diehardbisdak January 23rd, 2007, 05:34 PM Eight Caltex mega-stations planned for Cebu expansion
By Ehda M. Dagooc
The Freeman 01/24/2007
Chevron Philippines, the company that operates Caltex chain of gas stations in the country, is currently evaluating eight possible sites for its network expansion in Cebu province.
Roy Jimenez, Chevron Philippines district manager for retail in Visayas Mindanao, announced that of the eight potential sites, three will be opened within this year here.
Two Mega-stations will be opened in Mactan Island, and one in Danao City, he said.
The other six potential sites in the province, is still being finalized, Jimenez said.
Caltex mega-station concept carries the full-line of Caltex petroleum products, Xpress lube and service bays and the Caltex Starmart convenience store, plus a company partner which operates restaurant, coffee shop, or drug store.
The company recently opened its first mega-station or modern-station in Mandaue City, tapping fast food chain McDonald's as its brand partner.
In other parts of the country, especially in Luzon, some Caltex gas stations have already adopted the dual-brand offering with McDonalds, Jollibee, Starbucks Coffee Shop, and Seattle's Best coffee, Mercury Drug as their business partners.
The dual-brand concept of Caltex was first adopted in the Philippines, in 1996 starting with its Novaliches, Manila mega-station, with McDonald's as its first partner.
This time, the company is going to activate this concept in the Visayas, specifically in Cebu, Jimenez said.
There are a total of 120 Caltex gas stations in the Visayas. Sixty-percent of which are managed by the company, the rest is operated by partner dealers.
According to Jimenez of the total 865 Caltex gas stations all over the country 20 of which have already adopted the dual-branding concept.
In its move to keep its strong presence in the Philippines, Chevron has recently changed its name from Caltex Philippines to Chevron Philippines, while retaining the Caltex brand in all its service stations and retail outlets.
Chevron's name change is in line with the change in their parent company's name from ChevronTexaco Corporation to Chevron Corporation. Several Chevron companies in the Philippines has also changed names like the Caltex (Asia) Limited is now Chevron Holdings Inc., and the ChevronTexaco Malampaya LLC is now Chevron Malampaya LLC.
"We believe that our new company names will strengthen our vision-to be global energy company most admired for our people, partnership and performance. We look forward to sharing this continued success with the Filipino people," said Mark Quebral, the company's manager for policy, government & public affairs.
Chevron is among the largest investors in the Philippines, generating employment for almost 20,000 people. It holds about 22 percent market share of the petroleum retail market.

Bogo and Danao eyed as ethanol plant sites
By Ehda M. Dagooc
The Freeman 01/24/2007
Bogo and Danao have been eyed as potential sites for ethanol plants, this according to Biofuels Act principal Author Bukidnon Representative Juan Miguel F. Zubiri (comment: election time is near...heheheh!).
In his recent visit to Cebu, Zubiri revealed that the enactment of the Biofuels Act of 2006 into a law signed by President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo, has attracted interests from at least 20 local and foreign investors to build biofuel plants across the Philippines, including Cebu.
He said that 15 ethanol plants and five biodiesel plants are waiting to be built in the country, mostly in the provincial areas, that would cost more than P35 billion investments.
Building an ethanol plant, he said would require about P2 billion while a biodiesel plant would need around P1.2 billion.
Among the 15 ethanol plant proponents include Japanese Company Marububeni Philippines, Bronze Oak Philippines and Teves Group of Companies, he revealed.
There are about 20 biofuel plant project proposals waiting for approval in the Board of Investments (BOI).
Aside from northern Cebu towns Bogo and Danao, Zubiri mentioned Davao del Sur and other potential site for ethanol plants.
The five biodiesel plants, will be built in areas of Camarines Sur, Candelaria, Quezon;Vigan, Ilocos Sur; and two in the western part of Zamboanga, Zubiri said.
Enacted as a law early this month the Biofuels Act of 2006 calls for the mandatory blending of at least five percent of bio-ethanol by volume into all gasoline that will be sold as motor fuel within two years.
The law provides incentives to investors including a cap of one percent for 10 years on the taxes imposed on all types of inputs, machinery, equipment, and planting and breeding materials that are to be used in biofuel production, as certified by the Department of Agriculture. Biofuels are also not covered by the Value Added Tax (VAT).
The law also directs government financial institutions like the Development Bank of the Philippines (DBP) and the Land Bank of the Philippines to prioritize financing groups or individuals that seek to engage in biofuel production and feedstocks like sugarcane, coconut palm, jatropha, cassava, sweet sorghum, and corn.
This new law is seen to lessen the country's dependence on imported fuel and achieve energy dependence and more employment and bigger trade opportunities for farmers could also be expected.
A National Biofuels Board (NBB) will soon be formed to formulate implementing rules and regulations (IRR) and assess the impact of the use of bio-ethanol as well as the availability of the local supply of this fuel.
The Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR), Department of Science and Technology (DOST), Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE), and the Department of Agriculture (DA), will be the composition of members of the NBB.
NBB will then increase the mandated minimum blend by up to five percent every two years until it determines a higher limit. The octane rating of all gasohol, however, is to be maintained at a minimum of 87 percent.
Also, the law, penalizes violators with fines ranging from P50,000 to P100,000 per day of violation, confiscation of the gasoline supply that does not comply with the specifications provided and closure of distribution facilities for non-payment of fines and blatant disregard of DOE orders.
Within six months, DOE is expected to phase out the use of harmful gasoline additives and oxygenates which have been found to be hazardous to both health and environment.
diehardbisdak January 23rd, 2007, 05:42 PM Chowking - Redemptorist, Cebu
COOKING WITH CHARACTER By Dr. Nestor Alonso II
The Freeman 01/23/2007
Once upon a time, a fresh graduate of University of the Philippines (B.S. Business Administration) began his career with a job in the Makati Supermarket. After two years, he resigned for further studies with an MBA at the Asian Institute of Management.
After a short stint at Ever Emporium, he joined Ling Nam, a traditional Chinese noodle house partially owned by his family and run by one of his uncles.
Ling Nam Noodle Specialty Restaurant was established in 1950 in Binondo, Manila. Also, once upon a time, when your favorite food columnist was also a young man, he began his trips in the fascination world of Chinese food in Chinatown and was one of the eager customers of this restaurant.
After eight years, five branches and family problems (a house cannot have two masters, most specially in Chinese tradition when the other master is an elder!), he resigned upon the advise of one of his many friends like Henry Sy of SM (a real nice friend to have!).
With the traditional panciterias going out of style and the fast food business dominated by western foods, there was a need to bridge the old and the new. The Ling Nam creator toyed with the idea of offering traditional Chinese food in a novel setting.
Thus in 1985, with the help of another friend, Tony Yap Caktiong (owner lang of Jollibee!), he founded Chowking, with a vision that one day this company would become an international fast food chain. Standardization is the key in the Chinese fast food industry. Chowking style starts with the R&D process with Hong Kong chefs' decision on what products to sell, then Philippine chefs' training and preparation and finally, automation to maximize the company efficiency.
American fast-food giant, McDonald's, has perfected this process starting with Hamburger Universities (seven worldwide!), and a supervision system with company supervisors disguised as customers (a la James Bond!), checking food quality and services. Wow, this would have been the perfect education for your favorite food columnist, graduating with honors, BS Hamburger, MS French Fries, and PhD in Drinks, with honors, pa! In 1989, the franchising program enabled the company with limited resources to penetrate new markets and, at the same time, local entrepreneurs are provided investment opportunities. The franchisees become members of the Chowking family and they have to study the preparation of rice chow, chicken supreme, chao fan, lauriat, salo salo crew, salo salo set, halo-halo fiesta, almuchow….etc. (As usual, too much study generates headaches and I need my daily dose of tranquilizing cognac!)
In November 1999, Chowking had 155 stores with three branches in the USA and three in the Middle East. The founder of this Philippine-based Chinese fast food chain (selling noodle soups, pancit, congee, dimsum and rice toppings), Mr. Robert Kuan, sold Chowking to fast-food giant, Jollibee.
Why? " Because the price was good and it was time to let go," replied Mr. Robert Kuan with a smile. Last Monday, January 15, 2006, the newest member of the Chowking family (phone 412-6559, 416-4888) opened in Gotianuy St, right in front of the Redemptorist Church.
Now, I have the convenient place to savor my Chowking favorite: beef wanton (off course, large gyud!) and century egg.

