^^ the press release during the opening Mall of Asia, it was mentioned that they are planning to put iMax Theater outside Manila ...probably, that would be CEBU, of course!

oo nga, sa SM Cebu naman talaga yung IMAX na itatayo eh.. 3 lang ang plano ng SM Group, one in MOA, another in SM NoE & SM Cebu

thanks for the pics

it's so cool that a lot of people watched the crowning of miss cebu!

congratulations to loise, she was actually my favourite but i just put her behind marguerite coz she was only 5'4 and margeruite was 5'8, loise was more facially attractive though.

i can't believe marguerite didn't make it to the top 5 though. congrats to all of them anyways.

i think na one of the goals sa ms cebu organizing committee is to create awareness sa pageant, thats why they set multiple live showings of the show (some sa baranggay hall, naay projector).. sa una man gud, people from lower income brackets are not very much aware ana, nya kung ipasalida sa abs-cbn kay tungang gabii na man sad.

good move for the organizers.

Miss Cebu lauds city for its religious faith

A 20-YEAR-OLD nursing student who believes that religiosity best describes Cebu City was crowned Miss Cebu 2007 last night.

Loise Angelique Tan bested 10 other contestants in a three-hour pageant that went with the theme “Beauty Beyond Borders.”

Tan also received the Best in Evening Gown award and was adjudged Miss Fuji YKL Photogenic. She took home P50,000 cash and free trips abroad, among other prizes.

Completing the final five were Katrina Isabelle Ros, Maria Ruby Guinto, Maria Theresa Gorgonio and Carlisle Santos.

Interviewed after the pageant, Tan said, “I didn’t expect it. From the start, I was not that confident. But all of a sudden, I was wearing the crown.”

She also explained she described Cebu City as religious because she is a God-fearing person. “He’s the big reason I’m here.”

The annual beauty pageant was star-studded this year, with Miss Universe 2005 Natalie Glebova leading the panel of judges.

Korean actor Kim “Joshua” Sung Min of the Koreanovela “Irene” was a judge, while talk show host Boy Abunda did the casual interview.

Flowers, trophies and cash went along with the special awards Miss Waterfront Friendship and Miss Singha Smile, both of which went to Joan Kristine Uy.

The pageant, which started an hour late, was telecast in nine barangays, while wide screens were set up at malls, the Fuente Osmeña Circle and the Cebu Provincial Capitol.

Cebuano achievers in entertainment performed at the coronation in the Waterfront Hotel in Lahug—Maria Donna, Jimmy Marquez, Panky Trinidad, Jay-r Siaboc, Chai Fonacier—as did the award-winning Cebu City Dancesport Team.

City officials led by Mayor Tomas Osmeña were also present.

Designer and Miss Cebu project chairperson Philip Rodriquez said the controversy surrounding the withdrawal of one candidate “wasn’t too much” to ruin the pageant, although he admitted the candidates felt bad about it.

Preparations have also started for the pageant’s 25th anniversary two years from now. (RCT)

Cebu is now going GLOBAL people. MISS CEBU 2007 is truly a world-class pageant and mind you its a local pageant well-organized like that of the ASEAN Summit. As it gets older, it gets even bigger and better like SINULOG. Dili na ta MAGPALUPIG ANI. Who needs Manila artists when we can start our own entertainment industry here in Cebu. Mas daghan ug talented artists diri pero kulang lang exposure ug support sa local government & private sector.

It's high time that the local government will initiate moves to make our entertainment industry more lively and promoting our own talents globally. Dili na kinahanglan moadto pa ug Manila para mosikat. Our audience is not the Manileños but the world. The limelight is in Cebu for 2007. Kudos to Cebu and SSC-Cebu for making the world see a part of Cebu's vibrant life.

Microsoft to build research facility in Cebu

Microsoft to build research facility in Cebu -- By Regina Aguilar

Giant software company Microsoft Philippines plans to put up a research and development facility in Cebu within a year after opening its first office in the province.

Antonio Javier, managing director of Microsoft Philippines, yesterday revealed plans of the company to tap Cebu's available skilled human resource for its planned facility.

"Cebu has a great deal of content development among its potential pool of workers," he told reporters in an interview.

Microsoft is looking at coming up with a software technology that would boost Cebu's growing business process outsourcing (BPO) industry in the planned research and development facility.

Dear Mr Maunes

Good afternoon, thank you very much for your email.

It would be a wonderful experience for me to visit your beautiful country. I must say I am not able to make any promises concerning hosting for Miss World 2007 but I must thank you for the great honour of you asking that question. It doesn't mean that other years would not be possible but I would need to do a lot of meetings and visits to start this discussion with view to this possibility, which could not be looked at for 2007 or 2008.

