Beijing 6th Ring Road Bridges

Beijing 6th Ring Road, totally 190km long, is close to be finished. The 38km west part of the ring road is the only site under constructions now.

Impressive, but still too narrow (no need to make them too wide I guess). Can't wait to see monster expressways with 10x10 lanes in China, I just love that stuff :master: Soon or late we'll see world's widest expressways linking the cities within China largest urban clusters.

Andrew
May 5th, 2008, 04:47 PM
Why on earth do you want the world's widest expressways!?!? They're horrible! Do you want Beijing's air to be even more unbreathable than it already is?

big-dog
May 5th, 2008, 04:57 PM
actually it's more efficient to have wide expressways. currently beijing-tianjin will have 2 expressways soon. one 2x2, one 4x4, a 3rd 4x4 expressway is on schedule. obviously a 10x10 expressway is more convenient and cost efficient than 3 such expressways.

I do think 10 lane highway is an overkill though. 5 on each direction should be enough. I think it is not safe if it is too wide.

LOL jealous? There are too many of those in my country already and I don't want to see any more. I'll tell you the places I'm jealous of, it's places like Switzerland that have an excellent railway network and clean air, cities like Stocholm (http://www.urbanrail.net/eu/sto/stockhlm.htm), Amsterdam (http://www.urbanrail.net/eu/ams/amsterdm.htm) or Barcelona (http://www.urbanrail.net/eu/bcn/barcelona.htm) etc. where there are excellent public transport networks and its normal to walk cycle, and take public transport instead of driving everywhere. In Amsterdam they have multi-story bicycle parks http://www.streetsblog.org/2006/10/06/eyes-on-the-street-amsterdam/ Car dominated cities are horrible cities to live in. Of course these European cities also have roads, multi-lane motorways etc, but they have a more sensible approach to transport, an approach that doesn't have an obsession with cars! With regards to transport, there is one thing I am jealous of China about, and that's the amazing high speed railway network you're building. I wish we'd build high speed railways here in the UK. Am I jealous of 10 lane highways? NO

I notice almost all of the photos you've posted above show empty or almost empty roads. Aren't the photos below more like the real situation?

So much traffic in the inner rings because they are too narrow imo. They should double the capacity, make them elevated if needed (like in Shanghai, Tokyo, etc).

^^ Traffic jams = Tons of unnecessary pollution, waste of time for millions, etc, etc. It is as simple as that, dude! Roads must be provided to catch up with the demand of individuals. Of course tons of mass transit network should be built too so that it becomes the best option, but a good city must provide excellent systems for both kinds of transport (mass transit and cars).

:okay: good memory you got there 02tonyl :) its great seeing all these massive highways and overpasses are built it might seem excessive to some but its badly needed especially planning for the future and build while materials and labour is very cheap rather then wait down the track which will surely blowout the budget :ohno:

You don't get it do you... A growth in traffic causes traffic jams, which means they build more roads to cater for demand. This makes it more convenient to go by car, so more people choose to drive. This results in more cars on the roads so you start getting more traffic jams, suddenly you realise that the 6 lane road that was built 5 years ago is no longer big enough to handle the volume of traffic, so you double the capacity to 12 lanes. That improves the flow of traffic for a couple of years, but guess what, that means more people choose to drive and you realise that the road isn't wide enough as yet more traffic jams, worse than before start forming. What do you do now? Add another 2, 4, or 6 lanes? Double the capacity to 24 lanes? No matter how much extra road space you add, it's only a matter of time before it gets filled up again. With road building, you can never satisfy demand, especially in a country that is developing as fast as China.

If you follow the American model of development like this where everyone has cars, not only would it degrade the quality of life in Chinese cities through loss of public space, massive increases in air pollution etc, it would also damage the rest of the planet's environment in the process. I'm not saying that cars have no place in China's future, but to blindly follow the American model of unrestrained car growth is unsustainable, irresponsible and self destructive. In cities as densely populated and as large as Beijing, there should be no need for cars to dominate. Generally for short trips people can cycle or walk, and for longer trips people can take public transport. You only really need to drive when you need to transport heavy/bulky items or when you are driving out of the city into a rural area. If the money that has been and is being spent on massive road projects was all spent on public transport, you'd likely have a network to rival Tokyo's by now. Of course, I acknowledge that a lot of money has also been spent on public transport already - there are much improved buses and there are new subway lines, but in my opinion, a disproportionate ammount of attention has been placed on road building.