diehardbisdak January 23rd, 2007, 06:23 PM Developer to build new shopping center at recla (Mandaue)
Sun-Star Online
24 Jan '07
TARGETING retail shop operators, information technology (IT)-related establishments and government offices as tenants, a local developer will begin construction of a mall building at the Mandaue City reclamation area next month.
Carlos Co, president of Golden Great Value Properties Inc. (GGVPI), said the firm will invest P200 million to P250 million for the development and construction of Parkmall at 168 on a parcel of land at the Mandaue reclamation area.
Co said GGVPI plans to open the mall in October this year.
He, however, clarified that Parkmall at 168 is not the same as the 168 Mall in Manila. Instead, it is named as such because its address is 168 Ouano Ave. in Mandaue.
Co said GGVPI is trying to ink a deal with Cebu-based companies as business partners.
GGVPI is leasing nearly six hectares of the reclamation land, including the unfinished Uniwide building adjacent to the Cebu International Convention Center, at P10.50 per square meter monthly.
The mall’s lot area will comprise 1.8 hectares of the entire leased property.
Co said tenants can already start moving in by July.
He said the company is currently accepting reservations to fill up the 300 leasable lots for the commercial complex.
Based on the project description submitted by GGVPI to the Mandaue City Government, the units will measure 1,000 square meters, with provisions to subdivide them into 500 square meters.
“So far, only 15 tenants have applied,” Co said in an interview last Friday, adding that the company is profiling potential tenants similar to that of a mall in Manila which carries a “tiangge” concept.
The first floor of the mall will be utilized as a commercial center while the second floor will comprise several government offices and call centers.
To ensure smooth operation for its IT clients, the mall will have a back-up generator set.
A parking area with 500 slots and a well-guarded jeepney terminal will also be built to provide convenience and security to the IT employees.
Co also said that Parkmall at 168 will also be anchored with Puregold, a grocery store.
Earlier, he said investors at the GGVPI are set to generate 500 to 1,000 jobs.
**************** another article about SM expansion in Cebu*********
SM bares plans to build 2 more malls in Cebu
Sun-Star Online
24 Jan. '07
AFTER more than 10 years since it opened its first mall in Cebu, SM Prime Holdings Inc. (SMPHI) revealed plans to invest P2 billion for the construction of two more branches in the province.
“We’re looking at feasible sites in the northern and southern part of Cebu, although we cannot set any timeline (yet),” SMPHI president Hans Sy told a press conference last Friday.
Sy did not disclose the possible sites of the future branches, but said he will be inspecting the South Road Properties, the 300-hectare reclamation project of the Cebu City Government.
He said the company is eyeing a 65,000- to 70,000-square meter property for each mall.
He said construction of the two future malls, which are expected to cost P1 billion each including land value, will begin construction once the SMPHI has found land for the projects and after the completion of its SM City Cebu expansion project.
SMPHI is constructing the SM City Cebu Northwing, which is a five level annex to its existing 13.8-hectare property at the Cebu North Reclamation Area.
The 10.9-hectare annex is estimated to cost between P200 and P300 million and is expected to open in May this year. It has a net leasable area of 17,677 square meters in the first two levels, and will have parking spaces on three floors and a roof deck that will be able to accommodate about 1,946 vehicles.
The Northwing, which is designed for the upper class market, will house upscale shops, specialty shops, comfort lounge, concierge, entertainment area and restaurants —including al fresco dining establishments.
Sy said the two additional malls to be built in Cebu are proof that the local retail industry remains to be bullish.
“We’re really serious and bullish about Cebu. In fact, it’s our priority area for Visayas and Mindanao projects,” he said.
SMPHI will inaugurate next month its SM Bacolod branch in Negros Occidental, bringing to four the total number of malls in the Visayas.
While SMPHI has a property in Tacloban, Leyte, Sy said the company has not yet decided to build a mall there.
Sy, along with other SMPHI and Cebu City Government officials, attended the inauguration of the five rehabilitated access roads at the North Reclamation Area last Jan. 19.
SM advanced P50 million to the City Government for the improvement of the 2,199-meter long roads around SM City Cebu.
The road improvement was implemented in time for the Association of Southeast Asian Nations summit last Jan. 10 to 15. MMM
fundraiser January 23rd, 2007, 06:36 PM ^^ right after they finish the northwing, there were reports that they will develop the parking lot just behind the unfinished hotel. i hope they build a trade exhibition center or maybe another convention center (just like the MoA) their hotel would be more attractive to potential investors if they have this kind of facility.