But please let me know about your beautiful Cebu.

I can't help but scorn at the sight of Smart's Sinulog Billboards/Banners!

Sinulog is about the Cebuanos' devotion to the child Jesus, Sto. Nino and is not the time to hold an "adfest"! Brandishing your product name as equally visible as the word 'Sinulog' is simply outright commercial-bullcrap!:ohno:

If that was there plan all along (advertising there product) then better make a billboard without the word 'Sinulog'. Mukha silang [referring to the people responsible for that annoying Smart 'Sinulog' Billboard] walang class at decency. Hay nako...nakaka-inis talaga. Gusto siguro nilang puputsahin sila. Cebu Int’l Convention Center after ASEAN Summit: What lies ahead?

By Minerva BC ******

Cebu City (19 January) -- “The 12th ASEAN Summit has raised the standards of the Cebu International Convention Center (CICC) that we cannot just allow baptisms or weddings there,” said Cebu governor Gwendolyn Garcia, in a special Kapihan sa PIA recently.

Governor Garcia added, the local government units of Cebu province and Mandaue City have already met to discuss and thresh out details on the final guidelines, protocols and terms of reference in the management and operations of the CICC.

Currently, both LGUs are managing the CICC. Garcia said, they are looking at the creation of a technical working group that is composed of representatives from both LGUs. “The directions for the CICC meantime, is for it to be managed by a private firm through a “reimbursement-operate-scheme” that would allow the bidding of the CICC to investors, that would reimburse all of its construction expenses in exchange for the right to manage the facility and whose profits shall be shared with Mandaue City and Cebu province,” Garcia explained.

On March 10, 2006 Mandaue City and Cebu province inked a joint venture agreement creating a management board to look into the ‘day-to-day’ operations of the CICC. The joint venture agreement also allows both LGUs to prescribe policies and guidelines for the efficient management of the facility; it also provides that the governor and mayor both co-chair the six-member board, with three more appointees from each LGU.

As can be recalled, Cebu province built the CICC using provincial funds amounting to P515 million in a 43.185 aq.m. lot owned by Mandaue City that is worth P457.63-million. In a Kapihan sa PIA recently, Governor Garcia thanked the Cebuanos for rising to the challenge and helping in many ways to make the 12th ASEAN Summit a rousing success. “The video footages that were beamed throughout the world by CNN, Bloomberg, BBC and NHK showed a beautiful Cebu. The challenge now is to sustain what we have begun and be prepared for the upcoming events. Cleanliness, orderliness and beautification that characterized Cebu during the summit should be made a way of life, not just during those summit days but throughout our lives,” Garcia passionately said. In the same forum, the governor also reported her various accomplishments, specifically her 12-point agenda that include: infrastructure; health and social services programs; peace and order and counter-insurgency campaign; agriculture; tourism among others. Bai, Sinulog has been commercialized for quite a very longtime already. So, it's not a big deal after all. It's like any shows on TV by GMA and ABS-CBN that can't live without this sponsors and commercials.

If we want a grand Sinulog festivity every year. We need this commercials and sponsors.

Although, I think that Sinulog foundation needs to setup rules and regulations about this banners, streamers and banderitas with regards to its content that should be somehow relative to the Sinulog festival. And not just purely a name or any content about the sponsors. But I can see some ads that's really relevant to Sinulog when it comes to the content of their ads.

Thanks for posting the picture of the Sinulog. I was in Cebu last week for a vacation. Too bad I wasn't able to stay for the festivities. :(

Regarding the ads, I guess it isn't so bad considering that it helps. But somehow, seeing ads all over the place instead of the regular colorful banderitas is somewhat tiring.

Kudos to Cebu and SSC-Cebu for making the world see a part of Cebu's vibrant life.

ngee.. humana diay ni? nag vote² pa gyud intawn ko online bago lang. hahaha... sayang si Nikki, pero bata pa man, daghan pa ni siya maagi-an!

anyway, it really is high time for Cebu to reinforce its entertainment industry globally. how can we ever forget that it already has started. many thanks to BIGFOOT Studios, New Cebu Films, etc. :D

Congratulations diay sa ASEAN Summit in Cebu! it's a huge success, makahilak ko ug popcorn sa pagbasa sa inyong mga posts :okay: Thank u kanang naa diha sa cebu for the updates!

The outdoor cafe/resto near Starbucks have also closed down...

After ASEAN, Asian stockbrokers, analysts to meet in Cebu

By Doris C. Bongcac
Cebu Daily News
Last updated 02:32pm (Mla time) 01/19/2007

AFTER the recently concluded 12th Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Summit, another international event will be hosted by Cebu although smaller in scale.

