This is the newest proposed stadium for Zagreb, Croatia:

I can't see the renderings!!! Sounds interesting.

What do you think about it - do you like it or not, do you consider it to be a landmark and one of a kind or not. Any discussion is welcome.

P.S. Message for Croatian visitors:
(Molio bih ekipu iz Hrvatske da ne glasa jer je namjera ovog polla vidjeti što stranci kao nezavisni promatrači misle o ovome projektu. Hvala!)

Which club will use the stadium and what's the rough capacity? Anyway I voted for no.1 in the poll ^^

PS) To my eyes it looks more like a spaceship from extra-terrestrial world than a volcano

Dinamo Zagreb and it is supposed to be the main stadium for Croatian national team. Capacity will be roughly 55,000 ppl.

It's unique, but i can't say i like it. That scoreboard or whatever it is over the pitch will create all sorts of weird shadows in the daylight games as well.

Dinamo Zagreb has an average attendance between 7 and 8k. Why don’t they build a stadium with a capacity around 10 – 15k? It will be extremely boring with 7000 spectators on a 55. 000 stadium.

Awfull,I dot like it at all.As I am from Croatia,I would be terrified if this stadium would be built. The interior is decent but exterior looks like piece of shit.:(
There are guys in Croatia that apsolutely like this idea saying that this stadium would be a "new Eiffel tower" of Zagreb because of it uniqeness.
Don t see the point of that.

matthemod
May 5th, 2008, 02:44 PM
It's definitely unique! However I think it's another case of a stadium designer trying to design something original, just for the sake of it. Like the Allianz or the proposed Nou Camp. I think the Interior is pretty decent though!

It's for Croatian national team as well. It would probably be full every time when Croatian national team would play on it and it might be full durring some major matches like Dinamo - Hajduk or UEFA matches. But this is not the issue, I am more interested in your opinion about the design, exterior in particular.

I'd need to see a better render of the outside before I could really deside if I liked it, what the cladding looks like it very important in such designs IMHO.

Yeah, that's the problem with it... we don't have other renderings besides these ones.

The present stadium is often empty. There are 3 to 10k people per game, but for each european match and 5 games in league there are over 25k people.
If the stadium was roofed and nicer more people would come.
I dont really like the stadium but it would be great if they builld any.

That's not scoreboard. Thats actually a part of the roof, it is helium filled balloon that can plug the hole in textile based roof to fully cover arena.

So, did they give up on Makismir? Ok, the stadium in itself is ok, Iīve seen uglier exteriors but my question is who is going to finance it and judging by the slowness of construction of Maksimir seems like this project could take years to complete.

Not yet. We will have referendum, choosing to continue Maksimir, or build new one. This one won new stadium contest.

This one is supposed to be built on the other location and in that case Maksimir would stay the same as it is now.

Its for National Team and Dinamo European games mostly.. for our crap domestic league 15k would be enough, thats true.

Maksimir construction stopped due to politics mostly. And that was almost 8 years ago. This is different project as Dinamo needs new stadium ASAP. Maksimir is probably going to be crashed if this passes on referendum.

Yep, they should be able to project score to it. However, it is a volcano, it has to have some cloud of smoke coming out from it! :D

On a serious note, this could be a cheap solution for a full roof with retraction capabilities. Combined with plastic rubber on a facade and a textile roof, this one shouldn't be expensive. We are still waiting for price projections and more details and renderings should be out this week or so.

How is it possible to display scores in a baloon filled with helium in electrical engineering? Maybe helium is something electrical in itself????????

If you're right, I think there will be a serious problem in growing up grass because of the balloon covering the sun unless the pitch is lain with artificial turf or the pitch itself is retractable as in Gazprom Arena which is u/c now...

I wonder what solutions they have about that problem...

For displaying result, one can use laser, i suppose. We don't know yet. Someone was mentioning liquid crystal, but I think that would cost too much.

As for the grass, I don't see too much problem; textile part of roof is translucent, and balloon can go high in the air, so it shouldn't cast too much shadow during a regular, non use day.

A bit better rendering:

http://www.jutarnji.hr/EPHResources/Images/2008/05/06/vulkan1.jpg

Roof is made from ETFE based textile, facade is from recycled car tyre rubber.