Firm set to deliver New Caledonia orders
Sun.Star Cebu (http://www.sunstar.com.ph/static/ceb/2007/01/24/bus/firm.set.to.deliver.new.caledonia.orders.html)
THE massive funnel-like structures visible at the Cebu International Port are ready for delivery to New Caledonia.
The five structures, called thickeners that each stands 20 meters and has a diameter of 20 meters will be loaded today on M/V Happy Buccaneer bound for New Caledonia.
Fabricated by Metaphil, a division of the Aboitiz Construction Group Inc., the thickeners —containing over 1,306 tons of steel—were ordered by the Australia-based Outokumpu Technology Pty. Ltd., for their owner, CVRD Inco Limited, a Canadian company.
Thickeners are devices for separating minerals like silver, gold and copper from their host rock materials. These devices are used in mining and smelting industries, particularly in New Caledonia which has more than 20 percent of the world’s known nickel resources.
The load-out ceremony will be witnessed by government officials, some members of consular corps, mining and engineering professionals and other guests.
The ceremonial loading will be headed by Metaphil board chair and chief executive officer Roberto Aboitiz, president Napoleon Pe and vice president Iker Aboitiz. Outokumpu project manager Barrie Macnoughton and CVRD Inco Limited’s Simon Courtenay and William Meyer.
Aside from New Cale-donia, Metaphil has established presence in Singapore, Australia, the Caribbean, South America, the Middle East and the United States for various projects. It has also formed partnerships with valued clients such as leading global companies Dow Chemical Co. and Technip USA Corp.

dabert January 24th, 2007, 04:34 AM from the Skylines of the Philippines thread..
While I'm on my way to work this morning, passing by my daily route from home to work and vise versa. I pass by 1 of the many low rise buildings that are currently under construction, and I realized that why aren't we posting them here. In fact, 2 of them just recently finished. This 2 low rise buildings stands from 3 to 5 storeys, and they look modern in design.
I have observed from the threads of other cities, that they're so proud, happy and excited to post proposals and under construction of low rise buildings.
But here, we're not that upbeat to post those so called midgets. I know that there were low rise proposals and under construction that were previously posted in the past threads. But as what I have said, we're not that upbeat with it. Just my observation. I'm saying this because, actually there are a lot of low rise buildings that are currently under construction compare to the number of skyscrapers that are under going the same state.
Why?
Is it just because this is Skyscapercity and we're just suppose to post Skyscraper proposals and under constructions?
Or is it just because that I don't have a digital camera to take shots of those low rise buildings? hehehe
I hope that we can give a bit or 2 or 3 bit higher attention to those midgets.
actually bai, i think the ssc-cebu forumers are kinda immune already to these kinds of u/c low-rise structures coz we see them almost everywhere sprouting. it's like saying we're on the next level of u/c satisfaction and that's an indicator of the existence of several major high-rise edifices being constructed now. mag-post bitaw sila lakaw-boys ug mga u/c bisan low-rise pr0 wala lang kaau excitement.. heheh

fundraiser January 24th, 2007, 05:04 AM ^^ yup bai, i think we are immune to low-rise U/C already, its like our level of satisfaction with regards to construction has gone a bit higher. iba na ang standards ng SSC-Cebu. kasi actually, cebu lang ang may hi-rise/skyscraper development of this magnitude outside manila. and were more interested in big commercial areas and constructions like CICC, cebu boardwalk, SRP, roads, etc...these are developments that spur further growth and always serve as catalyst for job generation and because of our deep interest with this big projects, we fail to notice small constructions that is almost in every corner of the metro. pero bisan man sigurog kinsa ug asa, if you are in a place were there are BIG and small projects or constructions, you will find the big projects more interesting. bigger projects tend to serve a bigger purpose man gud. but if walang big constructions sa imong place, the only way for you to go is post these midgets in your thread, diba? fortunately for cebu, we have both the midgets and the giants, but of course, midgets or giants, basta developments for and in cebu, we always welcome them