Stockbrokers and financial analysts from 10 ASEAN member-nations will converge in Cebu in March for their annual conference said Cebu City Mayor Tomas Osmeña.

He said the event is beneficial especially to the local economy because it will bring to Cebu the best stock exchange and stock brokers in Asia.

“This gathering is small in scale but we have to give them our attention. These are the people that raise money, that gives financial advices to out corporations here,” he told reporters in a news conference yesterday.

At least 70 stock brokers and financial analysts will attend the conference on March 7, which will be held at the Shangri-La's Mactan Island Resort and Spa in Lapu-Lapu City.

Like in the ASEAN Summit, Osmeña said the city government will hold some activities to entertain the conference participants.

Although he could not provide details, Osmeña said the decision to hold the conference in Cebu was a result of a successful hosting of the 12th ASEAN Summit last Jan. 13-15.

10 Japanese ASEAN Consuls stay to witness Sinulog festival

The Freeman 01/20/2007

Following serious business in the recently concluded Association of Southeast Asian Nations Summit, 10 consuls from Japan have decided to remain in Cebu to witness the Sinulog festivities particularly the much-awaited Mardi Gras tomorrow, January 21.

Cebu City Information officer Nagiel Banacia yesterday said the 10 consuls would definitely be given VIP seats at the grandstand of the Cebu City Sports Complex. However, their accommodation and security would be taken cared of by the Japan consular office here.

Banacia assured security at the sports complex would be very strict to ensure the safety of the dignitaries.

The 10 consuls are among those that composed the official Japanese delegation headed by Japan Prime Minister Shinzo Abe. Japan is ASEAN's dialogue partner and participated in the East Asia Summit at the last day of the event.

ASEAN's other dialogue partners include Australia, India, New Zealand, China and Korea.

Aside from the diplomats, Banacia said there are also foreign journalists who covered the summit and opted to remain here in Cebu to witness the Sinulog. However, the foreign journalists reportedly would not want their identities made public.

Even before it resumed preparations for this year's Sinulog, Cebu City has spent substantial time with its preparations for the summit. The city government was in charge of the foreign media that covered the event.

The city also participated in the spouses program intended to allow the wives of the heads of states to go around Cebu City and neighboring cities of Mandaue and Lapu-Lapu.

The ASEAN Summit resumed last week following a controversial postponement last month. The event was originally scheduled on December 10, 2006 but organizers decided to move it owing to typhoon Seniang that was scheduled to hit Cebu the same day the heads of states were to arrive in Cebu. - Joeberth M. Ocao

Hey guys, I'm doing my catch-up reading. Comment lang, ha. This is a nice building but SAYANG the ground floor (fronting the street) looks very boring.
It looks to me that the front facade, at street level, is going to be just a glass wall, obviously concealing the lower level parking deck behind (Who are they Foolin'?:). I hope I'm wrong.

I wish that city planners, in a sophisticated enclave like Ayala, would require new constructions to always have attractive store fronts or lobbies facing the main street, if only to make pedestrian and foot traffic...a more interesting experience. Window shopping and people watching are always fun.

I sure understand the necessity of multi-level parking in a high rise building, but the problem of integrating the necessary parking structure and an aesthetically pleasing front facade is really nothing that a good architect can't solve. Constructive criticism lang to ha. Pit Senyor!

Ill just attach their reply..here it is

Dear Mr Maunes

Good afternoon, thank you very much for your email.

It would be a wonderful experience for me to visit your beautiful country. I must say I am not able to make any promises concerning hosting for Miss World 2007 but I must thank you for the great honour of you asking that question. It doesn't mean that other years would not be possible but I would need to do a lot of meetings and visits to start this discussion with view to this possibility, which could not be looked at for 2007 or 2008.

But please let me know about your beautiful Cebu.

Kind regards

MWO

i dnt know bout miss world, but in miss universe and miss earth, countries are suppose to bid for hosting rights, like the olympics, i'm pretty sure same goes with miss world, that rumours are though that julia morley this time wants to hand pick the place somewhere in the philippines after she and miss world 2005 will crown bb pilipinas world in march.

i don't think it would be the price since ALL the buildings here in CBP (as what our secretary told me) have the same rate per sq.meter..it's Php475/sq.meter..dili lang jud daw strong ang foundation sa building..our office has been vacated for four years!! and there are a lot of cracks sa walls.. also, naa daw mga mumu.:omg: hehe..:P

SM plans to build more malls in Cebu

By Irene R. Sino-Cruz
Inquirer
Last updated 07:06pm (Mla time) 01/20/2007

CEBU CITY -- Cebu could look forward to more investments in its retail sector as SM Prime Holdings bared plans to build one or two more shopping malls here.