Balloon can be white or red-white rectangles (croatian NT color) and has solar panels installed.

Guys, any news on how the referendum went? I'm reeeeeaaaaaally interested but have had no luck browsing Croat websites :)

only this from Javno, Sept22:
http://www.javno.com/en/croatia/clanak.php?id=184790

When did your campaign start?

- During summer days. We expected there would be a referendum for the Maksimir stadium all summer long, we cannot seem to welcome it, so did not go on vacation either –

Should the old location of the stadium remain or should a new one be constructed?

- I have always been for the Maksimir stadium, everyone knows that. When you look at all these big projects in Zagreb, unfortunately, or fortunately, I have to say that the projects the government is involved in can be assessed as successful. All other projects which are attempted to be realised are not realised in the foreseen period –

Two months ago, before financial crisis appeared, it had been said that the referndum should be held around December. However,in the meantime there was no other information in papers...except financial and economic experts ,who are all suggesting that it would be wiser not to invest in sport infratsructure untill crisis is over..

People who knows how is our city ruled knows that this stadium will never be build. Nor this ugly melted blue surface, nor any other project. Lots of architectural tenders are here just to give money to the winning projects and to share the money afterward with corrupted city major. I know for at least 10 tenders in past 4 years that ended in that way.

Croatian BDP per capita is 8.450 EUR and average monthly salary is 800 EUR. Having that in mind here are the money price for this tender.

1. price (Ugly Blue Volcano) - 19.850 EUR
2. price - 13.250 EUR
3. price - 2 x 4.900 EUR

So I think that this thread can be closed because this stadium will never be build. Thanks God!

Who designed it? I mean, he's still alive? :puke:
Hrvoje Njiric, a reknown Croatian architect. Alive, from what I know.

The funny thing is: people have also been laughing of Allianz Arena after it won it's competition. Life's so odd...
(yes - I think that if built, this would be a design of similar magnitude, although not that popular to copy - which would be a definite advantage).

One post after another, but it's been a while.
The referendum in question will be held in May 2009. Citizens will have a choice between rebuilding (from what I understand - completely, including demolition of existing stadium or at least significant parts of it) Maksimir and Plavi Vulkan. To show the general mood let me just say its architect is pesimistic and sees the chances of Vulkan poorly.
Although from what I found in Javno or some other Croatian source, the Maksimir may cost up to 4,3 billion kuna (!), which is over a billion euros (?). The thing I don't know is if it will cost that much including previous refurbishments or with only the upcoming works...

Delmat
January 5th, 2009, 09:42 PM
I think that's not the correct price for stadium. 4.3 billion kuna is about 600 million €. It's impossible

low attendances are there for last 10 years, really low... all because of Dinamo's presidency, and, this season, boycott

but Dinamo, when guys that lead club at the moment leave, as major club in almost one million city, can have 30k per match

I like this concept a lot, and I would like it to be built. Maybe little bit different interior, like one tiered stands, with 40k places.

And this one in Poznan - I would not accept it even if some company comes and makes this stadium for free, and gives Dinamo 100M euros for transfers and so on. As it is gross.

Although i think it would be better to destroy current maksimir stadium and build a new one in its place any change is better then the stadiums current condition.

Anything would be better than current situation.. we have by far the worst stadium even in Croatian league.. not to mention Europe wise.. situation is bad, but since there's too much drama and politics involved in it nothing will change until someone finally bans the ground and closes it for security reasons. I am absolutely pro Maksimir as location, but someone (hello there Mr. Bandić) in city should finally step up and say "listen guys... off to suburbs you go" and build a new ground somewhere else. This status now is just annoying everyone.. not to mention the embarrassment it brings to this club.

This is insane, Dinamo have just 2.000/3.000 spectators at match, what will they do with a stadium of 55.000 seats??

p.s: this stadium is horrible, worse that horrible maksimir!

It would also be the National stadium, I assume

No, games of our NT should be played all over the country, but probably the biggest games will be played here.

Almost none. People in charge of city do not have vision needed for this and are not for such extravagant ideas. And they must fill their own pockets first, so this stadium would cost as twice as somewhere else (where corruption does not exist).

Are you sure? Do you see our Football Federation and it's leaders? :)

I am delighted with this, as I already told. I am just affraid some other city will build this before Zagreb.