fundraiser January 24th, 2007, 05:53 AM Commentary: Cebu grows out the small dot
by NB Edaga
Cebu City (23 January) -- Cebu is just a small dot on the map. But that small dot does not remain as small as it is. Somehow, it has been on the map since the day Magellan discovered it in 1521.
Events in Cebu has enlarged that dot into a circle big enough to be known at par with imperial Manila - the synonym of the Philippines.
The ASEAN summit and the Sinulog festivities are twin events this year that Cebu can be proud of.
The hosting of the summit was in itself a test of Cebu’s capability of handling international events where lives and safety of ASEAN dignitaries and locals are literally in the hands of its local officials.
It is also a show of Cebuano hospitality, culture and a parade of Cebu’s rich and colorful history.
The preparations for the holding of the ASEAN summit raised a host of seemingly unending controversies which eventually concluded its success.
Success in the sense that the leaders of 16 nations were united in their vision of creating one community in East Asia through community building and people’s participation; with due recognition to the strength of its youth who are builders of the ASEAN’s bridges for the future. The ASEAN Charter and the Cebu Declaration has wrapped it all in defining the region’s future.
The Sinulog festivities known as the queen of all festivals, has its own story to tell. Foreigners and peoples from all walks of life flock to Cebu just to witness the yearly celebration and declaration of faith in the Holy Child or the Sto. Nino.
For this year, the Sinulog organizers have estimated 2 million devotees paid homage to the Sto. Nino and also joined the 10 hour-parade. Crowd control was a challenge but Cebu’s peace-keeping force have tough it out.
These two events are feats that turn Cebu from a small dot to a bigger circle. And as the dot becomes a bigger circle, local officials like Governor Gwen Garcia wants to make Cebu a destination for convention in the region. Mayor Tomas Osmena, on the other hand, wants to make a “grander, made–for-TV” show next year. (PIA 7) [top]

Pastilan, mas maayo pa man to si VALIUM or TOYBOY nimo kay punto per punto pa mo comment kung dili lang ka pikon ug balat sibuyas.
Talu ang pikon at balat sibuyas kaya kung na banned si VALIUM or TOYBOY, huwag ka na lang i-ban para at least may kagaw diri which makes the world lives to its truest sense that is really imperfect, and makes the Philippines a crab with an onion in a platter.
I never thought that Skyscrapercity Philippines is somehow and partly compose of a bunch of crab with onion skin.

Sinjin P. January 24th, 2007, 10:25 AM Developer to build new shopping center at recla (Mandaue)
...
A parking area with 500 slots and a well-guarded jeepney terminal will also be built to provide convenience and security to the IT employees.
Oh no, jeepneys will penetrate the Mandaue Reclamation Area! :ohno:
....
Sounds good. Ayala's Megastructure will add 6,000 square meters of leasable area while the leisure oasis will add another 20,000 square meters of leasable area which means that Ayala Center Cebu's expansion is larger in terms of retail space
Wow, all the malls, come, come, come!
Sinjin P. January 24th, 2007, 10:30 AM So this afternoon was my first time to dine with my family at the new Jollibee branch at the Mandaue Reclamation Area. I was kinda impressed because the interior architecture was modern, there was a lot of glass making the whole place bright and airy. Their seats are modern and comfortable too. Really good. And their "On the Go" concept is proving itself to be successful

Sinjin P. January 24th, 2007, 11:31 AM from the Skylines of the Philippines thread..
Is it just because this is Skyscapercity and we're just suppose to post Skyscraper proposals and under constructions?
Somehow yes. If you see, the flagship section for each country should have been the Projects on the Rise section because in the first place, this is a skyscraper and urban focused forum. And when you say urban in The Netherlands, where the founder of this site is from, and elsewhere in the world, the first thing that would come to mind would be skyscrapers. Parang iba yata ang definition ng urban sa Pilipinas kaya kahit ang pinakaprobinsya ay may sariling thread, a unique offering that only SSC Philippines is able to give.

im sorry mr. mod but i also have to react to this, ngano masuko man na sila na were not even implying a particular city for that matter? hans_boy is even saying nga nganong wala man natagad ang mga midget developments sa cebu. and the way they react.... PS. and oh yeah, cebu never wanted to be a manila, but to that guy who posted that comment, in fairness to him, wala naman siyang sinabi na he's directing his comment to cebu, but anyway, im just stating a fact na CEBU NEVER WANTED TO BE A MANILA, for G's sake, manila is manila and cebu is cebu, may sariling identity and may sariling strength and weaknesses, we never intended to be a manila, cebu is global, you know, we want to be HONGKONG, hehe, and oh yeah, you can be singapore, diskarte nyo na lang yun!