"We are bullish about Cebu," SM Prime president Hans T. Sy said in an interview.

If this plan pushes through, SM Prime would be putting in at least P1 billion to build just one shopping center, Sy said.

Sy was in Cebu on Friday to attend the inauguration of the five streets around SM City Cebu, which were repaired and improved out of the taxes advanced by the mall to the Cebu City government, and the unveiling of a huge billboard depicting the mall expansion called The North Wing.

"Definitely, we're looking into a second and third location for a shopping center here in Cebu. We believe that Cebu is an area where we could still expand," Sy said.

While the company is interested in the South Road Properties (SRP), Cebu City's south reclamation project, SM Prime is also looking at other areas, he pointed out.

"It's still early (to say) but if the numbers are right we definitely will go into (putting up a shopping center in the SRP)," Sy said.

The price of the land and the Cebu City government's development plan would be among the criteria for choosing the SRP as a shopping center site, he explained. "But we're interested (in the SRP)," Sy added.

He said the additional malls would be in the 60,000-sq.m. to 75,000-sq.m. size range -- similar to the SM Supercenters.

However, he said, SM Prime is looking for lots ranging from five to ten hectares to provide the new malls being planned with room for expansion.

He said the P1-billion investment in the The North Wing underscores SM Prime's confidence in Cebu.

"We saw the success of the existing mall and we saw the potential growth," Sy said.

He said the first two floors would be commercial centers while the upper levels would serve as parking areas.

Upon the completion of The North Wing in the third quarter, Sy said SM Prime plans to develop the parking area at the back of the hotel property.

He said the company has to complete The North Wing, which has three levels of parking area, so that there would be no problem with parking when the new development starts.

The concept would be patterned after the Mall of Asia but it has yet to be approved by the board, Sy said.

SM Prime is also eyeing at least two shopping centers in Mindanao, one in Davao and another in Cagayan de Oro, Sy said.

The company also sees Bohol as a potential location for an SM Supercenter but not in the immediate future, he added.

According to Sy, Bohol's infrastructure is not ready yet for this type of investment. "It may take some time. We may go into Bohol, putting in a 35,000 sq.m. size shopping center like the Supercenter," he added.

Sy noted that the Mall of Asia in SM BayCity has been performing beyond expectations.

"The Mall of Asia is now doing very well. We're 50 percent over our projection," he said.

The mall traffic ranges from 300,000 people on weekdays to 500,000 on weekends, Sy said. He disclosed that the company plans to build an aquarium, similar to that in Singapore.

The ongoing construction projects at the 60-hectare SM BayCity include the 5,000-sq.m. Discovery Center, a science museum costing P300 million, a 100,000-sq.m. call center building, and a 50,000-sq.m. international convention center.

i guess that one right below the girl in white below the blue balloons would be me...:D

i'm proud and glad to say that this has been the best procession that i have been to--not just because of the fact that it ended before darkness fell--but more importantly because i got the feeling that 'lakas diay ko ni Lord' :)

picture this...

i woke up at around 12 noon, got dressed up, and left the house at about 2...

there was a roadblock at CCMC, and i had to walk from there to the corner of Kingsmen Pharmacy, thinking to myself that the Senyor would still be in the basilica at that time...only to find out that as i was approaching the corner, the carrosa of the Senyor was already heading towards my way...

so i didnt pass up the great oppurtunity, and i actually pushed myself into the human barrier...i was able to get pass the barrier of NSTP students blocking the sidewalk without any effort, but was stuck all throughout the parade with the human chain surrounding the carroza...but i just didnt want to give up...seems like the 'bato balani sa gugma' got me magnetized...

despite the warnings and taunts of the officers asking us to keep away from the cordon, i just didnt comply...i even remember saying defiant lines to them such as "bisan pa ug pusilon ko ninyo dinhi, dili gyud ko mohawa...tawo ra mo ug Ginoo ang akong gisundan...ang Kardinal ra tingali ang makapahawa nako dinhi..." :D

thus i walked just a few meters from the Senyor all throughout the rest of the procession...daghan kaayo ug photo-op, too bad i didnt bring a cam along...but the greatest thing that happened during my day didnt take place until we reached the cathedral...although i was tempted to step out of the procession so that i could join the rest of the guys at the museum, the draw of the 'bato balani' was just too irresitible...

and who would have thought, that after the procession went pass the cathedral, and after the hermano and hermana, together with their guests left the cordon, i was able to finally penetrate the human barrier, and was able to walk unobstructed within the cordon...

