Shamcey Supsup’s win in the Bb. Pilipinas 2011 beauty pageant has sparked a clamor from locals for the City Government to give her a hero’s welcome. In various online media, citizens of General Santos City asked for the Local Government Unit to welcome Supsup to a hero’s welcome in the city.
Shamcey Supsup, a local of this city, won the Bb. Pilipinas-Universe crown, in a tight race with 39 other contestants, during the Grand Coronation night at the Araneta Coliseum, Quezon City, April 10. She also bagged the Miss Cream Silk Award, Ambassador of Philippine Airlines, and Miss Talent.
Mayor Darlene Magnolia R. Antonino-Custodio, who was in Araneta Coliseum during the pageant, broke the news to the Generals before the awarding ceremonies was shown over delayed telecast in national television. She said that she is coordinating with the Binibining Pilipinas Charities, Inc. to let Supsup come home before she goes to Sao Paulo, Brazil to compete in the Miss Universe 2011 Pageant.
Supsup is a resident of Brgy. Katangawan, General Santos City. She finished BS Architecture (Magna Cum Laude) at the University of the Philippines-Diliman and topped the July 2010 Architect Licensure Examinations.

Shamcey Supsup will represent the country in the Miss Universe pageant in Brazil in November. Boy Santos
KORONADAL CITY, Philippines — The General Santos City government is getting ready to give this year’s 2011 Bb. Pilipinas-Universe Shamcey Supsup a grand welcome when she returns from Manila.
Supsup, who was born and grew up in village of Katangawan, is considered by the residents of General Santos City as their newest “treasure.”
Supsup, a magna cum laude graduate from the University of the Philippines and a topnotcher in the architecture board exam, won the title last Sunday.
Glenville Gonzales, tourism officer of the city government, said preparations are underway for a motorcade that will bring the 24-year-old pretty “General” around the city’s streets. “General” is a term used to identify a certain resident of the city.
Gonzales said Supsup will be paraded in the city streets to let the residents show their gratitude and for them to see their new treasure.
“She brought glory and honor to General Santos City. She is worthy of emulation. She deserves to be honored,” Gonzales told The STAR in a phone interview.
“Our city is really a ‘home of champions.’”
Gonzales was referring to boxing champions Manny Pacquiao and Nonito Donaire, ABS-CBN’s Pinoy Big Brother winners Gerald Anderson and Melai Cantiveros.
Gonzales said the city government is seriously considering to grant the “Ambassadress of General Santos City” title to Supsup.

GENERAL SANTOS CITY -- An investment mission next month to the International Food Exposition (Ifex) in Manila is expected to generate P500 million worth of new investments for Central Mindanao region, a regional Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) official said.
The Economic Development Committee (EDC) of the Regional Development Council-12 earlier identified six focus industry clusters as a strategy to further enhance the area's development.
Ethel L. Gumana, DTI-Soccsksargen National Economic Research and Business Assistance Center chief, said Central Mindanao is among the featured regions in the Ifex slated on May 12 to 14.
"Our delegates [from the business community] hope to forge joint venture agreements with multinational firms during the business matching activity. There will also be project proposals to the different embassies," she said.
Gumana said the region's participation to the Ifex is in line with efforts to promote awareness of the area's business opportunities.
It also seeks to facilitate linkages between potential investors and project proponents and intensify networking with local and foreign business community and funding organization, she added.
Hopefully, this would lead to the influx of investments in the region and the creation of employment opportunities for the people of Soccsksargen, Gumana said.
The region straddles the provinces of South Cotabato, North Cotabato, Sultan Kudarat and Sarangani and the cities of General Santos, Koronadal, Tacurong, Kidapawan and Cotabato.
The six focus industry clusters earlier identified by the EDC were coffee, muscovado, tourism (culture, adventure and Nature), processed fish, processed fruits, and Information and Communications Technology.
The committee identified the clusters based on their potential market demand, regional coverage and social benefits.
Other products that were also recognized to have growth potentials in the region are palm oil, art crafts, crabs, corn, coconut, rice, processed meat and hogs.
Secretary Luwalhati R. Antonino, chair of the Mindanao Development Authority (Minda), earlier urged Mindanao producers to expand their markets to abroad, by forging marketing links or trade partnerships.
The regional investment mission would join the Ifex exposition with the support also of the Growth with Equity in Mindanao (GEM) program.
Under the oversight of Minda, the GEM program is one of the USAid-funded programs covered by the Mindanao Peace and Development Assistance agreement between the governments of the Philippines and the United States.
Gumana said they have gathered at least 20 projects from local government units and the private sector that will be presented to potential funders and investors during the forthcoming trade mission.