diehardbisdak January 24th, 2007, 05:53 PM SM hopes to seal Sheraton partnership deal in 6 months
By Ehda M. Dagooc
The Freeman 01/25/2007
SM Investments Corporation is looking at six months until the company can decide which international hotel chain will be its partner to pursue the company's unfinished Cebu hotel project.
In an interview with Hans Sy, SM Investments Corporation executive vice president, he said that the company is now in negotiations with three international hotel chain brands, however he refrained to divulge the identities of the companies.
Sy dismissed impressions that the SM Group has lost interest in pursuing the Sheraton Hotel in Cebu, saying interest is still there, in fact his sister Teresita Sy-Coson is talking with these potential hotel partners.
The SM Group is trying to seal a deal with a hotel chain that can put in equity to the project, not just a management deal contract.
According to Sy, SM cannot manage a hotel, and would rather give it to a management chain, as hotel business is not SM's forte.
The unfinished hotel project is designed as five-star hotel, with 470 rooms, but the Sy family is apparently prioritizing its shopping mall projects, such as the newly opened P6.5 billion mall project, the Mall of Asia located in SM Central Business Park, Bay City, Pasay City, Metro Manila.
The Henry Sy led company, has invested about P300 million for the construction of the towering (supposedly Sheraton) Hotel project, located right across SM City Cebu shopping mall. The company still needs about P1 billion additional investments in order to fully complete the hotel construction.
He added that the company is bullish about Cebu, especially on its retail business, as well as its tourism potential. The very reason why they are pursuing the completion of the hotel and hopefully seal a deal with a partner within six months.
However, he said the time frame may change, depends on the development of the negotiation.
Because of its strong confidence for Cebu, SM Prime Holdings, Inc. (SMPHI) is in fact, ready to spend about P2 billion for building two more shopping malls in Cebu.
Cebu has only three five-star accommodations, these are resorts located in Mactan Island, the Shangri-La's Mactan Island Resort and Spa, Plantation Bay, and Cebu Hilton Resort and Spa.
Cebu City has no five-star hotel accommodation yet, Sheraton Cebu might just be the first five-star City-based hotel.
diehardbisdak January 24th, 2007, 06:06 PM Farmers’ first harvest coffee launched in Cebu Saturday
Manila Bulletin
25 Jan. '07
A fiesta-themed musical will usher the much-anticipated return of Nescafe Classic First Pick, a limited edition coffee made from coffee cherries handpicked by Filipino farmers during the beginning of the harvest season. The first of a series of celebrations will be held on Saturday, January 27, at the Ayala Center Mall in Cebu City.
After Cebu, the celebration takes to the road with repeat performances scheduled for February 10 at Glorietta Mall in Makati and on February 17 in Davao City. Performances will be held at 1 p.m., 3 p.m., and 6 p.m. at each of the mall venues.
Continuing a tradition that began in 2006, this year’s edition of the Nescafe Classic First Pick celebration kicks off with a musical extravaganza designed to delight the senses. It will feature popular performers such as Zsa Zsa Padilla, Toni Gonzaga and Heart Evangelista.
Featuring production numbers that capture the optimism and excitement of the year’s first coffee harvest, the show pays tribute to both the quality of Philippine coffee and the rich harvesting traditions of Filipino farmers.
As Bruno Olierhoek, Nestle’s business executive manager for the coffee business unit explains, "The year’s first coffee harvest is always a joyous occasion for everyone in the coffee industry. And the Philippine fiesta, with its exuberance for life, is the perfect theme for the Nescafe Classic First Pick launch."
"There is something truly magical about the first coffee harvest of the year and we are very eager to share this experience with everyone through our celebration of Nescafe Classic First Pick," he adds.
The Nescafe Classic First Pick is stamped with the Kape Isla seal, a guarantee that the product uses 100 percent Philippine coffee.
Coffee has long been a part of Filipino farming traditions. It continues to be a valuable source of income for many farmers throughout the country. Nestle, which sources coffee from around 100,000 Filipino farmers, also interacts with an estimated 300,000 people in the Philippines who are in some way involved in the planting, harvesting or processing and trading of coffee.
No wonder then that the start of the harvest season is greeted with so much enthusiasm by so many people throughout the country.
In addition, the first ripe and red coffee cherries picked at the beginning of the harvest season with loving care, when carefully selected and roasted bring you a unique, fresh and flavorful cup of coffee that you too can savor with the Nescafe Classic First Pick.
Apart from its distinct taste and aroma, the Nescafe Classic First Pick is also packed with anti-oxidants naturally present in coffee – tiny molecules that help neutralize the body’s free radicals that attack the cells’ membranes and cause oxidative stress that may lead to cancer and other degenerative diseases.
The Nescafe Classic First Pick is available in two packages — the 50g jar and the 100g jar. They are now available in leading supermarkets nationwide.

January 25th, 2007, 12:29 AM This question just popped out of my mind: Why wasn't the Watefront Airport Hotel and Casino in Mactan used as one of the hotels for the ASEAN Summit delegates despite its proximity to the airport? As I remembered though, the said hotel was criticized for its low ceiling.