i sped on without having to face any resistance through the now empty street--cleared off of people so that the carroza may enter the gate of the basilica--right into the outer court of the basilica, where no less than the Cardinal himself and some other bishops were anticipating the Senyor...i even remember seeing him look at me, maybe puzzled as to why a civilian got through the cordon...and the knights of colombus and the guards didnt even stop me...and thus when the Senyor finally came in the outer court of the basilica, i was standing there a few meters from the carozza and the Cardinal's entourage...while the rest of the devotees were 'caged' in the other side of the Pilgirim Center and were not allowed to approach until the Senyor was safe inside the basilica...

miracle? i dont know about you...but for me...it truly was...

seems like the Little King has a special place in His heart for me after all...:)

and to cap the day, just as the entrance antiphon of Alleluia was being sung, a rainbow appeared right over the main altar of the pilgrim center...

a sign which, as interpreted by the celebrant Bishop Du, as God's promise, that He will never destroy our people...which inspired a thunderous applause from the crowd more than any part of the Mass...

what a blessed day it was...

having fulfilled my religious duties...it's fitting then that i should go out tommorow and party like there's no tommorow...

maytag magkita ta ugma...Pit Senyor!

<@pirena> Everyone experiences some miracles during the procession or even before, during and after the 9 day novenas. No wonder the devotees to Sto. Niño de Cebu gets bigger every year.

The rainbows seen during the fluvial and at the pilgrim area after the "solemn" procession are signs that Cebu will forever be blest with His protection and guidance. Where else can you find miraculous images of the Holy Family I say "housed separately" within the big cities like St. Joseph (Mandaue City), Birhen sa Guadalupe (Cebu City) & Birhen sa Regla (Lapu-Lapu City), and Sto. Niño (Cebu City). These are the propectors of the Blest Island of Cebu, the Heart of the Philippine Archipelago.

CICC's privatized operation eyed

Sunday, January 21 2007 @ 12:20 PM GMT

Cebu News

The local governments of Cebu Province and Mandaue City have created a technical working group (TWG) that is mandated to draft a set of guidelines for the use of the Cebu International Convention Center (CICC).

Cebu Gov. Gwendolyn Garcia said the TWG's task would include conceptualization, planning and recommending their proposed protocols and guidelines for the use and management of the CICC.

”The CICC’s standards are high because of the 12th ASEAN Summit,” she said. “We cannot just allow baptism or weddings here.”

Garcia said the direction for the CICC is to have it managed by a private firm through a “Reimburse-Operate Scheme” over a period of time.

By this, Gov. Garcia means that the CICC will have to be bidded out to investors who shall reimburse the government of the expenses it incurred in its construction. In return, the government shall give the winning bidder the right to manage the facility. The winning firm shall share its profits with the City Government of Mandaue and with Cebu Province.

In the meantime, Garcia said the CICC's management would be jointly handled by both local government units.

In an agreement signed last year by Governor Garcia and Mandaue City Mayor Thadeo Ouano, the Capitol and the Mandaue City Hall jointly owns the CICC. It means that both LGUs share its operational burden and whatever profits that may accrue to the project.

The joint venture agreement signed on March 10, 2006, stipulates that a management board will be created “to look into the day-to-day operations of the facility.

The agreement allows the Capitol and Mandaue City equal sharing in “laying down and prescribing the policies and guidelines for the effective and efficient operations and management of the project and shall see to it that the same are fully implemented.”

The agreement also provides that the governor and the mayor both co-chair the six-member board, together with three appointees from each LGU.

The CICC was built using provincial funds amounting to P515 million on a 43,185-square-meter-lot owned by Mandaue City, which is valued at P457.63 million.

With the summit officially over, Governor Garcia urged Cebuanos to maintain whatever gains the event achieved for Cebu.

She said the video footages that were beamed by CNN, Bloomberg, BBC, NHK, showed a beautiful Cebu. “Our challenge now is to be prepared for the upcoming events,” she said.

Garcia said cleanliness and orderliness as well as beautification should be made “a way of life.”

The governor attributed the summit's success to two factors – the physical preparation and the people. (PNA)

Cebu hopes to woo investors and tourists from Singapore

CEBU: Attracting foreign investments is key to economic development – and that is what the city of Cebu in the Philippines is going after.

With some US and Japanese companies already operating out of the area, Cebu now hopes to woo investors and tourists from Singapore.

46-year-old Conrado Degollacion knows what a difference foreign investments can make.

The technician works for a subcontractor, Jandex Marine and General Services, which is servicing Keppel Shipyard, a Singapore company.

While an odd job worker earns about 4000 pesos a month, Mr Degollacion takes home 20,000 pesos or S$630.

Even so, supporting a family of 11 with his salary is still a stretch.

But he is among the lucky ones who have got a job.

Mr Degollacion says: "We are hoping that if a company invests in Cebu or Lapu Lapu, maybe 50 percent of the Cebuanos living here will be given priority."

