidnon and resides in General Santos City. Christian belief holds that Emmanuel means the “Messiah” and he was born just eight days before Christmas, thus he was named as such.

True to his name Emmanuel, Manny is the “Messiah” to the deteriorating Philippine sports. He is the “Messiah” to the boxing world whose popularity is dwindling due to the rising costs of pay-per-view shows and the evident lack of talents.

Today Manny will celebrate his 31st birthday in General Santos City in the same venue where he commemorated his 30th birthday last year. It serves also a victory party for his convincing win over Miguel Cotto.

Last year during his 30th birthday bash, President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo led the guests which include Freddie Roach and Bob Arum. It capped his upset win over the legendary Golden Boy Oscar de la Hoya.

More than 1,000 guests graced the occasion exactly a year ago and it was reported that P3.5 million was spent for the celebration. Other visitors include David Diaz and Edwin Valero.

If last year the focus of the celebration was his life as a boxer, this year’s theme will highlight his life as a son, father and husband. The event will feature a mini-concert which showcases Manny’s acting and singing talents. A raffle draw will be held with a Toyota Vios as a grand prize.

In his 31 years in this world, Pacquiao is already considered as one of the greatest boxer that ever lived. Among Asians, he is already the best in boxing history.

Pacquiao is the first boxer to win seven world titles in seven different weight divisions. As an added feather to his cap, he is the only boxer to win the lineal championship in four different weight classes.

He is currently the WBO world welterweight champion, the IBO and Ring Magazine light welterweight champion, and holds the most prestigious title as the Ring Magazine No. 1 pound-for-pound boxer in the world.

The other crowns Pacquiao held were the WBC world lightweight championship, the WBC world super featherweight championship, the IBF world super bantamweight championship, and the WBC world flyweight championship.

Likewise, he once held the popular Ring Magazine featherweight and super featherweight titles being regarded as the People’s Champion.

Aside from boxing, Pacquiao had stints in politics, acting, filmmaking, and music recording. He also played basketball and billiards and is a military reservist.
Due to extreme poverty, Pacquiao received only an elementary education. He passed a high school equivalency exam and enrolled for a college degree at Notre Dame of Dadiangas University.

Pacquiao began his professional boxing career when he was just 16 years old and weighed 106 pounds, in the light flyweight category. His professional debut was a four round bout against Edmund "Enting" Ignacio, on January 22, 1995, which PacMan handily won by decision.

In all his 55 fights, he won 50 of them, 30 by KO, lost 3 with 2 KO losses, and drawn 2. He has a high 69.09% KO rate in all his wins and has boxed a total of 305 rounds. His nicknames include The PacMan, The Destroyer and The Greatest.

GenSan celebrates Islamic New Year 1431

On December 18, 2009, the whole Islam world observes the Amon Jadid or the Islamic New Year.

The date corresponds to the 1st day of Muharram 1431 Hijrah, or the first day of the month of Muharram, the month in which the prophet Mohammed emigrated from Mecca to Medina. The holiday is also called simply Muharram.

http://i813.photobucket.com/albums/zz52/fmdear/1-41.jpg

The way our brother and sister Muslims celebrate the New Year is very much different from our traditional way of doing it. The congregate in mosques to offer prayers and stay on to listen to readings from the Koran.

A very significant portion of the prayer service is the narration of the Hegira. This is the story of the migration of the prophet Mohammad from Mecca to Medina. The day is spent in prayer and reflection on one’s life.

There are usually no fireworks, noisemakers and the usual celebrations we associate with the New Year, althought the open cities in the Middle East have been imitating their Chirstian. It is one solemn day for the Islam world.

Here in South Central Mindanao, particularly in General Santos City, the Office of Muslim Affairs XII-A, has declared December 18, 2009 as a Muslim Holiday, by virtue of PD 1083 and Civil Service Commission Resolution No. 81-1277 dated November 13, 1981.

In his letter to GenSan City Mayor Pedro B. Acharon, Jr., OMA Officer-in-Charge Datumanong S. Colano wrote, “In view of the significance of the occasion, please excuse concerned officials and employees of your office from reporting to office to allow them (sic) celebrate the holiday.”

With that, allow us to greet our pagari’s a “HAPPY AND PEACEFUL ISLAMIC NEW YEAR!”

Gensan gears up for Pacquiao’s birthday bash

MANILA, Philippines -- General Santos City is currently gearing up for Manny Pacquiao’s 31st birthday celebration this coming Thursday (December 17).

A regional report said organizers are currently dressing up the KCC Convention Center, the same site where the pound-for-pound boxing champion celebrated his birthday last year.

Organizers said that unlike last year’s theme that focused on Pacquiao’s life as a boxer, this year’s celebration will emphasize other facets of his life.

Among this year’s birthday themes are Pacquiao’s roles as a son, father and husband.

The event, which will also serve as a mini-concert, will also highlight Pacquiao’s entrepreneurial skills and his acting and singing talents.

The celebration will be a tribute to Pacquiao after he won 7 world titles in 7 different weight classes.

‘Pacquiao loves singing more than boxing’

The Centerpoint band, which will serve as the front act of Pacquiao’s grand birthday bash, is also busy rehearsing.

Its lead composer Julius Paler has actually written Pacquiao a song titled “King of the Ring”.

Paler said the song is just right for Pacquiao, who recently won the World Boxing Organization (WBO) welterweight title from Puerto Rican boxer Miguel Cotto last month.

Pacquiao’s main composer, Lito Camo, also arrived on site to join the rehearsals.

Camo said Pacquiao, who has released several recording albums, said is excited to sing at the concert.

“Actually si Manny, mas excited pa ata sa pagiging singer niya, kaysa sa pagiging boksingero. (Actually Manny seems more excited about his being a singer than his being a boxer),” he said.

Organizers will also hold a raffle draw, which counts a Toyota Vios as the grand prize.

Cotto doubtful to attend party

Meanwhile, Cotto is reportedly doubtful if he can attend the celebration.

Cotto, who had earlier expressed interest in visiting the Philippines, may not join Pacquiao on his 31st birthday owing to time constraint, according to MB.com.ph.

The report said Cotto aide-de-camp Bryan Perez sent a message to Pacquiao’s assistant, Joe Ramos, that the Puerto Rican champ wishes the Filipino "all the best in his birthday."

“Maybe, some other time (Cotto will get to visit the Philippines),” Perez said in the article. “Still, Miguel wishes Manny a happy birthday.”

Last year’s guests include former Pacquiao opponent David Diaz, Venezuelan champ Edwin Valero, Top Rank promoter Bob Arum and American boxing trainer Freddie Roach. With a report from Chat Ansagay, ABS-CBN News SOKSARGEN

Pacquiao raffling a Toyota Vios for his Birthday Concert

On Thursday, December 17, 2009, all roads lead to World Boxing Champion Manny “Pacman” Pacquiao 31st birthday celebration in General Santos City. And why not? He will be celebrating it in a manner bigger and more grandiose than his all his past birthdays combined. (See our blog posts on his 2008 and 2007 parties by clicking on their respective years.)

Consider these….

If latest media reports are to be believed, Pacquiao's 31st birthday concert will be graced by the presence of his latest boxing conquest, planing in from Puerto Rico, Mr. Miguel Cotto!
To be held at the huge KCC Mall of GenSan Events and Convention Center, the celebration will take the form of a birthday concert for the first time. Dubbed as “Manny Pacquiao’s REVOLUTION“, Bariles, who has gotten an invite will surely be treated to Manny’s rendition of his favorite English songs and original Tagalog compositions by his good friend Lito Camo.

Secondly, there will be a Raffle of sorts again. This time however, Manny is raffling off something bigger – a brand new unit of TOYOTA VIOS!!! This and seven other major prizes, as indicated in the Gate Pass cum Raffle Ticket to his birthday concert. Whew!