fundraiser January 25th, 2007, 06:45 AM a very interesting article about the possible origins of the visayans
the sri vishayan empire (http://www.vizvoyz.freeservers.com/custom.html)
some excerpt.
Sri Vishaya ruled from the Malay Peninsula up to perhaps Western Java at its peak. It had diplomats, traders, sailors, an international seaport, and, according to its own inscriptions, an army of 20,000. As middlemen, they monopolized the highly lucrative Persian trade.
Cebuano may be the purest form of Binisaya. Ilongo root words are mostly Cebuano, with a significant admixture of Tagalog. The Ilongos are also geographically close to the Tagalogs. Waray root words are also mostly Cebuano, with a significant admixture of Bicolano. The Warays are also geographically close to Bicol. In Mindanao, the native forms of Binisaya are dialects of the Cebuano language. Take note though that Cebuano language is a technical term that not all its native speakers are accustomed to.
One hypothesis is that Visayan consciousness and language spread from Cebu. Northwest it mixed with Tagalog, forming Ilongo, and northeast it mixed with Bicol, forming Waray. South to Mindanao, it retained its Cebuano form.
Alternatively, the northward spread gave birth successively to the Ilongo and Tagalog as well as the Waray and Bicolano languages. This hypothesis is correct only if it can be shown that Cebuano is relatively the oldest of the five languages while Bicolano and Tagalog are the youngest. Note also that Tagalog and Bicolano are intimately related to no other indigenous language in the Luzon mainland so it is not difficult to trace a Visayan root.
It does not follow that the Sri Vishaya spoke an archaic form of Cebuano. Ilongos, Cebuanos and Warays share the same root and may in fact have descended from the Sri Vishaya, an empire acknowledged today to be the greatest Malayo-Polynesian nation ever. They share equally of this sterling heritage.
Ages before Manila imposed its Tagalog language on the Philippines, Visayans already were predominant outside of Luzon. In Samar and the Leytes. In coastal Iloilo, Capiz (where an unusual form of Ilongo, Capisnon, is spoken) and the Negroses. In Southern Masbate, Cebu, Bohol, Siquijor, Camiguin, Misamis, Lanao del Norte, Zamboanga, Agusan, Surigao (where an unusual form of Cebuano, Surigaonon, is spoken), Bukidnon and Davao.
Curiously, the Karay-as and Aklanons of Panay also consider themselves Bisaya. Binisaya is not how they call their languages though. They must be pre-Visayan peoples with their own proud history and traditions who have since coexisted with their Ilongo-Bisaya neighbors.
It is never too late to expand one's knowledge of the past. Embarrassing as it may be to the Manila government that the Bisaya it has tirelessly repressed is indeed descended from the great Sri Vishaya, the pursuit of historical truth justifies itself. If not, then for the sake of our young who can only take so much of self-serving and subjective official Philippine history.

but what i dream for cebu is a SUPER EXCLUSIVE resort where the stars of hollywood, can escape all the chaos in hollywood and those annoying paparazzi's and spend $5000 a night to rent the whole resort. coz everytime i watch like tv shows, the stars always go to the caribbean and they spend SERIOUS amount of money, and i'm just like cebu looks better than that LOL, i am kinda biased too. and Beckham and posh spice went to Thailand and spent lots of money on a $3000 a night resort, cebu seriously has sooo much potential. i hope that the room shortage problem will be solved soon and then when it is, cebu should promote itself in european countries, like here in switzerland especially in the winter time!

on leaving the heart in Cebu...
in 2002, when i first set foot in Cebu, i knew i'll be leaving my heart here forever. i have been taught how to assert my rights in the very soil where lapulapu defended what was rightfully his. with my pen and paper, i nurtured my craft under a tree house in the muddy suburbs of mactan. i have learned to give up my high heels and tube tops for flipflops, walking shorts and oversized shirts. i have tread through the narrow pathways of carbon market and under the scorching heat of fuente sunlight with raised fists, and went home as a new person.
in 2004, i etched one of this lifetime's heaviest baggage in one of the then-newly cemented part of pier singko. it was in here that my young heart learned to love more than it could bear. it was in here too, that it broke and fell apart.
in 2005, with the man that broke my heart, i went back to where i left the mark of my heartbreak. i found it, covered with dirt and dust and rust. it remained a dispensable part of the pier that kept silent inspite and despite the reunions and goodbyes that it catered in its bosom. i went back to that part of cebu and buried all the pains there forever, in front of the one that caused all those pains. i have loved him and have gotten over it. we walked away as better persons.
in 2006, i felt i needed to redeem my heart, so i left a rather relaxed lifestyle and opt for an exodus to my heart's graveyard---Cebu. the things that happened between then and now will take hours and hours of jotting down so i'd rather not to enumerate those. i have been through hell and back, but i was happy. i still am.
five years since i first left my heart in Cebu, and five years of taking the heaviest and roughest turning points in my life, i am glad to say that i have come out, happier, better and more self-actualized.
i have also learned how to make my joys simple...

mhe-ann January 25th, 2007, 08:58 AM hi guys. help naman. we're going to cebu and bohol on april 4-8. can someone give me a list of hotels or kahit simpleng bahay na puede naming tuluyan? our group composed of 12 people. mas affordable mas okay. thanks!!!
habagatcentral1 January 25th, 2007, 09:15 AM a very interesting article about the possible origins of the visayans
the sri vishayan empire (http://www.vizvoyz.freeservers.com/custom.html)
some excerpt.
^^Pao. No reason of comparison and will not instigate war. (you know me, hehe!) :D
Just a correction. This is not the case of Hiligaynon (Ilonggo). Its roots are from Panaynon languages of Aklanon or Kinaray-a. Ilonggos tend to understand more of Kinaray-a than Cebuano and Aklanons can understand Kinaray-a.
The Hiligaynon language evolved from the Ligbuk and Kinaray-a or even Inati (Ati language, strikingly similar to Kinaray-a, Ligbuk of the Bukid Sulodnons and Aklanons) of ancient Panay. Since the centers of trade were Jaro and Molo before there was Iloilo, it was believed to be here that Hiligaynon started. Kinaray-a was influenced by other languages as well due to frequent contact of other peoples.
And Hiligaynon itself, being under one family-language (Malayo-Polynesian) has some similar words of that of Cebuano or even Tagalog or even Bahasa.
In other words, we never evolved out of Cebuano. We have our own language evolved from Panay. The thing is that our languages are kissing cousins. We are family. :)

