ALUMNI, friends and benefactors of Central Philippine University all over the country

, the U.S.A., Canada, Australia and other countries where there are Centralians are expected to visit their Alma mater during the 106th Alumni Homecoming on September 3 at Rose Memorial Auditorium. Considering that there are about 31 Alumni Chapters in the Philippines and many more Chapters in the U.S. (where Alumni are occupying top positions in business and government offices), no doubt the 106th homecoming will be a roaring success.

Why are CPU graduates closely attached to their Alma Mater, their teachers and classmates? According to one teacher, it is the “Central Spirit” and the Christian values that students will not forget in their life time. Even parents and guardians love to send their children to CPU since the school has adopted a policy since its inception in October 1905 of the “no smoking” habit. And the most important practice is its Christian discipline where problem children are molded to the love and fear of God. Many Catholic parents appreciate their kids taking Bible or Christian subjects where students learn the concept of clean living and Christian principles of obeying parents, respect for elders and love for fellowmen. Harmful vices which lead many children to becoming delinquent members of society are not found in CPU campus when they come to study.

In 106 years, Central Philippine University has grown from an elementary vocational school with 17 pupils to a widely known university. CPU is truly autonomous, the highest academic status in the country that was granted in 2nd Semester 2001-2002 and has been extended by the Commission on Higher education (CHED) last March 2009 (Commission in bank Resolution No. 076-2009). CPU is the only one in Iloilo and one of only two schools in Western Visayas accorded with such a prestigious honor. CPU is now looked up to as the best in Western Visayas and one of the top 20 schools in the whole country. The university High school has the distinction as the only high school in Western Visayas and one of the three in the country to have attained the Level III accreditation given by the Association of Christian Schools, Colleges and Universities Accrediting Agency (ACSCUU-AA). CPU is ISO 2001-2008 Certified, effective July 2010-July 2013). The University has met the standard set by ISO (International Organization for Standardization) for a quality management system.

Kudos to Dr. William O. Valentine, pastor, teacher, and principal who started the university as the Jaro Industrial School . Congratulations also to Filipino pioneers who helped Dr. Valentine put up a Christian School in Iloilo .

CPU President Teodoro C. Robles was a work student in the College of Engineering and finished his Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering degree in 1964. In June 1969, he earned his M.S. in Electrical Engineering from Montana State University in Bozeman , Montana and in August 1975, his Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering from the Montana State University . He lived in the U.S. for nearly 37 years and had taught in Tennessee Technological University, Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology, Purdue University School of Engineering and Technology and the Milwaukee School of Engineering. He served as Director of the Institute of Applied Industrial Research and Associate Director of the Applied Technology Center in 1993-1995. He has authored various publications for the engineering faculty of CPU. Dr. Robles is happily married to the former Angeles Antonio from San Dionisio, Iloilo who is also a CPU BSN graduate, Class 1969. Their only son Theodore holds a Ph.D. degree in Psychology from Ohio State University and is now Assistant Professor at the University of Los Angeles and is married to Jennifer Preston, also a psychologist. CPU is indeed lucky to have Dr. Robles as its 4th Filipino President.

To B'lakayo is about an hour or less. It depends on the weather and the type of vehicle you will be using. In our case last Saturday, we need to stop over somewhere in Olympog since our van cannot go up the steep and rocky road all the way to B'lakayo.

By the way, aside from the two ziplines, the owner will also be opening a 3rd zipline, which may deem be the fastest in the Philippines. B'lakayo has already one of the fastest and highest.

If you would like to just take it slow, you have an option to take the cable car...with a twist. The cable car is open, instead of your usual gondola and it takes you across slowly above an almost 1,000 foot ravine. :D

GenSan weaning from ‘tuna capital’ tag

GENERAL SANTOS CITY, Aug. 15 (PNA) - For Mayor Darlene R. Antonino-Custodio, it appeared that the “Tuna Capital of the Philippines” tag is no longer the preferred introduction for the city.

In several official functions she attended these past several days, among them regional celebration of the National Science and Technology Week, Custodio did not mention the moniker that famously brought the city in the national and international tourism and trade circuit.

“A city by the bay,” the mayor said in her speeches.

An aide of the mayor, Edgar Cadiente, said it was a tack “to wean the city from the famous” tag that basically triggered economic activities in the city two decades ago.