Thirdly, Manny Pacquiao’s Birthday Party will be star-studded as usual with a guest list consisting of names from the entertainment, government, sports and business sectors. But look who will be there for the Champ’s grand celebration this time? If latest media reports are to be believed, Pacquiao’s 31st birthday concert will be graced by the presence of his latest boxing conquest, planing in from Puerto Rico, Mr. Miguel Cotto!

Of course this time, Manny will not be the only crowd-drawer during his 31st birthday. For the past 24 months, another Pacquiao has earned enough stalwart points to be in the running for “Entertainer of the Year”. Of course you know who that is.

Mommy Dionisia Pacquiao, of course, who for sure will be making her own grand entrance. But what’s keeping everyone guessing is what exactly will she be wearing this time?

Now that should be something that should not be missed by Bariles’ camera.

Here below are the different pages of the fold-out invitation which Bariles received for “Manny Pacquiao’s REVOLUTION” – A Grand Birthday Concert.

And finally, the inside centerfold of the birthday concert Invite of Manny Pacquiao.

M Mag feature GenSan blogs!

One of the glossy publications published locally in Mindanao is M Magazine.

M Magazine is a monthly lifestyle slash travel slash outdoor magazine which has been running features on the Promised Land and the personalities who matter on the island. Only on its 2nd year, M or m, which runs the blurb “Live and Living in Mindanao” on its front cover has proven itself to be Southern Philippines’ social barometer.

For its latest December issue, it featured six Mindanao blogs, two of which were by bloggers from General Santos City. This is for a short feature they entitled,“wwow.Mindanao”.

According to its introduction. “Here’s one kind of surfing that needs no sun, sea or wet surf. Hit the techie side of the island and get awashed with these interesting sights, created by Mindanawons for the virtual universe.”

Then, it proceeded to name the six blogs including our friends Bob Timonera’s Kape Ta Bay; Blogie Robbillo’s DavaoDeli plus our very own “GenSan News Online Mag” and our sister blog “Ganda Ever So Much” (from younger sibling Orman), together with screenshots of the blogs themselves.

Noteworthy is Ganda Ever So Much since it is less than 4 months old and yet has reached quite a sizeable number of followers and dedicated readers due to the author Orman’s no-holds-barred style of spewing tales of love, laughter, and the latest on Pinoy Big Brother.

Below is a picture of that page from m Magazine.

P70million Culinary School in GenSan coming up!

We just found this on the web!

A private learning institution will soon rise in General Santos City, along the Leon Llido Road in Barangay Lagao, together with a branch of an international pre-school. The whole thing costs P70 million!!!!

The names of the schools: The Institute of International Culinary and Hospitality Entrepreneurship (ICEHEF); and, Tumble Tots, a franchise of a Uk-based pre-school, also at the same venue.

Not only will this mean that GenSan is on its way to be the EDUCATIONAL CAPITAL of Region 12 (with the UST commencing the construction of their campus in 2010), but also more employment for our local teaching force.

http://i813.photobucket.com/albums/zz52/fmdear/1-43.jpg
"The property where the P70million Culinary School and Pre-School will rise. It is located along Leon Llido Street."

Ibang klase ka na talaga, GEnSan!!!!

Here is the news report from Philippine News Agency:

DAVAO CITY, Dec. 5 (PNA) — The Institute of International Culinary and Hospitality Enterperneurship (ICHEF) and Tumble Tots, a franchise of the International UK Based Pre School, run by Joji Ilagan Foundation, Inc. will expand in Barangay Lagao, General Santos City.

George Bian, president of JIB Welding Academy said a 3,000-square meter lot ground preparations are underway to fast track the construction in time for the June 2010 opening of classes.

Bian said the school has a capital expenditure of P70 million.

He said there is a need to expand to the provinces because in the coming years people would have problems on transportation cost and would rather look for good schools in the locality that could provide the kind of standards that they want to have for their children.

Joji Ilagan Foundation, Inc. chairperson Joji Ilagan Bian said the school will have the same instructions as all their schools follow uniform concepts including operations based on international standards.

Bian said the reason they are expanding in General Santos is that they believe in the economy of the city.

“We will be introducing the concept of international hospitality schools in the city noting that they have lots of students coming from that area in their Davao City-based schools,” she said.

She said they really have plans for General Santos City even as she said that they are eyeing other neighboring areas like South Cotabato and Sarangani.

She said the General Santos City expansion is part of their five year plan from 2010 to 2015 to put up schools in key cities in Mindanao like Sultan Kudarat. They had one in Iloilo, she added.

The schools could smaller but the facilities will be the same, Bian emphasized. (PNA)

Mindanao traders move to stabilize power supply
by Allen V Estabillo/MindaNews
Friday, 18 December 2009 07:32

GENERAL SANTOS CITY (MindaNews/17 Dec) – At least 13 business groups in Mindanao have agreed to jointly promote the development of additional energy resources in a bid to help stabilize the island’s power supply in the wake of a foreseen crisis within the next three to five years.

Vicente Lao, chair of the Mindanao Business Council (MinBC), said their group and 12 other business organizations and chambers of various key cities have established an alliance with stakeholders of Mindanao’s power industry to enhance their cooperation and information exchanges on efforts to resolve the impending power crisis in the island.

“Among the areas of cooperation initially identified were demand-side management for an efficient utilization of power all over the island, technology options on power generation and energy efficiency that may be adopted in harnessing untapped energy sources all over Mindanao,” he said in a press statement.

He said they agreed to launch an inventory of potential sites for power generation in various parts of Mindanao and promote them to potential investors.

Lao said they would also help in the identification of several banking and financial institutions that may possibly provide credit facilities for prospective investors.

Aside from the MinBC, among the groups that signed up with the alliance, dubbed Mindanao Electric Power Alliance or MEPA, were the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (ARMM) Business Council, Malaybalay City Business Club and the local chambers of commerce of Cagayan de Oro City, Davao City, Panabo City, General Santos City, Butuan City, Surigao City, Zamboanga City, Iligan City, Dipolog City, and Ozamiz City.

The initiative, which was an offshoot of the Mindanao Power Summit held earlier this month in Cagayan de Oro City, drew support from various power distribution utilities and major power producers based in Mindanao.

“The challenge of averting the impending power shortage in Mindanao cannot be left for the government alone to address. There has to be a convergence of all the concerned sectors to work with the government,” Lao explained.

Next month, he said they will convene the members of MEPA to further organize their grouping and chart their activities as well as specific tasks to facilitate its initial goal to establish convergence with the government.

Lao said the meeting, which will be hosted by the MinBC, will also focus on discussions for prospective initiatives they that may embark in consonance with the Mindanao Electric Power Action Agenda, which they adopted during the recent summit.

The MinBC earlier projected that Mindanao’s annual power requirement was projected to grow by an average of six percent over the next five years mainly due to the increasing needs of various emerging industries in key commercial and industrial areas in the island.

With Mindanao’s dependable capacity currently stuck at 1,510 megawatts (MW), the group said a deficit of 484 MW would be inevitable by 2014 if no new power generating plants or stations would become operational within the next three years.

Power producer Conal Holdings Corporation is presently finalizing the construction by early 2010 of its proposed 200 MW coal-fired power plant in Maasim town in Sarangani.

The US$450-million coal-fired power plant project, which is a joint venture between the Alson’s Consolidated Resources Corporation of the Alcantara Group and Thailand’s Electricity Generating Public Company Limited, was projected to become fully operational within two to three years. Regular Sunday Mass at Robinsons GenSan

Bariles just found out this afternoon that effective this Sunday, December 20 and all Sundays thereafter, shoppers of Robinsons Place GenSan have another event to look forward to inside the mall.