So this afternoon was my first time to dine with my family at the new Jollibee branch at the Mandaue Reclamation Area. I was kinda impressed because the interior architecture was modern, there was a lot of glass making the whole place bright and airy. Their seats are modern and comfortable too. Really good. And their "On the Go" concept is proving itself to be successful
they say this is the first theme-based jollibee store in the Philippines, which in this case is car-racing. in other words, you won't find anything like that anywhere else (at least for now) o dba? tito tony tan caktiong must love Cebu. hehe.. in fact, cebu is also home to the first Jollibee net-cafe in the country, which is in Mango Avenue :D

Metaphil's value for quality impresses Caledonian buyer
By Ehda M. Dagooc
The Freeman 01/26/2007
Aboitiz Group's construction arm, Metaphil has shipped out five fully assembled mining thickener devices worth 5 million Australian dollars (worth P189 million) to New Caledonia, in North America.
This is the first fully assembled devices exported by Metaphil to its client Outokumpo Technology Pty. Ltd., a supplier of CVRD Inco Limited, based in Canada, which is the second largest nickel producer.
The huge thickener device designed to separate minerals like gold, silver, copper and others from their host rock materials.
The ceremonial loading of the five devices was held Wednesday at the Cebu International Port (CIP).
According to Metaphil chairman and chief executive officer (CEO) Roberto E. Aboitiz this is the first time that the company has exported a fully assembled mining device, as it has only sold pre-fabricated industrial materials overseas.
Metaphil started to venture into the export market some six years ago. Aboitiz said all were shipped in pre-fabricated form, ready for assembling in the country destination.
Barrie MacNaugton, Outokumpu project manager said the company is considering additional orders from Metaphil in the future.
Because of the high cost of manufacturing this kind of devices in Australia or Canada, MacNaugton said the company decided to outsource this needed devices. Among countries that have been considered for offshore deals were Indonesia, and Thailand. But, it settled with Metaphil group here in Cebu saying "we were impressed with Metaphil's value for quality."
Thickeners are most useful for nickel mining and smelting industries in countries like New Caledonia which has more than 20 percent of the world's nickel resources. This device separates through various processes like using gravity, flotation, jigging, grinding, drying, filtering, crushing, among others.
Including the grillage supports, the five thickeners weigh a total of 1,306 tons of steel structure. Each thickener measures 20 meters in diameter, is 23.2 meters high and weights 243.4 tons.
Metaphil specializes in Electro-Mechanical and Civil projects including steel fabrication works on a design, installation or turnkey basis.
About 40 percent of the total business of Metaphil, is exports, said Aboitiz.
Aside from New Caledonia, Metaphil has established presence in other countries like Singapore, Australia, the Caribbean, South America, the Middle East and the United States.
"This event once again showcases the ability and skills of Cebuanos as world-class builders of industrial plants and equipment," Aboitiz said during the ceremonial loading attended by key players in the business sector in Metro Cebu, and political leaders like Cebu City Mayor Tomas R. Osmeña.

diehardbisdak January 25th, 2007, 06:00 PM Architecture in Cebu
By Archt. Dianne Gandionco
The Freeman 01/26/2007
There's no arguing that the year 2006 definitely made its mark on the Cebuanos. What with all the countless events both pleasant and tragic that happened in the past year, jump starting this New Year with a predicted monstrous traffic jam during the ASEAN Summit that surely gave us a whack.
Kidding aside, anticipating and preparing for the summit for nine months has given Cebu a fast-tracked enhancement on its overall development, including construction and architecture. In this regard, the building of the Cebu International Convention Center (CICC) is an evident manifestation of such objective. It somehow infuses the Philippine government's efforts in delivering a concise example of how much the country has significantly evolved in the past decade.
Aside from the CICC, even the top hotels of the island have pitched in their own contribution in preparation for the summit by renovating their interiors, adding more amenities, even to the extent of adding more rooms to accommodate the numerous people who would be here for the occasion, at the same time adding to the growing number of skyscrapers in the city. To name a few: Marco Polo, Club Ultima, Parklane International Hotel are among a few of those erected this year.
Cebu has certainly progressed a great deal in the past year. A lot of buildings and establishments were put up, take call centers, for example. Checking out the new Asiatown, IT Park these days may be a surprise, especially for out of towners. This area of the metropolis has become a "call center" hive occupying majority of the complex, along with the latest coffee shops and restaurants, also turning out to be the latest hang out for most people come night fall, laid back as most Cebuanos are. Of course, there are the clubs and lounges, such as the recently renovated Treff Bar, the overwhelmingly designed "Z" Bar, and Loft, among others, where the young gravitate at night.
Year after year, designers, Cebuano architects in particular, are slowly more influenced by cultures from all over the world, Western in particular, incorporating a lot of modernism and other influences to their own designs. This is noticeably along with the developing trends in both art and architecture today. But whatever the trend may be, the boundary for architectural styles and techniques is endless, be it leaning towards the classical styles of the Renaissance or the not so conventional approach of avant-garde modernism, yet maintaining that common goal of achieving an aesthetically pleasing, functional structure at a given cost.

