i do not like some (or many) scrapers. too much similar looking ones. but we do not know what's inside. :)

ok. the buildings are not very beautiful to me but the skyline is so amazing. by night, the hideous talls become cool lights that brighten up this big city. i like the formation of the buildings. nice skyline. 7.0/10

the roads are cool. <-side comment.

Tianjin is changing a lot. Just two years ago, when I was here, you really couldn't tell where "downtown" was. In fact, I remember driving out into the country and seeing fish ponds and little Mao-era shacks, and all of a sudden stumbling upon a 40 story skyscraper! Then it was back to the shacks. Now, they're starting to develop a downtown, and it's starting to fill in, although it still has a ways to go. I'll try and take some pictures next time I'm in town on Saturday and post 'em up here.

Well, I finally made it downtown for a bit, and was able to take a few pics. Please, pitty me and my crappy digital camera.

It still needs some work, but I think it is improving immensly. I'll try and take some pictures from the TV tower sometime soon, preferably with my Pentax K1000, and get the pics transfered to digital.

What exactly is a "normal Chinese city"? From what I've seen, there doesn't seem to be anything that can be called archtypical in China. If you are referring to Shanghai, HK, etc, those cities aren't "normal" by any means.

Needs a more clustered skyline. I haven't been to Tianjin; how is it in terms of cleanliness and overall atmosphere?

Clashman

It's actually pretty dirty. Usually the smog is pretty bad. Not quite as bad as Beijing, but still bad. A lot of that is due to the fact that there are a ton of buildings and highways going up right now, and dust is getting kicked up all over the place. They're building an extensive light-rail line, are rebuilding and expanding their subway, and throwing up condos and other highrises left and right. If you think the skyline looks spread out now, you should have seen it just two short years ago. It's come a long ways since then. I think in another 5 years, Tianjin will see a bit of a rebirth. It's spent the last few decades, (probably since the big Tangshan Earthquake), kind of languishing, and it really missed out on the 90's boom that Shanghai, Beijing, Guangzhou, and Shenzhen saw. I think that's going to start changing as Beijing starts shifting some of their Air traffic over to Tianjin, as the Olympics start gearing up, and some of these larger construction projects start to take shape.

A new building going up downtown, (Is this the Tianjin WTC??? I'm not sure).
http://www.tc.umn.edu/~mitt0047/NateUpdate/TianjinCity6.jpg

Tianjin has a lot of old, neat architecture from the imperialist era which is worth noting:
http://www.tc.umn.edu/~mitt0047/NateUpdate/TianjinCity3.jpg
http://www.tc.umn.edu/~mitt0047/NateUpdate/TianjinCity4.jpg
http://www.tc.umn.edu/~mitt0047/NateUpdate/TianjinCity5.jpg

Unfortunately, huges swaths of them are being destroyed to make way for Wal Marts, condos, and whatnot. While I understand the motivations for doing so, (they're a reminder of an unpleasant period of history), I find China's inability to really come to grips with any of it's "5000 years of glorious civilization" that it finds remotely offensive to be troubling.