A Holy Mass will be offered at 11:00am every Sunday at the center of their huge atrium or activity center. This, after the management got the go-signal from Diocese of Marbel Bishop Dinualdo Gutierrez to their request of holding one there for the benefit of Catholics who weren’t able to catch the mass early during the morning at any of GenSan’s six parish churches and one Novitiate Chapel.

This coup of sorts augurs well for Robinsons which still has to attract the same number of weekend shoppers as those of either KCC or Gaisano. Offering their shoppers the chance to fulfill their Sunday obligations inside their airconditioned mall before they shop or dine is the best marketing weapon on their hands so far.

Airconditioned comfort and convenience while hearing Sunday mass, why not?

We just hope that Robinsons GenSan’s management go up another rung by not only giving their mass offertory collections to the diocese but by providing coin cans to all their checkout counters for the benefit of Bishop Gutierrez’s flagship project – the Bahay Pari.

That will endear Robinsons more to the Catholic faithful not only of GenSan but the whole of Soccsksargen. What do you think, Sir Dan Camat?

South Cot allots P195.6M for dev’t projects in 2010
by Allen V Estabillo/MindaNews
Monday, 21 December 2009 22:30

GENERAL SANTOS CITY (MindaNews/21 December) – The provincial government of South Cotabato has allocated P195.6 million for the implementation of new development initiatives within the province’s 10 towns and lone city next year.

Danilo Supe, provincial planning and development office chief, said such appropriation was based on the province’s approved Annual Investment Plan (AIP) for 2010 that was earlier endorsed by the Provincial Development Council.

He said that under the AIP, which represents 20 percent of the province’s development budget for next year, the local government’s development investments for 2010 will mainly focus on infrastructure, human, economic and environmental development as well as development administration.

Supe said the infrastructure component received anew the biggest allocation with P128.865 million followed by human development with P43.2 million, economic development with P13.752 million, environmental development P7.263 million and development administration P2.696 million.

“Next year’s AIP is mainly focused on our continuing community infrastructure buildup,” he said.

Supe said the infrastructure investments comprised at least 65.79 percent of the total allocation and with the infrastructure program for the delivery of basic services component taking the biggest slice of the budget pie with P50 million.

He said it was followed by the P38.3-million allocation for the construction, repairs and improvement of various infrastructure facilities that include barangay halls, school buildings, mini-gymnasiums, solar driers and covered courts.

The repairs and construction of provincial roads, bridges and other related infrastructure received a budget of P20 million and was augmented by an additional P10 million for the maintenance works.

The infrastructure component also included an allocation of P5.4 million for the purchase of barangay service vehicles, P2.985 million rural development and support infrastructures and P2 million for water supply and sanitation.

Supe said the AIP’s allocation for infrastructure is a major boost for the local government infrastructure development program, which received a budget of P339.4 million this year.

The provincial government’s budget is mainly sourced from its annual internal revenue share, which is expected to reach P767 million in 2010. (Allen V. Estabillo/MindaNews)

Three boats and dusk at Lake Sebu

It is one thing seeing Lake Sebu from afar, but it’s another thing exploring the actual lake itself. For Php 350 at Punta Isla Lake Resort, you could hire a motor boat good for 8-10 persons in addition to your personal tour guide and boat man. Their tour guides are native T’bolis and are accredited by the DOT (Department of Tourism), so you get loads of information as well as stunning views of the lake during the boat ride. And I can say is that I truly appreciated the lake more while cruising along its expanse.

http://www.ironwulf.net/wp/wp-content/uploads/2007/09/lake_sebu_xplr_02.jpg
The floating restaurant at the lake

Situated at approximately 1000m (3000feet) above sea level, the municipality of Lake Sebu is considered as the “Summer Capital of Southern Mindanao.” I can attest to this as the air here is very cool especially at nights where air conditioning is no longer needed. In fact there was a short brownout one night while we were sleeping but it didn’t matter since it was very cool anyways. Unlike its northern counterpart of Baguio, the air here is still fresh and most of the structures are still the native huts and houses. And due to this elevation, most of the time the sky can become gray and cloudy, and at times we heard the place is covered with fog with a limited visibility of a couple of feet or more.

http://www.ironwulf.net/wp/wp-content/uploads/2007/09/lake_sebu_xplr_03.jpg
A boatman passing by the Tilapia Farm

Even when we were there, there were some rains and drizzles, but I think we were really fortunate or the weather was on our side, because it rains during our breaks but when we were about to start our tour, the sun would come out. Like during our boat tour, it was after our lunch when the rain abated, then we took the tour. As I noticed, after the rain, colors of nature are more vibrant and the green is a lot greener. We had the pleasure of the company of 4 DPP (Digital Photographer Philippines) forum members whom we met that day at the resort. They came all the way from Davao’s Kidapawan festival and decided to do a little side trip here.

http://www.ironwulf.net/wp/wp-content/uploads/2007/09/lake_sebu_xplr_04.jpg
Lake Sebu is surrounded by forested mountains

Soon we found our boat pulling off from the docks. Our direction was counter clockwise of the whole lake going right passing by the floating restaurant. Soon we were passing by numerous Tilapia Farms and making rounds of the islands. Our guide, Che, began her introductions in English and pointed some facts about the whole municipality. Che is a pretty 15 years old T’Boli, fully garbed in T’boli attire of T’nalak and brass wares and is one of the younger guides there. Despite some bickering and teasing from the DPP members, she managed to handle them well and maintain her composure.

http://www.ironwulf.net/wp/wp-content/uploads/2007/09/lake_sebu_xplr_05.jpg
Che informed us that there are 3 lakes in the municipality of Lake Sebu, Lake Sebu being the largest measuring 354 hectares, Lake Seloton measuring 48 hectares but being the deepest and Lake Lahit with an area of 24 hectares. In Lake Sebu, there are 3 islands which are inhabited, the largest of them is called Isla Grande. Most of their livelihood is from fishing, particularly Tilapia which is very abundant here.

http://www.ironwulf.net/wp/wp-content/uploads/2007/09/lake_sebu_xplr_06.jpg
Scenic lake houses at the island of Isla Grande

Cruising along Lake Sebu made me appreciate the place more as I really saw how majestic it is. Imagine a large lake like this high up the mountains. Somehow I think this also a large crater similar to Taal. It’s like being in a bowl and you are surrounded by a stunning vista of mountainscapes often covered with clouds.

http://www.ironwulf.net/wp/wp-content/uploads/2007/09/lake_sebu_xplr_08.jpg
More green and sweeping vistas on our way back

There is a local myth on how the Lake came to be. A time ago, a local princess had a dream of coming to the mountain lands of Sebu. The princess saw a big leaf. When she opened it up a frog leaped out along with a gush of water which flooded the land and became the lake. From the heavens she threw here pythons to the earth which formed the islands at the lake. And in order for the princess to pass by the lake, her brother parted the islands. The name Sebu actually came from the loyal servant of the princess who fell and died on this lake during his service.

http://www.ironwulf.net/wp/wp-content/uploads/2007/09/lake_sebu_xplr_09.jpg
More scenic lake houses on other islands

Lake Sebu is truly one of God’s creative wonders. Literally a large food bowl given to the locals in the area since the lake is abundant of fish and never dries up no matter what.

http://www.ironwulf.net/wp/wp-content/uploads/2007/09/lake_sebu_xplr_10.jpg
The red roofed structure is their tourism center. Also a nice vantage point in viewing the whole Lake Sebu

The tour around the lake took less than an hour, but it was an educational coupled with breath taking sceneries. Really makes you appreciate the beauty of Lake Sebu itself.