rodincouch April 15th, 2011, 04:24 AM Sagittarius Mines still seeking permits (http://mindanews.com/main/2011/04/13/sagittarius-mines-still-seeking-permits/)
By Bong S. Sarmiento | Wednesday| April 13, 2011
GENERAL SANTOS CITY (MindaNews/12 April)—Buoyed by national government support, Sagittarius Mines, Inc., operator of the massive Tampakan copper-gold project, appeared keen on pushing ahead despite the open-pit ban imposed by the provincial government of South Cotabato.
Constancio Paye, Jr., regional director of the Mines and Geosciences Bureau, said the mining company is preparing to submit the Environmental and Social Impact Assessment (ESIA) within the second quarter of the year.
“The company has already submitted its feasibility study,” he said on Tuesday.
The ESIA will be scrutinized by an environmental impact review committee composed of government scientists and experts from the academe, and if positively assessed shall be among the documents that will be submitted to acquire the Environment Compliance Certificate, Paye said.
The ECC, which is granted by the Environmental Management Bureau, is among the requirements to secure the declaration of mining project feasibility, the key for the mining company to go on commercial stream, he explained.
Sagittarius Mines has been hounded by the open-pit ban of South Cotabato, but Environment Secretary Ramon J.P. Paje reiterated during the Asia Mining Congress in Singapore last week that the national government is committed to pursue the $5.9-billion Tampakan project.
Paje said the Aquino administration vows to resolve the attendant issues prior to the implementation of the Tampakan project.
The official even noted the national government is seriously encouraging Sagittarius Mines to fast-track its commercial timetable from 2016 to 2013, despite also facing stout opposition from the local Catholic Church and security threats from the communist New People’s Army.
Sagittarius Mines, which is managed by Xstrata Copper, the world’s fourth largest copper producer, earlier announced it plans to start commercial production in 2016.
Company officials welcomed the support shown by Aquino government even as South Cotabato Gov. Arthur Pingoy, Jr. stressed that he will implement the provincial environment code that bans open-pit mining.
Mark Williams, Sagittarius Mines general manager for operations and external relations, claimed that their venture “represents an unprecedented opportunity for the Philippines.”
The Tampakan copper-gold project represents the largest undeveloped copper-gold deposits in Southeast Asia. If developed, the mine could be the largest in the Philippines and among the largest copper mines in the world. Current estimates indicate it could yield an average of 375,000 tons of copper and 360,000 ounces of gold per year over a 17 year life of mine, the company said in a study.
“If developed, the Tampakan Project, will generate significant economic benefits that will stimulate the Philippine economy and will be potentially life-changing for many Filipinos,” said Williams. “With a required capital investment of US$5.9 billion, the Tampakan Project would be the largest foreign direct investment in the Philippines.”
Williams estimated that the Tampakan project would contribute an average of 1% to the annual gross domestic product of the Philippines, and provide around 10,000 jobs during construction, and approximately 2,000 during operation.
Sagittarius Mines is currently finalizing its ESIA for the proposed mine, he said.
Further environmental studies are underway for the associated infrastructure which includes a 500-megawatt power station, port, a copper-gold concentrate pipeline and power transmission lines, Williams said. (Bong Sarmiento/MindaNews)

Taegon April 17th, 2011, 01:48 AM P400-M veggie trading center going up in Benguet
By Leila B. Salaverria

MANILA, Philippines—The country's “salad bowl” will soon have its own wholesale trading and processing facility that is intended to help farmers by making vegetable and fruit trading faster.
The P400-million Agri-Pinoy Trading Center (APTC) is expected to be completed before the end of the year, according to Agriculture Secretary Proceso Alcala.
In a statement, Alcala said it will be the biggest and most modern agricultural wholesale trading and processing center in the country. It will house a modern processing facility that would turn vegetables into ready-to-cook “chop suey” packs, vegetable chips and starch.
The facility would rise on a four-hectare lot in La Trinidad, Benguet, and will be funded jointly by the Department of Agriculture, the provincial and municipal governments of Benguet and La Trinidad, and Benguet Representative Ronald Cosalan. The modern processing facility will be assisted by a $2.5-million grant from the Korea International Cooperation Agency.
Alcala also said the center would complement the existing trading post near the La Trinidad Municipal Hall, and is expected to make the trading process—from unloading to the payment of delivered items—faster. It would also lessen spoilage and wastage, he added.
The Benguet APTC was designed by the Development Academy of the Philippines and will feature three large trading areas, cold storage, a solid waste treatment facility, a dormitory and lounge, commercial spaces for a cafeteria, a commercial or cooperative bank, an administration office and offices for farmers’ cooperatives.
It will also have parking areas for delivery trucks and refrigerated vans, and other ancillary support facilities.
Several farmers would have to be relocated because the center will be built on their land. During the ceremonial launch of the APTC on April 13, Alcala handed over P625,000 in partial payment to the affected farmers. They will be relocated in nearby farms in Barangay (village) Shilan, La Trinidad, Benguet.
Alcala said his department also intends to put up other agricultural and fishery trading and processing centers in other provinces, including Isabela and Nueva Ecija (for grains and lowland vegetables); Iloilo (for grains and fishery products); Cebu (for fishery and processed fruits); Cagayan De Oro (for grains, fruits and vegetables); and General Santos City (for marine and aquaculture products, grains, fruits and vegetables).
He said such centers are part of the administration's plan to assist Filipino farmers and fisherfolk so that they would be globally competitive.