There are many slums around Cebu City as officials say many people have moved here from other parts of the Philippines in search of work.

But the irony is that by doing so, they have actually contributed to the high unemployment rate as there are not enough jobs to go around.

So the city is pushing for not just more investments in its South Road Properties Special Economic Zone, it is also hoping to optimise Cebu's beach attractions by setting up a marina.

Tomas Osmena, Mayor, Cebu City, says: "We are going to put a mega yacht club for visiting yachts from Singapore and Hong Kong to refuel and replenish supplies. There can also be organised visits to several places."

It is hoped that Singapore investors can partner big-name hotel chains to help develop Cebu's tourism sector.

The city is also planning to upgrade its water infrastructure and welcomes Singapore firms like Hyflux to bid for the project.

Joel Mari S Yu, Managing Director, Cebu Investment Promotions Centre, says: "The problem is that the demand for water is here in the open area and nobody seems to be putting the (needed) investment to bring water from the areas where they are bountiful to areas like Cebu. Desalination presents certain advantages – we will never run out of water going into the desalination process."

But Cebu, the second IT hub after Manila, could well run out of qualified manpower.
It has set up a 2 million-peso Seed Fund for training and organising more programmes between the universities and the industry.

Cebu churns out some 22,000 college graduates a year, compared to 100,000 in Bangalore.

Besides providing access to education, the city also has to tackle the housing problem.

The success of the recent Asean Summit in Cebu might have given city officials hope for better things.

But this hope has yet to filter down to many squatter dwellers. - CNA/so

Cebu ‘industrially peaceful,’ says DOLE

By Minerva BC ******

Cebu City (21 January) -- The Department of Labor and Employment in the region (DOLE-7) declared Cebu province as “industrially peaceful” or strike-free in 2006.

DOLE-7 regional director Elias Cayanong said, “So far, no labor strike was recorded in 2006 and to think that Cebu has the reputation of being the business center of the south.”

According to Cayanong, a strike-free province or region attracts foreign investors because they want to be secure of their millions or billions worth of capital investments. “ASEAN businessmen are particularly sensitive to reports about trends in business and conditions of their neighboring countries’ industrial climate,” he added.

DOLE-7 attributed the favorable industrial climate in Cebu to the close coordination and networking with the National Conciliation and Mediation Board (NCMB), the Tripartite Industrial Peace Council (TIPC) and the various chambers of commerce and industry in the region.

Cayanong said, the TIPC membership is composed of government that is represented by DOLE officials; management (business sector) and the workers (labor unions) that chose to sit down and talk peacefully on how to achieve a ‘win-win’ solution in cases of industrial conflicts and strikes.

“The TIPC in the provinces of Cebu, Bohol, Oriental Negros and in Siquijor have been very much instrumental in thwarting labor-management disputes from developing into labor strikes,” Cayanong said.

Wit the highly successful 12th ASEAN Summit in Cebu, several economic and trade pacts have been forged among the ASEAN and DOLE hopes that Cebu’s industrially peaceful atmosphere will encourage foreign investors to come and set up business here. (PIA-Cebu) [top]

Philippines To Gain From 12th ASEAN Summit

January 21, 2007 1:26 p.m. EST

Komfie Manalo - All Headline News Correspondent

Manila, Philippines (AHN) - Philippine Press Secretary and Presidential Spokesman Ignacio Bunye on Sunday said the Philippines stands to benefit from the various accords signed by the leaders of the 10-member Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) during their recently-concluded 12th Summit in Cebu.

"For ASEAN, the preliminary work done by the Eminent Persons Group (which includes former President Fidel V. Ramos), of drafting a Charter is a milestone that is a great leap forward for international cooperation in general, Asia in particular. It bodes well for the region to increasingly take care of its own political, economic and security needs.

"For the Philippines, it showcased the nation at its best and at a time when the economy is going strong, terrorists are being beaten back and the country is a full partner of global affairs," Bunye said.

Bunye pointed out that President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo was "notably proud of the positive reinforcement she received from the other ASEAN leaders on her extensive discussions concerning the Philippine model for peace in Mindanao."

He said that if the ASEAN members adopt this model for peace, the whole region stands to reap the potential benefits such as economic development and security cooperation.

At the same time, Bunye said the ASEAN Summit has provided a perfect venue for the Philippines to project itself as a "competitive location" for multinational and local companies wishing to expand their operations within the Asia-Pacific region.

"Our business delegation offered the Philippines as a strategic location in a fast-growing region, with a well-educated, productive and English-speaking workforce," he said.

"Investors will find abundant investment opportunities in many of our high growth sectors, particularly mining, infrastructure development, agriculture and fisheries, as well as housing," he added.