Alliance Tuna sees improved 2010 prospects

:banana::banana::banana:

http://businessmirror.com.ph/home/companies/20159-alliance-tuna-sees-improved-2010-prospects.html

LISTED canned tuna manufacturer Alliance Tuna International Inc. (ATII) is optimistic of prospects next year as it expects to start operations of a facility in General Santos that can produce 2 metric tons of packed salmon a day. The products will be exported mainly to Hong Kong and Japan.

The company had also acquired in January the majority stake in a New Zealand firm for NZ$1.15 million (about P32 million). Apart from the equity investment, ATII will also extend a loan of NZ$150,000 to Prime Foods, which will earn interest at market rate after the first year.

Alliance Tuna is one of the leading canned tuna manufacturers in the Philippines. Its facilities are located in the southern part of the Philippines with a daily capacity output of 140 metric tons per day.

As this developed, ATII said exports increased by almost a fifth despite the decline in prices that continued to weigh down on sales.

In a financial report, Alliance Tuna said it shipped 782 container loads of canned tuna, or 113 units more than the same period last year. However, in terms of value the company posted revenues of only $36.5 million, a drop from $39 million last year.

“The primary reason for the lower sales, in spite of a 17-percent increase in volume, has been a decrease in the selling prices. On account of the steep decline of tuna raw materials prices, making it up in volume was not enough to offset the much reduced selling prices,” said Alliance Tuna.

Profitability growth also slowed when the firm reported a net income of $1.81 million from the January-to-September period last year representing a 33-percent decline.

Alliance Tuna’s primary business is in the processing, canning and export of canned tuna in the institutional and retail can sizes.

In terms of exports, Europe continues to be the primary destination, accounting for 88 percent of sales. North America made up for 8 percent with the balance coming from non-traditional markets like Japan, Australia and Africa.

Of the total export sales, retail packs account for more than half while the institutional pack accounted for 41 percent and the balance of 5 percent represent fish meal sales.

6 dead in Philippines fireworks blazes

GENERAL SANTOS CITY, Philippines, Dec. 25 (UPI) -- A single firecracker set off a deadly blaze in a row of fireworks stores in General Santos City in the Philippines early Christmas Day, authorities said.

Three women were killed, GMA News tv reported. An 8-year-old boy suffered serious burns.

The blaze began just after midnight, Marcelo Pintac, the municipal police director, said. He said one firecracker fell to the ground, hitting one of the stores and setting off its contents.

A few hours earlier, a similar fire in Cebu killed three people. Authorities said it was also caused by someone setting off a firecracker near a row of stalls to test it.

Two of the victims of the General Santos City blaze died at the scene and the third died in a hospital.

Smoking and setting off fireworks near fireworks stalls are banned.

GenSan in ABS-CBN’s New Year Countdown Coverage

GenSan News Online Magazine is pleased to announce that General Santos City has been included in the list of cities in the Philippines where media conglomerate ABS-CBN will be holding a nationwide simultaneous countdown to the New Year and will broadcast it all over the world where TFC is avelabol!!!!! Now, isn’t that great?!

http://i813.photobucket.com/albums/zz52/fmdear/1-45.jpg
"FIREWORKS LIGHT UP THE SKY OF GENSAN IN THIS AWARD-WINNING PHOTO BY LEONARD PE"

Earlier today, Bariles was privileged to attend a coordination meeting between ABS-CBN and the City Mayor’s Office to map out plans to ensure that the New Year Countdown in GenSan will be a success.

This comes right at an opportune time for the city which has been hit by an unfortunate firecracker-related accident last Christmas Day which resulted to the deaths of three residents. Being included in their nationwide coverage and the only city in Mindanao to be afforded this privilege means that ABS-CBN still has the faith and trust in the city’s ability to mount a festive New Year’s Eve celebration and speaks much of the city’s clout with regard to newsworthiness in the global arena.

From the meeting, it was decided that the venue of the countdown, which now becomes the culmination of PASKO SA GENSAN 2009 will be at the City Hall Drive, FLAGPOLE area at the Plaza Heneral Santos right across the City Hall Building.

From 11:30am, ABS-CBN’S MOR FM deejays will be hosting a program featuring the best talents of the Tuna Capital.

Little Grand Winner Philip Nadela (who hails from Barangay Fatima) will highlight the program and will sing the KAPAMILYA Christmas Song, “STAR NG PASKO”.
Expected to join Philip in the song are City Mayor Jun Acharon, Congresswoman Darlene Custodio, and the other City officials and workers.

After that, the focus will be on Bernadette Sembrano in Manila who will lead the countdown, simultaneously with GenSan and other cities all over the country.

And that’s where all the cities put on an aerial magical show together, including our very own GRAND FIREWORKS DISPLAY courtesy of the City Government of GenSan, ….. a very fitting end to PASKO SA GENSAN 2009.

HAPPY NEW YEAR GENSAN!!!! HAPPY NEW YEAR TO ALL THE GENERALS ALL OVER THE WORLD!!!
So, tell your family and friends about it and join us for the ABS-CBN Nationwide Countdown to the New Year, 11:30-12:00 midnight, December 31, 2009 at the Flagpole Area, City Hall Drive, GenSan.

‘BIGBY’S’ has always been and continues to be committed to offering the best in quality food products at such reasonable prices, fast and friendly service, well-designed and immaculately clean facilities and of course, the signature Bigby’s hospitality. These are the key elements which have made Henrick Kelly Yu, the President and Franchisor of Bigby’s, and his business partners which include Joanna Cris Yu, operate successfully from their first Bigby’s Café in Cagayan de Oro which they opened in December 8, 1998, to our ninth branch in Davao City, the Bigby’s Café at the Metro Lifestyle Center along Torres-Jacinto Extension. The good news before the year ends is that Bigby’s Café and Restaurant will now revolutionize the dining experience of residents of General Santos City. Bigby’s GenSan is the third franchise branch of the Big Z Quality Foods Corporation which I head,” said a jubilant Carmen “Eng-eng” Relampagos-Zurita.

that is soon to rise but a national icon... im 101% sure that as soon as a banner.tarp will be posted____________________soon to open.....gensan will keep her record to one of the most promising cities to invest it the south.as of this time the project is 95%
pushing through....

Regarding the source let me say....101% trusted...This just mean more employment with Manila based salary scale and additional income in our city govt...

More and less
By Isagani Zarate
Philippine Daily Inquirer

UNDER THE CANOPY OF A BLUE MOON, I greeted the dawning of 2010 in the company of family and friends in the country’s tuna capital, the port city of General Santos. My son XYZ specially requested that we spend the holidays in my old hometown, as he, too, wants to experience and behold the night sky lit by a colorful fireworks display, which is banned in Davao City.

It has been more than a decade since I last celebrated Christmas and New Year’s eve in General Santos City or “GenSan,” now known as the home of boxing champ Manny “Pacman” Pacquiao, and, of late, home too of funny girl Melissa “Melai” Cantiveros of “Pinoy Big Brother” fame. On the downside, it is now the unwilling host of some of the suspects in the monstrous Ampatuan Massacre—with 31 journalists, majority of whom were city residents, among the 57 victims.

GenSan—after all the bustle of creeping urbanity—still maintains the southern warmth that I remembered from my childhood. There is now in its midst a sprawling Robinson’s mall with all its metropolitan trappings. But, a very close friend, who returned for a class reunion after decades of absence, was amused to see that most residents still use the tricycle as their main mode of transportation.

For an absentee son, GenSan’s “blue moon” became a quiet witness in unloading with candor the buried, yet still ignored, passions. Indeed, GenSan was and still is a good place to let go of the disquiet of years past, and also, to recharge. Last Saturday, it was apt that I and my lawyer-colleagues spent in GenSan our first working day for 2010 by meeting with relatives of the massacre victims. After the meeting, I knew I will be seeing more of my old GenSan in the days to come.