“There’s more to tuna in GenSan, and we’re going beyond that,” Cadiente said on the phone, noting the “Tuna Capital of the Industry” tag has already made its mark.

The executive assistant stressed the branding that the local government would like to emphasize and be successful is the slogan “Magandang GenSan: Beyond the City by the Bay,” which also promotes the ecotourism and other trade potentials of the city.

For many years already, the city is celebrating the week-long tuna festival every September as a tribute to the industry that fueled the growth of the locality as the economic hub of Central Mindanao region.

Six of the country’s seven tuna canneries have been operating in this city, providing employment to tens of thousands of workers.

As the tuna festival is approaching, the local tuna industry is facing difficulties, with John Heitz, an American tuna trader, blaming overfishing on declining tuna stocks, particularly fresh large tuna used in sashimi dishes.

Data from the local office of the Philippine Fisheries Development Authority showed that volume of fresh and frozen tuna stocks dropped last year by about 1.5 percent to 98,276,518 kilograms (kg) from 99,733,827 kg in 2009.

In 2010, foreign fishing vessels brought in 70,529,547 kg from 72,557,820 the previous year, while tuna caught by local fishing companies account for about 15 percent of the total annual unloading, the PFDA data showed.(PNA)

To B'lakayo is about an hour or less. It depends on the weather and the type of vehicle you will be using. In our case last Saturday, we need to stop over somewhere in Olympog since our van cannot go up the steep and rocky road all the way to B'lakayo.

By the way, aside from the two ziplines, the owner will also be opening a 3rd zipline, which may deem be the fastest in the Philippines. B'lakayo has already one of the fastest and highest.

If you would like to just take it slow, you have an option to take the cable car...with a twist. The cable car is open, instead of your usual gondola and it takes you across slowly above an almost 1,000 foot ravine. :D

GENERAL SANTOS CITY, Philippines – The Department of Agriculture has agreed to lower the tuna export fee from the current three percent of the gross value of the shipment amount to just 0.2 percent, a industry official said Tuesday. “This is a big help to the industry as now we will have to pay only about P1,600 per export,” Marfin Tan, president of the Socsksargen Fishing Federation and Allied Industries, Inc. (SFFAII), told reporters. Tan said the DA’s decision came after submission by representatives of the industry of a resolution adopted at the recent Tuna Congress here urging the government to reduce the export fee. During the congress, Agriculture Secretary Proceso Alcala hinted he supported the resolution, which called for the amendment of the Fisheries Administrative Order (FAO) 233 issued last year. Alcala said any reduction in the export fee would help the tuna industry recover from the current downturn is declining but not dying. This is primarily due to man-made factors and natural phenomenon,” Tan said Tan identified the skyrocketing prices of fuel, illegal fishing and over-fishing, closure of the Indonesian and the three-year ban on catching yellow-fin tuna in the Western and Central Pacific areas as among the factors that have contributed to the decline of the local tuna industry.

GENERAL SANTOS CITY -- SM City General Santos, Mindanao's biggest mall is set to open in the first quarter of next year in this city, touted as the country's "tuna capital", targeting a huge retail market in one of the country’s fastest growing regions, the Soccsksargen area.

SM Prime Holdings, Inc. president Hans T. Sy, on Sunday said SM Gensan has a total floor area of 150,000 square meters, including the parking area, situated in a 17-hectare property they are leasing from one of the city’s pioneering families -- the Salazars.

"This our biggest in Mindanao," Sy told Sun.Star Davao.

Sy was in this city to grace the opening of newly widened 440 meter San Miguel street in Lagao, where one of the entrances of the mall is located. SM Prime Holdings spent P4 million for the project.

Also at the event are city officials, led by City Mayor Darlene Antonino, Representative Pedro Acharon and the Salazar matriarch Sufradia Las Marias Salazar.

The property where SM Gensan stands is covered by a 20-year lease contract entered by SM Prime Holdings and the Salazars.

"Everytime we invest in a place, we always see that we have the return of investment in 9-10 years, so the 10-year contract would be okay," Sy said.

Sy said total investment they have poured in for the construction of the Gensan mall, which is now 90 percent complete, is pegged at P2.5 billion, much higher than their investment for the construction of SM Lanang in Davao City, placed at P2 billion. SM Lanang is targeted to be completed in the last quarter of next year.

