From salmon tails from GenSan to roasted duckling at G Hotel

Mighty hard to diet when people give you food gifts and invite you to eat where the aroma of well-cooked dishes entice you to have some more.

My son’s trainer brought a new kind of product from GenSan, South Cotabato. The package still cold from being frozen, he described it as salmon tails. Just deep-fry it after thawing, he said, smacking his lips to stress its goodness.
That was what we did and while it was really delicious, there was an argument whether or not those were really tails or fins.

That’s the good news. The bad news is that the recent tuna festival in that city didn’t have enough tuna to make a true celebration.

Some years back, the depletion of tuna catch was a fact but now the situation is dire. The local government should learn something from the diwal revival in Iloilo. Stop catching for a while until the supply increases, then limit the catch after that. That’s why salmon is making up for the lack. And it’s not even from the place.

A pack of flavored butter rolls was the other irresistible gift. Each one was mixed with truffle, walnuts, garlic, herb, chili, lemongrass, cinnamon and ginger, some in combination.

Those were sent from the Modern Epicurean Kitchen of Stephanie Zubiri, young chef and food writer (tel. 3847064 for orders). Had it with my pancakes and the smell of truffle was intoxicating.

I doubled the pleasure by adding Manuka honey to the mix. That’s a uniquely New Zealand product that is bruited to be antibacterial, and health advocates as well as honey producers say it’s the best honey. A friend said he takes a teaspoon a day and couldn’t believe I just wipe it on my cheese or pancake—it’s expensive and difficult to find here.

I was lucky to buy two bottles while in Dubai where you can find most anything you want from other places in the world. When it’s gone, I’ll just have to wait for another chance to buy some.

My other surprise was English Sage Derby cheese eaten with the new selection of cheeses (French, Australian, Italian, English, Greek) available at Wine Depot. The hard cheese from cow’s milk has a marbling of green color from sage leaves added and it has a bit of spicy flavor.

I served it to Japanese guests and I heard nothing but “Oishi!” (Japanese for delicious) the whole evening (Alabang, tel. 7719463; Reposo, Makati, 8973220).

A small hotel along Roxas Boulevard has always made us curious because the outside is all white and it just said G Hotel. It turned out to be part of the Gatchalian hotel chain, which includes Waterfront Hotels and Manila Pavilion. The lobby and café of this boutique hotel had black and white furnishings that don’t really look stark. More like neat.

At two dinners with friends, we were surprised as well with the food served at Café Noir. We had rich tomato cream soup, a well-designed and flavorful smoked salmon salad, roasted duckling topped with lots of sweet shallot slices and well-cooked grilled peppered tenderloin.

But veteran chef Marcelo Tesalona decided to flex his Asian cuisine muscle and served as well Balinese fried fish where the terasi and kecap manis could be discerned and kari ayam, which is chicken in an Indian curry sauce.

As if we hadn’t had enough, there was calzone wrapped for us to bring home, a wonderful change from my usual breakfast fare the next day. (G Hotel by Waterfront, 5250888)

Yeah, its just that I have been to Be Hotel in Mactan and its a boutique hotel but really nice with all those Keneth Cobonpue furnitures in all their amenities.

GENERAL SANTOS CITY, Oct. 2 (PIA) -– The city government has lauded the public-private partnership (PPP) as it progresses to mean more jobs for its constituents here.

It said the SM management here has recently disclosed a number of work vacancies that will comprise its working force when it opens the first quarter next year.

To fill up hundreds of job vacancies, SM in cooperation with the Public Employment Services Office (PESO), will have a job fair on October 3 and 4 at the Lagao Gymnasium here.

PESO Chief Elizhiba Valdez said she expects some hundreds of Generals participating urging them not to miss the opportunity to be employed with the largest retail chain in the country.

She also advised the applicants to be prepared with the basic requirements and be properly dressed as there will be a “spot interview.”

"Please visit our office for the pre-registration and orientation," she said emphasizing that city residents are priorities in the hiring of positions.

Valdez said some 500 job vacancies are available for the three divisions of SM Department Store here.

For store operations group, SM needs branch operations manager; assistant branch manager; regional manager; group manager; counter and checking manager/supervisor; customer service manager/supervisor; Accounting; Marketing manager; inventory assistant; sales assistant; cashier/checker; sales clerk; sales utility clerk/stock clerk; warehouse manager/supervisor; customer relations service manager/supervisor representative; building administration officer; and customer service assistant.