* * *

I made an informal survey on the 10 things or events people wanted “more and less” in 2010. The varied responses—some very political, others very personal—in general reflect the signs of the times. I asked an equal number of men and women, but of those who responded, almost 70 percent were women, including two who wanted more “great sex” in 2010. Here are excerpts of the responses:

“More committed and progressive lawyers who can really laugh and joke around on the side … Less and less human rights violations and violators and less of GMA’s kind and the likes.”—Atty. Beverly Musni, Karapatan, Cagayan de Oro City

“Drink less, exercise more. Negative thoughts less, read more. Hate less, rest more. Cry less, pray more. Frown less, thank more. Protect more my body and soul.”—Atty. Weng Licas, convenor of UPLM Women’s Caucus

“MORE: victorious Makabayan candidates, pro-people laws and ordinances, faith-based support for the RH programs and women legislators. LESS: worries, of GMA and her minions and burns while cooking.”—Angela Librado-Trinidad, city councilor, Davao City

“A decisive, competent and benevolent leader in 2010; a fair, efficient and speedy justice system and for the new president to send at least 10 corrupt big fish officials to jail.”—Jose Cadiz, former national president, Integrated Bar of the Philippines

“Less GMA times ten.”—Bayan Muna Rep. Neri Javier Colmenares

“Less corruption, accidents, wars, anger, envy and wasting. More sharing, Church-going, exercise, reading, writing and listening.”—Teacher Red Amparo, Davao City

“No more EJKs, enforced disappearance, torture. No more cheating in elections. No more wars. WISH LIST: new government that is accountable, transparent and corrupt-free. Greater love of country and people. Universal and better health care system.”—Cookie Diokno, secretary general, Free Legal Assistance Group (FLAG)

“MORE: justice served; unity and understanding; saving the environment and victories for change. LESS: political killings; poverty; corruption; militarism/fascism and no more GMA.”—Tyrone Velez, journalist, Davao City

“MORE: laughter, selflessness and love for myself. LESS: being sad, drinking, smoking, and giving in to reckless abandonment.”—Atty. Petite Principe, Davao City

“MORE: progressive people in Congress; budget for health and social services; rights violators, corrupt officials and warlords jailed. LESS: trivial reforms, VAWC and corporate greenwash.”—Dr. Jean Lindo, advocate for women’s rights and the environment

“MORE: public servants with integrity and honor; health-conscious lifestyle and quality time for the family and to pray. LESS: health problems; traditional politics and politicians and intrigues.”—Atty. Mamer Villarosa-Dumagan, Davao City

“MORE: dedication and honesty from government officials; funds for government-run hospitals; hard-working Congress representatives and support for environmental programs. LESS: global conflict; US presence in the country and elsewhere; foreign mining companies and private armies.”—Rep. Luz C. Ilagan, Gabriela Women’s Party

“MORE: free education at all levels in the public educational system; abrogation of unequal treaties with the US and ouster of GMA. LESS: increase in the prices of prime commodities; migration of Filipinos to foreign countries and migration of rural folks to urban centers.”—Joel Virador, consultant on the peace process, Davao City government

“MORE: accountability in governance; improvement in peoples’ lives.”—Dodong Solis, broadcast journalist, Davao City

“MORE: political leaders who will truly fight for the rights of the Moro people. LESS: former Moro revolutionary leaders who turn their backs on the justness of the Moro people’s struggle for self-determination. WISH: GMA to lose in the elections.”—Amira Lidasan, Moro rights activist

“MORE: to give without expecting anything in return. LESS: Facebook.”—Rea Mylene Gajo, Facebook fanatic, Davao City

More growth seen for trade in Koronadal
by Allen V Estabillo/MindaNews

KORONADAL CITY (MindaNews/04 January) – The surging trade and investments activities here and the neighboring areas were seen to pick up even more this year with the completion of the ongoing transfer of regional line agencies and departments of Region 12 or Southwestern Mindanao to the new regional center in the city.

Carlito Uy, president of the South Cotabato Chamber of Commerce and Industry Inc., said Monday they expect the more than 20 regional offices who have yet to fully transfer here to move in full swing within the next six months as directed earlier by the Regional Development Council (RDC) of Region 12 and the Office of the Presidential Adviser on New Government Centers.

“This is a major development in terms of our economic and business prospects because we’re specifically looking at an emerging market here comprising around 12,000 people,” he said.

During the last three years, he said local businesses have seen an increase in their consumer or customer base as employees of various regional offices started to relocate here from their former homes in Cotabato City.

The Office of the Presidential Adviser on New Government Centers earlier ordered the full transfer of Region 12’s regional seat and center here from Cotabato City in compliance with the new regional configuration mandated by Executive Order 304 issued on March 30, 2004 by President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo.

The reorganized region covers the provinces of South Cotabato, Sarangani, North Cotabato, Sultan Kudarat and the cities of Cotabato, General Santos, Kidapawan, Koronadal and Tacurong.

The National Economic and Development Authority (NEDA)-Region 12, which acts as the RDC’s secretariat, reported that at least 40 of the 65 regional line agencies and departments have already completed their transfer here.

Uy said they expect the full transfer of the regional center here to mainly benefit the area’s housing, services and commercial or trading sectors.

“The demands for more housing units and various services, especially on food, will increase as these moves will continue,” he said.

Uy said the transfer of the regional offices and their workers will also bring in additional opportunities for the area’s tourism sector, especially in terms of the holding of seminars and conventions.

In September last year, the city hosted the annual Mindanao Business Conference (Minbizcon) and three other major trade fairs that generated hundreds of millions worth of sales and new investments.

During the Minbizcon, the Department of Trade and Industry said local businesses generated around P628 million in sales and investment commitments during its business matching activities.

“To sustain these gains, we’re planning to hold additional business-related activities that will further pump-prime our local economy,” he said.

On Thursday, the city government here will launch various business-related activities as part of the city’s week-long 10th Hinugyaw Festival and 70th foundation anniversary celebration. (Allen V. Estabillo/MindaNews)

Sarangani Highlands

Sarangani Highlands is located on a hilltop overlooking Sarangani Bay. It has an awesome view of both the sea, downtown Gensan and majestic Mt. Parker and Mt. Matutum on a clear day.
Sarangani Highlands was brought about initially by the love for plants and landscaping of the owner, Dr. Ana Belle L. Abella, M.D. Due to the fantastic view, a lot of people encouraged her to put a restaurant in the garden.
While in Sarangani Highlands, you get really closer to nature. It takes great pride in its beautiful landscaping. Lush plants, flowers and a neatly trimmed lawn welcome you upon entering the garden.

Italians to invest in 5 provinces in 2010

Developer ItalPinas Inc. (ITPI) is pouring in hundred millions of investment in five provinces in the country next year by constructing the Green building.

Romolo Nati, chief executive officer of ItalPinas said they have already started the construction of a ten-storey condominium in Cagayan de Oro City which is expected to be completed in 14 months or by early 2011.

The more than 1,000 square meter property in Cagayan has a total investment of P180 million and the first Green building to be constructed in Asia and in the entire province of Mindanao.

Nati said they are also targeting to build the same facility in Palawan, Mindoro, [B]General Santos and Davao which shows great potential for property development.

Asked why they have chosen the provinces instead of Metro Manila, Nati explained that the reason is merely because Metro Manila is already congested unlike the provinces particularly Cagayan de Oro.

“We did a market survey and we like Cagayan de Oro because it has higher middle class market not to mention its fast-growing economy,” Nati said.

”We are not into Metro Manila because our idea is to focus in the provinces,” he added.

According to Nati since their units are sold lower than P3 million, they expect more Filipinos to avail of their projects whose designs are tailored in Europe, and also because it can produce its own energy through the use of a special solar panel “to maximize and optimize energy use.”

“Our goal is to reduce energy consumption…. Our building will save around 33 percent of energy,” he said.