MANILA, Philippines - SM Prime Holdings Inc., the country’s largest retail landlord, is aggressively scaling up its operations to bring total gross floor area to 6.2 million square meters by end-2012.

Jeffrey C. Lim, executive vice-president and chief finance officer of SM Prime, said the company is opening five malls next year - in Gen Santos City, Sucat BF, Novaliches and Consolacion, Cebu.

Also slated for opening in 2012 is SM Chongqing in southwestern China. Estimated to cost around 900 million yuan, the project will cover a land area of over 66,700 square meters in the Liangjiang new district of Chongqing.

The expected end-2012 GLA is 19.2 percent higher than this year’s estimated GLA of 5.2 million square meters.

Later this year, SM Prime is set to open an expanded SM City San Fernando in Pampanga, SM City Olongapo in Zambales and SM City Suzhou in China to bring its total nationwide network to 43 and four in China by year end.

SM Gen. Santos City will be the group’s third largest among SM malls in Mindanao after SM City Davao renovated and SM Lanang also in Davao opened. It will rise on an eight-hectare leased prime property along Santiago Blvd and San Miguel within the central business district of Gen. Santos.

Lim said the company will also open SM Tianjin, its biggest mall to date with a floor area of 530,000 sqm., in the second quarter of 2014. The mall will feature three oval-shaped arch buildings, showcasing the latest and the best in mall design and build quality.

Also to open in 2014 is the P4.5-billion SM Seaside City Cebu, its fourth biggest shopping mall in the country. The new mall, with a gross floor area of 241,600 sqm, forms part of the P20-billion, 30-hectare integrated development project at South Road Properties (SRP) dubbed SM Seaside Complex. It is envisioned to become the biggest shopping mall in Cebu when completed in the second quarter of 2014.



SM Seaside City Cebu will be the group’s fourth biggest mall next to SM City North Edsa, Mall of Asia along Roxas Blvd. and SM Megamall in Mandaluyong.

The group’s retail sales in China have grown more than 11.5 percent in the past five years.

SM Prime intends to open at least one new mall per year in China.

By the end of 2014, SM Prime expects to have a total of 1.5 million sqm of mall GFA in China.

The three malls in China contributed P980 million or eight percent of total consolidated revenues. In terms of net income, they chipped in P210 million, accounting for five percent of total consolidated net earnings.

The SM China malls are enjoying healthy increases in rental rates, and much higher occupancy levels, particularly in SM Xiamen’s Lifestyle Center and SM Chengdu. Rental revenues jumped 57 percent to P950 million.

The average occupancy rate for the three malls in China is now at 91 percent.

SM Prime reported a 14 percent growth in net income in the first half this year to P4.27 billion on the back of new store openings and strong performance of its malls in China. Revenues rose 12 percent to P12.71 billion.

GENERAL SANTOS CITY -- SM City General Santos, Mindanao's biggest mall is set to open in the first quarter of next year in this city, touted as the country's "tuna capital", targeting a huge retail market in one of the country’s fastest growing regions, the Soccsksargen area.

SM Prime Holdings, Inc. president Hans T. Sy, on Sunday said SM Gensan has a total floor area of 150,000 square meters, including the parking area, situated in a 17-hectare property they are leasing from one of the city’s pioneering families -- the Salazars.

"This our biggest in Mindanao," Sy told Sun.Star Davao.

Sy was in this city to grace the opening of newly widened 440 meter San Miguel street in Lagao, where one of the entrances of the mall is located. SM Prime Holdings spent P4 million for the project.

Also at the event are city officials, led by City Mayor Darlene Antonino, Representative Pedro Acharon and the Salazar matriarch Sufradia Las Marias Salazar.

The property where SM Gensan stands is covered by a 20-year lease contract entered by SM Prime Holdings and the Salazars.

"Everytime we invest in a place, we always see that we have the return of investment in 9-10 years, so the 10-year contract would be okay," Sy said.

Sy said total investment they have poured in for the construction of the Gensan mall, which is now 90 percent complete, is pegged at P2.5 billion, much higher than their investment for the construction of SM Lanang in Davao City, placed at P2 billion. SM Lanang is targeted to be completed in the last quarter of next year.

"This is our thrust. We want to intensify our presence in Mindanao," Sy said, but was quick to add SM has no plan of getting hold or monopolize the retail market on the island.

"We are here not to eat the pie, but we’re here to make the pie bigger," he said.