earlat April 18th, 2011, 06:26 AM Chilled tuna, pampano orders, sales from US seafood show reach P869M :banana::banana::banana:
Sunday, 17 April 2011 18:49 Cai U. Ordinario / Reporter
THE Department of Agriculture (DA) said the country made P869 million in sales and booked orders of fresh chilled tuna and pompano at the recently concluded International Boston Seafood Show in Massachusetts, USA.
In a statement, the DA said the sales, which is equivalent to $20.196 million, represented a 187-percent increase over the original target sales of only $10 million for the event.
The 14-man Philippine delegation, headed by Agriculture Assistant Secretary Salvador S. Salacup, reported that fresh chilled tuna and pompano were preferred by US buyers due to their quality, taste and year-round availability.
“The International Boston Seafood Show is one of the best venues to showcase the products of the Philippine seafood industry and further penetrate the USA, which is considered the third-largest consumer of seafood products worldwide,” Salacup said.
The DA said previous buyers and importers immediately placed an initial order and delivery of 500 kilograms per week at P10 per kilogram for the next three months beginning April 2011.
The agency said there is still a vast opportunity for the expansion of Philippine aquatic resource products because many supermarkets and retail stores sold fish, frozen seafood products, shrimps, prawns, crabs, tilapia, tuna loins, squids and octopus, which are currently sourced from Taiwan and China.
A total of 918 exhibitors from 48 countries participated in the event. About 40 percent of the exhibitors were manufacturers, followed by importers and agents, wholesalers and distributors and retailers. A good number is into food services and catering.
Salacup noted that this good development achieved in such an international event further encourages the DA to continue providing support to the fishery and aquatic sector that are deemed critical to the growth of the sector’s export.

General Jimmy Santos April 19th, 2011, 02:21 PM China Bank to expand services in Mindanao
By Carina L. Cayon
Davao City (20 November) -- Seeing the high potentials for investments in Mindanao, the China Banking Corporation is expanding its banking services in seven areas across the island.

According to reports from Philippine Star and Business World, to name just a few, General Santos City has the secondlowest poverty incidence in Mindanao (at 13.98%), based on the latest survey of the National Statistical CoordinationBoard in the region for 2006.
Topping the list is General Santos’ sister city in Soccsksargen, Kidapawan with a poverty rate of only 12.46%.
Th NSCB refers to “poverty incidence” as the “proportion of population (or families) with per capita income which is lessthan the per capita poverty threshold to the total number of pupulation (families) of an area“.
In simple terms, this is an indication of the percentage number of people living below the poverty line in a certain area.
Here then is Mindanao’s Top 10 Cities and Municipalities with the lowest poverty incidence or according to Philstar,“Mindanao’s 10 Richest Municipalities” and Cities:
1. Kidapawan City – 12.46%
2. General Santos City - 13.98%

Fahdingding April 20th, 2011, 04:06 AM Biogas plants light up GenSan
GENERAL SANTOS CITY (PNA) - At least two agro-industrial and residential communities here will soon enjoy free and stable electricity through a P46-million farm-based alternative power generation facilities being developed by a Bangkok-based renewable energy company.
Don Mario Dia, country manager and chief executive officer of Asia Biogas Co. Ltd.-Philippine Bio-Sciences Company, Inc. (PhilBIO), said they are targeting to fully operationalize within the year its two waste-toenergy biogas plants that are located within the swine farm compounds of Bibiana Farms and Mills Inc. here.
The farm facilities, dubbed Bibiana I and II, are located in Barangays Katangawan and Apopong, respectively. They host various agroindustrial ventures and residential subdivisions.
Dia said the biogas power generation projects, which are being developed through the build-operatetransfer (BOT) scheme, are mainly aimed at providing low-cost electricity to Bibiana's farm and milling facilities and at the same time offer an alternative source of power to neighboring local communities.
The biogas projects were so far the first of their kind to be developed in this city and considered among PhilBIO's best showcases in Mindanao, he said.
No less than President Aquino was impressed with the projects' development during an inspection of the main facility at Bibiana I farm in Barangay Katangawan here last week.
"We're not only providing a stable and cost-efficient alternative power source to the farm and local communities but were promoting the use of renewable energy systems, which we really need to give more focus this time given the present state of our environment," Dia told the Philippines News Agency