The biggest chain of store in the country also needs workers to fill up the positions for its support and administrative division: treasury manager/supervisor; accounting manager/officer; store consignor manager/supervisor; fixed assets and supplies manager; visual display officer; treasury assistant; project manager; assistant project manager; project engineer; and civil engineer.
Aside from those mentioned, the management will also be hiring a design officer, operations manager, assistant operations manager, and resident engineer to man its engineering department.

Hindi pa naman tayo sure kung meron talaga. Kailangan sigurong may makapunta sa katangawan para malaman kung totoo daw iyon.:)

GENERAL SANTOS -- SM Prime Holdings, Inc. is hiring at least 500 workers for a new mall here slated to open in the first quarter next year, the local Public Employment Services Office (PESO) said.

PESO chief Elizheba A. Valdez said the country’s largest mall operator tapped her office to help in the hiring of workers for the three divisions of its department store.

Jobs to be filled include managers, supervisors, customer service and sales assistants, and clerks, among others, she said in an interview with local media.

Already, hundreds of construction workers have been hired for the SM mall here, which is nearing completion for its targeted opening in the first quarter of 2011.

Construction started mid-2010.

Late last month, four construction workers were reportedly hurt when the third floor of the mall’s car park building collapsed.

The P2.5-billion SM mall complex is said to be the biggest of its kind in Mindanao, said Hans T. Unsang SMC? AFAIK, the socotecoII will still retain their admin building for their payment centers and other costumer services and also that Gaisano Marbel is no way related to Gasiano Mall of GenSan.

may narinig ako na friend ko dati ng work sa SBUX MANILA.. sabi niya hindi daw sa loob ng SM GENSAN mag lalagay ng branch ang SBUX kung di sa labas at katabi lang ng SM... sa likod ng ST. ELIZABETH HOSPITAL na ngayon ay may U/C.. na dating timuan restaurant...

I believe that is going to be the newest BPI building here in GenSan.

IMHO. I wish Gaisano would stay.... they have established their own market...I still prefer to buy some items there especially at dry goods. OK naman ang presyo and the quality. If SM is planning to expand I hope it will be in some other sites. Baranggay Apopong is very promising... I also like the area near Dona Soledad leading to Makar Wharf. Sooner time will ripe to prepare these very potential future growth areas.

Nakakamiss ang gensan... The big siopao at bayfront...garlic chicken at chicken house... and im happy that the later is expanding! See you in some other time....Im happy that more icons has come...this is just the start and there will be more to come!

I could still picture out the enchanting horizon at Saranggani Bay... Its absolutely worth remembering!

New Guadalupe Elementary School receive 10 computers

The public-private partnership (PPP) is taking off even in the education sector with the implementation of private sectors’ Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) projects in various public schools here.

Recently, the Aboitiz Foundation, Inc. (AFI) went beyond its commitment to address the social and economic development needs of less privileged communities and members of society through its CSR projects.

The foundation, in cooperation with the South Cotabato Electric Cooperative (SOCOTECO) II signed a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) with the Department of Education for the turnover of ten brand new computer units to New Guadalupe Elementary School in barangay Conel here.

Department of Education (DepEd) GenSan schools division representative Mario Bermudez, city councilor Margareth Rose Santos, Conel barangay captain Jose Santos and the school principal Yolanda Tagaban served as witnesses to the occasion.

Bermudez said DepEd is thankful to Aboitiz and SOCOTECO for taking their social responsibility seriously.

“We are looking forward to more assistance on computer literacy,” he said.

In her message, city councilor Santos, also chairperson on education expressed her sincerest gratitude to the foundation for giving importance to the significant role of new technology in uplifting the quality of education in public schools.

“Quality education is a tool in the fight against poverty,” she said.

Together with the faculty, Tagaban also committed to take care of the equipment so that it will also benefit other students in the future.

“We also expect the barangay council to help us in the maintenance of the computers by providing air conditioners that we can use in the facility to help prolong the computers’ lifespan utilization,” she said.

Barangay chieftain Santos said he will initiate the sourcing out of funds along with the entire barangay council for the air conditioners in support of the needs of the students.

The computerization project in public schools was just among the many milestones that the AFI has implemented in the ground to attain its goal under CSR branding and promote public-private partnership.