Nati said they are targeting the overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) market and the migrants abroad.

Currently, there are over eight million OFWs employed in 194 countries and majority of them are in the United States, Middle East, Canada, Hong Kong and in Europe.

ItalPinas is a partnership between an Italian firm and the Constellation Energy Corp. headed by its chairman Jose P. Leviste Jr.

Nati said for their new projects they are planning to enter into a joint venture with other existing companies in the country.

They also plan to tap local banks for their funding requirements should their other survey yielded positive results.

”At present we are talking with some private investors,” Nati said adding that with the “market seems to be very good, we may not need bank financing.”

jan 2010 Falling In Love With Cafe Amoree

http://i813.photobucket.com/albums/zz52/fmdear/1-54.jpg

One of the latest addition to Gensan’s watering hole is Cafe Amoree

Amore is Italian for “love,” adding another “e” speaks of a deeper love

Located in the Dacera Commercial Complex along Mabuhay Road

This unassuming coffee shop offers a relaxing experience for everyone

The interiors are well-designed and their seats are really cozy

http://i813.photobucket.com/albums/zz52/fmdear/2-32.jpg

http://i813.photobucket.com/albums/zz52/fmdear/5-10.jpg

Owned by couple-power Ricky and Tess Almanzor

Cafe Amoree offers a variety of coffee choices, both hot and cold

Their cakes and pastries are oh-so-heavenly delectable

Try their signature pasta dishes: Pasta Al Tonno and Creamy Chicken Pasta

http://i813.photobucket.com/albums/zz52/fmdear/6-10.jpg

http://i813.photobucket.com/albums/zz52/fmdear/8-5.jpg

http://i813.photobucket.com/albums/zz52/fmdear/7-6.jpg

Cafe Amoree also offers a conference room that can hold up to 20 persons

Amenities like sound system and lcd projector with wide screen come in handy

They have a private space for the more discreet customers at the back

As you can see, Cafe Amoree is just about ready for anything!

http://i813.photobucket.com/albums/zz52/fmdear/10-3.jpg

http://i813.photobucket.com/albums/zz52/fmdear/9-4.jpg

I must admit that I fell in love with the place

Let’s forget the fact that their chief barista used to work with a top cafe in Manila.

Nor the superb and excellent service delivered by their crew.

And don’t mind their fast wifi service too!

Cafe Amoree is just love, actually.

I’d recommend it to my friends, anytime, all the time!

Do check them at 554-2173 and look for Store Manager Maryvil Araniego.

PPA surprised by increase in cargo volume in 2009
Economy
Written by VG Cabuag / Reporter
Monday, 04 January 2010 20:29

THE Philippines Ports Authority (PPA) is surprised by the agency’s positive cargo volume in 2009, despite the slowdown of the Philippine economy.

PPA assistant to the general manager Raul Santos explained that PPA never expected that cargo volume will post a modest growth last year compared with its 2008 performance.

“Unexpectedly, PPA will achieve its target for the year and we are happy with that,” Santos said, adding that according to its cargo data, the agency may post some 5-percent increase in its volume for 2009.

Based on the 2007 to 2010 projections of PPA, the agency would handle thin cargo throughputs and its growth would be limited to about 5 percent annually during the period.

The growth will only be concentrated in six out of the 10 major ports of the country.

The 10 ports, on the other hand, are the Manila North Harbor, Manila South Harbor, Manila International Container Terminal (MICT), Batangas Port, Cagayan de Oro, Davao, Iloilo, Zamboanga, General Santos and Ozamis.

The ports that are projected to have 5-percent growth during the period include MICT, South Harbor, Cagayan de Oro, Davao, Zamboanga and General Santos, while those ports projected to have only 3-percent growth were Iloilo, North Harbor, Batangas and Ozamis.

Based on official figures, however, PPA cargo throughput during January to October 2009 plummeted by 8 percent to 118.45 million metric tons, from the previous year’s 128.63 million metric tons.

Cagayan de Oro port suffered the most decline, accounting for half of the total decline of 10.18 million metric tons for the entire PPA ports, with the government citing a weaker trading in the region.

Cagayan de Oro, a facility operated by privately held Oroport Cargohandling Services Inc., reported a drop of 4.88 million metric tons for the 10-month period, while Surigao port also declined by 3.2 million metric tons for the period.

Other ports that reported a decline include the oil terminals in Limay, which dropped by 1.23 million metric tons, and Batangas Port, down by 1.66 million metric tons, while Manila North Harbor posted a decline of 600,000 metric tons.

Both foreign and domestic cargoes contracted during the period, PPA said.

Foreign cargo dipped by 10 percent to 61.22 million metric tons, while domestic cargoes also decreased by more than 5 percent to 57.23 million metric tons.

“The same downtrend was observed in import and export cargoes,” PPA said in a report.

Export of cargoes decreased by 16 percent, or about 4.58 million metric tons to 23.16 million tons, with Manila South Harbor, Port of Limay and Cagayan de Oro taking most of the decline.

“Although positive trend in foreign cargo volume—of both import and export—was recorded at MICT and at the Ports of San Fernando, Puerto Princesa, Iloilo, Davao and General Santos, this has not sufficiently managed to offset the greater volume decrease in most ports,” PPA said in a report.

Taiwan officials visit corn demo farms in Region 12

Koronadal City (PIA12/aca) -- Top officials of the Food and Fertilizer Technology Center (FFTC) of Taiwan visited corn demonstration farms in Alabel, Sarangani to see the adaptability of their home-grown hybrid corn here in region 12.

DA-12 Regional Executive Director Tommy A. Ala commended the Taiwanese delegation headed by FFTC Director Dr. Jen Chyuan Lee and FFTC Consultant Dr. Wen Shyong Chen for their support to the on-going corn variety field testing in Sarangani Province.

"Variety trial is now on its second cropping season and I am delighted to learn that the results so far are very promising," Ala said.

In Taiwan and the Philippines, agriculture play a major role in the society and economy. As such, efforts and resources are carried out to improve the profitability of agriculture for stakeholders and population.

Taiwan has been performing well in the achievement of their goals in the agriculture sector and the Department of Agriculture is of earnest hopes that can replicate these successes for Filipino farmers and population.

Dr. Lee together with his visiting team, expressed gratitude for the warm welcome given them.

Lee said, they are willing to share all their expertise and production technologies to Filipino farmers. They are also willing to coordinate with the local officials and private sectors to help farmers increase production and income.

Dir. Ala also presented to the guests the Corn Industry Profile of region 12 as he also explained that the region ranked No. 3 nationwide in terms of Corn Production Performance in 2008.

The region leads in terms of total corn area which accounted to 462,617 hectares. It constitutes 31% the total agricultural land area of 1,504,884 hectares. The region has also the highest number of corn clusters organized with 204 corn clusters with a minimum of 200 hectares per each cluster.

He also presented the corn investment opportunities that the region has to offer. These opportunities include Package of Production Technologies, Storage and Post-Harvest Facilities and Processing of Feed Grains.

"We believe that the key to achieving our goal towards the development of agriculture, particularly the corn sector, is more targeted and meaningful cooperation and assistance from Taiwan on these investment opportunities," director Ala said. (PIA12/aca) [top]

Koronadal unveils four-day festivities to celebrate 70th anniversary (http://positivenewsmedia.net/am2/publish/Events_26/Koronadal_unveils_four-day_festivities_to_celebrate_70th_anniversary.shtml)

KORONADAL CITY, Jan. 6 (PNA) – The city government here will open Thursday a four-day grand festivity as homage to the city’s founding 70 years ago and its continuing development as one of the fast-growing economic and cultural hub in the country’s southern corridor.

Koronadal City Mayor Fernando Miguel said this year’s celebration mainly focuses on the gains made as well as the challenges faced by the city from its establishment as a settlement area and a municipality several decades ago.