Fahdingding April 20th, 2011, 04:20 AM Tampakan triggers land speculation by Julito G. Rada
GENERAL SANTOS CITY—The Tampakan mining project of Sagittarius Mines Inc. is expected to spur additional investments in the region from local and foreign companies once it becomes operational in 2016, a local official told reporters over the weekend.
“This will definitely transform South Cotabato into an industrial, residential and commercial province. Right now, interested investors are planning of owning properties here in anticipation of more vibrant economic activities in the province once Tampakan commences operations in 2016,” Tampakan Mayor Leonardo Escobillo said.
He said the project had triggered an appreciation in the price of land from P150,000 per hectare to P1 million. “A number of investors have actually started landbanking in the province in preparation for 2016,” he said.
Escobillo said the SM group of retail tycoon Henry Sy had expressed to locate in the province. “Just recently, a representative from SM Cebu inquired for a possible location in General Santos but it did not say if its project would be an expansion of SM malls or if it would be a residential project,” he said.
He said former vice presidential candidate Bayani Fernando had bought a piece of land in Koronadal, the capital.
He said the mining project boosted Tampakan revenues and transformed it from a fourth-class to a second-class municipality in 2010. :)
Sagittarius Mines earlier said it hopes to obtain an environmental compliance certificate this year. It is preparing a study on the environmental impact of the mining project and start public consultations in the third quarter of this year.
Sagittarius Mines data showed that it had contributed P2.4 billion to the Philippine economy in 2010 in terms of employment, annual wages, government taxes, purchase of goods and services, and community partnerships, sponsorship and donations.
The project is expected to significantly contribute to the economic development of the country. Once operational, revenue stream is estimated at $37 billion, or P1.85 trillion, over the life of the mine.
Fahdingding April 20th, 2011, 04:26 AM Poverty worsened in Region 12 in PGMA's twilight years
GENERAL SANTOS CITY — Poverty situation in Region 12 or Southwestern Mindanao has worsened during the later stages of the administration of former President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo, the regional office of the National Statistical Coordination Board (NSCB) said.
Herlita Caraan, NSCB Region 12 coordinator, said in a report that the rising prices of basic consumer commodities from 2006 to 2009 had worsened poverty incidence in the region.
Region 12 covers the provinces of South Cotabato, Sultan Kudarat, Sarangani, North Cotabato and the cities of General Santos, Koronadal, Tacurong, Kidapawan and Cotabato.
"While there were increases in income, it was eroded by high inflation rates, thus a worsening poverty condition," she said.
Poverty incidence in the region, or the proportion of families with per capita income falling below the poverty line, was estimated at 28.1 percent in 2009, which was 1.0 percentage point higher than the 27.1 percent poverty incidence in 2006, data showed.
It added that the per capita poverty threshold in the region, or the amount needed by a person to satisfy his food and other basic needs annually, was estimated at P15,762 in 2009 or about P1,314 monthly.
This would mean that in 2009, a family of five in the region needed a monthly income of P6,570 or P78,840 annually to provide for the family's basic food and non-food needs to stay out of poverty, Caraan said.
Dictated by price movements, the 2009 poverty threshold was 25.8 percent higher than the P12,530 poverty threshold estimated in 2006, the NCSB regional report said.
The inflation rate in the region from 2006 to 2009 was estimated at 20.1 percent and inflation on food items further stood at 25.8 percent, it noted.
Sarangani province posted the highest poverty incidence in 2009 at 40.7 percent, followed by Sultan Kudarat with 35.2 percent, North Cotabato with 25.6 percent and South Cotabato with 23.6 percent. (PNA)