Digesting the lessons of ASEAN success

OPEN NOTEBOOK
By RANDOM JOTTINGS

Philippines Inc. functions at its superb best—and most proudest—when all its stakeholders put their shoulders together to the wheel instead of pushing and shoving in every which direction.

The just concluded 12th Association of Southeast Nations (ASEAN) Summit is being hailed as one of the most successful gatherings in the body’s over three decades of existence in terms of staging and content.

And considering the logistical trauma thrown up when the 10-nation confab—boosted by six other power players from the wider Asian region—was called off at the 11th hour in December on account of impending typhoon/security (take your pick!) threats, only
to be hurriedly rescheduled barely a month later, it is a monumental achievement indeed.

For a country that is seemingly in a chronic state of introspection this international vote of approval, and the positive vibes generated, is a hugely welcome diversion.

As the nation now wallows in the well-deserved post-summit praise being heaped from all sides both within and without the Philippines there is one fundamental lesson to be digested from the experience: Forget the notion of Imperial Manila and (considering its newly acquired political clout) Majestic Cebu. Philippines Inc. functions at its superb best—and most proudest—when all its stakeholders put their shoulders together to the wheel instead of pushing and shoving in every which direction.

Banging the drum proclaiming the success of the summit, and the “wonderful hospitality” showered on the visiting leaders is New Zealand Ambassador David Pine, who was in attendance in Cebu, where New Zealand Prime Minister Helen Clark was one of the dialogue partners.

We met up with Ambassador Pine last week at his cozy Forbes Park residence, where he hosted a reception to announce the forthcoming New Zealand Week (February 6 to 11) that will serve up juicy Kiwi cultural fare.

Ambassador Pine had every reason to wax eloquent since the summit also marked a fruitful meeting between PM Clark and President Gloria Arroyo, which nicely paved the way for the planned state visit to New Zealand in May by the Philippine leader.

Added Ambassador Pine: “We hope we can reciprocate the same high levels of hospitality during President Arroyo’s visit to New Zealand as was given to our Prime Minister in Cebu.”

Incidentally, an interesting postscript from Cebu was divulged to us by a frequent visitor to the Queen City of the South who was most pleasantly surprised to find how courtesy was still the theme on the roads, with motorists led by taxi and jeepney drivers still in their best ASEAN Summit behavior mode.

“It’s almost as if they don’t know that the ASEAN Summit had ended,” he quipped. Let’s hope that delightful state of ignorance prevails for some time yet!

***

With the movers and shakers from diplomatic, government and business circles on the guest list, we guess it was in order for the lunch hosted by Speaker Joe de Venecia for visiting Chinese Prime Minister Wen Jiabao to be described as a “power lunch.”

But if truth be told, the real “power” discharged during Wen’s visit was, according to our sources, during preluncheon talks held between the Chinese PM and JdV regarding the bid made by the China’s state utility arm, State Grid, for the soon to be privatized
Philippine state-owned power corporation, National Transmission Co. (TransCo), which is embroiled in an on again/off again bidding process.

Besides China’s State Grid, two other foreign companies have been prequalified, namely the Italian utility giant Terna SpA and Malaysian state-owned Tenaga Nasional.

Talk on the business grapevine is that the Italian firm has the most technically superior bid of the three. But what it appears to lack is the all important prerequisite of a really strong connection to the powers that be from among its Filipino partners.

The Malaysian company, on the other hand, has power players Ramon Ang and Henry Sy on board representing the Filipino component of its bid.

And then, of course, there’s JdV batting for China’s State Grid, instantly bringing a combustible political element to the process.

So what’s the real deal? All we can say is that both Chinese PM Wen and Speaker Joe de Venecia were grinning like a pair of
Cheshire cats when they parted!

Sad to say, SSC Cebu peeps wasn't able to gather as a huge group because of Globe Telecom.:ohno:

GLOBE, SMART and SUN also experienced this kind of problem last year, SINULOG 2006... Calls are busy, text messages cannot be sent or will be received after 3 hours na... This SINULOG 2007, again we've experienced this kind of problem...

Other events that is usually affected by this telecommunications problem is during Christmas eve to midnight of Christmas day and New Years eve to midnight of New Years day...

It only proves that SINULOG/Sto. Niño feast day is one of the most celebrated event in the Philippines...

In cases like this you should call a remote telephone number/contact-let say resty for example in manila with different area code (not 915,916,917 or 32) because it won't be as busy as the area codes primarily used by most people in the city which is already flooded by calls or texting. Resty can notify where the rest of the gang is.

Cebu's target: For Sinulog, the world
By GingGing A. Campaña
Sun.Star Staff Reporter
With Rene H. Martel

IT’S high time local choreographers and Sinulog organizers are exposed to other festivals, said Cebu City Mayor Tomas Osmeña.