Sy said their next target in Mindanao, after the opening of SM Lanang next year, are the cities of Butuan and Zamboanga.

"These are the two areas we are looking at. The property we eye for the construction of these malls is now under negotiation," he said.

Big crowd greets Shamcey Supsup in hometown General Santos City


GENERAL SANTOS CITY – A huge crowd turned out on the streets of this city to greet Miss Universe 3rd runner-up Shamcey Supsup upon her arrival Tuesday morning aboard a private plane.

Shamcey was accompanied by Ella Antonino, younger sister of Mayor Darlene Antonino-Custodio, who led city officials in welcoming the beauty queen.

From the airport, Shamcey was treated to a motorcade that drove around the city’s main thoroughfares for three hours. Shamcey rode a specially-designed float together with her parents and the mayor.

Delighted city residents lined up the motorcade route and were unmindful of the searing heat of the noontime sun. They waited for several hours just to catch a glimpse of their townmate beauty titlist. And when Shamcey’s float passed by, they stomped their feet, waved their hands, chanted her name and took photos of the beauty queen.

“I thought the crowd which met me in Manila was the biggest. Now I realize, it was just a prelude to a much bigger crowd during my homecoming,” she said.

“Thanks for your prayers and support and for loving me. I love you all,” she added.

The motorcade ended at the oval plaza covered court.
The city government had prepared a “tribute variety show” at the General Santos City gymnasium in Barangay Lagao on Tuesday night.

During the show, Supsup is expected to show once again her “tsunami” walk.
Aside from musical presentations, the Miss Universe pageant will be shown.
Timoteo, Supsup’s father, said his daughter had already informed him that her first project here will be the improvement of their house in Barangay (village) Katangawan.

During a press conference earlier, Shamcey said she had agreed to do the design of the city government’s business and investments promotion center. Shamcey is an architect by profession.

City administrator Jose Mariano Gonzales said the budget for the construction of the city’s business and investments promotion building had already been included in the annual investment plan (AIP) of the city government.

“We have already a budget for that and we expect to save money because Shamcey pledged to do the design without cost,” Gonzales said.

Shamcey said she has been thinking of ways to help the city government and one thing that crossed her mind is to make architectural design for the city’s infrastructure project.

One that Gensan has to improve would be services and education. A more diverse economy means a more employment and opportunity to Soccsksargenhons and Generals. As of the moment, Gensan's economy is still tied up with the tuna industry as its leading economic powerhouse.

However, what I like about the attitude of the local leaders in General Santos is that they do acknowledge the fact that tuna ain't forever, hence they are giving out ways in making Gensan a business-friendly city, hence opening to more opportunities.

By the time I visited Gensan frequently during that period, KCC was constructed at that time and a lot of things going on public infra as well.

GENERAL SANTOS CITY -- SM City General Santos, Mindanao's biggest mall is set to open in the first quarter of next year in this city, touted as the country's "tuna capital", targeting a huge retail market in one of the country’s fastest growing regions, the Soccsksargen area.

SM Prime Holdings, Inc. president Hans T. Sy, on Sunday said SM Gensan has a total floor area of 150,000 square meters, including the parking area, situated in a 17-hectare property they are leasing from one of the city’s pioneering families -- the Salazars.

"This our biggest in Mindanao," Sy told Sun.Star Davao.

Sy was in this city to grace the opening of newly widened 440 meter San Miguel street in Lagao, where one of the entrances of the mall is located. SM Prime Holdings spent P4 million for the project.

Also at the event are city officials, led by City Mayor Darlene Antonino, Representative Pedro Acharon and the Salazar matriarch Sufradia Las Marias Salazar.

The property where SM Gensan stands is covered by a 20-year lease contract entered by SM Prime Holdings and the Salazars.

"Everytime we invest in a place, we always see that we have the return of investment in 9-10 years, so the 10-year contract would be okay," Sy said.

Sy said total investment they have poured in for the construction of the Gensan mall, which is now 90 percent complete, is pegged at P2.5 billion, much higher than their investment for the construction of SM Lanang in Davao City, placed at P2 billion. SM Lanang is targeted to be completed in the last quarter of next year.

"This is our thrust. We want to intensify our presence in Mindanao," Sy said, but was quick to add SM has no plan of getting hold or monopolize the retail market on the island.