GENERAL SANTOS CITY (MindaNews/19 April) – At least two agro-industrial and residential communities here will soon enjoy free and stable electricity through a P46-million farm-based alternative power generation facilities being developed by a Bangkok-based renewable energy firm.
Don Mario Dia, country manager and chief executive officer of Asia Biogas Co. Ltd.-Philippine Bio-Sciences Company, Inc. (PhilBIO), said they are targeting to fully operationalize within the year its two waste-to-energy biogas plants that are located within the swine farm compounds of Bibiana Farms and Mills Inc. here.
The farm facilities, dubbed Bibiana I and II, are located in Barangays Katangawan and Apopong, respectively, which host various agro-industrial ventures and residential subdivisions.
Dia said the biogas power generation projects, which are being developed through the build-operate-transfer (BOT) scheme, are mainly aimed at providing low-cost electricity to Bibiana’s farm and milling facilities and at the same time offer an alternative source of power to neighboring local communities.
The biogas projects were so far the first of their kind to be developed in this city and considered among PhilBIO’s best showcases in Mindanao, he said.
No less than President Benigno Simeon Aquino III was impressed with the projects’ development during an inspection of the main facility at Bibiana I farm in Barangay Katangawan here last week.
“We’re not only providing a stable and cost-efficient alternative power source to the farm and local communities but were promoting the use of renewable energy systems, which we really need to give more focus this time given the present state of our environment,” Dia told MindaNews.
The Bibiana I and II waste-to-energy projects started in August 2008 after Bibiana Farms and Mills Inc., signed an agreement with PhilBIO’s subsidiary Hacienda Bio-Energy Corporation (HBC) for the development of renewable energy facilities though a BOT arrangement, a project briefer said. It said HBC commissioned PhilBIO to “design, construct and operate” the biogas projects throughout the BOT period.
PhilBIO noted that the projects, which were approved by the Department of Environment and Natural Resources in December 2009, involved the installation of three units of 125-kilowatt Caterpillar engines that generate a total of 2,874 megawatts of power annually.
Two Caterpillar engines were installed at Bibiana I facility in Barangay Katangawan while single engine was put up at Bibiana II farm compound in Barangay Apopong. PhilBIO already invested some P27 million for the development of the Bibiana I facility and another P19 million for Bibiana II.
Cyril Ang, Bibiana Farms and Mills Inc. president, said they came up with the idea of putting up a biogas project at the 45-year-old main farm facility in Barangay Katangawan to help solve their worsening waste disposal problem. He said the operations of the swine production farms in Katangawan and in Apopong had been hampered by their difficulty to properly comply with pollution regulations due to the huge volume of wastes that the farms accumulate. Both farms, which require stable power supplies, were also affected by the spate of brownouts in the area as a result of the worsening power supply deficit in Mindanao.
“We agreed to link up with PhilBIO to resolve our waste problem, the need for low-cost electricity in our farms and come up with reliable alternative power sources during brownouts,” Ang said. Dia said that since the biogas facilities were initially completed in January last year, Bibiana’s farm facilities did not suffer any brownout. “The project’s development has been continuing and we’re introducing some innovations that we deem necessary to further improve their operations,” he said.
He said they have pitched the twin biogas power generation facilities to the local power grid to help provide electricity to their neighboring communities.
Dia said they already registered the facilities with the Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC) as provider of “free electricity.”
He said they are currently working for the registration by the DENR of the two biogas facilities as Clean Development Mechanism or CDM projects. CDM is a scheme provided for under the Kyoto Protocol that allows emission reduction projects in developing countries to earn carbon credits. Dia added that the biogas facilities stand to cut carbon dioxide emission equivalent (CO2-e) by an estimated 28,960 tons annually. (Allen V. Estabillo/MindaNews)

3. Polomolok, South Cotabato – 14.29%
4. Davao City – 14.94%
5. Tagum City – 15.42%
6. Cagayan de Oro City – 15.5%
7. Koronadal City – 16.18%
8. Digos City – 18.22%
9. Padada, Davao del Sur – 21.99%
10. Hagonoy, Davao del Sur – 22.60%
South Cotabateños, CONGRATULATIONS!
Polomolok, our Town is the Richest Municipality in Mindanao! :)

earlat April 22nd, 2011, 06:51 AM Tampakan triggers land speculation by Julito G.

If this statement is correct, the land area for the expansion of KCC is relatively big... With a 2 - storey building, I guess it can add up to KCC a 40,000 - 50,000 (approximate) square meters of floor area... I estimated the vacant area to be 25,000 square meters or 2.5 hectares...
If the rumored Hotel will also materialize, I think it would be better to connect the Hotel to the mall with a bridge to make it convenient for those would-be shoppers... :)
Sino may alam sa inyo ng current GFA ng KCC Mall ngayon?
Based sa estimate ko through the google earth software, parang around 70,000 square meters GFA ang KCC now more or less.... Can anyone confirm?

Puregold eyes Iloilo expansion
One of the country’s biggest networks of hypermarket and supermarket chains, Puregold is set to land in Iloilo sometime soon. In its long term plans, Puregold is preparing to venture into an aggressive expansion for the next few years. Established in 1998, Puregold has already 60 stores in different cities in Luzon as of this writing.
As part of the expansion program, Puregold is expected to open 15 more branches within the first half of 2011 and a total of 35 new stores within the year.
After its successful penetration in the saturated Luzon market, Puregold is set to conquer the so called “underserved” Visayas and Mindanao markets. Plans are underway of establishing the retail brand in Iloilo, Negros Occidental, Leyte, and Cebu in the Visayas as well as in Cagayan de Oro, Davao City and General Santos City in Mindanao.
Puregold is very much welcome in Iloilo to give the Ilonggos more choices for their shopping needs. It will definitely give a tough competition among the local supermarket chains here as well as with the national players like SM, Robinsons and Gaisano.
Iloilo expansion and the rest of the Vis-Min plans are expected to commence by 2012.