“This is mainly a tribute to our people, especially the diverse mix of cultures, who helped shape up our city into what it is now today,” he said.

The mayor said the city’s 70th foundation anniversary celebration, which carries the theme: “Culture Shapes Our Future,” will be highlighted by the 10th Hinugyaw Festival slated January 7 to 10.

Among the festivity’s main attractions are the Korona Parada (crown parade), drumline competition, Hinugyaw dance showdown, farmers’ festival parade, products exposition and trade fair, street dancing competition and balikbayan and pioneer settlers’ night and fellowship.

The celebrations will be spiced up by the nightly entertainments and shows featuring various celebrities as well as the popular Marbeleño mardi gras, street part and grand fireworks display during the anniversary day on Jan. 10.

City Councilor Ellen Grace Albios, who was designated as festival director, said the city government allocated some P6.2 million for this year’s celebrations or almost doubled last year’s budget of P3.5 million.

She said they increased the funding to enhance the concept of the competitions and their corresponding prices that ranges from P50,000 to P150,000.

“We opened the competitions to contingents coming from other areas and regions unlike the previous years when the participants were mostly locals,” Albios said.

Meantime, City Administrator Marcelita Lucido said they requested Malacañang to declare Jan. 11 as special non-working holiday in the entire city.

She said they decided to move the proposed holiday to Jan. 11 instead of the Jan. 10 official anniversary day as the latter falls on a Sunday.

Koronadal, which became a component city of South Cotabato province in 2000, is the regional center of Region 12 or Southwestern Mindanao and is considered one of the region’s emerging centers for finance, business, education and services.

In 2003, the city was adjudged as the country's most competitive small-sized city based on a survey conducted by the Asian Institute of Management's Policy Center and the Philippine Chamber of Commerce and Industry.

Two years later, the city landed among the top 10 most competitive cities in the country based on the same survey.

It was also adjudged in 2005 and 2006 as one of the most business-friendly cities in Mindanao.(PNA)

Mindanao swine producers want a separate biosecurity region
by MindaNews
Thursday, 07 January 2010 23:43

GENERAL SANTOS CITY (MindaNews/7 Jan) -- Swine producers in Mindanao want to make the island a separate biosecurity region so they could push anew the move to ship cut pork products abroad.

The Philippines’ first attempt at exporting pork meat products was supposed to start in December 2008, only to be obstructed by the detection of the ebola reston virus in hog farms in Luzon.

Mindanao swine producers are clamoring to separate Mindanao from Luzon and Visayas in terms of biosecurity jurisdiction so they could pave the way for the growth of the swine industry in the island.
“The immediate need to regionalize Mindanao as a separate biosecurity region will deliver a great impact to Mindanao’s key industries and sectors,” said Emilio V. Escobillo Jr., chair of the South Cotabato Swine Producers Association (SOCOSPA).

He said Mindanao pork producers are looking forward to being granted a separate biosecurity region, especially so with the positive feedback from Singapore in resuming the Philippine-Singapore pork trade.

Escobillo said that Mindanao, which has been declared by the Office International des Epizooties (OIE) or World Organization for Animal Health as free from the foot-and-mouth disease, supplies most of the pork for Metro Manila and has been recognized by Singapore as a source of healthy pork meat.

But the head office of the Department of Agriculture in Metro Manila suspended what could have been the country’s first foreign trading of pork meat to Singapore in the wake of the ebola reston virus discovery in several hogs raised in Luzon in 2008.

SOCOSPA lamented with the arrangement that Mindanao is lumped with Luzon and Visayas in the reporting of biosecurity issues.

The group proposed that the biosecurity regionalization of Mindanao be separate from the national, citing examples in the United States, Canada and India. In these countries, states or regions are strategically protected under safety protocols as not to hinder potential market and industry setbacks, SOCOSPA explained.

The group proposed that a government and private organizations-assisted Mindanao Pork Producers Council shall be created to lead the direction in the biosecurity regionalization of Mindanao’s swine industry.

Escobillo said that the immediate implementation of Mindanao’s regionalization “will open new doors of strategic and tangible export markets.”

Initiatives for the country to enter the foreign pork meat market, through Mindanao, had been in place through the modern facilities set up by Matutum Meat Packing Corp. Based in Polomolok, South Cotabato, it is the only company in the country cleared by Singapore’s Agri-Food and Veterinary Authority to ship pork meat products in the island-state.

Earlier, Stephen G. Castillo, Matutum Meat general manager, expressed optimism the Philippines could penetrate other Asian countries if it could enter Singapore’s pork meat market. (MindaNews)

Exploring Lake Sebu (http://mb.com.ph/articles/236993/exploring-lake-sebu)
By Cecilia S. Angeles

http://mb.com.ph/sites/default/files/sebu.jpg

Lake Sebu (with and S, not a C) in South Cotobato is the home of the T’bolis. Three thousand feet above sea level with an altitude of 984 feet at the southern Tiruray highlands, it offers unmatched scenery. This picturesque place offers picture-perfect seascapes framed by rugged hills, distant mountain ranges tracing the endless horizon.

An important water shed in the south, Lake Sebu irrigates the virgin lands of Sultan Kudarat and South Cotobato. It used to be a village of Surallah, but today, it has become a tourist place right there at the Tiruray Highlands which boast of rolling hills and gliding mountains crowned with evergreen trees. This is the homeland of the T’bolis, a highland ethnic tribe producing t’nalak, the colorful, hand-made cloth material complemented occasionally with colorful beads or brass jewelry. Lake Sebu is also the Ubo and Tiruray.

I thank my student at PWU and a dance director of the famous Bayanihan Dance Company, Leo Laurence Lorilla, and his family for taking me there to cover the T’nalak festival and to visit this ethnic country in Southern Cotobato. It was a weekend trip on board PAL to Koronadal City via General Santos on a Saturday and then as early as 10:00 a.m. the next day, I boarded the same PAL that landed an hour ago and took me to Manila in time for my lecture in Composition at Fort Santiago.

Nature’s topography designed Lake Sebu from three mountain lakes: Lake Siluton, refutedly the deepest; Lake Lahit, the smallest; and Lake Sebu, the largest water body. These three lakes are situated in the middle of Allah Valley.

Watershed Forest Reserve cultures tilapia, shrimps, snakes and ducks – sources of income for the ethnic residents. The valley areas are devoted to agriculture. Seven waterfalls known as the Dongon Waterfalls highlight the place. Two of the main falls are accessible to tourists, and the rest to the more adventurous ones who get the thrill of crossing jungles, clinging to vines, climbing perpendicular hills to reach them. And these falls are worth one’s physical effort.

Cafee Firenzo to anchor new GenSan restaurant complex

If you have been a frequent traveller along the GenSan National Highway near the East Asia Royale Hotel for the past two months, you must have noticed this conspicuous presence of an establishment which is undergoing frenzied construction right beside the 18th Hole Driving Range entrance alley.

http://i813.photobucket.com/albums/zz52/fmdear/1-55.jpg
"THIS MYSTERIOUS BUILDING ALONG THE NATIONAL HIGHWAY BESIDE THE 18TH HOLE DRIVING RANGE WILL BE GENSAN'S NEWEST DINING COMPLEX"

The two-story building, now almost nearing completion sits in a half-hectare lot beside the Mabuhay I.T. Park at the back end. Reportedly owned by a consortium led by Mitchy’s Car Accessories, Davao City’s Chimes and Davao Golden Hardware, among others, the edifice will house various dining establishments meant to cater to the AB market of Soccsksargen.

One is this is Cafee Firenzo, a Davao-based coffee shop which also has two branches in the Durian City and a branch in Tagum City. Read Davao blogger Blogie Robillo’s take on the place by CLICKING HERE. Blogalag’s blog post can be accessed by CLICKING HERE.