Lapu-Lapu proclaimed highly urbanized city
CEBU CITY -- President Arroyo proclaimed Lapu-Lapu City as a highly urbanized city last Tuesday.
Lapu-Lapu City Mayor Arturo Radaza said a plebiscite will immediately follow.
But opposition Councilor Eugene Espedido said this requires a thorough study.
"That could determine the success or the failure of Lapu-Lapu City," Espedido, who is running for vice mayor this May, told Sun.Star Cebu.
Once a component city is converted into a highly urbanized city, according to
Presidential Proclamation 1222, salaries of its employees and officials will increase, and taxes as well, Radaza said.
"Our resolutions need not pass through the Province (Cebu Provincial Board) for approval," the mayor also said.
Its police station will no longer be under the Cebu Provincial Police Office (CPPO).
"Our status will be upgraded from a police station to Lapu-Lapu City Police Office," said City Police Chief Louie Oppus, whose designation by that time will be "city director" with the rank of senior superintendent.
More benefits, he said, will include additional forces and additional fund allocation for his maintenance and other operating expenses.
He said the Lapu-Lapu City Police Office will be in "equal footing" with the Mandaue City Police Office, Cebu City Police Office and the CPPO.
In her signed proclamation, President Arroyo said the new status will take effect after ratification in a plebiscite, which will held 120 days from the date of the presidential declaration.
"Paninguhaon gyud nga ma-include na sa election (We will work hard to have this included in the elections)," the mayor assured.
The city met the minimum annual income and population requirements of P50 million and 200,000, respectively.
The City Government asked the President through a resolution last April to declare Lapu-Lapu a highly-urbanized city.
The city's income reached P603.47 million in 2005 and its population was recorded at 217,019 as of 2000.
But Espedido wanted to weigh the benefits and the disadvantages of becoming a highly urbanized city.
Though he is not against it, Espedido doubted if the City Government can still afford to maintain its district hospital without the Provincial Capitol's help.
Capitol and sixth district board members contributed to the city's progress and funded some of its projects.
Espedido wants to know why the City wanted to take these benefits away.
Espedido, though, still has to read the proclamation. (Oscar Pineda/Sun.Star Cebu)

Robinsons to construct new building at Fuente
THE year appears to be promising for Cebu City’s economy as another local mall operator bared plans to build another outlet in the midtown area.
Robinsons Land Corp. Inc. is planning to construct a three-story building that will house information technology (IT) facilities, retail outlets and a condominium hotel on the company’s 4,000-square meter property in Fuente Osmeña.
The lot is being used by Robinsons as parking facility.
Hermosilla Irizari, Robinsons Place Cebu complex administration manager, said the future building, which is yet unnamed, will be a mixed-use facility.
She said, though, that the company has yet to set a date for the building’s construction to start.
“They are currently undergoing soil testing,” Irizari tod Sun.Star Cebu yesterday.
She said that while the company is yet to determine the target market for the new project, the future facility will not compete with Robinsons Place.
Irizari also said Robinsons Place, also located at Fuente Osmeña, will soon be undergoing aesthetic enhancement involving its lighting, exterior and internal paint and restrooms.
She also said that next month, the 300-square meter Bazaar inside Robinsons Place will be converted into another retail facility to be named, Fashion Gallery, which will cater to the younger market.
“It will be trendier but (products will) still be at affordable prices,” she said.
Apart from the usual fashion apparel and accessories, the gallery will include a coffee shop and a snack bar.
Irizari said while the store will retain some of its tenants, it will also introduce new operators who have existing stalls in other malls.
The renovated facility, which will cost P2 million, is projected to open in March.
Meanwhile, Irizari said the foodcourt inside Robinsons Place and the mall’s department store showed “significant growth” last year.
“There was more traffic compared to previous years. We are aiming for growth in sales and traffic to increase (further) this year,” she said.
There are 95 tenants at the Robinsons mall in Cebu City.
Gokongwei-owned Robinsons has 18 malls nationwide, including those in the cities of Cebu, Cagayan de Oro, Bacolod and Iloilo. (MMM)

MarkiiBoi January 26th, 2007, 12:26 AM AMA Group readies feasibility study for railway system in Cebu
ABS-CBNnews.COM (http://www.abs-cbnnews.com/storypage.aspx?StoryId=64653)
The AMA Group Holdings Corp. will complete by midyear the feasibility study of a rail system in the province of Cebu, an official of the Department of Transportation and Communication said.
Guiling Mamondiong, DOTC undersecretary for rail, said the feasibility study is expected to be finished by June. "The government is keen on fast-tracking infrastructure projects so the earlier that the study can be finished, the better," he said.
AMA has also expressed intention to bid for the construction of the Manila Light Rail Transit (LRT) Line 1 south extension project amounting to $683 million. It will run southward to the cities of Parañaque and Las Piñas and the neighboring municipalities of Bacoor, Imus and Dasmariñas, in the Cavite province.
Mamondiong added that the Metro Cebu railway project could take just three years to be finished after the project and feasibility study are approved.
The project will run the 71-kilometer stretch through Metro Cebu from the municipality of Carcar in the south to Danao City in the north.
Metro Cebu covers the cities of Cebu, Mandaue, Lapu-Lapu and Talisay and the municipalities of Minglanilla, Consolacion, Liloan, Compostela and Cordova.
The project, estimated to cost $636 million, will be constructed in three phases: Phase 1 would start from Talisay to Mandaue with Cebu City as center of the main line, Phase 2 would extend the main line farther south from Talisay down to Carcar and Phase 3 would stretch the main line farther north from Mandaue up to Danao.
Traffic congestion in Metro Cebu is heaviest for motor vehicles plying the Talisay-Cebu-Mandaue routes and vice versa.
Earlier, House Bills 56 and 3006 were filed in Congress seeking for the construction and operation of a light rail transport system in Cebu City and Metro Cebu.
The rail system is seen to solve the worsening traffic situation in Cebu and improve the mobility of the greater majority of the people.