earlat April 25th, 2011, 05:38 AM Canned tuna exports down but still South’s top earner
:ohno::ohno::ohno::ohno:
GENERAL SANTOS CITY -- Canned tuna remained the top export earner for Central Mindanao last year even as receipt figures plunged 7% to $189 million from $204 million in 2009, a regional export performance report showed.
The volume of canned tuna products shipped abroad reached only 76 million kg in 2010, also down from the 83 million kg the previous year, according to the recently released report from the regional Department of Trade and Industry office.
Stakeholders in the local tuna industry earlier predicted a lackluster performance after the Western and Central Pacific Fisheries Commission banned purse seine fishing method in tuna-rich pockets of the Pacific Ocean.
Malcolm I. Sarmiento, Jr., Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources chief, said in a position paper to a conference organized by the commission in December that the economic losses of the purse seine ban to the tuna industry has reached $115 million.
"This has significantly affected the local economy, prompting the National Government to provide emergency assistance to the affected families," Mr. Sarmiento said. He noted that 9,000 workers have lost their jobs in the local fishing industry as a result of the purse seine ban in the Pacific Ocean’s High Seas Pockets 1 and 2.
Ma. Gloria A. Tango, regional director of the Department of Labor and Employment, said her agency has extended at least P3.6 million in assistance to nearly a thousand displaced workers.
The banned fishing method employs boats with massive nets that ensnare schools of fish, including juveniles.
Bayani B. Fredeluces, executive director of the Soccsksargen Federation of Fishing and Allied Industries, Inc., said local tuna industry players were opposed to plans to extend the purse seine ban beyond 2011, to allow tuna companies to recover.
The EU and the US were among the largest importers of canned tuna from this city, which hosts six of the country’s seven tuna canneries. -- R. S. Sarmiento

Fahdingding April 26th, 2011, 02:46 AM Swine growers in GenSan, South Cot eye 3.5-MW biogas plant
GENERAL SANTOS CITY (MindaNews/25 April) – A group of swine producers and growers here and nearby South Cotabato province is planning to establish an offsite farm biogas plant that could later generate at least 3.5 megawatts (MW) of power for local agro-industrial facilities and communities.
Emilio Escobillo Jr., chair of the South Cotabato Swine Producers Association (Socospa), said they have started formal consultations with renewable energy experts to facilitate the development of the farm biogas plant in the city within the next two to three years.
“We’re looking at developing a common (biogas) facility that would serve several medium to large-scale swine farms,” he told MindaNews.
Socospa is composed of 24 medium- to large-scale swine producers and growers that are based in this city and within the 10 municipalities and lone city of South Cotabato.
Escobillo said the planned biogas plant would be established as a common facility and will process wastes from a number of local swine farms.
Based on initial results of their ongoing consultations, he said the biogas plant would include septage treatment facilities and other related structures and technologies that would facilitate the bulk conversion of accumulated farm wastes into energy.
He said they have yet to finalize the type of technology that would be utilized for the proposed biogas facility but noted that it would be based on successful foreign-developed modern biogas systems.
Escobillo said they would later introduce some innovations to the foreign-developed biogas technologies to make sure that they would complement the local environment and available resources.
He said they are initially considering several areas in Barangays Mabuhay and Conel in this city as possible sites for the projected “multimillion” biogas plant.
“Once completed, the project will mainly serve the power or electricity needs of local farms and later by nearby local communities,” he said.
At least four swine farms under the Socospa have already adopted the biogas technology, one of which was showcased during President Benigno Simeon Aquino III’s visit to this city earlier this month.
The President inspected one of the P46-million biogas plants developed by the Philippine Bio-Sciences Inc. at the two swine production facilities of Bibiana Farms and Mills Inc. in Barangays Katangawan and Apopong, which were considered as the first farm-based alternative power generation facilities to be established in the area.
Escobillo said the two other biogas facilities are being developed at the production facility of Biotech Farms in Banga town and at the Matin-ao Livestock Farm in Tupi town in South Cotabato. (Allen V. Estabillo/MindaNews)

Fahdingding April 26th, 2011, 03:10 AM RINGSIDE STORY: Jose Ocampo Wins WBO Oriental Title in Thailand
PETCHABUN, Thailand -- In spectacular fashion, Filipino superfeather Jose Ocampo of General Santos City came from behind to impressively destroy the WBO #2 lightweight in the world Thai Tor Silachai to claim the WBO Oriental Title Monday in Petchabun, Thailand.
As soon as the bell rang in the first round, it was an intense battle in which both fighters traded power shots after power shots. However, it was the Thai warrior who was by far the superior fighter pinning the Filipino against the ropes and punishing him with solid sustained attacks.
Ocampo seemed on the way to a sure defeat while absorbing a continuous rain of Thai knuckle, but never backing away nor refusing close quarters combat.
Then, it was a solid, precise left straight to the mid-section of Tor Silachai by the end of round 4 that hurt the Thailander sending him to the minute break in obvious discomfort.
That paved the way for what was about to occur in the ring of Phetchabun, Thailand as fith round was ruled by Ocampo who was now scoring clear left uppercuts and vicious combinations as the impossible victory was now appeared reachable.
An impressive powerful combination sent the WBO Oriental champion Tor Silachai to the canvas for the first time and even though he beat the count and was allowed to continue it was all matter of time before the Thai would succumbed to the pressure.
Tor Silachai went down hard for the second and final time in that agonizing sixth round, laying down in his own corner prompting the Thai referee to declare a technical KO at the 2:06.
"I knew I could do it! Thanks be to God. And thanks to my trainer (Emil Romano)", said an emotional new WBO Oriental lightweight champion after the battle.
"Yes, it was a tough fight. Jose is not even a lightweight. He is superfeather. We took this fight because it was a fight against the #2 in the world. And I knew that he was in good shape and he had a big chance to win," said the proud trainer.
And Romano added "he was always eating, even before the weigh-in. That's how we made it to the lightweight. But his next fight will be as a super feather. 130 lbs is where he is stronger and faster. Today is a great day. We are so happy, can't wait to get back home."
In the preliminary fight Sarangani fighter Pol Apolinario lost by KO in round 2 to WBO Asia Pacific Youth bantamweight champion Pungluang Sor Singyu of Thailand. Official time of stoppage was 1:58.