This way, they are exposed to “more ideas and fresh inputs to upgrade the Sinulog Festival and to go on performing well next year,” he said.

With Manila as a competition in mind, the mayor yesterday announced that Sinulog choreographers and some of the organizers will be sent this year to at least two festivals abroad.

“We will send them this year to Brazil to watch the carnival and to New Orleans to observe the Mardi Gras. We will upgrade our sites and our goals to put Cebu on the map. Without the Señor Sto. Niño, our efforts wouldn’t have mattered. It is an effort of the whole of Cebu to make it what it is today. This is one moment that we can feel proud that Cebu is the capital of the Philippines,” an elated mayor told a big crowd at the Cebu City Sports Center yesterday. Osmeña admitted to the spectators that the judges had a hard time choosing the winners, “as almost all of the contingents performed to perfection.”

“Pait kaayo ang situation kagahapon dinhi (It was a difficult situation). It’s painful to select only a few winners because for me all of them are big winners. Dako kaayo ang problema (It’s a big problem) that you have to choose only a few,” he said in his speech.

Winning contingents of the Sinulog grand parade last Sunday once again showed their award-winning dance steps, costumes, props and music before another big crowd that gathered for the awarding ceremony at the sports center yesterday afternoon.

Internalize

A contest judge said, though, that there is a need for contingents to internalize the worship of the Sto. Niño in their presentations.

Dr. Larry Gabao, Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP) past president, said the Sto. Niño has become almost like a prop in every presentation that the veneration is almost non-existent.

He recalled the time of “legendary” choreographer Melquiades “Mike” Gonzalez, whom he said was always able to produce the proper emotions for his dancers to show in their performances.

“They were able to translate to the audience that emotion that ‘Here we are performing for the Sto. Niño.’ Makikita mo talaga sa mukha ng dancers nya kaya kahit pauli-ulit na ganon, papanoorin pa rin ng mga tao,” he said.

“Ngayon, hindi na nakikita na ang Sto. Niños is being adored. They should renew the veneration. The spirit of worship is no longer there,” he added.

Preparation

Gabao said that while the dancers might have faith in the Sto. Niño, it is different to show the emotion during a performance.

He also emphasized the need for proper costuming. He mentioned in particular a “Reyna Juana wearing a dress with slit up to the hips.”

He likewise emphasized that preparation is really the key to winning.

“Most contingents made early preparations, with new concepts being introduced. And less copying is done,” Gabao said.

In particular, he cited Compostela National High School, which he said had a “very good concept.”

Compostela, though, only took home the fifth spot in the Sinulog-based category after suffering a 20-point deduction for a rule violation.

But Gabao was all praise for the contingent.

“I praise the choreographer in successfully putting the concept into the body of the dance,” he said.

“The best choreographies are almost (all) here in the Sinulog. What matters is execution,” he added.

Upgrade

The mayor congratulated the choreographers, Vice Mayor Michael Rama, the councilors, the police, volunteers, Sinulog executive director Ricky Ballesteros, balikbayans, visitors and out-of-town contingents.

Osmeña also hopes to upgrade everything, including financial assistance to out-of-town contingents, cash prizes and promotional activities.

As to how much, he said he will discuss the matter with organizers and leaders of various contingents to see how the City can help regular visiting contingents.

This year, the Cebu City Government donated P8 million to the Sinulog Foundation that went mostly to cash prizes for all categories and financial assistance to out-of-town contestants and participants to the Sinulog sa Kabataan, Lalawigan and Dakbayan categories.

The foundation’s expenses reached P20 million.

As to his earlier announcement to hold the Sinulog activities at the South Road Properties (SRP), the mayor said the grand parade cannot be held there, as there is no facility that can match the sports complex.

But activities like the Miss Cebu or the Sinulog Festival Queen may be held at the SRP next January.

“We’re running out of ideas. It’s about time to be exposed to other festivals. Those (choreographers) who participated a lot, I think they need fresh inputs. Our competition now is Manila. We have to outclass them. We cannot be second to them,” the mayor told reporters after the program.

Carnival

He said he will find an airline willing to sponsor the trip to Brazil, “as it is not cheap to go there.”

The Carnival is an annual celebration in Rio de Janeiro held 40 days before Easter. It marks the start of Lent.

Another celebration there is the Samba Parade, which is broadcast live to several countries and to all Brazilian states.

Considered by many as the greatest show on earth, this two-day extravaganza lasts 20 hours, with 70,000 participants.

The Mardi Gras in New Orleans is scheduled 47 days before Easter and takes place on any Tuesday from Feb. 3 to March 9.