"We are here not to eat the pie, but we’re here to make the pie bigger," he said.

Sy said their next target in Mindanao, after the opening of SM Lanang next year, are the cities of Butuan and Zamboanga.

"These are the two areas we are looking at. The property we eye for the construction of these malls is now under negotiation," he said.

SM building in GenSan collapses

GENERAL SANTOS CITY (MindaNews/25 September) — Four people were injured when the fourth floor of the car park building of the SM mall complex in General Santos City that was undergoing construction collapsed at dawn Sunday.

Construction activities were immediately halted at the east wing of the mall along San Miguel Street, according to City Engineer’s Office chief Mark Reyes.

Monolith Construction declined to issue any further statement during a press conference it organized late Sunday afternoon, saying the incident is now under investigation.

Project engineer Jeston Mangete likewise refused to comment on reports the integrity of the building may have been compromised by alleged pilferage of round bars from the construction site.

The SM mall complex is said to be the biggest of its kind in Mindanao, according to Hans Sy of SM Prime Holdings who recently visited the city to turn over to the local government the 440-meter two-lane concrete road it constructed to expand its front entrance road access.

Sy said they expect to open the mall in the first quarter of next year.

Reyes said their own investigators have not entered yet the collapsed construction site saying they are still waiting for SM structural and civil engineers who are expected to fly in Monday.

The area is now cordoned off and reporters are barred from entering the construction site.

The city engineer however said construction at the main SM building will still proceed as the cark park building is a separate structure and has a separate building permit.

Monolith Construction, a Quezon City-based construction company, could not give an estimate on the losses the damage and the delay will cause to the project.

The contractor however said the collapsed portion of the building covered at least 390 square meters and it also completely damaged the third and second floor areas. The damaged portion separated the southern and northern portions of the building.

There was no immediate statement from SM Prime Holdings on the matter.

SM is the fifth and the biggest shopping mall to rise in the city at a cost of P2.5 billion.

In 2009, Robinson Place opened its mall along J. Catolico Street. The others are Gaisano General Santos, KCC Gensan and Fitmart.

The Henry Sy-owned SM Mall in General Santos reportedly has a floor area of around 150,000 square meters and will employ roughly 500 directly hired workers.

GENERAL SANTOS City, Philippines—The City Engineer’s Office has ordered the temporary suspension of the construction of the multi-story car park building of SM mall here in the wake of an accident that left four workers injured on Sunday.

John March Reyes, acting city engineer, said he issued the order on Monday.

The structural engineer of the project of retail giant SM was to arrive Tuesday to inspect and investigate, he added.

“The company has hired the services of private construction firms and we are just a regulatory body,” Reyes explained.

He said work on the car park should remain suspended until the structural engineer completes his investigation or submits a new building plan and design.

Reyes said that if the structural engineer certifies the safety of the building, their office would issue them a new building permit.

He said the accident occurred in a separate building designed as a car park on the seven-hectare lot leased by SM for 25 years.

A portion of the building’s third floor collapsed while workers were pouring cement on Sunday, Reyes said. SM management hastily called for a press conference on the same day but officials of the construction firm refused to answer questions.

From the looks of it, basig ang carpark building lang ang madelay og human. I hope the mall building itself will be done accordingly and as-scheduled.

Ang alam ko kasi kapag natapos na ang building may another permit na i-issue which is the OCCUPANCY PERMIT. Ma obtain lang yan ng SM kung approved ang safety ng structure for human habitation. PAK!

One that Gensan has to improve would be services and education. A more diverse economy means a more employment and opportunity to Soccsksargenhons and Generals. As of the moment, Gensan's economy is still tied up with the tuna industry as its leading economic powerhouse.

However, what I like about the attitude of the local leaders in General Santos is that they do acknowledge the fact that tuna ain't forever, hence they are giving out ways in making Gensan a business-friendly city, hence opening to more opportunities.

By the time I visited Gensan frequently during that period, KCC was constructed at that time and a lot of things going on public infra as well.

Not really. Remember ang nahugno is ang gi-patungan sa wet and freshly mixed na concrete. Mag worry ka kung dry na ang slab unya nahugno...sibak jud ang nag structural design ana without further a do. plus left and right nga kaso ang iyang madangatan.

From the looks of it, huyang ang pagka plastar sa mga scaffolding maong nahugno ang forms nga mao untay maghold sa buhos nga simento.