rodincouch May 2nd, 2011, 06:49 AM Ducati opens store in Davao, targets Mindanao market (http://www.sunstar.com.ph/davao/business/2011/05/01/ducati-opens-store-davao-targets-mindanao-market-152987)
PREMIUM brands of motorcycles have now invaded Davao City with the grand opening of Ducati and KTM showrooms at the corner of Camus and General Luna streets on Saturday.
The high-end motorcycles, which started its dealership in the country in 2001, now targets in the Mindanao market.
"We want to tap the potential of Mindanao. We will eventually expand to Cagayan de Oro and General Santos cities," Jondi Lacson, Ducati-KTM Davao CEO, said in a press briefing Saturday.
Lacson said Ducati has at least 1,000 riders all over the country and the number is growing with the launch of new models like the Ducati Monster.
Ducati has at least six families of premier motorcycles with one or two variants in each. All models that are available globally will also be available in the Davao showroom.
Lacson adds that the showroom is the first outside Metro Manila.
"The market potential of Cebu is stagnated and saturated in terms of motorcycles. Davao City has so much room for expansion," Lacson said in response to queries why they chose the city over the metropolitan capital of Visayas.
Lacson adds that their after-sales services will be very efficient to provide spare parts immediately.
"This is the advantage of having dealer networks. You will get premium services any day," he said.
Ducati motorcycle has indeed zoomed its way to the hearts of Dabawenyos and closer to the biking aficionados.
VIP guests and media friends graced the opening last Saturday, including Vice Mayor Rodrigo Duterte, who admits owning one model.
Duterte and Luwalhati Antonino, Mindanao Development Authority secretary lead the ribbon-cutting ceremony.
Also present during the event was Anna Lisa Pecchiari, PR manager of Ducati Asia Pacific Regional Office (Apac); Toti Alberto, Ducati Philippines, CEO; House Rep. Karlo Nograles and General Santos City mayor Darlene Antonino.
Now owning a Ducati or KTM motorcycle is easier and hassle free with the one-stop shop showroom which also includes after-sales servicing.
The store is also offering Ducati and KTM merchandise like jackets, helmets, and shirts.
For more details about these premiere motorcycles, you may also visit their websites at ktm.com and ducati.com.ph.

Here is some excerpt:
"In particular, Ang explained, the company would already start studying the logistics and infrastructure requirements for these coal facilities.Ang said the company planned to initially put up a 300-MW mine-mouth coal power plant in General Santos City following the acquisition of a coal mine in the province. A 300-MW coal facility would need about 750,000 tons of coal a year.
Although he did not reveal San Miguel’s planned investment in the facility, Ang said the conglomerate would invest as much as $1 million to produce one megawatt of power from coal resources. This meant that for the initial 300-MW project, San Miguel would need to invest some $300 million or roughly P13.5 billion.
San Miguel acquired last year three coal mines in South Cotabato and Sultan Kudarat with resources capable of generating an initial 1,200 MW. These were previously owned by Daguma Agro Minerals Inc., Bonanza Energy Resources Inc. and Sultan Energy Mining and Development Corp."

Security Bank to focus on loans
By Ted P. Torres (The Philippine Star) Updated April 18, 2011 12:00
http://www.philstar.com/Article.aspx?articleId=677422&publicationSubCategoryId=66
MANILA, Philippines - Medium-sized commercial bank Security Banking Corp. will be turning more to the lending market to make up for the relative weakening of the equities market.
Security Bank president and chief executive officer Alberto S. Villarosa said the bank’s drivers for growth in 2011 will be the consumer and middle market lending market, and the growth of the capital and investment markets.
“There are a couple of equity offerings where we would participate as domestic runners,” Villarosa said, adding that there are likewise opportunities for huge revenue streams from its treasury operations.
“It will continue to be a strong both in the top line and the bottom line,” he said.
To offset the possible reduction in earnings, Security Bank has undertaken an aggressive program of expansion.
The bank will open at least 10 branches in 2011, aside from five branches in various stages of completion located in Ormoc, Dumaguete, Butuan, Koronadal, and Catarman.
That would allow Security Bank to expand its consumer and middle market deposit and lending base.
Villarosa said that they continue to look for opportunity to expand via the inorganic or acquisition mode. Aside from outright acquisitions, Security Bank is likewise open to acquiring deposit and loan portfolios.
“We’re coming from a high 2010, I don’t think the analysts are expecting us to replicate,” he added.
Last year, the bank recorded a record P7.2 billion in net income from the impressive P3-billion in 2009. However, the record earnings in 2010 was fueled by one-time gains (P3.2 billion) which may not be duplicated in 2011.
Despite the unique position in 2010, Villarosa remains optimistic that Security Bank will perform impressively this year.
In the past years, annual income earnings grew by double-digits on the average, and a consistent leader in terms of earnings to its stakeholders.