Other occupants of the 1480 square meter available space of the building include fine-dining restaurants to be put up by more investors from Davao.

Only one existing local GenSan restaurant will be joining them, having passed the standards and requirements of the building owners. This distinction goes to “Gusteau’s Shrimps and Crabs“, which GenSan News Online Mag featured last year. The resto is one of the many along the famous dining strip in Lagao -Tiongson Arcade. Take a bow, owner Allan Lopez.

Although we still have no idea on the identities of the other establishments in this new GenSan restaurant complex which, according to Bariles’ source, will be unveiled on April 2010, Bariles is hoping that it would include a Thai Restaurant, an authentic Japanese restaurant, a Mediterranean restaurant, a purely seafood restaurant (to cater to non-pork eaters) and a resto-bar with a nightly band.

But whether they materialize or not, and whatever new dining haunts would fill in this new GenSan restaurant complex, will surely strengthen the Tuna Capital’s bid to be the entertainment and dining capital of South Central Mindanao.

Australian gov’t okays Chinese firm’s bid for Tampakan mining project
by MIndaNews
Tuesday, 12 January 2010 00:00

GENERAL SANTOS CITY (MindaNews/11 January) – Acting on the recommendation of the Foreign Investment Review Board (FIRB), the Australian government’s Federal Treasurer approved a Chinese firm’s takeover bid for an Australian company that controls a major copper and gold mining venture which is facing stiff opposition from the local Catholic church.

Gavan Collery, corporate affairs manager of Indophil Resources NL which currently owns at least a third of Tampakan project, said that Zijin Mining Group had told them of the development.
The Tampakan project covers three provinces of Mindanao provinces.

“Indophil welcomes the Australian government’s approval, and the timely manner in which it was considered and delivered. [The] Australian government approval was one of the key conditions of the Zijin bid for Indophil,” Collery said.

A successful takeover of Indophil by Zijin, the largest gold producer and the third largest copper producer in China, would make the former a minority partner in the Tampakan project, which is also facing security threats from the communist New People’s Army rebels.

Since 2008, communist guerillas had launched at least two attacks against Sagittarius Mines, Inc., the Philippine company pursuing the Tampakan project.

Xstrata Copper, the fourth world’s largest copper producer, exercises management control at Sagittarius through its 62.5-percent stake in the Tampakan project.

Zijin’s bid for Indophil at A$1.28 per share values the Australian firm at approximately A$545 million on a fully-diluted basis. The bid has been recommended by Indophil’s directors in the absence of a superior offer.

The Tampakan project is the only major asset of Indophil in its portfolio.

Collery said Indophil has also been advised by Zijin that its offer formally opens on January 18, 2010, with dispatch to Indophil shareholders of the offer documents including Zijin’s bidder’s statement on that date.

Indophil’s target’s statement containing the board of directors’ detailed reasons for accepting the offer will be included in this mail-out, the company told the Australian bourse.

Xstrata Copper and Zijin earlier agreed to have the Chinese firm acquire the former’s 19.9-percent stake in Indophil.

Under the terms of the agreement, Xstrata Copper has agreed to sell its shareholding in Indophil to Zijin for A$1.28 per share, subject to certain conditions.

“Zijin’s offer for Indophil clearly demonstrates the attractiveness of the Tampakan project,” Charlie Sartain, Xstrata Copper chief executive officer, said.

Last October, Sagittarius announced a revised resource estimate for the Tampakan project totaling 2.4 billion tons at a grade of 0.6% copper and 0.2 grams per ton gold and containing 13.5 million tons of copper and 15.8 million ounces of gold, using a 0.3% copper cut-off grade.

A feasibility study is currently under way for the Tampakan project and is expected to be completed during the first half of 2010.

Sagittarius is also on track to complete by the end of this year a comprehensive Environmental and Social Impact Assessment for the project, including extensive specialist studies and stakeholder engagement activities, Xstrata Copper said. (MindaNews)

Nagiging mas impersonal na ang pagno-nominate nila

Kung dati, nahihiya pa sila for nominating their c0-housemates

Now, it’s really all about surviving and being in the TOP FOUR

JOHAN nominated Paul Jake because he considers the Cebuano a threat

CATHY needs to get rid of Melai in order to win kaya expected ang decision nya

Among all the housemates, PAUL JAKE knows how to play the PBB game

Alam nyang kakampi ni Melai ang buong Pilipinas and Jason was saved because of this

And he knows what will save him from nomination by his housemates

He played the galant knight by sacrificing the HEAD-OF-HOUSEHOLD award for KATH

And that decision also earned him pogi-points from the viewers

TIBO should have learned his lesson by now

Being bossy and acting like you’re Mr. Know-It-All makes one unpopular

HERMES on the other hand has deteriorated from HOT property to COLD banana

Sumobra ang pagkahibang nya kay Cathy kaya dinedma na ang ibang kasama

MARIEL on the other hand is chilling it lately and playing safe

Sa tingin ko sinasadya nya ito habang nagkakalat ang ibang housemates nya

Lima silang nominado this week: Cathy, Tibo, Marielle, Hermes and Melai

I leave it to you, my faithful readers kung sinong gusto nyong ma-evict

But let’s save Melissa by texting BBS MELISSA

Send to 2331 for Globe, TM, Sun Cellular and Bayan Wireless Landline

Or send to 231 for Smart and Talk n Text.

Now na!

Low-cost housing project to rise in Sarangani

ALABEL, Sarangani (MindaNews/10 January) -- A real estate developer, in partnership with the provincial government of Sarangani, will start construction this year of a low-cost housing project in this capital town, officials said. Benirando D. Claudio, chair and president of the Sarangani Land and Property Corp, said it will develop a six-hectare property owned by the provincial government.
Claudio and Sarangani Gov. Miguel Rene A. Dominguez signed the joint venture agreement last week for the development of the housing project called the Capitol Residences.

“Once the Capitol Residences is open, this would also signal the jump-start of the socio-economic development in Alabel as more businesses would come in,” Claudio said.

He said that Capitol Residences will have complete subdivision features for a socialized total package cost of P460,000 per house and lot at present available computation.

He stressed this is the biggest investment this year on top of Conal Holdings Corp., since the housing project would involve costs amounting to P80 million.

Conal Holdings earlier announced it will start construction this year of a $450 million coal-fired power plant in the town of Maasim.

Dominguez said the Capitol Residences project is an initiative of the provincial government to “reduce the housing backlog and improve the provincial employees’ performance and service efficiency,” considering its proximity which is only about 10 to 15 minute-ride to the Capitol complex.

Dominguez said the housing project would prioritize Capitol employees who don’t own a house

“It is a model housing project that the provincial government can be proud of,” the governor said.

The site would be subdivided into 180 housing units with 210 square meters land area and 39.24 sq. meters floor area each unit.

“We made it larger than the normal housing unit size in subdivisions in anticipation of the owners’ plan for improvement,” said the governor.

The provincial government purchased the land at Purok Sto. Niño, barangay poblacion for P6 million and it was agreed that the provincial government would recoup the raw cost plus one peso from the developer through the take out proceeds or equivalent to P33,334 per housing unit.

Vicente Camacho, Acting Provincial Administrator said 180 individual titles have been prepared to avoid ownership problems later on.

The housing project will be implemented through a mortgage with the Home Development Mutual Fund and other private financial institution to help interested and qualified buyers purchase the housing units.

Dominguez said he also wants to share the benefits of this project to the private sector and encourage greater participation from them.

South Cotabato Electric Cooperative, Inc. will provide for the electricity distribution system while the municipal government of Alabel will provide the water system.

The joint venture agreement shall expire upon the completion of land development, housing construction, and collection of all project receivables. (MindaNews)