May 11th, 2008, 09:04 PM
Beijing highways don't really follow US highway model. US highways spread and extend straightly to other directions and most of time, the cars hardly circulate in circle. But If we have a look at Beijing highways, the traffic jam most likely started from the intersections of lifted bridges where the cars have to go through the complicated and narrow circles. Even highway designers admitted that the the worst design would go to Xi zhi Men bridge. Sure, it looks pretty from aerophotos, but the reality...:ohno:

With road building, you can never satisfy demand, especially in a country that is developing as fast as China.

'There is no limit for road demand' is a green myth. 'People will leave their cars if you don't provide roads' is another. Madrid (my home city) has constructed tons of wide highways and now we haven't serious traffic jams in most highways even during the rush hours unless it is rainy or something. If they hadn't enlarged them or constructed the new ones, the traffic would be far worse. What's your solution? Doing nothing?

There is a limit for everything, the amount of highways that drivers need isn't an exception. A well planned city MUST provide enough roads so that there aren't chronic traffic jams. Of course 3x2 or 4x2 is not enough for a monster city like Beijing, and I can't believe that you think it is. If they never widen those highways Beijing will be a nightmare for cars and peasants as more and more cars will avoid ring roads and use avenues instead. Avenues have a lot of traffic lights, and therefore you'll have more traffic jams, more noises, more pollution... everywhere. That's not the solution, in fact that's not any kind of solution.

Even if you construct tons of highways most people will prefer subways as long as you construct a huge and good quality network. But a well planned city must provide both systems. A lot of subways and narrow ring roads is a bad model, and so is tons of highways and almost no urban railways. Both models are terrible. It is unfair that you force people to waste 1 hour in their cars everytime they consider that they need to use them for corssing the city.

Then, how much pollution does a single car emit while trapped for 30 mins in a traffic jam? Probably the same amount emitted by several cars along the same route when the traffic is fluid. Fluid traffic saves pollution even if more cars are added. Also 100,000s people wasting 30-60min a day like that has negative effects on the economy. They accumulate stress before starting their works, they are trapped in a car wasting a precious time that they could dedicate to resting, working, spending, leisure or whatever. Almost anything we can imagine is better than being trapped in a car. How do you avoid traffic jams then? Blocking highway expansion will only worsen the problem.

Keep in mind that the Chinese coast has a very high density, world's widest higways will come soon or late as the coastal provinces will be highly developed within one or two decades. You better get used to the idea of a monster highway from HK to Beijing along the coast as well as super wide highways linking the main cities within the 50+ million urban clusters of the Yangtze and Pearl river deltas. Soon or late they'll construct such things, what would people think of a developed country which doesn't even provide something as basic as wide highways for the main flows of cars.

Of course, I acknowledge that a lot of money has also been spent on public transport already - there are much improved buses and there are new subway lines, but in my opinion, a disproportionate ammount of attention has been placed on road building.

I'm not defending the American model. I clearly said that a good model must provide BOTH wide highways and mass transit systems. One of them alone, especially in such a dense country, is unsustainable. The American model is as bad as the green car-phobic model, which only leads to chronic problems of traffic jams and therefore a huge amount of unnecessary pollution.

Beijing is constructing a massive subway network now, that's indeed the top transport for a megacity. We'll see whether it is enough or not to reduce the car use (it wont, you'll see). In the end they'll have to enlarge the highways anyway since such a huge city needs 'a lot of everything'. On the other hand we must face that every citizen of Beijing or any other city has the right to own a car if they want, and we should respect that choice and provide infrastructures following the needs of individuals.

Btw 2 million people wasting 200 hours a year in traffic jams means 400,000,000 hours wasted. The real figures are probably larger, which translated into economic figures mean considerable effects. Construct wider highways, allow Beijingers saving millions of hours and you'll be making a very good investment. Stagnate highway construction in a economically booming and heavily dense city like Beijing and traffic issues will only get much worse ^_^