Fahdingding May 3rd, 2011, 04:35 AM SMC yet to acquire ECC for GenSan coal-fired power plant
GENERAL SANTOS CITY (MindaNews/02 May) — San Miguel Corp. has yet to conduct a public hearing for its planned coal-fired power plant in this city, which is one of the requirements to acquire the environmental compliance certificate (ECC) needed to start the project, the regional Environmental Management Bureau said on Monday.
Wilson Trajico, EMB- Region 12 division chief for environmental impact and monitoring, said that San Miguel “is not yet seeking an ECC” for its planned $300-million coal-fired power plant in this city.
“The regional office would know if there’s an ECC application. So far, we have not been instructed by our main office to help in the conduct of a scoping or public study, which would imply the company has applied,” he told MindaNews.
Trajico said applications for an ECC are coursed through the national office but the ones normally conducting the public hearing are local personnel.
The official made the clarification after a report said that San Miguel is planning to start the construction of its coal-fired power plant here within the year.
San Miguel president Ramon Ang last year announced the company’s plan to venture into a 300-megawatt coal-fired power plant in Southwestern Mindanao.
Efforts to locate local officials of San Miguel for comments proved futile.
Already, the diversified giant company has acquired the tenements of three coal mining companies namely Daguma Agro Minerals Inc., Bonanza Energy Resources Inc. and Sultan Energy Philippines Corp.
Studies show Daguma Mountain Range has a coal reserve of 426 million metric tons. Initial exploration and drilling have blocked 55 million metric tons of minable reserves in 526 hectares of the mountain range in Barangay Ned in Lake Sebu, South Cotabato.
Trajico said that the three coal mining firms have already been given ECCs.
Fr. Romeo Catedral, social action director of the Diocese of Marbel, has criticized the bid to extract coal reserves in Lake Sebu town and plans of San Miguel to construct a coal-fired power plant here.
“Ned is a watershed area, mining the coal there would pose not only environmental risks but will also threaten food security,” the priest said.
On the planned coal-fired power plant of San Miguel, Catedral has called on the city council to block the venture for the apparent danger it poses to the marine-rich Sarangani Bay.
Ned is a government-designated relocation site. Its near-to-surface location is best exploited through open-pit mining.
South Cotabato Rep. Daisy Avance Fuentes (second district), earlier said that coal mining in Ned would be affected by the provincial environment code that bans open-pit mining method.
Fuentes signed the controversial environment code before her three-term governorship ended last June, a move that also poses a stumbling block to the $5.9-billion Tampakan copper-gold project of Sagittarius Mines, Inc.
The Tampakan project could be the largest single foreign direct investment in the country should it proceed in 2016. (Bong Sarmiento/MindaNews)

Fahdingding May 3rd, 2011, 04:42 AM Manny Pacquiao's biggest fight might be Pac-Mart versus Wal-Mart
This may lose a little or a lot if it has to be translated into Tagalog or any other Filipino dialect. But, in the Brooklyn neighborhood where 79 year old promoter Bob Arum grew up, Manny Pacquiao’s recent run of huge media coverage and newly-minted endorsement deals would be described as not being chopped liver.
Chopped liver, chopped balut, call it what you want but Pacman’s promoter was over the moon Monday afternoon after a glowing, front page (of the sports section) New York Times piece by talented, young scribe Greg Bishop (who made Pacman comparisons to the iconic Bruce Lee) and endorsement tie-ins with Hewlett-Packard for the company’s recently released tablet computer and for State Street Produce, a San Antonio-based company that grows fruits and vegetables in Mexico and sells to restaurants across the U.S.
“Manny, in my opinion, is now the most recognizable and one of the most well liked athletes in the world right now,” Arum said.
Name a product and it seems that Pacman is now hyping it, be it sneakers, his MP 8 cologne, his “Sometimes When We Touch” music CD with Dan Hill…clearly, Pacman is on a marketing roll.
Arum told me he “predicts” Pacquiao getting $10 million per year with the State Street deal.
And, on both the fruit and veggie endorsement and the H-P deal, many of Congressman Pacquiao’s poverty-stricken constituents in Sarangani Province, will be beneficiaries.
“These are deals which will provide for free computers and for food for the people in Sarangani,” Arum said.

AYALA MALL is planning to put up a mall here in GENSAN according to someone close to us(a real estate agent)...
Anyway, RUMOR pa lang naman eh...
Isa yan sa mga next investors sa GenSan... not a surprise that Ayala Mall's considering GenSan.... GenSan is really the country's "Next Big Thing"...
